वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्तास्तु ते तेन पौरजानपदा जनाः ।
वृद्धेन राज्ञा कौरव्य नष्टसंज्ञा इवाभवन् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamuktāstu te tena paurajānapadā janāḥ ,
vṛddhena rājñā kauravya naṣṭasaṁjñā ivābhavan.

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: 'O scion of Kuru, when those citizens and country folk were thus addressed by that aged king, they became as if deprived of their consciousness.'
तूष्णींभूतांस्ततस्तांस्तु बाष्पकण्ठान्महीपतिः ।
धृतराष्ट्रो महीपालः पुनरेवाभ्यभाषत ॥२॥
2. tūṣṇīṁbhūtāṁstatastāṁstu bāṣpakaṇṭhānmahīpatiḥ ,
dhṛtarāṣṭro mahīpālaḥ punarevābhyabhāṣata.
2. tūṣṇīmbhūtān tataḥ tān tu bāṣpakaṇṭhān mahīpatiḥ
dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ mahīpālaḥ punaḥ eva abhyabhāṣata

tūṣṇīmbhūtān bāṣpakaṇṭhān punaḥ eva abhyabhāṣata
2. Then, the king, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the protector of the earth, again addressed them, who had become silent and whose throats were choked with tears.
वृद्धं मां हतपुत्रं च धर्मपत्न्या सहानया ।
विलपन्तं बहुविधं कृपणं चैव सत्तमाः ॥३॥
3. vṛddhaṁ māṁ hataputraṁ ca dharmapatnyā sahānayā ,
vilapantaṁ bahuvidhaṁ kṛpaṇaṁ caiva sattamāḥ.
3. vṛddham mām hataputram ca dharmapatnyā saha anayā
vilapantam bahuvidham kṛpaṇam ca eva sattamāḥ
3. sattamāḥ vṛddham mām hataputram ca anayā dharmapatnyā
saha bahuvidham vilapantam ca eva kṛpaṇam
3. O best of men, I am old, my sons are slain, and with this lawful wife, I am lamenting in many ways and am truly miserable.
पित्रा स्वयमनुज्ञातं कृष्णद्वैपायनेन वै ।
वनवासाय धर्मज्ञा धर्मज्ञेन नृपेण च ॥४॥
4. pitrā svayamanujñātaṁ kṛṣṇadvaipāyanena vai ,
vanavāsāya dharmajñā dharmajñena nṛpeṇa ca.
4. pitrā svayam anujñātam kṛṣṇadvaipāyanena vai
vanavāsāya dharmajñā dharmajñena nṛpeṇa ca
4. dharmajñā pitrā kṛṣṇadvaipāyanena vai
dharmajñena nṛpeṇa ca svayam vanavāsāya anujñātam
4. O knowers of righteousness (dharma), I have already been permitted for a forest dwelling by my own father, Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana, and indeed, by the king, who is also a knower of righteousness (dharma).
सोऽहं पुनः पुनर्याचे शिरसावनतोऽनघाः ।
गान्धार्या सहितं तन्मां समनुज्ञातुमर्हथ ॥५॥
5. so'haṁ punaḥ punaryāce śirasāvanato'naghāḥ ,
gāndhāryā sahitaṁ tanmāṁ samanujñātumarhatha.
5. saḥ aham punaḥ punaḥ yāce śirasā avanataḥ anaghāḥ
gāndhāryā sahitam tat mām samanujñātum arhatha
5. anaghāḥ tat saḥ aham śirasā avanataḥ punaḥ punaḥ
yāce mām gāndhāryā sahitam samanujñātum arhatha
5. O sinless ones (anaghāḥ), therefore, I, bowing down my head, repeatedly request that you grant permission to me, along with Gāndhārī.
श्रुत्वा तु कुरुराजस्य वाक्यानि करुणानि ते ।
रुरुदुः सर्वतो राजन्समेताः कुरुजाङ्गलाः ॥६॥
6. śrutvā tu kururājasya vākyāni karuṇāni te ,
ruruduḥ sarvato rājansametāḥ kurujāṅgalāḥ.

6. O king, having heard the pitiable words of the Kuru king, all the assembled people of Kuru-Jāṅgala wept from all sides.
उत्तरीयैः करैश्चापि संछाद्य वदनानि ते ।
रुरुदुः शोकसंतप्ता मुहूर्तं पितृमातृवत् ॥७॥
7. uttarīyaiḥ karaiścāpi saṁchādya vadanāni te ,
ruruduḥ śokasaṁtaptā muhūrtaṁ pitṛmātṛvat.
7. uttarīyaiḥ karaiḥ ca api saṃchādya vadanāni
te ruruduḥ śokasaṃtaptāḥ muhūrtam pitṛmātṛvat
7. te śokasaṃtaptāḥ uttarīyaiḥ karaiḥ ca api
vadanāni saṃchādya pitṛmātṛvat muhūrtam ruruduḥ
7. Afflicted by sorrow, they covered their faces with their upper garments and even with their hands, weeping for a moment as if they were parents.
हृदयैः शून्यभूतैस्ते धृतराष्ट्रप्रवासजम् ।
दुःखं संधारयन्तः स्म नष्टसंज्ञा इवाभवन् ॥८॥
8. hṛdayaiḥ śūnyabhūtaiste dhṛtarāṣṭrapravāsajam ,
duḥkhaṁ saṁdhārayantaḥ sma naṣṭasaṁjñā ivābhavan.
8. hṛdayaiḥ śūnyabhūtaiḥ te dhṛtarāṣṭra pravāsajam
duḥkham saṃdhārayantaḥ sma naṣṭasaṃjñāḥ iva abhavan
8. te hṛdayaiḥ śūnyabhūtaiḥ dhṛtarāṣṭra pravāsajam
duḥkham saṃdhārayantaḥ sma naṣṭasaṃjñāḥ iva abhavan
8. With their hearts utterly empty, they endured the sorrow (duḥkha) born of Dhritarashtra's departure, becoming as if deprived of consciousness.
ते विनीय तमायासं कुरुराजवियोगजम् ।
शनैः शनैस्तदान्योन्यमब्रुवन्स्वमतान्युत ॥९॥
9. te vinīya tamāyāsaṁ kururājaviyogajam ,
śanaiḥ śanaistadānyonyamabruvansvamatānyuta.
9. te vinīya tam āyāsam kururāja viyogajam śanaiḥ
śanaiḥ tadā anyonyam abruvan svamatāni uta
9. te kururāja viyogajam tam āyāsam vinīya tadā
śanaiḥ śanaiḥ anyonyam uta svamatāni abruvan
9. Having overcome that mental anguish (āyāsa) caused by the separation from the Kuru king, they then gradually spoke their own opinions to one another.
ततः संधाय ते सर्वे वाक्यान्यथ समासतः ।
एकस्मिन्ब्राह्मणे राजन्नावेश्योचुर्नराधिपम् ॥१०॥
10. tataḥ saṁdhāya te sarve vākyānyatha samāsataḥ ,
ekasminbrāhmaṇe rājannāveśyocurnarādhipam.
10. tataḥ saṃdhāya te sarve vākyāni atha samāsataḥ
ekasmin brāhmaṇe rājan āveśya ūcuḥ narādhipam
10. rājan tataḥ te sarve atha samāsataḥ vākyāni
saṃdhāya ekasmin brāhmaṇe āveśya narādhipam ūcuḥ
10. O King, all of them then concisely formulated their statements, and having entrusted them to a single brahmin (brāhmaṇa), they spoke to the ruler.
ततः स्वचरणे वृद्धः संमतोऽर्थविशारदः ।
साम्बाख्यो बह्वृचो राजन्वक्तुं समुपचक्रमे ॥११॥
11. tataḥ svacaraṇe vṛddhaḥ saṁmato'rthaviśāradaḥ ,
sāmbākhyo bahvṛco rājanvaktuṁ samupacakrame.
11. tataḥ sva-caraṇe vṛddhaḥ sammataḥ artha-viśāradaḥ
sāmbākhyaḥ bahvṛcaḥ rājan vaktum samupacakrame
11. tataḥ rājan sāmbākhyaḥ bahvṛcaḥ sva-caraṇe vṛddhaḥ
sammataḥ artha-viśāradaḥ vaktum samupacakrame
11. Then, O King, a respected scholar named Samba, who was learned in his own traditional school, well-regarded, and an expert in affairs (artha), began to speak.
अनुमान्य महाराजं तत्सदः संप्रभाष्य च ।
विप्रः प्रगल्भो मेधावी स राजानमुवाच ह ॥१२॥
12. anumānya mahārājaṁ tatsadaḥ saṁprabhāṣya ca ,
vipraḥ pragalbho medhāvī sa rājānamuvāca ha.
12. anumānya mahārājam tat-sadaḥ samprabhāṣya ca
vipraḥ pragalbhaḥ medhāvī saḥ rājānam uvāca ha
12. mahārājam anumānya tat-sadaḥ samprabhāṣya ca
saḥ vipraḥ pragalbhaḥ medhāvī rājānam uvāca ha
12. Having obtained the great king's permission and having respectfully addressed that assembly, that confident and intelligent brahmin then spoke to the king.
राजन्वाक्यं जनस्यास्य मयि सर्वं समर्पितम् ।
वक्ष्यामि तदहं वीर तज्जुषस्व नराधिप ॥१३॥
13. rājanvākyaṁ janasyāsya mayi sarvaṁ samarpitam ,
vakṣyāmi tadahaṁ vīra tajjuṣasva narādhipa.
13. rājan vākyam janasya asya mayi sarvam samarpitam
vakṣyāmi tat aham vīra tat juṣasva narādhipa
13. rājan asya janasya sarvam vākyam mayi samarpitam
aham tat vakṣyāmi vīra narādhipa tat juṣasva
13. O King, all the words of these people have been entrusted to me. I shall speak them, O hero; please heed that, O ruler of men!
यथा वदसि राजेन्द्र सर्वमेतत्तथा विभो ।
नात्र मिथ्या वचः किंचित्सुहृत्त्वं नः परस्परम् ॥१४॥
14. yathā vadasi rājendra sarvametattathā vibho ,
nātra mithyā vacaḥ kiṁcitsuhṛttvaṁ naḥ parasparam.
14. yathā vadasi rājendra sarvam etat tathā vibho na
atra mithyā vacaḥ kiṃcit suhṛttvam naḥ parasparam
14. rājendra vibho yathā vadasi etat sarvam tathā na
atra kiṃcit mithyā vacaḥ naḥ suhṛttvam parasparam
14. O chief of kings, just as you speak, so is all this, O powerful one. There is no falsehood (mithyā) here whatsoever; our friendship (suhṛttvam) is mutual.
न जात्वस्य तु वंशस्य राज्ञां कश्चित्कदाचन ।
राजासीद्यः प्रजापालः प्रजानामप्रियो भवेत् ॥१५॥
15. na jātvasya tu vaṁśasya rājñāṁ kaścitkadācana ,
rājāsīdyaḥ prajāpālaḥ prajānāmapriyo bhavet.
15. na jātu asya tu vaṃśasya rājñām kaścit kadācana
rājā āsīt yaḥ prajāpālaḥ prajānām apriyaḥ bhavet
15. asya vaṃśasya rājñām kaścit rājā yaḥ prajāpālaḥ
prajānām apriyaḥ bhavet saḥ tu jātu kadācana na āsīt
15. In this lineage of kings, there has never been any king who, despite being a protector of the people, was disliked by his subjects.
पितृवद्भ्रातृवच्चैव भवन्तः पालयन्ति नः ।
न च दुर्योधनः किंचिदयुक्तं कृतवान्नृप ॥१६॥
16. pitṛvadbhrātṛvaccaiva bhavantaḥ pālayanti naḥ ,
na ca duryodhanaḥ kiṁcidayuktaṁ kṛtavānnṛpa.
16. pitṛvat bhrātṛvat ca eva bhavantaḥ pālayanti naḥ
na ca duryodhanaḥ kiṃcit ayuktam kṛtavān nṛpa
16. bhavantaḥ pitṛvat bhrātṛvat ca eva naḥ pālayanti
nṛpa duryodhanaḥ ca kiṃcit ayuktam na kṛtavān
16. You indeed protect us like fathers and brothers. And O king, Duryodhana has not done anything improper.
यथा ब्रवीति धर्मज्ञो मुनिः सत्यवतीसुतः ।
तथा कुरु महाराज स हि नः परमो गुरुः ॥१७॥
17. yathā bravīti dharmajño muniḥ satyavatīsutaḥ ,
tathā kuru mahārāja sa hi naḥ paramo guruḥ.
17. yathā bravīti dharmajñaḥ muniḥ satyavatīsutaḥ
tathā kuru mahārāja saḥ hi naḥ paramaḥ guruḥ
17. mahārāja dharmajñaḥ satyavatīsutaḥ muniḥ yathā
bravīti tathā kuru hi saḥ naḥ paramaḥ guruḥ
17. O great king, act as the sage (muni), the son of Satyavati, who knows natural law (dharma), instructs. For he is indeed our supreme teacher (guru).
त्यक्ता वयं तु भवता दुःखशोकपरायणाः ।
भविष्यामश्चिरं राजन्भवद्गुणशतैर्हृताः ॥१८॥
18. tyaktā vayaṁ tu bhavatā duḥkhaśokaparāyaṇāḥ ,
bhaviṣyāmaściraṁ rājanbhavadguṇaśatairhṛtāḥ.
18. tyaktāḥ vayam tu bhavatā duḥkhaśokaparāyaṇāḥ
bhaviṣyāmaḥ ciram rājan bhavadguṇaśataiḥ hṛtāḥ
18. rājan bhavatā tyaktāḥ vayam tu duḥkhaśokaparāyaṇāḥ
ciram bhaviṣyāmaḥ bhavadguṇaśataiḥ hṛtāḥ
18. O king, if we are abandoned by you, we shall long remain immersed in sorrow and grief, having been captivated by your hundreds of good qualities.
यथा शंतनुना गुप्ता राज्ञा चित्राङ्गदेन च ।
भीष्मवीर्योपगूढेन पित्रा च तव पार्थिव ॥१९॥
19. yathā śaṁtanunā guptā rājñā citrāṅgadena ca ,
bhīṣmavīryopagūḍhena pitrā ca tava pārthiva.
19. yathā śaṃtanunā guptā rājñā citrāṅgadena ca
bhīṣmavīryopagūḍhena pitrā ca tava pārthiva
19. pārthiva tava pitrā ca bhīṣmavīryopagūḍhena
śaṃtanunā rājñā citrāṅgadena ca guptā yathā
19. O king (pārthiva), just as (the subjects were) protected by Śaṃtanu, and by King Citrāṅgada, and by your father (Pāṇḍu), who was supported by Bhīṣma's valor,
भवद्बुद्धियुजा चैव पाण्डुना पृथिवीक्षिता ।
तथा दुर्योधनेनापि राज्ञा सुपरिपालिताः ॥२०॥
20. bhavadbuddhiyujā caiva pāṇḍunā pṛthivīkṣitā ,
tathā duryodhanenāpi rājñā suparipālitāḥ.
20. bhavadbuddhiyujā ca eva pāṇḍunā pṛthivīkṣitā
tathā duryodhanena api rājñā suparipālitāḥ
20. tathā ca eva pāṇḍunā pṛthivīkṣitā bhavadbuddhiyujā
rājñā duryodhanena api suparipālitāḥ
20. ...so too were they very well protected by Pāṇḍu, the ruler of the earth, who was indeed endowed with your wisdom, and by King Duryodhana.
न स्वल्पमपि पुत्रस्ते व्यलीकं कृतवान्नृप ।
पितरीव सुविश्वस्तास्तस्मिन्नपि नराधिपे ।
वयमास्म यथा सम्यग्भवतो विदितं तथा ॥२१॥
21. na svalpamapi putraste vyalīkaṁ kṛtavānnṛpa ,
pitarīva suviśvastāstasminnapi narādhipe ,
vayamāsma yathā samyagbhavato viditaṁ tathā.
21. na svalpam api putraḥ te vyalīkam
kṛtavān nṛpa pitari iva suviśvastāḥ
tasmin api narādhipe vayam āsma
yathā samyak bhavataḥ viditam tathā
21. nṛpa te putraḥ svalpam api vyalīkam
na kṛtavān vayam pitari iva tasmin
narādhipe api suviśvastāḥ āsma
yathā samyak bhavataḥ viditam tathā
21. O king (nṛpa), your son has not committed even the slightest wrong (vyalīkam). We were completely confident in that lord of men (narādhipa), just as (we would be) in a father, and as is indeed well known to you.
तथा वर्षसहस्राय कुन्तीपुत्रेण धीमता ।
पाल्यमाना धृतिमता सुखं विन्दामहे नृप ॥२२॥
22. tathā varṣasahasrāya kuntīputreṇa dhīmatā ,
pālyamānā dhṛtimatā sukhaṁ vindāmahe nṛpa.
22. tathā varṣasahasrāya kuntīputreṇa dhīmatā
pālyamānā dhṛtimatā sukham vindāmahe nṛpa
22. nṛpa tathā dhīmatā dhṛtimatā kuntīputreṇa
pālyamānā vayam varṣasahasrāya sukham vindāmahe
22. O king (nṛpa), similarly, (with the land/people) being protected by the intelligent (dhīmatā) and resolute (dhṛtimatā) son of Kunti (kuntīputra), we shall obtain happiness (sukham) for a thousand years.
राजर्षीणां पुराणानां भवतां वंशधारिणाम् ।
कुरुसंवरणादीनां भरतस्य च धीमतः ॥२३॥
23. rājarṣīṇāṁ purāṇānāṁ bhavatāṁ vaṁśadhāriṇām ,
kurusaṁvaraṇādīnāṁ bharatasya ca dhīmataḥ.
23. rājarṣīṇām purāṇānām bhavatām vaṃśadhāriṇām
kuru-saṃvaraṇa-ādīnām bharatasya ca dhīmataḥ
23. rājarṣīṇām purāṇānām bhavatām vaṃśadhāriṇām
kuru-saṃvaraṇa-ādīnām bharatasya ca dhīmataḥ
23. Of your ancient royal sages, the upholders of the lineage, including Kuru-Samvaraṇa and others, and of the intelligent Bharata.
वृत्तं समनुयात्येष धर्मात्मा भूरिदक्षिणः ।
नात्र वाच्यं महाराज सुसूक्ष्ममपि विद्यते ॥२४॥
24. vṛttaṁ samanuyātyeṣa dharmātmā bhūridakṣiṇaḥ ,
nātra vācyaṁ mahārāja susūkṣmamapi vidyate.
24. vṛttam samanuyāti eṣaḥ dharmātmā bhūri-dakṣiṇaḥ
na atra vācyam mahārāja susūkṣmam api vidyate
24. eṣaḥ dharmātmā bhūri-dakṣiṇaḥ vṛttam samanuyāti
mahārāja atra susūkṣmam ca vācyam na vidyate
24. This person, whose soul is dedicated to natural law (dharma), and who gives lavish gifts, follows that noble conduct. There is nothing to be said here, O great king, not even the slightest point.
उषिताः स्म सुखं नित्यं भवता परिपालिताः ।
सुसूक्ष्मं च व्यलीकं ते सपुत्रस्य न विद्यते ॥२५॥
25. uṣitāḥ sma sukhaṁ nityaṁ bhavatā paripālitāḥ ,
susūkṣmaṁ ca vyalīkaṁ te saputrasya na vidyate.
25. uṣitāḥ sma sukham nityam bhavatā paripālitāḥ
susūkṣmam ca vyalīkam te sa-putrasya na vidyate
25. bhavatā paripālitāḥ nityam sukham uṣitāḥ sma te
sa-putrasya susūkṣmam ca vyalīkam na vidyate
25. Protected by you, we have always lived happily. No fault, not even the slightest, is found with you and your son.
यत्तु ज्ञातिविमर्देऽस्मिन्नात्थ दुर्योधनं प्रति ।
भवन्तमनुनेष्यामि तत्रापि कुरुनन्दन ॥२६॥
26. yattu jñātivimarde'sminnāttha duryodhanaṁ prati ,
bhavantamanuneṣyāmi tatrāpi kurunandana.
26. yat tu jñāti-vimarde asmin āttha duryodhanam
prati bhavantam anuneṣyāmi tatra api kuru-nandana
26. kuru-nandana,
asmin jñāti-vimarde yat tu duryodhanam prati āttha,
tatra api bhavantam anuneṣyāmi
26. But regarding what you say about Duryodhana in this conflict among kinsmen, even on that point, O delight of the Kurus, I will endeavor to persuade you.
