यथा स भगवान्व्यासः कृष्णद्वैपायनोऽब्रवीत् ।
तथैव सहिताः सर्वे समाजग्मुर्महीक्षितः ॥१॥

1. Sanjaya said: Exactly as the revered Lord Vyasa (Kṛṣṇadvaipāyana) had foretold, all the kings indeed assembled.
मघाविषयगः सोमस्तद्दिनं प्रत्यपद्यत ।
दीप्यमानाश्च संपेतुर्दिवि सप्त महाग्रहाः ॥२॥
2. maghāviṣayagaḥ somastaddinaṁ pratyapadyata ,
dīpyamānāśca saṁpeturdivi sapta mahāgrahāḥ.

dīpyamānāḥ ca sampetuḥ divi sapta mahāgrahāḥ

2. On that day, the Moon entered the constellation of Maghā. And seven great planets, blazing brightly, converged in the sky.
द्विधाभूत इवादित्य उदये प्रत्यदृश्यत ।
ज्वलन्त्या शिखया भूयो भानुमानुदितो दिवि ॥३॥
3. dvidhābhūta ivāditya udaye pratyadṛśyata ,
jvalantyā śikhayā bhūyo bhānumānudito divi.

3. At sunrise, the sun appeared as if split in two. Then, the radiant one rose again in the sky with a burning flame.
ववाशिरे च दीप्तायां दिशि गोमायुवायसाः ।
लिप्समानाः शरीराणि मांसशोणितभोजनाः ॥४॥
4. vavāśire ca dīptāyāṁ diśi gomāyuvāyasāḥ ,
lipsamānāḥ śarīrāṇi māṁsaśoṇitabhojanāḥ.

4. In the blazing direction, jackals and crows cried out, eager for bodies, as they subsisted on flesh and blood.
अहन्यहनि पार्थानां वृद्धः कुरुपितामहः ।
भरद्वाजात्मजश्चैव प्रातरुत्थाय संयतौ ॥५॥
5. ahanyahani pārthānāṁ vṛddhaḥ kurupitāmahaḥ ,
bharadvājātmajaścaiva prātarutthāya saṁyatau.

5. Day after day, both the venerable grandfather of the Kurus (Bhīṣma) and the son of Bharadvāja (Droṇa), having risen in the morning, restrained themselves for the sake of the Pārthas.
जयोऽस्तु पाण्डुपुत्राणामित्यूचतुररिंदमौ ।
युयुधाते तवार्थाय यथा स समयः कृतः ॥६॥
6. jayo'stu pāṇḍuputrāṇāmityūcaturariṁdamau ,
yuyudhāte tavārthāya yathā sa samayaḥ kṛtaḥ.
6. jayaḥ astu pāṇḍuputrāṇām iti ūcatuḥ ariṃdamau
yuyudhāte tava arthāya yathā saḥ samayaḥ kṛtaḥ
6. ariṃdamau ūcatuḥ pāṇḍuputrāṇām jayaḥ astu iti
saḥ samayaḥ yathā kṛtaḥ tava arthāya yuyudhāte
6. “May victory be with the sons of Pāṇḍu!” So spoke the two subduers of foes (Bhīṣma and Droṇa). They fought on your behalf, just as that agreement had been made.
सर्वधर्मविशेषज्ञः पिता देवव्रतस्तव ।
समानीय महीपालानिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥७॥
7. sarvadharmaviśeṣajñaḥ pitā devavratastava ,
samānīya mahīpālānidaṁ vacanamabravīt.
7. sarvadharmaviśeṣajñaḥ pitā devavrataḥ tava
samānīya mahīpālān idam vacanam abravīt
7. tava pitā devavrataḥ sarvadharmaviśeṣajñaḥ

7. Your father Devavrata, an expert in all aspects of natural law (dharma), gathered the kings and spoke these words.
इदं वः क्षत्रिया द्वारं स्वर्गायापावृतं महत् ।
गच्छध्वं तेन शक्रस्य ब्रह्मणश्च सलोकताम् ॥८॥
8. idaṁ vaḥ kṣatriyā dvāraṁ svargāyāpāvṛtaṁ mahat ,
gacchadhvaṁ tena śakrasya brahmaṇaśca salokatām.
8. idam vaḥ kṣatriyāḥ dvāram svargāya apāvṛtam mahat
| gacchadhvam tena śakrasya brahmaṇaḥ ca salokatām
8. he kṣatriyāḥ,
vaḥ idam mahat dvāram svargāya apāvṛtam.
tena śakrasya brahmaṇaḥ ca salokatām gacchadhvam.
8. O warriors (kṣatriya), this great door to heaven is open for you. Go through it and attain the same world as Indra (Śakra) and Brahma.
एष वः शाश्वतः पन्थाः पूर्वैः पूर्वतरैर्गतः ।
संभावयत चात्मानमव्यग्रमनसो युधि ॥९॥
9. eṣa vaḥ śāśvataḥ panthāḥ pūrvaiḥ pūrvatarairgataḥ ,
saṁbhāvayata cātmānamavyagramanaso yudhi.
9. eṣaḥ vaḥ śāśvataḥ panthāḥ pūrvaiḥ pūrvataraiḥ gataḥ
| saṃbhāvayata ca ātmanam avyagramanasaḥ yudhi
9. vaḥ eṣaḥ śāśvataḥ panthāḥ pūrvaiḥ pūrvataraiḥ
gataḥ ca yudhi avyagramanasaḥ ātmanam saṃbhāvayata
9. This is your eternal path, trodden by former generations and even earlier ones. Therefore, manifest yourselves in battle with unwavering minds.
नाभागो हि ययातिश्च मान्धाता नहुषो नृगः ।
संसिद्धाः परमं स्थानं गताः कर्मभिरीदृशैः ॥१०॥
10. nābhāgo hi yayātiśca māndhātā nahuṣo nṛgaḥ ,
saṁsiddhāḥ paramaṁ sthānaṁ gatāḥ karmabhirīdṛśaiḥ.
10. nābhāgaḥ hi yayātiḥ ca māndhātā nahuṣaḥ nṛgaḥ |
saṃsiddhāḥ paramam sthānam gatāḥ karmabhiḥ īdṛśaiḥ
10. hi nābhāgaḥ ca yayātiḥ māndhātā nahuṣaḥ nṛgaḥ
īdṛśaiḥ karmabhiḥ saṃsiddhāḥ paramam sthānam gatāḥ
10. Indeed, Nābhāga, Yayāti, Māndhātā, Nahuṣa, and Nṛga attained the supreme state by such actions (karma).
अधर्मः क्षत्रियस्यैष यद्व्याधिमरणं गृहे ।
यदाजौ निधनं याति सोऽस्य धर्मः सनातनः ॥११॥
11. adharmaḥ kṣatriyasyaiṣa yadvyādhimaraṇaṁ gṛhe ,
yadājau nidhanaṁ yāti so'sya dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ.
11. adharmaḥ kṣatriyasya eṣa yat vyādhimaraṇaṃ gṛhe
yadā ājau nidhanaṃ yāti saḥ asya dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ
11. eṣaḥ yat gṛhe vyādhimaraṇaṃ kṣatriyasya adharmaḥ yadā ājau nidhanaṃ yāti,
saḥ asya sanātanaḥ dharmaḥ.
11. For a kshatriya, it is an act against his natural law (adharma) to die of disease at home. When he attains death on the battlefield, that is his eternal natural law (dharma).
एवमुक्ता महीपाला भीष्मेण भरतर्षभ ।
निर्ययुः स्वान्यनीकानि शोभयन्तो रथोत्तमैः ॥१२॥
12. evamuktā mahīpālā bhīṣmeṇa bharatarṣabha ,
niryayuḥ svānyanīkāni śobhayanto rathottamaiḥ.
12. evam uktāḥ mahīpālāḥ bhīṣmeṇa bharatarṣabha
niryayuḥ svāni anīkāni śobhayantaḥ rathottamaiḥ
12. bharatarṣabha,
evam bhīṣmeṇa uktāḥ mahīpālāḥ rathottamaiḥ svāni anīkāni śobhayantaḥ niryayuḥ.
12. O best of Bharatas, thus addressed by Bhishma, the kings departed, making their own armies splendid with their excellent chariots.
स तु वैकर्तनः कर्णः सामात्यः सह बन्धुभिः ।
न्यासितः समरे शस्त्रं भीष्मेण भरतर्षभ ॥१३॥
13. sa tu vaikartanaḥ karṇaḥ sāmātyaḥ saha bandhubhiḥ ,
nyāsitaḥ samare śastraṁ bhīṣmeṇa bharatarṣabha.
13. saḥ tu vaikartanaḥ karṇaḥ sa-amātyaḥ saha bandhubhiḥ
nyāsitaḥ samare śastraṃ bhīṣmeṇa bharatarṣabha
13. bharatarṣabha,
tu saḥ vaikartanaḥ karṇaḥ sa-amātyaḥ saha bandhubhiḥ bhīṣmeṇa samare śastraṃ nyāsitaḥ.
13. O best of Bharatas, that Karna, the son of Vikartana, along with his ministers and kinsmen, had his weapons laid down in battle by Bhishma.
अपेतकर्णाः पुत्रास्ते राजानश्चैव तावकाः ।
निर्ययुः सिंहनादेन नादयन्तो दिशो दश ॥१४॥
14. apetakarṇāḥ putrāste rājānaścaiva tāvakāḥ ,
niryayuḥ siṁhanādena nādayanto diśo daśa.
14. apeta-karṇāḥ putrāḥ te rājānaḥ ca eva tāvakāḥ
niryayuḥ siṃhanādena nādayantaḥ diśaḥ daśa
14. te tāvakāḥ putrāḥ ca eva rājānaḥ apeta-karṇāḥ,
siṃhanādena daśa diśaḥ nādayantaḥ niryayuḥ.
14. Your sons and your kings, now without Karna, marched forth with a lion's roar, filling all ten directions with sound.
श्वेतैश्छत्रैः पताकाभिर्ध्वजवारणवाजिभिः ।
तान्यनीकान्यशोभन्त रथैरथ पदातिभिः ॥१५॥
15. śvetaiśchatraiḥ patākābhirdhvajavāraṇavājibhiḥ ,
tānyanīkānyaśobhanta rathairatha padātibhiḥ.
15. śvetaiḥ chatraiḥ patākābhiḥ dhvajavāraṇavājibhiḥ
tāni anīkāni aśobhanta rathaiḥ atha padātibhiḥ
15. tāni anīkāni śvetaiḥ chatraiḥ patākābhiḥ
dhvajavāraṇavājibhiḥ rathaiḥ atha padātibhiḥ aśobhanta
15. Those armies appeared splendid with white umbrellas, banners, flags, elephants, horses, chariots, and foot soldiers.
भेरीपणवशब्दैश्च पटहानां च निस्वनैः ।
रथनेमिनिनादैश्च बभूवाकुलिता मही ॥१६॥
16. bherīpaṇavaśabdaiśca paṭahānāṁ ca nisvanaiḥ ,
rathanemininādaiśca babhūvākulitā mahī.
16. bherīpaṇavaśabdaiḥ ca paṭahānām ca nisvanaiḥ
rathaneminimādaiḥ ca babhūva ākulitā mahī
16. mahī bherīpaṇavaśabdaiḥ ca paṭahānām ca
nisvanaiḥ ca rathaneminimādaiḥ ākulitā babhūva
16. The earth became agitated and filled with the sounds of large drums (bherī) and small drums (paṇava), the noises of war-drums (paṭaha), and the roars of chariot wheels.
काञ्चनाङ्गदकेयूरैः कार्मुकैश्च महारथाः ।
भ्राजमाना व्यदृश्यन्त जङ्गमाः पर्वता इव ॥१७॥
17. kāñcanāṅgadakeyūraiḥ kārmukaiśca mahārathāḥ ,
bhrājamānā vyadṛśyanta jaṅgamāḥ parvatā iva.

bhrājamānāḥ vyadṛśyanta jaṅgamāḥ parvatāḥ iva

17. Adorned with golden armlets and bracelets and carrying bows, the great chariot warriors shone brilliantly, appearing like moving mountains.
तालेन महता भीष्मः पञ्चतारेण केतुना ।
विमलादित्यसंकाशस्तस्थौ कुरुचमूपतिः ॥१८॥
18. tālena mahatā bhīṣmaḥ pañcatāreṇa ketunā ,
vimalādityasaṁkāśastasthau kurucamūpatiḥ.

18. Bhishma, the commander of the Kuru army, stood shining like the spotless sun, distinguished by his great palm tree banner (ketu) marked with five stars.
ये त्वदीया महेष्वासा राजानो भरतर्षभ ।
अवर्तन्त यथादेशं राजञ्शांतनवस्य ते ॥१९॥
19. ye tvadīyā maheṣvāsā rājāno bharatarṣabha ,
avartanta yathādeśaṁ rājañśāṁtanavasya te.
19. ye tvadīyāḥ maheṣvāsāḥ rājānaḥ bharatarṣabha
avartanta yathādeśam rājan śāṃtanavasya te
19. bharatarṣabha rājan ye tvadīyāḥ maheṣvāsāḥ

19. O best among the Bharatas, O King, those great archer kings of yours were positioned according to the command of the son of Shantanu (śāṃtanava).
स तु गोवासनः शैब्यः सहितः सर्वराजभिः ।
ययौ मातङ्गराजेन राजार्हेण पताकिना ।
पद्मवर्णस्त्वनीकानां सर्वेषामग्रतः स्थितः ॥२०॥
20. sa tu govāsanaḥ śaibyaḥ sahitaḥ sarvarājabhiḥ ,
yayau mātaṅgarājena rājārheṇa patākinā ,
padmavarṇastvanīkānāṁ sarveṣāmagrataḥ sthitaḥ.
20. saḥ tu govāsanaḥ śaibyaḥ sahitaḥ
sarvarājabhiḥ yayau mātaṅgarājena
rājārheṇa patākinā padmavarṇaḥ tu
anīkānām sarveṣām agrataḥ sthitaḥ
20. saḥ tu govāsanaḥ śaibyaḥ sarvarājabhiḥ sahitaḥ rājārheṇa patākinā mātaṅgarājena yayau.
padmavarṇaḥ tu sarveṣām anīkānām agrataḥ sthitaḥ.
20. Indeed, Govāsana, the Śaibya king, accompanied by all the other kings, proceeded with a royal (rājārha) elephant bearing a banner (patākin). Furthermore, Padmavarṇa stood at the forefront of all the armies.
अश्वत्थामा ययौ यत्तः सिंहलाङ्गूलकेतनः ।
श्रुतायुश्चित्रसेनश्च पुरुमित्रो विविंशतिः ॥२१॥
21. aśvatthāmā yayau yattaḥ siṁhalāṅgūlaketanaḥ ,
śrutāyuścitrasenaśca purumitro viviṁśatiḥ.
21. aśvatthāmā yayau yattaḥ siṃhalāṅgūlaketanaḥ
śrutāyuḥ citrasenaḥ ca purumitraḥ viviṃśatiḥ
21. yattaḥ aśvatthāmā siṃhalāṅgūlaketanaḥ yayau.
śrutāyuḥ ca citrasenaḥ purumitraḥ viviṃśatiḥ (api yayuḥ).
21. Ashwatthama, being prepared, proceeded, bearing a banner (ketana) with a lion's tail (siṃhalāṅgūla). Shrutayu, Chitrasena, Purumitra, and Vivimshati also (proceeded).
शल्यो भूरिश्रवाश्चैव विकर्णश्च महारथः ।
एते सप्त महेष्वासा द्रोणपुत्रपुरोगमाः ।
स्यन्दनैर्वरवर्णाभैर्भीष्मस्यासन्पुरःसराः ॥२२॥
22. śalyo bhūriśravāścaiva vikarṇaśca mahārathaḥ ,
ete sapta maheṣvāsā droṇaputrapurogamāḥ ,
syandanairvaravarṇābhairbhīṣmasyāsanpuraḥsarāḥ.
22. śalyaḥ bhūriśravāḥ ca eva vikarṇaḥ
ca mahārathaḥ ete sapta maheṣvāsāḥ
droṇaputrapurogamāḥ syandanaiḥ
varavarṇābhāiḥ bhīṣmasya āsan puraḥsarāḥ

bhūriśravāḥ ca eva vikarṇaḥ ca (yaḥ) mahārathaḥ - ete droṇaputrapurogamāḥ sapta maheṣvāsāḥ varavarṇābhāiḥ syandanaiḥ bhīṣmasya puraḥsarāḥ āsan.
22. Shalya, Bhurishravas, and Vikarna, a great chariot-warrior—these seven great archers, with Drona's son (Ashwatthama) as their leader, were the vanguard of Bhishma, moving in their splendidly adorned chariots.
तेषामपि महोत्सेधाः शोभयन्तो रथोत्तमान् ।
भ्राजमाना व्यदृश्यन्त जाम्बूनदमया ध्वजाः ॥२३॥
23. teṣāmapi mahotsedhāḥ śobhayanto rathottamān ,
bhrājamānā vyadṛśyanta jāmbūnadamayā dhvajāḥ.
23. teṣām api mahotsedhāḥ śobhayantaḥ rathottamān
bhrājamānāḥ vyadṛśyanta jāmbūnadamayāḥ dhvajāḥ
23. api teṣām mahotsedhāḥ bhrājamānāḥ jāmbūnadamayāḥ

23. Their extremely lofty, shining, golden banners, which adorned the finest chariots, were also seen.
जाम्बूनदमयी वेदिः कमण्डलुविभूषिता ।
केतुराचार्यमुख्यस्य द्रोणस्य धनुषा सह ॥२४॥
24. jāmbūnadamayī vediḥ kamaṇḍaluvibhūṣitā ,
keturācāryamukhyasya droṇasya dhanuṣā saha.

24. The banner (ketu) of Drona, the chief preceptor (ācārya), displayed a golden altar adorned with a water pot, along with a bow.
अनेकशतसाहस्रमनीकमनुकर्षतः ।
महान्दुर्योधनस्यासीन्नागो मणिमयो ध्वजः ॥२५॥
25. anekaśatasāhasramanīkamanukarṣataḥ ,
mahānduryodhanasyāsīnnāgo maṇimayo dhvajaḥ.

duryodhanasya āsīt nāgaḥ maṇimayaḥ dhvajaḥ

25. Duryodhana, who led an army (anīka) of many hundreds of thousands, had a great jeweled elephant (nāga) as his banner (dhvaja).
तस्य पौरवकालिङ्गौ काम्बोजश्च सुदक्षिणः ।
क्षेमधन्वा सुमित्रश्च तस्थुः प्रमुखतो रथाः ॥२६॥
26. tasya pauravakāliṅgau kāmbojaśca sudakṣiṇaḥ ,
kṣemadhanvā sumitraśca tasthuḥ pramukhato rathāḥ.

26. In front of him (Duryodhana), Paurava and Kalinga, along with Kamboja and Sudakshina, and Kshemadhanva and Sumitra, stood with their chariots (ratha).
स्यन्दनेन महार्हेण केतुना वृषभेण च ।
प्रकर्षन्निव सेनाग्रं मागधश्च नृपो ययौ ॥२७॥
27. syandanena mahārheṇa ketunā vṛṣabheṇa ca ,
prakarṣanniva senāgraṁ māgadhaśca nṛpo yayau.

27. The king of Magadha advanced, as if drawing forth the vanguard of his army, mounted on his magnificent chariot and bearing a banner marked with a bull.
तदङ्गपतिना गुप्तं कृपेण च महात्मना ।
शारदाभ्रचयप्रख्यं प्राच्यानामभवद्बलम् ॥२८॥
28. tadaṅgapatinā guptaṁ kṛpeṇa ca mahātmanā ,
śāradābhracayaprakhyaṁ prācyānāmabhavadbalam.
28. tat-aṅgapatina guptam kṛpeṇa ca mahātmanā
śāradābhra-caya-prakhyam prācyānām abhavat balam
28. tat-aṅgapatina ca mahātmanā kṛpeṇa guptam

28. The army of the Easterners, protected by the lord of Aṅga and the great-souled Kṛpa, appeared like a mass of autumn clouds.
अनीकप्रमुखे तिष्ठन्वराहेण महायशाः ।
शुशुभे केतुमुख्येन राजतेन जयद्रथः ॥२९॥
29. anīkapramukhe tiṣṭhanvarāheṇa mahāyaśāḥ ,

29. Jayadratha, highly renowned, shone splendidly as he stood at the forefront of the army, (marked) by his principal, silver-colored banner bearing a boar emblem.
शतं रथसहस्राणां तस्यासन्वशवर्तिनः ।
अष्टौ नागसहस्राणि सादिनामयुतानि षट् ॥३०॥
30. śataṁ rathasahasrāṇāṁ tasyāsanvaśavartinaḥ ,
aṣṭau nāgasahasrāṇi sādināmayutāni ṣaṭ.

30. One hundred thousand chariots were under his command. There were also eight thousand elephants and sixty thousand horsemen.
तत्सिन्धुपतिना राजन्पालितं ध्वजिनीमुखम् ।
अनन्तरथनागाश्वमशोभत महद्बलम् ॥३१॥
31. tatsindhupatinā rājanpālitaṁ dhvajinīmukham ,
anantarathanāgāśvamaśobhata mahadbalam.

ananta-ratha-nāga-aśvam aśobhata mahat balam

31. O King, that mighty army, commanded by the lord of Sindhu, and adorned with countless chariots, elephants, and horses, looked splendid.
षष्ट्या रथसहस्रैस्तु नागानामयुतेन च ।
पतिः सर्वकलिङ्गानां ययौ केतुमता सह ॥३२॥
32. ṣaṣṭyā rathasahasraistu nāgānāmayutena ca ,
patiḥ sarvakaliṅgānāṁ yayau ketumatā saha.
32. ṣaṣṭyā ratha-sahasraiḥ tu nāgānām ayutena ca
patiḥ sarva-kalingānām yayau ketumatā saha
32. sarva-kalingānām patiḥ ketumatā saha,
ṣaṣṭyā ratha-sahasraiḥ ca nāgānām ayutena tu yayau.
32. The lord of all Kalingas, accompanied by Ketumat, proceeded with sixty thousand chariots and ten thousand elephants.
तस्य पर्वतसंकाशा व्यरोचन्त महागजाः ।
यन्त्रतोमरतूणीरैः पताकाभिश्च शोभिताः ॥३३॥
33. tasya parvatasaṁkāśā vyarocanta mahāgajāḥ ,
yantratomaratūṇīraiḥ patākābhiśca śobhitāḥ.
33. tasya parvata-saṃkāśāḥ vyarocanta mahā-gajāḥ
yantra-tomara-tūṇīraiḥ patākābhiḥ ca śobhitāḥ
33. tasya mahā-gajāḥ,
parvata-saṃkāśāḥ,

33. His great elephants, resembling mountains, shone brightly, adorned with mechanical devices, javelins, quivers, and banners.
शुशुभे केतुमुख्येन पादपेन कलिङ्गपः ।
श्वेतच्छत्रेण निष्केण चामरव्यजनेन च ॥३४॥
34. śuśubhe ketumukhyena pādapena kaliṅgapaḥ ,
śvetacchatreṇa niṣkeṇa cāmaravyajanena ca.
34. śuśubhe ketu-mukhyena pādapena kalingapaḥ
śveta-cchatreṇa niṣkeṇa cāmara-vyajanena ca

34. The lord of Kalingas shone splendidly, distinguished by his principal banner, a tall standard, a white umbrella, a golden necklace, and a yak-tail whisk.
केतुमानपि मातङ्गं विचित्रपरमाङ्कुशम् ।
आस्थितः समरे राजन्मेघस्थ इव भानुमान् ॥३५॥
35. ketumānapi mātaṅgaṁ vicitraparamāṅkuśam ,
āsthitaḥ samare rājanmeghastha iva bhānumān.

35. O King, Ketumān, also mounted on an elephant equipped with a splendid, excellent goad, appeared in battle like the sun residing in a cloud.
तेजसा दीप्यमानस्तु वारणोत्तममास्थितः ।
भगदत्तो ययौ राजा यथा वज्रधरस्तथा ॥३६॥
36. tejasā dīpyamānastu vāraṇottamamāsthitaḥ ,
bhagadatto yayau rājā yathā vajradharastathā.

36. King Bhagadatta, shining with brilliance and mounted on an excellent elephant, proceeded just as the wielder of the thunderbolt (Indra) does.
गजस्कन्धगतावास्तां भगदत्तेन संमितौ ।
विन्दानुविन्दावावन्त्यौ केतुमन्तमनुव्रतौ ॥३७॥
37. gajaskandhagatāvāstāṁ bhagadattena saṁmitau ,
vindānuvindāvāvantyau ketumantamanuvratau.

37. The two Avanti princes, Vind and Anuvind, who were faithful followers of Ketumān, were situated on an elephant's shoulder, accompanied by Bhagadatta.
स रथानीकवान्व्यूहो हस्त्यङ्गोत्तमशीर्षवान् ।
वाजिपक्षः पतन्नुग्रः प्राहरत्सर्वतोमुखः ॥३८॥
38. sa rathānīkavānvyūho hastyaṅgottamaśīrṣavān ,
vājipakṣaḥ patannugraḥ prāharatsarvatomukhaḥ.

38. That battle formation (vyūha), having divisions of chariots, its excellent head formed by elephant corps, and wings of cavalry, charged fiercely, assailing from every direction.
द्रोणेन विहितो राजन्राज्ञा शांतनवेन च ।
तथैवाचार्यपुत्रेण बाह्लीकेन कृपेण च ॥३९॥
39. droṇena vihito rājanrājñā śāṁtanavena ca ,
tathaivācāryaputreṇa bāhlīkena kṛpeṇa ca.

39. O King, he was appointed by Drona, and by Bhishma (the son of Shantanu), and likewise by Ashvatthama (the teacher's son), by Bahlika, and by Kripa.
