1.
Arjuna said: Then, Indra, whose vehicle is horses, having touched me – who was now adept in weaponry and filled with confidence – on the head with both hands, spoke the following words.
न त्वमद्य युधा जेतुं शक्यः सुरगणैरपि ।

2.
Today, you cannot be defeated in battle, not even by the hosts of gods. How much less, then, in the human world by humans who have not trained their selves (ātman). You are immeasurable, invincible, and, in battles, unequalled.

3.
Then the god, whose body hair stood erect with great delight, spoke again: 'O hero, no one will be your equal in the battle of missiles.'

4.
O foremost among the Kurus (kurūdvaha), you are always vigilant, skilled, truthful, one who has conquered his senses (jitendriya), devoted to brahmanas, and knowledgeable in missile lore; you are also brave.

5.
O Pārtha, you have acquired fifteen missiles (astrāṇi) by five methods. There is none equal to you.

6.
O Dhanañjaya, you fully know the deployment (prayoga), withdrawal (upasaṃhāra), and repetition (āvṛtti) [of missiles], as well as the atonement (prāyaścitta) and counteraction (pratighāta) for them.

7.
O tormentor of foes, the time for fulfilling your guru's purpose has now arrived. Promise to accomplish that, and from this, I shall know what is next.

8.
Then, O king, I spoke this word to the king of gods (Indra): "If it is accomplishable by me, then consider it as already done."
ततो मामब्रवीद्राजन्प्रहस्य बलवृत्रहा ।

9.
Then, O king, the slayer of Bala and Vṛtra (Indra) said to me, having laughed: "Today there is nothing in the three worlds that is impossible for you to accomplish."

10.
My enemies, the Dānavas named Nivātakavacas, reside in a fortress, having taken refuge in the depths of the ocean.

11.
O son of Kunti, three crores (ten millions) [of warriors] are reckoned to possess equal form, strength, and splendor. Slay them there; your teacher's purpose will then be fulfilled.

12.
Then he gave me a divine, greatly effulgent chariot, equipped with horses whose hairs resembled peacock feathers, and driven by Matali.

13.
And he placed this excellent diadem on my head. He also gave me body ornaments that were suitable for my figure.

14.
And he provided this impenetrable, excellent armor, which possessed a pleasing touch and fine form. Furthermore, he fitted this undecaying bowstring onto the Gaṇḍīva bow.

15.
Then I went forth by means of that splendid chariot, the same one by which Indra, the lord of the gods, formerly conquered Bali, the son of Virocana.
ततो देवाः सर्व एव तेन घोषेण बोधितः ।

16.
Then all the gods, roused by that sound, came together, thinking I was their lord (devarāja). O lord of the people (viśāṃ pate), having seen me, they asked: "What will you do, O Phalguna?"

17.
I truthfully told them: "I am indeed the one who will accomplish this in battle. I have set out, intent on the destruction of the Nivātakavacas. O noble ones, O sinless ones, understand this and wish me well."
तुष्टुवुर्मां प्रसन्नास्ते यथा देवं पुरंदरम् ।

18.
Pleased, they praised me just as they praise the god Purandara (Indra). By this very chariot, Maghavan (Indra) conquered Śambara in battle, as well as Namuci, Bala and Vṛtra, and Prahrāda and Naraka.

19.
And with this chariot, Maghavan (Indra) conquered many thousands, millions, and hundreds of millions of Daityas in battle.

20.
O son of Kunti (Arjuna), you too, by displaying valor in battle with this [chariot], will conquer the Nivātakavacas in battle, just as Maghavan (Indra), the master, did before.

21.
And with this excellent conch shell, you will conquer the Dānavas. Even the great-souled Indra conquered worlds with this [conch].

22.
However, I accepted this conch named Devadatta, which is born from water and was being offered by the gods, for the sake of victory, while I was being praised by the immortals at that time.

23.
I, bearing a conch, wearing armor, equipped with arrows, and holding a bow, have gone to the exceedingly fierce abode of the demons with the intention of fighting.
