संजय उवाच ।
इति स्म कृष्णवचनात्प्रत्युच्चार्य युधिष्ठिरम् ।
बभूव विमनाः पार्थः किंचित्कृत्वेव पातकम् ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
iti sma kṛṣṇavacanātpratyuccārya yudhiṣṭhiram ,
babhūva vimanāḥ pārthaḥ kiṁcitkṛtveva pātakam.

1. Sanjaya said: Thus, having addressed Yudhishthira in response, influenced by Krishna's words, Arjuna (Pārtha) became disheartened, as if he had committed some sin.
ततोऽब्रवीद्वासुदेवः प्रहसन्निव पाण्डवम् ।
कथं नाम भवेदेतद्यदि त्वं पार्थ धर्मजम् ।
असिना तीक्ष्णधारेण हन्या धर्मे व्यवस्थितम् ॥२॥
2. tato'bravīdvāsudevaḥ prahasanniva pāṇḍavam ,
kathaṁ nāma bhavedetadyadi tvaṁ pārtha dharmajam ,
asinā tīkṣṇadhāreṇa hanyā dharme vyavasthitam.
2. tataḥ abravīt vāsudevaḥ prahasan iva
pāṇḍavam | katham nāma bhavet etat
yadi tvam pārtha dharmajām | asinā
tīkṣṇadhāreṇa hanyāḥ dharme vyavasthitam
2. tataḥ vāsudevaḥ prahasan iva pāṇḍavam abravīt pārtha,
yadi tvam tīkṣṇadhāreṇa asinā dharme vyavasthitam dharmajām hanyāḥ,
etat katham nāma bhavet
2. Then Vasudeva (Krishna), as if smiling, said to Arjuna (Pāṇḍava): "How could this possibly happen, if you, Arjuna (Pārtha), were to strike down Yudhishthira (Dharmaja), who is established in righteousness (dharma), with a sharp-edged sword?"
त्वमित्युक्त्वैव राजानमेवं कश्मलमाविशः ।
हत्वा तु नृपतिं पार्थ अकरिष्यः किमुत्तरम् ।
एवं सुदुर्विदो धर्मो मन्दप्रज्ञैर्विशेषतः ॥३॥
3. tvamityuktvaiva rājānamevaṁ kaśmalamāviśaḥ ,
hatvā tu nṛpatiṁ pārtha akariṣyaḥ kimuttaram ,
evaṁ sudurvido dharmo mandaprajñairviśeṣataḥ.
3. tvam iti uktvā eva rājānam evam kaśmalam
āviśaḥ | hatvā tu nṛpatim pārtha
akariṣyaḥ kim uttaram | evam sudurvidaḥ
dharmaḥ mandaprajñaiḥ viśeṣataḥ
3. tvam iti uktvā eva rājānam evam kaśmalam āviśaḥ pārtha,
nṛpatim hatvā tu kim uttaram akariṣyaḥ evam dharmaḥ mandaprajñaiḥ viśeṣataḥ sudurvidaḥ (asti)
3. Having thus said 'you' to the king, you (Arjuna) entered into such a state of despondency. But if you, Arjuna (Pārtha), were to kill the king, what would be the consequence? Indeed, the principle of natural law (dharma) is very difficult to know, especially for those of dull intellect.
स भवान्धर्मभीरुत्वाद्ध्रुवमैष्यन्महत्तमः ।
नरकं घोररूपं च भ्रातुर्ज्येष्ठस्य वै वधात् ॥४॥
4. sa bhavāndharmabhīrutvāddhruvamaiṣyanmahattamaḥ ,
narakaṁ ghorarūpaṁ ca bhrāturjyeṣṭhasya vai vadhāt.
4. sa bhavān dharmabhīrutvāt dhruvam aiṣyan mahattamaḥ
| narakam ghorarūpam ca bhrātuḥ jyeṣṭhasya vai vadhāt
4. sa bhavān dharmabhīrutvāt jyeṣṭhasya bhrātuḥ vadhāt
dhruvam mahattamaḥ ghorarūpam ca narakam aiṣyan vai
4. You, sir, being afraid of transgressing natural law (dharma), would certainly attain the most terrible, dreadful hell by killing your eldest brother.
स त्वं धर्मभृतां श्रेष्ठं राजानं धर्मसंहितम् ।
प्रसादय कुरुश्रेष्ठमेतदत्र मतं मम ॥५॥
5. sa tvaṁ dharmabhṛtāṁ śreṣṭhaṁ rājānaṁ dharmasaṁhitam ,
prasādaya kuruśreṣṭhametadatra mataṁ mama.
5. sa tvam dharmabhṛtām śreṣṭham rājānam dharmasaṃhitam
| prasāday kuruśreṣṭham etat atra matam mama
5. kuruśreṣṭham tvam sa dharmabhṛtām śreṣṭham
dharmasaṃhitam rājānam prasāday etat atra mama matam
5. O best of the Kurus, you should propitiate that king, who is the foremost among the upholders of natural law (dharma) and is himself righteous (dharmasaṃhitam). This is my opinion on this matter.
प्रसाद्य भक्त्या राजानं प्रीतं चैव युधिष्ठिरम् ।
प्रयामस्त्वरिता योद्धुं सूतपुत्ररथं प्रति ॥६॥
6. prasādya bhaktyā rājānaṁ prītaṁ caiva yudhiṣṭhiram ,
prayāmastvaritā yoddhuṁ sūtaputrarathaṁ prati.
6. prasādya bhaktyā rājānam prītam ca eva yudhiṣṭhiram
| prayāmaḥ tvaritā yoddhum sūtaputraratham prati
6. bhaktyā prītam ca eva rājānam yudhiṣṭhiram prasādya

6. Having propitiated King Yudhiṣṭhira with devotion (bhakti) and made him pleased, let us quickly proceed to fight towards the chariot of the son of Sūta (Karṇa).
हत्वा सुदुर्जयं कर्णं त्वमद्य निशितैः शरैः ।
विपुलां प्रीतिमाधत्स्व धर्मपुत्रस्य मानद ॥७॥
7. hatvā sudurjayaṁ karṇaṁ tvamadya niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
vipulāṁ prītimādhatsva dharmaputrasya mānada.
7. hatvā sudurjayam karṇam tvam adya niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
| vipulām prītim ādhatsva dharmaputrasya mānada
7. mānada tvam adya niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ sudurjayam karṇam

7. O giver of honor (mānada), having killed Karṇa, who is very difficult to conquer, with your sharp arrows today, you should bring great joy to the son of Dharma (natural law) (dharmaputra).
एतदत्र महाबाहो प्राप्तकालं मतं मम ।
एवं कृते कृतं चैव तव कार्यं भविष्यति ॥८॥
8. etadatra mahābāho prāptakālaṁ mataṁ mama ,
evaṁ kṛte kṛtaṁ caiva tava kāryaṁ bhaviṣyati.
8. etat atra mahābāho prāptakālam matam mama |
evam kṛte kṛtam ca eva tava kāryam bhaviṣyati
8. mahābāho etat atra mama prāptakālam matam
evam kṛte ca eva tava kāryam kṛtam bhaviṣyati
8. O mighty-armed one (mahābāho), this opinion of mine is timely here. When this is done, your objective will indeed be accomplished.
ततोऽर्जुनो महाराज लज्जया वै समन्वितः ।
धर्मराजस्य चरणौ प्रपेदे शिरसानघ ॥९॥
9. tato'rjuno mahārāja lajjayā vai samanvitaḥ ,
dharmarājasya caraṇau prapede śirasānagha.
9. tataḥ arjunaḥ mahārāja lajjayā vai samanvitaḥ
dharmarājasya caraṇau prapede śirasā anagha
9. mahārāja anagha tataḥ lajjayā vai samanvitaḥ
arjunaḥ dharmarājasya caraṇau śirasā prapede
9. Then, O great king, O sinless one, Arjuna, filled with shame, indeed bowed his head at the feet of the king of natural law (dharma).
उवाच भरतश्रेष्ठ प्रसीदेति पुनः पुनः ।
क्षमस्व राजन्यत्प्रोक्तं धर्मकामेन भीरुणा ॥१०॥
10. uvāca bharataśreṣṭha prasīdeti punaḥ punaḥ ,
kṣamasva rājanyatproktaṁ dharmakāmena bhīruṇā.
10. uvāca bharataśreṣṭha prasīda iti punaḥ punaḥ
kṣamasva rājan yat proktam dharmakāmena bhīruṇā
10. bharataśreṣṭha punaḥ punaḥ iti uvāca rājan
yat dharmakāmena bhīruṇā proktam tat kṣamasva
10. O best among the Bhāratas, he (Arjuna) said again and again, 'Be gracious! O king, forgive what was spoken by a fearful person desiring natural law (dharma).'
पादयोः पतितं दृष्ट्वा धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
धनंजयममित्रघ्नं रुदन्तं भरतर्षभ ॥११॥
11. pādayoḥ patitaṁ dṛṣṭvā dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
dhanaṁjayamamitraghnaṁ rudantaṁ bharatarṣabha.
11. pādayoḥ patitam dṛṣṭvā dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
dhanañjayam amitraghnam rudantam bharatarṣabha
11. bharatarṣabha dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ dhanañjayam
amitraghnam pādayoḥ patitam rudantam ca dṛṣṭvā
11. O best among the Bhāratas, upon seeing Dhananjaya, the slayer of foes, the king of natural law (dharma) Yudhiṣṭhira, weeping and fallen at his feet -
उत्थाप्य भ्रातरं राजा धर्मराजो धनंजयम् ।
समाश्लिष्य च सस्नेहं प्ररुरोद महीपतिः ॥१२॥
12. utthāpya bhrātaraṁ rājā dharmarājo dhanaṁjayam ,
samāśliṣya ca sasnehaṁ praruroda mahīpatiḥ.
12. utthāpya bhrātaram rājā dharmarājaḥ dhanañjayam
samāśliṣya ca sasneham praruroda mahīpatiḥ
12. rājā dharmarājaḥ mahīpatiḥ bhrātaram dhanañjayam
utthāpya ca sasneham samāśliṣya praruroda
12. The king, Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of natural law (dharma), having lifted up his brother Dhananjaya and affectionately embraced him, that lord of the earth wept aloud.
रुदित्वा तु चिरं कालं भ्रातरौ सुमहाद्युती ।
कृतशौचौ नरव्याघ्रौ प्रीतिमन्तौ बभूवतुः ॥१३॥
13. ruditvā tu ciraṁ kālaṁ bhrātarau sumahādyutī ,
kṛtaśaucau naravyāghrau prītimantau babhūvatuḥ.
13. ruditvā tu ciram kālam bhrātarau sumahādyutī
kṛtaśaucau naravyāghrau prītimantau babhūvatuḥ
13. bhrātarau sumahādyutī naravyāghrau ciram kālam
ruditvā tu kṛtaśaucau prītimantau babhūvatuḥ
13. After weeping for a long time, the two extremely glorious brothers, these tigers among men, having performed the purification rites, became filled with affection.
तत आश्लिष्य स प्रेम्णा मूर्ध्नि चाघ्राय पाण्डवम् ।
प्रीत्या परमया युक्तः प्रस्मयंश्चाब्रवीज्जयम् ॥१४॥
14. tata āśliṣya sa premṇā mūrdhni cāghrāya pāṇḍavam ,
prītyā paramayā yuktaḥ prasmayaṁścābravījjayam.
14. tataḥ āśliṣya sa premṇā mūrdhni ca āghrāya pāṇḍavam
prītyā paramayā yuktaḥ prasmayan ca abravīt jayam
14. tataḥ sa premṇā pāṇḍavam āśliṣya ca mūrdhni āghrāya,
paramayā prītyā yuktaḥ prasmayan ca,
jayam abravīt
14. Then he, with love, embraced the Pāṇḍava and kissed him on the head. Full of supreme affection and smiling, he spoke to Jaya.
कर्णेन मे महाबाहो सर्वसैन्यस्य पश्यतः ।
कवचं च ध्वजश्चैव धनुः शक्तिर्हया गदा ।
शरैः कृत्ता महेष्वास यतमानस्य संयुगे ॥१५॥
15. karṇena me mahābāho sarvasainyasya paśyataḥ ,
kavacaṁ ca dhvajaścaiva dhanuḥ śaktirhayā gadā ,
śaraiḥ kṛttā maheṣvāsa yatamānasya saṁyuge.
15. karṇena me mahābāho sarvasainyasya
paśyataḥ kavacam ca dhvajaḥ ca eva
dhanuḥ śaktiḥ hayāḥ gadā śaraiḥ
kṛttā maheṣvāsa yatamanasya saṃyuge
15. mahābāho maheṣvāsa! me sarvasainyasya paśyataḥ,
saṃyuge yatamanasya,
karṇena śaraiḥ kavacam ca dhvajaḥ ca eva,
dhanuḥ,
śaktiḥ,
hayāḥ,
gadā kṛttā.
15. O mighty-armed one (mahābāho), by Karṇa, before the eyes of my entire army, my armor, banner, bow, spear, horses, and mace were cut by arrows, even as I was striving in battle, O great archer (maheṣvāsa).
सोऽहं ज्ञात्वा रणे तस्य कर्म दृष्ट्वा च फल्गुन ।
व्यवसीदामि दुःखेन न च मे जीवितं प्रियम् ॥१६॥
16. so'haṁ jñātvā raṇe tasya karma dṛṣṭvā ca phalguna ,
vyavasīdāmi duḥkhena na ca me jīvitaṁ priyam.
16. saḥ aham jñātvā raṇe tasya karma dṛṣṭvā ca phalguna
vyavasīdāmi duḥkhena na ca me jīvitam priyam
16. phalguna! saḥ aham raṇe tasya karma jñātvā ca dṛṣṭvā (ca),
duḥkhena vyavasīdāmi,
ca me jīvitam priyam na (asti).
16. Having known and seen his action (karma) in battle, O Phalguna, I am overcome with sorrow, and my life is no longer dear to me.
तमद्य यदि वै वीर न हनिष्यसि सूतजम् ।
प्राणानेव परित्यक्ष्ये जीवितार्थो हि को मम ॥१७॥
17. tamadya yadi vai vīra na haniṣyasi sūtajam ,
prāṇāneva parityakṣye jīvitārtho hi ko mama.
17. tam adya yadi vai vīra na haniṣyasi sūtajam
prāṇān eva parityakṣye jīvitārthaḥ hi kaḥ mama
17. vīra yadi adya tam sūtajam na haniṣyasi vai
mama prāṇān eva parityakṣye hi kaḥ jīvitārthaḥ
17. O hero, if you do not kill that son of Sūta today, I will surely abandon my life. For what purpose would my life then serve?
एवमुक्तः प्रत्युवाच विजयो भरतर्षभ ।
सत्येन ते शपे राजन्प्रसादेन तवैव च ।
भीमेन च नरश्रेष्ठ यमाभ्यां च महीपते ॥१८॥
18. evamuktaḥ pratyuvāca vijayo bharatarṣabha ,
satyena te śape rājanprasādena tavaiva ca ,
bhīmena ca naraśreṣṭha yamābhyāṁ ca mahīpate.
18. evam uktaḥ pratyuvāca vijayaḥ
bharatarṣabha satyena te śape rājan
prasādena tava eva ca bhīmena ca
naraśreṣṭha yamābhyām ca mahīpate
18. bharatarṣabha evaṁ uktaḥ vijayaḥ

te satyena tava prasādena eva
ca bhīmena ca yamābhyām ca śape
18. Addressed thus, Arjuna (Vijaya), O best of Bharatas, replied: 'O King, I swear to you by truth, and by your grace, and by Bhīma, O best among men, and by the two Yamas, O lord of the earth.'
यथाद्य समरे कर्णं हनिष्यामि हतोऽथ वा ।
महीतले पतिष्यामि सत्येनायुधमालभे ॥१९॥
19. yathādya samare karṇaṁ haniṣyāmi hato'tha vā ,
mahītale patiṣyāmi satyenāyudhamālabhe.
19. yathā adya samare karṇam haniṣyāmi hataḥ atha
vā mahītale patiṣyāmi satyena āyudham ālabhe
19. yathā adya samare karṇam haniṣyāmi atha vā
hataḥ mahītale patiṣyāmi satyena āyudham ālabhe
19. Today in battle, I shall either slay Karṇa, or I shall fall dead upon the earth. I take up my weapon by this oath of truth.
एवमाभाष्य राजानमब्रवीन्माधवं वचः ।
अद्य कर्णं रणे कृष्ण सूदयिष्ये न संशयः ।
तदनुध्याहि भद्रं ते वधं तस्य दुरात्मनः ॥२०॥
20. evamābhāṣya rājānamabravīnmādhavaṁ vacaḥ ,
adya karṇaṁ raṇe kṛṣṇa sūdayiṣye na saṁśayaḥ ,
tadanudhyāhi bhadraṁ te vadhaṁ tasya durātmanaḥ.
20. evam ābhāṣya rājānam abravīt mādhavam
vacaḥ adya karṇam raṇe kṛṣṇa
sūdayiṣye na saṃśayaḥ tat anudhyāhi
bhadram te vadham tasya durātmanaḥ
20. evam rājānam ābhāṣya mādhavam vacaḥ
abravīt kṛṣṇa adya raṇe karṇam
sūdayiṣye na saṃśayaḥ tat tasya
durātmanaḥ vadham anudhyāhi te bhadram
20. Having thus addressed the king, he spoke these words to Kṛṣṇa (Mādhava): 'Today, O Kṛṣṇa, I shall certainly slay Karṇa in battle; there is no doubt about it. Therefore, contemplate this - may good fortune be yours - the slaying of that evil-souled (ātman) one.'
एवमुक्तोऽब्रवीत्पार्थं केशवो राजसत्तम ।
शक्तोऽस्मि भरतश्रेष्ठ यत्नं कर्तुं यथाबलम् ॥२१॥
21. evamukto'bravītpārthaṁ keśavo rājasattama ,
śakto'smi bharataśreṣṭha yatnaṁ kartuṁ yathābalam.
21. evaṃ uktaḥ abravīt pārthaṃ keśavaḥ rājasattama |
śaktaḥ asmi bharataśreṣṭha yatnaṃ kartuṃ yathābalam
21. rājasattama bharataśreṣṭha evaṃ uktaḥ keśavaḥ
pārthaṃ abravīt asmi śaktaḥ yathābalam yatnaṃ kartuṃ
21. Thus addressed, Keśava (Krishna), O foremost of kings, said to Pārtha (Arjuna): "O best among the Bhāratas, I am able to make an effort to the best of my ability."
एवं चापि हि मे कामो नित्यमेव महारथ ।
कथं भवान्रणे कर्णं निहन्यादिति मे मतिः ॥२२॥
22. evaṁ cāpi hi me kāmo nityameva mahāratha ,
kathaṁ bhavānraṇe karṇaṁ nihanyāditi me matiḥ.
22. evaṃ ca api hi me kāmaḥ nityam eva mahāratha |
kathaṃ bhavān raṇe karṇaṃ nihanyāt iti me matiḥ
22. mahāratha evaṃ ca api hi me kāmaḥ nityam eva
kathaṃ bhavān raṇe karṇaṃ nihanyāt iti me matiḥ
22. And indeed, O great warrior, my constant desire is this: 'How will you slay Karṇa in battle?' Such is my conviction.
भूयश्चोवाच मतिमान्माधवो धर्मनन्दनम् ।
युधिष्ठिरेमं बीभत्सुं त्वं सान्त्वयितुमर्हसि ।
अनुज्ञातुं च कर्णस्य वधायाद्य दुरात्मनः ॥२३॥
23. bhūyaścovāca matimānmādhavo dharmanandanam ,
yudhiṣṭhiremaṁ bībhatsuṁ tvaṁ sāntvayitumarhasi ,
anujñātuṁ ca karṇasya vadhāyādya durātmanaḥ.
23. bhūyaḥ ca uvāca matimān mādhavaḥ
dharmanandanam | yudhiṣṭhira imaṃ bībhatsuṃ
tvaṃ sāntvayitum arhasi | anujñātuṃ
ca karṇasya vadhāya adya durātmanaḥ
23. matimān mādhavaḥ bhūyaḥ ca dharmanandanam
uvāca yudhiṣṭhira tvaṃ imaṃ bībhatsuṃ
sāntvayitum arhasi ca adya durātmanaḥ
karṇasya vadhāya anujñātuṃ (arhasi)
23. Furthermore, the intelligent Mādhava (Krishna) said to the son of (dharma) (Yudhiṣṭhira): "O Yudhiṣṭhira, you should pacify this Bibhatsu (Arjuna). And you should grant permission today for the slaying of the wicked Karṇa."
श्रुत्वा ह्ययमहं चैव त्वां कर्णशरपीडितम् ।
प्रवृत्तिं ज्ञातुमायाताविह पाण्डवनन्दन ॥२४॥
24. śrutvā hyayamahaṁ caiva tvāṁ karṇaśarapīḍitam ,
pravṛttiṁ jñātumāyātāviha pāṇḍavanandana.
24. śrutvā hi ayam ahaṃ ca eva tvāṃ karṇaśarapīḍitam
| pravṛttiṃ jñātum āyātāu iha pāṇḍunandana
24. pāṇḍunandana hi eva ahaṃ ca ayam tvāṃ
karṇaśarapīḍitam śrutvā iha pravṛttiṃ jñātum āyātāu
24. For, O son of Pāṇḍu, having heard that you were afflicted by Karṇa's arrows, both I and this (Arjuna) have come here to ascertain the situation.
दिष्ट्यासि राजन्निरुजो दिष्ट्या न ग्रहणं गतः ।
परिसान्त्वय बीभत्सुं जयमाशाधि चानघ ॥२५॥
25. diṣṭyāsi rājannirujo diṣṭyā na grahaṇaṁ gataḥ ,
parisāntvaya bībhatsuṁ jayamāśādhi cānagha.
25. diṣṭyā asi rājan nirujaḥ diṣṭyā na grahaṇam gataḥ
parisāntvaya bībhatsum jayam āśādhi ca anagha
25. rājan anagha diṣṭyā asi nirujaḥ diṣṭyā na grahaṇam
gataḥ parisāntvaya bībhatsum ca āśādhi jayam
25. Fortunately, O King, you are uninjured, and fortunately, you were not captured. Console Bhībhatsu (Arjuna), O sinless one, and seek victory.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
एह्येहि पार्थ बीभत्सो मां परिष्वज पाण्डव ।
वक्तव्यमुक्तोऽस्म्यहितं त्वया क्षान्तं च तन्मया ॥२६॥
26. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
ehyehi pārtha bībhatso māṁ pariṣvaja pāṇḍava ,
vaktavyamukto'smyahitaṁ tvayā kṣāntaṁ ca tanmayā.
26. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca ehi ehi pārtha bībhatso mām pariṣvaja
pāṇḍava vaktavyam uktaḥ asmi ahitam tvayā kṣāntam ca tat mayā
26. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca pārtha bībhatso pāṇḍava ehi ehi mām
pariṣvaja ahitam vaktavyam uktaḥ asmi ca tat tvayā mayā kṣāntam
26. Yudhiṣṭhira said: 'Come, come, O Pārtha (Arjuna), O Bhībhatsu (Arjuna)! Embrace me, O Pāṇḍava (Arjuna)! I have spoken harmful words, which were intended to be said. And that has been forgiven by you, and by me too.'
अहं त्वामनुजानामि जहि कर्णं धनंजय ।
मन्युं च मा कृथाः पार्थ यन्मयोक्तोऽसि दारुणम् ॥२७॥
27. ahaṁ tvāmanujānāmi jahi karṇaṁ dhanaṁjaya ,
manyuṁ ca mā kṛthāḥ pārtha yanmayokto'si dāruṇam.

27. I permit you, O Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), to kill Karṇa. And do not harbor anger (manyu), O Pārtha (Arjuna), for the harsh words which you were spoken by me.
संजय उवाच ।
ततो धनंजयो राजञ्शिरसा प्रणतस्तदा ।
पादौ जग्राह पाणिभ्यां भ्रातुर्ज्येष्ठस्य मारिष ॥२८॥
28. saṁjaya uvāca ,
tato dhanaṁjayo rājañśirasā praṇatastadā ,
pādau jagrāha pāṇibhyāṁ bhrāturjyeṣṭhasya māriṣa.

28. Saṃjaya said: 'Then, O King (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) bowed with his head at that time and grasped the feet of his elder brother (Yudhiṣṭhira) with both hands, O respected one.'
समुत्थाप्य ततो राजा परिष्वज्य च पीडितम् ।
मूर्ध्न्युपाघ्राय चैवैनमिदं पुनरुवाच ह ॥२९॥
29. samutthāpya tato rājā pariṣvajya ca pīḍitam ,
mūrdhnyupāghrāya caivainamidaṁ punaruvāca ha.

29. Then the king, having raised him up, embraced the distressed one firmly, smelled his head, and again spoke these words to him.
धनंजय महाबाहो मानितोऽस्मि दृढं त्वया ।
माहात्म्यं विजयं चैव भूयः प्राप्नुहि शाश्वतम् ॥३०॥
30. dhanaṁjaya mahābāho mānito'smi dṛḍhaṁ tvayā ,
māhātmyaṁ vijayaṁ caiva bhūyaḥ prāpnuhi śāśvatam.

māhātmyam vijayam ca eva bhūyaḥ prāpnuhi śāśvatam

30. O Dhananjaya, O mighty-armed one, I have been greatly honored by you. May you again attain eternal greatness and victory.
अर्जुन उवाच ।
अद्य तं पापकर्माणं सानुबन्धं रणे शरैः ।
नयाम्यन्तं समासाद्य राधेयं बलगर्वितम् ॥३१॥
31. arjuna uvāca ,
adya taṁ pāpakarmāṇaṁ sānubandhaṁ raṇe śaraiḥ ,
nayāmyantaṁ samāsādya rādheyaṁ balagarvitam.

śaraiḥ nayāmi antam samāsādya rādheyam balagarvitam

31. Arjuna said: "Today, having reached that evil-doer, Radheya (Karna), who is proud of his strength, I will bring him and his followers to their end in battle with arrows."
येन त्वं पीडितो बाणैर्दृढमायम्य कार्मुकम् ।
तस्याद्य कर्मणः कर्णः फलं प्राप्स्यति दारुणम् ॥३२॥
32. yena tvaṁ pīḍito bāṇairdṛḍhamāyamya kārmukam ,
tasyādya karmaṇaḥ karṇaḥ phalaṁ prāpsyati dāruṇam.
32. yena tvam pīḍitaḥ bāṇaiḥ dṛḍham āyamya kārmukam
tasya adya karmaṇaḥ karṇaḥ phalam prāpsyati dāruṇam
32. yena dṛḍham kārmukam āyamya tvam bāṇaiḥ pīḍitaḥ
tasya karmaṇaḥ adya karṇaḥ dāruṇam phalam prāpsyati
32. For that deed by which you were tormented by arrows, having firmly drawn his bow, Karna will today obtain a terrible consequence.
अद्य त्वामहमेष्यामि कर्णं हत्वा महीपते ।
सभाजयितुमाक्रन्दादिति सत्यं ब्रवीमि ते ॥३३॥
33. adya tvāmahameṣyāmi karṇaṁ hatvā mahīpate ,
sabhājayitumākrandāditi satyaṁ bravīmi te.

sabhājayitum ākrandāt iti satyam bravīmi te

33. O king, today, having killed Karna, I will come to you to honor you, freeing you from lamentation. I tell you this truth.
नाहत्वा विनिवर्तेऽहं कर्णमद्य रणाजिरात् ।
इति सत्येन ते पादौ स्पृशामि जगतीपते ॥३४॥
34. nāhatvā vinivarte'haṁ karṇamadya raṇājirāt ,
iti satyena te pādau spṛśāmi jagatīpate.

34. O lord of the earth, I will not return from the battlefield today without having killed Karna. By this truth, I touch your feet.
संजय उवाच ।
प्रसाद्य धर्मराजानं प्रहृष्टेनान्तरात्मना ।
पार्थः प्रोवाच गोविन्दं सूतपुत्रवधोद्यतः ॥३५॥
35. saṁjaya uvāca ,
prasādya dharmarājānaṁ prahṛṣṭenāntarātmanā ,
pārthaḥ provāca govindaṁ sūtaputravadhodyataḥ.

35. Sanjaya said: Having appeased Dharmaraja (Yudhishthira) with a delighted inner self (ātman), Partha (Arjuna), intent on slaying the son of Sūta (Karna), spoke to Govinda (Krishna).
कल्प्यतां च रथो भूयो युज्यन्तां च हयोत्तमाः ।
आयुधानि च सर्वाणि सज्ज्यन्तां वै महारथे ॥३६॥
36. kalpyatāṁ ca ratho bhūyo yujyantāṁ ca hayottamāḥ ,
āyudhāni ca sarvāṇi sajjyantāṁ vai mahārathe.

uttamāḥ āyudhāni ca sarvāṇi sajjyantām vai mahārathe

36. Let the chariot be prepared again, and let the excellent horses be yoked. And indeed, let all weapons be made ready in the great chariot.
उपावृत्ताश्च तुरगाः शिक्षिताश्चाश्वसादिनः ।
रथोपकरणैः सर्वैरुपायान्तु त्वरान्विताः ॥३७॥
37. upāvṛttāśca turagāḥ śikṣitāścāśvasādinaḥ ,
rathopakaraṇaiḥ sarvairupāyāntu tvarānvitāḥ.

37. Let the horses be brought back, and the horsemen be instructed. They should all come swiftly, equipped with all the chariot's apparatus.
एवमुक्ते महाराज फल्गुनेन महात्मना ।
उवाच दारुकं कृष्णः कुरु सर्वं यथाब्रवीत् ।
अर्जुनो भरतश्रेष्ठः श्रेष्ठः सर्वधनुष्मताम् ॥३८॥
38. evamukte mahārāja phalgunena mahātmanā ,
uvāca dārukaṁ kṛṣṇaḥ kuru sarvaṁ yathābravīt ,
arjuno bharataśreṣṭhaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ sarvadhanuṣmatām.

38. O great king, when the magnanimous Arjuna (phalguena) had spoken thus, Kṛṣṇa said to Dāruka, 'Do everything as he has instructed. Arjuna, O best of the Bhāratas, is indeed the foremost of all wielders of bows.'
आज्ञप्तस्त्वथ कृष्णेन दारुको राजसत्तम ।
योजयामास स रथं वैयाघ्रं शत्रुतापनम् ॥३९॥
39. ājñaptastvatha kṛṣṇena dāruko rājasattama ,
yojayāmāsa sa rathaṁ vaiyāghraṁ śatrutāpanam.

39. Then, O best among kings, Dāruka, having been commanded by Kṛṣṇa, harnessed that tiger-skinned chariot, which was terrifying to foes.
युक्तं तु रथमास्थाय दारुकेण महात्मना ।
आपृच्छ्य धर्मराजानं ब्राह्मणान्स्वस्ति वाच्य च ।
समङ्गलस्वस्त्ययनमारुरोह रथोत्तमम् ॥४०॥
40. yuktaṁ tu rathamāsthāya dārukeṇa mahātmanā ,
āpṛcchya dharmarājānaṁ brāhmaṇānsvasti vācya ca ,
samaṅgalasvastyayanamāruroha rathottamam.

40. Indeed, having mounted the harnessed chariot with the magnanimous Dāruka, and having sought permission from King Yudhiṣṭhira (dharmarājan) and made the brāhmaṇas recite blessings, he (Arjuna) ascended that excellent chariot, which was accompanied by auspicious benedictions.
तस्य राजा महाप्राज्ञो धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
आशिषोऽयुङ्क्त परमा युक्ताः कर्णवधं प्रति ॥४१॥
41. tasya rājā mahāprājño dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
āśiṣo'yuṅkta paramā yuktāḥ karṇavadhaṁ prati.

41. The very wise King Yudhishthira, the king of righteousness (dharma), offered to him (Arjuna) supreme and appropriate blessings regarding the slaying of Karna.
तं प्रयान्तं महेष्वासं दृष्ट्वा भूतानि भारत ।
निहतं मेनिरे कर्णं पाण्डवेन महात्मना ॥४२॥
42. taṁ prayāntaṁ maheṣvāsaṁ dṛṣṭvā bhūtāni bhārata ,
nihataṁ menire karṇaṁ pāṇḍavena mahātmanā.

42. O Bharata, seeing him, the great archer, go forth, all beings considered Karna already slain by the great-souled Pandava (Arjuna).
बभूवुर्विमलाः सर्वा दिशो राजन्समन्ततः ।
चाषाश्च शतपत्राश्च क्रौञ्चाश्चैव जनेश्वर ।
प्रदक्षिणमकुर्वन्त तदा वै पाण्डुनन्दनम् ॥४३॥
43. babhūvurvimalāḥ sarvā diśo rājansamantataḥ ,
cāṣāśca śatapatrāśca krauñcāścaiva janeśvara ,
pradakṣiṇamakurvanta tadā vai pāṇḍunandanam.

43. O King, O Lord of men, all directions everywhere became clear and pure. Then, kingfishers, cuckoos, and cranes indeed circumambulated the son of Pandu (Arjuna) clockwise.
बहवः पक्षिणो राजन्पुंनामानः शुभाः शिवाः ।
त्वरयन्तोऽर्जुनं युद्धे हृष्टरूपा ववाशिरे ॥४४॥
44. bahavaḥ pakṣiṇo rājanpuṁnāmānaḥ śubhāḥ śivāḥ ,
tvarayanto'rjunaṁ yuddhe hṛṣṭarūpā vavāśire.

44. O King, many auspicious and benevolent male birds, with joyful forms, cried out, encouraging Arjuna in battle.
कङ्का गृध्रा वडाश्चैव वायसाश्च विशां पते ।
अग्रतस्तस्य गच्छन्ति भक्ष्यहेतोर्भयानकाः ॥४५॥
45. kaṅkā gṛdhrā vaḍāścaiva vāyasāśca viśāṁ pate ,
agratastasya gacchanti bhakṣyahetorbhayānakāḥ.

45. O lord of the people, terrifying herons, vultures, and crows went before him (Karna), seeking food.
निमित्तानि च धन्यानि पार्थस्य प्रशशंसिरे ।
विनाशमरिसैन्यानां कर्णस्य च वधं तथा ॥४६॥
46. nimittāni ca dhanyāni pārthasya praśaśaṁsire ,
vināśamarisainyānāṁ karṇasya ca vadhaṁ tathā.
46. nimittāni ca dhanyāni pārthasya praśasaṃsire
vināśam arisainyānām karṇasya ca vadham tathā

46. And auspicious omens portended good fortune for Pārtha (Arjuna), foretelling the destruction of the enemy armies and the death of Karṇa.
प्रयातस्याथ पार्थस्य महान्स्वेदो व्यजायत ।
चिन्ता च विपुला जज्ञे कथं न्वेतद्भविष्यति ॥४७॥
47. prayātasyātha pārthasya mahānsvedo vyajāyata ,
cintā ca vipulā jajñe kathaṁ nvetadbhaviṣyati.

47. Then, as Pārtha (Arjuna) set out, a great sweat broke out on him, and a profound anxiety arose, [thinking,] 'How indeed will this come to pass?'
ततो गाण्डीवधन्वानमब्रवीन्मधुसूदनः ।
दृष्ट्वा पार्थं तदायस्तं चिन्तापरिगतं तदा ॥४८॥
48. tato gāṇḍīvadhanvānamabravīnmadhusūdanaḥ ,
dṛṣṭvā pārthaṁ tadāyastaṁ cintāparigataṁ tadā.
48. tataḥ gāṇḍīvadhanvānam abravīt madhusūdanaḥ
dṛṣṭvā pārtham tadā āyastam cintāparigatam tadā
48. tataḥ madhusūdanaḥ,

48. Then Kṛṣṇa, the slayer of Madhu (Madhusūdana), spoke to the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow (Arjuna), having seen Pārtha troubled and overwhelmed by anxiety at that moment.
गाण्डीवधन्वन्संग्रामे ये त्वया धनुषा जिताः ।
न तेषां मानुषो जेता त्वदन्य इह विद्यते ॥४९॥
49. gāṇḍīvadhanvansaṁgrāme ye tvayā dhanuṣā jitāḥ ,
na teṣāṁ mānuṣo jetā tvadanya iha vidyate.
49. gāṇḍīvadhanvan saṃgrāme ye tvayā dhanuṣā jitāḥ
na teṣāṃ mānuṣaḥ jetā tvat anyaḥ iha vidyate

49. O wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow, there is no human conqueror in this world other than you who could have vanquished those whom you defeated with your bow in battle.
दृष्टा हि बहवः शूराः शक्रतुल्यपराक्रमाः ।
त्वां प्राप्य समरे वीरं ये गताः परमां गतिम् ॥५०॥
50. dṛṣṭā hi bahavaḥ śūrāḥ śakratulyaparākramāḥ ,
tvāṁ prāpya samare vīraṁ ye gatāḥ paramāṁ gatim.
50. dṛṣṭāḥ hi bahavaḥ śūrāḥ śakratulyaparākramāḥ
tvāṃ prāpya samare vīraṃ ye gatāḥ paramām gatim

50. Indeed, many brave warriors, whose prowess was equal to that of Indra, having encountered you, the hero, in battle, attained the supreme state.
को हि द्रोणं च भीष्मं च भगदत्तं च मारिष ।
विन्दानुविन्दावावन्त्यौ काम्बोजं च सुदक्षिणम् ॥५१॥
51. ko hi droṇaṁ ca bhīṣmaṁ ca bhagadattaṁ ca māriṣa ,
vindānuvindāvāvantyau kāmbojaṁ ca sudakṣiṇam.
51. kaḥ hi droṇaṃ ca bhīṣmaṃ ca bhagadattaṃ ca māriṣa
vindānuvindau āvantyau kāmbojaṃ ca sudakṣiṇam

51. O respected one, who indeed could face Droṇa, and Bhīṣma, and Bhagadatta, and the two princes of Avanti (Vinda and Anuvinda), and Sudakṣiṇa of Kāmboja...
श्रुतायुषं महावीर्यमच्युतायुषमेव च ।
प्रत्युद्गम्य भवेत्क्षेमी यो न स्यात्त्वमिव क्षमी ॥५२॥
52. śrutāyuṣaṁ mahāvīryamacyutāyuṣameva ca ,
pratyudgamya bhavetkṣemī yo na syāttvamiva kṣamī.

pratyudgamya bhavet kṣemī yaḥ na syāt tvam iva kṣamī

52. ...and Śrutāyuṣa of great valor, and Acyutāyuṣa? Who, indeed, having confronted them, would be safe, unless he were as capable as you?
तव ह्यस्त्राणि दिव्यानि लाघवं बलमेव च ।
वेधः पातश्च लक्षश्च योगश्चैव तवार्जुन ।
असंमोहश्च युद्धेषु विज्ञानस्य च संनतिः ॥५३॥
53. tava hyastrāṇi divyāni lāghavaṁ balameva ca ,
vedhaḥ pātaśca lakṣaśca yogaścaiva tavārjuna ,
asaṁmohaśca yuddheṣu vijñānasya ca saṁnatiḥ.

53. Indeed, Arjuna, you possess divine weapons, swiftness, and strength. Yours also are the ability to pierce, strike, and hit the target, as well as the skill of yogic (yoga) discipline. Furthermore, you demonstrate unfailing composure in battles and a profound humility born of wisdom.
भवान्देवासुरान्सर्वान्हन्यात्सहचराचरान् ।
पृथिव्यां हि रणे पार्थ न योद्धा त्वत्समः पुमान् ॥५४॥
54. bhavāndevāsurānsarvānhanyātsahacarācarān ,
pṛthivyāṁ hi raṇe pārtha na yoddhā tvatsamaḥ pumān.
54. bhavān devāsurān sarvān hanyāt saha-carācarān |
pṛthivyām hi raṇe pārtha na yodhā tvat-samaḥ pumān
54. pārtha bhavān hi sarvān devāsurān saha-carācarān
hanyāt pṛthivyām raṇe tvat-samaḥ pumān yodhā na (asti)
54. You, O son of Pṛthā, could indeed slay all gods and demons, along with all beings, moving and unmoving. Truly, on earth, there is no man, no warrior, equal to you in battle.
धनुर्ग्रहा हि ये केचित्क्षत्रिया युद्धदुर्मदाः ।
आ देवात्त्वत्समं तेषां न पश्यामि शृणोमि वा ॥५५॥
55. dhanurgrahā hi ye kecitkṣatriyā yuddhadurmadāḥ ,
ā devāttvatsamaṁ teṣāṁ na paśyāmi śṛṇomi vā.
55. dhanur-grahāḥ hi ye kecit kṣatriyāḥ yuddha-durmadāḥ
| ā devāt tvat-samam teṣām na paśyāmi śṛṇomi vā
55. hi ye kecit dhanurgrahāḥ yuddhadurmadāḥ kṣatriyāḥ (santi)
teṣām ā devāt tvatsamam (anyam) na paśyāmi vā na śṛṇomi
55. Indeed, among all those kshatriyas (kṣatriya) who wield bows and are arrogant in battle, even up to the gods, I neither see nor hear of anyone equal to you.
ब्रह्मणा च प्रजाः सृष्टा गाण्डीवं च महाद्भुतम् ।
येन त्वं युध्यसे पार्थ तस्मान्नास्ति त्वया समः ॥५६॥
56. brahmaṇā ca prajāḥ sṛṣṭā gāṇḍīvaṁ ca mahādbhutam ,
yena tvaṁ yudhyase pārtha tasmānnāsti tvayā samaḥ.
56. brahmaṇā ca prajāḥ sṛṣṭā gāṇḍīvam ca mahā-adbhutam |
yena tvam yudhyase pārtha tasmāt na asti tvayā samaḥ
56. pārtha brahmaṇā ca prajāḥ sṛṣṭā ca mahā-adbhutam gāṇḍīvam
(sṛṣṭam) yena tvam yudhyase tasmāt tvayā samaḥ na asti
56. Just as Brahmā created beings (prajā), so too was the exceedingly wondrous Gāṇḍīva bow created. Because you fight with it, O son of Pṛthā, there is no one equal to you.
अवश्यं तु मया वाच्यं यत्पथ्यं तव पाण्डव ।
मावमंस्था महाबाहो कर्णमाहवशोभिनम् ॥५७॥
57. avaśyaṁ tu mayā vācyaṁ yatpathyaṁ tava pāṇḍava ,
māvamaṁsthā mahābāho karṇamāhavaśobhinam.
57. avaśyam tu mayā vācyam yat pathyam tava pāṇḍava
mā avamamsthāḥ mahābāho karṇam āhavaśobhinam
57. pāṇḍava mahābāho tu mayā tava yat pathyam avaśyam
vācyam āhavaśobhinam karṇam mā avamamsthāḥ
57. Indeed, O Pāṇḍava, I must certainly tell you what is beneficial. O mighty-armed one, do not disrespect Karna, who shines brilliantly in battle.
कर्णो हि बलवान्धृष्टः कृतास्त्रश्च महारथः ।
कृती च चित्रयोधी च देशे काले च कोविदः ॥५८॥
58. karṇo hi balavāndhṛṣṭaḥ kṛtāstraśca mahārathaḥ ,
kṛtī ca citrayodhī ca deśe kāle ca kovidaḥ.

kṛtī ca citrayodhī ca deśe kāle ca kovidaḥ

58. Indeed, Karna is mighty, fearless, skilled in weaponry, and a great warrior. He is accomplished, a versatile fighter, and knowledgeable regarding proper place and time.
तेजसा वह्निसदृशो वायुवेगसमो जवे ।
अन्तकप्रतिमः क्रोधे सिंहसंहननो बली ॥५९॥
59. tejasā vahnisadṛśo vāyuvegasamo jave ,
antakapratimaḥ krodhe siṁhasaṁhanano balī.

antakapratimaḥ krodhe siṃhasaṃhananaḥ balī

59. In his splendor, he is like fire; in swiftness, he is equal to the speed of the wind. In anger, he is like Yama, the Destroyer, possessing the build of a lion and being mighty.
अयोरत्निर्महाबाहुर्व्यूढोरस्कः सुदुर्जयः ।
अतिमानी च शूरश्च प्रवीरः प्रियदर्शनः ॥६०॥
60. ayoratnirmahābāhurvyūḍhoraskaḥ sudurjayaḥ ,
atimānī ca śūraśca pravīraḥ priyadarśanaḥ.

atimānī ca śūraḥ ca pravīraḥ priyadarśanaḥ

60. He has forearms like iron, is mighty-armed, broad-chested, and very difficult to defeat. He is exceedingly proud, heroic, a great champion, and of pleasing appearance.
सर्वैर्योधगुणैर्युक्तो मित्राणामभयंकरः ।
सततं पाण्डवद्वेषी धार्तराष्ट्रहिते रतः ॥६१॥
61. sarvairyodhaguṇairyukto mitrāṇāmabhayaṁkaraḥ ,
satataṁ pāṇḍavadveṣī dhārtarāṣṭrahite rataḥ.
61. sarvaiḥ yodha-guṇaiḥ yuktaḥ mitrāṇām abhayam-karaḥ
satatam pāṇḍava-dveṣī dhārtarāṣṭra-hite rataḥ

61. He is endowed with all warrior qualities, a protector of his friends, constantly hostile to the Pāṇḍavas, and devoted to the welfare of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
सर्वैरवध्यो राधेयो देवैरपि सवासवैः ।
ऋते त्वामिति मे बुद्धिस्त्वमद्य जहि सूतजम् ॥६२॥
62. sarvairavadhyo rādheyo devairapi savāsavaiḥ ,
ṛte tvāmiti me buddhistvamadya jahi sūtajam.
62. sarvaiḥ avadhyaḥ rādheyaḥ devaiḥ api sa-vāsavaiḥ
ṛte tvām iti me buddhiḥ tvam adya jahi sūta-jam
62. rādheyaḥ sarvaiḥ sa-vāsavaiḥ devaiḥ api ṛte tvām
avadhyaḥ iti me buddhiḥ tvam adya sūta-jam jahi
62. The son of Rādhā (rādheya) is invulnerable to all, even to the gods along with Indra (vāsava), except for you - this is my conviction. Therefore, you must slay the son of the charioteer (sūta-ja) today.
देवैरपि हि संयत्तैर्बिभ्रद्भिर्मांसशोणितम् ।
अशक्यः समरे जेतुं सर्वैरपि युयुत्सुभिः ॥६३॥
63. devairapi hi saṁyattairbibhradbhirmāṁsaśoṇitam ,
aśakyaḥ samare jetuṁ sarvairapi yuyutsubhiḥ.
63. devaiḥ api hi saṃyattaiḥ bibhradbhiḥ māṃsa-śoṇitam
aśakyaḥ samare jetum sarvaiḥ api yuyutsubhiḥ
63. hi saṃyattaiḥ māṃsa-śoṇitam bibhradbhiḥ sarvaiḥ
devaiḥ api yuyutsubhiḥ api samare jetum aśakyaḥ
63. Indeed, even by the well-prepared gods, though they bear physical bodies (māṃsa-śoṇitam), he is impossible to conquer in battle, even by all those who wish to fight.
दुरात्मानं पापमतिं नृशंसं दुष्टप्रज्ञं पाण्डवेयेषु नित्यम् ।
हीनस्वार्थं पाण्डवेयैर्विरोधे हत्वा कर्णं धिष्ठितार्थो भवाद्य ॥६४॥
64. durātmānaṁ pāpamatiṁ nṛśaṁsaṁ; duṣṭaprajñaṁ pāṇḍaveyeṣu nityam ,
hīnasvārthaṁ pāṇḍaveyairvirodhe; hatvā karṇaṁ dhiṣṭhitārtho bhavādya.
64. dur-ātmānam pāpa-matim nṛ-śaṃsam
duṣṭa-prajñam pāṇḍaveyeṣu nityam
hīna-svārtham pāṇḍaveyaiḥ virodhe hatvā
karṇam dhiṣṭhita-arthaḥ bhava adya
64. adya dur-ātmānam pāpa-matim nṛ-śaṃsam duṣṭa-prajñam pāṇḍaveyeṣu nityam pāṇḍaveyaiḥ virodhe hīna-svārtham karṇam hatvā,
dhiṣṭhita-arthaḥ bhava
64. Today, having slain Karṇa - who is wicked-souled, evil-minded, cruel, constantly ill-disposed towards the Pāṇḍavas, and whose own welfare is diminished by his enmity with the Pāṇḍavas - become one who has accomplished his purpose.
वीरं मन्यत आत्मानं येन पापः सुयोधनः ।
तमद्य मूलं पापानां जय सौतिं धनंजय ॥६५॥
65. vīraṁ manyata ātmānaṁ yena pāpaḥ suyodhanaḥ ,
tamadya mūlaṁ pāpānāṁ jaya sautiṁ dhanaṁjaya.
65. vīram manyate ātmānam yena pāpaḥ suyodhanaḥ
tam adya mūlam pāpānām jaya sautim dhanañjaya
65. he dhanañjaya! yena pāpaḥ suyodhanaḥ ātmānam vīram manyate tam pāpānām mūlam sautim adya jaya.
65. The wicked Duryodhana considers himself a hero (ātman) because of whom. Today, O Arjuna, conquer that son of Suta (Karṇa), who is the root of all evils.
