वैशंपायन उवाच ।
मन्दपालोऽपि कौरव्य चिन्तयानः सुतांस्तदा ।
उक्तवानप्यशीतांशुं नैव स स्म न तप्यते ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
mandapālo'pi kauravya cintayānaḥ sutāṁstadā ,
uktavānapyaśītāṁśuṁ naiva sa sma na tapyate.

sutān tadā | uktavān api aśītāṃśum na eva sa sma na tapyate
1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said, "O scion of Kuru (Kauravya), Mandapāla, then contemplating his sons, spoke (his plea). But even the moon (aśītāṃśu) neither remembered (their plight) nor grieved."
स तप्यमानः पुत्रार्थे लपितामिदमब्रवीत् ।
कथं न्वशक्ताः प्लवने लपिते मम पुत्रकाः ॥२॥
2. sa tapyamānaḥ putrārthe lapitāmidamabravīt ,
kathaṁ nvaśaktāḥ plavane lapite mama putrakāḥ.
2. sa tapyamānaḥ putrārthe lapitam idam abravīt |
katham nu aśaktāḥ plavane lapite mama putrakāḥ
2. He, grieving for his sons, uttered this lament: "How indeed are my sons unable to swim while I am lamenting?"
वर्धमाने हुतवहे वाते शीघ्रं प्रवायति ।
असमर्था विमोक्षाय भविष्यन्ति ममात्मजाः ॥३॥
3. vardhamāne hutavahe vāte śīghraṁ pravāyati ,
asamarthā vimokṣāya bhaviṣyanti mamātmajāḥ.

asamarthā vimokṣāya bhaviṣyanti mama ātmajāḥ
3. As the fire grows and the wind blows swiftly, my children will be unable to escape.
कथं न्वशक्ता त्राणाय माता तेषां तपस्विनी ।
भविष्यत्यसुखाविष्टा पुत्रत्राणमपश्यती ॥४॥
4. kathaṁ nvaśaktā trāṇāya mātā teṣāṁ tapasvinī ,
bhaviṣyatyasukhāviṣṭā putratrāṇamapaśyatī.
4. kathaṃ nu aśaktā trāṇāya mātā teṣāṃ tapasvinī
bhaviṣyati asukha āviṣṭā putratrāṇam apaśyatī
4. How then will their miserable mother, helpless to protect them, become overwhelmed with sorrow, failing to see the rescue of her children?
कथं नु सरणेऽशक्तान्पतने च ममात्मजान् ।
संतप्यमाना अभितो वाशमानाभिधावती ॥५॥
5. kathaṁ nu saraṇe'śaktānpatane ca mamātmajān ,
saṁtapyamānā abhito vāśamānābhidhāvatī.
5. kathaṃ nu saraṇe aśaktān patane ca mama ātmajān
saṃtapyamānā abhitaḥ vāśamānā abhidhāvatī
5. How will she run towards my children, lamenting and crying out all around, my children who are helpless both in running and in falling?
जरितारिः कथं पुत्रः सारिसृक्वः कथं च मे ।
स्तम्बमित्रः कथं द्रोणः कथं सा च तपस्विनी ॥६॥
6. jaritāriḥ kathaṁ putraḥ sārisṛkvaḥ kathaṁ ca me ,
stambamitraḥ kathaṁ droṇaḥ kathaṁ sā ca tapasvinī.
6. jaritāriḥ kathaṃ putraḥ sārisṛkvaḥ kathaṃ ca me
stambamitraḥ kathaṃ droṇaḥ kathaṃ sā ca tapasvinī
6. What will become of my son Jaritari? What of Sarisṛkva? What of Stambamitra and Droṇa? And what of that miserable mother?
लालप्यमानं तमृषिं मन्दपालं तथा वने ।
लपिता प्रत्युवाचेदं सासूयमिव भारत ॥७॥
7. lālapyamānaṁ tamṛṣiṁ mandapālaṁ tathā vane ,
lapitā pratyuvācedaṁ sāsūyamiva bhārata.
7. lālapyamānam tam ṛṣim mandapālam tathā vane
| lapitā pratyuvāca idam sāsūyam iva bhārata
7. O Bhārata, Lapitā then replied to that sage (ṛṣi) Mandapāla, who was lamenting in the forest, as if with indignation.
न ते सुतेष्ववेक्षास्ति तानृषीनुक्तवानसि ।
तेजस्विनो वीर्यवन्तो न तेषां ज्वलनाद्भयम् ॥८॥
8. na te suteṣvavekṣāsti tānṛṣīnuktavānasi ,
tejasvino vīryavanto na teṣāṁ jvalanādbhayam.
8. na te suteṣu avekṣā asti tān ṛṣīn uktavān asi |
tejasvinaḥ vīryavantaḥ na teṣām jvalanāt bhayam
8. You have no regard for your sons; you have called them sages (ṛṣis). They are luminous and mighty; there is no fear for them from fire.
तथाग्नौ ते परीत्ताश्च त्वया हि मम संनिधौ ।
प्रतिश्रुतं तथा चेति ज्वलनेन महात्मना ॥९॥
9. tathāgnau te parīttāśca tvayā hi mama saṁnidhau ,
pratiśrutaṁ tathā ceti jvalanena mahātmanā.
9. tathā agnau te parīttāḥ ca tvayā hi mama saṃnidhau
| pratiśrutam tathā ca iti jvalanena mahātmanā
9. Indeed, they were entrusted by you to Agni in my presence, and it was thus promised by the great-souled (mahātman) Agni himself.
लोकपालोऽनृतां वाचं न तु वक्ता कथंचन ।
समर्थास्ते च वक्तारो न ते तेष्वस्ति मानसम् ॥१०॥
10. lokapālo'nṛtāṁ vācaṁ na tu vaktā kathaṁcana ,
samarthāste ca vaktāro na te teṣvasti mānasam.
10. lokapālaḥ anṛtām vācam na tu vaktā kathaṃcana |
samarthāḥ te ca vaktāraḥ na te teṣu asti mānasam
10. A guardian of the worlds (lokapāla) will never speak an untrue word. And though they (your sons) are capable speakers, your mind is not in them.
तामेव तु ममामित्रीं चिन्तयन्परितप्यसे ।
ध्रुवं मयि न ते स्नेहो यथा तस्यां पुराभवत् ॥११॥
11. tāmeva tu mamāmitrīṁ cintayanparitapyase ,
dhruvaṁ mayi na te sneho yathā tasyāṁ purābhavat.
11. tām eva tu mama amitrīm cintayan paritapyase |
dhruvam mayi na te snehaḥ yathā tasyām purā abhavat
11. You are distressed, thinking only of her, my enemy. Surely, you no longer have the same affection (sneha) for me as you had for her before.
न हि पक्षवता न्याय्यं निःस्नेहेन सुहृज्जने ।
पीड्यमान उपद्रष्टुं शक्तेनात्मा कथंचन ॥१२॥
12. na hi pakṣavatā nyāyyaṁ niḥsnehena suhṛjjane ,
pīḍyamāna upadraṣṭuṁ śaktenātmā kathaṁcana.
12. na hi pakṣavatā nyāyyam niḥsnehena suhṛjjane
pīḍyamāne upadraṣṭum śaktena ātmā kathaṃcana
12. Indeed, it is not proper that you, being capable (śakta) and having supporters (pakṣavat), should somehow just watch while I, your dear one, am being tormented by you, who are devoid of affection (niḥsneha).
गच्छ त्वं जरितामेव यदर्थं परितप्यसे ।
चरिष्याम्यहमप्येका यथा कापुरुषे तथा ॥१३॥
13. gaccha tvaṁ jaritāmeva yadarthaṁ paritapyase ,
cariṣyāmyahamapyekā yathā kāpuruṣe tathā.
13. gaccha tvam jaritām eva yadartham paritapyase
| cariṣyāmi aham api ekā yathā kāpuruṣe tathā
13. You go to Jaritā, for whose sake you are distressed. I, too, will wander alone, just as if I were with a despicable man.
मन्दपाल उवाच ।
नाहमेवं चरे लोके यथा त्वमभिमन्यसे ।
अपत्यहेतोर्विचरे तच्च कृच्छ्रगतं मम ॥१४॥
14. mandapāla uvāca ,
nāhamevaṁ care loke yathā tvamabhimanyase ,
apatyahetorvicare tacca kṛcchragataṁ mama.
14. mandapāla uvāca | na aham evam care loke yathā tvam
abhimanyase | apatyahetoḥ vicare tat ca kṛcchragatam mama
14. Mandapāla said: "I do not behave in this world as you suppose. I wander for the sake of my offspring (apatya), and they are now in a difficult situation for me."
भूतं हित्वा भविष्येऽर्थे योऽवलम्बेत मन्दधीः ।
अवमन्येत तं लोको यथेच्छसि तथा कुरु ॥१५॥
15. bhūtaṁ hitvā bhaviṣye'rthe yo'valambeta mandadhīḥ ,
avamanyeta taṁ loko yathecchasi tathā kuru.
15. bhūtam hitvā bhaviṣye arthe yaḥ avalambeta mandadhīḥ
avamanyeta tam lokaḥ yathā icchasi tathā kuru
15. A dull-witted person who discards what has happened and depends only on future prospects will be despised by the world. Do as you wish.
एष हि ज्वलमानोऽग्निर्लेलिहानो महीरुहान् ।
द्वेष्यं हि हृदि संतापं जनयत्यशिवं मम ॥१६॥
16. eṣa hi jvalamāno'gnirlelihāno mahīruhān ,
dveṣyaṁ hi hṛdi saṁtāpaṁ janayatyaśivaṁ mama.
16. eṣaḥ hi jvalamānaḥ agniḥ lelihānaḥ mahīruhān
dveṣyam hi hṛdi saṃtāpam janayati aśivam mama
16. This very fire, intensely burning and licking at the trees, indeed generates hateful anguish and misfortune within my heart.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तस्माद्देशादतिक्रान्ते ज्वलने जरिता ततः ।
जगाम पुत्रकानेव त्वरिता पुत्रगृद्धिनी ॥१७॥
17. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tasmāddeśādatikrānte jvalane jaritā tataḥ ,
jagāma putrakāneva tvaritā putragṛddhinī.
17. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tasmāt deśāt atikrānte jvalane
jaritā tataḥ jagāma putrakān eva tvaritā putragṛddhinī
17. Vaiśampāyana said: After the fire had moved past that spot, Jaritā, now hastened and yearning for her sons, went directly to them.
सा तान्कुशलिनः सर्वान्निर्मुक्ताञ्जातवेदसः ।
रोरूयमाणा कृपणा सुतान्दृष्टवती वने ॥१८॥
18. sā tānkuśalinaḥ sarvānnirmuktāñjātavedasaḥ ,
rorūyamāṇā kṛpaṇā sutāndṛṣṭavatī vane.
18. sā tān kuśalinaḥ sarvān nirmuktān jātavedasaḥ
rorūyamāṇā kṛpaṇā sutān dṛṣṭavatī vane
18. She, lamenting and pitiable, saw all her sons in the forest, safe and delivered from the fire (jātavedas).
अश्रद्धेयतमं तेषां दर्शनं सा पुनः पुनः ।
एकैकशश्च तान्पुत्रान्क्रोशमानान्वपद्यत ॥१९॥
19. aśraddheyatamaṁ teṣāṁ darśanaṁ sā punaḥ punaḥ ,
ekaikaśaśca tānputrānkrośamānānvapadyata.
19. aśraddheyatamam teṣām darśanam sā punaḥ punaḥ
ekaikaśaḥ ca tān putrān krośamānān avapadyata
19. The sight of them was most incredible to her, and repeatedly she encountered each of those sons wailing.
ततोऽभ्यगच्छत्सहसा मन्दपालोऽपि भारत ।
अथ ते सर्व एवैनं नाभ्यनन्दन्त वै सुताः ॥२०॥
20. tato'bhyagacchatsahasā mandapālo'pi bhārata ,
atha te sarva evainaṁ nābhyanandanta vai sutāḥ.
20. tataḥ abhyagacchat sahasā mandapālaḥ api bhārata
atha te sarve eva enam na abhyanandanta vai sutāḥ
20. Then, O Bhārata, Mandapāla also suddenly approached. But at that time, all of those sons certainly did not welcome him.
लालप्यमानमेकैकं जरितां च पुनः पुनः ।
नोचुस्ते वचनं किंचित्तमृषिं साध्वसाधु वा ॥२१॥
21. lālapyamānamekaikaṁ jaritāṁ ca punaḥ punaḥ ,
nocuste vacanaṁ kiṁcittamṛṣiṁ sādhvasādhu vā.
21. lālapyamānam ekaikam jaritām ca punaḥ punaḥ na
ūcuḥ te vacanam kiñcit tam ṛṣim sādhu asādhu vā
21. To that sage, who was lamenting each (of his sons) repeatedly, and to Jaritā, the sons spoke not a single word, whether good or bad.
मन्दपाल उवाच ।
ज्येष्ठः सुतस्ते कतमः कतमस्तदनन्तरः ।
मध्यमः कतमः पुत्रः कनिष्ठः कतमश्च ते ॥२२॥
22. mandapāla uvāca ,
jyeṣṭhaḥ sutaste katamaḥ katamastadanantaraḥ ,
madhyamaḥ katamaḥ putraḥ kaniṣṭhaḥ katamaśca te.
22. mandapālaḥ uvāca jyeṣṭhaḥ sutaḥ te katamaḥ katamaḥ tat
anantaraḥ madhyamaḥ katamaḥ putraḥ kaniṣṭhaḥ katamaḥ ca te
22. Mandapāla said: 'Which one is your eldest son? Which one is the one immediately after him? Which son is the middle one? And which one is your youngest?'
एवं ब्रुवन्तं दुःखार्तं किं मां न प्रतिभाषसे ।
कृतवानस्मि हव्याशे नैव शान्तिमितो लभे ॥२३॥
23. evaṁ bruvantaṁ duḥkhārtaṁ kiṁ māṁ na pratibhāṣase ,
kṛtavānasmi havyāśe naiva śāntimito labhe.
23. evaṃ bruvantaṃ duḥkhārtaṃ kim māṃ na pratibhāṣase
kṛtavānasmi havyāśe na eva śāntim itaḥ labhe
23. Why do you not respond to me, who am speaking thus, afflicted by sorrow? O consumer of oblations (Agni), I have made a mistake, and indeed I find no peace (śānti) from this.
जरितोवाच ।
किं ते ज्येष्ठे सुते कार्यं किमनन्तरजेन वा ।
किं च ते मध्यमे कार्यं किं कनिष्ठे तपस्विनि ॥२४॥
24. jaritovāca ,
kiṁ te jyeṣṭhe sute kāryaṁ kimanantarajena vā ,
kiṁ ca te madhyame kāryaṁ kiṁ kaniṣṭhe tapasvini.
24. jaritā uvāca kim te jyeṣṭhe sute kāryam kim anantarajena
vā kim ca te madhyame kāryam kim kaniṣṭhe tapasvini
24. Jaritā said: 'What concern do you have for your eldest son, or for the one born after him? And what concern do you have for your middle son, or for your youngest son, the ascetic (tapasvin)?'
यस्त्वं मां सर्वशो हीनामुत्सृज्यासि गतः पुरा ।
तामेव लपितां गच्छ तरुणीं चारुहासिनीम् ॥२५॥
25. yastvaṁ māṁ sarvaśo hīnāmutsṛjyāsi gataḥ purā ,
tāmeva lapitāṁ gaccha taruṇīṁ cāruhāsinīm.
25. yaḥ tvam mām sarvaśaḥ hīnām utsṛjya asi gataḥ
purā tām eva lapitām gaccha taruṇīm cāruhāsinīm
25. You who formerly departed, having abandoned me, utterly deprived, go to that very youthful woman, the beautifully smiling one, whom you desire.
मन्दपाल उवाच ।
न स्त्रीणां विद्यते किंचिदन्यत्र पुरुषान्तरात् ।
सापत्नकमृते लोके भवितव्यं हि तत्तथा ॥२६॥
26. mandapāla uvāca ,
na strīṇāṁ vidyate kiṁcidanyatra puruṣāntarāt ,
sāpatnakamṛte loke bhavitavyaṁ hi tattathā.
26. mandapālaḥ uvāca na strīṇām vidyate kiñcit anyatra
puruṣāntarāt sāpatnakam ṛte loke bhavitavyam hi tat tathā
26. Mandapāla said: 'For women, nothing truly exists apart from another man. In this world, the only exception to this is co-wifehood; indeed, that is how it must be.'
सुव्रतापि हि कल्याणी सर्वलोकपरिश्रुता ।
अरुन्धती पर्यशङ्कद्वसिष्ठमृषिसत्तमम् ॥२७॥
27. suvratāpi hi kalyāṇī sarvalokapariśrutā ,
arundhatī paryaśaṅkadvasiṣṭhamṛṣisattamam.
27. suvratā api hi kalyāṇī sarvalokapariśrutā
arundhatī paryaśaṅkat vasiṣṭham ṛṣisattamam
27. Even the virtuous and auspicious Arundhatī, who was renowned throughout all worlds, suspected Vasiṣṭha, the foremost among sages.
विशुद्धभावमत्यन्तं सदा प्रियहिते रतम् ।
सप्तर्षिमध्यगं वीरमवमेने च तं मुनिम् ॥२८॥
28. viśuddhabhāvamatyantaṁ sadā priyahite ratam ,
saptarṣimadhyagaṁ vīramavamene ca taṁ munim.
28. viśuddhabhāvam atyantam sadā priyahite ratam
saptarṣimadhyagam vīram avamene ca tam munim
28. And she disrespected that sage (muni), Vasiṣṭha, who had an exceedingly pure disposition, was always devoted to what is dear and beneficial, was counted among the seven sages (saptarṣi), and was brave.
अपध्यानेन सा तेन धूमारुणसमप्रभा ।
लक्ष्यालक्ष्या नाभिरूपा निमित्तमिव लक्ष्यते ॥२९॥
29. apadhyānena sā tena dhūmāruṇasamaprabhā ,
lakṣyālakṣyā nābhirūpā nimittamiva lakṣyate.
29. apadhyānena sā tena dhūmāruṇasamaprabhā lakṣyā
alakṣyā na abhirūpā nimittam iva lakṣyate
29. Due to that evil thought, she (Arundhatī) appeared like an omen, with a smoky-reddish glow, at times visible, at times invisible, and without her usual form.
अपत्यहेतोः संप्राप्तं तथा त्वमपि मामिह ।
इष्टमेवंगते हित्वा सा तथैव च वर्तसे ॥३०॥
30. apatyahetoḥ saṁprāptaṁ tathā tvamapi māmiha ,
iṣṭamevaṁgate hitvā sā tathaiva ca vartase.
30. apatyahetoḥ samprāptam tathā tvam api mām iha
iṣṭam evaṃgate hitvā sā tathā eva ca vartase
30. You too, having come to me here for the sake of offspring, are now abandoning your beloved in such a state, and thus behave just as she (Arundhatī) did.
नैव भार्येति विश्वासः कार्यः पुंसा कथंचन ।
न हि कार्यमनुध्याति भार्या पुत्रवती सती ॥३१॥
31. naiva bhāryeti viśvāsaḥ kāryaḥ puṁsā kathaṁcana ,
na hi kāryamanudhyāti bhāryā putravatī satī.
31. na eva bhāryā iti viśvāsaḥ kāryaḥ puṃsā kathaṃcana
na hi kāryam anudhyāti bhāryā putravatī satī
31. A man should never place complete trust in his wife in any circumstance, because a wife who has a son does not truly consider her husband's welfare (kārya).
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततस्ते सर्व एवैनं पुत्राः सम्यगुपासिरे ।
स च तानात्मजान्राजन्नाश्वासयितुमारभत् ॥३२॥
32. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataste sarva evainaṁ putrāḥ samyagupāsire ,
sa ca tānātmajānrājannāśvāsayitumārabhat.
32. vaiśampāyana uvāca tataḥ te sarve eva enam putrāḥ samyak
upāsire saḥ ca tān ātmajān rājan āśvāsayitum ārabhat
32. Vaiśampāyana said: Then all those sons properly attended to him. And he, O King, began to console those sons (ātmaja) of his.
