वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः प्रयातमात्रेषु पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु ।
पद्भ्यामनुचिता गन्तुं द्रौपदी समुपाविशत् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ prayātamātreṣu pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu ,
padbhyāmanucitā gantuṁ draupadī samupāviśat.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Thereupon, as soon as the great-souled Pandavas had departed, Draupadi, who was unaccustomed to traveling on foot, sat down.
श्रान्ता दुःखपरीता च वातवर्षेण तेन च ।
सौकुमार्याच्च पाञ्चाली संमुमोह यशस्विनी ॥२॥
2. śrāntā duḥkhaparītā ca vātavarṣeṇa tena ca ,
saukumāryācca pāñcālī saṁmumoha yaśasvinī.

2. Weary and overcome with sorrow, and by that wind and rain, the glorious princess of Pañcāla (Draupadi) fainted also due to her tenderness.
सा पात्यमाना मोहेन बाहुभ्यामसितेक्षणा ।
वृत्ताभ्यामनुरूपाभ्यामूरू समवलम्बत ॥३॥
3. sā pātyamānā mohena bāhubhyāmasitekṣaṇā ,
vṛttābhyāmanurūpābhyāmūrū samavalambata.

vṛttābhyām anurūpābhyām ūrū samavalambata
3. She, the black-eyed one, falling due to unconsciousness, supported her thighs with her rounded and shapely arms.
आलम्बमाना सहितावूरू गजकरोपमौ ।
पपात सहसा भूमौ वेपन्ती कदली यथा ॥४॥
4. ālambamānā sahitāvūrū gajakaropamau ,
papāta sahasā bhūmau vepantī kadalī yathā.

4. Holding her joined thighs, which resembled elephant trunks, she suddenly fell to the ground, trembling like a plantain tree.
तां पतन्तीं वरारोहां सज्जमानां लतामिव ।
नकुलः समभिद्रुत्य परिजग्राह वीर्यवान् ॥५॥
5. tāṁ patantīṁ varārohāṁ sajjamānāṁ latāmiva ,
nakulaḥ samabhidrutya parijagrāha vīryavān.

nakulaḥ samabhidrutya parijagāha vīryavān
5. The valorous Nakula rushed towards her, and caught her as she was falling, a woman with excellent thighs, clinging like a creeper.
नकुल उवाच ।
राजन्पाञ्चालराजस्य सुतेयमसितेक्षणा ।
श्रान्ता निपतिता भूमौ तामवेक्षस्व भारत ॥६॥
6. nakula uvāca ,
rājanpāñcālarājasya suteyamasitekṣaṇā ,
śrāntā nipatitā bhūmau tāmavekṣasva bhārata.
6. nakulaḥ uvāca rājan pāñcālarājasya sutā iyam asitekṣaṇā
śrāntā nipatitā bhūmau tām avekṣasva bhārata
6. Nakula said: "O King, this black-eyed daughter of the Pañcāla king has fallen to the ground, exhausted. O descendant of Bharata (bhārata), please look at her."
अदुःखार्हा परं दुःखं प्राप्तेयं मृदुगामिनी ।
आश्वासय महाराज तामिमां श्रमकर्शिताम् ॥७॥
7. aduḥkhārhā paraṁ duḥkhaṁ prāpteyaṁ mṛdugāminī ,
āśvāsaya mahārāja tāmimāṁ śramakarśitām.
7. aduḥkhārhā param duḥkham prāptā iyam mṛdugāminī
āśvāsaya mahārāja tām imām śramakarśitām
7. This gentle-stepping woman, who does not deserve sorrow, has experienced extreme suffering. O Great King, please comfort her, who is emaciated by fatigue.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
राजा तु वचनात्तस्य भृशं दुःखसमन्वितः ।
भीमश्च सहदेवश्च सहसा समुपाद्रवन् ॥८॥
8. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
rājā tu vacanāttasya bhṛśaṁ duḥkhasamanvitaḥ ,
bhīmaśca sahadevaśca sahasā samupādravan.
8. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca rājā tu vacanāt tasya bhṛśaṃ
duḥkhasamanvitaḥ bhīmaḥ ca sahadevaḥ ca sahasā samupādravan
8. Vaiśampāyana said: But the king, deeply afflicted by his words, and Bhīma and Sahadeva, quickly rushed forth.
तामवेक्ष्य तु कौन्तेयो विवर्णवदनां कृशाम् ।
अङ्कमानीय धर्मात्मा पर्यदेवयदातुरः ॥९॥
9. tāmavekṣya tu kaunteyo vivarṇavadanāṁ kṛśām ,
aṅkamānīya dharmātmā paryadevayadāturaḥ.
9. tām avekṣya tu kaunteyaḥ vivarṇavadanām kṛśām
aṅkam ānīya dharmātmā paryadevayat āturaḥ
9. And seeing her, pale-faced and emaciated, the son of Kuntī (Yudhiṣṭhira) drew her onto his lap. The righteous (dharma-ātman) one then lamented, deeply distressed.
कथं वेश्मसु गुप्तेषु स्वास्तीर्णशयनोचिता ।
शेते निपतिता भूमौ सुखार्हा वरवर्णिनी ॥१०॥
10. kathaṁ veśmasu gupteṣu svāstīrṇaśayanocitā ,
śete nipatitā bhūmau sukhārhā varavarṇinī.
10. katham veśmasu gupteṣu svāstīrṇaśayanoicitā
śete nipatitā bhūmau sukhārhā varavarṇinī
10. How can she, accustomed to well-spread beds in private chambers, this beautiful woman (varavarṇinī) who deserves comfort, now lie fallen on the ground?
सुकुमारौ कथं पादौ मुखं च कमलप्रभम् ।
मत्कृतेऽद्य वरार्हायाः श्यामतां समुपागतम् ॥११॥
11. sukumārau kathaṁ pādau mukhaṁ ca kamalaprabham ,
matkṛte'dya varārhāyāḥ śyāmatāṁ samupāgatam.
11. sukumārau katham pādau mukham ca kamalaprabham
matkṛte adya varārhāyāḥ śyāmatām samupāgatam
11. How can her delicate feet and her lotus-like face, which are worthy of excellence, have become dark today because of me?
किमिदं द्यूतकामेन मया कृतमबुद्धिना ।
आदाय कृष्णां चरता वने मृगगणायुते ॥१२॥
12. kimidaṁ dyūtakāmena mayā kṛtamabuddhinā ,
ādāya kṛṣṇāṁ caratā vane mṛgagaṇāyute.
12. kim idam dyūtakāmena mayā kṛtam abuddhinā
ādāya kṛṣṇām caratā vane mṛgagaṇāyute
12. What is this that I, foolish and desirous of gambling, have done? Having taken Krishna (Draupadi), I am now wandering in a forest teeming with herds of deer.
सुखं प्राप्स्यति पाञ्चाली पाण्डवान्प्राप्य वै पतीन् ।
इति द्रुपदराजेन पित्रा दत्तायतेक्षणा ॥१३॥
13. sukhaṁ prāpsyati pāñcālī pāṇḍavānprāpya vai patīn ,
iti drupadarājena pitrā dattāyatekṣaṇā.
13. sukham prāpsyati pāñcālī pāṇḍavān prāpya vai
patīn iti drupadarājena pitrā dattā āyatekṣaṇā
13. King Drupada, her father, thinking 'Pancali will certainly attain happiness upon obtaining the Pandavas as husbands,' gave her, the wide-eyed one.
तत्सर्वमनवाप्यैव श्रमशोकाद्धि कर्शिता ।
शेते निपतिता भूमौ पापस्य मम कर्मभिः ॥१४॥
14. tatsarvamanavāpyaiva śramaśokāddhi karśitā ,
śete nipatitā bhūmau pāpasya mama karmabhiḥ.
14. tat sarvam anavāpya eva śramaśokāt hi karśitā
śete nipatitā bhūmau pāpasya mama karmabhiḥ
14. Indeed, without having obtained any of that, she, emaciated by fatigue and sorrow, lies fallen on the ground because of my sinful deeds (karma).
तथा लालप्यमाने तु धर्मराजे युधिष्ठिरे ।
धौम्यप्रभृतयः सर्वे तत्राजग्मुर्द्विजोत्तमाः ॥१५॥
15. tathā lālapyamāne tu dharmarāje yudhiṣṭhire ,
dhaumyaprabhṛtayaḥ sarve tatrājagmurdvijottamāḥ.
15. tathā lālapyamāne tu dharmarāje yudhiṣṭhire
dhaumyaprabhṛtayaḥ sarve tatra ājagmuḥ dvijottamāḥ
15. As King Yudhishthira, the embodiment of righteousness (dharma), was lamenting thus, all the foremost among the twice-born (dvija), led by Dhaumya, arrived there.
ते समाश्वासयामासुराशीर्भिश्चाप्यपूजयन् ।
रक्षोघ्नांश्च तथा मन्त्राञ्जेपुश्चक्रुश्च ते क्रियाः ॥१६॥
16. te samāśvāsayāmāsurāśīrbhiścāpyapūjayan ,
rakṣoghnāṁśca tathā mantrāñjepuścakruśca te kriyāḥ.
16. te samāśvāsayāmāsuḥ āśīrbhiḥ ca api apūjayan
rakṣoghnān ca tathā mantrān jepuḥ cakruḥ ca te kriyāḥ
16. They reassured her and honored her with blessings. Additionally, they recited demon-destroying incantations (mantras) and performed the necessary rites.
पठ्यमानेषु मन्त्रेषु शान्त्यर्थं परमर्षिभिः ।
स्पृश्यमाना करैः शीतैः पाण्डवैश्च मुहुर्मुहुः ॥१७॥
17. paṭhyamāneṣu mantreṣu śāntyarthaṁ paramarṣibhiḥ ,
spṛśyamānā karaiḥ śītaiḥ pāṇḍavaiśca muhurmuhuḥ.
17. paṭhyamāneṣu mantreṣu śāntyartham paramarṣibhiḥ
spṛśyamānā karaiḥ śītaiḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ ca muhurmuhuḥ
17. While incantations (mantras) were being recited by the great sages for pacification, she was repeatedly touched by the cool hands of the Pāṇḍavas.
सेव्यमाना च शीतेन जलमिश्रेण वायुना ।
पाञ्चाली सुखमासाद्य लेभे चेतः शनैः शनैः ॥१८॥
18. sevyamānā ca śītena jalamiśreṇa vāyunā ,
pāñcālī sukhamāsādya lebhe cetaḥ śanaiḥ śanaiḥ.
18. sevyamānā ca śītena jalamiśreṇa vāyunā pāñcālī
sukham āsādya lebhe cetaḥ śanaiḥ śanaiḥ
18. And being attended by a cool, water-laden breeze, Pañcālī, having attained comfort, slowly regained her mind (cetas).
परिगृह्य च तां दीनां कृष्णामजिनसंस्तरे ।
तदा विश्रामयामासुर्लब्धसंज्ञां तपस्विनीम् ॥१९॥
19. parigṛhya ca tāṁ dīnāṁ kṛṣṇāmajinasaṁstare ,
tadā viśrāmayāmāsurlabdhasaṁjñāṁ tapasvinīm.
19. parigṛhya ca tām dīnām kṛṣṇām ajinasaṃstare
tadā viśrāmayāmāsuḥ labdhasaṃjñām tapasvinīm
19. And having taken that distressed Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), they then laid her down on a deer-skin mat. She was a suffering woman (tapasvinī) who had regained consciousness.
तस्या यमौ रक्ततलौ पादौ पूजितलक्षणौ ।
कराभ्यां किणजाताभ्यां शनकैः संववाहतुः ॥२०॥
20. tasyā yamau raktatalau pādau pūjitalakṣaṇau ,
karābhyāṁ kiṇajātābhyāṁ śanakaiḥ saṁvavāhatuḥ.
20. tasyāḥ yamau raktatalau pādau pūjitalakṣaṇau
karābhyām kiṇajātābhyām śanakaiḥ saṃvavāhatuḥ
20. Nakula and Sahadeva, with their calloused hands, gently massaged her feet, which had auspicious marks and red soles.
पर्याश्वासयदप्येनां धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
उवाच च कुरुश्रेष्ठो भीमसेनमिदं वचः ॥२१॥
21. paryāśvāsayadapyenāṁ dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
uvāca ca kuruśreṣṭho bhīmasenamidaṁ vacaḥ.
21. paryāśvāsayat api enām dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
uvāca ca kuruśreṣṭhaḥ bhīmasenam idam vacaḥ
21. Yudhiṣṭhira, the King of Righteousness (dharma), also comforted her, and that best among the Kurus spoke these words to Bhīmasena.
बहवः पर्वता भीम विषमा हिमदुर्गमाः ।
तेषु कृष्णा महाबाहो कथं नु विचरिष्यति ॥२२॥
22. bahavaḥ parvatā bhīma viṣamā himadurgamāḥ ,
teṣu kṛṣṇā mahābāho kathaṁ nu vicariṣyati.
22. bahavaḥ parvatāḥ bhīma viṣamāḥ himadurgamāḥ
teṣu kṛṣṇā mahābāho kathaṃ nu vicariṣyati
22. O Bhīma, there are many mountains that are rugged and impassable due to snow. O mighty-armed one, how will Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) possibly travel through them?
भीमसेन उवाच ।
त्वां राजन्राजपुत्रीं च यमौ च पुरुषर्षभौ ।
स्वयं नेष्यामि राजेन्द्र मा विषादे मनः कृथाः ॥२३॥
23. bhīmasena uvāca ,
tvāṁ rājanrājaputrīṁ ca yamau ca puruṣarṣabhau ,
svayaṁ neṣyāmi rājendra mā viṣāde manaḥ kṛthāḥ.
23. bhīmasenaḥ uvāca tvām rājan rājaputrīm ca yamau ca
puruṣarṣabhau svayam neṣyāmi rājendra mā viṣāde manaḥ kṛthāḥ
23. Bhīmasena said: "O King, O best of kings, I myself will lead you, the princess, and the two twins, who are the best among men (puruṣa). Do not let your mind succumb to dejection."
अथ वासौ मया जातो विहगो मद्बलोपमः ।
वहेदनघ सर्वान्नो वचनात्ते घटोत्कचः ॥२४॥
24. atha vāsau mayā jāto vihago madbalopamaḥ ,
vahedanagha sarvānno vacanātte ghaṭotkacaḥ.
24. atha vā asau mayā jātaḥ vihagaḥ matbalopamaḥ
vahet anagha sarvān naḥ vacanāt te ghaṭotkacaḥ
24. Or, that son of mine, Ghaṭotkaca, who possesses strength like mine and can traverse the sky, should carry all of us at your command, O sinless one.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
अनुज्ञातो धर्मराज्ञा पुत्रं सस्मार राक्षसम् ।
घटोत्कचश्च धर्मात्मा स्मृतमात्रः पितुस्तदा ।
कृताञ्जलिरुपातिष्ठदभिवाद्याथ पाण्डवान् ॥२५॥
25. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
anujñāto dharmarājñā putraṁ sasmāra rākṣasam ,
ghaṭotkacaśca dharmātmā smṛtamātraḥ pitustadā ,
kṛtāñjalirupātiṣṭhadabhivādyātha pāṇḍavān.
25. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca anujñātaḥ dharmarājñā
putram sasmāra rākṣasam ghaṭotkacaḥ ca
dharmātmā smṛtamātraḥ pituḥ tadā kṛtāñjaliḥ
upa atiṣṭhat abhivādya atha pāṇḍavān
25. Vaiśampāyana said: Having received permission from Yudhishthira, the king upholding righteousness (dharma), Bhīma remembered his Rākṣasa son. And Ghaṭotkaca, whose spirit (ātman) was righteous (dharma), as soon as his father remembered him, then stood before them with folded hands, after respectfully greeting the Pāṇḍavas.
ब्राह्मणांश्च महाबाहुः स च तैरभिनन्दितः ।
उवाच भीमसेनं स पितरं सत्यविक्रमः ॥२६॥
26. brāhmaṇāṁśca mahābāhuḥ sa ca tairabhinanditaḥ ,
uvāca bhīmasenaṁ sa pitaraṁ satyavikramaḥ.
26. brāhmaṇān ca mahābāhuḥ sa ca taiḥ abhinanditaḥ
uvāca bhīmasenam sa pitaram satyavikramaḥ
26. And the mighty-armed (mahābāhu) Ghaṭotkaca also greeted the Brahmins, and he was congratulated by them (the Pāṇḍavas and the Brahmins). That one, whose valor (vikrama) was true, then addressed Bhīmasena, his father.
स्मृतोऽस्मि भवता शीघ्रं शुश्रूषुरहमागतः ।
आज्ञापय महाबाहो सर्वं कर्तास्म्यसंशयम् ।
तच्छ्रुत्वा भीमसेनस्तु राक्षसं परिषस्वजे ॥२७॥
27. smṛto'smi bhavatā śīghraṁ śuśrūṣurahamāgataḥ ,
ājñāpaya mahābāho sarvaṁ kartāsmyasaṁśayam ,
tacchrutvā bhīmasenastu rākṣasaṁ pariṣasvaje.
27. smṛtaḥ asmi bhavatā śīghram śuśrūṣuḥ
aham āgataḥ ājñāpaya mahābāho sarvam
kartā asmi asaṃśayam tat śrutvā
bhīmasenaḥ tu rākṣasam pariṣasvaje
27. Ghaṭotkaca said: 'I have been quickly remembered by you. I have come, eager to serve. O mighty-armed one (mahābāhu), command me; I will certainly do everything without doubt.' Having heard that, Bhīmasena then embraced his Rākṣasa son.
