बृहदश्व उवाच ।
अथ दीर्घस्य कालस्य पर्णादो नाम वै द्विजः ।
प्रत्येत्य नगरं भैमीमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. bṛhadaśva uvāca ,
atha dīrghasya kālasya parṇādo nāma vai dvijaḥ ,
pratyetya nagaraṁ bhaimīmidaṁ vacanamabravīt.

1. Bṛhadaśva said: Now, after a long time, a Brahmin (dvija) named Parṇāda returned to the city and spoke these words to Bhīmī (Damayantī).
नैषधं मृगयानेन दमयन्ति दिवानिशम् ।
अयोध्यां नगरीं गत्वा भाङ्गस्वरिरुपस्थितः ॥२॥
2. naiṣadhaṁ mṛgayānena damayanti divāniśam ,
ayodhyāṁ nagarīṁ gatvā bhāṅgasvarirupasthitaḥ.
2. naiṣadham mṛgayānena damayanti divāniśam
ayodhyām nagarīm gatvā bhāṅgasvariḥ upasthitaḥ
2. O Damayantī, (I saw) the king of Niṣadha (Nala) engaged in hunting day and night. He, Bhāṅgasvari, has gone to the city of Ayodhyā and is present there.
श्रावितश्च मया वाक्यं त्वदीयं स महाजने ।
ऋतुपर्णो महाभागो यथोक्तं वरवर्णिनि ॥३॥
3. śrāvitaśca mayā vākyaṁ tvadīyaṁ sa mahājane ,
ṛtuparṇo mahābhāgo yathoktaṁ varavarṇini.
3. śrāvitaḥ ca mayā vākyaṃ tvadīyam saḥ mahājane
ṛtuparṇaḥ mahābhāgaḥ yathoktam varavarṇini
3. O fair-hipped one, your message was proclaimed by me among the great assembly, and the illustrious Rituparṇa (heard it) exactly as it was spoken.
तच्छ्रुत्वा नाब्रवीत्किंचिदृतुपर्णो नराधिपः ।
न च पारिषदः कश्चिद्भाष्यमाणो मयासकृत् ॥४॥
4. tacchrutvā nābravītkiṁcidṛtuparṇo narādhipaḥ ,
na ca pāriṣadaḥ kaścidbhāṣyamāṇo mayāsakṛt.
4. tat śrutvā na abravīt kiṃcit ṛtuparṇaḥ narādhipaḥ
na ca pāriṣadaḥ kaścit bhāṣyamāṇaḥ mayā asakṛt
4. Having heard that, King Rituparṇa did not say anything. Nor did any member of the assembly, though I addressed them repeatedly.
अनुज्ञातं तु मां राज्ञा विजने कश्चिदब्रवीत् ।
ऋतुपर्णस्य पुरुषो बाहुको नाम नामतः ॥५॥
5. anujñātaṁ tu māṁ rājñā vijane kaścidabravīt ,
ṛtuparṇasya puruṣo bāhuko nāma nāmataḥ.
5. anujñātam tu mām rājñā vijane kaścit abravīt
ṛtuparṇasya puruṣaḥ bāhukaḥ nāma nāmataḥ
5. However, after I had been granted permission by the king, a man named Bāhuka, a servant of Ṛtuparṇa, spoke to me privately.
सूतस्तस्य नरेन्द्रस्य विरूपो ह्रस्वबाहुकः ।
शीघ्रयाने सुकुशलो मृष्टकर्ता च भोजने ॥६॥
6. sūtastasya narendrasya virūpo hrasvabāhukaḥ ,
śīghrayāne sukuśalo mṛṣṭakartā ca bhojane.
6. sūtaḥ tasya narendrasya virūpaḥ hrasvabāhukaḥ
śīghrayāne sukuśalaḥ mṛṣṭakartā ca bhojane
6. He was that king's charioteer, deformed and short-armed. He was very skilled in fast driving and also an excellent preparer of food.
स विनिःश्वस्य बहुशो रुदित्वा च मुहुर्मुहुः ।
कुशलं चैव मां पृष्ट्वा पश्चादिदमभाषत ॥७॥
7. sa viniḥśvasya bahuśo ruditvā ca muhurmuhuḥ ,
kuśalaṁ caiva māṁ pṛṣṭvā paścādidamabhāṣata.
7. sa viniḥśvasya bahuśaḥ ruditvā ca muhurmuhuḥ
kuśalam ca eva mām pṛṣṭvā paścāt idam abhāṣata
7. He sighed deeply many times and wept repeatedly. Then, after asking me about my well-being, he spoke the following words.
वैषम्यमपि संप्राप्ता गोपायन्ति कुलस्त्रियः ।
आत्मानमात्मना सत्यो जितस्वर्गा न संशयः ।
रहिता भर्तृभिश्चैव न क्रुध्यन्ति कदाचन ॥८॥
8. vaiṣamyamapi saṁprāptā gopāyanti kulastriyaḥ ,
ātmānamātmanā satyo jitasvargā na saṁśayaḥ ,
rahitā bhartṛbhiścaiva na krudhyanti kadācana.
8. vaiṣamyam api saṃprāptāḥ gopāyanti
kulastriyaḥ ātmānam ātmanā satyāḥ
jitasvargāḥ na saṃśayaḥ rahitāḥ
bhartṛbhiḥ ca eva na krudhyanti kadācana
8. Even when they encounter distress, women of noble families protect themselves by their own (ātman) inherent nature. They are truthful and undoubtedly have conquered heaven. Moreover, even when separated from their husbands, they never become angry.
विषमस्थेन मूढेन परिभ्रष्टसुखेन च ।
यत्सा तेन परित्यक्ता तत्र न क्रोद्धुमर्हति ॥९॥
9. viṣamasthena mūḍhena paribhraṣṭasukhena ca ,
yatsā tena parityaktā tatra na kroddhumarhati.
9. viṣamasth-ena mūḍh-ena paribhraṣṭasukhena ca
yat sā tena parityaktā tatra na kroddhum arhati
9. She should not be angry in that situation, since she was abandoned by him who was in a perilous state, deluded, and deprived of happiness.
प्राणयात्रां परिप्रेप्सोः शकुनैर्हृतवाससः ।
आधिभिर्दह्यमानस्य श्यामा न क्रोद्धुमर्हति ॥१०॥
10. prāṇayātrāṁ pariprepsoḥ śakunairhṛtavāsasaḥ ,
ādhibhirdahyamānasya śyāmā na kroddhumarhati.
10. prāṇayātrām pariprepsoḥ śakunaiḥ hṛtavāsasaḥ
ādhibhiḥ dahyamānasya śyāmā na kroddhum arhati
10. Draupadi should not be angry with him, who was trying to maintain his life, whose clothes had been stolen by birds, and who was being tormented by mental distresses.
सत्कृतासत्कृता वापि पतिं दृष्ट्वा तथागतम् ।
भ्रष्टराज्यं श्रिया हीनं श्यामा न क्रोद्धुमर्हति ॥११॥
11. satkṛtāsatkṛtā vāpi patiṁ dṛṣṭvā tathāgatam ,
bhraṣṭarājyaṁ śriyā hīnaṁ śyāmā na kroddhumarhati.
11. satkṛtāsatkṛtā vā api patim dṛṣṭvā tathāgatam
bhraṣṭarājyam śriyā hīnam śyāmā na kroddhum arhati
11. Whether she was treated with respect or disrespect, Draupadi should not be angry after seeing her husband in such a condition—one whose kingdom was lost and who was devoid of prosperity.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा त्वरितोऽहमिहागतः ।
श्रुत्वा प्रमाणं भवती राज्ञश्चैव निवेदय ॥१२॥
12. tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā tvarito'hamihāgataḥ ,
śrutvā pramāṇaṁ bhavatī rājñaścaiva nivedaya.
12. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā tvaritaḥ aham iha āgataḥ
śrutvā pramāṇam bhavatī rājñaḥ ca eva nivedaya
12. Having heard his words, I quickly came here. Once you have heard (my account), you, madam, will be the authority; therefore, please report (this) to the king.
एतच्छ्रुत्वाश्रुपूर्णाक्षी पर्णादस्य विशां पते ।
दमयन्ती रहोऽभ्येत्य मातरं प्रत्यभाषत ॥१३॥
13. etacchrutvāśrupūrṇākṣī parṇādasya viśāṁ pate ,
damayantī raho'bhyetya mātaraṁ pratyabhāṣata.
13. etat śrutvā aśrupūrṇākṣī parṇādasya viśām pate
damayantī rahas abhyetya mātaram prati abhāṣata
13. O lord of the people (King Bhima), having heard this from Parnada, Damayanti, with eyes full of tears, approached her mother in private and spoke to her.
अयमर्थो न संवेद्यो भीमे मातः कथंचन ।
त्वत्संनिधौ समादेक्ष्ये सुदेवं द्विजसत्तमम् ॥१४॥
14. ayamartho na saṁvedyo bhīme mātaḥ kathaṁcana ,
tvatsaṁnidhau samādekṣye sudevaṁ dvijasattamam.
14. ayam arthaḥ na saṃvedyaḥ bhīme mātaḥ kathaṃcana
tvat saṃnidhau samādekṣye sudevam dvijasattamam
14. “O mother, this matter must by no means be made known to Bhima. In your presence, I will instruct Sudeva, the best among the Brahmins (dvija), for this task.”
यथा न नृपतिर्भीमः प्रतिपद्येत मे मतम् ।
तथा त्वया प्रयत्तव्यं मम चेत्प्रियमिच्छसि ॥१५॥
15. yathā na nṛpatirbhīmaḥ pratipadyeta me matam ,
tathā tvayā prayattavyaṁ mama cetpriyamicchasi.
15. yathā na nṛpatiḥ bhīmaḥ pratipadyeta me matam
tathā tvayā prayattavyam mama cet priyam icchasi
15. “If you desire my welfare, you must endeavor in such a way that King Bhima does not come to know my intention.”
यथा चाहं समानीता सुदेवेनाशु बान्धवान् ।
तेनैव मङ्गलेनाशु सुदेवो यातु माचिरम् ।
समानेतुं नलं मातरयोध्यां नगरीमितः ॥१६॥
16. yathā cāhaṁ samānītā sudevenāśu bāndhavān ,
tenaiva maṅgalenāśu sudevo yātu māciram ,
samānetuṁ nalaṁ mātarayodhyāṁ nagarīmitaḥ.
16. yathā ca aham samānītā sudevena āśu
bāndhavān tena eva maṅgalena āśu
sudevaḥ yātu mā ciram samānetum
nalam mātaram ayodhyām nagarīm itaḥ
16. “And just as I was quickly brought to my relatives by Sudeva, so let Sudeva, by that very auspicious means, go quickly and without delay, to bring Nala from this city of Ayodhya to my mother.”
विश्रान्तं च ततः पश्चात्पर्णादं द्विजसत्तमम् ।
अर्चयामास वैदर्भी धनेनातीव भामिनी ॥१७॥
17. viśrāntaṁ ca tataḥ paścātparṇādaṁ dvijasattamam ,
arcayāmāsa vaidarbhī dhanenātīva bhāminī.
17. viśrāntam ca tataḥ paścāt parṇādam dvijasattamam
arcayāmāsa vaidarbhī dhanena atīva bhāminī
17. And thereafter, the beautiful Vaidarbhī (Damayantī) exceedingly honored with wealth the ascetic Parṇāda, the best among the brahmins (dvijasattama), after he had rested.
नले चेहागते विप्र भूयो दास्यामि ते वसु ।
त्वया हि मे बहु कृतं यथा नान्यः करिष्यति ।
यद्भर्त्राहं समेष्यामि शीघ्रमेव द्विजोत्तम ॥१८॥
18. nale cehāgate vipra bhūyo dāsyāmi te vasu ,
tvayā hi me bahu kṛtaṁ yathā nānyaḥ kariṣyati ,
yadbhartrāhaṁ sameṣyāmi śīghrameva dvijottama.
18. nale ca iha āgate vipra bhūyaḥ dāsyāmi
te vasu tvayā hi me bahu kṛtam
yathā na anyaḥ kariṣyati yat bhartrā
aham sameṣyāmi śīghram eva dvijottama
18. “O Brahmin! When Nala returns here, I will give you more wealth. Indeed, you have done so much for me that no one else could do, because through your efforts I shall soon be reunited with my husband, O best among the brahmins (dvijottama)!”
एवमुक्तोऽर्चयित्वा तामाशीर्वादैः सुमङ्गलैः ।
गृहानुपययौ चापि कृतार्थः स महामनाः ॥१९॥
19. evamukto'rcayitvā tāmāśīrvādaiḥ sumaṅgalaiḥ ,
gṛhānupayayau cāpi kṛtārthaḥ sa mahāmanāḥ.
19. evam uktaḥ arcayitvā tām āśīrvādaiḥ sumangalair
gṛhān upayayau ca api kṛtārthaḥ saḥ mahāmanāḥ
19. Having been addressed thus, and after he (Parṇāda) honored her with very auspicious blessings, that noble-minded (mahāmanas) man, having achieved his purpose (kṛtārtha), then returned to his home.
ततश्चानाय्य तं विप्रं दमयन्ती युधिष्ठिर ।
अब्रवीत्संनिधौ मातुर्दुःखशोकसमन्विता ॥२०॥
20. tataścānāyya taṁ vipraṁ damayantī yudhiṣṭhira ,
abravītsaṁnidhau māturduḥkhaśokasamanvitā.
20. tataḥ ca ānāyya tam vipram damayantī yudhiṣṭhira
abravīt saṃnidhau mātuḥ duḥkhaśokasamantavitā
20. And then, O Yudhiṣṭhira, Damayantī, overwhelmed with sorrow (duḥkha) and grief (śoka), summoned that Brahmin (Parṇāda) and spoke in the presence of her mother.
गत्वा सुदेव नगरीमयोध्यावासिनं नृपम् ।
ऋतुपर्णं वचो ब्रूहि पतिमन्यं चिकीर्षती ।
आस्थास्यति पुनर्भैमी दमयन्ती स्वयंवरम् ॥२१॥
21. gatvā sudeva nagarīmayodhyāvāsinaṁ nṛpam ,
ṛtuparṇaṁ vaco brūhi patimanyaṁ cikīrṣatī ,
āsthāsyati punarbhaimī damayantī svayaṁvaram.
21. gatvā sudeva nagarīm ayodhyāvāsinam
nṛpam ṛtuparṇam vacaḥ brūhi
patim anyam cikīrṣatī āsthāsyati
punaḥ bhaimī damayantī svayaṃvaram
21. Sudeva, go to King Rituparna, who resides in the city of Ayodhya, and deliver this message: Damayantī, Bhīmī, desiring another husband, will again hold a self-choice ceremony (svayaṃvara).
तत्र गच्छन्ति राजानो राजपुत्राश्च सर्वशः ।
यथा च गणितः कालः श्वोभूते स भविष्यति ॥२२॥
22. tatra gacchanti rājāno rājaputrāśca sarvaśaḥ ,
yathā ca gaṇitaḥ kālaḥ śvobhūte sa bhaviṣyati.
22. tatra gacchanti rājānaḥ rājaputrāḥ ca sarvaśaḥ
yathā ca gaṇitaḥ kālaḥ śvobhūte saḥ bhaviṣyati
22. Kings and princes from everywhere will go there. The appointed time for it will be tomorrow.
यदि संभावनीयं ते गच्छ शीघ्रमरिंदम ।
सूर्योदये द्वितीयं सा भर्तारं वरयिष्यति ।
न हि स ज्ञायते वीरो नलो जीवन्मृतोऽपि वा ॥२३॥
23. yadi saṁbhāvanīyaṁ te gaccha śīghramariṁdama ,
sūryodaye dvitīyaṁ sā bhartāraṁ varayiṣyati ,
na hi sa jñāyate vīro nalo jīvanmṛto'pi vā.
23. yadi saṃbhāvanīyam te gaccha śīghram
ariṃdama sūryodaye dvitīyam sā
bhartāram varayiṣyati na hi saḥ
jñāyate vīraḥ nalaḥ jīvanmṛtaḥ api vā
23. O suppressor of enemies, if this is believable to you, then go quickly. At sunrise, she will choose a second husband. Indeed, it is not known whether that hero Nala is alive or even dead.
एवं तया यथोक्तं वै गत्वा राजानमब्रवीत् ।
ऋतुपर्णं महाराज सुदेवो ब्राह्मणस्तदा ॥२४॥
24. evaṁ tayā yathoktaṁ vai gatvā rājānamabravīt ,
ṛtuparṇaṁ mahārāja sudevo brāhmaṇastadā.
24. evam tayā yathoktam vai gatvā rājānam abravīt
ṛtuparṇam mahārāja sudevaḥ brāhmaṇaḥ tadā
24. Having thus gone, the Brahmin Sudeva then spoke to King Rituparna, just as she had instructed: 'O Great King...'
