युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
धर्माः पितामहेनोक्ता मोक्षधर्माश्रिताः शुभाः ।
धर्ममाश्रमिणां श्रेष्ठं वक्तुमर्हति मे भवान् ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
dharmāḥ pitāmahenoktā mokṣadharmāśritāḥ śubhāḥ ,
dharmamāśramiṇāṁ śreṣṭhaṁ vaktumarhati me bhavān.

śreṣṭham vaktum arhati me bhavān
1. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca.
pitāmahena uktāḥ śubhāḥ mokṣadharmāśritāḥ dharmāḥ (santi).
bhavān me āśramiṇām śreṣṭham dharmam vaktum arhati.
1. Yudhiṣṭhira said: The auspicious natural laws (dharmas) pertaining to liberation (mokṣa) have been declared by my grandfather. You, Sir, should now explain to me the best natural law (dharma) for those in the various stages of life (āśrama).
भीष्म उवाच ।
सर्वत्र विहितो धर्मः स्वर्ग्यः सत्यफलोदयः ।
बहुद्वारस्य धर्मस्य नेहास्ति विफला क्रिया ॥२॥
2. bhīṣma uvāca ,
sarvatra vihito dharmaḥ svargyaḥ satyaphalodayaḥ ,
bahudvārasya dharmasya nehāsti viphalā kriyā.

| bahudvārasya dharmasya na iha asti viphalā kriyā
2. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca.
dharmaḥ sarvatra vihitaḥ,
svargyaḥ,
satyaphalodayaḥ (ca asti).
bahudvārasya dharmasya iha viphalā kriyā na asti.
2. Bhīṣma said: The natural law (dharma) is universally prescribed; it leads to heaven and yields true results. For this natural law (dharma) with its many paths, no action here is ever fruitless.
यस्मिन्यस्मिंस्तु विषये यो यो याति विनिश्चयम् ।
स तमेवाभिजानाति नान्यं भरतसत्तम ॥३॥
3. yasminyasmiṁstu viṣaye yo yo yāti viniścayam ,
sa tamevābhijānāti nānyaṁ bharatasattama.
3. yasmin yasmin tu viṣaye yaḥ yaḥ yāti viniścayam
| sa tam eva abhijānāti na anyam bharatasattama
3. bharatasattama,
yasmin yasmin tu viṣaye yaḥ yaḥ viniścayam yāti,
sa tam eva abhijānāti,
anyam na (abhijānāti).
3. O best of the Bhāratas, in whichever matter a person forms a firm conviction, that alone he truly understands, and not anything else.
अपि च त्वं नरव्याघ्र श्रोतुमर्हसि मे कथाम् ।
पुरा शक्रस्य कथितां नारदेन सुरर्षिणा ॥४॥
4. api ca tvaṁ naravyāghra śrotumarhasi me kathām ,
purā śakrasya kathitāṁ nāradena surarṣiṇā.
4. api ca tvam naravyāghra śrotum arhasi me kathām
purā śakrasya kathitām nāradena surarṣiṇā
4. naravyāghra api ca tvam me kathām śrotum arhasi
purā śakrasya surarṣiṇā nāradena kathitām
4. And you, O tiger among men, should also hear my story, which was once recounted to Indra by the divine sage Nārada.
सुरर्षिर्नारदो राजन्सिद्धस्त्रैलोक्यसंमतः ।
पर्येति क्रमशो लोकान्वायुरव्याहतो यथा ॥५॥
5. surarṣirnārado rājansiddhastrailokyasaṁmataḥ ,
paryeti kramaśo lokānvāyuravyāhato yathā.
5. surarṣiḥ nāradaḥ rājan siddhaḥ trailokyasaṃmataḥ
paryeti kramaśaḥ lokān vāyuḥ avyāhataḥ yathā
5. rājan surarṣiḥ nāradaḥ trailokyasaṃmataḥ siddhaḥ
avyāhataḥ vāyuḥ yathā kramaśaḥ lokān paryeti
5. O King, the divine sage Nārada is an accomplished being, revered by all three worlds. He roams through the worlds sequentially, just as the unimpeded wind.
स कदाचिन्महेष्वास देवराजालयं गतः ।
सत्कृतश्च महेन्द्रेण प्रत्यासन्नगतोऽभवत् ॥६॥
6. sa kadācinmaheṣvāsa devarājālayaṁ gataḥ ,
satkṛtaśca mahendreṇa pratyāsannagato'bhavat.
6. saḥ kadācit maheṣvāsa devarājālayam gataḥ
satkṛtaḥ ca mahendreṇa pratyāsannagataḥ abhavat
6. maheṣvāsa saḥ kadācit devarājālayam gataḥ ca
mahendreṇa satkṛtaḥ pratyāsannagataḥ abhavat
6. O great archer, he (Nārada) once visited the abode of Indra, the king of the gods. And, honored by the great Indra, he then sat near him.
तं कृतक्षणमासीनं पर्यपृच्छच्छचीपतिः ।
ब्रह्मर्षे किंचिदाश्चर्यमस्ति दृष्टं त्वयानघ ॥७॥
7. taṁ kṛtakṣaṇamāsīnaṁ paryapṛcchacchacīpatiḥ ,
brahmarṣe kiṁcidāścaryamasti dṛṣṭaṁ tvayānagha.
7. tam kṛtakṣaṇam āsīnam paryapṛcchat śacīpatiḥ
brahmarṣe kiṃcit āścaryam asti dṛṣṭam tvayā anagha
7. śacīpatiḥ tam kṛtakṣaṇam āsīnam paryapṛcchat
brahmarṣe anagha tvayā kiṃcit āścaryam dṛṣṭam asti
7. The lord of Śacī (Indra) asked him, Nārada, who was seated and at leisure: 'O brahmin sage, O faultless one, have you seen anything wondrous?'
यथा त्वमपि विप्रर्षे त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम् ।
जातकौतूहलो नित्यं सिद्धश्चरसि साक्षिवत् ॥८॥
8. yathā tvamapi viprarṣe trailokyaṁ sacarācaram ,
jātakautūhalo nityaṁ siddhaścarasi sākṣivat.
8. yathā tvam api viprarṣe trailokyam sacarācaram
jātakautūhalaḥ nityam siddhaḥ carasi sākṣivat
8. yathā tvam api viprarṣe jātakautūhalaḥ siddhaḥ
nityam sacarācaram trailokyam sākṣivat carasi
8. O sage among brahmins, just as you, ever curious and like a perfected being (siddha), constantly wander through the three worlds, encompassing all their moving and non-moving beings, as a mere witness.
न ह्यस्त्यविदितं लोके देवर्षे तव किंचन ।
श्रुतं वाप्यनुभूतं वा दृष्टं वा कथयस्व मे ॥९॥
9. na hyastyaviditaṁ loke devarṣe tava kiṁcana ,
śrutaṁ vāpyanubhūtaṁ vā dṛṣṭaṁ vā kathayasva me.
9. na hi asti aviditam loke devarṣe tava kiṃcana
śrutam vā api anubhūtam vā dṛṣṭam vā kathayasva me
9. devarṣe hi tava kiṃcana aviditam loke na asti
śrutam vā api anubhūtam vā dṛṣṭam vā me kathayasva
9. Indeed, O divine sage, there is nothing in this world unknown to you, whether it has been heard, experienced, or seen. Therefore, please recount it to me.
तस्मै राजन्सुरेन्द्राय नारदो वदतां वरः ।
आसीनायोपपन्नाय प्रोक्तवान्विपुलां कथाम् ॥१०॥
10. tasmai rājansurendrāya nārado vadatāṁ varaḥ ,
āsīnāyopapannāya proktavānvipulāṁ kathām.
10. tasmai rājan surendrāya nāradaḥ vadatām varaḥ
āsīnāya upapannāya proktavān vipulām kathām
10. rājan nāradaḥ vadatām varaḥ tásmai surendrāya
āsīnāya upapannāya vipulām kathām proktavān
10. O King, Narada, the foremost among speakers, narrated an extensive story to that lord of gods, Indra, who was suitably seated there.
यथा येन च कल्पेन स तस्मै द्विजसत्तमः ।
कथां कथितवान्पृष्टस्तथा त्वमपि मे शृणु ॥११॥
11. yathā yena ca kalpena sa tasmai dvijasattamaḥ ,
kathāṁ kathitavānpṛṣṭastathā tvamapi me śṛṇu.
11. yathā yena ca kalpena saḥ tasmai dvijasattamaḥ
kathām kathitavān pṛṣṭaḥ tathā tvam api me śṛṇu
11. yathā ca yena kalpena saḥ dvijasattamaḥ pṛṣṭaḥ
tásmai kathām kathitavān tathā tvam api me śṛṇu
11. Just as that best among brahmins, when questioned, narrated the story to him and in what manner, so too you (should) listen to me.
