1. duryodhana uvāca ,
yadāha viduraḥ kṛṣṇe sarvaṁ tatsatyamucyate ,
anurakto hyasaṁhāryaḥ pārthānprati janārdanaḥ.
yadāha viduraḥ kṛṣṇe sarvaṁ tatsatyamucyate ,
anurakto hyasaṁhāryaḥ pārthānprati janārdanaḥ.
1.
duryodhanaḥ uvāca yat āha viduraḥ kṛṣṇe sarvam tat satyam
ucyate anuraktaḥ hi asaṃhāryaḥ pārthān prati janārdanaḥ
ucyate anuraktaḥ hi asaṃhāryaḥ pārthān prati janārdanaḥ
1.
Duryodhana said, "What Vidura has said concerning Krishna—all of that is spoken truly. For Janārdana (Krishna) is indeed deeply attached to the Pāṇḍavas and cannot be alienated from them."
2. yattu satkārasaṁyuktaṁ deyaṁ vasu janārdane ,
anekarūpaṁ rājendra na taddeyaṁ kadācana.
anekarūpaṁ rājendra na taddeyaṁ kadācana.
2.
yat tu satkārasaṃyuktam deyam vasu janārdane
anekarūpam rājendra na tat deyam kadācana
anekarūpam rājendra na tat deyam kadācana
2.
But, O king of kings, whatever respectful offering or wealth of various kinds is to be given to Janārdana (Krishna), that should never be given.
3. deśaḥ kālastathāyukto na hi nārhati keśavaḥ ,

maṁsyatyadhokṣajo rājanbhayādarcati māmiti.
3.

maṃsyati adhokṣajaḥ rājan bhayāt arcati mām iti
maṃsyati adhokṣajaḥ rājan bhayāt arcati mām iti
3.
Even though the place and time are thus suitable, Keśava certainly deserves reverence. However, O King, Adhokṣaja (Krishna) will think, 'He is worshipping me out of fear.'
4. avamānaśca yatra syātkṣatriyasya viśāṁ pate ,

na tatkuryādbudhaḥ kāryamiti me niścitā matiḥ.
4.
avamānaḥ ca yatra syāt kṣatriyasya viśām pate na
tat kuryāt budhaḥ kāryam iti me niścitā matiḥ
tat kuryāt budhaḥ kāryam iti me niścitā matiḥ
4.
O lord of men, where there would be disrespect for a kṣatriya, a wise person should not perform that action (even) thinking, 'This is my duty (dharma).' This is my firm conviction.
5. sa hi pūjyatamo devaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ kamalalocanaḥ ,
trayāṇāmapi lokānāṁ viditaṁ mama sarvathā.
trayāṇāmapi lokānāṁ viditaṁ mama sarvathā.
5.
saḥ hi pūjyatamaḥ devaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ kamalalocanaḥ
trayāṇām api lokānām viditam mama sarvathā
trayāṇām api lokānām viditam mama sarvathā
5.
Indeed, that lotus-eyed God, Krishna, is the most worshipable. This is entirely known to me, as it is to all three worlds.
6. na tu tasminpradeyaṁ syāttathā kāryagatiḥ prabho ,

vigrahaḥ samupārabdho na hi śāmyatyavigrahāt.
6.
na tu tasmin pradeyam syāt tathā kāryagatiḥ prabho
vigrahaḥ samupārabdhaḥ na hi śāmyati avigrahāt
vigrahaḥ samupārabdhaḥ na hi śāmyati avigrahāt
6.
But, O lord, no such offering should be made to him (Krishna) in this situation, for such is the nature of affairs. Indeed, a conflict, once begun, will certainly not subside through peaceful means.

7. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,

7.
Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard those words, Bhīṣma, the great-grandfather of the Kurus, spoke these words to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the son of Vicitravīrya.

na alam anyam avajñātum avajñātaḥ api keśavaḥ
na alam anyam avajñātum avajñātaḥ api keśavaḥ
8.
Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa) does not become angry, whether he is honored or dishonored. Even when disrespected, Keśava (Kṛṣṇa) is not inclined to disrespect others.

sarvopāyaiḥ na tat śakyam kenacit kartum anyathā
9.
But whatever task, O mighty-armed (one), has been settled upon in the mind, that cannot by any means be accomplished otherwise by anyone.
10. sa yadbrūyānmahābāhustatkāryamaviśaṅkayā ,

10.

vāsudevena tīrthena kṣipram saṃśāmya pāṇḍavaiḥ
vāsudevena tīrthena kṣipram saṃśāmya pāṇḍavaiḥ
10.
Whatever that mighty-armed (Kṛṣṇa) says, that task should be done without doubt. Quickly reconcile with the Pāṇḍavas, taking Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) as the sacred guide (tīrtha).

11. dharmyamarthyaṁ sa dharmātmā dhruvaṁ vaktā janārdanaḥ ,

11.

| tasmin vācyāḥ priyāḥ vācaḥ bhavatā bāndhavaiḥ saha
| tasmin vācyāḥ priyāḥ vācaḥ bhavatā bāndhavaiḥ saha
11.
That Janārdana, whose intrinsic nature (dharma) is righteousness, will certainly speak what is righteous and beneficial. Therefore, you should speak kind words to him, along with your relatives.

12.

aham | taiḥ saha imām upāśnīyām jīvan jīvaiḥ pitāmaha
12.
Duryodhana said, "O King, there is no way (paryāya) that I, while living, can enjoy this exclusive prosperity (śriyam) with them. O Grandfather!"

idam tu su mahat kāryam śṛṇu me yat samarthitam
| parāyaṇam pāṇḍavānām niyaṃsyāmi janārdanam
| parāyaṇam pāṇḍavānām niyaṃsyāmi janārdanam
13.
Now listen to this very important plan (kāryam) that I have conceived: I will restrain Janārdana, who is the sole support of the Pāṇḍavas.
14. tasminbaddhe bhaviṣyanti vṛṣṇayaḥ pṛthivī tathā ,

14.

| pāṇḍavāḥ ca vidheyāḥ me saḥ ca prātaḥ iha eṣyati
| pāṇḍavāḥ ca vidheyāḥ me saḥ ca prātaḥ iha eṣyati
14.
Once he is bound, the Vṛṣṇis and the earth will become subservient. The Pāṇḍavas too will become obedient to me. And he will come here tomorrow morning.

15. atropāyaṁ yathā samyaṅna budhyeta janārdanaḥ ,

ca apāyaḥ bhavet kaścit tat bhavān prabravītu me
ca apāyaḥ bhavet kaścit tat bhavān prabravītu me
15.
Therefore, Your Honor, please tell me a strategy by which Janardana (Krishna) will not fully comprehend the means, and no harm will befall anyone.

16.
Vaishampayana said: Having heard his dreadful speech concerning Krishna, King Dhritarashtra, along with his ministers, became agitated and disheartened.

17.
Then Dhritarashtra said this to Duryodhana: 'O protector of the people (prajāpāla), do not speak in this manner; this is not the eternal (sanātana) natural law (dharma).'

naḥ apāpaḥ kauraveyeṣu katham bandhanam arhati
18.
For Hrishikesha (Krishna) is indeed a messenger, a relative, and dear to us. Being blameless concerning the Kauravas, how can he deserve imprisonment?

19.
Bhishma said: This son of Dhritarashtra, your extremely foolish son, chooses misfortune over advantage, even when implored by his well-wishers.

20.
Having disregarded the advice of your well-wishers, you (Dhritarashtra) also follow this one (Duryodhana), who treads a wrong path and is bound by sin (pāpa).

21.
This very evil-minded son of yours, along with his ministers, will instantly cease to exist once he confronts Krishna (kṛṣṇa), whose actions (karma) are unfailing.

I am utterly unable to listen to any words that bring misfortune from this sinful, cruel, evil-minded person who has abandoned righteousness (dharma).

23.
Vaiśampāyana said: Having spoken thus, Bhīṣma, the foremost among the Bhāratas, who was aged, extremely enraged, and whose valor was true, rose from there and departed.
