वैशंपायन उवाच ।
गते द्वारवतीं कृष्णे बलदेवे च माधवे ।
सह वृष्ण्यन्धकैः सर्वैर्भोजैश्च शतशस्तथा ॥१॥

gate dvāravatīṁ kṛṣṇe baladeve ca mādhave ,
saha vṛṣṇyandhakaiḥ sarvairbhojaiśca śataśastathā.

सर्वमागमयामास पाण्डवानां विचेष्टितम् ।
धृतराष्ट्रात्मजो राजा दूतैः प्रणिहितैश्चरैः ॥२॥
2. sarvamāgamayāmāsa pāṇḍavānāṁ viceṣṭitam ,
dhṛtarāṣṭrātmajo rājā dūtaiḥ praṇihitaiścaraiḥ.
2. sarvam āgamayāmāsa pāṇḍavānām viceṣṭitam |
dhṛtarāṣṭra-ātmajaḥ rājā dūtaiḥ praṇihitaiḥ caraiḥ
2. ...the king, Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son (Duryodhana), came to know all the activities of the Pāṇḍavas through his appointed spies and messengers.
स श्रुत्वा माधवं यातं सदश्वैरनिलोपमैः ।
बलेन नातिमहता द्वारकामभ्ययात्पुरीम् ॥३॥
3. sa śrutvā mādhavaṁ yātaṁ sadaśvairanilopamaiḥ ,
balena nātimahatā dvārakāmabhyayātpurīm.
3. saḥ śrutvā mādhavam yātam sat-aśvaiḥ anila-upamaiḥ
| balena na ati-mahatā dvārakām abhyayāt purīm
3. Having heard that Madhava (Kṛṣṇa) had gone with excellent, wind-like horses, he approached the city of Dvārakā with a force that was not very large.
तमेव दिवसं चापि कौन्तेयः पाण्डुनन्दनः ।
आनर्तनगरीं रम्यां जगामाशु धनंजयः ॥४॥
4. tameva divasaṁ cāpi kaunteyaḥ pāṇḍunandanaḥ ,
ānartanagarīṁ ramyāṁ jagāmāśu dhanaṁjayaḥ.
4. tam eva divasam ca api kaunteyaḥ pāṇḍu-nandanaḥ
| ānarta-nagarīm ramyām jagāma āśu dhanañjayaḥ
4. And on that very same day, Kaunteya, the son of Pāṇḍu, Dhananjaya (Arjuna), quickly went to the beautiful city of Ānarta.
तौ यात्वा पुरुषव्याघ्रौ द्वारकां कुरुनन्दनौ ।
सुप्तं ददृशतुः कृष्णं शयानं चोपजग्मतुः ॥५॥
5. tau yātvā puruṣavyāghrau dvārakāṁ kurunandanau ,
suptaṁ dadṛśatuḥ kṛṣṇaṁ śayānaṁ copajagmatuḥ.
5. tau yātvā puruṣavyāghrau dvārakām kurunandanau
suptam dadṛśatuḥ kṛṣṇam śayānam ca upajagmatuḥ
5. Those two excellent men, the Kuru princes (Arjuna and Duryodhana), having gone to Dvārakā, saw Kṛṣṇa sleeping and approached him as he lay there.
ततः शयाने गोविन्दे प्रविवेश सुयोधनः ।
उच्छीर्षतश्च कृष्णस्य निषसाद वरासने ॥६॥
6. tataḥ śayāne govinde praviveśa suyodhanaḥ ,
ucchīrṣataśca kṛṣṇasya niṣasāda varāsane.
6. tataḥ śayāne govinde praviveśa suyodhanaḥ
ucchīrṣataḥ ca kṛṣṇasya niṣasāda varāsane
6. Then, as Govinda lay there, Suyodhana entered. And he sat down on an excellent seat by Kṛṣṇa's head.
ततः किरीटी तस्यानु प्रविवेश महामनाः ।
पश्चार्धे च स कृष्णस्य प्रह्वोऽतिष्ठत्कृताञ्जलिः ॥७॥
7. tataḥ kirīṭī tasyānu praviveśa mahāmanāḥ ,
paścārdhe ca sa kṛṣṇasya prahvo'tiṣṭhatkṛtāñjaliḥ.
7. tataḥ kirīṭī tasya anu praviveśa mahāmanāḥ paścārdhe
ca saḥ kṛṣṇasya prahvaḥ atiṣṭhat kṛtāñjaliḥ
7. Then, the crowned one (Arjuna), the magnanimous one, entered after him. And he stood humbly at Kṛṣṇa's feet, with folded hands.
प्रतिबुद्धः स वार्ष्णेयो ददर्शाग्रे किरीटिनम् ।
स तयोः स्वागतं कृत्वा यथार्हं प्रतिपूज्य च ।
तदागमनजं हेतुं पप्रच्छ मधुसूदनः ॥८॥
8. pratibuddhaḥ sa vārṣṇeyo dadarśāgre kirīṭinam ,
sa tayoḥ svāgataṁ kṛtvā yathārhaṁ pratipūjya ca ,
tadāgamanajaṁ hetuṁ papraccha madhusūdanaḥ.
8. pratibuddhaḥ saḥ vārṣṇeyaḥ dadarśa
agre kirīṭinam saḥ tayoḥ svāgatam
kṛtvā yathārham pratipūjya ca
tadāgamanajam hetum papraccha madhusūdanaḥ
8. Having awakened, Vārṣṇeya (Kṛṣṇa) saw the crowned one (Arjuna) in front. Then, having welcomed and appropriately honored those two, Madhusūdana (Kṛṣṇa) asked the reason for their arrival.
ततो दुर्योधनः कृष्णमुवाच प्रहसन्निव ।
विग्रहेऽस्मिन्भवान्साह्यं मम दातुमिहार्हति ॥९॥
9. tato duryodhanaḥ kṛṣṇamuvāca prahasanniva ,
vigrahe'sminbhavānsāhyaṁ mama dātumihārhati.
9. tataḥ duryodhanaḥ kṛṣṇam uvāca prahasan iva
vigrahe asmin bhavān sāhyam mama dātum iha arhati
9. Then Duryodhana, as if laughing, said to Kṛṣṇa, "In this conflict, you ought to grant me your assistance."
समं हि भवतः सख्यं मयि चैवार्जुनेऽपि च ।
तथा संबन्धकं तुल्यमस्माकं त्वयि माधव ॥१०॥
10. samaṁ hi bhavataḥ sakhyaṁ mayi caivārjune'pi ca ,
tathā saṁbandhakaṁ tulyamasmākaṁ tvayi mādhava.
10. samam hi bhavataḥ sakhyam mayi ca eva arjune api
ca tathā saṃbandhakam tulyam asmākam tvayi mādhava
10. Indeed, your friendship toward me and Arjuna is equal. Likewise, O Mādhava, our kinship with you is equal.
अहं चाभिगतः पूर्वं त्वामद्य मधुसूदन ।
पूर्वं चाभिगतं सन्तो भजन्ते पूर्वसारिणः ॥११॥
11. ahaṁ cābhigataḥ pūrvaṁ tvāmadya madhusūdana ,
pūrvaṁ cābhigataṁ santo bhajante pūrvasāriṇaḥ.
11. aham ca abhigataḥ pūrvam tvām adya madhusūdana
pūrvam ca abhigatam santaḥ bhajante pūrvasāriṇaḥ
11. And I, O Madhusūdana, have approached you first today. Verily, the virtuous honor those who arrive first.
त्वं च श्रेष्ठतमो लोके सतामद्य जनार्दन ।
सततं संमतश्चैव सद्वृत्तमनुपालय ॥१२॥
12. tvaṁ ca śreṣṭhatamo loke satāmadya janārdana ,
satataṁ saṁmataścaiva sadvṛttamanupālaya.
12. tvam ca śreṣṭhatamaḥ loke satām adya janārdana
satatam saṃmataḥ ca eva sadvṛttam anupālaya
12. And you, O Janārdana, are the most excellent among the virtuous in the world today. Since you are always esteemed, uphold the conduct of the good.
कृष्ण उवाच ।
भवानभिगतः पूर्वमत्र मे नास्ति संशयः ।
दृष्टस्तु प्रथमं राजन्मया पार्थो धनंजयः ॥१३॥
13. kṛṣṇa uvāca ,
bhavānabhigataḥ pūrvamatra me nāsti saṁśayaḥ ,
dṛṣṭastu prathamaṁ rājanmayā pārtho dhanaṁjayaḥ.
13. kṛṣṇaḥ uvāca bhavān abhigataḥ pūrvam atra me na asti
saṃśayaḥ dṛṣṭaḥ tu prathamam rājan mayā pārthaḥ dhanañjayaḥ
13. Krishna said: "There is no doubt in my mind that you approached me first. However, O King, Arjuna Dhananjaya was seen by me first."
तव पूर्वाभिगमनात्पूर्वं चाप्यस्य दर्शनात् ।
साहाय्यमुभयोरेव करिष्यामि सुयोधन ॥१४॥
14. tava pūrvābhigamanātpūrvaṁ cāpyasya darśanāt ,
sāhāyyamubhayoreva kariṣyāmi suyodhana.
14. tava pūrvābhigamanāt pūrvam ca api asya darśanāt
sāhāyyam ubhayoḥ eva kariṣyāmi suyodhana
14. Since you came first and I saw him first, O Suyodhana, I will offer assistance to both of you.
प्रवारणं तु बालानां पूर्वं कार्यमिति श्रुतिः ।
तस्मात्प्रवारणं पूर्वमर्हः पार्थो धनंजयः ॥१५॥
15. pravāraṇaṁ tu bālānāṁ pūrvaṁ kāryamiti śrutiḥ ,
tasmātpravāraṇaṁ pūrvamarhaḥ pārtho dhanaṁjayaḥ.
15. pravāraṇam tu bālānām pūrvam kāryam iti śrutiḥ
tasmāt pravāraṇam pūrvam arhaḥ pārthaḥ dhanañjayaḥ
15. Indeed, it is a scriptural tradition (śruti) that children should be given their choice first. Therefore, Arjuna Dhananjaya deserves the first preference.
मत्संहननतुल्यानां गोपानामर्बुदं महत् ।
नारायणा इति ख्याताः सर्वे संग्रामयोधिनः ॥१६॥
16. matsaṁhananatulyānāṁ gopānāmarbudaṁ mahat ,
nārāyaṇā iti khyātāḥ sarve saṁgrāmayodhinaḥ.
16. matsaṃhananatulyānām gopānām arbudaṃ mahat
nārāyaṇāḥ iti khyātāḥ sarve saṃgrāmayodhinaḥ
16. There is a great multitude (arbuda) of cowherds, equal to my own strength, renowned as Nārayaṇas, all of whom are warriors in battle.
ते वा युधि दुराधर्षा भवन्त्वेकस्य सैनिकाः ।
अयुध्यमानः संग्रामे न्यस्तशस्त्रोऽहमेकतः ॥१७॥
17. te vā yudhi durādharṣā bhavantvekasya sainikāḥ ,
ayudhyamānaḥ saṁgrāme nyastaśastro'hamekataḥ.
17. te vā yudhi durādharṣāḥ bhavantu ekasya sainikāḥ
ayudhyamānaḥ saṃgrāme nyastaśastraḥ aham ekataḥ
17. Let those unconquerable warriors be the soldiers for one side in battle, or I, a non-combatant who has laid down his weapons, will be on the other side.
आभ्यामन्यतरं पार्थ यत्ते हृद्यतरं मतम् ।
तद्वृणीतां भवानग्रे प्रवार्यस्त्वं हि धर्मतः ॥१८॥
18. ābhyāmanyataraṁ pārtha yatte hṛdyataraṁ matam ,
tadvṛṇītāṁ bhavānagre pravāryastvaṁ hi dharmataḥ.
18. ābhyām anyataram pārtha yat te hṛdyataram matam
tat vṛṇītām bhavān agre pravāryaḥ tvam hi dharmataḥ
18. O Pārtha, you should choose whichever of these two is considered more agreeable to your heart, for you are indeed to be offered the first choice by (dharma) natural law.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्तस्तु कृष्णेन कुन्तीपुत्रो धनंजयः ।
अयुध्यमानं संग्रामे वरयामास केशवम् ॥१९॥
19. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamuktastu kṛṣṇena kuntīputro dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
ayudhyamānaṁ saṁgrāme varayāmāsa keśavam.
19. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca evam uktaḥ tu kṛṣṇena kuntīputraḥ
dhanaṃjayaḥ ayudhyamānam saṃgrāme varayāmāsa keśavam
19. Vaiśampāyana said: However, having been addressed thus by Kṛṣṇa, Dhanañjaya, the son of Kuntī, chose Keśava, who would remain a non-combatant in the conflict.
सहस्राणां सहस्रं तु योधानां प्राप्य भारत ।
कृष्णं चापहृतं ज्ञात्वा संप्राप परमां मुदम् ॥२०॥
20. sahasrāṇāṁ sahasraṁ tu yodhānāṁ prāpya bhārata ,
kṛṣṇaṁ cāpahṛtaṁ jñātvā saṁprāpa paramāṁ mudam.
20. sahasrāṇām sahasram tu yodhānām prāpya bhārata
kṛṣṇam ca apahṛtam jñātvā saṃprāpa paramām mudam
20. But, O Bhārata, having acquired a thousand times a thousand warriors, and realizing that Kṛṣṇa had been taken (as a non-combatant), he attained supreme joy.
दुर्योधनस्तु तत्सैन्यं सर्वमादाय पार्थिवः ।
ततोऽभ्ययाद्भीमबलो रौहिणेयं महाबलम् ॥२१॥
21. duryodhanastu tatsainyaṁ sarvamādāya pārthivaḥ ,
tato'bhyayādbhīmabalo rauhiṇeyaṁ mahābalam.
21. duryodhanaḥ tu tat sainyam sarvam ādāya pārthivaḥ
tataḥ abhyayāt bhīmabalaḥ rauhiṇeyam mahābalam
21. King Duryodhana, however, of formidable strength, having taken his entire army, then approached Balarama, the greatly powerful son of Rohiṇī.
सर्वं चागमने हेतुं स तस्मै संन्यवेदयत् ।
प्रत्युवाच ततः शौरिर्धार्तराष्ट्रमिदं वचः ॥२२॥
22. sarvaṁ cāgamane hetuṁ sa tasmai saṁnyavedayat ,
pratyuvāca tataḥ śaurirdhārtarāṣṭramidaṁ vacaḥ.
22. sarvam ca āgamane hetum saḥ tasmai samnyavedayat
pratyuvāca tataḥ śauriḥ dhārtarāṣṭram idam vacaḥ
22. Duryodhana explained to him (Balarama) all the reasons for his arrival. Then Śauri (Balarama) replied to the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Duryodhana) with these words.
विदितं ते नरव्याघ्र सर्वं भवितुमर्हति ।
यन्मयोक्तं विराटस्य पुरा वैवाहिके तदा ॥२३॥
23. viditaṁ te naravyāghra sarvaṁ bhavitumarhati ,
yanmayoktaṁ virāṭasya purā vaivāhike tadā.
23. viditam te naravyāghra sarvam bhavitum arhati
yat mayā uktam virāṭasya purā vaivāhike tadā
23. "O tiger among men, everything that I said previously, at the time of Virāṭa's marriage, should certainly be known to you."
निगृह्योक्तो हृषीकेशस्त्वदर्थं कुरुनन्दन ।
मया संबन्धकं तुल्यमिति राजन्पुनः पुनः ॥२४॥
24. nigṛhyokto hṛṣīkeśastvadarthaṁ kurunandana ,
mayā saṁbandhakaṁ tulyamiti rājanpunaḥ punaḥ.
24. nigṛhya uktaḥ hṛṣīkeśaḥ tvadartham kurunandana
mayā sambandhakam tulyam iti rājan punaḥ punaḥ
24. "O delight of the Kurus, O King, it was I who repeatedly said to Hṛṣīkeśa (Krishna), restraining him for your sake, that the relationship (between the two parties) should be treated as equal."
न च तद्वाक्यमुक्तं वै केशवः प्रत्यपद्यत ।
न चाहमुत्सहे कृष्णं विना स्थातुमपि क्षणम् ॥२५॥
25. na ca tadvākyamuktaṁ vai keśavaḥ pratyapadyata ,
na cāhamutsahe kṛṣṇaṁ vinā sthātumapi kṣaṇam.
25. na ca tat vākyam uktam vai keśavaḥ pratyapadyata
na ca aham utsahe kṛṣṇam vinā sthātum api kṣaṇam
25. Keśava did not accept that statement, and I am unable to remain even for a moment without Kṛṣṇa.
नाहं सहायः पार्थानां नापि दुर्योधनस्य वै ।
इति मे निश्चिता बुद्दिर्वासुदेवमवेक्ष्य ह ॥२६॥
26. nāhaṁ sahāyaḥ pārthānāṁ nāpi duryodhanasya vai ,
iti me niścitā buddirvāsudevamavekṣya ha.
26. na aham sahāyaḥ pārthānām na api duryodhanasya
vai iti me niścitā buddhiḥ vāsudevam avekṣya ha
26. I am not an ally of the Pārthas, nor indeed of Duryodhana. Such is my resolute decision, having considered Vāsudeva.
जातोऽसि भारते वंशे सर्वपार्थिवपूजिते ।
गच्छ युध्यस्व धर्मेण क्षात्रेण भरतर्षभ ॥२७॥
27. jāto'si bhārate vaṁśe sarvapārthivapūjite ,
gaccha yudhyasva dharmeṇa kṣātreṇa bharatarṣabha.
27. jātaḥ asi bhārate vaṃśe sarvapārthivapūjite
gaccha yudhyasva dharmeṇa kṣātreṇa bharatarṣabha
27. You are born in the Bhārata lineage, which is honored by all rulers. Go and fight according to your inherent duty (dharma) as a warrior (kṣātra), O chief of the Bhāratas.
इत्येवमुक्तः स तदा परिष्वज्य हलायुधम् ।
कृष्णं चापहृतं ज्ञात्वा युद्धान्मेने जितं जयम् ॥२८॥
28. ityevamuktaḥ sa tadā pariṣvajya halāyudham ,
kṛṣṇaṁ cāpahṛtaṁ jñātvā yuddhānmene jitaṁ jayam.
28. iti evam uktaḥ sa tadā pariṣvajya halāyudham
kṛṣṇam ca apahṛtam jñātvā yuddhāt mene jitam jayam
28. Having been addressed in this manner, he then embraced Halāyudha (Balarāma). And knowing that Kṛṣṇa had been taken away (from their side), he considered the battle's victory to be already secured.
सोऽभ्ययात्कृतवर्माणं धृतराष्ट्रसुतो नृपः ।
कृतवर्मा ददौ तस्य सेनामक्षौहिणीं तदा ॥२९॥
29. so'bhyayātkṛtavarmāṇaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭrasuto nṛpaḥ ,
kṛtavarmā dadau tasya senāmakṣauhiṇīṁ tadā.
29. saḥ abhyayāt kṛtavarmāṇam dhṛtarāṣṭrasutaḥ nṛpaḥ
kṛtavarmā dadau tasya senām akṣauhiṇīm tadā
29. Then, King Duryodhana, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, approached Kṛtavarmā. Kṛtavarmā then gave him an akṣauhiṇī (a large division of army).
स तेन सर्वसैन्येन भीमेन कुरुनन्दनः ।
वृतः प्रतिययौ हृष्टः सुहृदः संप्रहर्षयन् ॥३०॥
30. sa tena sarvasainyena bhīmena kurunandanaḥ ,
vṛtaḥ pratiyayau hṛṣṭaḥ suhṛdaḥ saṁpraharṣayan.
30. saḥ tena sarvasainyena bhīmena kurunandanaḥ
vṛtaḥ pratiyayau hṛṣṭaḥ suhṛdaḥ sampraharṣayan
30. That prince of the Kurus (Duryodhana), surrounded by that entire army and Bhīma, returned joyful, delighting his friends.
गते दुर्योधने कृष्णः किरीटिनमथाब्रवीत् ।
अयुध्यमानः कां बुद्धिमास्थायाहं त्वया वृतः ॥३१॥
31. gate duryodhane kṛṣṇaḥ kirīṭinamathābravīt ,
ayudhyamānaḥ kāṁ buddhimāsthāyāhaṁ tvayā vṛtaḥ.
31. gate duryodhane kṛṣṇaḥ kirīṭinam atha abravīt
ayudhyamānaḥ kām buddhim āsthāya aham tvayā vṛtaḥ
31. After Duryodhana had departed, Kṛṣṇa then said to Arjuna, 'What understanding did I, who remain neutral (ayudhyamānaḥ), rely upon when chosen by you?'
अर्जुन उवाच ।
भवान्समर्थस्तान्सर्वान्निहन्तुं नात्र संशयः ।
निहन्तुमहमप्येकः समर्थः पुरुषोत्तम ॥३२॥
32. arjuna uvāca ,
bhavānsamarthastānsarvānnihantuṁ nātra saṁśayaḥ ,
nihantumahamapyekaḥ samarthaḥ puruṣottama.
32. arjunaḥ uvāca bhavān samarthaḥ tān sarvān nihantum na atra
saṃśayaḥ nihantum aham api ekaḥ samarthaḥ puruṣottama
32. Arjuna said: 'You are capable of slaying all of them; there is no doubt about that. O best among men (puruṣottama), I alone am also capable of slaying them.'
भवांस्तु कीर्तिमाँल्लोके तद्यशस्त्वां गमिष्यति ।
यशसा चाहमप्यर्थी तस्मादसि मया वृतः ॥३३॥
33. bhavāṁstu kīrtimāँlloke tadyaśastvāṁ gamiṣyati ,
yaśasā cāhamapyarthī tasmādasi mayā vṛtaḥ.
33. bhavān tu kīrtimān loke tat yaśas tvām gamiṣyati
yaśasā ca aham api arthī tasmāt asi mayā vṛtaḥ
33. You are indeed renowned in the world, and that fame will come to you. I am also desirous of such fame, therefore you have been chosen by me.
सारथ्यं तु त्वया कार्यमिति मे मानसं सदा ।
चिररात्रेप्सितं कामं तद्भवान्कर्तुमर्हति ॥३४॥
34. sārathyaṁ tu tvayā kāryamiti me mānasaṁ sadā ,
cirarātrepsitaṁ kāmaṁ tadbhavānkartumarhati.
34. sārathyam tu tvayā kāryam iti me mānasam sadā
cirarātrepsitam kāmam tat bhavān kartum arhati
34. But indeed, my constant desire (mānasa) has always been that you should perform the charioteering. You are qualified to fulfill this long-cherished wish.
वासुदेव उवाच ।
उपपन्नमिदं पार्थ यत्स्पर्धेथा मया सह ।
सारथ्यं ते करिष्यामि कामः संपद्यतां तव ॥३५॥
35. vāsudeva uvāca ,
upapannamidaṁ pārtha yatspardhethā mayā saha ,
sārathyaṁ te kariṣyāmi kāmaḥ saṁpadyatāṁ tava.
35. vāsudeva uvāca upapannam idam pārtha yat spardhethāḥ
mayā saha sārathyam te kariṣyāmi kāmaḥ sampadyatām tava
35. Vāsudeva said: "This is indeed fitting, O Pārtha, that you vie with me. I will be your charioteer; let your wish (kāma) be fulfilled."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवं प्रमुदितः पार्थः कृष्णेन सहितस्तदा ।
वृतो दाशार्हप्रवरैः पुनरायाद्युधिष्ठिरम् ॥३६॥
36. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evaṁ pramuditaḥ pārthaḥ kṛṣṇena sahitastadā ,
vṛto dāśārhapravaraiḥ punarāyādyudhiṣṭhiram.
36. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca evam pramuditaḥ pārthaḥ kṛṣṇena sahitaḥ
tadā vṛtaḥ dāśārhapravaraiḥ punaḥ āyāt yudhiṣṭhiram
36. Vaiśampāyana said: "Thus, the joyful Pārtha (Arjuna), accompanied by Krishna, and surrounded by the foremost of the Dāśārhas (Krishna's clan), then returned to Yudhiṣṭhira."
