वैशंपायन उवाच ।
प्रबुद्धास्ते हिडिम्बाया रूपं दृष्ट्वातिमानुषम् ।
विस्मिताः पुरुषव्याघ्रा बभूवुः पृथया सह ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
prabuddhāste hiḍimbāyā rūpaṁ dṛṣṭvātimānuṣam ,
vismitāḥ puruṣavyāghrā babhūvuḥ pṛthayā saha.
1. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca prabuddhāḥ te hiḍimbāyāḥ rūpam dṛṣṭvā
atimānuṣam vismitāḥ puruṣavyāghrāḥ babhūvuḥ pṛthayā saha
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Those eminent men, having awakened and seen Hiḍimbā's superhuman form, became astonished along with Pṛthā (Kuntī).
ततः कुन्ती समीक्ष्यैनां विस्मिता रूपसंपदा ।
उवाच मधुरं वाक्यं सान्त्वपूर्वमिदं शनैः ॥२॥
2. tataḥ kuntī samīkṣyaināṁ vismitā rūpasaṁpadā ,
uvāca madhuraṁ vākyaṁ sāntvapūrvamidaṁ śanaiḥ.
2. tataḥ kuntī samīkṣya enām vismitā rūpasaṃpadā
uvāca madhuram vākyam sāntvapurvam idam śanaiḥ
2. Then Kuntī, having observed her closely and astonished by her abundant beauty, gently spoke these sweet and conciliatory words.
कस्य त्वं सुरगर्भाभे का चासि वरवर्णिनि ।
केन कार्येण सुश्रोणि कुतश्चागमनं तव ॥३॥
3. kasya tvaṁ suragarbhābhe kā cāsi varavarṇini ,
kena kāryeṇa suśroṇi kutaścāgamanaṁ tava.
3. kasya tvam suragarbhābhe kā ca asi varavarṇini
kena kāryeṇa suśroṇi kutaḥ ca āgamanam tava
3. Whose child are you, O lady radiant like a celestial being? And who are you, O fair-complexioned one? For what purpose have you come, O beautiful-hipped lady, and from where is your arrival?
यदि वास्य वनस्यासि देवता यदि वाप्सराः ।
आचक्ष्व मम तत्सर्वं किमर्थं चेह तिष्ठसि ॥४॥
4. yadi vāsya vanasyāsi devatā yadi vāpsarāḥ ,
ācakṣva mama tatsarvaṁ kimarthaṁ ceha tiṣṭhasi.
4. yadi vā asya vanasya asi devatā yadi vā apsarāḥ
ācakṣva mama tat sarvam kimartham ca iha tiṣṭhasi
4. Whether you are a deity of this forest or an apsarā, tell me all of that and for what purpose you remain here.
हिडिम्बोवाच ।
यदेतत्पश्यसि वनं नीलमेघनिभं महत् ।
निवासो राक्षसस्यैतद्धिडिम्बस्य ममैव च ॥५॥
5. hiḍimbovāca ,
yadetatpaśyasi vanaṁ nīlameghanibhaṁ mahat ,
nivāso rākṣasasyaitaddhiḍimbasya mamaiva ca.
5. hiḍimbaḥ uvāca yat etat paśyasi vanam nīlameghanibham
mahat nivāsaḥ rākṣasasya etat hiḍimbasya mama eva ca
5. Hiḍimbā said: "This vast forest, which you see resembling a dark cloud, is the dwelling place of the demon Hiḍimba and also of me."
तस्य मां राक्षसेन्द्रस्य भगिनीं विद्धि भामिनि ।
भ्रात्रा संप्रेषितामार्ये त्वां सपुत्रां जिघांसता ॥६॥
6. tasya māṁ rākṣasendrasya bhaginīṁ viddhi bhāmini ,
bhrātrā saṁpreṣitāmārye tvāṁ saputrāṁ jighāṁsatā.
6. tasya mām rākṣasendrasya bhaginīm viddhi bhāmini
bhrātrā sampreṣitām ārye tvām saputrām jighāṃsatā
6. O beautiful lady (bhāmini), know me to be the sister of that lord of demons. O noble lady (ārye), I have been sent by my brother, who desires to kill you and your son.
क्रूरबुद्धेरहं तस्य वचनादागता इह ।
अद्राक्षं हेमवर्णाभं तव पुत्रं महौजसम् ॥७॥
7. krūrabuddherahaṁ tasya vacanādāgatā iha ,
adrākṣaṁ hemavarṇābhaṁ tava putraṁ mahaujasam.
7. krūrabuddheḥ aham tasya vacanāt āgatā iha
adrākṣam hemavarṇābham tava putram mahaujasam
7. I have come here at the command of that cruel-minded one. Then I saw your son, who shines with a golden hue and possesses great energy.
ततोऽहं सर्वभूतानां भावे विचरता शुभे ।
चोदिता तव पुत्रस्य मन्मथेन वशानुगा ॥८॥
8. tato'haṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ bhāve vicaratā śubhe ,
coditā tava putrasya manmathena vaśānugā.
8. tataḥ aham sarvabhūtānām bhāve vicaratā śubhe
coditā tava putrasya manmathena vaśānugā
8. O beautiful lady (śubhe), as I was wandering among all beings (bhāva), I was then compelled by the god of love (manmatha) and became subservient to your son.
ततो वृतो मया भर्ता तव पुत्रो महाबलः ।
अपनेतुं च यतितो न चैव शकितो मया ॥९॥
9. tato vṛto mayā bhartā tava putro mahābalaḥ ,
apanetuṁ ca yatito na caiva śakito mayā.
9. tataḥ vṛtaḥ mayā bhartā tava putraḥ mahābalaḥ
apanetuṃ ca yatitaḥ na ca eva śakitaḥ mayā
9. Then, your immensely powerful son was chosen by me as my husband. I tried to take him away, but I was simply unable to do so.
चिरायमाणां मां ज्ञात्वा ततः स पुरुषादकः ।
स्वयमेवागतो हन्तुमिमान्सर्वांस्तवात्मजान् ॥१०॥
10. cirāyamāṇāṁ māṁ jñātvā tataḥ sa puruṣādakaḥ ,
svayamevāgato hantumimānsarvāṁstavātmajān.
10. cirāyamāṇām mām jñātvā tataḥ sa puruṣādakaḥ
svayam eva āgataḥ hantuṃ imān sarvān tava ātmajān
10. Then, realizing that I was delaying, that man-eater himself came to kill all these sons of yours.
स तेन मम कान्तेन तव पुत्रेण धीमता ।
बलादितो विनिष्पिष्य व्यपकृष्टो महात्मना ॥११॥
11. sa tena mama kāntena tava putreṇa dhīmatā ,
balādito viniṣpiṣya vyapakṛṣṭo mahātmanā.
11. sa tena mama kāntena tava putreṇa dhīmatā
balāt itaḥ viniṣpiṣya vyapakṛṣṭaḥ mahātmanā
11. That man-eater was then crushed by force from here by my beloved, your wise son, and dragged away by that great-souled one.
विकर्षन्तौ महावेगौ गर्जमानौ परस्परम् ।
पश्यध्वं युधि विक्रान्तावेतौ तौ नरराक्षसौ ॥१२॥
12. vikarṣantau mahāvegau garjamānau parasparam ,
paśyadhvaṁ yudhi vikrāntāvetau tau nararākṣasau.

paśyadhvaṃ yudhi vikrāntau etau tau nararākṣasau
12. Behold these two man-demons, dragging each other with great speed, roaring at one another, and showing valor in battle!
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तस्याः श्रुत्वैव वचनमुत्पपात युधिष्ठिरः ।
अर्जुनो नकुलश्चैव सहदेवश्च वीर्यवान् ॥१३॥
13. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tasyāḥ śrutvaiva vacanamutpapāta yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
arjuno nakulaścaiva sahadevaśca vīryavān.
13. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tasyāḥ śrutvā eva vacanam utpapāta
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ arjunaḥ nakulaḥ ca eva sahadevaḥ ca vīryavān
13. Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard her words, Yudhiṣṭhira sprang up, and so did Arjuna, Nakula, and the powerful Sahadeva.
तौ ते ददृशुरासक्तौ विकर्षन्तौ परस्परम् ।
काङ्क्षमाणौ जयं चैव सिंहाविव रणोत्कटौ ॥१४॥
14. tau te dadṛśurāsaktau vikarṣantau parasparam ,
kāṅkṣamāṇau jayaṁ caiva siṁhāviva raṇotkaṭau.
14. tau te dadṛśuḥ āsaktau vikarṣantau parasparam
kāṅkṣamāṇau jayam ca eva siṃhā iva raṇotkaṭau
14. They saw those two, fiercely engaged in pulling each other, eagerly desiring victory, just like two lions furious in battle.
तावन्योन्यं समाश्लिष्य विकर्षन्तौ परस्परम् ।
दावाग्निधूमसदृशं चक्रतुः पार्थिवं रजः ॥१५॥
15. tāvanyonyaṁ samāśliṣya vikarṣantau parasparam ,
dāvāgnidhūmasadṛśaṁ cakratuḥ pārthivaṁ rajaḥ.
15. tau anyonyam samāśliṣya vikarṣantau parasparam
dāvāgnidhūmasadṛśam cakratuḥ pārthivam rajaḥ
15. Embracing each other, those two pulled one another, raising terrestrial dust that resembled the smoke of a forest fire.
वसुधारेणुसंवीतौ वसुधाधरसंनिभौ ।
विभ्राजेतां यथा शैलौ नीहारेणाभिसंवृतौ ॥१६॥
16. vasudhāreṇusaṁvītau vasudhādharasaṁnibhau ,
vibhrājetāṁ yathā śailau nīhāreṇābhisaṁvṛtau.
16. vasudhāreṇusaṃvītau vasudhādharasaṃnibhau
vibhrājetām yathā śailau nīhāreṇa abhisaṃvṛtau
16. Covered with terrestrial dust, those two appeared like mountains; they shone just like two peaks completely enveloped by mist.
राक्षसेन तथा भीमं क्लिश्यमानं निरीक्ष्य तु ।
उवाचेदं वचः पार्थः प्रहसञ्शनकैरिव ॥१७॥
17. rākṣasena tathā bhīmaṁ kliśyamānaṁ nirīkṣya tu ,
uvācedaṁ vacaḥ pārthaḥ prahasañśanakairiva.
17. rākṣasena tathā bhīmam kliśyamānam nirīkṣya tu
uvāca idam vacaḥ pārthaḥ prahasan śanakaiḥ iva
17. However, after seeing Bhīma thus being tormented by the Rākṣasa, Arjuna spoke these words, as if laughing gently.
भीम मा भैर्महाबाहो न त्वां बुध्यामहे वयम् ।
समेतं भीमरूपेण प्रसुप्ताः श्रमकर्शिताः ॥१८॥
18. bhīma mā bhairmahābāho na tvāṁ budhyāmahe vayam ,
sametaṁ bhīmarūpeṇa prasuptāḥ śramakarśitāḥ.
18. bhīma mā bhaiḥ mahābāho na tvām budhyāmahe vayam
sametam bhīmarūpeṇa prasuptāḥ śramakarśitāḥ
18. O Bhīma, O mighty-armed one, do not be afraid! We, having fallen asleep and worn out by fatigue, did not perceive you as being associated with such a terrible form.
साहाय्येऽस्मि स्थितः पार्थ योधयिष्यामि राक्षसम् ।
नकुलः सहदेवश्च मातरं गोपयिष्यतः ॥१९॥
19. sāhāyye'smi sthitaḥ pārtha yodhayiṣyāmi rākṣasam ,
nakulaḥ sahadevaśca mātaraṁ gopayiṣyataḥ.
19. sāhāyye asmin sthitaḥ pārtha yodhayiṣyāmi rākṣasam
nakulaḥ sahadevaḥ ca mātaram gopayiṣyataḥ
19. Pārtha, I will stand here to provide help and fight the demon (rākṣasa). Nakula and Sahadeva will protect mother.
भीम उवाच ।
उदासीनो निरीक्षस्व न कार्यः संभ्रमस्त्वया ।
न जात्वयं पुनर्जीवेन्मद्बाह्वन्तरमागतः ॥२०॥
20. bhīma uvāca ,
udāsīno nirīkṣasva na kāryaḥ saṁbhramastvayā ,
na jātvayaṁ punarjīvenmadbāhvantaramāgataḥ.
20. bhīmaḥ uvāca udāsīnaḥ nirīkṣasva na kāryaḥ saṃbhramaḥ
tvayā na jātu ayam punaḥ jīvet madbāhvantaram āgataḥ
20. Bhīma said: Remain indifferent and just watch; no haste should be made by you. He will certainly never live again once he has come within the grasp of my arms.
अर्जुन उवाच ।
किमनेन चिरं भीम जीवता पापरक्षसा ।
गन्तव्यं न चिरं स्थातुमिह शक्यमरिंदम ॥२१॥
21. arjuna uvāca ,
kimanena ciraṁ bhīma jīvatā pāparakṣasā ,
gantavyaṁ na ciraṁ sthātumiha śakyamariṁdama.
21. arjunaḥ uvāca kim anena ciram bhīma jīvatā pāparākṣasā
gantavyam na ciram sthātum iha śakyam ariṃdama
21. Arjuna said: Bhīma, what use is there in this sinful demon (rākṣasa) living long? It is not possible to stay here for long, O subduer of enemies.
पुरा संरज्यते प्राची पुरा संध्या प्रवर्तते ।
रौद्रे मुहूर्ते रक्षांसि प्रबलानि भवन्ति च ॥२२॥
22. purā saṁrajyate prācī purā saṁdhyā pravartate ,
raudre muhūrte rakṣāṁsi prabalāni bhavanti ca.
22. purā saṃrajyate prācī purā saṃdhyā pravartate
raudre muhūrte rakṣāṃsi prabalāni bhavanti ca
22. Before the East is fully reddened, and before twilight sets in, the rākṣasas become powerful in the fierce hour.
त्वरस्व भीम मा क्रीड जहि रक्षो विभीषणम् ।
पुरा विकुरुते मायां भुजयोः सारमर्पय ॥२३॥
23. tvarasva bhīma mā krīḍa jahi rakṣo vibhīṣaṇam ,
purā vikurute māyāṁ bhujayoḥ sāramarpaya.
23. tvarasva bhīma mā krīḍa jahi rakṣaḥ vibhīṣaṇam
purā vikurute māyām bhujayoḥ sāram arpay
23. Bhīma, hurry! Do not play! Slay this terrifying demon (rakṣas) before he creates (māyā) illusion. Apply the strength of your arms!
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
अर्जुनेनैवमुक्तस्तु भीमो भीमस्य रक्षसः ।
उत्क्षिप्याभ्रामयद्देहं तूर्णं गुणशताधिकम् ॥२४॥
24. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
arjunenaivamuktastu bhīmo bhīmasya rakṣasaḥ ,
utkṣipyābhrāmayaddehaṁ tūrṇaṁ guṇaśatādhikam.
24. vaiśampāyana uvāca | arjunena evam uktaḥ tu bhīmaḥ bhīmasya
rakṣasaḥ | utkṣipya abhrāmayat deham tūrṇam guṇaśatādhikam
24. Vaiśampāyana said: Indeed, thus addressed by Arjuna, Bhīma swiftly lifted and whirled the immensely powerful body of the formidable demon.
भीम उवाच ।
वृथामांसैर्वृथा पुष्टो वृथा वृद्धो वृथामतिः ।
वृथामरणमर्हस्त्वं वृथाद्य न भविष्यसि ॥२५॥
25. bhīma uvāca ,
vṛthāmāṁsairvṛthā puṣṭo vṛthā vṛddho vṛthāmatiḥ ,
vṛthāmaraṇamarhastvaṁ vṛthādya na bhaviṣyasi.
25. bhīma uvāca | vṛthā māṃsaiḥ vṛthā puṣṭaḥ vṛthā vṛddhaḥ vṛthā
matiḥ | vṛthā maraṇam arhaḥ tvam vṛthā adya na bhaviṣyasi
25. Bhīma said: Your flesh is grown in vain, you are fruitlessly nourished, fruitlessly aged, and possess a fruitless intellect. You deserve a meaningless death; today you will no longer exist in vain.
अर्जुन उवाच ।
अथ वा मन्यसे भारं त्वमिमं राक्षसं युधि ।
करोमि तव साहाय्यं शीघ्रमेव निहन्यताम् ॥२६॥
26. arjuna uvāca ,
atha vā manyase bhāraṁ tvamimaṁ rākṣasaṁ yudhi ,
karomi tava sāhāyyaṁ śīghrameva nihanyatām.
26. arjuna uvāca | atha vā manyase bhāram tvam imam rākṣasam
yudhi | karomi tava sāhāyyam śīghram eva nihanyatām
26. Arjuna said: Or if you consider this demon a burden in battle, I will certainly assist you; let him be killed swiftly.
अथ वाप्यहमेवैनं हनिष्यामि वृकोदर ।
कृतकर्मा परिश्रान्तः साधु तावदुपारम ॥२७॥
27. atha vāpyahamevainaṁ haniṣyāmi vṛkodara ,
kṛtakarmā pariśrāntaḥ sādhu tāvadupārama.
27. atha vā api aham eva enam haniṣyāmi vṛkodara
| kṛtakarmā pariśrāntaḥ sādhu tāvat upārama
27. Or, O Vṛkodara, I myself will kill him. You have accomplished the deed and are exhausted, so please cease for now.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा भीमसेनोऽत्यमर्षणः ।
निष्पिष्यैनं बलाद्भूमौ पशुमारममारयत् ॥२८॥
28. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā bhīmaseno'tyamarṣaṇaḥ ,
niṣpiṣyainaṁ balādbhūmau paśumāramamārayat.
28. vaiśampāyana uvāca | tasya tat vacanam śrutvā bhīmasenaḥ
atyamarṣaṇaḥ | niṣpiṣya enam balāt bhūmau paśumāram amārayat
28. Vaiśampāyana said: Hearing those words from Arjuna, Bhīmasena, filled with extreme wrath, crushed the demon forcibly on the ground and killed him like an animal.
स मार्यमाणो भीमेन ननाद विपुलं स्वनम् ।
पूरयंस्तद्वनं सर्वं जलार्द्र इव दुन्दुभिः ॥२९॥
29. sa māryamāṇo bhīmena nanāda vipulaṁ svanam ,
pūrayaṁstadvanaṁ sarvaṁ jalārdra iva dundubhiḥ.
29. saḥ māryamāṇaḥ bhīmena nanāda vipulam svanam
pūrayan tat vanam sarvam jalārdraḥ iva dundubhiḥ
29. He, being struck by Bhima, let out a tremendous roar that filled the entire forest, just like a water-soaked drum.
भुजाभ्यां योक्त्रयित्वा तं बलवान्पाण्डुनन्दनः ।
मध्ये भङ्क्त्वा स बलवान्हर्षयामास पाण्डवान् ॥३०॥
30. bhujābhyāṁ yoktrayitvā taṁ balavānpāṇḍunandanaḥ ,
madhye bhaṅktvā sa balavānharṣayāmāsa pāṇḍavān.
30. bhujābhyām yoktrayitvā tam balavān pāṇḍunandanaḥ
madhye bhaṅktvā saḥ balavān harṣayāmāsa pāṇḍavān
30. The powerful son of Pandu (Bhima), having bound him with his arms and broken him in two, then that powerful one delighted the Pandavas.
हिडिम्बं निहतं दृष्ट्वा संहृष्टास्ते तरस्विनः ।
अपूजयन्नरव्याघ्रं भीमसेनमरिंदमम् ॥३१॥
31. hiḍimbaṁ nihataṁ dṛṣṭvā saṁhṛṣṭāste tarasvinaḥ ,
apūjayannaravyāghraṁ bhīmasenamariṁdamam.
31. hiḍimbam nihatam dṛṣṭvā saṃhṛṣṭāḥ te tarasvinaḥ
apūjayan naravyāghram bhīmasenam arindamam
31. Seeing Hidimba slain, those powerful ones were greatly delighted. They honored Bhimasena, that tiger among men, the subjugator of enemies.
अभिपूज्य महात्मानं भीमं भीमपराक्रमम् ।
पुनरेवार्जुनो वाक्यमुवाचेदं वृकोदरम् ॥३२॥
32. abhipūjya mahātmānaṁ bhīmaṁ bhīmaparākramam ,
punarevārjuno vākyamuvācedaṁ vṛkodaram.
32. abhipūjya mahātmānam bhīmam bhīmaparākramam
punar eva arjunaḥ vākyam uvāca idam vṛkodaram
32. After honoring the great-souled Bhima, who possessed terrible prowess, Arjuna then spoke this statement to Vrikodara (Bhima).
नदूरे नगरं मन्ये वनादस्मादहं प्रभो ।
शीघ्रं गच्छाम भद्रं ते न नो विद्यात्सुयोधनः ॥३३॥
33. nadūre nagaraṁ manye vanādasmādahaṁ prabho ,
śīghraṁ gacchāma bhadraṁ te na no vidyātsuyodhanaḥ.
33. na dūre nagaram manye vanāt asmāt aham prabho
śīghram gacchāma bhadram te na naḥ vidyāt suyodhanaḥ
33. "O Lord, I think the city is not far from this forest. Let us go quickly; may all be well with you. Suyodhana must not discover our presence."
ततः सर्वे तथेत्युक्त्वा सह मात्रा परंतपाः ।
प्रययुः पुरुषव्याघ्रा हिडिम्बा चैव राक्षसी ॥३४॥
34. tataḥ sarve tathetyuktvā saha mātrā paraṁtapāḥ ,
prayayuḥ puruṣavyāghrā hiḍimbā caiva rākṣasī.
34. tataḥ sarve tathā iti uktvā saha mātrā paraṃtapāḥ
prayayuḥ puruṣavyāghrāḥ hiḍimbā ca eva rākṣasī
34. Then, all the tiger-like men, tormentors of foes, saying "So be it," departed with their mother, and the female demon (rākṣasī) Hiḍimbā also went.
