वैशंपायन उवाच ।
प्रवेशने तु पार्थानां जनस्य पुरवासिनः ।
दिदृक्षूणां सहस्राणि समाजग्मुर्बहून्यथ ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
praveśane tu pārthānāṁ janasya puravāsinaḥ ,
didṛkṣūṇāṁ sahasrāṇi samājagmurbahūnyatha.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, indeed, at the Pārthas' entry, many thousands of city residents, eager to see them, assembled.
स राजमार्गः शुशुभे समलंकृतचत्वरः ।
यथा चन्द्रोदये राजन्वर्धमानो महोदधिः ॥२॥
2. sa rājamārgaḥ śuśubhe samalaṁkṛtacatvaraḥ ,
yathā candrodaye rājanvardhamāno mahodadhiḥ.
2. saḥ rājamārgaḥ śuśubhe samalaṅkṛtacatvaraḥ |
yathā candrodaye rājan vardhamānaḥ mahodadhiḥ
2. O king, that royal road, with its squares well-decorated, shone beautifully, just as the great ocean swells at moonrise.
गृहाणि राजमार्गे तु रत्नवन्ति बृहन्ति च ।
प्राकम्पन्तेव भारेण स्त्रीणां पूर्णानि भारत ॥३॥
3. gṛhāṇi rājamārge tu ratnavanti bṛhanti ca ,
prākampanteva bhāreṇa strīṇāṁ pūrṇāni bhārata.

3. Indeed, on the royal road, O Bhārata, the large, gem-laden houses, filled with women, seemed to tremble as if from their (the women's) weight.
ताः शनैरिव सव्रीडं प्रशशंसुर्युधिष्ठिरम् ।
भीमसेनार्जुनौ चैव माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ ॥४॥
4. tāḥ śanairiva savrīḍaṁ praśaśaṁsuryudhiṣṭhiram ,
bhīmasenārjunau caiva mādrīputrau ca pāṇḍavau.

4. Those women slowly, as if with modesty, praised Yudhiṣṭhira, and also Bhīmasena and Arjuna, as well as the two sons of Mādrī, the Pāṇḍavas.
धन्या त्वमसि पाञ्चालि या त्वं पुरुषसत्तमान् ।
उपतिष्ठसि कल्याणि महर्षीनिव गौतमी ॥५॥
5. dhanyā tvamasi pāñcāli yā tvaṁ puruṣasattamān ,
upatiṣṭhasi kalyāṇi maharṣīniva gautamī.
5. dhanyā tvam asi pāñcāli yā tvaṃ puruṣasattamān
upatiṣṭhasi kalyāṇi maharṣīn iva gautamī
5. pāñcāli kalyāṇi tvam dhanyā asi,
yā tvam gautamī maharṣīn iva puruṣasattamān upatiṣṭhasi
5. O Pāñcālī, you are fortunate, O auspicious one, as you attend (serve) the best among men, just like Gautami served the great sages.
तव कर्माण्यमोघानि व्रतचर्या च भामिनि ।
इति कृष्णां महाराज प्रशशंसुस्तदा स्त्रियः ॥६॥
6. tava karmāṇyamoghāni vratacaryā ca bhāmini ,
iti kṛṣṇāṁ mahārāja praśaśaṁsustadā striyaḥ.
6. tava karmāṇi amoghāni vratacaryā ca bhāmini
iti kṛṣṇāṃ mahārāja praśaśaṃsuḥ tadā striyaḥ
6. bhāmini tava karmāṇi amoghāni ca vratacaryā [asti]

6. 'Your actions (karma) are unfailing, O splendid woman, and so is your observance of vows,' thus, O great king, the women then praised Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī).
प्रशंसावचनैस्तासां मिथःशब्दैश्च भारत ।
प्रीतिजैश्च तदा शब्दैः पुरमासीत्समाकुलम् ॥७॥
7. praśaṁsāvacanaistāsāṁ mithaḥśabdaiśca bhārata ,
prītijaiśca tadā śabdaiḥ puramāsītsamākulam.

prītijaiḥ ca tadā śabdaiḥ puram āsīt samākulam

7. O Bhārata, at that time, the city was filled with words of praise from its inhabitants, with mutual conversations, and with sounds arising from joy.
तमतीत्य यथायुक्तं राजमार्गं युधिष्ठिरः ।
अलंकृतं शोभमानमुपायाद्राजवेश्म ह ॥८॥
8. tamatītya yathāyuktaṁ rājamārgaṁ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
alaṁkṛtaṁ śobhamānamupāyādrājaveśma ha.
8. tam atītya yathāyuktam rājamārgam yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
alaṃkṛtam śobhamānam upāyāt rājaveśma ha
8. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ yathāyuktam tam rājamārgam atītya
alaṃkṛtam śobhamānam rājaveśma upāyāt ha
8. Having properly traversed that royal highway, Yudhiṣṭhira approached the royal palace, which was splendidly adorned and shining.
ततः प्रकृतयः सर्वाः पौरजानपदास्तथा ।
ऊचुः कथाः कर्णसुखाः समुपेत्य ततस्ततः ॥९॥
9. tataḥ prakṛtayaḥ sarvāḥ paurajānapadāstathā ,
ūcuḥ kathāḥ karṇasukhāḥ samupetya tatastataḥ.
9. tataḥ prakṛtayaḥ sarvāḥ paurajānapadāḥ tathā
ūcuḥ kathāḥ karṇasukhāḥ samupetya tataḥ tataḥ

9. Then all the subjects, including the citizens and the country-folk, having gathered from here and there, spoke words that were pleasing to the ear.
दिष्ट्या जयसि राजेन्द्र शत्रूञ्शत्रुनिसूदन ।
दिष्ट्या राज्यं पुनः प्राप्तं धर्मेण च बलेन च ॥१०॥
10. diṣṭyā jayasi rājendra śatrūñśatrunisūdana ,
diṣṭyā rājyaṁ punaḥ prāptaṁ dharmeṇa ca balena ca.
10. diṣṭyā jayasi rājendra śatrūn śatrunisūdana
diṣṭyā rājyam punaḥ prāptam dharmeṇa ca balena ca
10. rājendra śatrunisūdana diṣṭyā śatrūn jayasi
diṣṭyā rājyam punaḥ dharmeṇa ca balena ca prāptam
10. Fortunately, O king of kings, O slayer of enemies, you are victorious over your foes! And fortunately, the kingdom has been regained through both righteousness (dharma) and strength.
भव नस्त्वं महाराज राजेह शरदां शतम् ।
प्रजाः पालय धर्मेण यथेन्द्रस्त्रिदिवं नृप ॥११॥
11. bhava nastvaṁ mahārāja rājeha śaradāṁ śatam ,
prajāḥ pālaya dharmeṇa yathendrastridivaṁ nṛpa.
11. bhava naḥ tvam mahārāja rāja iha śaradām śatam
prajāḥ pālaya dharmeṇa yathā indraḥ tridivam nṛpa
11. tvam mahārāja rāja nṛpa iha naḥ śatam śaradām
bhava prajāḥ dharmeṇa pālaya yathā indraḥ tridivam
11. O Great King, may you be our ruler here for a hundred years. Protect the subjects according to natural law (dharma), just as Indra rules heaven, O King.
एवं राजकुलद्वारि मङ्गलैरभिपूजितः ।
आशीर्वादान्द्विजैरुक्तान्प्रतिगृह्य समन्ततः ॥१२॥
12. evaṁ rājakuladvāri maṅgalairabhipūjitaḥ ,
āśīrvādāndvijairuktānpratigṛhya samantataḥ.
12. evam rājakuladvāri maṅgalaiḥ abhipūjitaḥ
āśīrvādān dvijaiḥ uktān pratigṛhya samantataḥ

12. Thus, having been honored with auspicious rites at the royal palace gate, and having received the blessings spoken by the Brahmins (dvija) from all sides...
प्रविश्य भवनं राजा देवराजगृहोपमम् ।
श्रुत्वा विजयसंयुक्तं रथात्पश्चादवातरत् ॥१३॥
13. praviśya bhavanaṁ rājā devarājagṛhopamam ,
śrutvā vijayasaṁyuktaṁ rathātpaścādavātarat.
13. praviśya bhavanam rājā devarājagṛha upamam
śrutvā vijayasaṃyuktam rathāt paścāt avātarat
13. rājā devarājagṛhopamam bhavanam praviśya
vijayasaṃyuktam śrutvā paścāt rathāt avātarat
13. Upon reaching his palace, which resembled the abode of the king of gods, and having heard the victorious news, the king then dismounted from his chariot.
प्रविश्याभ्यन्तरं श्रीमान्दैवतान्यभिगम्य च ।
पूजयामास रत्नैश्च गन्धैर्माल्यैश्च सर्वशः ॥१४॥
14. praviśyābhyantaraṁ śrīmāndaivatānyabhigamya ca ,
pūjayāmāsa ratnaiśca gandhairmālyaiśca sarvaśaḥ.
14. praviśya abhyantaram śrīmān daivatāni abhigamya ca
pūjayāmāsa ratnaiḥ ca gandhaiḥ mālyaiḥ ca sarvaśaḥ
14. śrīmān abhyantaram praviśya daivatāni abhigamya ca
ratnaiḥ ca gandhaiḥ ca mālyaiḥ sarvaśaḥ pūjayāmāsa
14. The glorious king, having entered the inner apartments and having approached the deities, worshipped them with jewels, fragrances, and garlands in every way.
निश्चक्राम ततः श्रीमान्पुनरेव महायशाः ।
ददर्श ब्राह्मणांश्चैव सोऽभिरूपानुपस्थितान् ॥१५॥
15. niścakrāma tataḥ śrīmānpunareva mahāyaśāḥ ,
dadarśa brāhmaṇāṁścaiva so'bhirūpānupasthitān.
15. niścakrāma tataḥ śrīmān punar eva mahāyaśāḥ
dadarśa brāhmaṇān ca eva saḥ abhirūpān upasthitān
15. tataḥ śrīmān mahāyaśāḥ saḥ punar eva niścakrāma
ca eva abhirūpān upasthitān brāhmaṇān dadarśa
15. Then, the glorious and highly renowned one again came out. He saw the suitable and present Brahmins.
स संवृतस्तदा विप्रैराशीर्वादविवक्षुभिः ।
शुशुभे विमलश्चन्द्रस्तारागणवृतो यथा ॥१६॥
16. sa saṁvṛtastadā viprairāśīrvādavivakṣubhiḥ ,
śuśubhe vimalaścandrastārāgaṇavṛto yathā.
16. saḥ saṃvṛtaḥ tadā vipraiḥ āśīrvādavivakṣubhiḥ
śuśubhe vimalaḥ candraḥ tārāgaṇavṛtaḥ yathā
16. tadā saḥ āśīrvādavivakṣubhiḥ vipraiḥ saṃvṛtaḥ,
yathā tārāgaṇavṛtaḥ vimalaḥ candraḥ śuśubhe
16. Then, he was surrounded by Brahmins who desired to speak blessings, just as the spotless moon shines, encircled by a host of stars.
तान्स संपूजयामास कौन्तेयो विधिवद्द्विजान् ।
धौम्यं गुरुं पुरस्कृत्य ज्येष्ठं पितरमेव च ॥१७॥
17. tānsa saṁpūjayāmāsa kaunteyo vidhivaddvijān ,
dhaumyaṁ guruṁ puraskṛtya jyeṣṭhaṁ pitarameva ca.
17. tān saḥ sampūjayām āsa kaunteyaḥ vidhivat dvijān
dhaumyam gurum puraskṛtya jyeṣṭham pitaram eva ca
17. kaunteyaḥ saḥ tān dvijān vidhivat sampūjayām āsa,
gurum dhaumyam ca eva jyeṣṭham pitaram puraskṛtya
17. The son of Kunti (Kaunteya) honored those twice-born ones (dvijān) according to the prescribed rites, respectfully placing his preceptor Dhaumya and his eldest paternal figure (pitaram) at the forefront.
सुमनोमोदकै रत्नैर्हिरण्येन च भूरिणा ।
गोभिर्वस्त्रैश्च राजेन्द्र विविधैश्च किमिच्छकैः ॥१८॥
18. sumanomodakai ratnairhiraṇyena ca bhūriṇā ,
gobhirvastraiśca rājendra vividhaiśca kimicchakaiḥ.
18. sumanomodakaiḥ ratnaiḥ hiranyena ca bhūriṇā gobhiḥ
vastraiḥ ca rājendra vividhaiḥ ca kimicchakaiḥ
18. rājendra,
(saḥ tān) sumanomodakaiḥ,
ratnaiḥ,
ca bhūriṇā hiranyena,
gobhiḥ,
ca vastraiḥ,
ca vividhaiḥ kimicchakaiḥ (sampūjayām āsa)
18. O king of kings (Rājendra), he (honored them) with flowers and sweets, with jewels, and with abundant gold, with cows and clothes, and with various desired objects.
ततः पुण्याहघोषोऽभूद्दिवं स्तब्ध्वेव भारत ।
सुहृदां हर्षजननः पुण्यः श्रुतिसुखावहः ॥१९॥
19. tataḥ puṇyāhaghoṣo'bhūddivaṁ stabdhveva bhārata ,
suhṛdāṁ harṣajananaḥ puṇyaḥ śrutisukhāvahaḥ.
19. tataḥ puṇyāhaghoṣaḥ abhūt divam stabdhvā iva
bhārata suhṛdām harṣajananaḥ puṇyaḥ śrutisukhāvahaḥ
19. bhārata tataḥ puṇyāhaghoṣaḥ divam stabdhvā iva
abhūt suhṛdām harṣajananaḥ puṇyaḥ śrutisukhāvahaḥ
19. Then, O Bhārata, an auspicious proclamation arose, as if stunning the sky. It was sacred, brought joy to friends, and was pleasing to the ear.
हंसवन्नेदुषां राजन्द्विजानां तत्र भारती ।
शुश्रुवे वेदविदुषां पुष्कलार्थपदाक्षरा ॥२०॥
20. haṁsavanneduṣāṁ rājandvijānāṁ tatra bhāratī ,
śuśruve vedaviduṣāṁ puṣkalārthapadākṣarā.
20. haṃsavat neduṣām rājan dvijānām tatra bhāratī
śuśruve vedaviduṣām puṣkalārthapadākṣarā
20. rājan tatra vedaviduṣām haṃsavat neduṣām
dvijānām bhāratī puṣkalārthapadākṣarā śuśruve
20. O King, there the speech of the Brahmins (dvijānām), who were knowledgeable in the Vedas and whose voices resounded like swans, was heard. This speech was rich in meaning, words, and syllables.
ततो दुन्दुभिनिर्घोषः शङ्खानां च मनोरमः ।
जयं प्रवदतां तत्र स्वनः प्रादुरभून्नृप ॥२१॥
21. tato dundubhinirghoṣaḥ śaṅkhānāṁ ca manoramaḥ ,
jayaṁ pravadatāṁ tatra svanaḥ prādurabhūnnṛpa.
21. tataḥ dundubhinirghoṣaḥ śaṅkhānām ca manoramaḥ
jayam pravadatām tatra svanaḥ prādurbhūt nṛpa
21. nṛpa tataḥ tatra jayam pravadatām dundubhinirghoṣaḥ
ca śaṅkhānām manoramaḥ svanaḥ prādurbhūt
21. Then, O King, a charming sound arose there, that of drums and conch shells, from those proclaiming victory.
निःशब्दे च स्थिते तत्र ततो विप्रजने पुनः ।
राजानं ब्राह्मणच्छद्मा चार्वाको राक्षसोऽब्रवीत् ॥२२॥
22. niḥśabde ca sthite tatra tato viprajane punaḥ ,
rājānaṁ brāhmaṇacchadmā cārvāko rākṣaso'bravīt.
22. niḥśabde ca sthite tatra tataḥ viprajane punaḥ
rājānam brāhmaṇacchadmā cārvākaḥ rākṣasaḥ abravīt
22. ca tatra niḥśabde sthite tataḥ punaḥ viprajane
brāhmaṇacchadmā rākṣasaḥ cārvākaḥ rājānam abravīt
22. And when silence fell there, then again, among the assembly of Brahmins (viprajane), the demon (rākṣasaḥ) Chārvāka, disguised as a Brahmin, addressed the King.
तत्र दुर्योधनसखा भिक्षुरूपेण संवृतः ।
सांख्यः शिखी त्रिदण्डी च धृष्टो विगतसाध्वसः ॥२३॥
23. tatra duryodhanasakhā bhikṣurūpeṇa saṁvṛtaḥ ,
sāṁkhyaḥ śikhī tridaṇḍī ca dhṛṣṭo vigatasādhvasaḥ.
23. tatra duryodhanasakā bhikṣurūpeṇa saṃvṛtaḥ
sāṅkhyaḥ śikhī tridaṇḍī ca dhṛṣṭaḥ vigatasādhvasaḥ
23. tatra duryodhanasakā bhikṣurūpeṇa saṃvṛtaḥ,
sāṅkhyaḥ śikhī tridaṇḍī ca,
dhṛṣṭaḥ vigatasādhvasaḥ
23. There, Duryodhana's friend, disguised as a mendicant, was present. He was a Sāṅkhya practitioner, marked by a topknot and a triple staff, and was impudent and fearless.
वृतः सर्वैस्तदा विप्रैराशीर्वादविवक्षुभिः ।
परंसहस्रै राजेन्द्र तपोनियमसंस्थितैः ॥२४॥
24. vṛtaḥ sarvaistadā viprairāśīrvādavivakṣubhiḥ ,
paraṁsahasrai rājendra taponiyamasaṁsthitaiḥ.
24. vṛtaḥ sarvaiḥ tadā vipraiḥ āśīrvādavivakṣubhiḥ
parasaṃhasrai rājendra taponiyamasaṃsthitaiḥ
24. rājendra,
tadā saḥ sarvaiḥ āśīrvādavivakṣubhiḥ taponiyamasaṃsthitaiḥ parasaṃhasrai vipraiḥ vṛtaḥ
24. O king of kings, he was then surrounded by all those Brahmins, numbering in the thousands, who were established in severe ascetic practices (tapas) and vows, and were eager to pronounce blessings.
स दुष्टः पापमाशंसन्पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम् ।
अनामन्त्र्यैव तान्विप्रांस्तमुवाच महीपतिम् ॥२५॥
25. sa duṣṭaḥ pāpamāśaṁsanpāṇḍavānāṁ mahātmanām ,
anāmantryaiva tānviprāṁstamuvāca mahīpatim.
25. saḥ duṣṭaḥ pāpam āśaṃsan pāṇḍavānām mahātmanām
anāmantrya eva tān viprān tam uvāca mahīpatim
25. saḥ duṣṭaḥ pāṇḍavānām mahātmanām pāpam āśaṃsan,
tān viprān anāmantrya eva,
tam mahīpatim uvāca.
25. That wicked man, wishing evil upon the great-souled Pāṇḍavas, addressed that king without even consulting those Brahmins.
इमे प्राहुर्द्विजाः सर्वे समारोप्य वचो मयि ।
धिग्भवन्तं कुनृपतिं ज्ञातिघातिनमस्तु वै ॥२६॥
26. ime prāhurdvijāḥ sarve samāropya vaco mayi ,
dhigbhavantaṁ kunṛpatiṁ jñātighātinamastu vai.
26. ime prāhuḥ dvijāḥ sarve samāropya vacaḥ mayi
dhik bhavantam kunṛpatim jñātighātinam astu vai
26. sarve ime dvijāḥ,
mayi vacaḥ samāropya,
prāhuḥ: "dhik bhavantam kunṛpatim jñātighātinam! vai astu.
"
26. All these Brahmins, entrusting their words to me, declare: 'Shame upon you, O wicked king, you who are a slayer of kinsmen! Let it indeed be so!'
किं ते राज्येन कौन्तेय कृत्वेमं ज्ञातिसंक्षयम् ।
घातयित्वा गुरूंश्चैव मृतं श्रेयो न जीवितम् ॥२७॥
27. kiṁ te rājyena kaunteya kṛtvemaṁ jñātisaṁkṣayam ,
ghātayitvā gurūṁścaiva mṛtaṁ śreyo na jīvitam.
27. kim te rājyena kaunteya kṛtvā imam jñātisaṃkṣayam
| ghātayitvā gurūn ca eva mṛtam śreyaḥ na jīvitam
27. kaunteya,
imam jñātisaṃkṣayam kṛtvā,
gurūn ca eva ghātayitvā,
te rājyena kim? mṛtam śreyaḥ,
jīvitam na.
27. What good is a kingdom to you, O son of Kunti, after causing this destruction of your kinsmen? Having killed even your teachers (guru), death is preferable to life.
इति ते वै द्विजाः श्रुत्वा तस्य घोरस्य रक्षसः ।
विव्यथुश्चुक्रुशुश्चैव तस्य वाक्यप्रधर्षिताः ॥२८॥
28. iti te vai dvijāḥ śrutvā tasya ghorasya rakṣasaḥ ,
vivyathuścukruśuścaiva tasya vākyapradharṣitāḥ.
28. iti te vai dvijāḥ śrutvā tasya ghorasya rakṣasaḥ |
vivyathuḥ cukruśuḥ ca eva tasya vākyapradharṣitāḥ
28. iti te dvijāḥ vai tasya ghorasya rakṣasaḥ śrutvā,
tasya vākyapradharṣitāḥ (santaḥ) vivyathuḥ ca eva cukruśuḥ.
28. Having heard this from that terrible demon (rakṣas), those twice-born ones (dvija), tormented by his words, became distressed and cried out.
ततस्ते ब्राह्मणाः सर्वे स च राजा युधिष्ठिरः ।
व्रीडिताः परमोद्विग्नास्तूष्णीमासन्विशां पते ॥२९॥
29. tataste brāhmaṇāḥ sarve sa ca rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
vrīḍitāḥ paramodvignāstūṣṇīmāsanviśāṁ pate.
29. tataḥ te brāhmaṇāḥ sarve saḥ ca rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
| vrīḍitāḥ paramodvignāḥ tūṣṇīm āsan viśām pate
29. tataḥ,
he viśām pate,
te sarve brāhmaṇāḥ ca saḥ rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ (ca) vrīḍitāḥ paramodvignāḥ (santaḥ) tūṣṇīm āsan.
29. Then, all those brahmins, and that King Yudhishthira, became ashamed and extremely agitated, remaining silent, O lord of men (viśāṃ pate).
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
प्रसीदन्तु भवन्तो मे प्रणतस्याभियाचतः ।
प्रत्यापन्नं व्यसनिनं न मां धिक्कर्तुमर्हथ ॥३०॥
30. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
prasīdantu bhavanto me praṇatasyābhiyācataḥ ,
pratyāpannaṁ vyasaninaṁ na māṁ dhikkartumarhatha.

pratyāpannam vyasaninam mām dhikkartum na arhatha.
30. Yudhishthira said: May you gentlemen be gracious to me, who bows down and implores. You ought not to scorn me, who has fallen into misfortune and returned.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततो राजन्ब्राह्मणास्ते सर्व एव विशां पते ।
ऊचुर्नैतद्वचोऽस्माकं श्रीरस्तु तव पार्थिव ॥३१॥
31. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato rājanbrāhmaṇāste sarva eva viśāṁ pate ,
ūcurnaitadvaco'smākaṁ śrīrastu tava pārthiva.
31. Vaiśampāyana uvāca tataḥ rājan brāhmaṇāḥ te sarve eva viśām
pate ūcuḥ na etat vacaḥ asmākam śrīḥ astu tava pārthiva
31. Vaiśampāyana uvāca tataḥ rājan viśām pate pārthiva sarve
eva te brāhmaṇāḥ ūcuḥ etat vacaḥ asmākam na śrīḥ tava astu
31. Vaiśampāyana said: "Then, O King, O lord of the people, all those brahmins declared, 'This statement is not ours. May prosperity be with you, O ruler of the earth.'"
जज्ञुश्चैव महात्मानस्ततस्तं ज्ञानचक्षुषा ।
ब्राह्मणा वेदविद्वांसस्तपोभिर्विमलीकृताः ॥३२॥
32. jajñuścaiva mahātmānastatastaṁ jñānacakṣuṣā ,
brāhmaṇā vedavidvāṁsastapobhirvimalīkṛtāḥ.
32. jajñuḥ ca eva mahātmānaḥ tataḥ tam jñānacakṣuṣā
brāhmaṇāḥ vedavidvāṃsaḥ tapobhiḥ vimalīkṛtāḥ
32. ca eva vedavidvāṃsaḥ tapobhiḥ vimalīkṛtāḥ te
mahātmānaḥ brāhmaṇāḥ tataḥ tam jñānacakṣuṣā jajñuḥ
32. And indeed, those great-souled brahmins, who were learned in the Vedas and purified by their spiritual austerities (tapas), then perceived him with their eye of knowledge.
ब्राह्मणा ऊचुः ।
एष दुर्योधनसखा चार्वाको नाम राक्षसः ।
परिव्राजकरूपेण हितं तस्य चिकीर्षति ॥३३॥
33. brāhmaṇā ūcuḥ ,
eṣa duryodhanasakhā cārvāko nāma rākṣasaḥ ,
parivrājakarūpeṇa hitaṁ tasya cikīrṣati.
33. brāhmaṇāḥ ūcuḥ eṣaḥ duryodhanasakhā cārvākaḥ nāma
rākṣasaḥ parivrājakarūpeṇa hitam tasya cikīrṣati

rākṣasaḥ parivrājakarūpeṇa tasya hitam cikīrṣati
33. The brahmins said: "This individual is a demon named Charvaka, a friend of Duryodhana. He desires to act for Duryodhana's benefit (hitam) in the guise of a wandering ascetic."
न वयं ब्रूम धर्मात्मन्व्येतु ते भयमीदृशम् ।
उपतिष्ठतु कल्याणं भवन्तं भ्रातृभिः सह ॥३४॥
34. na vayaṁ brūma dharmātmanvyetu te bhayamīdṛśam ,
upatiṣṭhatu kalyāṇaṁ bhavantaṁ bhrātṛbhiḥ saha.
34. na vayam brūma dharmātman vyetu te bhayam īdṛśam
upatiṣṭhatu kalyāṇam bhavantam bhrātṛbhiḥ saha
34. dharmātman vayam na brūma īdṛśam bhayam te vyetu
kalyāṇam bhrātṛbhiḥ saha bhavantam upatiṣṭhatu
34. “We did not say this, O righteous soul (dharmātman). May such fear depart from you. May well-being (kalyāṇam) come upon you along with your brothers."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततस्ते ब्राह्मणाः सर्वे हुंकारैः क्रोधमूर्छिताः ।
निर्भर्त्सयन्तः शुचयो निजघ्नुः पापराक्षसम् ॥३५॥
35. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataste brāhmaṇāḥ sarve huṁkāraiḥ krodhamūrchitāḥ ,
nirbhartsayantaḥ śucayo nijaghnuḥ pāparākṣasam.
35. Vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca | tataḥ te
brāhmaṇāḥ sarve huṃkāraiḥ
krodhamūrcitāḥ | nirbhartsayantaḥ
śucayaḥ nijaghnuḥ pāparākṣasam
35. Vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca tataḥ sarve śucayaḥ te brāhmaṇāḥ huṃkāraiḥ
krodhamūrcitāḥ nirbhartsayantaḥ pāparākṣasam nijaghnuḥ
35. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, all those pure Brahmins, overwhelmed with rage by their fierce shouts of 'hum', rebuked and killed the sinful demon.
स पपात विनिर्दग्धस्तेजसा ब्रह्मवादिनाम् ।
महेन्द्राशनिनिर्दग्धः पादपोऽङ्कुरवानिव ॥३६॥
36. sa papāta vinirdagdhastejasā brahmavādinām ,
mahendrāśaninirdagdhaḥ pādapo'ṅkuravāniva.
36. saḥ papāta vinirdagdhaḥ tejasā brahmavādinām
| mahendrāśaninirdagdhaḥ pādapaḥ aṅkuravān iva
36. saḥ brahmavādinām tejasā vinirdagdhaḥ papāta

36. He fell, completely consumed by the spiritual power (tejas) of those who spoke of Brahman, just like a tree, along with its sprouts, is utterly incinerated by the lightning of Mahendra (Indra).
पूजिताश्च ययुर्विप्रा राजानमभिनन्द्य तम् ।
राजा च हर्षमापेदे पाण्डवः ससुहृज्जनः ॥३७॥
37. pūjitāśca yayurviprā rājānamabhinandya tam ,
rājā ca harṣamāpede pāṇḍavaḥ sasuhṛjjanaḥ.
37. pūjitāḥ ca yayuḥ viprāḥ rājānam abhinandya tam
| rājā ca harṣam āpede pāṇḍavaḥ sasuhṛjjanaḥ
37. pūjitāḥ viprāḥ ca tam rājānam abhinandya yayuḥ

37. The honored Brahmins, after greeting that king, departed. And the Pāṇḍava king, along with his friends and kinsmen, attained great joy.
वासुदेव उवाच ।
ब्राह्मणास्तात लोकेऽस्मिन्नर्चनीयाः सदा मम ।
एते भूमिचरा देवा वाग्विषाः सुप्रसादकाः ॥३८॥
38. vāsudeva uvāca ,
brāhmaṇāstāta loke'sminnarcanīyāḥ sadā mama ,
ete bhūmicarā devā vāgviṣāḥ suprasādakāḥ.
38. Vāsudevaḥ uvāca | brāhmaṇāḥ tāta loke asmin arcanīyāḥ
sadā mama | ete bhūmicarāḥ devāḥ vāgviṣāḥ suprasādakāḥ
38. Vāsudevaḥ uvāca tāta,
asmin loke brāhmaṇāḥ sadā mama arcanīyāḥ ete bhūmicarāḥ devāḥ vāgviṣāḥ suprasādakāḥ
38. Vāsudeva said: O dear one, in this world, Brahmins are always worthy of my veneration. These are verily gods who walk the earth, whose words can be like poison, and who are capable of bestowing great blessings.
पुरा कृतयुगे तात चार्वाको नाम राक्षसः ।
तपस्तेपे महाबाहो बदर्यां बहुवत्सरम् ॥३९॥
39. purā kṛtayuge tāta cārvāko nāma rākṣasaḥ ,
tapastepe mahābāho badaryāṁ bahuvatsaram.

39. O dear one (tāta), O mighty-armed one (mahābāho), formerly, in the Kṛta Yuga, a demon named Cārvāka performed great austerity (tapas) for many years in Badarī.
छन्द्यमानो वरेणाथ ब्रह्मणा स पुनः पुनः ।
अभयं सर्वभूतेभ्यो वरयामास भारत ॥४०॥
40. chandyamāno vareṇātha brahmaṇā sa punaḥ punaḥ ,
abhayaṁ sarvabhūtebhyo varayāmāsa bhārata.
40. chandyamānaḥ vareṇa atha brahmaṇā saḥ punaḥ
punaḥ abhayam sarvabhūtebhyaḥ varayāmāsa bhārata
40. atha bhārata,

40. Then, O Bhārata, as he was repeatedly urged by Brahmā with an offer of a boon, he requested fearlessness (abhayam) from all beings.
द्विजावमानादन्यत्र प्रादाद्वरमनुत्तमम् ।
अभयं सर्वभूतेभ्यस्ततस्तस्मै जगत्प्रभुः ॥४१॥
41. dvijāvamānādanyatra prādādvaramanuttamam ,
abhayaṁ sarvabhūtebhyastatastasmai jagatprabhuḥ.
41. dvija-avamānāt anyatra prādāt varam anuttamam
abhayam sarvabhūtebhyaḥ tataḥ tasmai jagatprabhuḥ
41. tataḥ jagatprabhuḥ tasmai dvijāvamānāt anyatra
sarvabhūtebhyaḥ abhayam anuttamam varam prādāt
41. Then, the Lord of the world (Brahmā) granted him that unsurpassed boon of fearlessness (abhayam) from all beings, with the sole exception of disrespect towards the twice-born (dvija).
स तु लब्धवरः पापो देवानमितविक्रमः ।
राक्षसस्तापयामास तीव्रकर्मा महाबलः ॥४२॥
42. sa tu labdhavaraḥ pāpo devānamitavikramaḥ ,
rākṣasastāpayāmāsa tīvrakarmā mahābalaḥ.
42. saḥ tu labdhavaraḥ pāpaḥ devān amitavikramaḥ
rākṣasaḥ tāpayāmāsa tīvrakarmā mahābalaḥ
42. tu saḥ labdhavaraḥ pāpaḥ amitavikramaḥ
tīvrakarmā mahābalaḥ rākṣasaḥ devān tāpayāmāsa
42. But that sinful demon (rākṣasa), having obtained the boon, being of immeasurable prowess, having fierce deeds (karma), and great strength, began to torment the gods.
ततो देवाः समेत्याथ ब्रह्माणमिदमब्रुवन् ।
वधाय रक्षसस्तस्य बलविप्रकृतास्तदा ॥४३॥
43. tato devāḥ sametyātha brahmāṇamidamabruvan ,
vadhāya rakṣasastasya balaviprakṛtāstadā.
43. tataḥ devāḥ sametya atha brahmāṇam idam abruvan
vadhāya rakṣasaḥ tasya balaviprakṛtāḥ tadā
43. tadā balaviprakṛtāḥ devāḥ atha sametya tataḥ
tasya rakṣasaḥ vadhāya idam brahmāṇam abruvan
43. Then, having assembled, the gods, who were at that time harassed by the power of that demon, spoke this to Brahmā regarding his destruction.
तानुवाचाव्ययो देवो विहितं तत्र वै मया ।
यथास्य भविता मृत्युरचिरेणैव भारत ॥४४॥
44. tānuvācāvyayo devo vihitaṁ tatra vai mayā ,
yathāsya bhavitā mṛtyuracireṇaiva bhārata.
44. tān uvāca avyayaḥ devaḥ vihitam tatra vai mayā
yathā asya bhavitā mṛtyuḥ acireṇa eva bhārata
44. bhārata avyayaḥ devaḥ tān uvāca.
mayā tatra vai vihitam yathā asya mṛtyuḥ acireṇa eva bhavitā
44. The imperishable god (Brahmā) then told them, "Indeed, I have already arranged there, O Bhārata, how his death will occur very soon."
राजा दुर्योधनो नाम सखास्य भविता नृप ।
तस्य स्नेहावबद्धोऽसौ ब्राह्मणानवमंस्यते ॥४५॥
45. rājā duryodhano nāma sakhāsya bhavitā nṛpa ,
tasya snehāvabaddho'sau brāhmaṇānavamaṁsyate.
45. rājā duryodhanaḥ nāma sakhā asya bhavitā nṛpa
tasya snehāvabaddhaḥ asau brāhmaṇān avamansyate
45. nṛpa,
duryodhanaḥ nāma rājā asya sakhā bhavitā.
asau tasya snehāvabaddhaḥ brāhmaṇān avamansyate
45. O King, a monarch named Duryodhana will become his friend. Bound by affection to him, this demon will then disrespect the Brahmins.
तत्रैनं रुषिता विप्रा विप्रकारप्रधर्षिताः ।
धक्ष्यन्ति वाग्बलाः पापं ततो नाशं गमिष्यति ॥४६॥
46. tatrainaṁ ruṣitā viprā viprakārapradharṣitāḥ ,
dhakṣyanti vāgbalāḥ pāpaṁ tato nāśaṁ gamiṣyati.
46. tatra enam ruṣitāḥ viprāḥ viprakārapradharṣitāḥ
dhakṣyanti vāgbalāḥ pāpam tataḥ nāśam gamiṣyati
46. tatra viprakārapradharṣitāḥ ruṣitāḥ vāgbalāḥ viprāḥ enam pāpam dhakṣyanti.
tataḥ saḥ nāśam gamiṣyati
46. Then, the Brahmins, angered and greatly insulted, potent in their speech, will curse that wicked one. Consequently, he will meet his destruction.
स एष निहतः शेते ब्रह्मदण्डेन राक्षसः ।
चार्वाको नृपतिश्रेष्ठ मा शुचो भरतर्षभ ॥४७॥
47. sa eṣa nihataḥ śete brahmadaṇḍena rākṣasaḥ ,
cārvāko nṛpatiśreṣṭha mā śuco bharatarṣabha.
47. saḥ eṣaḥ nihataḥ śete brahmadaṇḍena rākṣasaḥ
cārvākaḥ nṛpatiśreṣṭha mā śucaḥ bharatarṣabha
47. nṛpatiśreṣṭha bharatarṣabha saḥ eṣaḥ rākṣasaḥ
cārvākaḥ brahmadaṇḍena nihataḥ śete mā śucaḥ
47. This demon Cārvāka lies here, struck down by the Brahmin's staff. O best of kings, O bull among the Bharatas, do not grieve.
हतास्ते क्षत्रधर्मेण ज्ञातयस्तव पार्थिव ।
स्वर्गताश्च महात्मानो वीराः क्षत्रियपुंगवाः ॥४८॥
48. hatāste kṣatradharmeṇa jñātayastava pārthiva ,
svargatāśca mahātmāno vīrāḥ kṣatriyapuṁgavāḥ.
48. hatāḥ te kṣatradharmeṇa jñātayaḥ tava pārthiva
svargatāḥ ca mahātmānaḥ vīrāḥ kṣatriyapuṅgavāḥ
48. pārthiva tava jñātayaḥ kṣatradharmeṇa hatāḥ te
ca mahātmānaḥ vīrāḥ kṣatriyapuṅgavāḥ svargatāḥ
48. Your relatives, O king, were killed in accordance with the natural law (dharma) of a warrior. And those great-souled heroes, the foremost among kṣatriyas, have gone to heaven.
स त्वमातिष्ठ कल्याणं मा ते भूद्ग्लानिरच्युत ।
शत्रूञ्जहि प्रजा रक्ष द्विजांश्च प्रतिपालय ॥४९॥
49. sa tvamātiṣṭha kalyāṇaṁ mā te bhūdglāniracyuta ,
śatrūñjahi prajā rakṣa dvijāṁśca pratipālaya.
49. saḥ tvam ātiṣṭha kalyāṇam mā te bhūt glāniḥ acyuta
śatrūn jahi prajāḥ rakṣa dvijān ca pratipālaya
49. saḥ tvam acyuta kalyāṇam ātiṣṭha mā te glāniḥ bhūt
śatrūn jahi prajāḥ rakṣa ca dvijān pratipālaya
49. Therefore, you, O unfaltering one (Acyuta), apply yourself to what is good; let no weariness come upon you. Conquer your enemies, protect your subjects, and safeguard the Brahmins.
