सोमक उवाच ।
ब्रह्मन्यद्यद्यथा कार्यं तत्तत्कुरु तथा तथा ।
पुत्रकामतया सर्वं करिष्यामि वचस्तव ॥१॥
1. somaka uvāca ,
brahmanyadyadyathā kāryaṁ tattatkuru tathā tathā ,
putrakāmatayā sarvaṁ kariṣyāmi vacastava.
1. somakaḥ uvāca | brahman yadyat yathā kāryam tat tat kuru
tathā tathā | putrakāmatayā sarvam kariṣyāmi vacaḥ tava
1. Somaka said: 'O Brahmin (brahman), whatever is to be done and however it is to be done, please do it exactly that way. Out of my strong desire for sons, I will perform everything according to your instructions.'
लोमश उवाच ।
ततः स याजयामास सोमकं तेन जन्तुना ।
मातरस्तु बलात्पुत्रमपाकर्षुः कृपान्विताः ॥२॥
2. lomaśa uvāca ,
tataḥ sa yājayāmāsa somakaṁ tena jantunā ,
mātarastu balātputramapākarṣuḥ kṛpānvitāḥ.
2. lomaśa uvāca tataḥ sa yājayāmāsa somakam tena
jantunā mātaraḥ tu balāt putram apākarṣuḥ kṛpānvitāḥ
2. Lomasha said: Then he caused King Somaka to perform a ritual (yajña) with that creature, but the mothers, filled with compassion, forcibly pulled their son away.
हा हताः स्मेति वाशन्त्यस्तीव्रशोकसमन्विताः ।
तं मातरः प्रत्यकर्षन्गृहीत्वा दक्षिणे करे ।
सव्ये पाणौ गृहीत्वा तु याजकोऽपि स्म कर्षति ॥३॥
3. hā hatāḥ smeti vāśantyastīvraśokasamanvitāḥ ,
taṁ mātaraḥ pratyakarṣangṛhītvā dakṣiṇe kare ,
savye pāṇau gṛhītvā tu yājako'pi sma karṣati.
3. hā hatāḥ sma iti vāśantyaḥ
tīvraśokasamannvitāḥ tam mātaraḥ prati akarṣan
gṛhītvā dakṣiṇe kare savye pāṇau
gṛhītvā tu yājakaḥ api sma karṣati
3. "Alas, we are undone!" wailed the mothers, overcome with intense grief (śoka). They pulled him back, holding his right hand. But the priest (yājaka) also, holding his left hand, was dragging him.
कुररीणामिवार्तानामपाकृष्य तु तं सुतम् ।
विशस्य चैनं विधिना वपामस्य जुहाव सः ॥४॥
4. kurarīṇāmivārtānāmapākṛṣya tu taṁ sutam ,
viśasya cainaṁ vidhinā vapāmasya juhāva saḥ.
4. kurarīṇām iva ārtānām apākṛṣya tu tam sutam
viśasya ca enam vidhinā vapām asya juhāva saḥ
4. But having pulled that son away from them, just like distressed ospreys (kurarī), he (the priest) slaughtered him according to the prescribed rites (vidhi), and then offered his omentum into the sacrificial fire (yajña).
वपायां हूयमानायां गन्धमाघ्राय मातरः ।
आर्ता निपेतुः सहसा पृथिव्यां कुरुनन्दन ।
सर्वाश्च गर्भानलभंस्ततस्ताः पार्थिवाङ्गनाः ॥५॥
5. vapāyāṁ hūyamānāyāṁ gandhamāghrāya mātaraḥ ,
ārtā nipetuḥ sahasā pṛthivyāṁ kurunandana ,
sarvāśca garbhānalabhaṁstatastāḥ pārthivāṅganāḥ.
5. vapāyām hūyamānāyām gandham āghrāya
mātaraḥ ārtāḥ nipetuḥ sahasā
pṛthivyām kurunandana sarvāḥ ca garbhān
alabhanta tataḥ tāḥ pārthivāṅganāḥ
5. O delight of the Kurus (kurunandana), as the omentum was being offered, the mothers, smelling the scent, became distressed and suddenly fell to the earth (pṛthivī). Then, all those royal women (pārthivāṅganāḥ) conceived.
ततो दशसु मासेषु सोमकस्य विशां पते ।
जज्ञे पुत्रशतं पूर्णं तासु सर्वासु भारत ॥६॥
6. tato daśasu māseṣu somakasya viśāṁ pate ,
jajñe putraśataṁ pūrṇaṁ tāsu sarvāsu bhārata.
6. tataḥ daśasu māseṣu somakasya viśām pate
jajñe putraśatam pūrṇam tāsu sarvāsu bhārata
6. Then, O lord of the people, Somaka, in ten months, a complete hundred sons were born to him through all of those wives, O descendant of Bharata.
जन्तुर्ज्येष्ठः समभवज्जनित्र्यामेव भारत ।
स तासामिष्ट एवासीन्न तथान्ये निजाः सुताः ॥७॥
7. janturjyeṣṭhaḥ samabhavajjanitryāmeva bhārata ,
sa tāsāmiṣṭa evāsīnna tathānye nijāḥ sutāḥ.
7. jantuḥ jyeṣṭhaḥ samabhavat janitryām eva bhārata
saḥ tāsām iṣṭaḥ eva āsīt na tathā anye nijāḥ sutāḥ
7. Jantu, the eldest (son), was born from just one mother, O descendant of Bharata. He was indeed beloved by all of them (the wives), but his other sons were not similarly (beloved).
तच्च लक्षणमस्यासीत्सौवर्णं पार्श्व उत्तरे ।
तस्मिन्पुत्रशते चाग्र्यः स बभूव गुणैर्युतः ॥८॥
8. tacca lakṣaṇamasyāsītsauvarṇaṁ pārśva uttare ,
tasminputraśate cāgryaḥ sa babhūva guṇairyutaḥ.
8. tat ca lakṣaṇam asya āsīt sauvarṇam pārśve uttare
tasmin putraśate ca agryaḥ saḥ babhūva guṇaiḥ yutaḥ
8. And he had a golden mark on his left side. Among those hundred sons, he (Jantu) became the most excellent, endowed with virtues.
ततः स लोकमगमत्सोमकस्य गुरुः परम् ।
अथ काले व्यतीते तु सोमकोऽप्यगमत्परम् ॥९॥
9. tataḥ sa lokamagamatsomakasya guruḥ param ,
atha kāle vyatīte tu somako'pyagamatparam.
9. tataḥ saḥ lokam agamat somakasya guruḥ param
atha kāle vyatīte tu somakaḥ api agamat param
9. Then, Somaka's venerable teacher (guru) departed to the highest realm. And in due course, after a period of time, Somaka himself also departed to the highest realm.
अथ तं नरके घोरे पच्यमानं ददर्श सः ।
तमपृच्छत्किमर्थं त्वं नरके पच्यसे द्विज ॥१०॥
10. atha taṁ narake ghore pacyamānaṁ dadarśa saḥ ,
tamapṛcchatkimarthaṁ tvaṁ narake pacyase dvija.
10. atha tam narake ghore pacyamānam dadarśa saḥ
tam apṛcchat kimartham tvam narake pacyase dvija
10. Then he saw him being tormented in a terrible hell. He asked him, "O twice-born (dvija), why are you being tormented in hell?"
तमब्रवीद्गुरुः सोऽथ पच्यमानोऽग्निना भृशम् ।
त्वं मया याजितो राजंस्तस्येदं कर्मणः फलम् ॥११॥
11. tamabravīdguruḥ so'tha pacyamāno'gninā bhṛśam ,
tvaṁ mayā yājito rājaṁstasyedaṁ karmaṇaḥ phalam.
11. tam abravīt guruḥ saḥ atha pacyamānaḥ agninā bhṛśam
tvam mayā yājitaḥ rājan tasya idam karmaṇaḥ phalam
11. atha guruḥ agninā bhṛśam pacyamānaḥ tam abravīt rājan
tvam mayā yājitaḥ (asi) tasya karmaṇaḥ idam phalam (asti)
11. Then, the guru, who was being intensely consumed by fire, said to him: "O King, you were made to perform a Vedic ritual (yajña) by me; this is the fruit of that action (karma)."
एतच्छ्रुत्वा स राजर्षिर्धर्मराजानमब्रवीत् ।
अहमत्र प्रवेक्ष्यामि मुच्यतां मम याजकः ।
मत्कृते हि महाभागः पच्यते नरकाग्निना ॥१२॥
12. etacchrutvā sa rājarṣirdharmarājānamabravīt ,
ahamatra pravekṣyāmi mucyatāṁ mama yājakaḥ ,
matkṛte hi mahābhāgaḥ pacyate narakāgninā.
12. etat śrutvā saḥ rājarṣiḥ dharmarājānam
abravīt aham atra pravekṣyāmi
mucyatām mama yājakaḥ matkṛte
hi mahābhāgaḥ pacyate narakāgninā
12. Having heard this, that royal sage (rājarṣi) spoke to the King of justice (dharmarāja): "I will enter here. Let my priest (yājaka) be released. Indeed, for my sake, this noble one is being tormented by the fire of hell."
धर्म उवाच ।
नान्यः कर्तुः फलं राजन्नुपभुङ्क्ते कदाचन ।
इमानि तव दृश्यन्ते फलानि ददतां वर ॥१३॥
13. dharma uvāca ,
nānyaḥ kartuḥ phalaṁ rājannupabhuṅkte kadācana ,
imāni tava dṛśyante phalāni dadatāṁ vara.
13. dharmaḥ uvāca na anyaḥ kartuḥ phalam rājan upabhuṅkte
kadācana imāni tava dṛśyante phalāni dadatām vara
13. The god of justice (dharma) said: "O king, another person never experiences the fruit (phalam) of a doer's action (karma) at any time. These fruits (phalāni) are seen to be yours, O best among givers!"
सोमक उवाच ।
पुण्यान्न कामये लोकानृतेऽहं ब्रह्मवादिनम् ।
इच्छाम्यहमनेनैव सह वस्तुं सुरालये ॥१४॥
14. somaka uvāca ,
puṇyānna kāmaye lokānṛte'haṁ brahmavādinam ,
icchāmyahamanenaiva saha vastuṁ surālaye.
14. somaka uvāca puṇyān na kāmaye lokān ṛte aham
brahmavādinam icchāmi aham anena eva saha vastum surālaye
14. Somaka said: "I do not desire the meritorious worlds without this speaker of Brahman (brahmavādin). I wish to dwell with him in the abode of the gods."
नरके वा धर्मराज कर्मणास्य समो ह्यहम् ।
पुण्यापुण्यफलं देव सममस्त्वावयोरिदम् ॥१५॥
15. narake vā dharmarāja karmaṇāsya samo hyaham ,
puṇyāpuṇyaphalaṁ deva samamastvāvayoridam.
15. narake vā dharmarāja karmaṇā asya samaḥ hi aham
puṇyāpuṇyaphalam deva samam astu āvayoḥ idam
15. Or, O King of Dharma (dharmarāja), I am indeed equal to him in my deeds (karma). O God, let the fruit of merit and demerit (karma) be equal for us both.
धर्म उवाच ।
यद्येवमीप्सितं राजन्भुङ्क्ष्वास्य सहितः फलम् ।
तुल्यकालं सहानेन पश्चात्प्राप्स्यसि सद्गतिम् ॥१६॥
16. dharma uvāca ,
yadyevamīpsitaṁ rājanbhuṅkṣvāsya sahitaḥ phalam ,
tulyakālaṁ sahānena paścātprāpsyasi sadgatim.
16. dharma uvāca yadi evam īpsitam rājan bhuṅkṣva asya sahitaḥ
phalam tulyakālam saha anena paścāt prāpsyasi sadgatim
16. Dharma (dharma) said: "If this is your wish, O King, then enjoy his fruit while being with him. Simultaneously with him, you will later attain a good destination."
लोमश उवाच ।
स चकार तथा सर्वं राजा राजीवलोचनः ।
पुनश्च लेभे लोकान्स्वान्कर्मणा निर्जिताञ्शुभान् ।
सह तेनैव विप्रेण गुरुणा स गुरुप्रियः ॥१७॥
17. lomaśa uvāca ,
sa cakāra tathā sarvaṁ rājā rājīvalocanaḥ ,
punaśca lebhe lokānsvānkarmaṇā nirjitāñśubhān ,
saha tenaiva vipreṇa guruṇā sa gurupriyaḥ.
17. lomaśa uvāca sa cakāra tathā sarvam
rājā rājīvalocanaḥ punaḥ ca lebhe
lokān svān karmaṇā nirjitān śubhān saha
tena eva vipreṇa guruṇā sa gurupriyaḥ
17. Lomasha said: "That king with lotus-like eyes did everything accordingly. And he again obtained his own auspicious worlds, which were conquered by his deeds (karma). He, dear to his preceptor (guru), did so together with that very Brāhmaṇa, who was his preceptor (guru)."
एष तस्याश्रमः पुण्यो य एषोऽग्रे विराजते ।
क्षान्त उष्यात्र षड्रात्रं प्राप्नोति सुगतिं नरः ॥१८॥
18. eṣa tasyāśramaḥ puṇyo ya eṣo'gre virājate ,
kṣānta uṣyātra ṣaḍrātraṁ prāpnoti sugatiṁ naraḥ.
18. eṣaḥ tasya āśramaḥ puṇyaḥ yaḥ eṣaḥ agre virājate
kṣāntaḥ uṣya atra ṣaḍrātram prāpnoti sugatim naraḥ
18. This is that sacred hermitage (āśrama) which shines forth ahead. A person who stays here for six nights, enduring the time, attains a good destination.
एतस्मिन्नपि राजेन्द्र वत्स्यामो विगतज्वराः ।
षड्रात्रं नियतात्मानः सज्जीभव कुरूद्वह ॥१९॥
19. etasminnapi rājendra vatsyāmo vigatajvarāḥ ,
ṣaḍrātraṁ niyatātmānaḥ sajjībhava kurūdvaha.
19. etasmin api rājendra vatsyāmaḥ vigatajvarāḥ
ṣaḍrātram niyatātmānaḥ sajjībhava kurūdvaha
19. O king of kings (rājendra), we will also stay here for six nights, free from anxiety (vigatajvarāḥ) and with controlled selves (niyatātmānaḥ). O best of Kurus (kurūdvaha), be ready!
