दुर्योधन उवाच ।
अजानतस्ते राधेय नाभ्यसूयाम्यहं वचः ।
जानासि त्वं जिताञ्शत्रून्गन्धर्वांस्तेजसा मया ॥१॥
1. duryodhana uvāca ,
ajānataste rādheya nābhyasūyāmyahaṁ vacaḥ ,
jānāsi tvaṁ jitāñśatrūngandharvāṁstejasā mayā.
1. duryodhanaḥ uvāca ajānataḥ te rādheya na abhyasūyāmi aham
vacaḥ jānāsi tvam jitān śatrūn gandharvān tejasā mayā
1. Duryodhana said: 'O Rādheya, I do not fault your words, for you are unaware. You know that I conquered the Gandharvas, our enemies, with my prowess.'
आयोधितास्तु गन्धर्वाः सुचिरं सोदरैर्मम ।
मया सह महाबाहो कृतश्चोभयतः क्षयः ॥२॥
2. āyodhitāstu gandharvāḥ suciraṁ sodarairmama ,
mayā saha mahābāho kṛtaścobhayataḥ kṣayaḥ.
2. āyodhitāḥ tu gandharvāḥ suciram sodaraiḥ mama
mayā saha mahābāho kṛtaḥ ca ubhayataḥ kṣayaḥ
2. O mighty-armed one, the Gandharvas were indeed fought against for a very long time by my brothers and me, and there was destruction (kṣaya) on both sides.
मायाधिकास्त्वयुध्यन्त यदा शूरा वियद्गताः ।
तदा नो नसमं युद्धमभवत्सह खेचरैः ॥३॥
3. māyādhikāstvayudhyanta yadā śūrā viyadgatāḥ ,
tadā no nasamaṁ yuddhamabhavatsaha khecaraiḥ.
3. māyādhikāḥ tu ayudhyanta yadā śūrāḥ viyadgatāḥ
tadā naḥ na samam yuddham abhavat saha khecaraiḥ
3. When those heroes, who were superior in illusion (māyā) and had taken to the sky, fought, then our battle with those sky-dwellers (khecara) was not an equal one.
पराजयं च प्राप्ताः स्म रणे बन्धनमेव च ।
सभृत्यामात्यपुत्राश्च सदारधनवाहनाः ।
उच्चैराकाशमार्गेण ह्रियामस्तैः सुदुःखिताः ॥४॥
4. parājayaṁ ca prāptāḥ sma raṇe bandhanameva ca ,
sabhṛtyāmātyaputrāśca sadāradhanavāhanāḥ ,
uccairākāśamārgeṇa hriyāmastaiḥ suduḥkhitāḥ.

eva ca sa-bhṛtya-āmātya-putrāḥ
ca sa-dāra-dhana-vāhanāḥ uccaiḥ
ākāśa-mārgeṇa hriyāmaḥ taiḥ su-duḥkhitāḥ
4. We have suffered defeat and imprisonment in battle. Along with our servants, ministers, sons, wives, wealth, and vehicles, we are being carried away by them, high through the sky, utterly distressed.
अथ नः सैनिकाः केचिदमात्याश्च महारथान् ।
उपगम्याब्रुवन्दीनाः पाण्डवाञ्शरणप्रदान् ॥५॥
5. atha naḥ sainikāḥ kecidamātyāśca mahārathān ,
upagamyābruvandīnāḥ pāṇḍavāñśaraṇapradān.
5. atha naḥ sainikāḥ kecit amātyāḥ ca mahā-rathān
upagamya abruvan dīnāḥ pāṇḍavān śaraṇa-pradān
5. Then some of our distressed soldiers and ministers approached the Pāṇḍavas, those great charioteers who grant refuge, and spoke to them.
एष दुर्योधनो राजा धार्तराष्ट्रः सहानुजः ।
सामात्यदारो ह्रियते गन्धर्वैर्दिवमास्थितैः ॥६॥
6. eṣa duryodhano rājā dhārtarāṣṭraḥ sahānujaḥ ,
sāmātyadāro hriyate gandharvairdivamāsthitaiḥ.
6. eṣa duryodhanaḥ rājā dhārtarāṣṭraḥ saha-anujaḥ
sa-amātya-dāraḥ hriyate gandharvaiḥ divam-āsthitaiḥ
6. This King Duryodhana, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, accompanied by his younger brothers, ministers, and wives, is being carried away by the Gāndharvas who dwell in the heavens.
तं मोक्षयत भद्रं वः सहदारं नराधिपम् ।
परामर्शो मा भविष्यत्कुरुदारेषु सर्वशः ॥७॥
7. taṁ mokṣayata bhadraṁ vaḥ sahadāraṁ narādhipam ,
parāmarśo mā bhaviṣyatkurudāreṣu sarvaśaḥ.
7. tam mokṣayata bhadram vaḥ sa-dāram nara-adhipam
parāmarśaḥ mā bhaviṣyat kuru-dāreṣu sarvaśaḥ
7. Release that king along with his wives! May good fortune be with you. Let there be no outrage whatsoever against the wives of the Kurus.
एवमुक्ते तु धर्मात्मा ज्येष्ठः पाण्डुसुतस्तदा ।
प्रसाद्य सोदरान्सर्वानाज्ञापयत मोक्षणे ॥८॥
8. evamukte tu dharmātmā jyeṣṭhaḥ pāṇḍusutastadā ,
prasādya sodarānsarvānājñāpayata mokṣaṇe.
8. evam ukte tu dharmātmā jyeṣṭhaḥ pāṇḍusutaḥ tadā
prasādya sodarān sarvān ājñāpayata mokṣaṇe
8. When this was said, the eldest son of Pāṇḍu, whose inner nature (dharma) was righteousness, then appeased all his brothers and commanded them to secure the release.
अथागम्य तमुद्देशं पाण्डवाः पुरुषर्षभाः ।
सान्त्वपूर्वमयाचन्त शक्ताः सन्तो महारथाः ॥९॥
9. athāgamya tamuddeśaṁ pāṇḍavāḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ ,
sāntvapūrvamayācanta śaktāḥ santo mahārathāḥ.
9. atha āgamya tam uddeśam pāṇḍavāḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ
sāntvapūrvam ayācanta śaktāḥ santaḥ mahārathāḥ
9. Then, upon reaching that place, the Pāṇḍavas - foremost among men (puruṣa) - though powerful and great charioteers, first tried to conciliate and made a request.
यदा चास्मान्न मुमुचुर्गन्धर्वाः सान्त्विता अपि ।
ततोऽर्जुनश्च भीमश्च यमजौ च बलोत्कटौ ।
मुमुचुः शरवर्षाणि गन्धर्वान्प्रत्यनेकशः ॥१०॥
10. yadā cāsmānna mumucurgandharvāḥ sāntvitā api ,
tato'rjunaśca bhīmaśca yamajau ca balotkaṭau ,
mumucuḥ śaravarṣāṇi gandharvānpratyanekaśaḥ.
10. yadā ca asmān na mumucuḥ gandharvāḥ
sāntvitāḥ api tataḥ arjunaḥ ca bhīmaḥ
ca yamajau ca balotkaṭau mumucuḥ
śaravarṣāṇi gandharvān prati anekaśaḥ
10. And when the Gandharvas did not release us, even though they had been appeased, then Arjuna and Bhīma, as well as the exceedingly powerful twins, discharged many showers of arrows against the Gandharvas.
अथ सर्वे रणं मुक्त्वा प्रयाताः खचरा दिवम् ।
अस्मानेवाभिकर्षन्तो दीनान्मुदितमानसाः ॥११॥
11. atha sarve raṇaṁ muktvā prayātāḥ khacarā divam ,
asmānevābhikarṣanto dīnānmuditamānasāḥ.
11. atha sarve raṇam muktvā prayātāḥ khacarāḥ divam
asmān eva abhikarṣantaḥ dīnān muditamānasāḥ
11. Then all the sky-dwellers (Gandharvas), abandoning the battle, ascended to heaven, their minds joyful, as they pulled us, the helpless ones, along with them.
ततः समन्तात्पश्यामि शरजालेन वेष्टितम् ।
अमानुषाणि चास्त्राणि प्रयुञ्जानं धनंजयम् ॥१२॥
12. tataḥ samantātpaśyāmi śarajālena veṣṭitam ,
amānuṣāṇi cāstrāṇi prayuñjānaṁ dhanaṁjayam.
12. tataḥ samantāt paśyāmi śarajālena veṣṭitam
amānuṣāṇi ca astrāṇi prayuñjānam dhanaṃjayam
12. Then, from all sides, I see Dhananjaya (Arjuna), enveloped by a shower of arrows and employing divine weapons.
समावृता दिशो दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवेन शितैः शरैः ।
धनंजयसखात्मानं दर्शयामास वै तदा ॥१३॥
13. samāvṛtā diśo dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavena śitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
dhanaṁjayasakhātmānaṁ darśayāmāsa vai tadā.
13. samāvṛtāḥ diśaḥ dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavena śitaiḥ śaraiḥ
dhanaṃjayasakhaḥ ātmānam darśayāmāsa vai tadā
13. Then, having seen the directions enveloped by the sharp arrows of the Pandava (Arjuna), the friend of Dhananjaya revealed his true nature (ātman).
चित्रसेनः पाण्डवेन समाश्लिष्य परंतपः ।
कुशलं परिपप्रच्छ तैः पृष्टश्चाप्यनामयम् ॥१४॥
14. citrasenaḥ pāṇḍavena samāśliṣya paraṁtapaḥ ,
kuśalaṁ paripapraccha taiḥ pṛṣṭaścāpyanāmayam.
14. citrasenaḥ pāṇḍavena samāśliṣya paraṃtapaḥ
kuśalam paripapraccha taiḥ pṛṣṭaḥ ca api anāmayam
14. Citrasena, the tormentor of foes, having embraced Arjuna, inquired about his well-being. And when he was also asked by them, he likewise inquired about their health.
ते समेत्य तथान्योन्यं संनाहान्विप्रमुच्य च ।
एकीभूतास्ततो वीरा गन्धर्वाः सह पाण्डवैः ।
अपूजयेतामन्योन्यं चित्रसेनधनंजयौ ॥१५॥
15. te sametya tathānyonyaṁ saṁnāhānvipramucya ca ,
ekībhūtāstato vīrā gandharvāḥ saha pāṇḍavaiḥ ,
apūjayetāmanyonyaṁ citrasenadhanaṁjayau.
15. te sametya tathā anyonyam saṃnāhān
vipramucya ca ekībhūtāḥ tataḥ vīrāḥ
gandharvāḥ saha pāṇḍavaiḥ apūjayetām
anyonyam citrasenadhanaṃjayau
15. They, the Gandharva heroes and the Pandavas, having met and laid aside their armors, thus became united. Then, Citrasena and Dhananjaya mutually honored each other.
