वैशंपायन उवाच ।
अर्जुनस्तु परं यत्नमातस्थे गुरुपूजने ।
अस्त्रे च परमं योगं प्रियो द्रोणस्य चाभवत् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
arjunastu paraṁ yatnamātasthe gurupūjane ,
astre ca paramaṁ yogaṁ priyo droṇasya cābhavat.

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: But Arjuna, for his part, applied supreme effort to honoring his teacher (guru). He also attained supreme mastery (yoga) in weaponry and became very dear to Droṇa.
द्रोणेन तु तदाहूय रहस्युक्तोऽन्नसाधकः ।
अन्धकारेऽर्जुनायान्नं न देयं ते कथंचन ॥२॥
2. droṇena tu tadāhūya rahasyukto'nnasādhakaḥ ,
andhakāre'rjunāyānnaṁ na deyaṁ te kathaṁcana.

2. Drona then called the food preparer and secretly told him, "You must not give food to Arjuna in the dark by any means."
ततः कदाचिद्भुञ्जाने प्रववौ वायुरर्जुने ।
तेन तत्र प्रदीपः स दीप्यमानो निवापितः ॥३॥
3. tataḥ kadācidbhuñjāne pravavau vāyurarjune ,
tena tatra pradīpaḥ sa dīpyamāno nivāpitaḥ.
3. tataḥ kadācit bhuñjāne pravavau vāyuḥ arjune
tena tatra pradīpaḥ saḥ dīpyamānaḥ nivāpitaḥ
3. Then, one day, as Arjuna was eating, the wind blew. Because of it, the shining lamp that was there was extinguished.
भुङ्क्त एवार्जुनो भक्तं न चास्यास्याद्व्यमुह्यत ।
हस्तस्तेजस्विनो नित्यमन्नग्रहणकारणात् ।
तदभ्यासकृतं मत्वा रात्रावभ्यस्त पाण्डवः ॥४॥
4. bhuṅkta evārjuno bhaktaṁ na cāsyāsyādvyamuhyata ,
hastastejasvino nityamannagrahaṇakāraṇāt ,
tadabhyāsakṛtaṁ matvā rātrāvabhyasta pāṇḍavaḥ.
4. bhuṅkte eva arjunaḥ bhaktam na ca asya
āsyāt vi amuhyata hastaḥ tejasvinaḥ
nityam annagrahaṇakāraṇāt tat abhyāsakṛtam
matvā rātrau abhyasta pāṇḍavaḥ
4. Arjuna continued eating, and his hand did not miss his mouth. He realized that his energetic hand, constantly practiced in picking up food, was acting instinctively. Considering this a result of practice, the Pandava practiced even at night.
तस्य ज्यातलनिर्घोषं द्रोणः शुश्राव भारत ।
उपेत्य चैनमुत्थाय परिष्वज्येदमब्रवीत् ॥५॥
5. tasya jyātalanirghoṣaṁ droṇaḥ śuśrāva bhārata ,
upetya cainamutthāya pariṣvajyedamabravīt.
5. tasya jyātalanirghoṣam droṇaḥ śuśrāva bhārata
upetya ca enam utthāya pariṣvajya idam abravīt
5. O descendant of Bharata, Drona heard the sound of his (Arjuna's) bowstring and the slap of his hand-guard. Approaching him, Drona rose, embraced him, and spoke these words.
प्रयतिष्ये तथा कर्तुं यथा नान्यो धनुर्धरः ।
त्वत्समो भविता लोके सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥६॥
6. prayatiṣye tathā kartuṁ yathā nānyo dhanurdharaḥ ,
tvatsamo bhavitā loke satyametadbravīmi te.
6. prayatiṣye tathā kartum yathā na anyaḥ dhanurdharaḥ
tvatsamaḥ bhavitā loke satyam etat bravīmi te
6. I will strive to ensure that no other archer in the world will be your equal. This truth I declare to you.
ततो द्रोणोऽर्जुनं भूयो रथेषु च गजेषु च ।
अश्वेषु भूमावपि च रणशिक्षामशिक्षयत् ॥७॥
7. tato droṇo'rjunaṁ bhūyo ratheṣu ca gajeṣu ca ,
aśveṣu bhūmāvapi ca raṇaśikṣāmaśikṣayat.
7. tataḥ droṇaḥ arjunam bhūyaḥ ratheṣu ca gajeṣu
ca aśveṣu bhūmau api ca raṇaśikṣām aśikṣayat
7. Then Drona again taught Arjuna battle skills for chariots, elephants, horses, and also on the ground.
गदायुद्धेऽसिचर्यायां तोमरप्रासशक्तिषु ।
द्रोणः संकीर्णयुद्धेषु शिक्षयामास पाण्डवम् ॥८॥
8. gadāyuddhe'sicaryāyāṁ tomaraprāsaśaktiṣu ,
droṇaḥ saṁkīrṇayuddheṣu śikṣayāmāsa pāṇḍavam.
8. gadāyuddhe asicaryāyām tomaraprāsaśaktiṣu
droṇaḥ saṃkīrṇayuddheṣu śikṣayām āsa pāṇḍavam
8. Drona taught the Pandava (Arjuna) in mace fighting, sword wielding, and in the use of lances, javelins, and śakti weapons, as well as in various mixed combats.
तस्य तत्कौशलं दृष्ट्वा धनुर्वेदजिघृक्षवः ।
राजानो राजपुत्राश्च समाजग्मुः सहस्रशः ॥९॥
9. tasya tatkauśalaṁ dṛṣṭvā dhanurvedajighṛkṣavaḥ ,
rājāno rājaputrāśca samājagmuḥ sahasraśaḥ.
9. tasya tat kauśalam dṛṣṭvā dhanurvedajighṛkṣavaḥ
rājānaḥ rājaputrāḥ ca samājagmuḥ sahasraśaḥ
9. Upon seeing his skill, kings and princes, aspiring to master the science of archery (dhanurveda), gathered there in thousands.
ततो निषादराजस्य हिरण्यधनुषः सुतः ।
एकलव्यो महाराज द्रोणमभ्याजगाम ह ॥१०॥
10. tato niṣādarājasya hiraṇyadhanuṣaḥ sutaḥ ,
ekalavyo mahārāja droṇamabhyājagāma ha.
10. tataḥ niṣādarājasya hiraṇyadhanuṣaḥ sutaḥ
ekalavyaḥ mahārāja droṇam abhyājagāma ha
10. Then, O great king, Ekalavya, the son of Hiraṇyadhanus, the king of the Niṣādas, indeed came to Drona.
न स तं प्रतिजग्राह नैषादिरिति चिन्तयन् ।
शिष्यं धनुषि धर्मज्ञस्तेषामेवान्ववेक्षया ॥११॥
11. na sa taṁ pratijagrāha naiṣādiriti cintayan ,
śiṣyaṁ dhanuṣi dharmajñasteṣāmevānvavekṣayā.
11. na saḥ tam pratijagrāha naiṣādiḥ iti cintayan
śiṣyam dhanuṣi dharmajñaḥ teṣām eva anvavekṣayā
11. The knower of (natural law) dharma (Drona) did not accept him as a student in archery, thinking 'He is a Niṣāda,' solely out of consideration for those (other) princes.
स तु द्रोणस्य शिरसा पादौ गृह्य परंतपः ।
अरण्यमनुसंप्राप्तः कृत्वा द्रोणं महीमयम् ॥१२॥
12. sa tu droṇasya śirasā pādau gṛhya paraṁtapaḥ ,
araṇyamanusaṁprāptaḥ kṛtvā droṇaṁ mahīmayam.
12. saḥ tu droṇasya śirasā pādau gṛhya paraṃtapaḥ
araṇyam anusaṃprāptaḥ kṛtvā droṇam mahīmayam
12. However, that tormentor of enemies, bowing his head and touching Drona's feet, fashioned an image of Drona from earth and then entered the forest.
तस्मिन्नाचार्यवृत्तिं च परमामास्थितस्तदा ।
इष्वस्त्रे योगमातस्थे परं नियममास्थितः ॥१३॥
13. tasminnācāryavṛttiṁ ca paramāmāsthitastadā ,
iṣvastre yogamātasthe paraṁ niyamamāsthitaḥ.
13. tasmīn ācāryavṛttim ca paramām āsthitaḥ tadā
iṣvastre yogam ātatasthe param niyamam āsthitaḥ
13. At that time, observing the highest conduct befitting a teacher (ācāryavṛtti) towards that (image), and having adopted supreme discipline (niyama), he devoted himself to the practice (yoga) of archery.
परया श्रद्धया युक्तो योगेन परमेण च ।
विमोक्षादानसंधाने लघुत्वं परमाप सः ॥१४॥
14. parayā śraddhayā yukto yogena parameṇa ca ,
vimokṣādānasaṁdhāne laghutvaṁ paramāpa saḥ.
14. parayā śraddhayā yuktaḥ yogena parameṇa ca
vimokṣa ādāna saṃdhāne laghutvam param āpa saḥ
14. Endowed with supreme faith (śraddhā) and the highest discipline (yoga), he attained exceptional dexterity (laghutva) in the releasing, drawing, and aiming of arrows.
अथ द्रोणाभ्यनुज्ञाताः कदाचित्कुरुपाण्डवाः ।
रथैर्विनिर्ययुः सर्वे मृगयामरिमर्दनाः ॥१५॥
15. atha droṇābhyanujñātāḥ kadācitkurupāṇḍavāḥ ,
rathairviniryayuḥ sarve mṛgayāmarimardanāḥ.
15. atha droṇa abhyanujñātāḥ kadācit kurupāṇḍavāḥ
rathaiḥ viniaryayuḥ sarve mṛgayām arimardanāḥ
15. Then, one day, the Kuru and Pandava princes, having obtained Drona's permission, and being vanquishers of foes, all departed in their chariots for a hunt.
तत्रोपकरणं गृह्य नरः कश्चिद्यदृच्छया ।
राजन्ननुजगामैकः श्वानमादाय पाण्डवान् ॥१६॥
16. tatropakaraṇaṁ gṛhya naraḥ kaścidyadṛcchayā ,
rājannanujagāmaikaḥ śvānamādāya pāṇḍavān.
16. tatra upakaraṇam gṛhya naraḥ kaścit yadṛcchayā
rājan anujagāma ekaḥ śvānam ādāya pāṇḍavān
16. There, O King, a certain man, taking his equipment, coincidentally followed the Pandavas, bringing along a dog.
तेषां विचरतां तत्र तत्तत्कर्म चिकीर्षताम् ।
श्वा चरन्स वने मूढो नैषादिं प्रति जग्मिवान् ॥१७॥
17. teṣāṁ vicaratāṁ tatra tattatkarma cikīrṣatām ,
śvā caransa vane mūḍho naiṣādiṁ prati jagmivān.
17. teṣām vicaratām tatra tattat karma cikīrṣatām
śvā caran saḥ vane mūḍhaḥ naiṣādim prati jagmivān
17. While they were roaming there, eager to perform their respective duties (karma), a dog, wandering aimlessly in the forest, did not approach the Niṣāda.
स कृष्णं मलदिग्धाङ्गं कृष्णाजिनधरं वने ।
नैषादिं श्वा समालक्ष्य भषंस्तस्थौ तदन्तिके ॥१८॥
18. sa kṛṣṇaṁ maladigdhāṅgaṁ kṛṣṇājinadharaṁ vane ,
naiṣādiṁ śvā samālakṣya bhaṣaṁstasthau tadantike.
18. saḥ kṛṣṇam maladigdhāṅgam kṛṣṇājinadharam vane
naiṣādim śvā samālakṣya bhaṣan tasthau tadantike
18. That dog, seeing Kṛṣṇa in the forest, his body smeared with dirt and wearing a black deerskin, took him for a Niṣāda and stood barking near him.
तदा तस्याथ भषतः शुनः सप्त शरान्मुखे ।
लाघवं दर्शयन्नस्त्रे मुमोच युगपद्यथा ॥१९॥
19. tadā tasyātha bhaṣataḥ śunaḥ sapta śarānmukhe ,
lāghavaṁ darśayannastre mumoca yugapadyathā.
19. tadā tasya atha bhaṣataḥ śunaḥ sapta śarān mukhe
lāghavam darśayan astre mumoca yugapat yathā
19. Then, demonstrating his swiftness in archery (astra), he simultaneously released seven arrows into the mouth of that barking dog.
स तु श्वा शरपूर्णास्यः पाण्डवानाजगाम ह ।
तं दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवा वीरा विस्मयं परमं ययुः ॥२०॥
20. sa tu śvā śarapūrṇāsyaḥ pāṇḍavānājagāma ha ,
taṁ dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavā vīrā vismayaṁ paramaṁ yayuḥ.
20. saḥ tu śvā śarapurṇāsyaḥ pāṇḍavān ājagāma ha
tam dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavā vīrāḥ vismayam paramam yayuḥ
20. But that dog, with its mouth full of arrows, went to the Pāṇḍavas. Seeing it, the heroic Pāṇḍavas were greatly astonished.
लाघवं शब्दवेधित्वं दृष्ट्वा तत्परमं तदा ।
प्रेक्ष्य तं व्रीडिताश्चासन्प्रशशंसुश्च सर्वशः ॥२१॥
21. lāghavaṁ śabdavedhitvaṁ dṛṣṭvā tatparamaṁ tadā ,
prekṣya taṁ vrīḍitāścāsanpraśaśaṁsuśca sarvaśaḥ.
21. lāghavam śabdavedhitvam dṛṣṭvā tat paramam tadā
prekṣya tam vrīḍitāḥ ca āsan praśaśaṁsuḥ ca sarvaśaḥ
21. Then, having seen that supreme swiftness and the ability to hit targets by sound (śabdavedhitva), and observing the dog, they became ashamed and praised (the archer) in every way.
तं ततोऽन्वेषमाणास्ते वने वननिवासिनम् ।
ददृशुः पाण्डवा राजन्नस्यन्तमनिशं शरान् ॥२२॥
22. taṁ tato'nveṣamāṇāste vane vananivāsinam ,
dadṛśuḥ pāṇḍavā rājannasyantamaniśaṁ śarān.
22. tam tataḥ anveṣamāṇāḥ te vane vananivāsinam
dadṛśuḥ pāṇḍavāḥ rājan asyantam aniśam śarān
22. O King, as the Pāṇḍavas were searching for him in the forest, they saw that forest-dweller ceaselessly shooting arrows.
न चैनमभ्यजानंस्ते तदा विकृतदर्शनम् ।
अथैनं परिपप्रच्छुः को भवान्कस्य वेत्युत ॥२३॥
23. na cainamabhyajānaṁste tadā vikṛtadarśanam ,
athainaṁ paripapracchuḥ ko bhavānkasya vetyuta.
23. na ca enam abhyajānan te tadā vikṛtadarśanam atha
enam paripraprachchuḥ kaḥ bhavān kasya vā iti uta
23. However, they did not recognize him then, as his appearance was altered. So, they asked him, 'Who are you, sir, and whose [son] are you?'
एकलव्य उवाच ।
निषादाधिपतेर्वीरा हिरण्यधनुषः सुतम् ।
द्रोणशिष्यं च मां वित्त धनुर्वेदकृतश्रमम् ॥२४॥
24. ekalavya uvāca ,
niṣādādhipatervīrā hiraṇyadhanuṣaḥ sutam ,
droṇaśiṣyaṁ ca māṁ vitta dhanurvedakṛtaśramam.
24. ekalavyaḥ uvāca niṣādādhipateḥ vīrāḥ hiraṇyadhanuṣaḥ
sutam droṇaśiṣyam ca mām vitta dhanurvedakṛtaśramam
24. Ekalavya replied: 'O heroes, know me as the son of Hiranyadhanus, the chief of the Niṣādas, and as a disciple of Drona who has dedicated himself to the science of archery (dhanurveda).'
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ते तमाज्ञाय तत्त्वेन पुनरागम्य पाण्डवाः ।
यथावृत्तं च ते सर्वं द्रोणायाचख्युरद्भुतम् ॥२५॥
25. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
te tamājñāya tattvena punarāgamya pāṇḍavāḥ ,
yathāvṛttaṁ ca te sarvaṁ droṇāyācakhyuradbhutam.
25. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca te tam ājñāya tattvena punaḥ āgamya
pāṇḍavāḥ yathāvṛttam ca te sarvam droṇāya ācakhyuḥ adbhutam
25. Vaiśampāyana said: 'Having thus truly understood who he was, the Pāṇḍavas returned and narrated the entire amazing incident, just as it had occurred, to Droṇa.'
कौन्तेयस्त्वर्जुनो राजन्नेकलव्यमनुस्मरन् ।
रहो द्रोणं समागम्य प्रणयादिदमब्रवीत् ॥२६॥
26. kaunteyastvarjuno rājannekalavyamanusmaran ,
raho droṇaṁ samāgamya praṇayādidamabravīt.
26. kaunteyaḥ tu arjunaḥ rājan ekalavyam anusmaran
rahaḥ droṇam samāgamya praṇayāt idam abravīt
26. O King, Arjuna, Kunti's son (Kaunteya), remembering Ekalavya, approached Drona in private and, out of affection, spoke these words.
नन्वहं परिरभ्यैकः प्रीतिपूर्वमिदं वचः ।
भवतोक्तो न मे शिष्यस्त्वद्विशिष्टो भविष्यति ॥२७॥
27. nanvahaṁ parirabhyaikaḥ prītipūrvamidaṁ vacaḥ ,
bhavatokto na me śiṣyastvadviśiṣṭo bhaviṣyati.
27. nanu aham parirabhya ekaḥ prītipūrvam idam vacaḥ |
bhavatā uktaḥ na me śiṣyaḥ tvadviśiṣṭaḥ bhaviṣyati
27. Surely, I once lovingly embraced you and spoke these words: 'No student of mine will be superior to you.'
अथ कस्मान्मद्विशिष्टो लोकादपि च वीर्यवान् ।
अस्त्यन्यो भवतः शिष्यो निषादाधिपतेः सुतः ॥२८॥
28. atha kasmānmadviśiṣṭo lokādapi ca vīryavān ,
astyanyo bhavataḥ śiṣyo niṣādādhipateḥ sutaḥ.
28. atha kasmāt matviśiṣṭaḥ lokāt api ca vīryavān |
asti anyaḥ bhavataḥ śiṣyaḥ niṣādādhipateḥ sutaḥ
28. Now, how can it be that there is another student of yours, the son of the lord of the Niṣādas, who is more valiant and superior to me in the world?
मुहूर्तमिव तं द्रोणश्चिन्तयित्वा विनिश्चयम् ।
सव्यसाचिनमादाय नैषादिं प्रति जग्मिवान् ॥२९॥
29. muhūrtamiva taṁ droṇaścintayitvā viniścayam ,
savyasācinamādāya naiṣādiṁ prati jagmivān.
29. muhūrtam iva tam droṇaḥ cintayitvā viniścayam
| savyasācinam ādāya naiṣādim prati jagmivān
29. Having pondered the decision for a moment, Droṇa took Savyasācin (Arjuna) and proceeded towards the Niṣāda's son (Ekalavya).
ददर्श मलदिग्धाङ्गं जटिलं चीरवाससम् ।
एकलव्यं धनुष्पाणिमस्यन्तमनिशं शरान् ॥३०॥
30. dadarśa maladigdhāṅgaṁ jaṭilaṁ cīravāsasam ,
ekalavyaṁ dhanuṣpāṇimasyantamaniśaṁ śarān.
30. dadarśa maladigdhāṅgam jaṭilam cīravāsasam |
ekalavyam dhanuṣpāṇim asyantam aniśam śarān
30. (He, Droṇa) saw Ekalavya, whose body was smeared with dirt, who had matted hair, who wore garments of bark, who held a bow in his hand, and who was incessantly shooting arrows.
एकलव्यस्तु तं दृष्ट्वा द्रोणमायान्तमन्तिकात् ।
अभिगम्योपसंगृह्य जगाम शिरसा महीम् ॥३१॥
31. ekalavyastu taṁ dṛṣṭvā droṇamāyāntamantikāt ,
abhigamyopasaṁgṛhya jagāma śirasā mahīm.
31. ekalavyaḥ tu tam dṛṣṭvā droṇam āyāntam antikāt
| abhigamya upasaṃgṛhya jagāma śirasā mahīm
31. But Ekalavya, having seen Droṇa approaching from nearby, approached him, saluted respectfully, and bowed his head to the ground.
पूजयित्वा ततो द्रोणं विधिवत्स निषादजः ।
निवेद्य शिष्यमात्मानं तस्थौ प्राञ्जलिरग्रतः ॥३२॥
32. pūjayitvā tato droṇaṁ vidhivatsa niṣādajaḥ ,
nivedya śiṣyamātmānaṁ tasthau prāñjaliragrataḥ.
32. pūjayitvā tataḥ droṇam vidhivat saḥ niṣādajaḥ
nivedya śiṣyam ātmānam tasthau prāñjaliḥ agrataḥ
32. Then, Ekalavya, the Niṣāda-born, after properly worshipping Drona and introducing himself as a disciple (ātman), stood before him with folded hands.
ततो द्रोणोऽब्रवीद्राजन्नेकलव्यमिदं वचः ।
यदि शिष्योऽसि मे तूर्णं वेतनं संप्रदीयताम् ॥३३॥
33. tato droṇo'bravīdrājannekalavyamidaṁ vacaḥ ,
yadi śiṣyo'si me tūrṇaṁ vetanaṁ saṁpradīyatām.
33. tataḥ droṇaḥ abravīt rājan ekalavyam idam vacaḥ
yadi śiṣyaḥ asi me tūrṇam vetanam sampradīyatām
33. Then, O King, Drona said this to Ekalavya: 'If you are truly my disciple, then my tuition fee must be given promptly.'
एकलव्यस्तु तच्छ्रुत्वा प्रीयमाणोऽब्रवीदिदम् ।
किं प्रयच्छामि भगवन्नाज्ञापयतु मां गुरुः ॥३४॥
34. ekalavyastu tacchrutvā prīyamāṇo'bravīdidam ,
kiṁ prayacchāmi bhagavannājñāpayatu māṁ guruḥ.
34. ekalavyaḥ tu tat śrutvā prīyamāṇaḥ abravīt idam
kim prayacchāmi bhagavan ājñāpayatu mām guruḥ
34. But Ekalavya, upon hearing that, was delighted and said, 'What shall I offer, O revered one? May my teacher (guru) command me.'
न हि किंचिददेयं मे गुरवे ब्रह्मवित्तम ।
तमब्रवीत्त्वयाङ्गुष्ठो दक्षिणो दीयतां मम ॥३५॥
35. na hi kiṁcidadeyaṁ me gurave brahmavittama ,
tamabravīttvayāṅguṣṭho dakṣiṇo dīyatāṁ mama.
35. na hi kiṃcit adeyam me gurave brahmavittama tam
abravīt tvayā aṅguṣṭhaḥ dakṣiṇaḥ dīyatām mama
35. Ekalavya said, 'Indeed, nothing can be withheld by me from my teacher (guru), O best among the knowers of ultimate reality (brahman).' To him, Drona replied, 'Let your right thumb be given to me.'
एकलव्यस्तु तच्छ्रुत्वा वचो द्रोणस्य दारुणम् ।
प्रतिज्ञामात्मनो रक्षन्सत्ये च निरतः सदा ॥३६॥
36. ekalavyastu tacchrutvā vaco droṇasya dāruṇam ,
pratijñāmātmano rakṣansatye ca nirataḥ sadā.
36. ekalavyaḥ tu tat śrutvā vacaḥ droṇasya dāruṇam
pratijñām ātmanaḥ rakṣan satye ca nirataḥ sadā
36. But Ekalavya, having heard that cruel speech of Drona, protecting his own vow and always devoted to truth...
तथैव हृष्टवदनस्तथैवादीनमानसः ।
छित्त्वाविचार्य तं प्रादाद्द्रोणायाङ्गुष्ठमात्मनः ॥३७॥
37. tathaiva hṛṣṭavadanastathaivādīnamānasaḥ ,
chittvāvicārya taṁ prādāddroṇāyāṅguṣṭhamātmanaḥ.

chittvā avicārya tam prādāt droṇāya aṅguṣṭham ātmanaḥ
37. With a joyful face and an undaunted spirit, having cut it, he gave his own thumb (ātman) to Drona without a second thought.
ततः परं तु नैषादिरङ्गुलीभिर्व्यकर्षत ।
न तथा स तु शीघ्रोऽभूद्यथा पूर्वं नराधिप ॥३८॥
38. tataḥ paraṁ tu naiṣādiraṅgulībhirvyakarṣata ,
na tathā sa tu śīghro'bhūdyathā pūrvaṁ narādhipa.
38. tataḥ param tu naiṣādiḥ aṅgulībhiḥ vyakarṣata na
tathā saḥ tu śīghraḥ abhūt yathā pūrvam narādhipa
38. But after that, the Niṣāda (Ekalavya) used his fingers to draw (the bow). However, O king, he was no longer as swift as he had been before.
ततोऽर्जुनः प्रीतमना बभूव विगतज्वरः ।
द्रोणश्च सत्यवागासीन्नान्योऽभ्यभवदर्जुनम् ॥३९॥
39. tato'rjunaḥ prītamanā babhūva vigatajvaraḥ ,
droṇaśca satyavāgāsīnnānyo'bhyabhavadarjunam.
39. tataḥ arjunaḥ prītamanāḥ babhūva vigatajvaraḥ droṇaḥ
ca satyavāk āsīt na anyaḥ abhyabhavat arjunam
39. Then Arjuna became delighted and relieved of his distress. Drona's word was also proven true, as no one else could surpass Arjuna.
द्रोणस्य तु तदा शिष्यौ गदायोग्यां विशेषतः ।
दुर्योधनश्च भीमश्च कुरूणामभ्यगच्छताम् ॥४०॥
40. droṇasya tu tadā śiṣyau gadāyogyāṁ viśeṣataḥ ,
duryodhanaśca bhīmaśca kurūṇāmabhyagacchatām.

40. At that time, Drona's two disciples, Duryodhana and Bhima, particularly among the Kurus, attained proficiency in mace-fighting (gadāyogyām).
अश्वत्थामा रहस्येषु सर्वेष्वभ्यधिकोऽभवत् ।
तथाति पुरुषानन्यान्त्सारुकौ यमजावुभौ ।
युधिष्ठिरो रथश्रेष्ठः सर्वत्र तु धनंजयः ॥४१॥
41. aśvatthāmā rahasyeṣu sarveṣvabhyadhiko'bhavat ,
tathāti puruṣānanyāntsārukau yamajāvubhau ,
yudhiṣṭhiro rathaśreṣṭhaḥ sarvatra tu dhanaṁjayaḥ.

41. Ashwatthama was superior in all confidential matters. Likewise, both twins (Nakula and Sahadeva), masters of "sāru" (a specific combat skill), surpassed other men. Yudhishthira was the foremost charioteer, but Dhananjaya (Arjuna) was supreme in every aspect.
प्रथितः सागरान्तायां रथयूथपयूथपः ।
बुद्धियोगबलोत्साहैः सर्वास्त्रेषु च पाण्डवः ॥४२॥
42. prathitaḥ sāgarāntāyāṁ rathayūthapayūthapaḥ ,
buddhiyogabalotsāhaiḥ sarvāstreṣu ca pāṇḍavaḥ.

42. The Pāṇḍava (Arjuna) was renowned across the ocean-bounded earth as the foremost among chariot warriors. He excelled in all weapons due to his intelligence, focused application (yoga), strength, and enthusiasm.
अस्त्रे गुर्वनुरागे च विशिष्टोऽभवदर्जुनः ।
तुल्येष्वस्त्रोपदेशेषु सौष्ठवेन च वीर्यवान् ।
एकः सर्वकुमाराणां बभूवातिरथोऽर्जुनः ॥४३॥
43. astre gurvanurāge ca viśiṣṭo'bhavadarjunaḥ ,
tulyeṣvastropadeśeṣu sauṣṭhavena ca vīryavān ,
ekaḥ sarvakumārāṇāṁ babhūvātiratho'rjunaḥ.

43. Arjuna became exceptionally proficient in weaponry and in his devotion to his teacher (guru). Though the instructions in weapon-craft were the same for all, he was mighty through his superior skill. Arjuna alone among all the princes became an exceptional chariot warrior (atiratha).
प्राणाधिकं भीमसेनं कृतविद्यं धनंजयम् ।
धार्तराष्ट्रा दुरात्मानो नामृष्यन्त नराधिप ॥४४॥
44. prāṇādhikaṁ bhīmasenaṁ kṛtavidyaṁ dhanaṁjayam ,
dhārtarāṣṭrā durātmāno nāmṛṣyanta narādhipa.

44. O King, the wicked-minded (ātman) sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra could not tolerate Bhīmasena, who was dearer than life to others, nor Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), who was accomplished in learning and skill.
तांस्तु सर्वान्समानीय सर्वविद्यासु निष्ठितान् ।
द्रोणः प्रहरणज्ञाने जिज्ञासुः पुरुषर्षभ ॥४५॥
45. tāṁstu sarvānsamānīya sarvavidyāsu niṣṭhitān ,
droṇaḥ praharaṇajñāne jijñāsuḥ puruṣarṣabha.

45. O best of men (puruṣa), Droṇa, wishing to assess their skill in weaponry, gathered all those princes who were proficient in all branches of learning.
कृत्रिमं भासमारोप्य वृक्षाग्रे शिल्पिभिः कृतम् ।
अविज्ञातं कुमाराणां लक्ष्यभूतमुपादिशत् ॥४६॥
46. kṛtrimaṁ bhāsamāropya vṛkṣāgre śilpibhiḥ kṛtam ,
avijñātaṁ kumārāṇāṁ lakṣyabhūtamupādiśat.

46. He instructed them, pointing out an artificial falcon, crafted by artisans and placed on the treetop, which was made into a target and remained unknown to the princes.
द्रोण उवाच ।
शीघ्रं भवन्तः सर्वे वै धनूंष्यादाय सत्वराः ।
भासमेतं समुद्दिश्य तिष्ठन्तां संहितेषवः ॥४७॥
47. droṇa uvāca ,
śīghraṁ bhavantaḥ sarve vai dhanūṁṣyādāya satvarāḥ ,
bhāsametaṁ samuddiśya tiṣṭhantāṁ saṁhiteṣavaḥ.

47. Droṇa said: All of you, quickly and swiftly, take up your bows. Aim at this hawk and stand ready with your arrows nocked.
मद्वाक्यसमकालं च शिरोऽस्य विनिपात्यताम् ।
एकैकशो नियोक्ष्यामि तथा कुरुत पुत्रकाः ॥४८॥
48. madvākyasamakālaṁ ca śiro'sya vinipātyatām ,
ekaikaśo niyokṣyāmi tathā kuruta putrakāḥ.
48. mat-vākya-samakālaṃ ca śiraḥ asya vinipātyatām
| ekaikaśaḥ niyokṣyāmi tathā kuruta putrakāḥ
48. And as soon as I give the word, its head must be struck down. I will instruct each of you individually; my sons, do as I say.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततो युधिष्ठिरं पूर्वमुवाचाङ्गिरसां वरः ।
संधत्स्व बाणं दुर्धर्ष मद्वाक्यान्ते विमुञ्च च ॥४९॥
49. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato yudhiṣṭhiraṁ pūrvamuvācāṅgirasāṁ varaḥ ,
saṁdhatsva bāṇaṁ durdharṣa madvākyānte vimuñca ca.

49. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, the foremost of the Aṅgirasa lineage (Droṇa) first spoke to Yudhiṣṭhira: "O formidable one, nock your arrow, and release it precisely at the conclusion of my command."
ततो युधिष्ठिरः पूर्वं धनुर्गृह्य महारवम् ।
तस्थौ भासं समुद्दिश्य गुरुवाक्यप्रचोदितः ॥५०॥
50. tato yudhiṣṭhiraḥ pūrvaṁ dhanurgṛhya mahāravam ,
tasthau bhāsaṁ samuddiśya guruvākyapracoditaḥ.
50. tataḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ pūrvam dhanuḥ gṛhya mahā-ravam
| tasthau bhāsam samudiśya guru-vākya-pracoditaḥ
50. Then Yudhiṣṭhira first took up the mighty-sounding bow. He stood aiming at the hawk, prompted by his guru's words.
ततो विततधन्वानं द्रोणस्तं कुरुनन्दनम् ।
स मुहूर्तादुवाचेदं वचनं भरतर्षभ ॥५१॥
51. tato vitatadhanvānaṁ droṇastaṁ kurunandanam ,
sa muhūrtāduvācedaṁ vacanaṁ bharatarṣabha.
51. tataḥ vitata-dhanvānam droṇaḥ tam kuru-nandanam
| saḥ muhūrtāt uvāca idam vacanam bharatarṣabha
51. Then Droṇa spoke these words to that Kuru prince, whose bow was drawn, after a short while, "O best of the Bhāratas."
पश्यस्येनं द्रुमाग्रस्थं भासं नरवरात्मज ।
पश्यामीत्येवमाचार्यं प्रत्युवाच युधिष्ठिरः ॥५२॥
52. paśyasyenaṁ drumāgrasthaṁ bhāsaṁ naravarātmaja ,
paśyāmītyevamācāryaṁ pratyuvāca yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
52. paśyasi enam drumāgrastham bhāsam naravarātmaja |
paśyāmi iti evam ācāryam pratyuvāca yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
52. “Do you see this bird (bhāsa) perched on the treetop, O son of the best of men?” “I see it!” - thus Yudhishthira replied to the teacher.
स मुहूर्तादिव पुनर्द्रोणस्तं प्रत्यभाषत ।
अथ वृक्षमिमं मां वा भ्रातॄन्वापि प्रपश्यसि ॥५३॥
53. sa muhūrtādiva punardroṇastaṁ pratyabhāṣata ,
atha vṛkṣamimaṁ māṁ vā bhrātṝnvāpi prapaśyasi.
53. sa muhūrtāt iva punaḥ droṇaḥ tam pratyabhāṣata |
atha vṛkṣam imam mām vā bhrātṝn vā api prapaśyasi
53. Then, after about a moment, Drona spoke to him again: “Now, do you also see this tree, or me, or your brothers?”
तमुवाच स कौन्तेयः पश्याम्येनं वनस्पतिम् ।
भवन्तं च तथा भ्रातॄन्भासं चेति पुनः पुनः ॥५४॥
54. tamuvāca sa kaunteyaḥ paśyāmyenaṁ vanaspatim ,
bhavantaṁ ca tathā bhrātṝnbhāsaṁ ceti punaḥ punaḥ.
54. tam uvāca sa kaunteyaḥ paśyāmi enam vanaspatim |
bhavantam ca tathā bhrātṝn bhāsam ca iti punaḥ punaḥ
54. That son of Kunti (Kaunteya) replied to him, “I see this tree, and you, and my brothers, and the bird (bhāsa)” - repeatedly.
तमुवाचापसर्पेति द्रोणोऽप्रीतमना इव ।
नैतच्छक्यं त्वया वेद्धुं लक्ष्यमित्येव कुत्सयन् ॥५५॥
55. tamuvācāpasarpeti droṇo'prītamanā iva ,
naitacchakyaṁ tvayā veddhuṁ lakṣyamityeva kutsayan.
55. tam uvāca apasarpa iti droṇaḥ aprītamanāḥ iva | na
etat śakyam tvayā veddhum lakṣyam iti eva kutsayan
55. Drona, displeased as it were, said to him, “Go away!” and, “This target cannot be pierced by you,” thus reproaching him.
ततो दुर्योधनादींस्तान्धार्तराष्ट्रान्महायशाः ।
तेनैव क्रमयोगेन जिज्ञासुः पर्यपृच्छत ॥५६॥
56. tato duryodhanādīṁstāndhārtarāṣṭrānmahāyaśāḥ ,
tenaiva kramayogena jijñāsuḥ paryapṛcchata.
56. tataḥ duryodhanādīn tān dhārtarāṣṭrān mahāyaśāḥ
| tena eva kramayogena jijñāsuḥ paryapṛcchata
56. Then, the highly renowned one (Drona), wishing to know, questioned those sons of Dhritarashtra, Duryodhana and others, in the very same sequential manner.
अन्यांश्च शिष्यान्भीमादीन्राज्ञश्चैवान्यदेशजान् ।
तथा च सर्वे सर्वं तत्पश्याम इति कुत्सिताः ॥५७॥
57. anyāṁśca śiṣyānbhīmādīnrājñaścaivānyadeśajān ,
tathā ca sarve sarvaṁ tatpaśyāma iti kutsitāḥ.
57. anyān ca śiṣyān bhīmādīn rājñaḥ ca eva anyadeśajān
tathā ca sarve sarvam tat paśyāma iti kutsitāḥ
57. And other disciples, such as Bhima, along with kings from other lands, all exclaimed, "We see all of that!" and were subsequently censured.
ततो धनंजयं द्रोणः स्मयमानोऽभ्यभाषत ।
त्वयेदानीं प्रहर्तव्यमेतल्लक्ष्यं निशम्यताम् ॥५८॥
58. tato dhanaṁjayaṁ droṇaḥ smayamāno'bhyabhāṣata ,
tvayedānīṁ prahartavyametallakṣyaṁ niśamyatām.
58. tataḥ dhanañjayam droṇaḥ smayamānaḥ abhyabhāṣata
tvayā idānīm prahartavyam etat lakṣyam niśamyatām
58. Then Drona, smiling, addressed Arjuna (Dhanañjaya): "Now you must strike this target; observe it carefully."
मद्वाक्यसमकालं ते मोक्तव्योऽत्र भवेच्छरः ।
वितत्य कार्मुकं पुत्र तिष्ठ तावन्मुहूर्तकम् ॥५९॥
59. madvākyasamakālaṁ te moktavyo'tra bhaveccharaḥ ,
vitatya kārmukaṁ putra tiṣṭha tāvanmuhūrtakam.
59. madvākya samakālam te moktavyaḥ atra bhavet śaraḥ
vitatya kārmukam putra tiṣṭha tāvat muhūrtakam
59. An arrow should be released by you here precisely at the same time as my command. Having strung your bow, my son, wait for a moment.
एवमुक्तः सव्यसाची मण्डलीकृतकार्मुकः ।
तस्थौ लक्ष्यं समुद्दिश्य गुरुवाक्यप्रचोदितः ॥६०॥
60. evamuktaḥ savyasācī maṇḍalīkṛtakārmukaḥ ,
tasthau lakṣyaṁ samuddiśya guruvākyapracoditaḥ.
60. evam uktaḥ savyasācī maṇḍalīkṛtakārmukaḥ
tasthau lakṣyam samuddiśya guruvākyapracoditaḥ
60. Thus addressed, Arjuna (Savyasācī), with his bow drawn into a circular shape, stood aiming at the target, motivated by his teacher's words.
मुहूर्तादिव तं द्रोणस्तथैव समभाषत ।
पश्यस्येनं स्थितं भासं द्रुमं मामपि वेत्युत ॥६१॥
61. muhūrtādiva taṁ droṇastathaiva samabhāṣata ,
paśyasyenaṁ sthitaṁ bhāsaṁ drumaṁ māmapi vetyuta.
61. muhūrtāt iva tam droṇaḥ tathā eva samabhāṣata
paśyasi enam sthitam bhāsam drumam mām api vetti uta
61. After a moment, Drona spoke to him again in the same manner: "Do you see this stationary bird, the tree, and even me?"
पश्याम्येनं भासमिति द्रोणं पार्थोऽभ्यभाषत ।
न तु वृक्षं भवन्तं वा पश्यामीति च भारत ॥६२॥
62. paśyāmyenaṁ bhāsamiti droṇaṁ pārtho'bhyabhāṣata ,
na tu vṛkṣaṁ bhavantaṁ vā paśyāmīti ca bhārata.
62. paśyāmi enam bhāsam iti droṇam pārthaḥ abhyabhāṣata
na tu vṛkṣam bhavantam vā paśyāmi iti ca bhārata
62. Arjuna (Pārtha) addressed Drona, saying, "I see this hawk, but I do not see the tree or you, O Bhārata."
ततः प्रीतमना द्रोणो मुहूर्तादिव तं पुनः ।
प्रत्यभाषत दुर्धर्षः पाण्डवानां रथर्षभम् ॥६३॥
63. tataḥ prītamanā droṇo muhūrtādiva taṁ punaḥ ,
pratyabhāṣata durdharṣaḥ pāṇḍavānāṁ ratharṣabham.
63. tataḥ prītamanāḥ droṇaḥ muhūrtāt iva tam punaḥ
prati abhāṣata durdharṣaḥ pāṇḍavānām ratharṣabham
63. Then Drona, with a pleased mind, immediately (after a moment) spoke again to him - that formidable chief of charioteers among the Pāṇḍavas.
भासं पश्यसि यद्येनं तथा ब्रूहि पुनर्वचः ।
शिरः पश्यामि भासस्य न गात्रमिति सोऽब्रवीत् ॥६४॥
64. bhāsaṁ paśyasi yadyenaṁ tathā brūhi punarvacaḥ ,
śiraḥ paśyāmi bhāsasya na gātramiti so'bravīt.
64. bhāsam paśyasi yadi enam tathā brūhi punar vacaḥ
śiraḥ paśyāmi bhāsasya na gātram iti saḥ abravīt
64. Drona said, "If you truly see this hawk, then speak that word again." Arjuna replied, "I see the hawk's head, not its body."
अर्जुनेनैवमुक्तस्तु द्रोणो हृष्टतनूरुहः ।
मुञ्चस्वेत्यब्रवीत्पार्थं स मुमोचाविचारयन् ॥६५॥
65. arjunenaivamuktastu droṇo hṛṣṭatanūruhaḥ ,
muñcasvetyabravītpārthaṁ sa mumocāvicārayan.
65. arjunena eva uktaḥ tu droṇaḥ hṛṣṭatanūruhaḥ
muñcasva iti abravīt pārtham saḥ mumoca avicārayan
65. When Arjuna had spoken thus, Drona, with his hair standing on end (from joy), told Arjuna (Pārtha), "Release it!" And he released it without a moment's thought.
ततस्तस्य नगस्थस्य क्षुरेण निशितेन ह ।
शिर उत्कृत्य तरसा पातयामास पाण्डवः ॥६६॥
66. tatastasya nagasthasya kṣureṇa niśitena ha ,
śira utkṛtya tarasā pātayāmāsa pāṇḍavaḥ.
66. tataḥ tasya nagasthasya kṣureṇa niśitena ha
śiraḥ ut kṛtya tarasā pātayām āsa pāṇḍavaḥ
66. Then the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna), using a sharpened arrow, swiftly cut off the head of that hawk perched on the tree, and caused it to fall.
तस्मिन्कर्मणि संसिद्धे पर्यश्वजत फल्गुनम् ।
मेने च द्रुपदं संख्ये सानुबन्धं पराजितम् ॥६७॥
67. tasminkarmaṇi saṁsiddhe paryaśvajata phalgunam ,
mene ca drupadaṁ saṁkhye sānubandhaṁ parājitam.
67. tasmin karmaṇi saṃsiddhe paryāśvajata phalgunaṃ
mene ca drupadaṃ saṃkhye sānubandhaṃ parājitam
67. Upon the successful completion of that deed (karma), he embraced Arjuna. He also considered Drupada, along with his relatives, to be defeated in battle.
कस्यचित्त्वथ कालस्य सशिष्योऽङ्गिरसां वरः ।
जगाम गङ्गामभितो मज्जितुं भरतर्षभ ॥६८॥
68. kasyacittvatha kālasya saśiṣyo'ṅgirasāṁ varaḥ ,
jagāma gaṅgāmabhito majjituṁ bharatarṣabha.
68. kasyacit tu atha kālasya saśiṣyaḥ aṅgirasām varaḥ
jagāma gaṅgām abhitaḥ majjitum bharatarṣabha
68. O best of the Bharatas, after some time, the foremost among the Angiras (sages), accompanied by his disciples, went to the Gaṅgā river to bathe.
अवगाढमथो द्रोणं सलिले सलिलेचरः ।
ग्राहो जग्राह बलवाञ्जङ्घान्ते कालचोदितः ॥६९॥
69. avagāḍhamatho droṇaṁ salile salilecaraḥ ,
grāho jagrāha balavāñjaṅghānte kālacoditaḥ.

69. Then, as Drona was immersed in the water, a powerful crocodile, an aquatic creature, seized him by the thigh, being impelled by fate (kāla).
स समर्थोऽपि मोक्षाय शिष्यान्सर्वानचोदयत् ।
ग्राहं हत्वा मोक्षयध्वं मामिति त्वरयन्निव ॥७०॥
70. sa samartho'pi mokṣāya śiṣyānsarvānacodayat ,
grāhaṁ hatvā mokṣayadhvaṁ māmiti tvarayanniva.
70. sa samarthaḥ api mokṣāya śiṣyān sarvān acodayat
grāhaṃ hatvā mokṣayadhvaṃ mām iti tvarayan iva
70. Though he was himself capable of achieving liberation (mokṣa), he urged all his disciples, as if to hurry them, saying, 'Kill this crocodile and free me!'
तद्वाक्यसमकालं तु बीभत्सुर्निशितैः शरैः ।
आवापैः पञ्चभिर्ग्राहं मग्नमम्भस्यताडयत् ।
इतरे तु विसंमूढास्तत्र तत्र प्रपेदिरे ॥७१॥
71. tadvākyasamakālaṁ tu bībhatsurniśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
āvāpaiḥ pañcabhirgrāhaṁ magnamambhasyatāḍayat ,
itare tu visaṁmūḍhāstatra tatra prapedire.
71. tat vākyasamakālam tu bībhatsuḥ
niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ āvāpaiḥ pañcabhiḥ
grāhaṃ magnam ambhasi atāḍayat itare
tu visaṃmūḍhāḥ tatra tatra prapedire
71. At the very moment of his command, Arjuna (Bībhatsu) struck the crocodile, which was submerged in the water, with five sharp arrows. But the other disciples, completely bewildered, scattered in various directions.
तं च दृष्ट्वा क्रियोपेतं द्रोणोऽमन्यत पाण्डवम् ।
विशिष्टं सर्वशिष्येभ्यः प्रीतिमांश्चाभवत्तदा ॥७२॥
72. taṁ ca dṛṣṭvā kriyopetaṁ droṇo'manyata pāṇḍavam ,
viśiṣṭaṁ sarvaśiṣyebhyaḥ prītimāṁścābhavattadā.
72. tam ca dṛṣṭvā kriyopetam droṇaḥ amanyata pāṇḍavam
viśiṣṭam sarvaśiṣyebhyaḥ prītimān ca abhavat tadā
72. Upon seeing him perform with such skill, Drona considered that Pandava (Arjuna) was superior to all his other disciples, and at that moment, he became greatly pleased.
स पार्थबाणैर्बहुधा खण्डशः परिकल्पितः ।
ग्राहः पञ्चत्वमापेदे जङ्घां त्यक्त्वा महात्मनः ॥७३॥
73. sa pārthabāṇairbahudhā khaṇḍaśaḥ parikalpitaḥ ,
grāhaḥ pañcatvamāpede jaṅghāṁ tyaktvā mahātmanaḥ.
73. saḥ pārthabāṇaiḥ bahudhā khaṇḍaśaḥ parikalpitaḥ
grāhaḥ pañcatvam āpede jaṅghām tyaktvā mahātmanaḥ
73. That crocodile, which had been cut into many pieces by Arjuna's arrows, released the great-souled (mahātman) Arjuna's thigh and then met its death (pañcatvam).
अथाब्रवीन्महात्मानं भारद्वाजो महारथम् ।
गृहाणेदं महाबाहो विशिष्टमतिदुर्धरम् ।
अस्त्रं ब्रह्मशिरो नाम सप्रयोगनिवर्तनम् ॥७४॥
74. athābravīnmahātmānaṁ bhāradvājo mahāratham ,
gṛhāṇedaṁ mahābāho viśiṣṭamatidurdharam ,
astraṁ brahmaśiro nāma saprayoganivartanam.
74. atha abravīt mahātmānam bhāradvājaḥ
mahāratham gṛhāṇa idam mahābāho
viśiṣṭam atidurgharam astram
brahmaśiraḥ nāma saprayoganivartanam
74. Then Drona, the great warrior, addressed the great-souled (mahātman) Arjuna, saying: "O mighty-armed one, accept this exceptional and exceedingly powerful weapon (astram) called Brahmasiras, which includes both its method of deployment and its withdrawal."
न च ते मानुषेष्वेतत्प्रयोक्तव्यं कथंचन ।
जगद्विनिर्दहेदेतदल्पतेजसि पातितम् ॥७५॥
75. na ca te mānuṣeṣvetatprayoktavyaṁ kathaṁcana ,
jagadvinirdahedetadalpatejasi pātitam.
75. na ca te mānuṣeṣu etat prayoktavyam kathaṃcana
jagat vinirdahet etat alpatejasi pātitam
75. This (astram) should never be used by you against human beings, for if it were to be cast upon someone of little spiritual energy (tejas), it would completely burn up the world.
असामान्यमिदं तात लोकेष्वस्त्रं निगद्यते ।
तद्धारयेथाः प्रयतः शृणु चेदं वचो मम ॥७६॥
76. asāmānyamidaṁ tāta lokeṣvastraṁ nigadyate ,
taddhārayethāḥ prayataḥ śṛṇu cedaṁ vaco mama.
76. asamānyam idam tāta lokeṣu astram nigadyate tat
dhārayethāḥ prayataḥ śṛṇu ca idam vacaḥ mama
76. My dear son, this weapon (astram) is declared to be unparalleled among all the worlds. Therefore, you should wield it with great restraint, and listen to this instruction of mine.
बाधेतामानुषः शत्रुर्यदा त्वां वीर कश्चन ।
तद्वधाय प्रयुञ्जीथास्तदास्त्रमिदमाहवे ॥७७॥
77. bādhetāmānuṣaḥ śatruryadā tvāṁ vīra kaścana ,
tadvadhāya prayuñjīthāstadāstramidamāhave.
77. bādheta amānuṣaḥ śatruḥ yadā tvām vīra kaścana
tat-vadhāya prayuñjīthāḥ tadā astram idam āhave
77. O hero, whenever any non-human enemy attacks you, you should then use this weapon in battle for its destruction.
तथेति तत्प्रतिश्रुत्य बीभत्सुः स कृताञ्जलिः ।
जग्राह परमास्त्रं तदाह चैनं पुनर्गुरुः ।
भविता त्वत्समो नान्यः पुमाँल्लोके धनुर्धरः ॥७८॥
78. tatheti tatpratiśrutya bībhatsuḥ sa kṛtāñjaliḥ ,
jagrāha paramāstraṁ tadāha cainaṁ punarguruḥ ,
bhavitā tvatsamo nānyaḥ pumāँlloke dhanurdharaḥ.
78. tathā iti tat pratiśrutya bībhatsuḥ saḥ
kṛtāñjaliḥ jagrāha parama-astram tadā
āha ca enam punaḥ guruḥ bhavitā
tvat-samaḥ na anyaḥ pumān loke dhanurdharaḥ
78. Saying 'So be it,' Arjuna (Bībhatsu), with folded hands, accepted that supreme weapon. Then his preceptor (guru) again said to him, 'No other man (puruṣa) in the world will be your equal as an archer.'
