वैशंपायन उवाच ।
अदृष्ट्वा तु नृपः पुत्रान्दर्शनं प्रतिलब्धवान् ।
ऋषिप्रसादात्पुत्राणां स्वरूपाणां कुरूद्वह ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
adṛṣṭvā tu nṛpaḥ putrāndarśanaṁ pratilabdhavān ,
ṛṣiprasādātputrāṇāṁ svarūpāṇāṁ kurūdvaha.
1. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca adṛṣṭvā tu nṛpaḥ putrān darśanam
pratilabdhavān ṛṣiprasādāt putrāṇām svarūpāṇām kurūdvaha
1. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca he kurūdvaha nṛpaḥ tu putrān adṛṣṭvā
api ṛṣiprasādāt svarūpāṇām putrāṇām darśanam pratilabdhavān
1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: O best of Kurus (Kurūdvaha), the king, without having seen his sons, obtained a vision of them in their true forms, by the grace of the sage.
स राजा राजधर्मांश्च ब्रह्मोपनिषदं तथा ।
अवाप्तवान्नरश्रेष्ठो बुद्धिनिश्चयमेव च ॥२॥
2. sa rājā rājadharmāṁśca brahmopaniṣadaṁ tathā ,
avāptavānnaraśreṣṭho buddhiniścayameva ca.
2. saḥ rājā rājadharmān ca brahma upaniṣadam tathā
avāptavān naraśreṣṭhaḥ buddhiniscayam eva ca
2. saḥ rājā naraśreṣṭhaḥ rājadharmān ca tathā brahma
upaniṣadam ca eva ca buddhiniscayam avāptavān
2. That king, the best among men, obtained the royal duties (rājadharma), the secret knowledge of brahman (brahmopaniṣad), and also firm resolve of intellect (buddhiniscaya).
विदुरश्च महाप्राज्ञो ययौ सिद्धिं तपोबलात् ।
धृतराष्ट्रः समासाद्य व्यासं चापि तपस्विनम् ॥३॥
3. viduraśca mahāprājño yayau siddhiṁ tapobalāt ,
dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ samāsādya vyāsaṁ cāpi tapasvinam.
3. viduraḥ ca mahāprājñaḥ yayau siddhim tapobalāt
dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ samāsādya vyāsam ca api tapasvinam
3. viduraḥ ca mahāprājñaḥ tapobalāt siddhim yayau
dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ api tapasvinam vyāsam samāsādya
3. The greatly wise Vidura attained spiritual perfection (siddhi) by the power of his asceticism (tapas). Dhritarashtra also attained it, having approached the ascetic Vyasa.
जनमेजय उवाच ।
ममापि वरदो व्यासो दर्शयेत्पितरं यदि ।
तद्रूपवेषवयसं श्रद्दध्यां सर्वमेव ते ॥४॥
4. janamejaya uvāca ,
mamāpi varado vyāso darśayetpitaraṁ yadi ,
tadrūpaveṣavayasaṁ śraddadhyāṁ sarvameva te.
4. janamejaya uvāca mama api varadaḥ vyāsaḥ darśayet
pitaram yadi tatrūpaveṣavayasaṃ śraddadhyām sarvam eva te
4. janamejaya uvāca yadi varadaḥ vyāsaḥ mama pitaram api
darśayet tatrūpaveṣavayasaṃ te sarvam eva śraddadhyām
4. Janamejaya said: 'If the boon-bestowing (varada) Vyasa would show my father to me, I would then fully believe all your words concerning his form, dress, and age.'
प्रियं मे स्यात्कृतार्थश्च स्यामहं कृतनिश्चयः ।
प्रसादादृषिपुत्रस्य मम कामः समृध्यताम् ॥५॥
5. priyaṁ me syātkṛtārthaśca syāmahaṁ kṛtaniścayaḥ ,
prasādādṛṣiputrasya mama kāmaḥ samṛdhyatām.
5. priyam me syāt kṛtārthaḥ ca syām aham kṛtaniścayaḥ
prasādāt ṛṣiputrasya mama kāmaḥ samṛdhyatām
5. etat me priyam syāt aham ca kṛtārthaḥ kṛtaniścayaḥ
syām ṛṣiputrasya prasādāt mama kāmaḥ samṛdhyatām
5. That would be pleasing to me, and I would be fulfilled and resolute. May my desire be accomplished by the grace of the sage's son.
सूत उवाच ।
इत्युक्तवचने तस्मिन्नृपे व्यासः प्रतापवान् ।
प्रसादमकरोद्धीमानानयच्च परिक्षितम् ॥६॥
6. sūta uvāca ,
ityuktavacane tasminnṛpe vyāsaḥ pratāpavān ,
prasādamakaroddhīmānānayacca parikṣitam.
6. sūtaḥ uvāca iti uktavacane tasmin nṛpe vyāsaḥ
pratāpavān prasādam akarot dhīmān ānayat ca parikṣitam
6. sūtaḥ uvāca tasmin nṛpe iti uktavacane pratāpavān
dhīmān vyāsaḥ prasādam akarot ca parikṣitam ānayat
6. Suta said: 'When the king had spoken these words, the glorious and wise Vyasa granted his favor and brought Parikshit.'
ततस्तद्रूपवयसमागतं नृपतिं दिवः ।
श्रीमन्तं पितरं राजा ददर्श जनमेजयः ॥७॥
7. tatastadrūpavayasamāgataṁ nṛpatiṁ divaḥ ,
śrīmantaṁ pitaraṁ rājā dadarśa janamejayaḥ.
7. tataḥ janamejayaḥ rājā divaḥ āgatam
tad-rūpa-vayasam śrīmantam pitaram dadarśa
7. Then King Janamejaya saw his glorious father, who had descended from heaven and appeared in his former form and age.
शमीकं च महात्मानं पुत्रं तं चास्य शृङ्गिणम् ।
अमात्या ये बभूवुश्च राज्ञस्तांश्च ददर्श ह ॥८॥
8. śamīkaṁ ca mahātmānaṁ putraṁ taṁ cāsya śṛṅgiṇam ,
amātyā ye babhūvuśca rājñastāṁśca dadarśa ha.
8. ca mahātmānam śamīkam ca asya tam putram śṛṅgiṇam
ca ye rājñaḥ amātyāḥ babhūvuḥ tān ca ha dadarśa
8. He also saw the noble (mahātman) Shamika and his son Shringin, and indeed, those ministers who had served the king.
ततः सोऽवभृथे राजा मुदितो जनमेजयः ।
पितरं स्नापयामास स्वयं सस्नौ च पार्थिवः ॥९॥
9. tataḥ so'vabhṛthe rājā mudito janamejayaḥ ,
pitaraṁ snāpayāmāsa svayaṁ sasnau ca pārthivaḥ.
9. tataḥ muditaḥ janamejayaḥ rājā avabhṛthe
pitaram snāpayāmāsa ca svayam pārthivaḥ sasnau
9. Then, the joyful King Janamejaya performed the concluding purification bath (avabhṛtha) for his father, and the king himself also bathed.
स्नात्वा च भरतश्रेष्ठः सोऽऽस्तीकमिदमब्रवीत् ।
यायावरकुलोत्पन्नं जरत्कारुसुतं तदा ॥१०॥
10. snātvā ca bharataśreṣṭhaḥ so''stīkamidamabravīt ,
yāyāvarakulotpannaṁ jaratkārusutaṁ tadā.
10. ca bharata-śreṣṭhaḥ saḥ snātvā tadā yāyāvara-kulotpannam
jaratkāru-sutam idam āstīkam abravīt
10. And having bathed, that best of Bharatas then said this to Astika, who was born in the Yāyāvara lineage and was the son of Jaratkaru.
आस्तीक विविधाश्चर्यो यज्ञोऽयमिति मे मतिः ।
यदद्यायं पिता प्राप्तो मम शोकप्रणाशनः ॥११॥
11. āstīka vividhāścaryo yajño'yamiti me matiḥ ,
yadadyāyaṁ pitā prāpto mama śokapraṇāśanaḥ.
11. āstīka vividhāścaryaḥ yajñaḥ ayam iti me matiḥ
yat adya ayam pitā prāptaḥ mama śokapraṇāśanaḥ
11. āstīka me matiḥ iti ayam yajñaḥ vividhāścaryaḥ
yat adya ayam pitā mama śokapraṇāśanaḥ prāptaḥ
11. O Āstīka, it is my opinion that this Vedic ritual (yajña) is full of various wonders, because today my father, the dispeller of my sorrow, has returned.
आस्तीक उवाच ।
ऋषिर्द्वैपायनो यत्र पुराणस्तपसो निधिः ।
यज्ञे कुरुकुलश्रेष्ठ तस्य लोकावुभौ जितौ ॥१२॥
12. āstīka uvāca ,
ṛṣirdvaipāyano yatra purāṇastapaso nidhiḥ ,
yajñe kurukulaśreṣṭha tasya lokāvubhau jitau.
12. āstīka uvāca ṛṣiḥ dvaipāyanaḥ yatra purāṇaḥ tapasaḥ
nidhiḥ yajñe kurukulaśreṣṭha tasya lokau ubhau jitau
12. āstīka uvāca kurukulaśreṣṭha yatra purāṇaḥ ṛṣiḥ
dvaipāyanaḥ tapasaḥ nidhiḥ yajñe tasya ubhau lokau jitau
12. Āstīka said: O best of the Kuru lineage (kurukulaśreṣṭha), where the ancient sage Dvaipāyana, who is a storehouse of spiritual fervor (tapas), is present at this Vedic ritual (yajña), both his worlds are indeed conquered.
श्रुतं विचित्रमाख्यानं त्वया पाण्डवनन्दन ।
सर्पाश्च भस्मसान्नीता गताश्च पदवीं पितुः ॥१३॥
13. śrutaṁ vicitramākhyānaṁ tvayā pāṇḍavanandana ,
sarpāśca bhasmasānnītā gatāśca padavīṁ pituḥ.
13. śrutam vicitram ākhyānam tvayā pāṇḍavanandana
sarpāḥ ca bhasmasāt nītāḥ gatāḥ ca padavīm pituḥ
13. pāṇḍavanandana vicitram ākhyānam tvayā śrutam ca
sarpāḥ bhasmasāt nītāḥ ca pituḥ padavīm gatāḥ
13. O scion of the Pāṇḍavas (pāṇḍavanandana), a wondrous narrative has been heard by you, and the serpents were reduced to ashes and have gone to the realm of their ancestors.
कथंचित्तक्षको मुक्तः सत्यत्वात्तव पार्थिव ।
ऋषयः पूजिताः सर्वे गतिं दृष्ट्वा महात्मनः ॥१४॥
14. kathaṁcittakṣako muktaḥ satyatvāttava pārthiva ,
ṛṣayaḥ pūjitāḥ sarve gatiṁ dṛṣṭvā mahātmanaḥ.
14. kathaṃcit takṣakaḥ muktaḥ satyatvāt tava pārthiva
ṛṣayaḥ pūjitāḥ sarve gatim dṛṣṭvā mahātmanaḥ
14. pārthiva takṣakaḥ tava satyatvāt kathaṃcit muktaḥ
sarve ṛṣayaḥ mahātmanaḥ gatim dṛṣṭvā pūjitāḥ
14. O king (pārthiva), Takṣaka was somehow liberated due to your adherence to truth (satyatva). All the sages were honored, having witnessed the deliverance of that great soul (mahātman).
प्राप्तः सुविपुलो धर्मः श्रुत्वा पापविनाशनम् ।
विमुक्तो हृदयग्रन्थिरुदारजनदर्शनात् ॥१५॥
15. prāptaḥ suvipulo dharmaḥ śrutvā pāpavināśanam ,
vimukto hṛdayagranthirudārajanadarśanāt.
15. prāptaḥ suvipulaḥ dharmaḥ śrutvā pāpavināśanam
vimuktaḥ hṛdayagranthiḥ udārajanadarśanāt
15. A very extensive understanding of natural law (dharma) was acquired upon hearing about the destruction of sins. The knot of the heart was completely loosened by the sight of noble individuals.
ये च पक्षधरा धर्मे सद्वृत्तरुचयश्च ये ।
यान्दृष्ट्वा हीयते पापं तेभ्यः कार्या नमस्क्रियाः ॥१६॥
16. ye ca pakṣadharā dharme sadvṛttarucayaśca ye ,
yāndṛṣṭvā hīyate pāpaṁ tebhyaḥ kāryā namaskriyāḥ.
16. ye ca pakṣadharā dharme sadvṛttarucayaḥ ca ye
yān dṛṣṭvā hīyate pāpam tebhyaḥ kāryā namaskriyāḥ
16. Salutations should be offered to those who uphold natural law (dharma) and delight in virtuous conduct, for by merely seeing them, one's sin diminishes.
सूत उवाच ।
एतच्छ्रुत्वा द्विजश्रेष्ठात्स राजा जनमेजयः ।
पूजयामास तमृषिमनुमान्य पुनः पुनः ॥१७॥
17. sūta uvāca ,
etacchrutvā dvijaśreṣṭhātsa rājā janamejayaḥ ,
pūjayāmāsa tamṛṣimanumānya punaḥ punaḥ.
17. sūtaḥ uvāca etat śrutvā dvijaśreṣṭhāt sa rājā
janamejayaḥ pūjayāmāsa tam ṛṣim anumānya punaḥ punaḥ
17. Sūta said: Having heard this [account] from the foremost among the twice-born, King Janamejaya repeatedly honored and worshipped that sage.
पप्रच्छ तमृषिं चापि वैशंपायनमच्युतम् ।
कथावशेषं धर्मज्ञो वनवासस्य सत्तम ॥१८॥
18. papraccha tamṛṣiṁ cāpi vaiśaṁpāyanamacyutam ,
kathāvaśeṣaṁ dharmajño vanavāsasya sattama.
18. papraccha tam ṛṣim ca api vaiśaṃpāyanam acyutam
kathāvaśeṣam dharmajñaḥ vanavāsasya sattamaḥ
18. And King [Janamejaya], who knew natural law (dharma) and was most excellent, asked that steadfast sage Vaiśampāyana about the remainder of the tale concerning the forest exile.
