वैशंपायन उवाच ।
स राजा सुमहातेजा वृद्धः कुरुकुलोद्वहः ।
नापश्यत तदा किंचिदप्रियं पाण्डुनन्दने ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
sa rājā sumahātejā vṛddhaḥ kurukulodvahaḥ ,
nāpaśyata tadā kiṁcidapriyaṁ pāṇḍunandane.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: That aged king, Dhritarashtra, who was exceedingly glorious and the upholder of the Kuru lineage, saw nothing unpleasant in the sons of Pāṇḍu at that time.
वर्तमानेषु सद्वृत्तिं पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु ।
प्रीतिमानभवद्राजा धृतराष्ट्रोऽम्बिकासुतः ॥२॥
2. vartamāneṣu sadvṛttiṁ pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu ,
prītimānabhavadrājā dhṛtarāṣṭro'mbikāsutaḥ.
2. vartamāneṣu sadvṛttim pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu
prītimān abhavat rājā dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ ambikāsutaḥ
2. King Dhritarashtra, the son of Ambikā, became delighted when the noble Pāṇḍavas consistently demonstrated virtuous conduct.
सौबलेयी च गान्धारी पुत्रशोकमपास्य तम् ।
सदैव प्रीतिमत्यासीत्तनयेषु निजेष्विव ॥३॥
3. saubaleyī ca gāndhārī putraśokamapāsya tam ,
sadaiva prītimatyāsīttanayeṣu nijeṣviva.
3. saubaleyī ca gāndhārī putraśokam apāsya tam
sadā eva prītimatī āsīt tanayeṣu nijeṣu iva
3. And Gāndhārī, the daughter of Subala, having cast aside her grief for those sons, was always delighted with them, treating them as her own children.
प्रियाण्येव तु कौरव्यो नाप्रियाणि कुरूद्वह ।
वैचित्रवीर्ये नृपतौ समाचरति नित्यदा ॥४॥
4. priyāṇyeva tu kauravyo nāpriyāṇi kurūdvaha ,
vaicitravīrye nṛpatau samācarati nityadā.
4. priyāṇi eva tu kauravyaḥ na apriyāṇi kurūdvaha
vaicitravīrye nṛpatau samācarati nityadā

4. O descendant of Kuru, O leader of the Kurus, he always behaved towards King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the son of Vicitravīrya, with agreeable actions alone, and never with disagreeable ones.
यद्यद्ब्रूते च किंचित्स धृतराष्ट्रो नराधिपः ।
गुरु वा लघु वा कार्यं गान्धारी च यशस्विनी ॥५॥
5. yadyadbrūte ca kiṁcitsa dhṛtarāṣṭro narādhipaḥ ,
guru vā laghu vā kāryaṁ gāndhārī ca yaśasvinī.
5. yat yat brūte ca kiñcit saḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ narādhipaḥ
guru vā laghu vā kāryam gāndhārī ca yaśasvinī
5. ca yat yat kiñcit saḥ narādhipaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ guru
vā laghu vā kāryam brūte ca yaśasvinī gāndhārī
5. And whatever King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the lord of men, said, be it an important or a trivial matter, and whatever the glorious Gandhari (said) as well.
तत्स राजा महाराज पाण्डवानां धुरंधरः ।
पूजयित्वा वचस्तत्तदकार्षीत्परवीरहा ॥६॥
6. tatsa rājā mahārāja pāṇḍavānāṁ dhuraṁdharaḥ ,
pūjayitvā vacastattadakārṣītparavīrahā.
6. tat saḥ rājā mahārāja pāṇḍavānām dhurandharaḥ
pūjayitvā vacaḥ tat tat akārṣīt paravīrahā
6. mahārāja tat saḥ rājā pāṇḍavānām dhurandharaḥ
paravīrahā vacaḥ tat tat pūjayitvā akārṣīt
6. O great king, that king (Yudhishthira), the leader of the Pāṇḍavas and slayer of hostile heroes, reverently accepted those very words and carried them out.
तेन तस्याभवत्प्रीतो वृत्तेन स नराधिपः ।
अन्वतप्यच्च संस्मृत्य पुत्रं मन्दमचेतसम् ॥७॥
7. tena tasyābhavatprīto vṛttena sa narādhipaḥ ,
anvatapyacca saṁsmṛtya putraṁ mandamacetasam.
7. tena tasya abhavat prītaḥ vṛttena saḥ narādhipaḥ
anvatapyat ca saṁsmṛtya putram mandam acetasam
7. tena vṛttena tasya saḥ narādhipaḥ prītaḥ abhavat
ca mandam acetasam putram saṁsmṛtya anvatapyat
7. By that conduct, pleasure came to that King Dhṛtarāṣṭra; and recalling his foolish and senseless son, he repented.
सदा च प्रातरुत्थाय कृतजप्यः शुचिर्नृपः ।
आशास्ते पाण्डुपुत्राणां समरेष्वपराजयम् ॥८॥
8. sadā ca prātarutthāya kṛtajapyaḥ śucirnṛpaḥ ,
āśāste pāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ samareṣvaparājayam.
8. sadā ca prātaḥ utthāya kṛtajapyaḥ śuciḥ nṛpaḥ
āśāste pāṇḍuputrāṇām samareṣu aparājayam
8. ca nṛpaḥ śuciḥ kṛtajapyaḥ sadā prātaḥ utthāya
pāṇḍuputrāṇām samareṣu aparājayam āśāste
8. And always, rising in the morning, the pure king, after completing his prescribed recitations, wished for the victory of the sons of Pāṇḍu in battles.
ब्राह्मणान्वाचयित्वा च हुत्वा चैव हुताशनम् ।
आयुष्यं पाण्डुपुत्राणामाशास्ते स नराधिपः ॥९॥
9. brāhmaṇānvācayitvā ca hutvā caiva hutāśanam ,
āyuṣyaṁ pāṇḍuputrāṇāmāśāste sa narādhipaḥ.
9. brāhmaṇān vācayitvā ca hutvā ca eva hutāśanam
āyuṣyam pāṇḍuputrāṇām āśāste sa narādhipaḥ
9. ca sa narādhipaḥ brāhmaṇān vācayitvā ca eva
hutāśanam hutvā pāṇḍuputrāṇām āyuṣyam āśāste
9. And, having had the Brahmins pronounce blessings and having offered into the sacred fire, that king indeed wished for the longevity of the sons of Pāṇḍu.
न तां प्रीतिं परामाप पुत्रेभ्यः स महीपतिः ।
यां प्रीतिं पाण्डुपुत्रेभ्यः समवाप तदा नृपः ॥१०॥
10. na tāṁ prītiṁ parāmāpa putrebhyaḥ sa mahīpatiḥ ,
yāṁ prītiṁ pāṇḍuputrebhyaḥ samavāpa tadā nṛpaḥ.
10. na tām prītim parām āpa putrebhyaḥ sa mahīpatiḥ
yām prītim pāṇḍuputrebhyaḥ samavāpa tadā nṛpaḥ
10. sa mahīpatiḥ putrebhyaḥ tām parām prītim na āpa
yām prītim nṛpaḥ pāṇḍuputrebhyaḥ tadā samavāpa
10. That king (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) did not feel for his own sons that supreme affection which he then felt for the sons of Pāṇḍu.
ब्राह्मणानां च वृद्धानां क्षत्रियाणां च भारत ।
तथा विट्शूद्रसंघानामभवत्सुप्रियस्तदा ॥११॥
11. brāhmaṇānāṁ ca vṛddhānāṁ kṣatriyāṇāṁ ca bhārata ,
tathā viṭśūdrasaṁghānāmabhavatsupriyastadā.
11. brāhmaṇānām ca vṛddhānām kṣatriyāṇām ca bhārata
tathā viṭśūdrasaṅghānām abhavat supriyaḥ tadā
11. bhārata ca brāhmaṇānām ca vṛddhānām ca kṣatriyāṇām
tathā viṭśūdrasaṅghānām tadā supriyaḥ abhavat
11. And, O Bhārata (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), he then became very dear to the Brahmins, the elders, the Kṣatriyas, and likewise to the communities of Vaiśyas and Śūdras.
यच्च किंचित्पुरा पापं धृतराष्ट्रसुतैः कृतम् ।
अकृत्वा हृदि तद्राजा तं नृपं सोऽन्ववर्तत ॥१२॥
12. yacca kiṁcitpurā pāpaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭrasutaiḥ kṛtam ,
akṛtvā hṛdi tadrājā taṁ nṛpaṁ so'nvavartata.
12. yat ca kiñcit purā pāpam dhṛtarāṣṭrasutaiḥ kṛtam
akṛtvā hṛdi tat rājā tam nṛpam saḥ anvavartata
12. rājā hṛdi tat pāpam yat ca kiñcit purā
dhṛtarāṣṭrasutaiḥ kṛtam akṛtvā saḥ tam nṛpam anvavartata
12. Whatever wrongdoings Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons had committed in the past, King (Yudhiṣṭhira), without taking them to heart, continued to serve that king (Dhṛtarāṣṭra).
यश्च कश्चिन्नरः किंचिदप्रियं चाम्बिकासुते ।
कुरुते द्वेष्यतामेति स कौन्तेयस्य धीमतः ॥१३॥
13. yaśca kaścinnaraḥ kiṁcidapriyaṁ cāmbikāsute ,
kurute dveṣyatāmeti sa kaunteyasya dhīmataḥ.
13. yaḥ ca kaścit naraḥ kiñcit apriyam ca ambikāsute
kurute dveṣyatām eti saḥ kaunteyasya dhīmataḥ
13. yaḥ ca kaścit naraḥ ambikāsute kiñcit apriyam ca
kurute saḥ dhīmataḥ kaunteyasya dveṣyatām eti
13. Any man who does anything unpleasant or harmful to the son of Ambikā (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) incurs the enmity of the intelligent son of Kuntī (Yudhiṣṭhira).
न राज्ञो धृतराष्ट्रस्य न च दुर्योधनस्य वै ।
उवाच दुष्कृतं किंचिद्युधिष्ठिरभयान्नरः ॥१४॥
14. na rājño dhṛtarāṣṭrasya na ca duryodhanasya vai ,
uvāca duṣkṛtaṁ kiṁcidyudhiṣṭhirabhayānnaraḥ.
14. na rājñaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya na ca duryodhanasya vai
uvāca duṣkṛtam kiñcit yudhiṣṭhirabhayāt naraḥ
14. naraḥ kiñcit duṣkṛtam rājñaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya ca
duryodhanasya vai na uvāca yudhiṣṭhirabhayāt
14. Indeed, no one spoke any wrong about King Dhṛtarāṣṭra or Duryodhana, out of fear of Yudhiṣṭhira.
धृत्या तुष्टो नरेन्द्रस्य गान्धारी विदुरस्तथा ।
शौचेन चाजातशत्रोर्न तु भीमस्य शत्रुहन् ॥१५॥
15. dhṛtyā tuṣṭo narendrasya gāndhārī vidurastathā ,
śaucena cājātaśatrorna tu bhīmasya śatruhan.
15. dhṛtyā tuṣṭaḥ narendrasya gāndhārī viduraḥ tathā
śaucena ca ajātaśatroḥ na tu bhīmasya śatruhant
15. gāndhārī tathā viduraḥ narendrasya dhṛtyā tuṣṭaḥ ca ajātaśatroḥ śaucena (tuṣṭaḥ),
śatruhant,
bhīmasya tu na (tuṣṭaḥ)
15. Gāndhārī, and Vidura likewise, was pleased by King (Dhṛtarāṣṭra)'s steadfastness (dhṛti). And O slayer of enemies, (they were pleased) by the purity of Ajātaśatru (Yudhiṣṭhira), but not by Bhīma's.
अन्ववर्तत भीमोऽपि निष्टनन्धर्मजं नृपम् ।
धृतराष्ट्रं च संप्रेक्ष्य सदा भवति दुर्मनाः ॥१६॥
16. anvavartata bhīmo'pi niṣṭanandharmajaṁ nṛpam ,
dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ ca saṁprekṣya sadā bhavati durmanāḥ.
16. anvavartata bhīmaḥ api niṣṭanan dharmajaṃ nṛpam
dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ ca saṃprekṣya sadā bhavati durmanāḥ
16. bhīmaḥ api niṣṭanan dharmajaṃ nṛpam anvavartata
dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ ca saṃprekṣya sadā durmanāḥ bhavati
16. Bhima also followed the king, the son of dharma (Yudhiṣṭhira), groaning. And upon seeing Dhṛtarāṣṭra, he always became dejected.
राजानमनुवर्तन्तं धर्मपुत्रं महामतिम् ।
अन्ववर्तत कौरव्यो हृदयेन पराङ्मुखः ॥१७॥
17. rājānamanuvartantaṁ dharmaputraṁ mahāmatim ,
anvavartata kauravyo hṛdayena parāṅmukhaḥ.
17. rājānam anuvartantam dharmaputram mahāmatim
anvavartata kauravyaḥ hṛdayena parāṅmukhaḥ
17. kauravyaḥ parāṅmukhaḥ hṛdayena mahāmatim
dharmaputram rājānam anuvartantam anvavartata
17. The Kuru prince followed the great-minded king, the son of dharma (Yudhiṣṭhira), who was himself compliant (with the circumstances), but the Kuru prince did so with a disinclined heart.
