वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु वासुदेवोऽपि वीर्यवान् ।
उपायाद्वृष्णिभिः सार्धं पुरं वारणसाह्वयम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
etasminneva kāle tu vāsudevo'pi vīryavān ,
upāyādvṛṣṇibhiḥ sārdhaṁ puraṁ vāraṇasāhvayam.

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: 'At this very time, the powerful Vāsudeva also arrived with the Vṛṣṇis at the city known as Vāraṇasā (Vārāṇasī).'
समयं वाजिमेधस्य विदित्वा पुरुषर्षभः ।
यथोक्तो धर्मपुत्रेण व्रजन्स स्वपुरीं प्रति ॥२॥
2. samayaṁ vājimedhasya viditvā puruṣarṣabhaḥ ,
yathokto dharmaputreṇa vrajansa svapurīṁ prati.

2. The chief of men (puruṣarṣabha), having learned of the time for the Vedic horse ritual (vājimedha), and as instructed by Yudhiṣṭhira (dharmaputra), proceeded towards his own city.
रौक्मिणेयेन सहितो युयुधानेन चैव ह ।
चारुदेष्णेन साम्बेन गदेन कृतवर्मणा ॥३॥
3. raukmiṇeyena sahito yuyudhānena caiva ha ,
cārudeṣṇena sāmbena gadena kṛtavarmaṇā.

3. Accompanied by Pradyumna (Raukmiṇeya), Yuyudhāna, Cārudeṣṇa, Sāmba, Gada, and Kṛtavarmā.
सारणेन च वीरेण निशठेनोल्मुकेन च ।
बलदेवं पुरस्कृत्य सुभद्रासहितस्तदा ॥४॥
4. sāraṇena ca vīreṇa niśaṭhenolmukena ca ,
baladevaṁ puraskṛtya subhadrāsahitastadā.

baladevam puraskṛtya subhadrā-sahitaḥ tadā

4. And by the heroic Sāraṇa, Niśaṭha, and Ulmuka; then, placing Baladeva (Balarāma) at the forefront, (he was) accompanied by Subhadrā.
द्रौपदीमुत्तरां चैव पृथां चाप्यवलोककः ।
समाश्वासयितुं चापि क्षत्रिया निहतेश्वराः ॥५॥
5. draupadīmuttarāṁ caiva pṛthāṁ cāpyavalokakaḥ ,
samāśvāsayituṁ cāpi kṣatriyā nihateśvarāḥ.
5. draupadīm uttarām ca eva pṛthām ca api avalokakaḥ
samāśvāsayitum ca api kṣatriyāḥ nihata-īśvarāḥ

5. And indeed, observing Draupadī, Uttarā, and Pṛthā, these Kṣatriya women whose lords (husbands) had been slain, (he came) also to console them.
तानागतान्समीक्ष्यैव धृतराष्ट्रो महीपतिः ।
प्रत्यगृह्णाद्यथान्यायं विदुरश्च महामनाः ॥६॥
6. tānāgatānsamīkṣyaiva dhṛtarāṣṭro mahīpatiḥ ,
pratyagṛhṇādyathānyāyaṁ viduraśca mahāmanāḥ.
6. tān āgatān samīkṣya eva dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ mahī-patiḥ
pratyagṛhṇāt yathā-nyāyam viduraḥ ca mahā-manāḥ
6. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ mahī-patiḥ ca mahā-manāḥ viduraḥ
eva tān āgatān samīkṣya yathā-nyāyam pratyagṛhṇāt
6. Indeed, seeing those who had arrived, King Dhṛtarāṣṭra and the noble-minded Vidura welcomed them appropriately.
तत्रैव न्यवसत्कृष्णः स्वर्चितः पुरुषर्षभः ।
विदुरेण महातेजास्तथैव च युयुत्सुना ॥७॥
7. tatraiva nyavasatkṛṣṇaḥ svarcitaḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ ,
vidureṇa mahātejāstathaiva ca yuyutsunā.
7. tatra eva nyavasat kṛṣṇaḥ su-arcitaḥ puruṣa-ṛṣabhaḥ
vidureṇa mahātejāḥ tathā eva ca yuyutsunā
7. kṛṣṇaḥ puruṣa-ṛṣabhaḥ mahātejāḥ tatra eva
su-arcitaḥ nyavasat vidureṇa ca tathā eva yuyutsunā
7. The pre-eminent man (puruṣa) Kṛṣṇa, of great splendor, remained there, well-honored by Vidura and likewise by Yuyutsu.
वसत्सु वृष्णिवीरेषु तत्राथ जनमेजय ।
जज्ञे तव पिता राजन्परिक्षित्परवीरहा ॥८॥
8. vasatsu vṛṣṇivīreṣu tatrātha janamejaya ,
jajñe tava pitā rājanparikṣitparavīrahā.
8. vasatsu vṛṣṇivīreṣu tatra atha janamejaya
jajñe tava pitā rājan parikṣit paravīrahā
8. janamejaya rājan atha vṛṣṇivīreṣu tatra

8. Then, O Janamejaya, while the Vṛṣṇi heroes were residing there, your father Parikṣit, the slayer of enemy heroes, was born.
स तु राजा महाराज ब्रह्मास्त्रेणाभिपीडितः ।
शवो बभूव निश्चेष्टो हर्षशोकविवर्धनः ॥९॥
9. sa tu rājā mahārāja brahmāstreṇābhipīḍitaḥ ,
śavo babhūva niśceṣṭo harṣaśokavivardhanaḥ.
9. saḥ tu rājā mahārāja brahmāstreṇa abhipīḍitaḥ
śavaḥ babhūva niśceṣṭaḥ harṣaśokavivardhanaḥ
9. tu saḥ rājā mahārāja brahmāstreṇa abhipīḍitaḥ
niśceṣṭaḥ harṣaśokavivardhanaḥ śavaḥ babhūva
9. But that king, O great king, afflicted by the Brahmāstra, became an inert corpse, causing an increase of joy and sorrow.
हृष्टानां सिंहनादेन जनानां तत्र निस्वनः ।
आविश्य प्रदिशः सर्वाः पुनरेव व्युपारमत् ॥१०॥
10. hṛṣṭānāṁ siṁhanādena janānāṁ tatra nisvanaḥ ,
āviśya pradiśaḥ sarvāḥ punareva vyupāramat.
10. hṛṣṭānām siṃhanādena janānām tatra nisvanaḥ
āviśya pradiśaḥ sarvāḥ punaḥ eva vi upa āramat
10. tatra hṛṣṭānām janānām siṃhanādena nisvanaḥ

10. Then, the roar-like sound made by the joyous people, having filled all directions, again ceased.
ततः सोऽतित्वरः कृष्णो विवेशान्तःपुरं तदा ।
युयुधानद्वितीयो वै व्यथितेन्द्रियमानसः ॥११॥
11. tataḥ so'titvaraḥ kṛṣṇo viveśāntaḥpuraṁ tadā ,
yuyudhānadvitīyo vai vyathitendriyamānasaḥ.
11. tataḥ saḥ atitvaraḥ kṛṣṇaḥ viveśa antaḥpuram
tadā yuyudhānadvitīyaḥ vai vyathitendriyamānasaḥ
11. tataḥ tadā saḥ atitvaraḥ kṛṣṇaḥ yuyudhānadvitīyaḥ
vai vyathitendriyamānasaḥ antaḥpuram viveśa
11. Then Krishna, in great haste, entered the inner apartments at that time, accompanied by Yuyudhana, his senses and mind greatly distressed.
ततस्त्वरितमायान्तीं ददर्श स्वां पितृष्वसाम् ।
क्रोशन्तीमभिधावेति वासुदेवं पुनः पुनः ॥१२॥
12. tatastvaritamāyāntīṁ dadarśa svāṁ pitṛṣvasām ,
krośantīmabhidhāveti vāsudevaṁ punaḥ punaḥ.
12. tataḥ tvaritam āyāntīm dadarśa svām pitṛṣvasām
krośantīm abhidhāva iti vāsudevam punaḥ punaḥ
12. tataḥ [saḥ] tvaritam āyāntīm svām pitṛṣvasām
krośantīm abhidhāva iti vāsudevam punaḥ punaḥ dadarśa
12. Then he saw his own paternal aunt swiftly approaching, repeatedly crying out to Vāsudeva (Krishna), 'Run!'
पृष्ठतो द्रौपदीं चैव सुभद्रां च यशस्विनीम् ।
सविक्रोशं सकरुणं बान्धवानां स्त्रियो नृप ॥१३॥
13. pṛṣṭhato draupadīṁ caiva subhadrāṁ ca yaśasvinīm ,
savikrośaṁ sakaruṇaṁ bāndhavānāṁ striyo nṛpa.
13. pṛṣṭhataḥ draupadīm ca eva subhadrām ca yaśasvinīm
savikrośam sakaruṇam bāndhavānām striyaḥ nṛpa
13. nṛpa pṛṣṭhataḥ draupadīm ca eva yaśasvinīm subhadrām
ca bāndhavānām striyaḥ savikrośam sakaruṇam
13. O king, behind them were Draupadi and the glorious Subhadra, and the women of the kinsmen, all lamenting piteously.
ततः कृष्णं समासाद्य कुन्ती राजसुता तदा ।
प्रोवाच राजशार्दूल बाष्पगद्गदया गिरा ॥१४॥
14. tataḥ kṛṣṇaṁ samāsādya kuntī rājasutā tadā ,
provāca rājaśārdūla bāṣpagadgadayā girā.
14. tataḥ kṛṣṇam samāsādya kuntī rājasutā tadā
provāca rājaśārdūla bāṣpagadgadayā girā
14. rājaśārdūla tataḥ tadā rājasutā kuntī kṛṣṇam

14. Then Kunti, the royal princess, having approached Krishna at that time, spoke with a voice choked with tears. O best of kings!
वासुदेव महाबाहो सुप्रजा देवकी त्वया ।
त्वं नो गतिः प्रतिष्ठा च त्वदायत्तमिदं कुलम् ॥१५॥
15. vāsudeva mahābāho suprajā devakī tvayā ,
tvaṁ no gatiḥ pratiṣṭhā ca tvadāyattamidaṁ kulam.
15. vāsudeva mahābāho suprajā devakī tvayā tvam
naḥ gatiḥ pratiṣṭhā ca tvat-āyattam idam kulam
15. vāsudeva mahābāho devakī tvayā suprajā tvam
naḥ gatiḥ ca pratiṣṭhā idam kulam tvat-āyattam
15. O mighty-armed Vāsudeva, Devaki is truly blessed with noble children through you. You are our ultimate refuge (gati) and our firm foundation; this entire family is dependent on you.
यदुप्रवीर योऽयं ते स्वस्रीयस्यात्मजः प्रभो ।
अश्वत्थाम्ना हतो जातस्तमुज्जीवय केशव ॥१६॥
16. yadupravīra yo'yaṁ te svasrīyasyātmajaḥ prabho ,
aśvatthāmnā hato jātastamujjīvaya keśava.
16. yaduprāvīra yaḥ ayam te svasrīyasya ātmajaḥ prabho
aśvatthāmnā hataḥ jātaḥ tam ujjīvaya keśava
16. yaduprāvīra prabho keśava te svasrīyasya ātmajaḥ
yaḥ ayam aśvatthāmnā hataḥ jātaḥ tam ujjīvaya
16. O foremost hero of the Yadus, O Lord Keśava, please revive this son of your nephew, who was born and then slain by Aśvatthāman.
त्वया ह्येतत्प्रतिज्ञातमैषीके यदुनन्दन ।
अहं संजीवयिष्यामि मृतं जातमिति प्रभो ॥१७॥
17. tvayā hyetatpratijñātamaiṣīke yadunandana ,
ahaṁ saṁjīvayiṣyāmi mṛtaṁ jātamiti prabho.
17. tvayā hi etat pratijñātam aiṣīke yadunandana
aham saṃjīvayiṣyāmi mṛtam jātam iti prabho
17. hi yadunandana prabho tvayā etat aiṣīke
pratijñātam iti aham mṛtam jātam saṃjīvayiṣyāmi
17. Indeed, O delight of the Yadus, O Lord, you yourself made this promise during the Aiṣīka incident: "I will bring back to life anyone born dead."
सोऽयं जातो मृतस्तात पश्यैनं पुरुषर्षभ ।
उत्तरां च सुभद्रां च द्रौपदीं मां च माधव ॥१८॥
18. so'yaṁ jāto mṛtastāta paśyainaṁ puruṣarṣabha ,
uttarāṁ ca subhadrāṁ ca draupadīṁ māṁ ca mādhava.
18. saḥ ayam jātaḥ mṛtaḥ tāta paśya enam puruṣarṣabha
uttarām ca subhadrām ca draupadīm mām ca mādhava
18. tāta puruṣarṣabha mādhava paśya enam saḥ ayam jātaḥ
mṛtaḥ ca uttarām ca subhadrām ca draupadīm ca mām
18. O dear one, O best of men, O Mādhava, look at this child who was born dead. Also behold Uttarā, Subhadrā, Draupadī, and me.
धर्मपुत्रं च भीमं च फल्गुनं नकुलं तथा ।
सहदेवं च दुर्धर्ष सर्वान्नस्त्रातुमर्हसि ॥१९॥
19. dharmaputraṁ ca bhīmaṁ ca phalgunaṁ nakulaṁ tathā ,
sahadevaṁ ca durdharṣa sarvānnastrātumarhasi.
19. dharmaputram ca bhīmam ca phalgunam nakulam tathā
sahadevam ca durdharṣa sarvān naḥ trātum arhasi
19. durdharṣa dharmaputram ca bhīmam ca phalgunam
nakulam tathā sahadevam ca sarvān naḥ trātum arhasi
19. O unconquerable one, you ought to protect all of us: Yudhishthira (the son of dharma), Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva.
अस्मिन्प्राणाः समायत्ताः पाण्डवानां ममैव च ।
पाण्डोश्च पिण्डो दाशार्ह तथैव श्वशुरस्य मे ॥२०॥
20. asminprāṇāḥ samāyattāḥ pāṇḍavānāṁ mamaiva ca ,
pāṇḍośca piṇḍo dāśārha tathaiva śvaśurasya me.
20. asmin prāṇāḥ samāyattāḥ pāṇḍavānām mama eva ca
pāṇḍoḥ ca piṇḍaḥ dāśārha tathā eva śvaśurasya me
20. dāśārha! pāṇḍavānām mama eva ca prāṇāḥ asmin samāyattāḥ.
ca pāṇḍoḥ piṇḍaḥ tathā eva me śvaśurasya (piṇḍaḥ api) asmin (samāyattāḥ)
20. In him (Abhimanyu), the lives of the Pandavas and my own are completely dependent. And, O descendant of Dasharha (Krishna), the ancestral offering (piṇḍa) for Pandu, and similarly for my father-in-law, depends on him.
अभिमन्योश्च भद्रं ते प्रियस्य सदृशस्य च ।
प्रियमुत्पादयाद्य त्वं प्रेतस्यापि जनार्दन ॥२१॥
21. abhimanyośca bhadraṁ te priyasya sadṛśasya ca ,
priyamutpādayādya tvaṁ pretasyāpi janārdana.
21. abhimanyoḥ ca bhadram te priyasya sadṛśasya ca
priyam utpādaya adya tvam pretasya api janārdana
21. janārdana! abhimanyoḥ ca priyasya ca sadṛśasya te bhadram.
tvam adya priyam utpādaya api pretasya (artham)
21. May good fortune be with you regarding Abhimanyu, who was dear and worthy. O Janardana (Krishna), today you must bring about a favorable outcome even for the departed one.
उत्तरा हि प्रियोक्तं वै कथयत्यरिसूदन ।
अभिमन्योर्वचः कृष्ण प्रियत्वात्ते न संशयः ॥२२॥
22. uttarā hi priyoktaṁ vai kathayatyarisūdana ,
abhimanyorvacaḥ kṛṣṇa priyatvātte na saṁśayaḥ.
22. uttarā hi priyoktam vai kathayati arisūdana
abhimanyoḥ vacaḥ kṛṣṇa priyatvāt te na saṃśayaḥ
22. arisūdana! uttarā hi vai priyoktam kathayati.
kṛṣṇa,
abhimanyoḥ vacaḥ priyatvāt te (kathayati),
na saṃśayaḥ.
22. O slayer of enemies, Uttara indeed recounts a cherished saying. O Krishna, there is no doubt that it is due to her affection for you that she speaks Abhimanyu's words.
अब्रवीत्किल दाशार्ह वैराटीमार्जुनिः पुरा ।
मातुलस्य कुलं भद्रे तव पुत्रो गमिष्यति ॥२३॥
23. abravītkila dāśārha vairāṭīmārjuniḥ purā ,
mātulasya kulaṁ bhadre tava putro gamiṣyati.
23. abravīt kila dāśārha vairāṭīm ārjuniḥ purā
mātulasya kulam bhadre tava putraḥ gamiṣyati
23. dāśārha bhadre purā ārjuniḥ vairāṭīm kila
abravīt tava putraḥ mātulasya kulam gamiṣyati
23. O Kṛṣṇa (dāśārha), Arjuna's son (Abhimanyu) indeed told Uttara previously: 'O auspicious one (bhadre), your son will go to his maternal uncle's family.'
गत्वा वृष्ण्यन्धककुलं धनुर्वेदं ग्रहीष्यति ।
अस्त्राणि च विचित्राणि नीतिशास्त्रं च केवलम् ॥२४॥
24. gatvā vṛṣṇyandhakakulaṁ dhanurvedaṁ grahīṣyati ,
astrāṇi ca vicitrāṇi nītiśāstraṁ ca kevalam.
24. gatvā vṛṣṇyandhakakulam dhanurvedam grahīṣyati
astrāṇi ca vicitrāṇi nītiśāstram ca kevalam
24. vṛṣṇyandhakakulam gatvā dhanurvedam vicitrāṇi
astrāṇi ca kevalam nītiśāstram ca grahīṣyati
24. Having gone to the family of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas, he will learn the science of archery and various wonderful weapons, as well as the complete science of statecraft.
इत्येतत्प्रणयात्तात सौभद्रः परवीरहा ।
कथयामास दुर्धर्षस्तथा चैतन्न संशयः ॥२५॥
25. ityetatpraṇayāttāta saubhadraḥ paravīrahā ,
kathayāmāsa durdharṣastathā caitanna saṁśayaḥ.
25. iti etat praṇayāt tāta saubhadraḥ paravīrahā
kathayām āsa durdharṣaḥ tathā ca etat na saṃśayaḥ
25. tāta durdharṣaḥ saubhadraḥ paravīrahā iti etat
praṇayāt kathayām āsa ca tathā etat na saṃśayaḥ
25. Thus, O dear one (tāta), the invincible (durdharṣaḥ) son of Subhadrā (saubhadraḥ), the slayer of mighty heroes (paravīrahā), spoke this out of affection, and there is no doubt that it is so.
तास्त्वां वयं प्रणम्येह याचामो मधुसूदन ।
कुलस्यास्य हितार्थं त्वं कुरु कल्याणमुत्तमम् ॥२६॥
26. tāstvāṁ vayaṁ praṇamyeha yācāmo madhusūdana ,
kulasyāsya hitārthaṁ tvaṁ kuru kalyāṇamuttamam.
26. tās tvām vayam praṇamya iha yācāmaḥ madhusūdana
kulasya asya hitārtham tvam kuru kalyāṇam uttamam
26. madhusūdana tās vayam iha tvām praṇamya yācāmaḥ
tvam asya kulasya hitārtham uttamam kalyāṇam kuru
26. Therefore, O Madhusūdana (madhusūdana), we bow to you here and entreat you: 'For the welfare of this family, may you bring about the highest good.'
एवमुक्त्वा तु वार्ष्णेयं पृथा पृथुललोचना ।
उच्छ्रित्य बाहू दुःखार्ता ताश्चान्याः प्रापतन्भुवि ॥२७॥
27. evamuktvā tu vārṣṇeyaṁ pṛthā pṛthulalocanā ,
ucchritya bāhū duḥkhārtā tāścānyāḥ prāpatanbhuvi.
27. evam uktvā tu vārṣṇeyam pṛthā pṛthulalocanā
ucchritya bāhū duḥkhārtā tāḥ ca anyāḥ prāpatan bhuvi
27. pṛthā pṛthulalocanā duḥkhārtā evam vārṣṇeyam uktvā
tu bāhū ucchritya ca tāḥ anyāḥ bhuvi prāpatan
27. Having thus spoken to Vārṣṇeya (Krishna), Pṛthā, wide-eyed and afflicted with sorrow, raised her arms. And those other women also fell to the ground.
अब्रुवंश्च महाराज सर्वाः सास्राविलेक्षणाः ।
स्वस्रीयो वासुदेवस्य मृतो जात इति प्रभो ॥२८॥
28. abruvaṁśca mahārāja sarvāḥ sāsrāvilekṣaṇāḥ ,
svasrīyo vāsudevasya mṛto jāta iti prabho.
28. abruvan ca mahārāja sarvāḥ sāsrāvilākṣaṇāḥ
svasrīyaḥ vāsudevasya mṛtaḥ jātaḥ iti prabho
28. mahārāja prabho ca sarvāḥ sāsrāvilākṣaṇāḥ
abruvan iti vāsudevasya svasrīyaḥ mṛtaḥ jātaḥ
28. And all of them, O great king, with tear-filled eyes, cried out, "Vāsudeva's nephew is dead, O lord!"
एवमुक्ते ततः कुन्तीं प्रत्यगृह्णाज्जनार्दनः ।
भूमौ निपतितां चैनां सान्त्वयामास भारत ॥२९॥
29. evamukte tataḥ kuntīṁ pratyagṛhṇājjanārdanaḥ ,
bhūmau nipatitāṁ caināṁ sāntvayāmāsa bhārata.
29. evam ukte tataḥ kuntīm prati agṛhṇāt janārdanaḥ
bhūmau nipatitām ca enām sāntvayāmāsa bhārata
29. bhārata evam ukte tataḥ janārdanaḥ bhūmau
nipatitām kuntīm ca enām prati agṛhṇāt sāntvayāmāsa
29. O Bhārata, when this had been said, Janārdana (Krishna) then took Kunti, who had fallen to the ground, and consoled her.
