धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
ब्रूहि भूयो महाबुद्धे धर्मार्थसहितं वचः ।
शृण्वतो नास्ति मे तृप्तिर्विचित्राणीह भाषसे ॥१॥

1. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
brūhi bhūyo mahābuddhe dharmārthasahitaṁ vacaḥ ,
śṛṇvato nāsti me tṛptirvicitrāṇīha bhāṣase.
brūhi bhūyo mahābuddhe dharmārthasahitaṁ vacaḥ ,
śṛṇvato nāsti me tṛptirvicitrāṇīha bhāṣase.

dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca brūhi bhūyaḥ mahābuddhe dharmārthasahitaṃ
vacaḥ śṛṇvataḥ na asti me tṛptiḥ vicitrāṇi iha bhāṣase
vacaḥ śṛṇvataḥ na asti me tṛptiḥ vicitrāṇi iha bhāṣase

Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "O highly intelligent one, please speak further words that align with natural law (dharma) and purpose. As I listen, I am not satisfied, for you speak such remarkable things."
विदुर उवाच ।
सर्वतीर्थेषु वा स्नानं सर्वभूतेषु चार्जवम् ।
उभे एते समे स्यातामार्जवं वा विशिष्यते ॥२॥
सर्वतीर्थेषु वा स्नानं सर्वभूतेषु चार्जवम् ।
उभे एते समे स्यातामार्जवं वा विशिष्यते ॥२॥
2. vidura uvāca ,
sarvatīrtheṣu vā snānaṁ sarvabhūteṣu cārjavam ,
ubhe ete same syātāmārjavaṁ vā viśiṣyate.
sarvatīrtheṣu vā snānaṁ sarvabhūteṣu cārjavam ,
ubhe ete same syātāmārjavaṁ vā viśiṣyate.

viduraḥ uvāca sarvatīrtheṣu vā snānaṃ sarvabhūteṣu
ca ārjavam ubhe ete same syātām ārjavaṃ vā viśiṣyate
ca ārjavam ubhe ete same syātām ārjavaṃ vā viśiṣyate

Vidura said: "Bathing in all holy places and sincerity towards all beings - both of these might be considered equal. Yet, sincerity (ārjava) is superior."
आर्जवं प्रतिपद्यस्व पुत्रेषु सततं विभो ।
इह कीर्तिं परां प्राप्य प्रेत्य स्वर्गमवाप्स्यसि ॥३॥

3. ārjavaṁ pratipadyasva putreṣu satataṁ vibho ,
iha kīrtiṁ parāṁ prāpya pretya svargamavāpsyasi.

O lord, always maintain straightforwardness towards your sons. By achieving great renown in this world, you will attain heaven after death.
यावत्कीर्तिर्मनुष्यस्य पुण्या लोकेषु गीयते ।
तावत्स पुरुषव्याघ्र स्वर्गलोके महीयते ॥४॥

4. yāvatkīrtirmanuṣyasya puṇyā lokeṣu gīyate ,
tāvatsa puruṣavyāghra svargaloke mahīyate.

yāvat kīrtiḥ manuṣyasya puṇyā lokeṣu gīyate
tāvat saḥ puruṣavyāghraḥ svargaloke mahīyate

As long as a person's meritorious fame is sung in the worlds, so long is that outstanding individual (puruṣavyāghra) glorified in the heavenly realm.
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
विरोचनस्य संवादं केशिन्यर्थे सुधन्वना ॥५॥

5. atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam ,
virocanasya saṁvādaṁ keśinyarthe sudhanvanā.

In this regard, they also narrate this ancient story (itihāsa): the dialogue between Virocana and Sudhanvan concerning Keśinī.
केशिन्युवाच ।
किं ब्राह्मणाः स्विच्छ्रेयांसो दितिजाः स्विद्विरोचन ।
अथ केन स्म पर्यङ्कं सुधन्वा नाधिरोहति ॥६॥
किं ब्राह्मणाः स्विच्छ्रेयांसो दितिजाः स्विद्विरोचन ।
अथ केन स्म पर्यङ्कं सुधन्वा नाधिरोहति ॥६॥
6. keśinyuvāca ,
kiṁ brāhmaṇāḥ svicchreyāṁso ditijāḥ svidvirocana ,
atha kena sma paryaṅkaṁ sudhanvā nādhirohati.
kiṁ brāhmaṇāḥ svicchreyāṁso ditijāḥ svidvirocana ,
atha kena sma paryaṅkaṁ sudhanvā nādhirohati.

keśini uvāca kim brāhmaṇāḥ svit śreyāṃsaḥ ditijāḥ svit

Keśinī asked: 'O Virocana, which are superior: the Brahmins or the Daityas (ditijāḥ)? And why did Sudhanvan not sit on the couch?'
विरोचन उवाच ।
प्राजापत्या हि वै श्रेष्ठा वयं केशिनि सत्तमाः ।
अस्माकं खल्विमे लोकाः के देवाः के द्विजातयः ॥७॥
प्राजापत्या हि वै श्रेष्ठा वयं केशिनि सत्तमाः ।
अस्माकं खल्विमे लोकाः के देवाः के द्विजातयः ॥७॥
7. virocana uvāca ,
prājāpatyā hi vai śreṣṭhā vayaṁ keśini sattamāḥ ,
asmākaṁ khalvime lokāḥ ke devāḥ ke dvijātayaḥ.
prājāpatyā hi vai śreṣṭhā vayaṁ keśini sattamāḥ ,
asmākaṁ khalvime lokāḥ ke devāḥ ke dvijātayaḥ.

Virocana said: 'Indeed, O Keśinī, we, the descendants of Prajāpati, are certainly the most excellent and superior. These worlds truly belong to us. Who are the gods, and who are these 'twice-born' (dvijātayaḥ)?'
केशिन्युवाच ।
इहैवास्स्व प्रतीक्षाव उपस्थाने विरोचन ।
सुधन्वा प्रातरागन्ता पश्येयं वां समागतौ ॥८॥
इहैवास्स्व प्रतीक्षाव उपस्थाने विरोचन ।
सुधन्वा प्रातरागन्ता पश्येयं वां समागतौ ॥८॥
8. keśinyuvāca ,
ihaivāssva pratīkṣāva upasthāne virocana ,
sudhanvā prātarāgantā paśyeyaṁ vāṁ samāgatau.

keśini uvāca iha eva assva pratīkṣāva upasthāne

Keśinī said, "Virocana, stay right here. We will wait for Sudhanvan. He will arrive in the morning, and I wish to see you both together."
विरोचन उवाच ।
तथा भद्रे करिष्यामि यथा त्वं भीरु भाषसे ।
सुधन्वानं च मां चैव प्रातर्द्रष्टासि संगतौ ॥९॥
तथा भद्रे करिष्यामि यथा त्वं भीरु भाषसे ।
सुधन्वानं च मां चैव प्रातर्द्रष्टासि संगतौ ॥९॥
9. virocana uvāca ,
tathā bhadre kariṣyāmi yathā tvaṁ bhīru bhāṣase ,
sudhanvānaṁ ca māṁ caiva prātardraṣṭāsi saṁgatau.
tathā bhadre kariṣyāmi yathā tvaṁ bhīru bhāṣase ,
sudhanvānaṁ ca māṁ caiva prātardraṣṭāsi saṁgatau.

virocana uvāca tathā bhadre kariṣyāmi yathā tvaṃ bhīru
bhāṣase sudhanvānaṃ ca māṃ ca eva prātar draṣṭā asi saṃgatau
bhāṣase sudhanvānaṃ ca māṃ ca eva prātar draṣṭā asi saṃgatau

Virocana said, "Dear one, I will do as you, O timid one, say. Indeed, you will see Sudhanvan and me together in the morning."
सुधन्वोवाच ।
अन्वालभे हिरण्मयं प्राह्रादेऽहं तवासनम् ।
एकत्वमुपसंपन्नो न त्वासेयं त्वया सह ॥१०॥
अन्वालभे हिरण्मयं प्राह्रादेऽहं तवासनम् ।
एकत्वमुपसंपन्नो न त्वासेयं त्वया सह ॥१०॥
10. sudhanvovāca ,
anvālabhe hiraṇmayaṁ prāhrāde'haṁ tavāsanam ,
ekatvamupasaṁpanno na tvāseyaṁ tvayā saha.
anvālabhe hiraṇmayaṁ prāhrāde'haṁ tavāsanam ,
ekatvamupasaṁpanno na tvāseyaṁ tvayā saha.

sudhanvā uvāca anvālabhe hiraṇmayaṃ prāhrāde ahaṃ tava
āsanam ekatvaṃ upasaṃpannaḥ na tvā āseyaṃ tvayā saha
āsanam ekatvaṃ upasaṃpannaḥ na tvā āseyaṃ tvayā saha
10.
Sudhanvan said, "O son of Prahlāda (Virocana), I do not touch your golden seat. Having attained oneness (ekatvam) (equality), I will not sit with you."
विरोचन उवाच ।
अन्वाहरन्तु फलकं कूर्चं वाप्यथ वा बृसीम् ।
सुधन्वन्न त्वमर्होऽसि मया सह समासनम् ॥११॥
अन्वाहरन्तु फलकं कूर्चं वाप्यथ वा बृसीम् ।
सुधन्वन्न त्वमर्होऽसि मया सह समासनम् ॥११॥
11. virocana uvāca ,
anvāharantu phalakaṁ kūrcaṁ vāpyatha vā bṛsīm ,
sudhanvanna tvamarho'si mayā saha samāsanam.
anvāharantu phalakaṁ kūrcaṁ vāpyatha vā bṛsīm ,
sudhanvanna tvamarho'si mayā saha samāsanam.
11.
virocana uvāca anvāharantu phalakaṃ kūrcaṃ vā api atha
vā bṛsīṃ sudhanvan na tvaṃ arhaḥ asi mayā saha samāsanam
vā bṛsīṃ sudhanvan na tvaṃ arhaḥ asi mayā saha samāsanam
11.
Virocana said, "Let them bring a wooden plank, or a cushion of grass, or a special seat. O Sudhanvan, you are not worthy of sitting together with me."
सुधन्वोवाच ।
पितापि ते समासीनमुपासीतैव मामधः ।
बालः सुखैधितो गेहे न त्वं किंचन बुध्यसे ॥१२॥
पितापि ते समासीनमुपासीतैव मामधः ।
बालः सुखैधितो गेहे न त्वं किंचन बुध्यसे ॥१२॥
12. sudhanvovāca ,
pitāpi te samāsīnamupāsītaiva māmadhaḥ ,
bālaḥ sukhaidhito gehe na tvaṁ kiṁcana budhyase.
pitāpi te samāsīnamupāsītaiva māmadhaḥ ,
bālaḥ sukhaidhito gehe na tvaṁ kiṁcana budhyase.
12.
sudhanvaḥ uvāca pitā api te samāsīnam upāsīta eva mām
adhaḥ bālaḥ sukha-edhitaḥ gehe na tvam kiñcana budhyase
adhaḥ bālaḥ sukha-edhitaḥ gehe na tvam kiñcana budhyase

Sudhanvan said: 'Even your father would sit below me to show respect. You are just a child, brought up in comfort at home, and you understand nothing at all.'
विरोचन उवाच ।
हिरण्यं च गवाश्वं च यद्वित्तमसुरेषु नः ।
सुधन्वन्विपणे तेन प्रश्नं पृच्छाव ये विदुः ॥१३॥
हिरण्यं च गवाश्वं च यद्वित्तमसुरेषु नः ।
सुधन्वन्विपणे तेन प्रश्नं पृच्छाव ये विदुः ॥१३॥
13. virocana uvāca ,
hiraṇyaṁ ca gavāśvaṁ ca yadvittamasureṣu naḥ ,
sudhanvanvipaṇe tena praśnaṁ pṛcchāva ye viduḥ.
hiraṇyaṁ ca gavāśvaṁ ca yadvittamasureṣu naḥ ,
sudhanvanvipaṇe tena praśnaṁ pṛcchāva ye viduḥ.

virocanaḥ uvāca hiraṇyam ca go-aśvam ca yat vittam asureṣu
naḥ sudhanvan vipaṇe tena praśnam pṛcchāva ye viduḥ
naḥ sudhanvan vipaṇe tena praśnam pṛcchāva ye viduḥ

Virocana said: 'O Sudhanvan, let us make a wager with all the gold, cows, and horses - indeed, all the wealth that belongs to us asuras. Then, with that wager, let us ask a question to those who are wise.'
सुधन्वोवाच ।
हिरण्यं च गवाश्वं च तवैवास्तु विरोचन ।
प्राणयोस्तु पणं कृत्वा प्रश्नं पृच्छाव ये विदुः ॥१४॥
हिरण्यं च गवाश्वं च तवैवास्तु विरोचन ।
प्राणयोस्तु पणं कृत्वा प्रश्नं पृच्छाव ये विदुः ॥१४॥
14. sudhanvovāca ,
hiraṇyaṁ ca gavāśvaṁ ca tavaivāstu virocana ,
prāṇayostu paṇaṁ kṛtvā praśnaṁ pṛcchāva ye viduḥ.
hiraṇyaṁ ca gavāśvaṁ ca tavaivāstu virocana ,
prāṇayostu paṇaṁ kṛtvā praśnaṁ pṛcchāva ye viduḥ.

sudhanvaḥ uvāca hiraṇyam ca go-aśvam ca tava eva astu
virocana prāṇayoḥ tu paṇam kṛtvā praśnam pṛcchāva ye viduḥ
virocana prāṇayoḥ tu paṇam kṛtvā praśnam pṛcchāva ye viduḥ
14.
Sudhanvan said: 'O Virocana, let the gold, cows, and horses be entirely yours. But let us place our lives (prāṇa) as the wager, and then ask a question to those who are wise.'
विरोचन उवाच ।
आवां कुत्र गमिष्यावः प्राणयोर्विपणे कृते ।
न हि देवेष्वहं स्थाता न मनुष्येषु कर्हिचित् ॥१५॥
आवां कुत्र गमिष्यावः प्राणयोर्विपणे कृते ।
न हि देवेष्वहं स्थाता न मनुष्येषु कर्हिचित् ॥१५॥
15. virocana uvāca ,
āvāṁ kutra gamiṣyāvaḥ prāṇayorvipaṇe kṛte ,
na hi deveṣvahaṁ sthātā na manuṣyeṣu karhicit.
āvāṁ kutra gamiṣyāvaḥ prāṇayorvipaṇe kṛte ,
na hi deveṣvahaṁ sthātā na manuṣyeṣu karhicit.

virocanaḥ uvāca āvām kutra gamiṣyāvaḥ prāṇayoḥ vipaṇe
kṛte na hi deveṣu aham sthātā na manuṣyeṣu karhicit
kṛte na hi deveṣu aham sthātā na manuṣyeṣu karhicit

Virocana said: 'Where shall we two go once our lives (prāṇa) are staked as a wager? For I certainly will not remain among the gods, nor ever among men!'
सुधन्वोवाच ।
पितरं ते गमिष्यावः प्राणयोर्विपणे कृते ।
पुत्रस्यापि स हेतोर्हि प्रह्रादो नानृतं वदेत् ॥१६॥
पितरं ते गमिष्यावः प्राणयोर्विपणे कृते ।
पुत्रस्यापि स हेतोर्हि प्रह्रादो नानृतं वदेत् ॥१६॥
16. sudhanvovāca ,
pitaraṁ te gamiṣyāvaḥ prāṇayorvipaṇe kṛte ,
putrasyāpi sa hetorhi prahrādo nānṛtaṁ vadet.
pitaraṁ te gamiṣyāvaḥ prāṇayorvipaṇe kṛte ,
putrasyāpi sa hetorhi prahrādo nānṛtaṁ vadet.

sudhanvā uvāca pitaram te gamiṣyāvaḥ prāṇayoḥ vipaṇe
kṛte putrasya api saḥ hetoḥ hi prahrādaḥ na anṛtam vadet
kṛte putrasya api saḥ hetoḥ hi prahrādaḥ na anṛtam vadet
16.
Sudhanvan said: "We two will go to your father, having staked our lives. Indeed, even for his son's sake, Prahlāda would not speak a lie."
प्रह्राद उवाच ।
इमौ तौ संप्रदृश्येते याभ्यां न चरितं सह ।
आशीविषाविव क्रुद्धावेकमार्गमिहागतौ ॥१७॥
इमौ तौ संप्रदृश्येते याभ्यां न चरितं सह ।
आशीविषाविव क्रुद्धावेकमार्गमिहागतौ ॥१७॥
17. prahrāda uvāca ,
imau tau saṁpradṛśyete yābhyāṁ na caritaṁ saha ,
āśīviṣāviva kruddhāvekamārgamihāgatau.
imau tau saṁpradṛśyete yābhyāṁ na caritaṁ saha ,
āśīviṣāviva kruddhāvekamārgamihāgatau.

prahrādaḥ uvāca imau tau saṃpradṛśyete yābhyām na
caritam saha āśīviṣau iva kruddhau ekamārgam iha āgatau
caritam saha āśīviṣau iva kruddhau ekamārgam iha āgatau

Prahlāda said: "These two are seen here, by whom no common action has been performed. They are like two enraged poisonous snakes who have come onto the same path."
किं वै सहैव चरतो न पुरा चरतः सह ।
विरोचनैतत्पृच्छामि किं ते सख्यं सुधन्वना ॥१८॥

18. kiṁ vai sahaiva carato na purā carataḥ saha ,
virocanaitatpṛcchāmi kiṁ te sakhyaṁ sudhanvanā.

kim vai saha eva carataḥ na purā carataḥ saha
virocana etat pṛcchāmi kim te sakhyam sudhanvanā

Why indeed do you two move about together now, when you did not do so before? O Virocana, I ask you this: what friendship do you have with Sudhanvan?
विरोचन उवाच ।
न मे सुधन्वना सख्यं प्राणयोर्विपणावहे ।
प्रह्राद तत्त्वां पृच्छामि मा प्रश्नमनृतं वदीः ॥१९॥
न मे सुधन्वना सख्यं प्राणयोर्विपणावहे ।
प्रह्राद तत्त्वां पृच्छामि मा प्रश्नमनृतं वदीः ॥१९॥
19. virocana uvāca ,
na me sudhanvanā sakhyaṁ prāṇayorvipaṇāvahe ,
prahrāda tattvāṁ pṛcchāmi mā praśnamanṛtaṁ vadīḥ.
na me sudhanvanā sakhyaṁ prāṇayorvipaṇāvahe ,
prahrāda tattvāṁ pṛcchāmi mā praśnamanṛtaṁ vadīḥ.

virocanaḥ uvāca na me sudhanvanā sakhyam prāṇayoḥ vipaṇāvahe
prahrāda tat tvām pṛcchāmi mā praśnam anṛtam vadīḥ
prahrāda tat tvām pṛcchāmi mā praśnam anṛtam vadīḥ

Virocana said: "I have no friendship with Sudhanvan; we two stake our lives. O Prahlāda, I ask you this: do not speak a lie regarding the question."
प्रह्राद उवाच ।
उदकं मधुपर्कं चाप्यानयन्तु सुधन्वने ।
ब्रह्मन्नभ्यर्चनीयोऽसि श्वेता गौः पीवरीकृता ॥२०॥
उदकं मधुपर्कं चाप्यानयन्तु सुधन्वने ।
ब्रह्मन्नभ्यर्चनीयोऽसि श्वेता गौः पीवरीकृता ॥२०॥
20. prahrāda uvāca ,
udakaṁ madhuparkaṁ cāpyānayantu sudhanvane ,
brahmannabhyarcanīyo'si śvetā gauḥ pīvarīkṛtā.
udakaṁ madhuparkaṁ cāpyānayantu sudhanvane ,
brahmannabhyarcanīyo'si śvetā gauḥ pīvarīkṛtā.
20.
prahrādaḥ uvāca udakam madhuparkam ca api ānayantu
sudhanvane brahman abhyarcanīyaḥ asi śvetā gauḥ pīvarīkṛtā
sudhanvane brahman abhyarcanīyaḥ asi śvetā gauḥ pīvarīkṛtā

Prahlāda said: "Let them bring water and *madhuparka* (a respectful offering) for Sudhanvan. O Brāhmaṇa, you are worthy of veneration, and a white cow has been fattened (for you)."
सुधन्वोवाच ।
उदकं मधुपर्कं च पथ एवार्पितं मम ।
प्रह्राद त्वं तु नौ प्रश्नं तथ्यं प्रब्रूहि पृच्छतोः ॥२१॥
उदकं मधुपर्कं च पथ एवार्पितं मम ।
प्रह्राद त्वं तु नौ प्रश्नं तथ्यं प्रब्रूहि पृच्छतोः ॥२१॥
21. sudhanvovāca ,
udakaṁ madhuparkaṁ ca patha evārpitaṁ mama ,
prahrāda tvaṁ tu nau praśnaṁ tathyaṁ prabrūhi pṛcchatoḥ.
udakaṁ madhuparkaṁ ca patha evārpitaṁ mama ,
prahrāda tvaṁ tu nau praśnaṁ tathyaṁ prabrūhi pṛcchatoḥ.
21.
sudhanvaḥ uvāca udakam madhuparkam ca pathaḥ eva arpitam
mama prahrāda tvam tu nau praśnam tathyām prabrūhi pṛcchatoḥ
mama prahrāda tvam tu nau praśnam tathyām prabrūhi pṛcchatoḥ

Sudhanvan said: "Water and *madhuparka* (a respectful offering) have already been offered to me on the way. But, O Prahlāda, you must truly answer our question, as we are asking."
प्रह्राद उवाच ।
पुत्रो वान्यो भवान्ब्रह्मन्साक्ष्ये चैव भवेत्स्थितः ।
तयोर्विवदतोः प्रश्नं कथमस्मद्विधो वदेत् ॥२२॥
पुत्रो वान्यो भवान्ब्रह्मन्साक्ष्ये चैव भवेत्स्थितः ।
तयोर्विवदतोः प्रश्नं कथमस्मद्विधो वदेत् ॥२२॥
22. prahrāda uvāca ,
putro vānyo bhavānbrahmansākṣye caiva bhavetsthitaḥ ,

Prahlāda said: "O Brāhmaṇa, if you are a son or indeed another (relative) positioned as a witness for those two disputing parties, how can someone like me speak on their question?"

एतत्सुधन्वन्पृच्छामि दुर्विवक्ता स्म किं वसेत् ॥२३॥

Now, O Sudhanvan, I ask you this: What fate would indeed befall a poor speaker who would certainly not declare the truth, nor even a falsehood?

यां च भाराभितप्ताङ्गो दुर्विवक्ता स्म तां वसेत् ॥२४॥

Sudhanvan said: One should indeed endure such a night as that experienced by a woman whose husband has taken another wife, or one defeated in a dice game, or one whose body is tormented by a heavy burden, or one who has spoken ill.

Telling a lie (anṛta) about animals (paśu) destroys five lives; about cows, it destroys ten; about horses, a hundred; and about human beings (puruṣa), a thousand.

सर्वं भूम्यनृते हन्ति मा स्म भूम्यनृतं वदीः ॥२७॥

Telling a lie for the sake of gold (hiraṇya) destroys both those who are born and those yet to be born. Telling a lie about land destroys everything. Therefore, never speak a lie about land!
प्रह्राद उवाच ।
मत्तः श्रेयानङ्गिरा वै सुधन्वा त्वद्विरोचन ।
मातास्य श्रेयसी मातुस्तस्मात्त्वं तेन वै जितः ॥२८॥

Prahlāda said: "O Virocana, Sudhanvā Aṅgirasa is indeed superior to me. His mother is also superior to your mother. Therefore, you are certainly defeated by him."
विरोचन सुधन्वायं प्राणानामीश्वरस्तव ।
सुधन्वन्पुनरिच्छामि त्वया दत्तं विरोचनम् ॥२९॥

O Virocana, this Sudhanvā is the master of your life (prāṇa). O Sudhanvan, I wish to have Virocana back, given by you.
सुधन्वोवाच ।
यद्धर्ममवृणीथास्त्वं न कामादनृतं वदीः ।
पुनर्ददामि ते तस्मात्पुत्रं प्रह्राद दुर्लभम् ॥३०॥

Sudhanvā said: "Because you chose righteousness (dharma) and did not speak untruth out of desire, therefore, O Prahlāda, I give back to you your son, who was difficult to obtain."
एष प्रह्राद पुत्रस्ते मया दत्तो विरोचनः ।
पादप्रक्षालनं कुर्यात्कुमार्याः संनिधौ मम ॥३१॥

O Prahlāda, this is your son Virocana, given back by me. He should wash the feet of the maiden in my presence.
विदुर उवाच ।
तस्माद्राजेन्द्र भूम्यर्थे नानृतं वक्तुमर्हसि ।
मा गमः ससुतामात्योऽत्ययं पुत्राननुभ्रमन् ॥३२॥
तस्माद्राजेन्द्र भूम्यर्थे नानृतं वक्तुमर्हसि ।

32. vidura uvāca ,
tasmādrājendra bhūmyarthe nānṛtaṁ vaktumarhasi ,
mā gamaḥ sasutāmātyo'tyayaṁ putrānanubhraman.

vidura uvāca tasmāt rājendra bhūmyarthe na anṛtam vaktum

Vidura said: "Therefore, O best of kings, you should not speak an untruth for the sake of land. Do not, by following your sons, fall into calamity along with your sons and ministers."
न देवा यष्टिमादाय रक्षन्ति पशुपालवत् ।
यं तु रक्षितुमिच्छन्ति बुद्ध्या संविभजन्ति तम् ॥३३॥

33. na devā yaṣṭimādāya rakṣanti paśupālavat ,

The gods do not protect people by taking up a staff, like a cowherd protects animals. Rather, those whom they wish to protect, they empower with intelligence (buddhi).
यथा यथा हि पुरुषः कल्याणे कुरुते मनः ।
तथा तथास्य सर्वार्थाः सिध्यन्ते नात्र संशयः ॥३४॥

34. yathā yathā hi puruṣaḥ kalyāṇe kurute manaḥ ,

Indeed, just as a person (puruṣa) directs his mind towards virtuous matters, so all his objectives are accomplished. There is no doubt about this.
न छन्दांसि वृजिनात्तारयन्ति मायाविनं मायया वर्तमानम् ।
नीडं शकुन्ता इव जातपक्षाश्छन्दांस्येनं प्रजहत्यन्तकाले ॥३५॥

35. na chandāṁsi vṛjināttārayanti; māyāvinaṁ māyayā vartamānam ,

na chandāṃsi vṛjināt tārayanti

The Vedic texts (chandas) do not rescue a deceitful person (māyāvin) who operates through illusion (māyā) from sin. Just as birds with grown wings abandon their nest, so too do the Vedic texts abandon such a person at the time of death.
मत्तापानं कलहं पूगवैरं भार्यापत्योरन्तरं ज्ञातिभेदम् ।
राजद्विष्टं स्त्रीपुमांसोर्विवादं वर्ज्यान्याहुर्यश्च पन्थाः प्रदुष्टः ॥३६॥

36. mattāpānaṁ kalahaṁ pūgavairaṁ; bhāryāpatyorantaraṁ jñātibhedam ,

matta-pānam kalaham pūga-vairam
bhāryā-patyoḥ antaram jñāti-bhedam |

varjyāni āhuḥ yaḥ ca panthāḥ pra-duṣṭaḥ
bhāryā-patyoḥ antaram jñāti-bhedam |
rāja-dviṣṭam strī-pumāṃsoḥ vivādam
varjyāni āhuḥ yaḥ ca panthāḥ pra-duṣṭaḥ
36.
They declare the following as things to be avoided: drinking by intoxicated persons, quarrels, hostility within a community, discord between husband and wife, division among relatives, actions disliked by the king, disputes between men and women, and any path that is corrupt or defiled.
सामुद्रिकं वणिजं चोरपूर्वं शलाकधूर्तं च चिकित्सकं च ।
अरिं च मित्रं च कुशीलवं च नैतान्साक्ष्येष्वधिकुर्वीत सप्त ॥३७॥

sāmudrikam vaṇijam cora-pūrvam

37.
One should not appoint these seven as witnesses: an astrologer or fortune-teller, a merchant, a former thief, a cheat who uses dice, a physician, an enemy, a friend, or an actor/dancer.
मानाग्निहोत्रमुत मानमौनं मानेनाधीतमुत मानयज्ञः ।
एतानि चत्वार्यभयंकराणि भयं प्रयच्छन्त्ययथाकृतानि ॥३८॥

The mental fire ritual (agnihotra), mental silence, study undertaken mentally, and the mental Vedic ritual (yajña) – these four, which are meant to provide safety, instead bring fear if not performed correctly.

An arsonist, a poisoner, one who eats the food of an unchaste wife, a seller of soma, an inciter of discord (or one who commercializes sacred rites), a tale-bearer, one who betrays a friend, and an adulterer (one who violates another's wife).
भ्रूणहा गुरुतल्पी च यश्च स्यात्पानपो द्विजः ।
अतितीक्ष्णश्च काकश्च नास्तिको वेदनिन्दकः ॥४०॥

A fetus-killer, one who defiles the preceptor's (guru) bed, a twice-born who drinks intoxicating liquor, an extremely malicious person, a vile person, an atheist, and one who denounces the Vedas.
स्रुवप्रग्रहणो व्रात्यः कीनाशश्चार्थवानपि ।
रक्षेत्युक्तश्च यो हिंस्यात्सर्वे ब्रह्महणैः समाः ॥४१॥

41. sruvapragrahaṇo vrātyaḥ kīnāśaścārthavānapi ,
rakṣetyuktaśca yo hiṁsyātsarve brahmahaṇaiḥ samāḥ.

sruvapragrahaṇaḥ vrātyaḥ kīnāśaḥ ca arthavān api rakṣa

41.
One who misuses the sacrificial ladle, an outcast, and a cruel person – even if he is wealthy; and one who causes harm after being told 'protect!'; all these are considered equal to killers of brahmins.
तृणोल्कया ज्ञायते जातरूपं युगे भद्रो व्यवहारेण साधुः ।
शूरो भयेष्वर्थकृच्छ्रेषु धीरः कृच्छ्रास्वापत्सु सुहृदश्चारयश्च ॥४२॥

42. tṛṇolkayā jñāyate jātarūpaṁ; yuge bhadro vyavahāreṇa sādhuḥ ,
śūro bhayeṣvarthakṛcchreṣu dhīraḥ; kṛcchrāsvāpatsu suhṛdaścārayaśca.

42.
Gold is recognized by testing with a grass-torch. A good person is known by his companionship, and a virtuous person by his conduct. A brave person is known in dangers, a resolute person in financial difficulties, and both friends and enemies (are known) in severe calamities.
जरा रूपं हरति हि धैर्यमाशा मृत्युः प्राणान्धर्मचर्यामसूया ।
क्रोधः श्रियं शीलमनार्यसेवा ह्रियं कामः सर्वमेवाभिमानः ॥४३॥

Old age, indeed, destroys beauty. Excessive desire destroys fortitude. Death destroys life. Envy destroys the practice of natural law (dharma). Anger destroys prosperity. Association with ignoble people destroys good conduct. Lust destroys modesty. And pride destroys everything.
श्रीर्मङ्गलात्प्रभवति प्रागल्भ्यात्संप्रवर्धते ।
दाक्ष्यात्तु कुरुते मूलं संयमात्प्रतितिष्ठति ॥४४॥

Prosperity originates from auspiciousness. It greatly increases through self-reliance. Furthermore, it establishes its root through skill and becomes firmly fixed through self-control.

पराक्रमश्चाबहुभाषिता च दानं यथाशक्ति कृतज्ञता च ॥४५॥

Eight qualities adorn a person (puruṣa): wisdom, noble lineage, self-restraint, erudition, valor, not speaking excessively, generosity (dāna) according to one's capacity, and gratitude.
एतान्गुणांस्तात महानुभावानेको गुणः संश्रयते प्रसह्य ।
राजा यदा सत्कुरुते मनुष्यं सर्वान्गुणानेष गुणोऽतिभाति ॥४६॥

O dear son, one quality decisively encompasses all these noble virtues. When a king honors an individual, this particular quality outshines all other virtues.

चत्वार्येषामन्ववेतानि सद्भिश्चत्वार्येषामन्ववयन्ति सन्तः ॥४७॥

O King, these eight (qualities) are reflections of the heavenly realm in the human world. Four of these are found inherent in the virtuous, and four of these the virtuous practice (or resort to).

दमः सत्यमार्जवमानृशंस्यं चत्वार्येतान्यन्ववयन्ति सन्तः ॥४८॥

The Vedic ritual (yajña), charity (dāna), study, and austerity (tapas) – these four are practiced by the virtuous. Self-restraint, truthfulness, straightforwardness, and compassion – these four are cultivated by good people.
न सा सभा यत्र न सन्ति वृद्धा न ते वृद्धा ये न वदन्ति धर्मम् ।
नासौ धर्मो यत्र न सत्यमस्ति न तत्सत्यं यच्छलेनानुविद्धम् ॥४९॥

That is not a true assembly where there are no elders. Those are not true elders who do not speak about the natural law (dharma). That is not natural law (dharma) where there is no truth. And that is not truth which is tainted by deceit.

शौर्यं च चित्रभाष्यं च दश संसर्गयोनयः ॥५०॥

Truthfulness, beauty, learning, wisdom, noble birth, good character, strength, wealth, valor, and eloquent speech – these ten are the sources of (human) association.

पुण्यं कुर्वन्पुण्यकीर्तिः पुण्यमेवाश्नुते फलम् ॥५१॥

One who commits evil (karma) and has an evil reputation (pāpakīrti) obtains only the fruit of evil. One who performs virtuous deeds and has a good reputation (puṇyakīrti) obtains only the fruit of virtue.

नष्टप्रज्ञः पापमेव नित्यमारभते नरः ॥५२॥

Sin (pāpa), when committed repeatedly, destroys one's wisdom (prajñā). A person whose wisdom (prajñā) is destroyed then invariably commits only sin (pāpa).

वृद्धप्रज्ञः पुण्यमेव नित्यमारभते नरः ॥५३॥

Merit (puṇya), when performed repeatedly, increases one's wisdom (prajñā). A person whose wisdom (prajñā) is thus increased then invariably commits only meritorious deeds (puṇya).
असूयको दन्दशूको निष्ठुरो वैरकृन्नरः ।
स कृच्छ्रं महदाप्नोति नचिरात्पापमाचरन् ॥५४॥

A person who is envious, cruel (like a venomous creature), harsh, and creates enmity, will soon experience great distress, for he engages in sinful acts (pāpa).

अकृच्छ्रात्सुखमाप्नोति सर्वत्र च विराजते ॥५५॥

A person who is not envious, whose wisdom (prajñā) is well-established, and who always performs good deeds, obtains happiness effortlessly and excels everywhere.

प्राज्ञो ह्यवाप्य धर्मार्थौ शक्नोति सुखमेधितुम् ॥५६॥

56. prajñāmevāgamayati yaḥ prājñebhyaḥ sa paṇḍitaḥ ,

He who imparts wisdom to the intelligent is considered a scholar (paṇḍitaḥ). Indeed, a wise person (prājñaḥ), having attained both righteousness (dharma) and material prosperity (artha), is capable of flourishing happily.
दिवसेनैव तत्कुर्याद्येन रात्रौ सुखं वसेत् ।
अष्टमासेन तत्कुर्याद्येन वर्षाः सुखं वसेत् ॥५७॥

57. divasenaiva tatkuryādyena rātrau sukhaṁ vaset ,

During the day, one should accomplish that by which one can live comfortably at night. Over eight months, one should accomplish that by which one can live comfortably during the rainy season (varṣāḥ).

यावज्जीवेन तत्कुर्याद्येन प्रेत्य सुखं वसेत् ॥५८॥

During the early part of one's life, one should accomplish that by which one can live comfortably in old age. Throughout one's entire life, one should accomplish that by which one can live happily after death.
जीर्णमन्नं प्रशंसन्ति भार्यां च गतयौवनाम् ।
शूरं विगतसंग्रामं गतपारं तपस्विनम् ॥५९॥

59. jīrṇamannaṁ praśaṁsanti bhāryāṁ ca gatayauvanām ,

People praise well-digested food, and a wife who has passed her youth. They also praise a warrior who has concluded his battle, and an ascetic (tapasvinam) who has reached the ultimate goal.
धनेनाधर्मलब्धेन यच्छिद्रमपिधीयते ।
असंवृतं तद्भवति ततोऽन्यदवदीर्यते ॥६०॥

60. dhanenādharmalabdhena yacchidramapidhīyate ,

Even if a flaw is concealed by wealth acquired through unrighteousness (adharma), that [flaw] becomes exposed, and consequently, something else is torn apart or breaks forth.
गुरुरात्मवतां शास्ता शास्ता राजा दुरात्मनाम् ।
अथ प्रच्छन्नपापानां शास्ता वैवस्वतो यमः ॥६१॥

61. gururātmavatāṁ śāstā śāstā rājā durātmanām ,

The preceptor (guru) is the disciplinarian for the self-controlled (ātman). The king is the punisher for the wicked. Moreover, for those with hidden sins, Vaivasvata Yama (Yama) is the punisher.
ऋषीणां च नदीनां च कुलानां च महात्मनाम् ।
प्रभवो नाधिगन्तव्यः स्त्रीणां दुश्चरितस्य च ॥६२॥

One should not try to ascertain the origin (prabhava) of sages (ṛṣi), rivers, and noble families (mahātman), nor the misconduct of women.

क्षत्रियः स्वर्गभाग्राजंश्चिरं पालयते महीम् ॥६३॥

63. dvijātipūjābhirato dātā jñātiṣu cārjavī ,
kṣatriyaḥ svargabhāgrājaṁściraṁ pālayate mahīm.

O king, a kṣatriya who delights in honoring the twice-born (dvija), is a giver, and is honest among his kinsmen, attains a share in heaven (svarga) and protects the earth for a long time.
सुवर्णपुष्पां पृथिवीं चिन्वन्ति पुरुषास्त्रयः ।
शूरश्च कृतविद्यश्च यश्च जानाति सेवितुम् ॥६४॥

64. suvarṇapuṣpāṁ pṛthivīṁ cinvanti puruṣāstrayaḥ ,

Three types of men gather wealth from the earth, which yields golden flowers: the brave, the learned, and he who knows how to serve.
बुद्धिश्रेष्ठानि कर्माणि बाहुमध्यानि भारत ।
तानि जङ्घाजघन्यानि भारप्रत्यवराणि च ॥६५॥

65. buddhiśreṣṭhāni karmāṇi bāhumadhyāni bhārata ,
tāni jaṅghājaghanyāni bhārapratyavarāṇi ca.

O descendant of Bhārata, actions (karma) are supreme when guided by intelligence, mediocre when performed by physical strength, and the lowest when they involve mere leg-work or carrying burdens.
दुर्योधने च शकुनौ मूढे दुःशासने तथा ।
कर्णे चैश्वर्यमाधाय कथं त्वं भूतिमिच्छसि ॥६६॥

66. duryodhane ca śakunau mūḍhe duḥśāsane tathā ,
karṇe caiśvaryamādhāya kathaṁ tvaṁ bhūtimicchasi.

How do you desire prosperity when you have placed power in Duryodhana, in Śakuni, in the foolish Duḥśāsana, and in Karṇa?
सर्वैर्गुणैरुपेताश्च पाण्डवा भरतर्षभ ।
पितृवत्त्वयि वर्तन्ते तेषु वर्तस्व पुत्रवत् ॥६७॥

O best among the Bhāratas, the Pāṇḍavas are endowed with all virtues and behave towards you like sons towards a father. Therefore, you too should behave towards them like a father towards his sons.
