Saṃjaya said: Then Vāsudeva, while in the chariot, spoke: 'O son of Rādhā, it is fortunate that you remember righteous conduct (dharma) here. Usually, ignoble people, when submerged in calamities, blame fate and not their own misdeeds.'

O Karṇa, when you, along with Suyodhana, Duḥśāsana, and Śakuni, son of Subala, had brought Draupadī, clad in a single garment, into the assembly, why did righteous conduct (dharma) not occur to you then?

When Vāsudeva (Krishna) had thus spoken to the son of Rādhā (Karṇa), intense anger seized Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) as he remembered those specific incidents.

Upon seeing Arjuna (dhanañjayam), Karṇa then assailed him with the Brahmāstra. He then made another attempt at creating a chariot. However, the Pāṇḍava, repelling that weapon with his own, struck Karṇa.

Then Arjuna (kaunteya), son of Kunti, discharged another weapon, one dear to the fire-god (jātavedas), aiming it at Karṇa. That weapon blazed intensely.

Then Karṇa extinguished that fiery weapon with the Vāruṇa weapon. And with clouds, he made all directions dark and gloomy.

Then, the great-souled, crowned Arjuna (kirīṭī), exerting himself, felled that glorious and blazing banner of the great charioteer (mahāratha), Karna (adhirathi), with a sharp, gold-shafted razor-arrow.

O venerable one (māriṣa), Karna's fame, his adherence to natural law (dharma), his victory, and all his cherished things were linked to that banner (ketu). At that moment, the hearts of the Kurus sank, and a great cry of 'Alas! Alas!' arose.
