नारद उवाच ।
सुखदुःखविपर्यासो यदा समुपपद्यते ।
नैनं प्रज्ञा सुनीतं वा त्रायते नापि पौरुषम् ॥१॥

1. nārada uvāca ,
sukhaduḥkhaviparyāso yadā samupapadyate ,

Nārada said: When the vicissitudes of happiness and sorrow occur, neither wisdom, nor good policy, nor even human effort can protect a person.
स्वभावाद्यत्नमातिष्ठेद्यत्नवान्नावसीदति ।
जरामरणरोगेभ्यः प्रियमात्मानमुद्धरेत् ॥२॥

2. svabhāvādyatnamātiṣṭhedyatnavānnāvasīdati ,
jarāmaraṇarogebhyaḥ priyamātmānamuddharet.

svabhāvāt yatnam ātiṣṭhet yatnavān na avasīdati

One should undertake effort according to one's intrinsic nature; a diligent person never despairs. One should rescue one's dear self (ātman) from old age, death, and diseases.
रुजन्ति हि शरीराणि रोगाः शारीरमानसाः ।
सायका इव तीक्ष्णाग्राः प्रयुक्ता दृढधन्विभिः ॥३॥

3. rujanti hi śarīrāṇi rogāḥ śārīramānasāḥ ,

rujanti hi śarīrāṇi rogāḥ śārīramānasāḥ sāyakāḥ

rogāḥ śārīramānasāḥ hi śarīrāṇi rujanti
dṛḍhadhanvibhīḥ prayuktāḥ tīkṣṇāgrāḥ sāyakāḥ iva
dṛḍhadhanvibhīḥ prayuktāḥ tīkṣṇāgrāḥ sāyakāḥ iva

Physical and mental diseases indeed torment bodies, just like sharp-pointed arrows shot by strong archers.
व्याधितस्य विवित्साभिस्त्रस्यतो जीवितैषिणः ।
अवशस्य विनाशाय शरीरमपकृष्यते ॥४॥

4. vyādhitasya vivitsābhistrasyato jīvitaiṣiṇaḥ ,
avaśasya vināśāya śarīramapakṛṣyate.

The body of the sick, fearful, and helpless person, even though longing for life, is ultimately dragged towards its destruction by these very life-seeking urges.
स्रवन्ति न निवर्तन्ते स्रोतांसि सरितामिव ।
आयुरादाय मर्त्यानां रात्र्यहानि पुनः पुनः ॥५॥

5. sravanti na nivartante srotāṁsi saritāmiva ,
āyurādāya martyānāṁ rātryahāni punaḥ punaḥ.

Like river currents that flow forth and do not return, nights and days repeatedly carry away the life (āyuḥ) of mortals.
व्यत्ययो ह्ययमत्यन्तं पक्षयोः शुक्लकृष्णयोः ।
जातं मर्त्यं जरयति निमेषं नावतिष्ठते ॥६॥

6. vyatyayo hyayamatyantaṁ pakṣayoḥ śuklakṛṣṇayoḥ ,
jātaṁ martyaṁ jarayati nimeṣaṁ nāvatiṣṭhate.

vyatyayaḥ hi ayam atyantam pakṣayoḥ śuklakṛṣṇayoḥ

This constant alternation of the bright and dark fortnights (pakṣa) certainly causes a born mortal to age; it does not stand still for even a moment.
सुखदुःखानि भूतानामजरो जरयन्नसौ ।
आदित्यो ह्यस्तमभ्येति पुनः पुनरुदेति च ॥७॥

7. sukhaduḥkhāni bhūtānāmajaro jarayannasau ,
ādityo hyastamabhyeti punaḥ punarudeti ca.

That ageless sun, which wears out the joys and sorrows of beings, indeed goes to its setting and rises again and again.
अदृष्टपूर्वानादाय भावानपरिशङ्कितान् ।
इष्टानिष्टान्मनुष्याणामस्तं गच्छन्ति रात्रयः ॥८॥
इष्टानिष्टान्मनुष्याणामस्तं गच्छन्ति रात्रयः ॥८॥
8. adṛṣṭapūrvānādāya bhāvānapariśaṅkitān ,
iṣṭāniṣṭānmanuṣyāṇāmastaṁ gacchanti rātrayaḥ.
iṣṭāniṣṭānmanuṣyāṇāmastaṁ gacchanti rātrayaḥ.

adṛṣṭapūrvān ādāya bhāvān apariśaṅkitān
iṣṭāniṣṭān manuṣyāṇām astam gacchanti rātrayaḥ
iṣṭāniṣṭān manuṣyāṇām astam gacchanti rātrayaḥ

rātrayaḥ adṛṣṭapūrvān apariśaṅkitān iṣṭāniṣṭān
bhāvān manuṣyāṇām ādāya astam gacchanti

The nights pass, bringing to humans both desired and undesired circumstances, which were previously unseen and unsuspected.
यो यमिच्छेद्यथाकामं कामानां तत्तदाप्नुयात् ।
यदि स्यान्न पराधीनं पुरुषस्य क्रियाफलम् ॥९॥
यदि स्यान्न पराधीनं पुरुषस्य क्रियाफलम् ॥९॥
9. yo yamicchedyathākāmaṁ kāmānāṁ tattadāpnuyāt ,
yadi syānna parādhīnaṁ puruṣasya kriyāphalam.

yaḥ yam icchet yathākāmam kāmānām tat tat āpnuyāt
yadi syāt na parādhīnam puruṣasya kriyāphalam

yaḥ yam yathākāmam icchet,
kāmānām tat tat āpnuyāt; yadi puruṣasya kriyāphalam parādhīnam na syāt

Whoever desires something according to their wish would obtain it, if the fruit of an individual's (puruṣa) action (karma) were not dependent on others.
संयताश्च हि दक्षाश्च मतिमन्तश्च मानवाः ।
दृश्यन्ते निष्फलाः सन्तः प्रहीणाश्च स्वकर्मभिः ॥१०॥
दृश्यन्ते निष्फलाः सन्तः प्रहीणाश्च स्वकर्मभिः ॥१०॥
10. saṁyatāśca hi dakṣāśca matimantaśca mānavāḥ ,
dṛśyante niṣphalāḥ santaḥ prahīṇāśca svakarmabhiḥ.
dṛśyante niṣphalāḥ santaḥ prahīṇāśca svakarmabhiḥ.

saṃyatāḥ ca hi dakṣāḥ ca matimantaḥ ca mānavāḥ
dṛśyante niṣphalāḥ santaḥ prahīṇāḥ ca svakarmabhiḥ
dṛśyante niṣphalāḥ santaḥ prahīṇāḥ ca svakarmabhiḥ

hi saṃyatāḥ ca dakṣāḥ ca matimantaḥ ca mānavāḥ
santaḥ niṣphalāḥ ca prahīṇāḥ svakarmabhiḥ dṛśyante
santaḥ niṣphalāḥ ca prahīṇāḥ svakarmabhiḥ dṛśyante
10.
Indeed, even humans who are self-controlled, diligent, and intelligent are seen to be unsuccessful and deprived by their own actions (karma).
अपरे बालिशाः सन्तो निर्गुणाः पुरुषाधमाः ।
आशीर्भिरप्यसंयुक्ता दृश्यन्ते सर्वकामिनः ॥११॥

11. apare bāliśāḥ santo nirguṇāḥ puruṣādhamāḥ ,
āśīrbhirapyasaṁyuktā dṛśyante sarvakāminaḥ.
āśīrbhirapyasaṁyuktā dṛśyante sarvakāminaḥ.

apare bāliśāḥ santaḥ nirguṇāḥ puruṣādhamāḥ
āśīrbhiḥ api asaṃyuktāḥ dṛśyante sarvakāminaḥ
āśīrbhiḥ api asaṃyuktāḥ dṛśyante sarvakāminaḥ

apare bāliśāḥ santaḥ nirguṇāḥ puruṣādhamāḥ
api āśīrbhiḥ asaṃyuktāḥ sarvakāminaḥ dṛśyante

11.
Others, who are foolish, devoid of good qualities, and considered the lowest among men, are seen to desire all things, even though they are not endowed with any blessings.
भूतानामपरः कश्चिद्धिंसायां सततोत्थितः ।
वञ्चनायां च लोकस्य स सुखेष्वेव जीर्यते ॥१२॥

12. bhūtānāmaparaḥ kaściddhiṁsāyāṁ satatotthitaḥ ,
vañcanāyāṁ ca lokasya sa sukheṣveva jīryate.

bhūtānām aparaḥ kaścit hiṃsāyām satatotthitaḥ
vañcanāyām ca lokasya sa sukheṣu eva jīryate

Another person among living beings, constantly prone to violence and the deception of people, ultimately wastes away solely in pleasures.
अचेष्टमानमासीनं श्रीः कंचिदुपतिष्ठति ।
कश्चित्कर्मानुसृत्यान्यो न प्राप्यमधिगच्छति ॥१३॥
कश्चित्कर्मानुसृत्यान्यो न प्राप्यमधिगच्छति ॥१३॥
13. aceṣṭamānamāsīnaṁ śrīḥ kaṁcidupatiṣṭhati ,
kaścitkarmānusṛtyānyo na prāpyamadhigacchati.

aceṣṭamānam āsīnam śrīḥ kañcit upatiṣṭhati kaścit
karmānusṛtya anyaḥ na prāpyam adhigacchati

śrīḥ kañcit aceṣṭamānam āsīnam upatiṣṭhati kaścit
anyaḥ karmānusṛtya prāpyam na adhigacchati

Prosperity approaches certain individuals who are inactive and merely seated. Meanwhile, another person, diligently following their action (karma), does not attain what is to be achieved.
अपराधं समाचक्ष्व पुरुषस्य स्वभावतः ।
शुक्रमन्यत्र संभूतं पुनरन्यत्र गच्छति ॥१४॥

14. aparādhaṁ samācakṣva puruṣasya svabhāvataḥ ,
śukramanyatra saṁbhūtaṁ punaranyatra gacchati.

Explain a person's offense by considering their intrinsic nature (svabhāva). Just as semen, having originated in one place, moves to another.
तस्य योनौ प्रसक्तस्य गर्भो भवति वा न वा ।
आम्रपुष्पोपमा यस्य निवृत्तिरुपलभ्यते ॥१५॥
आम्रपुष्पोपमा यस्य निवृत्तिरुपलभ्यते ॥१५॥
15. tasya yonau prasaktasya garbho bhavati vā na vā ,
āmrapuṣpopamā yasya nivṛttirupalabhyate.

For one who is attached to the generative process, whether an embryo develops or not, its disappearance is observed, like that of a mango blossom.
केषांचित्पुत्रकामानामनुसंतानमिच्छताम् ।
सिद्धौ प्रयतमानानां नैवाण्डमुपजायते ॥१६॥
सिद्धौ प्रयतमानानां नैवाण्डमुपजायते ॥१६॥
16. keṣāṁcitputrakāmānāmanusaṁtānamicchatām ,
siddhau prayatamānānāṁ naivāṇḍamupajāyate.

keṣāṃcit putrakāmānām anusaṃtānam icchatām
siddhau prayatamānānām na eva aṇḍam upajāyate

For some who desire sons and wish for the continuation of their progeny, even while striving for success, an embryo certainly does not come into being.
गर्भाच्चोद्विजमानानां क्रुद्धादाशीविषादिव ।
आयुष्माञ्जायते पुत्रः कथं प्रेतः पितैव सः ॥१७॥
आयुष्माञ्जायते पुत्रः कथं प्रेतः पितैव सः ॥१७॥
17. garbhāccodvijamānānāṁ kruddhādāśīviṣādiva ,
āyuṣmāñjāyate putraḥ kathaṁ pretaḥ pitaiva saḥ.
āyuṣmāñjāyate putraḥ kathaṁ pretaḥ pitaiva saḥ.

garbhāt ca udvijamānānām kruddhāt āśīviṣāt iva
āyuṣmān jāyate putraḥ katham pretaḥ pitā eva saḥ
āyuṣmān jāyate putraḥ katham pretaḥ pitā eva saḥ

ca garbhāt udvijamānānām kruddhāt āśīviṣāt iva putraḥ āyuṣmān jāyate,
katham saḥ pitā eva pretaḥ
katham saḥ pitā eva pretaḥ
17.
And for those who are frightened by the fetus as if by an angry venomous snake, how can a long-lived son be born who is indeed the departed father (preta)?
देवानिष्ट्वा तपस्तप्त्वा कृपणैः पुत्रगृद्धिभिः ।
दश मासान्परिधृता जायन्ते कुलपांसनाः ॥१८॥
दश मासान्परिधृता जायन्ते कुलपांसनाः ॥१८॥
18. devāniṣṭvā tapastaptvā kṛpaṇaiḥ putragṛddhibhiḥ ,
daśa māsānparidhṛtā jāyante kulapāṁsanāḥ.
daśa māsānparidhṛtā jāyante kulapāṁsanāḥ.
18.
devān iṣṭvā tapaḥ taptvā kṛpaṇaiḥ putragṛddhibhiḥ
daśa māsān paridhṛtāḥ jāyante kulapāṃsanāḥ
daśa māsān paridhṛtāḥ jāyante kulapāṃsanāḥ
18.
kṛpaṇaiḥ putragṛddhibhiḥ devān iṣṭvā tapas taptvā
daśa māsān paridhṛtāḥ kulapāṃsanāḥ jāyante
daśa māsān paridhṛtāḥ kulapāṃsanāḥ jāyante
18.
Even after worshipping the deities and performing austerity (tapas), those who are carried for ten months by wretched people, greedy for sons, are born as disgracers of the family.
अपरे धनधान्यानि भोगांश्च पितृसंचितान् ।
विपुलानभिजायन्ते लब्धास्तैरेव मङ्गलैः ॥१९॥

19. apare dhanadhānyāni bhogāṁśca pitṛsaṁcitān ,
vipulānabhijāyante labdhāstaireva maṅgalaiḥ.

apare dhanadhānyāni bhogān ca pitṛsañcitān
vipulān abhijāyante labdhāḥ taiḥ eva maṅgalaiḥ

apare dhanadhānyāni pitṛsañcitān vipulān ca
bhogān taiḥ eva labdhāḥ maṅgalaiḥ abhijāyante
bhogān taiḥ eva labdhāḥ maṅgalaiḥ abhijāyante
19.
Others are born into abundant wealth and grains, and enjoyments accumulated by their ancestors, having acquired these through those very auspicious deeds.
अन्योन्यं समभिप्रेत्य मैथुनस्य समागमे ।
उपद्रव इवाविष्टो योनिं गर्भः प्रपद्यते ॥२०॥

20. anyonyaṁ samabhipretya maithunasya samāgame ,
upadrava ivāviṣṭo yoniṁ garbhaḥ prapadyate.

When there is a sexual union, mutually desired, a fetus enters the womb, like a disturbance or affliction.
शीर्णं परशरीरेण निच्छवीकं शरीरिणम् ।
प्राणिनां प्राणसंरोधे मांसश्लेष्मविचेष्टितम् ॥२१॥

21. śīrṇaṁ paraśarīreṇa nicchavīkaṁ śarīriṇam ,
prāṇināṁ prāṇasaṁrodhe māṁsaśleṣmaviceṣṭitam.
prāṇināṁ prāṇasaṁrodhe māṁsaśleṣmaviceṣṭitam.
21.
śīrṇam paraśarīreṇa nicchavīkam śarīriṇam
prāṇinām prāṇasaṃrodhe māṃsaśleṣmaviceṣṭitam
prāṇinām prāṇasaṃrodhe māṃsaśleṣmaviceṣṭitam

prāṇinām prāṇasaṃrodhe (sati) śarīriṇam paraśarīreṇa
śīrṇam nicchavīkam māṃsaśleṣmaviceṣṭitam (bhavati)
śīrṇam nicchavīkam māṃsaśleṣmaviceṣṭitam (bhavati)
21.
When the life-breath of living beings ceases, the embodied self (ātman) is seen as decayed by its externalized body, devoid of luster, and reduced to a mere activity of flesh and phlegm.
निर्दग्धं परदेहेन परदेहं चलाचलम् ।
विनश्यन्तं विनाशान्ते नावि नावमिवाहितम् ॥२२॥
विनश्यन्तं विनाशान्ते नावि नावमिवाहितम् ॥२२॥
22. nirdagdhaṁ paradehena paradehaṁ calācalam ,
vinaśyantaṁ vināśānte nāvi nāvamivāhitam.
vinaśyantaṁ vināśānte nāvi nāvamivāhitam.

Even those doctors who are highly skilled, expert, and well-supplied with medicines, are tormented by diseases, just as deer are afflicted by hunters.

O best among sages, this most supreme secret has been told to you, by which the gods, having abandoned the mortal world, went to heaven.

Bhishma said: Having heard Narada's words, the extremely intelligent and resolute Shuka, after pondering with his mind, did not reach a firm conclusion.

There is great trouble associated with children and wives, and great effort is required for sacred knowledge and tradition. What, then, could be an eternal state, one with little trouble and great prosperity?

Then, after contemplating for a moment, realizing the definite course for his self (ātman), and being one who discerns the higher and lower aspects of natural law (dharma), he considered the supreme path to ultimate welfare.

How, then, might I, remaining free from affliction, attain the supreme state? How can I ensure that I do not return again to the ocean of rebirth and transmigration (saṃsāra)?

Indeed, I long for the supreme state, from which one does not return again, having relinquished all attachments, which is the mind's resolute goal.

I will go to that place where my inner self (ātman) will find peace. There, I will dwell eternally, imperishable and immutable.

However, that supreme state cannot be attained without the practice of (yoga). Indeed, bondage by past actions (karma) does not apply to one who is liberated.

वायुभूतः प्रवेक्ष्यामि तेजोराशिं दिवाकरम् ॥५३॥

Therefore, having adopted the discipline of (yoga) and abandoned this bodily dwelling, I will become like air and enter the radiant mass of the sun.

क्षीयते हि सदा सोमः पुनश्चैवाभिपूर्यते ॥५४॥

Indeed, this (self, ātman) does not meet with destruction. Just as the moon (Soma), even if disturbed by the hosts of gods, may appear to fall to earth, it always rises again. For the moon (Soma) constantly wanes and is surely replenished anew.
रविस्तु संतापयति लोकान्रश्मिभिरुल्बणैः ।
सर्वतस्तेज आदत्ते नित्यमक्षयमण्डलः ॥५५॥

The sun, indeed, with its fierce rays, intensely heats the worlds. It constantly draws energy from all sides, having an imperishable disk.

Therefore, it pleases me to go to the sun, whose splendor is radiant. Here, I shall dwell, unassailable, with an unattached inner self (ātman).

And I, having cast off this body in the abode of the sun, shall go with the sages to that intensely difficult solar (tejas).

I bid farewell to the mountains (nagas), serpents (nāgas), hills, earth, directions, and the sky; and to the devas, dānavas, gandharvas, piśācas, uragas, and rākṣasas.

पश्यन्तु योगवीर्यं मे सर्वे देवाः सहर्षिभिः ॥५९॥

59. lokeṣu sarvabhūtāni pravekṣyāmi nasaṁśayaḥ ,

I will undoubtedly enter into all beings in the worlds. Let all the gods, along with the sages, witness my power (yoga).

Then, having taken leave of that world-renowned sage Narada, and having fully received his permission, he went towards his father.

The sage Shuka, having saluted the great-souled sage Dvaipayana, and having respectfully circumambulated Krishna (Dvaipayana), questioned him.
श्रुत्वा ऋषिस्तद्वचनं शुकस्य प्रीतो महात्मा पुनराह चैनम् ।
भो भोः पुत्र स्थीयतां तावदद्य यावच्चक्षुः प्रीणयामि त्वदर्थम् ॥६२॥

Having heard Shuka's words, the great-souled sage (Vyasa), pleased, then spoke to him again: 'O son, please stay here for a while today, so that I may feast my eyes upon you.'
निरपेक्षः शुको भूत्वा निःस्नेहो मुक्तबन्धनः ।
मोक्षमेवानुसंचिन्त्य गमनाय मनो दधे ।
पितरं संपरित्यज्य जगाम द्विजसत्तमः ॥६३॥

Shuka, the best among the twice-born (dvija), having become unattached, devoid of affection, and freed from all bonds, set his mind on departure, meditating solely on liberation (mokṣa). Abandoning his father, he left.
