द्रुपद उवाच ।
अश्रुत्वैवं वचनं ते महर्षे मया पूर्वं यतितं कार्यमेतत् ।
न वै शक्यं विहितस्यापयातुं तदेवेदमुपपन्नं विधानम् ॥१॥
1. drupada uvāca ,
aśrutvaivaṁ vacanaṁ te maharṣe; mayā pūrvaṁ yatitaṁ kāryametat ,
na vai śakyaṁ vihitasyāpayātuṁ; tadevedamupapannaṁ vidhānam.
1. drupada uvāca aśrutvā evam vacanam
te maharṣe mayā pūrvam yatitam kāryam
etat na vai śakyam vihitasya
apayātum tat eva idam upapannam vidhānam
1. Drupada said: "O great sage, because I had not heard such words from you before, I had indeed made efforts concerning this matter previously. However, it is certainly not possible to deviate from what has been ordained, and thus, this arrangement has fittingly come to pass."
दिष्टस्य ग्रन्थिरनिवर्तनीयः स्वकर्मणा विहितं नेह किंचित् ।
कृतं निमित्तं हि वरैकहेतोस्तदेवेदमुपपन्नं बहूनाम् ॥२॥
2. diṣṭasya granthiranivartanīyaḥ; svakarmaṇā vihitaṁ neha kiṁcit ,
kṛtaṁ nimittaṁ hi varaikaheto;stadevedamupapannaṁ bahūnām.
2. diṣṭasya granthiḥ anivartanīyaḥ
svakarmaṇā vihitam na iha kiñcit
kṛtam nimittam hi varaikahetoḥ
tat eva idam upapannam bahūnām
2. The knot of destiny (diṣṭa) is irreversible; nothing here is truly ordained solely by one's individual action (karma). Indeed, a specific cause (nimitta) was created for the sake of a single boon (vara) [referring to Draupadi's past wish]. As a result, that very thing [her marrying multiple husbands] has now fittingly occurred for many.
यथैव कृष्णोक्तवती पुरस्तान्नैकान्पतीन्मे भगवान्ददातु ।
स चाप्येवं वरमित्यब्रवीत्तां देवो हि वेद परमं यदत्र ॥३॥
3. yathaiva kṛṣṇoktavatī purastā;nnaikānpatīnme bhagavāndadātu ,
sa cāpyevaṁ varamityabravīttāṁ; devo hi veda paramaṁ yadatra.
3. yathā eva kṛṣṇā uktavatī purastāt
na ekān patīn me bhagavān dadātu
sa ca api evam varam iti abravīt
tām devaḥ hi veda paramam yat atra
3. Just as Kṛṣṇā (Draupadi) had said previously, 'May the Lord grant me many husbands!' and he [Lord Shiva] indeed said to her, 'So be it (vara)!' For the god truly knows what is the supreme (parama) outcome in this matter.
यदि वायं विहितः शंकरेण धर्मोऽधर्मो वा नात्र ममापराधः ।
गृह्णन्त्विमे विधिवत्पाणिमस्या यथोपजोषं विहितैषां हि कृष्णा ॥४॥
4. yadi vāyaṁ vihitaḥ śaṁkareṇa; dharmo'dharmo vā nātra mamāparādhaḥ ,
gṛhṇantvime vidhivatpāṇimasyā; yathopajoṣaṁ vihitaiṣāṁ hi kṛṣṇā.
4. yadi vā ayam vihitaḥ śaṅkareṇa dharmaḥ
adharmaḥ vā na atra mama aparādhaḥ
gṛhṇantu ime vidhivat pāṇim asyāḥ
yathā upajoṣam vihitā eṣām hi kṛṣṇā
4. Whether this arrangement was ordained by Shankara (Shiva), and whether it is an act of righteousness (dharma) or unrighteousness (adharma), there is no fault of mine in this matter. Let these [men] lawfully take her hand, for Kṛṣṇā (Draupadi) has indeed been ordained for them according to their desire.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततोऽब्रवीद्भगवान्धर्मराजमद्य पुण्याहमुत पाण्डवेय ।
अद्य पौष्यं योगमुपैति चन्द्रमाः पाणिं कृष्णायास्त्वं गृहाणाद्य पूर्वम् ॥५॥
5. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato'bravīdbhagavāndharmarāja;madya puṇyāhamuta pāṇḍaveya ,
adya pauṣyaṁ yogamupaiti candramāḥ; pāṇiṁ kṛṣṇāyāstvaṁ gṛhāṇādya pūrvam.
5. vaiśampāyana uvāca tataḥ abravīt bhagavān
dharmarājam adya puṇyāham uta pāṇḍaveya
adya pauṣyam yogam upaiti candramāḥ
pāṇim kṛṣṇāyāḥ tvam gṛhāṇa adya pūrvam
5. Vaishampayana said: "Then the venerable Lord [Vyasa] spoke to the King of Righteousness (Dharmarāja), Yudhishthira, today: 'O son of Pandu (Pāṇḍaveya), today is indeed an auspicious day! The moon enters the Pushya constellation (Pauṣya yoga) today. Therefore, you should take Kṛṣṇā's (Draupadi's) hand first today.'"
ततो राजा यज्ञसेनः सपुत्रो जन्यार्थ युक्तं बहु तत्तदग्र्यम् ।
समानयामास सुतां च कृष्णामाप्लाव्य रत्नैर्बहुभिर्विभूष्य ॥६॥
6. tato rājā yajñasenaḥ saputro; janyārtha yuktaṁ bahu tattadagryam ,
samānayāmāsa sutāṁ ca kṛṣṇā;māplāvya ratnairbahubhirvibhūṣya.
6. tataḥ rājā yajñasenaḥ saputraḥ
janyārtham yuktam bahu tattadagryam
samānayāmāsa sutām ca kṛṣṇām
āplāvya ratnaiḥ bahubhiḥ vibhūṣya
6. Then King Yajnasena, accompanied by his son, assembled many excellent provisions suitable for the wedding. He also brought his daughter, Krishna, after bathing her and adorning her with numerous jewels.
ततः सर्वे सुहृदस्तत्र तस्य समाजग्मुः सचिवा मन्त्रिणश्च ।
द्रष्टुं विवाहं परमप्रतीता द्विजाश्च पौराश्च यथाप्रधानाः ॥७॥
7. tataḥ sarve suhṛdastatra tasya; samājagmuḥ sacivā mantriṇaśca ,
draṣṭuṁ vivāhaṁ paramapratītā; dvijāśca paurāśca yathāpradhānāḥ.
7. tataḥ sarve suhṛdaḥ tatra tasya
samājagmuḥ sacivāḥ mantriṇaḥ ca
draṣṭum vivāham paramapratītāḥ
dvijāḥ ca paurāḥ ca yathāpradhānāḥ
7. Then all of his friends, ministers, and counselors gathered there, along with the most prominent Brahmins (dvija) and citizens, all greatly pleased to witness the wedding.
तत्तस्य वेश्मार्थिजनोपशोभितं विकीर्णपद्मोत्पलभूषिताजिरम् ।
महार्हरत्नौघविचित्रमाबभौ दिवं यथा निर्मलतारकाचितम् ॥८॥
8. tattasya veśmārthijanopaśobhitaṁ; vikīrṇapadmotpalabhūṣitājiram ,
mahārharatnaughavicitramābabhau; divaṁ yathā nirmalatārakācitam.
8. tat tasya veśma arthijanopaśobhitam
vikīrṇapadmotpalabhūṣitājiram
mahārharatnaughavicitram ābabhau
divam yathā nirmalatārakācitam
8. His mansion, splendidly adorned by numerous supplicants, with its courtyards beautified by scattered lotuses and water lilies, and gleaming with a multitude of precious jewels, shone like the clear sky studded with bright stars.
ततस्तु ते कौरवराजपुत्रा विभूषिताः कुण्डलिनो युवानः ।
महार्हवस्त्रा वरचन्दनोक्षिताः कृताभिषेकाः कृतमङ्गलक्रियाः ॥९॥
9. tatastu te kauravarājaputrā; vibhūṣitāḥ kuṇḍalino yuvānaḥ ,
mahārhavastrā varacandanokṣitāḥ; kṛtābhiṣekāḥ kṛtamaṅgalakriyāḥ.
9. tataḥ tu te kauravarājaputrāḥ
vibhūṣitāḥ kuṇḍalinaḥ yuvānaḥ
mahārhavastrāḥ varacandanokṣitāḥ
kṛtābhiṣekāḥ kṛtamaṅgalakriyāḥ
9. Then, those young Kuru princes - adorned and wearing earrings, clad in precious garments, anointed with excellent sandalwood paste, and having completed their ritual baths and auspicious (maṅgala) ceremonies -
पुरोहितेनाग्निसमानवर्चसा सहैव धौम्येन यथाविधि प्रभो ।
क्रमेण सर्वे विविशुश्च तत्सदो महर्षभा गोष्ठमिवाभिनन्दिनः ॥१०॥
10. purohitenāgnisamānavarcasā; sahaiva dhaumyena yathāvidhi prabho ,
krameṇa sarve viviśuśca tatsado; maharṣabhā goṣṭhamivābhinandinaḥ.
10. purohitena agnisamānavarcasā saha
eva dhaumyena yathāvidhi prabho
krameṇa sarve viviśuḥ ca tat sadaḥ
maharṣabhāḥ goṣṭham iva abhinandinaḥ
10. O lord, with the priest Dhaumya, who possessed a radiance like fire, performing rites according to sacred injunctions, all of them then joyfully entered that assembly hall one by one, like great bulls entering a cattle pen.
ततः समाधाय स वेदपारगो जुहाव मन्त्रैर्ज्वलितं हुताशनम् ।
युधिष्ठिरं चाप्युपनीय मन्त्रविन्नियोजयामास सहैव कृष्णया ॥११॥
11. tataḥ samādhāya sa vedapārago; juhāva mantrairjvalitaṁ hutāśanam ,
yudhiṣṭhiraṁ cāpyupanīya mantravi;nniyojayāmāsa sahaiva kṛṣṇayā.
11. tataḥ samādhāya sa vedapāragaḥ
juhāva mantraiḥ jvalitam hutāśanam
| yudhiṣṭhiram ca api upanīya
mantravit niyojayāmāsa saha eva kṛṣṇayā
11. Then, that expert in the Vedas, having properly arranged the blazing fire, offered oblations with mantras. And that knower of mantras, bringing Yudhishthira near, engaged him in the ritual along with Krishnaa (Draupadi).
प्रदक्षिणं तौ प्रगृहीतपाणी समानयामास स वेदपारगः ।
ततोऽभ्यनुज्ञाय तमाजिशोभिनं पुरोहितो राजगृहाद्विनिर्ययौ ॥१२॥
12. pradakṣiṇaṁ tau pragṛhītapāṇī; samānayāmāsa sa vedapāragaḥ ,
tato'bhyanujñāya tamājiśobhinaṁ; purohito rājagṛhādviniryayau.
12. pradakṣiṇam tau pragṛhītāpāṇī
samānayāmāsa sa vedapāragaḥ |
tataḥ abhyanuñjāya tam ājiśobhinam
purohitaḥ rājagṛhāt viniryayau
12. That expert in the Vedas led the couple, who had joined hands, in a clockwise circumambulation. Then, having given his blessing to Yudhishthira, who was resplendent in battle, the family priest departed from the king's house.
क्रमेण चानेन नराधिपात्मजा वरस्त्रियास्ते जगृहुस्तदा करम् ।
अहन्यहन्युत्तमरूपधारिणो महारथाः कौरववंशवर्धनाः ॥१३॥
13. krameṇa cānena narādhipātmajā; varastriyāste jagṛhustadā karam ,
ahanyahanyuttamarūpadhāriṇo; mahārathāḥ kauravavaṁśavardhanāḥ.
13. krameṇa ca anena narādhipātmajāḥ
varastriyāḥ te jagṛhuḥ tadā karam
| ahani ahani uttamārūpadhāriṇaḥ
mahārathāḥ kauravavaṃśavardhanāḥ
13. And in this manner, the princes (the sons of the king) then took the hand of that excellent woman (Draupadi). Day after day, the great charioteers, who were greatly handsome and augmented the Kuru lineage, did this.
इदं च तत्राद्भुतरूपमुत्तमं जगाद विप्रर्षिरतीतमानुषम् ।
महानुभावा किल सा सुमध्यमा बभूव कन्यैव गते गतेऽहनि ॥१४॥
14. idaṁ ca tatrādbhutarūpamuttamaṁ; jagāda viprarṣiratītamānuṣam ,
mahānubhāvā kila sā sumadhyamā; babhūva kanyaiva gate gate'hani.
14. idam ca tatra adbhutārūpam uttamam
jagāda viprarṣiḥ atītamānuṣam
| mahānubhāvā kila sā sumadhyamā
babhūva kanyā eva gate gate ahani
14. And concerning this, the Brahmin-sage spoke of a most wonderful and superhuman phenomenon: Indeed, that glorious, slender-waisted woman (Draupadi) became a maiden again with each passing day.
कृते विवाहे द्रुपदो धनं ददौ महारथेभ्यो बहुरूपमुत्तमम् ।
शतं रथानां वरहेमभूषिणां चतुर्युजां हेमखलीनमालिनाम् ॥१५॥
15. kṛte vivāhe drupado dhanaṁ dadau; mahārathebhyo bahurūpamuttamam ,
śataṁ rathānāṁ varahemabhūṣiṇāṁ; caturyujāṁ hemakhalīnamālinām.
15. kṛte vivāhe drupadaḥ dhanam dadau
mahārathebhyaḥ bahurūpam uttamam
| śatam rathānām varahemabhūṣiṇām
caturyujām hemakhalīnamālinām
15. After the marriage was performed, Drupada gave excellent and abundant wealth to the great charioteers. This included a hundred chariots, beautifully adorned with fine gold, each drawn by four horses, and fitted with golden bridles.
शतं गजानामभिपद्मिनां तथा शतं गिरीणामिव हेमशृङ्गिणाम् ।
तथैव दासीशतमग्र्ययौवनं महार्हवेषाभरणाम्बरस्रजम् ॥१६॥
16. śataṁ gajānāmabhipadmināṁ tathā; śataṁ girīṇāmiva hemaśṛṅgiṇām ,
tathaiva dāsīśatamagryayauvanaṁ; mahārhaveṣābharaṇāmbarasrajam.
16. śatam gajānām abhipadminām tathā
śatam girīṇām iva hemaśṛṅgiṇām
tathā eva dāsīśatam agryayauvanam
mahārhaveṣābharaṇāmbarasrajam
16. A hundred elephants, distinguished by lotus-marks, and likewise, a hundred mountains with golden peaks. Similarly, a hundred young maidservants in the prime of their youth, adorned with costly garments, ornaments, and garlands.
पृथक्पृथक्चैव दशायुतान्वितं धनं ददौ सौमकिरग्निसाक्षिकम् ।
तथैव वस्त्राणि च भूषणानि प्रभावयुक्तानि महाधनानि ॥१७॥
17. pṛthakpṛthakcaiva daśāyutānvitaṁ; dhanaṁ dadau saumakiragnisākṣikam ,
tathaiva vastrāṇi ca bhūṣaṇāni; prabhāvayuktāni mahādhanāni.
17. pṛthak pṛthak ca eva daśāyutānvitam
dhanam dadau saumakiḥ agnisākṣikam
tathā eva vastrāṇi ca
bhūṣaṇāni prabhāvayuktāni mahādhanāni
17. Saumaki (King Drupada) then gave wealth, amounting to one hundred thousand for each item, separately, with fire as a witness. Likewise, he also gave magnificent and extremely valuable clothes and ornaments.
कृते विवाहे च ततः स्म पाण्डवाः प्रभूतरत्नामुपलभ्य तां श्रियम् ।
विजह्रुरिन्द्रप्रतिमा महाबलाः पुरे तु पाञ्चालनृपस्य तस्य ह ॥१८॥
18. kṛte vivāhe ca tataḥ sma pāṇḍavāḥ; prabhūtaratnāmupalabhya tāṁ śriyam ,
vijahrurindrapratimā mahābalāḥ; pure tu pāñcālanṛpasya tasya ha.
18. kṛte vivāhe ca tataḥ sma pāṇḍavāḥ
prabhūtaratnām upalabhya tām śriyam
vijahruḥ indrapratimāḥ mahābalāḥ
pure tu pāñcālanṛpasya tasya ha
18. After the wedding ceremony, the mighty Pāṇḍavas, who were like Indra, having obtained that splendor (śrī) abundant with jewels, then sported joyfully in the city of that Pañcāla king.
