ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
सुभगे पञ्चहोतॄणां विधानमिह यादृशम् ॥१॥
1. brāhmaṇa uvāca ,
atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam ,
subhage pañcahotṝṇāṁ vidhānamiha yādṛśam.

1. The brahmin said: "In this regard, they also cite this ancient narrative (itihāsa), O beautiful one, explaining how the procedure (vidhāna) of the five ritualists (pañcahotṛ) operates here."
प्राणापानावुदानश्च समानो व्यान एव च ।
पञ्चहोतॄनथैतान्वै परं भावं विदुर्बुधाः ॥२॥
2. prāṇāpānāvudānaśca samāno vyāna eva ca ,
pañcahotṝnathaitānvai paraṁ bhāvaṁ vidurbudhāḥ.

2. Prāṇa, Apāna, Udāna, Samāna, and Vyāna - these (five vital breaths) are indeed known by the wise as the five ritualists (pañcahotṛ), and as the supreme state (parā bhāva).
ब्राह्मण्युवाच ।
स्वभावात्सप्त होतार इति ते पूर्विका मतिः ।
यथा वै पञ्च होतारः परो भावस्तथोच्यताम् ॥३॥
3. brāhmaṇyuvāca ,
svabhāvātsapta hotāra iti te pūrvikā matiḥ ,
yathā vai pañca hotāraḥ paro bhāvastathocyatām.
3. brāhmaṇī uvāca svabhāvāt sapta hotāraḥ iti te pūrvikā
matiḥ yathā vai pañca hotāraḥ paraḥ bhāvaḥ tathā ucyatām

3. The brahmin woman said: "Your previous understanding (mati) was, 'There are seven ritualists (hotṛ) by their intrinsic nature (svabhāva).' Therefore, please explain how the five ritualists are indeed the supreme state (parā bhāva)."
ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
प्राणेन संभृतो वायुरपानो जायते ततः ।
अपाने संभृतो वायुस्ततो व्यानः प्रवर्तते ॥४॥
4. brāhmaṇa uvāca ,
prāṇena saṁbhṛto vāyurapāno jāyate tataḥ ,
apāne saṁbhṛto vāyustato vyānaḥ pravartate.
4. brāhmaṇa uvāca prāṇena saṃbhṛtaḥ vāyuḥ apānaḥ jāyate
tataḥ apāne saṃbhṛtaḥ vāyuḥ tataḥ vyānaḥ pravartate
4. The Brahmin said: "The air, sustained by the upward moving vital breath (prāṇa), then becomes the downward moving breath (apāna). The air, sustained within the downward moving breath (apāna), then operates as the pervasive breath (vyāna)."
व्यानेन संभृतो वायुस्ततोदानः प्रवर्तते ।
उदाने संभृतो वायुः समानः संप्रवर्तते ॥५॥
5. vyānena saṁbhṛto vāyustatodānaḥ pravartate ,
udāne saṁbhṛto vāyuḥ samānaḥ saṁpravartate.

udāne saṃbhṛtaḥ vāyuḥ samānaḥ saṃpravartate
5. The air, sustained by the pervasive breath (vyāna), then operates as the upward moving breath (udāna). The air, sustained within the upward moving breath (udāna), then functions as the balancing breath (samāna).
तेऽपृच्छन्त पुरा गत्वा पूर्वजातं प्रजापतिम् ।
यो नो ज्येष्ठस्तमाचक्ष्व स नः श्रेष्ठो भविष्यति ॥६॥
6. te'pṛcchanta purā gatvā pūrvajātaṁ prajāpatim ,
yo no jyeṣṭhastamācakṣva sa naḥ śreṣṭho bhaviṣyati.
6. te apṛcchanta purā gatvā pūrvajātam prajāpatim yaḥ
naḥ jyeṣṭhaḥ tam ācakṣva saḥ naḥ śreṣṭhaḥ bhaviṣyati
6. Having previously gone, they asked the primeval (prajāpati), the Lord of creatures: 'Declare to us who among us is the eldest, for he shall be the best among us.'
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
यस्मिन्प्रलीने प्रलयं व्रजन्ति सर्वे प्राणाः प्राणभृतां शरीरे ।
यस्मिन्प्रचीर्णे च पुनश्चरन्ति स वै श्रेष्ठो गच्छत यत्र कामः ॥७॥
7. brahmovāca ,
yasminpralīne pralayaṁ vrajanti; sarve prāṇāḥ prāṇabhṛtāṁ śarīre ,
yasminpracīrṇe ca punaścaranti; sa vai śreṣṭho gacchata yatra kāmaḥ.
7. brahmā uvāca yasmin pralīne pralayam
vrajanti sarve prāṇāḥ prāṇabhṛtām śarīre
yasmin pracīrṇe ca punaḥ caranti
saḥ vai śreṣṭhaḥ gacchata yatra kāmaḥ
7. Brahma said: 'The one in whom all the vital breaths (prāṇa) within the bodies of living beings experience dissolution (pralaya) when he (the chief life force) ceases to function, and in whom they again become active when he functions – he is indeed the best. Go, wherever your inclination leads you.'
प्राण उवाच ।
मयि प्रलीने प्रलयं व्रजन्ति सर्वे प्राणाः प्राणभृतां शरीरे ।
मयि प्रचीर्णे च पुनश्चरन्ति श्रेष्ठो ह्यहं पश्यत मां प्रलीनम् ॥८॥
8. prāṇa uvāca ,
mayi pralīne pralayaṁ vrajanti; sarve prāṇāḥ prāṇabhṛtāṁ śarīre ,
mayi pracīrṇe ca punaścaranti; śreṣṭho hyahaṁ paśyata māṁ pralīnam.

8. The vital breath (prāṇa) said: 'When I am absorbed, all the vital functions (prāṇas) in the bodies of living beings cease. And when I resume my activity, they become active again. Indeed, I am the foremost; behold me when I am absorbed.'
ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
प्राणः प्रलीयत ततः पुनश्च प्रचचार ह ।
समानश्चाप्युदानश्च वचोऽब्रूतां ततः शुभे ॥९॥
9. brāhmaṇa uvāca ,
prāṇaḥ pralīyata tataḥ punaśca pracacāra ha ,
samānaścāpyudānaśca vaco'brūtāṁ tataḥ śubhe.

9. The brahmin said: 'The vital breath (prāṇa) was absorbed, and then it became active again. Thereupon, O auspicious one, Samāna and Udāna also spoke these words.'
न त्वं सर्वमिदं व्याप्य तिष्ठसीह यथा वयम् ।
न त्वं श्रेष्ठोऽसि नः प्राण अपानो हि वशे तव ।
प्रचचार पुनः प्राणस्तमपानोऽभ्यभाषत ॥१०॥
10. na tvaṁ sarvamidaṁ vyāpya tiṣṭhasīha yathā vayam ,
na tvaṁ śreṣṭho'si naḥ prāṇa apāno hi vaśe tava ,
pracacāra punaḥ prāṇastamapāno'bhyabhāṣata.
10. na tvam sarvam idam vyāpya tiṣṭhasi iha
yathā vayam | na tvam śreṣṭhaḥ asi
naḥ prāṇa apānaḥ hi vaśe tava | pracacāra
punaḥ prāṇaḥ tam apānaḥ abhyabhāṣata
10. tvam sarvam idam vyāpya iha yathā vayam
na tiṣṭhasi naḥ prāṇa tvam śreṣṭhaḥ
na asi hi tava vaśe apānaḥ punaḥ
prāṇaḥ pracacāra apānaḥ tam abhyabhāṣata
10. You do not pervade all this and exist here as we do. You are not the foremost among us, O vital breath (prāṇa). Indeed, Apāna is under your control. The vital breath (prāṇa) moved again, and Apāna addressed him.
मयि प्रलीने प्रलयं व्रजन्ति सर्वे प्राणाः प्राणभृतां शरीरे ।
मयि प्रचीर्णे च पुनश्चरन्ति श्रेष्ठो ह्यहं पश्यत मां प्रलीनम् ॥११॥
11. mayi pralīne pralayaṁ vrajanti; sarve prāṇāḥ prāṇabhṛtāṁ śarīre ,
mayi pracīrṇe ca punaścaranti; śreṣṭho hyahaṁ paśyata māṁ pralīnam.

11. When I am absorbed, all the vital functions (prāṇas) in the bodies of living beings cease. And when I resume my activity, they become active again. Indeed, I am the foremost; behold me when I am absorbed.
व्यानश्च तमुदानश्च भाषमाणमथोचतुः ।
अपान न त्वं श्रेष्ठोऽसि प्राणो हि वशगस्तव ॥१२॥
12. vyānaśca tamudānaśca bhāṣamāṇamathocatuḥ ,
apāna na tvaṁ śreṣṭho'si prāṇo hi vaśagastava.
12. vyānaḥ ca tam udānaḥ ca bhāṣamāṇam atha ūcatuḥ |
apāna na tvam śreṣṭhaḥ asi prāṇaḥ hi vaśagaḥ tava
12. vyānaḥ ca udānaḥ ca atha tam bhāṣamāṇam ūcatuḥ apāna,
tvam na śreṣṭhaḥ asi,
hi prāṇaḥ tava vaśagaḥ
12. Vyana and Udana then said to him (Apana), while he was speaking, 'O Apana, you are not the best, for the vital breath (prāṇa) is indeed under your control.'
अपानः प्रचचाराथ व्यानस्तं पुनरब्रवीत् ।
श्रेष्ठोऽहमस्मि सर्वेषां श्रूयतां येन हेतुना ॥१३॥
13. apānaḥ pracacārātha vyānastaṁ punarabravīt ,
śreṣṭho'hamasmi sarveṣāṁ śrūyatāṁ yena hetunā.
13. apānaḥ pracacāra atha vyānaḥ tam punaḥ abravīt |
śreṣṭhaḥ aham asmi sarveṣām śrūyatām yena hetunā
13. apānaḥ atha pracacāra vyānaḥ punaḥ tam abravīt: "aham sarveṣām śreṣṭhaḥ asmi; yena hetunā (etat) śrūyatām.
"
13. Apana then departed. Vyana, in turn, said to him, 'I am the best of all; listen to the reason why.'
मयि प्रलीने प्रलयं व्रजन्ति सर्वे प्राणाः प्राणभृतां शरीरे ।
मयि प्रचीर्णे च पुनश्चरन्ति श्रेष्ठो ह्यहं पश्यत मां प्रलीनम् ॥१४॥
14. mayi pralīne pralayaṁ vrajanti; sarve prāṇāḥ prāṇabhṛtāṁ śarīre ,
mayi pracīrṇe ca punaścaranti; śreṣṭho hyahaṁ paśyata māṁ pralīnam.
14. mayi pralīne pralayam vrajanti

mayi pracīrṇe ca punaḥ caranti
śreṣṭhaḥ hi aham paśyata mām pralīnam

aham śreṣṭhaḥ mām pralīnam paśyata
14. When I (Vyana) cease, all vital airs (prāṇas) in the body of living beings attain cessation. And when I circulate again, they function again. I am indeed the best! Behold me when I have ceased!
प्रालीयत ततो व्यानः पुनश्च प्रचचार ह ।
प्राणापानावुदानश्च समानश्च तमब्रुवन् ।
न त्वं श्रेष्ठोऽसि नो व्यान समानो हि वशे तव ॥१५॥
15. prālīyata tato vyānaḥ punaśca pracacāra ha ,
prāṇāpānāvudānaśca samānaśca tamabruvan ,
na tvaṁ śreṣṭho'si no vyāna samāno hi vaśe tava.
15. prālīyata tataḥ vyānaḥ punaḥ ca
pracacāra ha | prāṇāpānau udānaḥ ca samānaḥ
ca tam abruvan | na tvam śreṣṭhaḥ
asi naḥ vyāna samānaḥ hi vaśe tava
15. tataḥ vyānaḥ prālīyata,
ca punaḥ ha pracacāra prāṇāpānau ca udānaḥ ca samānaḥ ca tam abruvan: "o vyāna,
tvam na naḥ śreṣṭhaḥ asi,
hi samānaḥ tava vaśe.
"
15. Then Vyana ceased, and indeed, he functioned again. Prana, Apana, Udana, and Samana then said to him, 'O Vyana, you are not the best of us, for Samana is indeed under your control.'
प्रचचार पुनर्व्यानः समानः पुनरब्रवीत् ।
श्रेष्ठोऽहमस्मि सर्वेषां श्रूयतां येन हेतुना ॥१६॥
16. pracacāra punarvyānaḥ samānaḥ punarabravīt ,
śreṣṭho'hamasmi sarveṣāṁ śrūyatāṁ yena hetunā.
16. pracacāra punar vyānaḥ samānaḥ punar abravīt
śreṣṭhaḥ aham asmi sarveṣām śrūyatām yena hetunā
16. vyānaḥ punar pracacāra samānaḥ punar abravīt
aham sarveṣām śreṣṭhaḥ asmi yena hetunā śrūyatām
16. Vyāna circulated again, and Samāna spoke again: 'I am the most superior among all; let the reason for this be heard.'
मयि प्रलीने प्रलयं व्रजन्ति सर्वे प्राणाः प्राणभृतां शरीरे ।
मयि प्रचीर्णे च पुनश्चरन्ति श्रेष्ठो ह्यहं पश्यत मां प्रलीनम् ॥१७॥
17. mayi pralīne pralayaṁ vrajanti; sarve prāṇāḥ prāṇabhṛtāṁ śarīre ,
mayi pracīrṇe ca punaścaranti; śreṣṭho hyahaṁ paśyata māṁ pralīnam.

17. When I am absorbed, all the vital airs (prāṇa) in the bodies of living beings go to dissolution. And when I am again active, they too become active again. For I am the most superior; behold me absorbed!
ततः समानः प्रालिल्ये पुनश्च प्रचचार ह ।
प्राणापानावुदानश्च व्यानश्चैव तमब्रुवन् ।
समान न त्वं श्रेष्ठोऽसि व्यान एव वशे तव ॥१८॥
18. tataḥ samānaḥ prālilye punaśca pracacāra ha ,
prāṇāpānāvudānaśca vyānaścaiva tamabruvan ,
samāna na tvaṁ śreṣṭho'si vyāna eva vaśe tava.

pracacāra ha prāṇāpānau udānaḥ ca
vyānaḥ ca eva tam abruvan samāna na
tvam śreṣṭhaḥ asi vyāna eva vaśe tava

18. Then samāna (prāṇa) dissolved and indeed circulated again. Prāṇa, apāna, udāna, and vyāna then said to him: 'O Samāna, you are not the most superior; only vyāna is under your control.'
समानः प्रचचाराथ उदानस्तमुवाच ह ।
श्रेष्ठोऽहमस्मि सर्वेषां श्रूयतां येन हेतुना ॥१९॥
19. samānaḥ pracacārātha udānastamuvāca ha ,
śreṣṭho'hamasmi sarveṣāṁ śrūyatāṁ yena hetunā.
19. samānaḥ pracacāra atha udānaḥ tam uvāca ha
śreṣṭhaḥ aham asmi sarveṣām śrūyatām yena hetunā

19. Samāna then circulated. Thereupon, udāna (prāṇa) said to him: 'I am the most superior among all; let the reason for this be heard.'

20. When I (the chief vital breath) am absorbed, all vital breaths (prāṇa) in the bodies of living beings go to dissolution. And when I am again active, they move once more. Indeed, I am the most excellent; behold me even when absorbed.
ततः प्रालीयतोदानः पुनश्च प्रचचार ह ।
प्राणापानौ समानश्च व्यानश्चैव तमब्रुवन् ।
उदान न त्वं श्रेष्ठोऽसि व्यान एव वशे तव ॥२१॥
21. tataḥ prālīyatodānaḥ punaśca pracacāra ha ,
prāṇāpānau samānaśca vyānaścaiva tamabruvan ,
udāna na tvaṁ śreṣṭho'si vyāna eva vaśe tava.
21. tataḥ prālīyata udānaḥ punaḥ ca
pracacāra ha prāṇāpānau samānaḥ ca vyānaḥ
ca eva tam abruvan udāna na tvam
śreṣṭhaḥ asi vyānaḥ eva vaśe tava
21. tataḥ udānaḥ prālīyata punaḥ ca ha
pracacāra prāṇāpānau samānaḥ ca vyānaḥ
ca eva tam abruvan udāna tvam
śreṣṭhaḥ na asi vyānaḥ eva tava vaśe
21. Then Udāna became absorbed and indeed moved forth again. Prāṇa, Apāna, Samāna, and Vyāna said to him: "O Udāna, you are not the chief; Vyāna alone is under your control."
ततस्तानब्रवीद्ब्रह्मा समवेतान्प्रजापतिः ।
सर्वे श्रेष्ठा न वा श्रेष्ठाः सर्वे चान्योन्यधर्मिणः ।
सर्वे स्वविषये श्रेष्ठाः सर्वे चान्योन्यरक्षिणः ॥२२॥
22. tatastānabravīdbrahmā samavetānprajāpatiḥ ,
sarve śreṣṭhā na vā śreṣṭhāḥ sarve cānyonyadharmiṇaḥ ,
sarve svaviṣaye śreṣṭhāḥ sarve cānyonyarakṣiṇaḥ.
22. tataḥ tān abravīt brahmā samavetān
prajāpatiḥ sarve śreṣṭhāḥ na vā śreṣṭhāḥ
sarve ca anyonyadharmiṇaḥ sarve
svaviṣaye śreṣṭhāḥ sarve ca anyonyarakṣiṇaḥ
22. tataḥ brahmā prajāpatiḥ samavetān tān
abravīt sarve śreṣṭhāḥ na vā śreṣṭhāḥ
ca sarve anyonyadharmiṇaḥ sarve
svaviṣaye śreṣṭhāḥ ca sarve anyonyarakṣiṇaḥ
22. Then Brahmā, the lord of creatures (prajāpati), said to them, who were assembled: "Are all of you superior, or are none of you superior? All of you share each other's intrinsic nature (dharma). All are superior in their own sphere, and all protect one another."
एकः स्थिरश्चास्थिरश्च विशेषात्पञ्च वायवः ।
एक एव ममैवात्मा बहुधाप्युपचीयते ॥२३॥
23. ekaḥ sthiraścāsthiraśca viśeṣātpañca vāyavaḥ ,
eka eva mamaivātmā bahudhāpyupacīyate.
23. ekaḥ sthiraḥ ca asthiraḥ ca viśeṣāt pañca vāyavaḥ
ekaḥ eva mama eva ātmā bahudhā api upacīyate
23. ekaḥ sthiraḥ ca asthiraḥ ca viśeṣāt pañca vāyavaḥ
mama ekaḥ eva ātmā eva bahudhā api upacīyate
23. One (principle) is both stable and unstable, manifested specifically as the five vital airs. My own (ātman) is indeed one, yet it is augmented and manifests in many ways.
परस्परस्य सुहृदो भावयन्तः परस्परम् ।
स्वस्ति व्रजत भद्रं वो धारयध्वं परस्परम् ॥२४॥
24. parasparasya suhṛdo bhāvayantaḥ parasparam ,
svasti vrajata bhadraṁ vo dhārayadhvaṁ parasparam.

vrajata bhadram vaḥ dhārayadhvam parasparam

24. Cultivating mutual friendship, proceed with well-being; may auspiciousness be with you, and uphold each other.
