Vaiśaṃpāyana said, "O scion of Kuru (Kauravya), Mandapāla, then contemplating his sons, spoke (his plea). But even the moon (aśītāṃśu) neither remembered (their plight) nor grieved."

He, grieving for his sons, uttered this lament: "How indeed are my sons unable to swim while I am lamenting?"

How then will their miserable mother, helpless to protect them, become overwhelmed with sorrow, failing to see the rescue of her children?

What will become of my son Jaritari? What of Sarisṛkva? What of Stambamitra and Droṇa? And what of that miserable mother?

O Bhārata, Lapitā then replied to that sage (ṛṣi) Mandapāla, who was lamenting in the forest, as if with indignation.

You have no regard for your sons; you have called them sages (ṛṣis). They are luminous and mighty; there is no fear for them from fire.

10.
A guardian of the worlds (lokapāla) will never speak an untrue word. And though they (your sons) are capable speakers, your mind is not in them.

You are distressed, thinking only of her, my enemy. Surely, you no longer have the same affection (sneha) for me as you had for her before.

12.
Indeed, it is not proper that you, being capable (śakta) and having supporters (pakṣavat), should somehow just watch while I, your dear one, am being tormented by you, who are devoid of affection (niḥsneha).

Mandapāla said: "I do not behave in this world as you suppose. I wander for the sake of my offspring (apatya), and they are now in a difficult situation for me."

15.
A dull-witted person who discards what has happened and depends only on future prospects will be despised by the world. Do as you wish.

Vaiśampāyana said: After the fire had moved past that spot, Jaritā, now hastened and yearning for her sons, went directly to them.

Why do you not respond to me, who am speaking thus, afflicted by sorrow? O consumer of oblations (Agni), I have made a mistake, and indeed I find no peace (śānti) from this.

Mandapāla said: 'For women, nothing truly exists apart from another man. In this world, the only exception to this is co-wifehood; indeed, that is how it must be.'

Even the virtuous and auspicious Arundhatī, who was renowned throughout all worlds, suspected Vasiṣṭha, the foremost among sages.

Due to that evil thought, she (Arundhatī) appeared like an omen, with a smoky-reddish glow, at times visible, at times invisible, and without her usual form.
