भीष्म उवाच ।
गुणैः समुदितं सम्यगिदं नः प्रथितं कुलम् ।
अत्यन्यान्पृथिवीपालान्पृथिव्यामधिराज्यभाक् ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
guṇaiḥ samuditaṁ samyagidaṁ naḥ prathitaṁ kulam ,
atyanyānpṛthivīpālānpṛthivyāmadhirājyabhāk.
1. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca guṇaiḥ samuditam samyak idam naḥ prathitam
kulam ati anyān pṛthivīpālān pṛthivyām adhirājyabhāk
1. Bhīṣma said: "This renowned family of ours, truly endowed with virtues, enjoys paramount sovereignty on earth, surpassing all other kings."
रक्षितं राजभिः पूर्वैर्धर्मविद्भिर्महात्मभिः ।
नोत्सादमगमच्चेदं कदाचिदिह नः कुलम् ॥२॥
2. rakṣitaṁ rājabhiḥ pūrvairdharmavidbhirmahātmabhiḥ ,
notsādamagamaccedaṁ kadācidiha naḥ kulam.
2. rakṣitam rājabhiḥ pūrvaiḥ dharmavidbhiḥ mahātmabhiḥ
na utsādam agamat ca idam kadācit iha naḥ kulam
2. This family (kula) of ours, protected by ancient kings who were great-souled (mahātman) and knowledgeable in natural law (dharma), has never, at any time, met with ruin here.
मया च सत्यवत्या च कृष्णेन च महात्मना ।
समवस्थापितं भूयो युष्मासु कुलतन्तुषु ॥३॥
3. mayā ca satyavatyā ca kṛṣṇena ca mahātmanā ,
samavasthāpitaṁ bhūyo yuṣmāsu kulatantuṣu.
3. mayā ca satyavatyā ca kṛṣṇena ca mahātmanā
samavasthāpitam bhūyaḥ yuṣmāsu kulatantuṣu
3. And by me, along with Satyavati and the great-souled (mahātman) Krishna (Kṛṣṇa) (Vyāsa), this family lineage was re-established upon you, its continuators.
वर्धते तदिदं पुत्र कुलं सागरवद्यथा ।
तथा मया विधातव्यं त्वया चैव विशेषतः ॥४॥
4. vardhate tadidaṁ putra kulaṁ sāgaravadyathā ,
tathā mayā vidhātavyaṁ tvayā caiva viśeṣataḥ.
4. vardhate tat idam putra kulam sāgaravat yathā
tathā mayā vidhātavyam tvayā ca eva viśeṣataḥ
4. O son, just as this family (kula) expands like the ocean, similarly, it must be maintained by me, and especially by you.
श्रूयते यादवी कन्या अनुरूपा कुलस्य नः ।
सुबलस्यात्मजा चैव तथा मद्रेश्वरस्य च ॥५॥
5. śrūyate yādavī kanyā anurūpā kulasya naḥ ,
subalasyātmajā caiva tathā madreśvarasya ca.
5. śrūyate yādavī kanyā anurūpā kulasya naḥ
subalasya ātmajā ca eva tathā madreśvarasya ca
5. It is heard that there is a Yādava maiden suitable for our family. Likewise, the daughter (ātmajā) of Subala and the king of Madra are also suitable.
कुलीना रूपवत्यश्च नाथवत्यश्च सर्वशः ।
उचिताश्चैव संबन्धे तेऽस्माकं क्षत्रियर्षभाः ॥६॥
6. kulīnā rūpavatyaśca nāthavatyaśca sarvaśaḥ ,
ucitāścaiva saṁbandhe te'smākaṁ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ.
6. kulīnāḥ rūpavatyaḥ ca nāthavatyaḥ ca sarvaśaḥ
ucitāḥ ca eva sambandhe te asmākam kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ
6. They are from noble families, beautiful, and in every respect possess suitable protectors. Indeed, O best among kṣatriyas, they are appropriate for an alliance with us.
मन्ये वरयितव्यास्ता इत्यहं धीमतां वर ।
संतानार्थं कुलस्यास्य यद्वा विदुर मन्यसे ॥७॥
7. manye varayitavyāstā ityahaṁ dhīmatāṁ vara ,
saṁtānārthaṁ kulasyāsya yadvā vidura manyase.
7. manye varayitavyāḥ tāḥ iti aham dhīmatām vara
santānārtham kulasya asya yat vā vidura manyase
7. O best among the wise, I believe they should be chosen for the sake of this family's progeny. Or, O Vidura, what do you think?
विदुर उवाच ।
भवान्पिता भवान्माता भवान्नः परमो गुरुः ।
तस्मात्स्वयं कुलस्यास्य विचार्य कुरु यद्धितम् ॥८॥
8. vidura uvāca ,
bhavānpitā bhavānmātā bhavānnaḥ paramo guruḥ ,
tasmātsvayaṁ kulasyāsya vicārya kuru yaddhitam.
8. viduraḥ uvāca bhavān pitā bhavān mātā bhavān naḥ paramaḥ
guruḥ tasmāt svayam kulasya asya vicārya kuru yat hitam
8. Vidura said: You are our father, you are our mother, and you are our supreme teacher (guru). Therefore, having deliberated, you yourself should do what is beneficial for this family.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
अथ शुश्राव विप्रेभ्यो गान्धारीं सुबलात्मजाम् ।
आराध्य वरदं देवं भगनेत्रहरं हरम् ।
गान्धारी किल पुत्राणां शतं लेभे वरं शुभा ॥९॥
9. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
atha śuśrāva viprebhyo gāndhārīṁ subalātmajām ,
ārādhya varadaṁ devaṁ bhaganetraharaṁ haram ,
gāndhārī kila putrāṇāṁ śataṁ lebhe varaṁ śubhā.
9. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca atha śuśrāva viprebhyaḥ
gāndhārīm subalātmajām ārādhya
varadam devam bhaganetraharam haram gāndhārī
kila putrāṇām śatam lebhe varam śubhā
9. Vaiśampāyana said: Then he heard from the Brahmins that Gāndhārī, the daughter of Subala, had propitiated the boon-bestowing deity, Hara (Śiva), who had plucked out Bhaga's eyes. Indeed, the auspicious Gāndhārī had obtained a boon for a hundred sons.
इति श्रुत्वा च तत्त्वेन भीष्मः कुरुपितामहः ।
ततो गान्धारराजस्य प्रेषयामास भारत ॥१०॥
10. iti śrutvā ca tattvena bhīṣmaḥ kurupitāmahaḥ ,
tato gāndhārarājasya preṣayāmāsa bhārata.
10. iti śrutvā ca tattvena bhīṣmaḥ kurupitāmahaḥ
tataḥ gāndhārarājasya preṣayāmāsa bhārata
10. And having heard this truly, Bhīṣma, the grandfather of the Kurus, then sent word to the king of Gāndhāra, O Bhārata.
अचक्षुरिति तत्रासीत्सुबलस्य विचारणा ।
कुलं ख्यातिं च वृत्तं च बुद्ध्या तु प्रसमीक्ष्य सः ।
ददौ तां धृतराष्ट्राय गान्धारीं धर्मचारिणीम् ॥११॥
11. acakṣuriti tatrāsītsubalasya vicāraṇā ,
kulaṁ khyātiṁ ca vṛttaṁ ca buddhyā tu prasamīkṣya saḥ ,
dadau tāṁ dhṛtarāṣṭrāya gāndhārīṁ dharmacāriṇīm.
11. acarkṣuḥ iti tatra āsīt subalasya
vicāraṇā kulam khyātim ca vṛttam ca
buddhyā tu prasamīkṣya saḥ dadau tām
dhṛtarāṣṭrāya gāndhārīm dharmacāriṇīm
11. There, Subala deliberated about the fact that Dhritarashtra was blind. But, having thoroughly considered his lineage, renown, and character with his wisdom, he gave Gandhari, who was dedicated to her intrinsic nature (dharma), to Dhritarashtra.
गान्धारी त्वपि शुश्राव धृतराष्ट्रमचक्षुषम् ।
आत्मानं दित्सितं चास्मै पित्रा मात्रा च भारत ॥१२॥
12. gāndhārī tvapi śuśrāva dhṛtarāṣṭramacakṣuṣam ,
ātmānaṁ ditsitaṁ cāsmai pitrā mātrā ca bhārata.
12. gāndhārī tu api śuśrāva dhṛtarāṣṭram acarkṣuṣam
ātmānam ditsitam ca asmai pitrā mātrā ca bhārata
12. O Bharata, Gandhari, for her part, also heard that Dhritarashtra was blind, and that she herself was intended to be given to him by her father and mother.
ततः सा पट्टमादाय कृत्वा बहुगुणं शुभा ।
बबन्ध नेत्रे स्वे राजन्पतिव्रतपरायणा ।
नात्यश्नीयां पतिमहमित्येवं कृतनिश्चया ॥१३॥
13. tataḥ sā paṭṭamādāya kṛtvā bahuguṇaṁ śubhā ,
babandha netre sve rājanpativrataparāyaṇā ,
nātyaśnīyāṁ patimahamityevaṁ kṛtaniścayā.
13. tataḥ sā paṭṭam ādaya kṛtvā bahuguṇam
śubhā babandha netre sve rājan
pativrataparāyaṇā na ati aśnīyām
patim aham iti evam kṛtaniścayā
13. Then, O King, that auspicious lady, supremely devoted to her husband's vow, having taken a multi-layered strip of cloth and prepared it, bound her own eyes. She was resolute, thinking, 'I shall not eat more than my husband.'
ततो गान्धारराजस्य पुत्रः शकुनिरभ्ययात् ।
स्वसारं परया लक्ष्म्या युक्तामादाय कौरवान् ॥१४॥
14. tato gāndhārarājasya putraḥ śakunirabhyayāt ,
svasāraṁ parayā lakṣmyā yuktāmādāya kauravān.
14. tataḥ gāndhārarājasya putraḥ śakuniḥ abhyayāt
svasāraṃ parayā lakṣmyā yuktām ādāya kauravān
14. Then, Śakuni, the son of the king of Gāndhāra, came to the Kurus, bringing his sister, who was endowed with great beauty.
दत्त्वा स भगिनीं वीरो यथार्हं च परिच्छदम् ।
पुनरायात्स्वनगरं भीष्मेण प्रतिपूजितः ॥१५॥
15. dattvā sa bhaginīṁ vīro yathārhaṁ ca paricchadam ,
punarāyātsvanagaraṁ bhīṣmeṇa pratipūjitaḥ.
15. dattvā saḥ bhaginīm vīraḥ yathārham ca paricchadam
punaḥ āyāt svanagaram bhīṣmeṇa pratipūjitaḥ
15. Having given his sister and a suitable dowry, that hero, honored by Bhīṣma, returned to his own city.
गान्धार्यपि वरारोहा शीलाचारविचेष्टितैः ।
तुष्टिं कुरूणां सर्वेषां जनयामास भारत ॥१६॥
16. gāndhāryapi varārohā śīlācāraviceṣṭitaiḥ ,
tuṣṭiṁ kurūṇāṁ sarveṣāṁ janayāmāsa bhārata.
16. gāndhārī api varārohā śīlācāraviceṣṭitaiḥ
tuṣṭim kurūṇām sarveṣām janayāmāsa bhārata
16. O Bhārata, Gāndhārī, with her graceful physique, also brought satisfaction to all the Kurus through her virtuous conduct and actions.
वृत्तेनाराध्य तान्सर्वान्पतिव्रतपरायणा ।
वाचापि पुरुषानन्यान्सुव्रता नान्वकीर्तयत् ॥१७॥
17. vṛttenārādhya tānsarvānpativrataparāyaṇā ,
vācāpi puruṣānanyānsuvratā nānvakīrtayat.
17. vṛttena ārādhya tān sarvān pativrataparāyaṇā
vācā api puruṣān anyān suvratā na anvakīrtayat
17. Being intensely devoted to her husband and observing good vows, she pleased all of them through her conduct. She did not even mention other men by word of mouth.
