जनमेजय उवाच ।
तस्मिन्कृतास्त्रे रथिनां प्रधाने प्रत्यागते भवनाद्वृत्रहन्तुः ।
अतः परं किमकुर्वन्त पार्थाः समेत्य शूरेण धनंजयेन ॥१॥
1. janamejaya uvāca ,
tasminkṛtāstre rathināṁ pradhāne; pratyāgate bhavanādvṛtrahantuḥ ,
ataḥ paraṁ kimakurvanta pārthāḥ; sametya śūreṇa dhanaṁjayena.

1. Janamejaya said: "After that master of weapons (kṛtāstra), the chief of charioteers, had returned from the abode of Indra (Vṛtrahan), what did the Pārthas do next, having met with the valiant Dhanañjaya (Arjuna)?"
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
वनेषु तेष्वेव तु ते नरेन्द्राः सहार्जुनेनेन्द्रसमेन वीराः ।
तस्मिंश्च शैलप्रवरे सुरम्ये धनेश्वराक्रीडगता विजह्रुः ॥२॥
2. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
vaneṣu teṣveva tu te narendrāḥ; sahārjunenendrasamena vīrāḥ ,
tasmiṁśca śailapravare suramye; dhaneśvarākrīḍagatā vijahruḥ.

te narendrāḥ saha arjunena indrasamena
vīrāḥ tasmin ca śailapravarae
suramye dhaneśvara ākrīḍagatā vijahruḥ
2. Vaiśampāyana said: Those heroic kings, along with Arjuna, who was equal to Indra (Indra), enjoyed themselves in those very forests. They had arrived at that excellent and very beautiful mountain, which was a pleasure ground belonging to the lord of wealth (Kubera).
वेश्मानि तान्यप्रतिमानि पश्यन्क्रीडाश्च नानाद्रुमसंनिकर्षाः ।
चचार धन्वी बहुधा नरेन्द्रः सोऽस्त्रेषु यत्तः सततं किरीटी ॥३॥
3. veśmāni tānyapratimāni paśya;nkrīḍāśca nānādrumasaṁnikarṣāḥ ,
cacāra dhanvī bahudhā narendraḥ; so'streṣu yattaḥ satataṁ kirīṭī.

krīḍāḥ ca nānādrumasaṃnikarṣāḥ
cacāra dhanvī bahudhā narendraḥ
saḥ astreṣu yattaḥ satataṃ kirīṭī
3. While observing those incomparable mansions and the recreational areas near various trees, Arjuna, the archer and a king among men, wandered extensively. He, the diadem-wearer, was also constantly diligent in his practice of divine weapons (astra).
अवाप्य वासं नरदेवपुत्राः प्रसादजं वैश्रवणस्य राज्ञः ।
न प्राणिनां ते स्पृहयन्ति राजञ्शिवश्च कालः स बभूव तेषाम् ॥४॥
4. avāpya vāsaṁ naradevaputrāḥ; prasādajaṁ vaiśravaṇasya rājñaḥ ,
na prāṇināṁ te spṛhayanti rāja;ñśivaśca kālaḥ sa babhūva teṣām.
4. avāpya vāsaṃ naradevāputrāḥ
prasādajaṃ vaiśravaṇasya rājñaḥ na
prāṇināṃ te spṛhayanti rājan
śivaḥ ca kālaḥ saḥ babhūva teṣām
4. O King, having acquired a dwelling that was a gift from King Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera), those royal princes (the Pāṇḍavas) did not envy any creatures. Indeed, that time proved to be auspicious for them.
समेत्य पार्थेन यथैकरात्रमूषुः समास्तत्र तदा चतस्रः ।
पूर्वाश्च षट्ता दश पाण्डवानां शिवा बभूवुर्वसतां वनेषु ॥५॥
5. sametya pārthena yathaikarātra;mūṣuḥ samāstatra tadā catasraḥ ,
pūrvāśca ṣaṭtā daśa pāṇḍavānāṁ; śivā babhūvurvasatāṁ vaneṣu.
5. sametya pārthena yathā ekarātraṃ
ūṣuḥ samāḥ tatra tadā catasraḥ
pūrvāḥ ca ṣaṭ tāḥ daśa pāṇḍavānāṃ
śivā babhūvuḥ vasatāṃ vaneṣu
5. Having reunited with Arjuna, they (the Pāṇḍavas) resided there for four years, as if they had only spent a single night together. Those four years, along with the previous six, totaling ten years for the Pāṇḍavas dwelling in the forests, proved auspicious.
ततोऽब्रवीद्वायुसुतस्तरस्वी जिष्णुश्च राजानमुपोपविश्य ।
यमौ च वीरौ सुरराजकल्पावेकान्तमास्थाय हितं प्रियं च ॥६॥
6. tato'bravīdvāyusutastarasvī; jiṣṇuśca rājānamupopaviśya ,
yamau ca vīrau surarājakalpā;vekāntamāsthāya hitaṁ priyaṁ ca.
6. tataḥ abravīt vāyusutaḥ tarasvī
jiṣṇuḥ ca rājānam upopaviśya
yamau ca vīrau surarājakalpau
ekāntam āsthāya hitam priyam ca
6. Then, having sat near the king (Yudhiṣṭhira) in a secluded place, the mighty son of Vayu (Bhīma) and the victorious Arjuna, along with the two heroic Yamas (Nakula and Sahadeva) who were like the king of the gods, spoke words that were both beneficial and pleasing.
तव प्रतिज्ञां कुरुराज सत्यां चिकीर्षमाणास्त्वदनु प्रियं च ।
ततोऽनुगच्छाम वनान्यपास्य सुयोधनं सानुचरं निहन्तुम् ॥७॥
7. tava pratijñāṁ kururāja satyāṁ; cikīrṣamāṇāstvadanu priyaṁ ca ,
tato'nugacchāma vanānyapāsya; suyodhanaṁ sānucaraṁ nihantum.
7. tava pratijñām kururāja satyām
cikīrṣamāṇāḥ tvad anu priyam ca
tataḥ anugacchāma vanāni apāsya
suyodhanam sānucaram nihantum
7. O King of Kurus, we desire to fulfill your true vow and to do what is pleasing according to you. Therefore, let us abandon these forests and go to slay Suyodhana along with his followers.
एकादशं वर्षमिदं वसामः सुयोधनेनात्तसुखाः सुखार्हाः ।
तं वञ्चयित्वाधमबुद्धिशीलमज्ञातवासं सुखमाप्नुयामः ॥८॥
8. ekādaśaṁ varṣamidaṁ vasāmaḥ; suyodhanenāttasukhāḥ sukhārhāḥ ,
taṁ vañcayitvādhamabuddhiśīla;majñātavāsaṁ sukhamāpnuyāmaḥ.
8. ekādaśam varṣam idam vasāmaḥ
suyodhanena āttasukhāḥ sukhārhāḥ
tam vañcayitvā adhamabuddhiśīlam
ajñātavāsam sukham āpnuyāmaḥ
8. This is the eleventh year we have been dwelling here, deprived of happiness by Suyodhana, though we are truly deserving of it. Having deceived him, whose intellect and character are base, let us now attain happiness in our period of incognito (ajñātavāsa).
तवाज्ञया पार्थिव निर्विशङ्का विहाय मानं विचरन्वनानि ।
समीपवासेन विलोभितास्ते ज्ञास्यन्ति नास्मानपकृष्टदेशान् ॥९॥
9. tavājñayā pārthiva nirviśaṅkā; vihāya mānaṁ vicaranvanāni ,
samīpavāsena vilobhitāste; jñāsyanti nāsmānapakṛṣṭadeśān.
9. tava ājñayā pārthiva nirviśaṅkāḥ vihāya mānam vicaran vanāni
samīpavāsena vilobhitāḥ te jñāsyanti na asmān apakṛṣṭadeśān
9. O King, by your command, we will wander through the forests fearlessly, having abandoned our pride. Although they (Duryodhana's men) might be misled by our close proximity, they will not recognize us, who are dwelling in humble regions.
संवत्सरं तं तु विहृत्य गूढं नराधमं तं सुखमुद्धरेम ।
निर्यात्य वैरं सफलं सपुष्पं तस्मै नरेन्द्राधमपूरुषाय ॥१०॥
10. saṁvatsaraṁ taṁ tu vihṛtya gūḍhaṁ; narādhamaṁ taṁ sukhamuddharema ,
niryātya vairaṁ saphalaṁ sapuṣpaṁ; tasmai narendrādhamapūruṣāya.
10. saṃvatsaram tam tu vihṛtya gūḍham
narādhamam tam sukham uddharem
| niryātya vairam saphalam sapuṣpam
tasmai narendrādhamapūruṣāya
10. After having spent that year in hiding, we should easily eliminate that wicked man. Our enmity towards that vilest of rulers, that wretched person, will then bear fruit and blossom.
सुयोधनायानुचरैर्वृताय ततो महीमाहर धर्मराज ।
स्वर्गोपमं शैलमिमं चरद्भिः शक्यो विहन्तुं नरदेव शोकः ॥११॥
11. suyodhanāyānucarairvṛtāya; tato mahīmāhara dharmarāja ,
svargopamaṁ śailamimaṁ caradbhiḥ; śakyo vihantuṁ naradeva śokaḥ.
11. suyodhanāya anucaraiḥ vṛtāya
tataḥ mahīm āhara dharmarāja |
svargopamam śailam imam caradbhiḥ
śakyaḥ vihantum naradeva śokaḥ
11. Therefore, O king of righteousness (dharma), take the earth (kingdom) from Suyodhana, who is surrounded by his attendants. O king of men, sorrow can be dispelled by those who wander upon this mountain, which is like heaven.
कीर्तिश्च ते भारत पुण्यगन्धा नश्येत लोकेषु चराचरेषु ।
तत्प्राप्य राज्यं कुरुपुंगवानां शक्यं महत्प्राप्तमथ क्रियाश्च ॥१२॥
12. kīrtiśca te bhārata puṇyagandhā; naśyeta lokeṣu carācareṣu ,
tatprāpya rājyaṁ kurupuṁgavānāṁ; śakyaṁ mahatprāptamatha kriyāśca.
12. kīrtiḥ ca te bhārata puṇyagandhā
naśyet lokeṣu carācareṣu | tat
prāpya rājyam kurupuṅgavānām śakyam
mahat prāptam atha kriyāḥ ca
12. O Bhārata, your fame, which possesses a sacred fragrance, would perish throughout all the worlds, both moving and unmoving. Therefore, having obtained that kingdom of the best of Kurus, a great accomplishment is possible, as are (righteous) actions (karma).
इदं तु शक्यं सततं नरेन्द्र प्राप्तुं त्वया यल्लभसे कुबेरात् ।
कुरुष्व बुद्धिं द्विषतां वधाय कृतागसां भारत निग्रहे च ॥१३॥
13. idaṁ tu śakyaṁ satataṁ narendra; prāptuṁ tvayā yallabhase kuberāt ,
kuruṣva buddhiṁ dviṣatāṁ vadhāya; kṛtāgasāṁ bhārata nigrahe ca.
13. idam tu śakyam satatam narendra
prāptum tvayā yat labhase kuberāt
| kuruṣva buddhim dviṣatām
vadhāya kṛtāgasām bhārata nigrahe ca
13. O king (narendra), this (power/wealth), which you might obtain from Kubera, is always within your reach. Therefore, O Bhārata, resolve to destroy the enemies and to subdue those who have committed offenses.
तेजस्तवोग्रं न सहेत राजन्समेत्य साक्षादपि वज्रपाणिः ।
न हि व्यथां जातु करिष्यतस्तौ समेत्य देवैरपि धर्मराज ॥१४॥
14. tejastavograṁ na saheta rāja;nsametya sākṣādapi vajrapāṇiḥ ,
na hi vyathāṁ jātu kariṣyatastau; sametya devairapi dharmarāja.
14. tejaḥ tava ugram na saheta rājan
sametya sākṣāt api vajrapāṇiḥ |
na hi vyathām jātu kariṣyataḥ
tau sametya devaiḥ api dharmarāja
14. O king, even Indra (vajrapāṇiḥ) himself, encountering your fierce splendor face-to-face, would not be able to endure it. Indeed, those two will never experience any distress (vyathām), even when encountering the gods, O king of natural law (dharma).
त्वदर्थसिद्ध्यर्थमभिप्रवृत्तौ सुपर्णकेतुश्च शिनेश्च नप्ता ।
यथैव कृष्णोऽप्रतिमो बलेन तथैव राजन्स शिनिप्रवीरः ॥१५॥
15. tvadarthasiddhyarthamabhipravṛttau; suparṇaketuśca śineśca naptā ,
yathaiva kṛṣṇo'pratimo balena; tathaiva rājansa śinipravīraḥ.
15. tvat artha-siddhi-artham abhipravṛttau
suparṇaketuḥ ca śineḥ ca naptā
| yathā eva kṛṣṇaḥ apratimaḥ balena
tathā eva rājan sa śinipravīraḥ
15. Kṛṣṇa (suparṇaketuḥ), whose banner bears Garuḍa, and the grandson of Śini (śineḥ naptā) are both engaged in fulfilling your objective. Just as Kṛṣṇa is unrivaled in strength, so too, O king, is that great hero from the Śini lineage (śinipravīraḥ).
तवार्थसिद्ध्यर्थमभिप्रवृत्तौ यथैव कृष्णः सह यादवैस्तैः ।
तथैव चावां नरदेववर्य यमौ च वीरौ कृतिनौ प्रयोगे ।
त्वदर्थयोगप्रभवप्रधानाः समं करिष्याम परान्समेत्य ॥१६॥
16. tavārthasiddhyarthamabhipravṛttau; yathaiva kṛṣṇaḥ saha yādavaistaiḥ ,
tathaiva cāvāṁ naradevavarya; yamau ca vīrau kṛtinau prayoge ,
tvadarthayogaprabhavapradhānāḥ; samaṁ kariṣyāma parānsametya.
16. tava artha-siddhi-artham abhipravṛttau yathā eva
kṛṣṇaḥ saha yādavaiḥ taiḥ | tathā eva ca āvām naradeva-varya
yamau ca vīrau kṛtinau prayoge | tvat
artha-yoga-prabhava-pradhānāḥ samam kariṣyāma parān sametya
16. Just as Kṛṣṇa, along with those Yādava warriors, is devoted to achieving your purpose, so too, O best among kings, are we two (Nakula and Sahadeva) - the twins, valiant heroes, and adept in strategic application (yoga). We, whose primary strength derives from the skillful application (yoga) for your objective, will together defeat the enemies upon encountering them.
ततस्तदाज्ञाय मतं महात्मा तेषां स धर्मस्य सुतो वरिष्ठः ।
प्रदक्षिणं वैश्रवणाधिवासं चकार धर्मार्थविदुत्तमौजः ॥१७॥
17. tatastadājñāya mataṁ mahātmā; teṣāṁ sa dharmasya suto variṣṭhaḥ ,
pradakṣiṇaṁ vaiśravaṇādhivāsaṁ; cakāra dharmārthaviduttamaujaḥ.
17. tataḥ tat ājñāya matam mahātmā teṣām
sa dharmasya sutaḥ variṣṭhaḥ |
pradakṣiṇam vaiśravaṇa-adhivāsam
cakāra dharma-artha-vit uttama-ojaḥ
17. Then, having understood their opinion, that great-souled and foremost son of natural law (dharma) among them - Yudhiṣṭhira (dharmārthavit), who understood the meaning and purpose of righteousness and possessed excellent vigor - performed a circumambulation (pradakṣiṇam) of Vaiśravaṇa's abode.
आमन्त्र्य वेश्मानि नदीः सरांसि सर्वाणि रक्षांसि च धर्मराजः ।
यथागतं मार्गमवेक्षमाणः पुनर्गिरिं चैव निरीक्षमाणः ॥१८॥
18. āmantrya veśmāni nadīḥ sarāṁsi; sarvāṇi rakṣāṁsi ca dharmarājaḥ ,
yathāgataṁ mārgamavekṣamāṇaḥ; punargiriṁ caiva nirīkṣamāṇaḥ.
18. āmantrya veśmāni nadīḥ sarāṃsi
sarvāṇi rakṣāṃsi ca dharmarājaḥ
yathāgatam mārgam avekṣamāṇaḥ
punaḥ girim ca eva nirīkṣamāṇaḥ
18. Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of righteousness (dharmarāja), having bid farewell to all the dwellings, rivers, lakes, and Rākṣasas, looked back upon the path he had traveled and also gazed once more at the mountain.
समाप्तकर्मा सहितः सुहृद्भिर्जित्वा सपत्नान्प्रतिलभ्य राज्यम् ।
शैलेन्द्र भूयस्तपसे धृतात्मा द्रष्टा तवास्मीति मतिं चकार ॥१९॥
19. samāptakarmā sahitaḥ suhṛdbhi;rjitvā sapatnānpratilabhya rājyam ,
śailendra bhūyastapase dhṛtātmā; draṣṭā tavāsmīti matiṁ cakāra.
19. samāptakarmā sahitaḥ suhṛdbhiḥ
jitvā sapatnān pratilabya rājyam
śailendra bhūyaḥ tapase dhṛtātmā
draṣṭā tava asmi iti matim cakāra
19. Having completed his task, accompanied by his friends, having conquered his enemies and regained his kingdom, he (Yudhiṣṭhira) decided, "O King of Mountains, with my self (ātman) now disciplined for further austerity (tapas), I shall indeed see you again."
वृतः स सर्वैरनुजैर्द्विजैश्च तेनैव मार्गेण पतिः कुरूणाम् ।
उवाह चैनान्सगणांस्तथैव घटोत्कचः पर्वतनिर्झरेषु ॥२०॥
20. vṛtaḥ sa sarvairanujairdvijaiśca; tenaiva mārgeṇa patiḥ kurūṇām ,
uvāha cainānsagaṇāṁstathaiva; ghaṭotkacaḥ parvatanirjhareṣu.
20. vṛtaḥ sa sarvaiḥ anujaiḥ dvijaiḥ
ca tena eva mārgeṇa patiḥ kurūṇām
uvāha ca enān sagaṇān tathā
eva ghaṭotkacaḥ parvatanirjhareṣu
20. He, the lord of the Kurus, accompanied by all his younger brothers and Brahmins (dvijāḥ), went by that very path. And Ghaṭotkaca, along with his attendants, carried them (the Pandavas) through the mountain streams.
तान्प्रस्थितान्प्रीतिमना महर्षिः पितेव पुत्राननुशिष्य सर्वान् ।
स लोमशः प्रीतमना जगाम दिवौकसां पुण्यतमं निवासम् ॥२१॥
21. tānprasthitānprītimanā maharṣiḥ; piteva putrānanuśiṣya sarvān ,
sa lomaśaḥ prītamanā jagāma; divaukasāṁ puṇyatamaṁ nivāsam.
21. tān prasthitān prītimanāḥ maharṣiḥ
pitā iva putrān anuśiṣya
sarvān sa lomaśaḥ prītimanāḥ jagāma
divaukasām puṇyataman nivāsam
21. That great sage (maharṣiḥ) Lomaśa, with a joyful mind, having advised all of them who were departing, just as a father advises his sons, then went to the most sacred dwelling place of the gods (divaukasāḥ).
तेनानुशिष्टार्ष्टिषेणेन चैव तीर्थानि रम्याणि तपोवनानि ।
महान्ति चान्यानि सरांसि पार्थाः संपश्यमानाः प्रययुर्नराग्र्याः ॥२२॥
22. tenānuśiṣṭārṣṭiṣeṇena caiva; tīrthāni ramyāṇi tapovanāni ,
mahānti cānyāni sarāṁsi pārthāḥ; saṁpaśyamānāḥ prayayurnarāgryāḥ.
22. tena anuśiṣṭa-ārṣṭiṣeṇena ca eva
tīrthāni ramyāṇi tapovanāni
mahānti ca anyāni sarāṃsi pārthāḥ
saṃpaśyamānāḥ prayayuḥ narāgryāḥ
22. And indeed, guided by Arṣṭiṣeṇa (who had himself been instructed by him), the foremost among men, O Pārthas, proceeded, observing beautiful pilgrimage sites, hermitages, and other great lakes.
