वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततस्तानि महार्हाणि दिव्यानि भरतर्षभ ।
बहूनि बहुरूपाणि विरजांसि समाददे ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tatastāni mahārhāṇi divyāni bharatarṣabha ,
bahūni bahurūpāṇi virajāṁsi samādade.

1. O best of Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), Vaiśampāyana said: Then he took up those many divine, very valuable, multi-formed, and stainless (objects/weapons).
ततो वायुर्महाञ्शीघ्रो नीचैः शर्करकर्षणः ।
प्रादुरासीत्खरस्पर्शः संग्राममभिचोदयन् ॥२॥
2. tato vāyurmahāñśīghro nīcaiḥ śarkarakarṣaṇaḥ ,
prādurāsītkharasparśaḥ saṁgrāmamabhicodayan.
2. tataḥ vāyuḥ mahān śīghraḥ nīcaiḥ śarkarakarṣaṇaḥ
prādurāsīt kharasparśaḥ saṃgrāmam abhicodayan
2. Then a great, swift wind appeared, blowing low, dragging pebbles, and harsh to the touch, inciting the battle (saṃgrāmam).
पपात महती चोल्का सनिर्घाता महाप्रभा ।
निष्प्रभश्चाभवत्सूर्यश्छन्नरश्मिस्तमोवृतः ॥३॥
3. papāta mahatī colkā sanirghātā mahāprabhā ,
niṣprabhaścābhavatsūryaśchannaraśmistamovṛtaḥ.
3. papāta mahatī ca ulkā sanirghātā mahāprabhā
niṣprabhaḥ ca abhavat sūryaḥ channaraśmiḥ tamovṛtaḥ
3. And a great, very bright meteor (ulkā) fell with a thunderclap (sanirghātā). The sun (sūrya) also became devoid of luster, its rays hidden and enveloped in darkness.
निर्घातश्चाभवद्भीमो भीमे विक्रममास्थिते ।
चचाल पृथिवी चापि पांसुवर्षं पपात च ॥४॥
4. nirghātaścābhavadbhīmo bhīme vikramamāsthite ,
cacāla pṛthivī cāpi pāṁsuvarṣaṁ papāta ca.
4. nirghātaḥ ca abhavat bhīmaḥ bhīme vikramam āsthite
cacāla pṛthivī ca api pāṃsuvarṣam papāta ca
4. And a terrible thunderclap occurred when Bhīma displayed his prowess. The earth (pṛthivī) also trembled, and a shower of dust fell.
सलोहिता दिशश्चासन्खरवाचो मृगद्विजाः ।
तमोवृतमभूत्सर्वं न प्रज्ञायत किंचन ॥५॥
5. salohitā diśaścāsankharavāco mṛgadvijāḥ ,
tamovṛtamabhūtsarvaṁ na prajñāyata kiṁcana.
5. salohitā diśaḥ ca āsan kharavācaḥ mṛgadvijāḥ
tamovṛtam abhūt sarvam na prajñāyata kiñcana
5. The directions became blood-red, and the animals and birds made harsh noises. Everything was enveloped in darkness, and nothing at all could be perceived.
तदद्भुतमभिप्रेक्ष्य धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
उवाच वदतां श्रेष्ठः कोऽस्मानभिभविष्यति ॥६॥
6. tadadbhutamabhiprekṣya dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
uvāca vadatāṁ śreṣṭhaḥ ko'smānabhibhaviṣyati.
6. tat adbhutam abhiprekṣya dharmaputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
uvāca vadatām śreṣṭhaḥ kaḥ asmān abhibhaviṣyati
6. Having observed that astonishing omen, Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of natural law (dharma) and foremost among speakers, said: 'Who will overcome us?'
सज्जीभवत भद्रं वः पाण्डवा युद्धदुर्मदाः ।
यथारूपाणि पश्यामि स्वभ्यग्रो नः पराक्रमः ॥७॥
7. sajjībhavata bhadraṁ vaḥ pāṇḍavā yuddhadurmadāḥ ,
yathārūpāṇi paśyāmi svabhyagro naḥ parākramaḥ.
7. sajjībhavata bhadram vaḥ pāṇḍavāḥ yuddhadurmadāḥ
yathā rūpāṇi paśyāmi su-abhyagraḥ naḥ parākramaḥ
7. Prepare yourselves! May good fortune (bhadram) be upon you, O Pāṇḍavas, who are formidable in battle! From the signs I perceive, our valor (parākrama) is very near.
एवमुक्त्वा ततो राजा वीक्षां चक्रे समन्ततः ।
अपश्यमानो भीमं च धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥८॥
8. evamuktvā tato rājā vīkṣāṁ cakre samantataḥ ,
apaśyamāno bhīmaṁ ca dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
8. evam uktvā tataḥ rājā vīkṣām cakre samantataḥ
apaśyamānaḥ bhīmam ca dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
8. Having spoken thus, the king then looked all around. Yudhiṣṭhira, the king who upholds natural law (dharma), did not see Bhīma.
तत्र कृष्णां यमौ चैव समीपस्थानरिंदमः ।
पप्रच्छ भ्रातरं भीमं भीमकर्माणमाहवे ॥९॥
9. tatra kṛṣṇāṁ yamau caiva samīpasthānariṁdamaḥ ,
papraccha bhrātaraṁ bhīmaṁ bhīmakarmāṇamāhave.
9. tatra kṛṣṇām yamau ca eva samīpasthān ariṃdamaḥ
papraccha bhrātaraṃ bhīmaṃ bhīmakarmāṇam āhave
9. There, the subduer of enemies (Arjuna) asked Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), the two twins (Nakula and Sahadeva), and his brother Bhīma, who performed formidable deeds in battle, all of whom were nearby.
कच्चिन्न भीमः पाञ्चालि किंचित्कृत्यं चिकीर्षति ।
कृतवानपि वा वीरः साहसं साहसप्रियः ॥१०॥
10. kaccinna bhīmaḥ pāñcāli kiṁcitkṛtyaṁ cikīrṣati ,
kṛtavānapi vā vīraḥ sāhasaṁ sāhasapriyaḥ.
10. kaccit na bhīmaḥ pāñcāli kiṃcit kṛtyaṃ cikīrṣati
kṛtavān api vā vīraḥ sāhasaṃ sāhasapriyaḥ
10. O Pañcālī (Draupadī), I hope that Bhīma does not intend to do some deed! Or has the hero, who is fond of daring acts, already performed some rash act?
इमे ह्यकस्मादुत्पाता महासमरदर्शिनः ।
दर्शयन्तो भयं तीव्रं प्रादुर्भूताः समन्ततः ॥११॥
11. ime hyakasmādutpātā mahāsamaradarśinaḥ ,
darśayanto bhayaṁ tīvraṁ prādurbhūtāḥ samantataḥ.
11. ime hi akasmāt utpātāḥ mahāsamaradarśinaḥ
darśayantaḥ bhayaṃ tīvraṃ prādurbhūtāḥ samantataḥ
11. Indeed, these portents, which indicate a great battle, have suddenly manifested all around, displaying intense fear.
तं तथा वादिनं कृष्णा प्रत्युवाच मनस्विनी ।
प्रिया प्रियं चिकीर्षन्ती महिषी चारुहासिनी ॥१२॥
12. taṁ tathā vādinaṁ kṛṣṇā pratyuvāca manasvinī ,
priyā priyaṁ cikīrṣantī mahiṣī cāruhāsinī.
12. taṃ tathā vādinaṃ kṛṣṇā pratyuvāca manasvinī
priyā priyaṃ cikīrṣantī mahiṣī cāruhāsinī
12. Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), the high-minded, beloved queen with a lovely smile, desiring to do what was pleasing, replied to him who was speaking thus.
यत्तत्सौगन्धिकं राजन्नाहृतं मातरिश्वना ।
तन्मया भीमसेनस्य प्रीतयाद्योपपादितम् ॥१३॥
13. yattatsaugandhikaṁ rājannāhṛtaṁ mātariśvanā ,
tanmayā bhīmasenasya prītayādyopapāditam.
13. yat tat saugandhikam rājan āhṛtam mātariśvanā
tat mayā bhīmasenasya प्रीतया adya upapāditam
13. O King, that fragrant flower which was brought by Mātariśvan (Vāyu) was affectionately presented by me today to Bhīmasena.
अपि चोक्तो मया वीरो यदि पश्येद्बहून्यपि ।
तानि सर्वाण्युपादाय शीघ्रमागम्यतामिति ॥१४॥
14. api cokto mayā vīro yadi paśyedbahūnyapi ,
tāni sarvāṇyupādāya śīghramāgamyatāmiti.
14. api ca uktaḥ mayā vīraḥ yadi paśyet bahūni
api tāni sarvāṇi upādāya śīghram āgamyatām iti
14. And I told that hero (Bhīma), 'If you see many of them, take all of them and return quickly!'
स तु नूनं महाबाहुः प्रियार्थं मम पाण्डवः ।
प्रागुदीचीं दिशं राजंस्तान्याहर्तुमितो गतः ॥१५॥
15. sa tu nūnaṁ mahābāhuḥ priyārthaṁ mama pāṇḍavaḥ ,
prāgudīcīṁ diśaṁ rājaṁstānyāhartumito gataḥ.
15. sa tu nūnam mahābāhuḥ priyārtham mama pāṇḍavaḥ
prāk udīcīm diśam rājan tāni āhartum itaḥ gataḥ
15. Indeed, O King, that mighty-armed son of Pāṇḍu (Bhīma) has gone from here towards the north-eastern direction to fetch those (flowers) for my sake.
उक्तस्त्वेवं तया राजा यमाविदमथाब्रवीत् ।
गच्छाम सहितास्तूर्णं येन यातो वृकोदरः ॥१६॥
16. uktastvevaṁ tayā rājā yamāvidamathābravīt ,
gacchāma sahitāstūrṇaṁ yena yāto vṛkodaraḥ.
16. uktaḥ tu evam tayā rājā yam āvidam atha abravīt
gacchāma sahitāḥ tūrṇam yena yātaḥ vṛkodaraḥ
16. But thus spoken to by her, the King (Yudhiṣṭhira) then said to Yama, the knower, 'Let us go together quickly, to where Vṛkodara (Bhīma) has gone.'
वहन्तु राक्षसा विप्रान्यथाश्रान्तान्यथाकृशान् ।
त्वमप्यमरसंकाश वह कृष्णां घटोत्कच ॥१७॥
17. vahantu rākṣasā viprānyathāśrāntānyathākṛśān ,
tvamapyamarasaṁkāśa vaha kṛṣṇāṁ ghaṭotkaca.
17. vahantu rākṣasāḥ viprān yathā aśrāntān yathā kṛśān
tvam api amara-saṃkāśa vaha kṛṣṇām ghaṭotkaca
17. Let the rākṣasas carry the brahmins in such a way that they remain neither fatigued nor emaciated. And you, O Ghaṭotkaca, who are like a god, also carry Kṛṣṇā.
व्यक्तं दूरमितो भीमः प्रविष्ट इति मे मतिः ।
चिरं च तस्य कालोऽयं स च वायुसमो जवे ॥१८॥
18. vyaktaṁ dūramito bhīmaḥ praviṣṭa iti me matiḥ ,
ciraṁ ca tasya kālo'yaṁ sa ca vāyusamo jave.
18. vyaktam dūram itaḥ bhīmaḥ praviṣṭaḥ iti me matiḥ
ciram ca tasya kālaḥ ayam saḥ ca vāyu-samaḥ jave
18. It is clear to me that Bhīma has gone far from here. This period (of absence) is long for him, yet he is as swift as the wind.
तरस्वी वैनतेयस्य सदृशो भुवि लङ्घने ।
उत्पतेदपि चाकाशं निपतेच्च यथेच्छकम् ॥१९॥
19. tarasvī vainateyasya sadṛśo bhuvi laṅghane ,
utpatedapi cākāśaṁ nipatecca yathecchakam.
19. tarasvī vainateyasya sadṛśaḥ bhuvi laṅghane
utpatet api ca ākāśam nipatet ca yathā icchakam
19. He is swift, comparable to Garuḍa (vainateya) in leaping upon the earth. He could even soar into the sky and descend as he wishes.
तमन्वियाम भवतां प्रभावाद्रजनीचराः ।
पुरा स नापराध्नोति सिद्धानां ब्रह्मवादिनाम् ॥२०॥
20. tamanviyāma bhavatāṁ prabhāvādrajanīcarāḥ ,
purā sa nāparādhnoti siddhānāṁ brahmavādinām.
20. tam anviyāma bhavatām prabhāvāt rajanīcarāḥ purā
saḥ na aparādhnoti siddhānām brahma-vādinām
20. Let us follow him, O night-wanderers (rajanīcara), by your power, lest he offends the perfected beings (siddha) and the speakers of brahman (brahmavādin).
तथेत्युक्त्वा तु ते सर्वे हैडिम्बप्रमुखास्तदा ।
उद्देशज्ञाः कुबेरस्य नलिन्या भरतर्षभ ॥२१॥
21. tathetyuktvā tu te sarve haiḍimbapramukhāstadā ,
uddeśajñāḥ kuberasya nalinyā bharatarṣabha.
21. tathā iti uktvā tu te sarve haiḍimbapramukhāḥ
tadā uddeśajñāḥ kuberasya nalinyāḥ bharatarṣabha
21. O best among the Bharatas, then, all of them, led by Hiḍimba, having said 'So be it', and knowing the location of Kubera's Nalinī (lake), [departed].
आदाय पाण्डवांश्चैव तांश्च विप्राननेकशः ।
लोमशेनैव सहिताः प्रययुः प्रीतमानसाः ॥२२॥
22. ādāya pāṇḍavāṁścaiva tāṁśca viprānanekaśaḥ ,
lomaśenaiva sahitāḥ prayayuḥ prītamānasāḥ.
22. ādāya pāṇḍavān ca eva tān ca viprān anekaśaḥ
lomaśena eva sahitāḥ prayayuḥ prītamānasāḥ
22. Taking the Pāṇḍavas and those many Brahmins, they, accompanied by Lomaśa himself, departed with joyful minds.
ते गत्वा सहिताः सर्वे ददृशुस्तत्र कानने ।
प्रफुल्लपङ्कजवतीं नलिनीं सुमनोहराम् ॥२३॥
23. te gatvā sahitāḥ sarve dadṛśustatra kānane ,
praphullapaṅkajavatīṁ nalinīṁ sumanoharām.
23. te gatvā sahitāḥ sarve dadṛśuḥ tatra kānane
praphullapaṅkajavatīm nalinīm sumanoharām
23. All of them, having gone there together, saw in that grove the delightful Nalinī (lake), which was full of blooming lotuses.
तं च भीमं महात्मानं तस्यास्तीरे व्यवस्थितम् ।
ददृशुर्निहतांश्चैव यक्षान्सुविपुलेक्षणान् ॥२४॥
24. taṁ ca bhīmaṁ mahātmānaṁ tasyāstīre vyavasthitam ,
dadṛśurnihatāṁścaiva yakṣānsuvipulekṣaṇān.
24. tam ca bhīmam mahātmānam tasyāḥ tīre vyavasthitam
dadṛśuḥ nihatān ca eva yakṣān suvipulekṣaṇān
24. They also saw the great-souled (ātman) Bhīma positioned on the bank of that (lake), and they saw the slain Yakṣas, who had very wide eyes.
उद्यम्य च गदां दोर्भ्यां नदीतीरे व्यवस्थितम् ।
प्रजासंक्षेपसमये दण्डहस्तमिवान्तकम् ॥२५॥
25. udyamya ca gadāṁ dorbhyāṁ nadītīre vyavasthitam ,
prajāsaṁkṣepasamaye daṇḍahastamivāntakam.
25. udyamya ca gadām dorbhyām nadītīre vyavasthitam
prajāsaṃkṣepasamaye daṇḍahastam iva antakam
25. Having raised a mace with both arms, he stood on the river bank, like Yama, the god of death (antaka), holding a staff (daṇḍa) at the time of the dissolution of creation (prajāsaṃkṣepasamaya).
तं दृष्ट्वा धर्मराजस्तु परिष्वज्य पुनः पुनः ।
उवाच श्लक्ष्णया वाचा कौन्तेय किमिदं कृतम् ॥२६॥
26. taṁ dṛṣṭvā dharmarājastu pariṣvajya punaḥ punaḥ ,
uvāca ślakṣṇayā vācā kaunteya kimidaṁ kṛtam.
26. tam dṛṣṭvā dharmarājaḥ tu pariṣvajya punaḥ punaḥ
uvāca ślakṣṇayā vācā kaunteya kim idam kṛtam
26. Having seen him, King Yudhiṣṭhira (dharma-rāja) embraced him again and again, and then spoke with a gentle voice: "O son of Kuntī, what is this that you have done?"
साहसं बत भद्रं ते देवानामपि चाप्रियम् ।
पुनरेवं न कर्तव्यं मम चेदिच्छसि प्रियम् ॥२७॥
27. sāhasaṁ bata bhadraṁ te devānāmapi cāpriyam ,
punarevaṁ na kartavyaṁ mama cedicchasi priyam.
27. sāhasam bata bhadram te devānām api ca apriyam
punaḥ evam na kartavyam mama cet icchasi priyam
27. Alas, what a daring act (sāhasa)! Though it may bring you good fortune, it is also displeasing even to the gods. If you desire what is dear to me, you must not do such a thing again.
अनुशास्य च कौन्तेयं पद्मानि प्रतिगृह्य च ।
तस्यामेव नलिन्यां ते विजह्रुरमरोपमाः ॥२८॥
28. anuśāsya ca kaunteyaṁ padmāni pratigṛhya ca ,
tasyāmeva nalinyāṁ te vijahruramaropamāḥ.
28. anuśāsya ca kaunteyam padmāni pratigṛhya ca
tasyām eva nalinyām te vijahruḥ amaropamāḥ
28. And having instructed the son of Kuntī, and having received the lotuses, they, who were god-like, sported in that very lotus pond.
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु प्रगृहीतशिलायुधाः ।
प्रादुरासन्महाकायास्तस्योद्यानस्य रक्षिणः ॥२९॥
29. etasminneva kāle tu pragṛhītaśilāyudhāḥ ,
prādurāsanmahākāyāstasyodyānasya rakṣiṇaḥ.
29. etasmin eva kāle tu pragṛhītaśilāyudhāḥ
prādurāsan mahākāyāḥ tasya udyānasya rakṣiṇaḥ
29. At that very time, however, the gigantic-bodied protectors of that garden, holding stone weapons, appeared.
ते दृष्ट्वा धर्मराजानं देवर्षिं चापि लोमशम् ।
नकुलं सहदेवं च तथान्यान्ब्राह्मणर्षभान् ।
विनयेनानताः सर्वे प्रणिपेतुश्च भारत ॥३०॥
30. te dṛṣṭvā dharmarājānaṁ devarṣiṁ cāpi lomaśam ,
nakulaṁ sahadevaṁ ca tathānyānbrāhmaṇarṣabhān ,
vinayenānatāḥ sarve praṇipetuśca bhārata.
30. te dṛṣṭvā dharmarājānam devarṣim ca
api lomaśam nakulam sahadevam ca
tathā anyān brāhmaṇarṣabhān vinayena
ānatāḥ sarve praṇipetuḥ ca bhārata
30. O Bhārata, having seen King Yudhiṣṭhira (dharma), the divine sage Lomaśa, Nakula, Sahadeva, and also other excellent brahmins, they all bowed with humility and prostrated themselves.
सान्त्विता धर्मराजेन प्रसेदुः क्षणदाचराः ।
विदिताश्च कुबेरस्य ततस्ते नरपुंगवाः ।
ऊषुर्नातिचिरं कालं रममाणाः कुरूद्वहाः ॥३१॥
31. sāntvitā dharmarājena praseduḥ kṣaṇadācarāḥ ,
viditāśca kuberasya tataste narapuṁgavāḥ ,
ūṣurnāticiraṁ kālaṁ ramamāṇāḥ kurūdvahāḥ.
31. sāntvitāḥ dharmarājena praseduḥ
kṣaṇadācarāḥ viditāḥ ca kuberasya
tataḥ te narapuṅgavāḥ ūṣuḥ na ati
ciram kālam ramamāṇāḥ kurūdvahāḥ
31. Consoled by King Yudhiṣṭhira (dharma), those night-wanderers (rakṣasas), who were known to Kubera, became pleased. Thereupon, O descendants of Kuru, those excellent men (the Pāṇḍavas) dwelled there, enjoying themselves, though not for too long a time.
