ततस्तृतीये दिवसे समे देशे व्यवस्थितः ।
प्रेषयामास मे राजन्प्राप्तोऽस्मीति महाव्रतः ॥१॥

1. Bhishma said: O king, thereafter, on the third day, the one of great vows, having settled in a level place, sent a message to me saying, 'I have arrived.'
तमागतमहं श्रुत्वा विषयान्तं महाबलम् ।
अभ्यगच्छं जवेनाशु प्रीत्या तेजोनिधिं प्रभुम् ॥२॥
2. tamāgatamahaṁ śrutvā viṣayāntaṁ mahābalam ,
abhyagacchaṁ javenāśu prītyā tejonidhiṁ prabhum.
2. tam āgatam aham śrutvā viṣayāntam mahābalam
abhyagaccham javena āśu prītyā tejonidhim prabhum
2. aham tam viṣayāntam āgatam mahābalam tejonidhim

2. Having heard that he, the very powerful lord and repository of splendor, had arrived at the border of the territory, I swiftly and affectionately went to him.
गां पुरस्कृत्य राजेन्द्र ब्राह्मणैः परिवारितः ।
ऋत्विग्भिर्देवकल्पैश्च तथैव च पुरोहितैः ॥३॥
3. gāṁ puraskṛtya rājendra brāhmaṇaiḥ parivāritaḥ ,
ṛtvigbhirdevakalpaiśca tathaiva ca purohitaiḥ.

ṛtvigbhiḥ devakalpaiḥ ca tathā eva ca purohitaiḥ

3. O king of kings, he was surrounded by Brahmins, by priests (ṛtvij) who were like gods, and likewise by family priests (purohita), with the cow placed at the forefront.
स मामभिगतं दृष्ट्वा जामदग्न्यः प्रतापवान् ।
प्रतिजग्राह तां पूजां वचनं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥४॥
4. sa māmabhigataṁ dṛṣṭvā jāmadagnyaḥ pratāpavān ,
pratijagrāha tāṁ pūjāṁ vacanaṁ cedamabravīt.
4. saḥ mām abhigatam dṛṣṭvā jāmadagnyaḥ pratāpavān
pratijagrāha tām pūjām vacanam ca idam abravīt
4. pratāpavān jāmadagnyaḥ mām abhigatam dṛṣṭvā

4. The mighty son of Jamadagni (jāmadagnya), seeing me arrive, accepted that honor and spoke these words.
भीष्म कां बुद्धिमास्थाय काशिराजसुता त्वया ।
अकामेयमिहानीता पुनश्चैव विसर्जिता ॥५॥
5. bhīṣma kāṁ buddhimāsthāya kāśirājasutā tvayā ,
akāmeyamihānītā punaścaiva visarjitā.
5. bhīṣma kām buddhim āsthāya kāśirājasutā tvayā
akāmā iyam iha ānītā punaḥ ca eva visarjitā

5. O Bhishma, adopting what intention (buddhi) did you bring this daughter of the King of Kashi here, an unwilling bride, and then again, indeed, release her?
विभ्रंशिता त्वया हीयं धर्मावाप्तेः परावरात् ।
परामृष्टां त्वया हीमां को हि गन्तुमिहार्हति ॥६॥
6. vibhraṁśitā tvayā hīyaṁ dharmāvāpteḥ parāvarāt ,
parāmṛṣṭāṁ tvayā hīmāṁ ko hi gantumihārhati.
6. vibhraṃśitā tvayā hi iyam dharmāvāpteḥ parāvarāt
parāmṛṣṭām tvayā hi imām kaḥ hi gantum iha arhati
6. hi tvayā iyam parāvarāt dharmāvāpteḥ vibhraṃśitā.
hi tvayā parāmṛṣṭām imām iha kaḥ hi gantum arhati?
6. Indeed, this girl has been deprived by you of her highest rightful position (dharma) attainment. Who, indeed, in this situation, would be able to approach (marry) this girl, whom you have sullied?
प्रत्याख्याता हि शाल्वेन त्वया नीतेति भारत ।
तस्मादिमां मन्नियोगात्प्रतिगृह्णीष्व भारत ॥७॥
7. pratyākhyātā hi śālvena tvayā nīteti bhārata ,
tasmādimāṁ manniyogātpratigṛhṇīṣva bhārata.
7. pratyākhyātā hi śālvena tvayā nītā iti bhārata
tasmāt imām manniyogāt pratigṛhṇīṣva bhārata
7. bhārata tvayā nītā iti śālvena pratyākhyātā hi
tasmāt bhārata manniyogāt imām pratigṛhṇīṣva
7. O Bhārata, she was indeed rejected by Śālva because you brought her to him. Therefore, O Bhārata, accept her at my command.
स्वधर्मं पुरुषव्याघ्र राजपुत्री लभत्वियम् ।
न युक्तमवमानोऽयं कर्तुं राज्ञा त्वयानघ ॥८॥
8. svadharmaṁ puruṣavyāghra rājaputrī labhatviyam ,
na yuktamavamāno'yaṁ kartuṁ rājñā tvayānagha.
8. svadharmam puruṣavyāghra rājaputrī labhatu iyam
na yuktam avamānaḥ ayam kartum rājñā tvayā anagha
8. puruṣavyāghra anagha iyam rājaputrī svadharmam
labhatu ayam avamānaḥ rājñā tvayā kartum na yuktam
8. O tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), let this princess attain her intrinsic nature (svadharma), her rightful destiny. O sinless one (anagha), it is not proper for this humiliation to be inflicted by a king like you.
ततस्तं नातिमनसं समुदीक्ष्याहमब्रुवम् ।
नाहमेनां पुनर्दद्यां भ्रात्रे ब्रह्मन्कथंचन ॥९॥
9. tatastaṁ nātimanasaṁ samudīkṣyāhamabruvam ,
nāhamenāṁ punardadyāṁ bhrātre brahmankathaṁcana.
9. tataḥ tam na atimanasam samudīkṣya aham abruvam na
aham enām punaḥ dadyām bhrātre brahman kathaṃcana
9. tataḥ aham tam na atimanasam samudīkṣya abruvam
brahman aham enām punaḥ bhrātre kathaṃcana na dadyām
9. Then, having observed him (Bhīṣma) to be displeased, I (Ambā) said, 'O Brahmin (brahman), I would never again give myself to my brother (Vicitravīrya).'
शाल्वस्याहमिति प्राह पुरा मामिह भार्गव ।
मया चैवाभ्यनुज्ञाता गता सौभपुरं प्रति ॥१०॥
10. śālvasyāhamiti prāha purā māmiha bhārgava ,
mayā caivābhyanujñātā gatā saubhapuraṁ prati.
10. śālvasya aham iti prāha purā mām iha bhārgava
mayā ca eva abhyanujñātā gatā saubhapuram prati
10. bhārgava purā iha (Ambā) aham śālvasya iti (Bhīṣma) mām
prāha ca mayā eva abhyanujñātā gatā saubhapuram prati
10. O Bhārgava, formerly, he (Bhīṣma) told me (Ambā) here, confirming, 'I (Ambā) belong to Śālva.' And indeed, having been permitted by him, I (Ambā) then departed for the city of Saubha.
न भयान्नाप्यनुक्रोशान्न लोभान्नार्थकाम्यया ।
क्षत्रधर्ममहं जह्यामिति मे व्रतमाहितम् ॥११॥
11. na bhayānnāpyanukrośānna lobhānnārthakāmyayā ,
kṣatradharmamahaṁ jahyāmiti me vratamāhitam.
11. na bhayāt na api anukrośāt na lobhāt na arthakāmyayā
kṣatradharmam aham jahyām iti me vratam āhitam
11. aham bhayāt na,
anukrośāt api na,
lobhāt na,
arthakāmyayā na kṣatradharmam jahyām.
iti me vratam āhitam.
11. Neither from fear, nor from compassion, nor from greed, nor from the desire for gain, would I abandon the intrinsic nature (dharma) of a warrior. This is the vow I have undertaken.
अथ मामब्रवीद्रामः क्रोधपर्याकुलेक्षणः ।
न करिष्यसि चेदेतद्वाक्यं मे कुरुपुंगव ॥१२॥
12. atha māmabravīdrāmaḥ krodhaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ ,
na kariṣyasi cedetadvākyaṁ me kurupuṁgava.
12. atha mām abravīt rāmaḥ krodhaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ
na kariṣyasi cet etat vākyam me kurupuṃgava
12. atha krodhaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ rāmaḥ mām abravīt : kurupuṃgava,
cet me etat vākyam na kariṣyasi
12. Then Rama, whose eyes were agitated by anger, said to me: 'If you, O chief of the Kurus (kurupuṅgava), do not carry out this command of mine...'
हनिष्यामि सहामात्यं त्वामद्येति पुनः पुनः ।
संरम्भादब्रवीद्रामः क्रोधपर्याकुलेक्षणः ॥१३॥
13. haniṣyāmi sahāmātyaṁ tvāmadyeti punaḥ punaḥ ,
saṁrambhādabravīdrāmaḥ krodhaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ.
13. haniṣyāmi saha amātyam tvām adya iti punaḥ punaḥ
saṃrambhāt abravīt rāmaḥ krodhaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ
13. adya tvām saha amātyam haniṣyāmi iti krodhaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ rāmaḥ saṃrambhāt punaḥ punaḥ abravīt.
13. 'I will kill you along with your ministers (amātya) today!' Rama, with eyes agitated by anger, spoke vehemently, repeating this threat.
तमहं गीर्भिरिष्टाभिः पुनः पुनररिंदमम् ।
अयाचं भृगुशार्दूलं न चैव प्रशशाम सः ॥१४॥
14. tamahaṁ gīrbhiriṣṭābhiḥ punaḥ punarariṁdamam ,
ayācaṁ bhṛguśārdūlaṁ na caiva praśaśāma saḥ.
14. tam aham gīrbhiḥ iṣṭābhiḥ punaḥ punaḥ ariṃdamam
ayācam bhṛguśārdūlam na ca eva praśasāma saḥ
14. aham punaḥ punaḥ iṣṭābhiḥ gīrbhiḥ tam ariṃdamam bhṛguśārdūlam ayācam.
ca eva saḥ na praśasāma.
14. I repeatedly entreated that subduer of enemies (ariṃdama), that tiger among the Bhrigus (bhṛguśārdūla), with pleasing words, but he did not calm down at all.
तमहं प्रणम्य शिरसा भूयो ब्राह्मणसत्तमम् ।
अब्रुवं कारणं किं तद्यत्त्वं योद्धुमिहेच्छसि ॥१५॥
15. tamahaṁ praṇamya śirasā bhūyo brāhmaṇasattamam ,
abruvaṁ kāraṇaṁ kiṁ tadyattvaṁ yoddhumihecchasi.
15. tam aham praṇamya śirasā bhūyaḥ brāhmaṇa-sattamam
abruvam kāraṇam kim tat yat tvam yoddhum iha icchasi
15. aham bhūyaḥ śirasā tam brāhmaṇa-sattamam praṇamya abruvam,
"tat kim kāraṇam yat tvam iha yoddhum icchasi?"
15. Again, I bowed my head to that best of brahmins and asked, "What is the reason that you wish to fight here?"
इष्वस्त्रं मम बालस्य भवतैव चतुर्विधम् ।
उपदिष्टं महाबाहो शिष्योऽस्मि तव भार्गव ॥१६॥
16. iṣvastraṁ mama bālasya bhavataiva caturvidham ,
upadiṣṭaṁ mahābāho śiṣyo'smi tava bhārgava.
16. iṣu-astram mama bālasya bhavatā eva caturvidham
upadiṣṭam mahābāho śiṣyaḥ asmi tava bhārgava
16. mahābāho bhārgava,
bhavatā eva bālasya mama caturvidham iṣu-astram upadiṣṭam.
tava śiṣyaḥ asmi.
16. O mighty-armed one, O Bhargava, you yourself taught me, a mere child, the four kinds of archery. I am your student.
ततो मामब्रवीद्रामः क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः ।
जानीषे मां गुरुं भीष्म न चेमां प्रतिगृह्णसे ।
सुतां काश्यस्य कौरव्य मत्प्रियार्थं महीपते ॥१७॥
17. tato māmabravīdrāmaḥ krodhasaṁraktalocanaḥ ,
jānīṣe māṁ guruṁ bhīṣma na cemāṁ pratigṛhṇase ,
sutāṁ kāśyasya kauravya matpriyārthaṁ mahīpate.
17. tataḥ mām abravīt rāmaḥ krodha-saṃrakta-locanaḥ
jānīṣe mām gurum bhīṣma
na cet imām pratigṛhṇase sutām kāśyasya
kauravya mat-priya-artham mahīpate
17. tataḥ krodha-saṃrakta-locanaḥ rāmaḥ mām abravīt,
"bhīṣma,
mām gurum jānīṣe? cet na imām kāśyasya sutām mat-priya-artham pratigṛhṇase,
he kauravya mahīpate.
"
17. Then Rama, his eyes red with rage, spoke to me, "Bhishma, do you consider me your teacher (guru)? If you do not accept this daughter of the King of Kashi, O Kaurava, O ruler of the earth, for my sake."
न हि ते विद्यते शान्तिरन्यथा कुरुनन्दन ।
गृहाणेमां महाबाहो रक्षस्व कुलमात्मनः ।
त्वया विभ्रंशिता हीयं भर्तारं नाभिगच्छति ॥१८॥
18. na hi te vidyate śāntiranyathā kurunandana ,
gṛhāṇemāṁ mahābāho rakṣasva kulamātmanaḥ ,
tvayā vibhraṁśitā hīyaṁ bhartāraṁ nābhigacchati.
18. na hi te vidyate śāntiḥ anyathā
kuru-nandana gṛhāṇa imām mahābāho rakṣasva
kulam ātmanaḥ tvayā vibhraṃśitā
hi iyam bhartāram na abhigacchati
18. he kuru-nandana,
hi anyathā te śāntiḥ na vidyate.
he mahābāho,
imām gṛhāṇa,
ātmanaḥ kulam rakṣasva.
hi tvayā vibhraṃśitā iyam bhartāram na abhigacchati.
18. Indeed, O delight of the Kurus, you will find no peace (śānti) otherwise. O mighty-armed one, take her and protect your own lineage (kula). For she, having been abandoned by you, is unable to find a husband.
तथा ब्रुवन्तं तमहं रामं परपुरंजयम् ।
नैतदेवं पुनर्भावि ब्रह्मर्षे किं श्रमेण ते ॥१९॥
19. tathā bruvantaṁ tamahaṁ rāmaṁ parapuraṁjayam ,
naitadevaṁ punarbhāvi brahmarṣe kiṁ śrameṇa te.
19. tathā bruvantam tam aham rāmam parapurañjayam na
etat evam punar bhāvi brahmarṣe kim śrameṇa te
19. aham parapurañjayam rāmam tathā bruvantam tam na
etat evam punar bhāvi brahmarṣe te śrameṇa kim
19. I said to Rāma, the conqueror of enemy cities, who was speaking in that manner: 'This will not happen again. O great sage (brahmarṣi), what is the point of your exertion?'
गुरुत्वं त्वयि संप्रेक्ष्य जामदग्न्य पुरातनम् ।
प्रसादये त्वां भगवंस्त्यक्तैषा हि पुरा मया ॥२०॥
20. gurutvaṁ tvayi saṁprekṣya jāmadagnya purātanam ,
prasādaye tvāṁ bhagavaṁstyaktaiṣā hi purā mayā.
20. guruvtam tvayi samprekṣya jāmadagnya purātanam
prasādaye tvām bhagavan tyaktā eṣā hi purā mayā
20. jāmadagnya bhagavan tvayi purātanam guruvtam
samprekṣya tvām prasādaye hi mayā eṣā purā tyaktā
20. O Jāmadagnya, having recognized in you an ancient spiritual seniority (guru-tva), I propitiate you, venerable one (bhagavan). Indeed, this (weapon) was abandoned by me long ago.
को जातु परभावां हि नारीं व्यालीमिव स्थिताम् ।
वासयेत गृहे जानन्स्त्रीणां दोषान्महात्ययान् ॥२१॥
21. ko jātu parabhāvāṁ hi nārīṁ vyālīmiva sthitām ,
vāsayeta gṛhe jānanstrīṇāṁ doṣānmahātyayān.
21. kaḥ jātu parabhāvām hi nārīm vyālīm iva sthitām
vāsayeta gṛhe jānan strīṇām doṣān mahātyayān
21. kaḥ jātu jānan strīṇām mahātyayān doṣān parabhāvām
vyālīm iva sthitām nārīm gṛhe vāsayeta hi
21. Who, indeed, knowing the terrible faults of women, would house in his home a woman who has been with another, standing like a venomous female serpent?
न भयाद्वासवस्यापि धर्मं जह्यां महाद्युते ।
प्रसीद मा वा यद्वा ते कार्यं तत्कुरु माचिरम् ॥२२॥
22. na bhayādvāsavasyāpi dharmaṁ jahyāṁ mahādyute ,
prasīda mā vā yadvā te kāryaṁ tatkuru māciram.
22. na bhayāt vāsavasya api dharmam jahyām mahādyute
prasīda mā vā yat vā te kāryam tat kuru mā ciram
22. mahādyute vāsavasya bhayāt api dharmam na jahyām
prasīda vā mā yat vā te kāryam tat māciram kuru
22. O greatly resplendent one, I would not abandon my natural law (dharma) even from fear of Indra (Vāsava). Be pleased, or not; whatever your task is, accomplish it without delay.
अयं चापि विशुद्धात्मन्पुराणे श्रूयते विभो ।
मरुत्तेन महाबुद्धे गीतः श्लोको महात्मना ॥२३॥
23. ayaṁ cāpi viśuddhātmanpurāṇe śrūyate vibho ,
maruttena mahābuddhe gītaḥ śloko mahātmanā.
23. ayam ca api viśuddhātman purāṇe śrūyate vibho
maruttena mahābuddhe gītaḥ ślokaḥ mahātmanā
23. viśuddhātman vibho mahābuddhe ayam ślokaḥ ca
api purāṇe mahātmanā maruttena gītaḥ śrūyate
23. O pure-souled one, O lord, O great-minded one, this verse, sung by the great-souled Marutta, is also recounted in the Purana.
गुरोरप्यवलिप्तस्य कार्याकार्यमजानतः ।
उत्पथप्रतिपन्नस्य कार्यं भवति शासनम् ॥२४॥
24. gurorapyavaliptasya kāryākāryamajānataḥ ,
utpathapratipannasya kāryaṁ bhavati śāsanam.
24. guroḥ api avaliptasya kāryākāryam ajānataḥ
utpathapratipannasya kāryam bhavati śāsanam
24. avaliptasya kāryākāryam ajānataḥ utpathapratipannasya
guroḥ api śāsanam kāryam bhavati
24. Even for a guru (guru) who is arrogant, ignorant of right and wrong, and has gone astray, disciplinary action (śāsanam) is appropriate.
स त्वं गुरुरिति प्रेम्णा मया संमानितो भृशम् ।
गुरुवृत्तं न जानीषे तस्माद्योत्स्याम्यहं त्वया ॥२५॥
25. sa tvaṁ gururiti premṇā mayā saṁmānito bhṛśam ,
guruvṛttaṁ na jānīṣe tasmādyotsyāmyahaṁ tvayā.
25. saḥ tvam guruḥ iti premnā mayā saṃmānitaḥ bhṛśam
guruvṛttam na jānīṣe tasmāt yotsyāmi aham tvayā
25. saḥ tvam guruḥ iti premnā mayā bhṛśam saṃmānitaḥ
tvam guruvṛttam na jānīṣe tasmāt aham tvayā yotsyāmi
25. I have greatly honored you as a guru (guru) out of love (premṇā). But you do not know the proper conduct of a guru (guruvṛttam); therefore, I will fight you.
गुरुं न हन्यां समरे ब्राह्मणं च विशेषतः ।
विशेषतस्तपोवृद्धमेवं क्षान्तं मया तव ॥२६॥
26. guruṁ na hanyāṁ samare brāhmaṇaṁ ca viśeṣataḥ ,
viśeṣatastapovṛddhamevaṁ kṣāntaṁ mayā tava.
26. gurum na hanyām samare brāhmaṇam ca viśeṣataḥ
viśeṣataḥ tapovṛddham evam kṣāntam mayā tava
26. aham samare gurum na hanyām,
brāhmaṇam ca viśeṣataḥ,
viśeṣataḥ tapovṛddham (na hanyām).
evam (idam) tava mayā kṣāntam (asti)
26. I should not kill a guru (guru) in battle, and a brahmin (brāhmaṇa) even more so; particularly one who has matured through asceticism (tapas). It is for these reasons that I have thus shown you forbearance.
उद्यतेषुमथो दृष्ट्वा ब्राह्मणं क्षत्रबन्धुवत् ।
यो हन्यात्समरे क्रुद्धो युध्यन्तमपलायिनम् ।
ब्रह्महत्या न तस्य स्यादिति धर्मेषु निश्चयः ॥२७॥
27. udyateṣumatho dṛṣṭvā brāhmaṇaṁ kṣatrabandhuvat ,
yo hanyātsamare kruddho yudhyantamapalāyinam ,
brahmahatyā na tasya syāditi dharmeṣu niścayaḥ.
27. udyateṣum atho dṛṣṭvā brāhmaṇam
kṣatrabandhuvat yaḥ hanyāt samare kruddhaḥ
yudhyantam apalāyinam brahmahatyā
na tasya syāt iti dharmeṣu niścayaḥ
27. atho yaḥ kruddhaḥ samare yudhyantam apalāyinam udyateṣum kṣatrabandhuvat brāhmaṇam dṛṣṭvā hanyāt,
tasya brahmahatyā na syāt iti dharmeṣu niścayaḥ
27. If one sees a Brahmin who has taken up arms like a degenerate kṣatriya (kṣatrabandhu), and, enraged, kills him in battle while he is fighting and not fleeing, then the sin of killing a Brahmin (brahmahatyā) will not be incurred by him. This is the decided rule (dharma) among the laws (dharma).
क्षत्रियाणां स्थितो धर्मे क्षत्रियोऽस्मि तपोधन ।
यो यथा वर्तते यस्मिंस्तथा तस्मिन्प्रवर्तयन् ।
नाधर्मं समवाप्नोति नरः श्रेयश्च विन्दति ॥२८॥
28. kṣatriyāṇāṁ sthito dharme kṣatriyo'smi tapodhana ,
yo yathā vartate yasmiṁstathā tasminpravartayan ,
nādharmaṁ samavāpnoti naraḥ śreyaśca vindati.
28. kṣatriyāṇām sthitaḥ dharme kṣatriyaḥ
asmi tapodhana yaḥ yathā vartate yasmin
tathā tasmin pravartayan na adharmam
samavāpnoti naraḥ śreyaḥ ca vindati
28. tapodhana,
asmi kṣatriyāṇām dharme sthitaḥ kṣatriyaḥ.
yaḥ yasmin yathā vartate,
tathā tasmin pravartayan naraḥ,
adharmam na samavāpnoti ca śreyaḥ vindati.
28. O ascetic (tapo-dhana), I am a kṣatriya, firmly established in the intrinsic nature (dharma) of kṣatriyas. A man who behaves towards another in the same way that other person behaves towards him does not incur unrighteousness (adharma) and attains prosperity.
अर्थे वा यदि वा धर्मे समर्थो देशकालवित् ।
अनर्थसंशयापन्नः श्रेयान्निःसंशयेन च ॥२९॥
29. arthe vā yadi vā dharme samartho deśakālavit ,
anarthasaṁśayāpannaḥ śreyānniḥsaṁśayena ca.

anarthasaṃśayāpannaḥ śreyān niḥsaṃśayena ca
29. deśakālavit samarthaḥ arthe vā yadi vā dharme,
anarthasaṃśayāpannaḥ śreyān ca niḥsaṃśayena.
29. One who is capable and knows the appropriate place and time (deśa-kāla-vit), whether in matters of material gain (artha) or moral law (dharma), is superior if he is beset by doubt regarding misfortune, compared to one who is completely devoid of doubt.
यस्मात्संशयितेऽर्थेऽस्मिन्यथान्यायं प्रवर्तसे ।
तस्माद्योत्स्यामि सहितस्त्वया राम महाहवे ।
पश्य मे बाहुवीर्यं च विक्रमं चातिमानुषम् ॥३०॥
30. yasmātsaṁśayite'rthe'sminyathānyāyaṁ pravartase ,
tasmādyotsyāmi sahitastvayā rāma mahāhave ,
paśya me bāhuvīryaṁ ca vikramaṁ cātimānuṣam.
30. yasmāt saṃśayite arthe asmin yathānyāyam
pravartase tasmāt yotsyāmi
sahitaḥ tvayā rāma mahāhave paśya me
bāhuvīryam ca vikramam ca atimānuṣam
30. yasmāt asmin saṃśayite arthe yathānyāyam pravartase,
tasmāt tvayā sahitaḥ rāma mahāhave yotsyāmi.
paśya me bāhuvīryam ca atimānuṣam vikramam ca.
30. Since you are acting according to what is just (yathānyāyam) in this doubtful matter, therefore, O Rāma, I shall fight alongside you in this great battle. Behold my arm's strength (bāhu-vīrya) and my superhuman valor.
एवं गतेऽपि तु मया यच्छक्यं भृगुनन्दन ।
तत्करिष्ये कुरुक्षेत्रे योत्स्ये विप्र त्वया सह ।
द्वंद्वे राम यथेष्टं ते सज्जो भव महामुने ॥३१॥
31. evaṁ gate'pi tu mayā yacchakyaṁ bhṛgunandana ,
tatkariṣye kurukṣetre yotsye vipra tvayā saha ,
dvaṁdve rāma yatheṣṭaṁ te sajjo bhava mahāmune.
31. evam gate api tu mayā yat śakyam
bhṛgunandana tat kariṣye kurukṣetre
yotsye vipra tvayā saha dvandve rāma
yatheṣṭam te sajjaḥ bhava mahāmune
31. bhṛgunandana vipra rāma mahāmune evam
api gate tu mayā yat śakyam tat
kariṣye tvayā saha kurukṣetre dvandve
yatheṣṭam te yotsye sajjaḥ bhava
31. O descendant of Bhṛgu (bhṛgunandana), O Brahmin (vipra), O Rāma, O great sage (mahāmune), even though matters have come to this, I will do what is possible for me. I will fight with you in Kurukṣetra, in single combat, just as you desire. Be ready!
तत्र त्वं निहतो राम मया शरशताचितः ।
लप्स्यसे निर्जिताँल्लोकाञ्शस्त्रपूतो महारणे ॥३२॥
32. tatra tvaṁ nihato rāma mayā śaraśatācitaḥ ,
lapsyase nirjitāँllokāñśastrapūto mahāraṇe.
32. tatra tvam nihataḥ rāma mayā śaraśatācitaḥ
lapsyase nirjitān lokān śastrapūtaḥ mahāraṇe
32. rāma tatra mahāraṇe mayā śaraśatācitaḥ śastrapūtaḥ
tvam nihataḥ (san) nirjitān lokān lapsyase
32. O Rāma, there in the great battle (mahāraṇe), struck down by me, covered with hundreds of arrows and purified by weapons, you will attain the worlds conquered by heroes.
स गच्छ विनिवर्तस्व कुरुक्षेत्रं रणप्रिय ।
तत्रैष्यामि महाबाहो युद्धाय त्वां तपोधन ॥३३॥
33. sa gaccha vinivartasva kurukṣetraṁ raṇapriya ,
tatraiṣyāmi mahābāho yuddhāya tvāṁ tapodhana.

tatra eṣyāmi mahābāho yuddhāya tvām tapodhana
33. raṇapriya mahābāho tapodhana saḥ tvam kurukṣetram
gaccha vinivartasva tatra yuddhāya tvām eṣyāmi
33. O lover of battle (raṇapriya), O mighty-armed one (mahābāho), O ascetic rich in austerity (tapas) (tapodhana), go and return to Kurukṣetra. I will come there for battle with you.
अपि यत्र त्वया राम कृतं शौचं पुरा पितुः ।
तत्राहमपि हत्वा त्वां शौचं कर्तास्मि भार्गव ॥३४॥
34. api yatra tvayā rāma kṛtaṁ śaucaṁ purā pituḥ ,
tatrāhamapi hatvā tvāṁ śaucaṁ kartāsmi bhārgava.
34. api yatra tvayā rāma kṛtam śaucam purā pituḥ tatra
aham api hatvā tvām śaucam kartā asmi bhārgava
34. rāma bhārgava api yatra purā tvayā pituḥ śaucam
kṛtam tatra aham api tvām hatvā śaucam kartā asmi
34. O Rāma, O descendant of Bhṛgu (bhārgava), even in the place where you formerly performed purification rites for your father, there I also, having killed you, will perform my own purification.
तत्र गच्छस्व राम त्वं त्वरितं युद्धदुर्मद ।
व्यपनेष्यामि ते दर्पं पौराणं ब्राह्मणब्रुव ॥३५॥
35. tatra gacchasva rāma tvaṁ tvaritaṁ yuddhadurmada ,
vyapaneṣyāmi te darpaṁ paurāṇaṁ brāhmaṇabruva.
35. tatra gacchasva rāma tvam tvaritam yuddhadurmada
vyapaneṣyāmi te darpam paurāṇam brāhmaṇabruva
35. rāma tvam yuddhadurmada brāhmaṇabruva tatra
tvaritam gacchasva te paurāṇam darpam vyapaneṣyāmi
35. O Rāma, you who are intoxicated with battle, O pseudo-Brahmin, go there quickly! I shall remove your ancient pride.
यच्चापि कत्थसे राम बहुशः परिषत्सु वै ।
निर्जिताः क्षत्रिया लोके मयैकेनेति तच्छृणु ॥३६॥
36. yaccāpi katthase rāma bahuśaḥ pariṣatsu vai ,
nirjitāḥ kṣatriyā loke mayaikeneti tacchṛṇu.
36. yat ca api katthase rāma bahuśaḥ pariṣatsu vai
nirjitāḥ kṣatriyāḥ loke mayā ekena iti tat śṛṇu
36. rāma yat ca api bahuśaḥ pariṣatsu vai "mayā ekena
loke kṣatriyāḥ nirjitāḥ" iti katthase tat śṛṇu
36. O Rāma, listen to this: you boast repeatedly in assemblies, indeed, saying 'Kṣatriyas in the world have been conquered by me alone!'
न तदा जायते भीष्मो मद्विधः क्षत्रियोऽपि वा ।
यस्ते युद्धमयं दर्पं कामं च व्यपनाशयेत् ॥३७॥
37. na tadā jāyate bhīṣmo madvidhaḥ kṣatriyo'pi vā ,
yaste yuddhamayaṁ darpaṁ kāmaṁ ca vyapanāśayet.
37. na tadā jāyate bhīṣmaḥ madvidhaḥ kṣatriyaḥ api vā
yaḥ te yuddhamayam darpam kāmam ca vyapanāśayet
37. tadā na bhīṣmaḥ madvidhaḥ vā api kṣatriyaḥ yaḥ te
yuddhamayam darpam ca kāmam vyapanāśayet jāyate
37. Until now, no formidable warrior like me, or even a Kṣatriya, existed who could completely eradicate your battle-born pride and desire.
सोऽहं जातो महाबाहो भीष्मः परपुरंजयः ।
व्यपनेष्यामि ते दर्पं युद्धे राम न संशयः ॥३८॥
38. so'haṁ jāto mahābāho bhīṣmaḥ parapuraṁjayaḥ ,
vyapaneṣyāmi te darpaṁ yuddhe rāma na saṁśayaḥ.
38. saḥ aham jātaḥ mahābāho bhīṣmaḥ parapurañjayaḥ
vyapaneṣyāmi te darpam yuddhe rāma na saṃśayaḥ
38. mahābāho rāma,
saḥ aham bhīṣmaḥ parapurañjayaḥ jātaḥ.
yuddhe te darpam vyapaneṣyāmi,
na saṃśayaḥ.
38. I, that formidable one, the conqueror of enemy cities, have appeared. O mighty-armed Rāma, I shall undoubtedly remove your pride in battle.
