भीष्म उवाच ।
अथ सा स्त्री तमुक्त्वा तु विप्रमेवं भवत्विति ।
तैलं दिव्यमुपादाय स्नानशाटीमुपानयत् ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
atha sā strī tamuktvā tu vipramevaṁ bhavatviti ,
tailaṁ divyamupādāya snānaśāṭīmupānayat.

1. Bhīṣma said: Then that woman, having said "So be it!" to that brahmin (vipra), took divine oil and brought the bathing cloth.
अनुज्ञाता च मुनिना सा स्त्री तेन महात्मना ।
अथास्य तैलेनाङ्गानि सर्वाण्येवाभ्यमृक्षयत् ॥२॥
2. anujñātā ca muninā sā strī tena mahātmanā ,
athāsya tailenāṅgāni sarvāṇyevābhyamṛkṣayat.
2. anujñātā ca muninā sā strī tena mahātmanā atha
asya tailena aṅgāni sarvāṇi eva abhyamṛkṣayat
2. ca sā strī tena mahātmanā muninā anujñātā atha

2. And that woman, permitted by that great-souled sage (muni), then massaged all his limbs with oil.
शनैश्चोत्सादितस्तत्र स्नानशालामुपागमत् ।
भद्रासनं ततश्चित्रं ऋषिरन्वाविशन्नवम् ॥३॥
3. śanaiścotsāditastatra snānaśālāmupāgamat ,
bhadrāsanaṁ tataścitraṁ ṛṣiranvāviśannavam.
3. śanaiḥ ca utsāditaḥ tatra snānaśālām upāgamat
bhadrāsanam tataḥ citram ṛṣiḥ anvāviśat navam
3. ca śanaiḥ utsāditaḥ tatra snānaśālām upāgamat

3. And slowly massaged, he then approached the bathing room. Subsequently, the sage (ṛṣi) occupied a new, beautiful, auspicious seat.
अथोपविष्टश्च यदा तस्मिन्भद्रासने तदा ।
स्नापयामास शनकैस्तमृषिं सुखहस्तवत् ।
दिव्यं च विधिवच्चक्रे सोपचारं मुनेस्तदा ॥४॥
4. athopaviṣṭaśca yadā tasminbhadrāsane tadā ,
snāpayāmāsa śanakaistamṛṣiṁ sukhahastavat ,
divyaṁ ca vidhivaccakre sopacāraṁ munestadā.
4. atha upaviṣṭaḥ ca yadā tasmin
bhadrāsane tadā snāpayāmāsa śanakaiḥ
tam ṛṣim sukhahastavat divyam ca
vidhivat cakre sopacāram muneḥ tadā
4. atha yadā upaviṣṭaḥ ca tasmin bhadrāsane
tadā (sā) śanakaiḥ tam ṛṣim
sukhahastavat snāpayāmāsa ca tadā
muneḥ divyam sopacāram vidhivat cakre
4. Then, when he was seated on that auspicious seat, she slowly bathed that sage (muni) with gentle hands. At that time, she also performed divine services for the sage, properly and with all due rites.
स तेन सुसुखोष्णेन तस्या हस्तसुखेन च ।
व्यतीतां रजनीं कृत्स्नां नाजानात्स महाव्रतः ॥५॥
5. sa tena susukhoṣṇena tasyā hastasukhena ca ,
vyatītāṁ rajanīṁ kṛtsnāṁ nājānātsa mahāvrataḥ.
5. saḥ tena susukhoṣṇena tasyāḥ hastasukhena ca
vyatītām rajanīm kṛtsnām na ajānāt saḥ mahāvrataḥ
5. saḥ saḥ mahāvrataḥ tena susukhoṣṇena tasyāḥ
hastasukhena ca kṛtsnām vyatītām rajanīm na ajānāt
5. Due to that very pleasant warmth and the comfort of her hands, that great ascetic (mahāvrata) did not realize that the entire night had passed.
तत उत्थाय स मुनिस्तदा परमविस्मितः ।
पूर्वस्यां दिशि सूर्यं च सोऽपश्यदुदितं दिवि ॥६॥
6. tata utthāya sa munistadā paramavismitaḥ ,
pūrvasyāṁ diśi sūryaṁ ca so'paśyaduditaṁ divi.
6. tataḥ utthāya saḥ muniḥ tadā paramavismitaḥ
pūrvasyām diśi sūryam ca saḥ apaśyat uditam divi
6. tataḥ utthāya tadā saḥ muniḥ paramavismitaḥ saḥ
pūrvasyām diśi divi uditam sūryam ca apaśyat
6. Then, having arisen, that sage (muni) was greatly astonished. He saw the sun, risen in the sky, in the eastern direction.
तस्य बुद्धिरियं किं नु मोहस्तत्त्वमिदं भवेत् ।
अथोपास्य सहस्रांशुं किं करोमीत्युवाच ताम् ॥७॥
7. tasya buddhiriyaṁ kiṁ nu mohastattvamidaṁ bhavet ,
athopāsya sahasrāṁśuṁ kiṁ karomītyuvāca tām.
7. tasya buddhiḥ iyam kim nu mohaḥ tattvam idam bhavet
atha upāsya sahasrāṃśum kim karomi iti uvāca tām
7. tasya iyam buddhiḥ kim nu mohaḥ idam tattvam bhavet
atha sahasrāṃśum upāsya kim karomi iti tām uvāca
7. He thought, "Is this delusion (moha), or could this be the truth (tattva)?" Then, after worshipping the sun (sahasrāṃśu), he said to her, "What shall I do?"
सा चामृतरसप्रख्यमृषेरन्नमुपाहरत् ।
तस्य स्वादुतयान्नस्य न प्रभूतं चकार सः ।
व्यगमच्चाप्यहःशेषं ततः संध्यागमत्पुनः ॥८॥
8. sā cāmṛtarasaprakhyamṛṣerannamupāharat ,
tasya svādutayānnasya na prabhūtaṁ cakāra saḥ ,
vyagamaccāpyahaḥśeṣaṁ tataḥ saṁdhyāgamatpunaḥ.
8. sā ca amṛtarasaprakhyam ṛṣeḥ annam
upāharat tasya svādutayā annasya na
prabhūtam cakāra saḥ vyagamat ca api
ahaḥśeṣam tataḥ sandhyā agamat punaḥ
8. sā ca ṛṣeḥ amṛtarasaprakhyam annam
upāharat tasya annasya svādutayā saḥ
prabhūtam na cakāra ahaḥśeṣam ca api
vyagamat tataḥ punaḥ sandhyā agamat
8. She offered the sage food that tasted like nectar. Due to the deliciousness of that food, he did not eat much. The remainder of the day also passed, and then evening came again.
अथ स्त्री भगवन्तं सा सुप्यतामित्यचोदयत् ।
तत्र वै शयने दिव्ये तस्य तस्याश्च कल्पिते ॥९॥
9. atha strī bhagavantaṁ sā supyatāmityacodayat ,
tatra vai śayane divye tasya tasyāśca kalpite.
9. atha strī bhagavantam sā supyatām iti acodayat
tatra vai śayane divye tasya tasyāḥ ca kalpite
9. atha sā strī bhagavantam supyatām iti acodayat
tatra vai tasya tasyāḥ ca kalpite divye śayane
9. Then that woman urged the venerable sage, saying, "Please sleep!" on the divine bed that had been prepared there for both of them.
अष्टावक्र उवाच ।
न भद्रे परदारेषु मनो मे संप्रसज्जति ।
उत्तिष्ठ भद्रे भद्रं ते स्वप वै विरमस्व च ॥१०॥
10. aṣṭāvakra uvāca ,
na bhadre paradāreṣu mano me saṁprasajjati ,
uttiṣṭha bhadre bhadraṁ te svapa vai viramasva ca.
10. aṣṭāvakraḥ uvāca na bhadre paradāreṣu manaḥ me saṃprasajjati
uttiṣṭha bhadre bhadram te svapa vai viramasva ca
10. aṣṭāvakraḥ uvāca bhadre me manaḥ paradāreṣu na saṃprasajjati
bhadre uttiṣṭha te bhadram svapa vai ca viramasva
10. Aṣṭāvakra said: "O virtuous lady, my mind does not become attached to other men's wives. Arise, O virtuous lady, may you be well! Sleep indeed, and desist (from this endeavor)."
भीष्म उवाच ।
सा तदा तेन विप्रेण तथा धृत्या निवर्तिता ।
स्वतन्त्रास्मीत्युवाचैनं न धर्मच्छलमस्ति ते ॥११॥
11. bhīṣma uvāca ,
sā tadā tena vipreṇa tathā dhṛtyā nivartitā ,
svatantrāsmītyuvācainaṁ na dharmacchalamasti te.
11. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca sā tadā tena vipreṇa tathā dhṛtyā nivartitā
svatantrā asmi iti uvāca enam na dharmacchalam asti te
11. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca sā tadā tena vipreṇa tathā dhṛtyā nivartitā
svatantrā asmi iti enam uvāca te dharmacchalam na asti
11. Bhīṣma said: "She was then thus deterred by that Brahmin with firmness. 'I am independent,' she said to him, 'and you have no deception (dharma-cchalam) regarding natural law (dharma) for you.'"
अष्टावक्र उवाच ।
नास्ति स्वतन्त्रता स्त्रीणामस्वतन्त्रा हि योषितः ।
प्रजापतिमतं ह्येतन्न स्त्री स्वातन्त्र्यमर्हति ॥१२॥
12. aṣṭāvakra uvāca ,
nāsti svatantratā strīṇāmasvatantrā hi yoṣitaḥ ,
prajāpatimataṁ hyetanna strī svātantryamarhati.
12. Aṣṭāvakra uvāca | na asti svatantratā strīṇām asvatantrā hi
yoṣitaḥ | prajāpati-matam hi etat na strī svātantryam arhati
12. Aṣṭāvakra uvāca strīṇām svatantratā na asti yoṣitaḥ hi
asvatantrā etat hi prajāpati-matam strī svātantryam na arhati
12. Aṣṭāvakra said: Women do not have independence; indeed, they are dependent. This is Prajāpati's view: a woman is not entitled to independence.
स्त्र्युवाच ।
बाधते मैथुनं विप्र मम भक्तिं च पश्य वै ।
अधर्मं प्राप्स्यसे विप्र यन्मां त्वं नाभिनन्दसि ॥१३॥
13. stryuvāca ,
bādhate maithunaṁ vipra mama bhaktiṁ ca paśya vai ,
adharmaṁ prāpsyase vipra yanmāṁ tvaṁ nābhinandasi.
13. strī uvāca | bādhate maithunam vipra mama bhaktim ca paśya
vai | adharmam prāpsyase vipra yat mām tvam na abhinandasi
13. strī uvāca vipra maithunam bādhate ca vai mama bhaktim
paśya vipra tvam yat mām na abhinandasi adharmam prāpsyase
13. The woman said: "O Brahmin, this sexual union (maithuna) afflicts me, and indeed, see my devotion (bhakti)! You will incur unrighteousness (adharma), O Brahmin, if you do not welcome me."
अष्टावक्र उवाच ।
हरन्ति दोषजातानि नरं जातं यथेच्छकम् ।
प्रभवामि सदा धृत्या भद्रे स्वं शयनं व्रज ॥१४॥
14. aṣṭāvakra uvāca ,
haranti doṣajātāni naraṁ jātaṁ yathecchakam ,
prabhavāmi sadā dhṛtyā bhadre svaṁ śayanaṁ vraja.
14. Aṣṭāvakra uvāca | haranti doṣa-jātāni naram jātam yathā-icchakām
| prabhavāmi sadā dhṛtyā bhadre svam śayanam vraja
14. Aṣṭāvakra uvāca doṣa-jātāni yathā-icchakām jātam naram
haranti bhadre sadā dhṛtyā prabhavāmi svam śayanam vraja
14. Aṣṭāvakra said: "The multitude of faults carries away a man who is born following his desires. O good lady, I am always firm through my resolve (dhṛti); go to your own bed."
स्त्र्युवाच ।
शिरसा प्रणमे विप्र प्रसादं कर्तुमर्हसि ।
भूमौ निपतमानायाः शरणं भव मेऽनघ ॥१५॥
15. stryuvāca ,
śirasā praṇame vipra prasādaṁ kartumarhasi ,
bhūmau nipatamānāyāḥ śaraṇaṁ bhava me'nagha.
15. strī uvāca | śirasā praṇame vipra prasādam kartum
arhasi | bhūmau nipatamānāyāḥ śaraṇam bhava me anagha
15. strī uvāca vipra śirasā praṇame prasādam kartum
arhasi anagha bhūmau nipatamānāyāḥ me śaraṇam bhava
15. The woman said: "O Brahmin, I bow down with my head. You should show favor. O sinless one, be a refuge for me, who am falling to the ground."
यदि वा दोषजातं त्वं परदारेषु पश्यसि ।
आत्मानं स्पर्शयाम्यद्य पाणिं गृह्णीष्व मे द्विज ॥१६॥
16. yadi vā doṣajātaṁ tvaṁ paradāreṣu paśyasi ,
ātmānaṁ sparśayāmyadya pāṇiṁ gṛhṇīṣva me dvija.
16. yadi vā doṣajātam tvam paradāreṣu paśyasi
ātmānam sparśayāmi adya pāṇim gṛhṇīṣva me dvija
16. tvam paradāreṣu doṣajātam paśyasi yadi vā adya
ātmānam me sparśayāmi dvija me pāṇim gṛhṇīṣva
16. If you see any fault in other men's wives, then I offer myself to you today. Take my hand, O brahmin (dvija).
न दोषो भविता चैव सत्येनैतद्ब्रवीम्यहम् ।
स्वतन्त्रां मां विजानीहि योऽधर्मः सोऽस्तु वै मयि ॥१७॥
17. na doṣo bhavitā caiva satyenaitadbravīmyaham ,
svatantrāṁ māṁ vijānīhi yo'dharmaḥ so'stu vai mayi.
17. na doṣaḥ bhavitā ca eva satyena etat bravīmi aham
svatantrām mām vijānīhi yaḥ adharmaḥ saḥ astu vai mayi
17. doṣaḥ na bhavitā ca eva aham etat satyena bravīmi mām
svatantrām vijānīhi yaḥ adharmaḥ saḥ vai mayi astu
17. Indeed, there will be no fault, and this I say truly. Know me to be independent. Whatever unrighteousness (adharma) exists, let that be upon me.
अष्टावक्र उवाच ।
स्वतन्त्रा त्वं कथं भद्रे ब्रूहि कारणमत्र वै ।
नास्ति लोके हि काचित्स्त्री या वै स्वातन्त्र्यमर्हति ॥१८॥
18. aṣṭāvakra uvāca ,
svatantrā tvaṁ kathaṁ bhadre brūhi kāraṇamatra vai ,
nāsti loke hi kācitstrī yā vai svātantryamarhati.
18. aṣṭāvakra uvāca svatantrā tvam katham bhadre brūhi kāraṇam
atra vai na asti loke hi kācit strī yā vai svātantryam arhati
18. aṣṭāvakra uvāca bhadre tvam katham svatantrā atra kāraṇam
brūhi vai hi loke kācit strī na asti yā vai svātantryam arhati
18. Aṣṭāvakra said: 'How are you independent, O gentle lady? Tell me the reason for this. For there is indeed no woman in the world who truly deserves independence.'
पिता रक्षति कौमारे भर्ता रक्षति यौवने ।
पुत्राश्च स्थविरीभावे न स्त्री स्वातन्त्र्यमर्हति ॥१९॥
19. pitā rakṣati kaumāre bhartā rakṣati yauvane ,
putrāśca sthavirībhāve na strī svātantryamarhati.
19. pitā rakṣati kaumāre bhartā rakṣati yauvane putrāḥ
ca sthavirībhāve na strī svātantryam arhati
19. pitā kaumāre rakṣati bhartā yauvane rakṣati ca
putrāḥ sthavirībhāve na strī svātantryam arhati
19. A father protects a woman in her childhood, a husband protects her in her youth, and sons protect her in old age. A woman does not deserve independence.
स्त्र्युवाच ।
कौमारं ब्रह्मचर्यं मे कन्यैवास्मि न संशयः ।
कुरु मा विमतिं विप्र श्रद्धां विजहि मा मम ॥२०॥
20. stryuvāca ,
kaumāraṁ brahmacaryaṁ me kanyaivāsmi na saṁśayaḥ ,
kuru mā vimatiṁ vipra śraddhāṁ vijahi mā mama.
20. strī uvāca | kaumāraṃ brahmacaryaṃ me kanyā eva asmi na
saṃśayaḥ | kuru mā vimatiṃ vipra śraddhāṃ vijahi mā mama
20. strī uvāca me kaumāraṃ brahmacaryaṃ kanyā eva asmi na
saṃśayaḥ vipra mā vimatiṃ kuru mama śraddhāṃ mā vijahi
20. The woman said: 'My celibacy (brahmacarya) is like that of a young maiden; I am indeed a virgin, there is no doubt. O brahmin, do not entertain any doubts, and do not abandon your faith (śraddhā) in me.'
अष्टावक्र उवाच ।
यथा मम तथा तुभ्यं यथा तव तथा मम ।
जिज्ञासेयमृषेस्तस्य विघ्नः सत्यं नु किं भवेत् ॥२१॥
21. aṣṭāvakra uvāca ,
yathā mama tathā tubhyaṁ yathā tava tathā mama ,
jijñāseyamṛṣestasya vighnaḥ satyaṁ nu kiṁ bhavet.
21. aṣṭāvakra uvāca | yathā mama tathā tubhyaṃ yathā tava tathā
mama | jijñāsā iyam ṛṣeḥ tasya vighnaḥ satyaṃ nu kiṃ bhavet
21. aṣṭāvakra uvāca yathā mama tathā tubhyaṃ yathā tava tathā
mama ṛṣeḥ tasya iyam jijñāsā satyaṃ nu kiṃ vighnaḥ bhavet
21. Aṣṭāvakra said: 'What is true for me is true for you, and what is true for you is true for me. What obstacle, pray tell, can this inquiry of that sage truly pose?'
आश्चर्यं परमं हीदं किं नु श्रेयो हि मे भवेत् ।
दिव्याभरणवस्त्रा हि कन्येयं मामुपस्थिता ॥२२॥
22. āścaryaṁ paramaṁ hīdaṁ kiṁ nu śreyo hi me bhavet ,
divyābharaṇavastrā hi kanyeyaṁ māmupasthitā.
22. āścaryaṃ paramaṃ hi idaṃ kiṃ nu śreyaḥ hi me bhavet
| divya ābharaṇa vastrā hi kanyā iyam mām upasthitā
22. hi idaṃ paramaṃ āścaryaṃ hi me kiṃ nu śreyaḥ bhavet
hi iyam divya ābharaṇa vastrā kanyā mām upasthitā
22. This is truly a supreme wonder! What benefit (śreyaḥ) could there possibly be for me? Indeed, this maiden, adorned with divine ornaments and clothes, has appeared before me.
किं त्वस्याः परमं रूपं जीर्णमासीत्कथं पुनः ।
कन्यारूपमिहाद्यैव किमिहात्रोत्तरं भवेत् ॥२३॥
23. kiṁ tvasyāḥ paramaṁ rūpaṁ jīrṇamāsītkathaṁ punaḥ ,
kanyārūpamihādyaiva kimihātrottaraṁ bhavet.
23. kiṃ tu asyāḥ paramaṃ rūpaṃ jīrṇaṃ āsīt kathaṃ punaḥ |
kanyā rūpam iha adya eva kiṃ iha atra uttaraṃ bhavet
23. kiṃ tu asyāḥ paramaṃ rūpaṃ kathaṃ jīrṇaṃ āsīt punaḥ
iha adya eva kanyārūpam iha atra kiṃ uttaraṃ bhavet
23. But how could her excellent form have been old and worn out, and then become a maiden's form just today, right here? What answer can there be to this mystery here?
यथा परं शक्तिधृतेर्न व्युत्थास्ये कथंचन ।
न रोचये हि व्युत्थानं धृत्यैवं साधयाम्यहम् ॥२४॥
24. yathā paraṁ śaktidhṛterna vyutthāsye kathaṁcana ,
na rocaye hi vyutthānaṁ dhṛtyaivaṁ sādhayāmyaham.
24. yathā param śaktidhṛteḥ na vyutthāsye kathaṃcana
na rocaye hi vyutthānam dhṛtyā evam sādhayāmi aham
24. aham param śaktidhṛteḥ na kathaṃcana vyutthāsye
hi vyutthānam na rocaye evam dhṛtyā sādhayāmi
24. I will certainly not deviate in any way from my utmost firmness of resolve. Indeed, I do not approve of any deviation, and thus I accomplish my objectives through resolve.
