वैशंपायन उवाच ।
गते तु विदुरे राजन्नाश्रमं पाण्डवान्प्रति ।
धृतराष्ट्रो महाप्राज्ञः पर्यतप्यत भारत ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
gate tu vidure rājannāśramaṁ pāṇḍavānprati ,
dhṛtarāṣṭro mahāprājñaḥ paryatapyata bhārata.

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: "But O king, when Vidura had gone to the hermitage where the Pāṇḍavas were, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, despite his great wisdom, felt immense grief, O Bhārata."
स सभाद्वारमागम्य विदुरस्मारमोहितः ।
समक्षं पार्थिवेन्द्राणां पपाताविष्टचेतनः ॥२॥
2. sa sabhādvāramāgamya vidurasmāramohitaḥ ,
samakṣaṁ pārthivendrāṇāṁ papātāviṣṭacetanaḥ.
2. sa sabhādvāram āgamya vidurasmāramohitaḥ
samakṣam pārthivendrāṇām papāta āviṣṭacetanaḥ
2. Bewildered by the vivid memory of Vidura, he approached the assembly hall entrance and, with an overwhelmed mind, collapsed in the presence of the great kings.
स तु लब्ध्वा पुनः संज्ञां समुत्थाय महीतलात् ।
समीपोपस्थितं राजा संजयं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥३॥
3. sa tu labdhvā punaḥ saṁjñāṁ samutthāya mahītalāt ,
samīpopasthitaṁ rājā saṁjayaṁ vākyamabravīt.
3. sa tu labdhvā punaḥ saṃjñām samutthāya mahītalāt
samīpopasthitam rājā saṃjayam vākyam abravīt
3. The king, having regained his consciousness, rose from the ground and spoke these words to Sanjaya, who was standing nearby.
भ्राता मम सुहृच्चैव साक्षाद्धर्म इवापरः ।
तस्य स्मृत्वाद्य सुभृशं हृदयं दीर्यतीव मे ॥४॥
4. bhrātā mama suhṛccaiva sākṣāddharma ivāparaḥ ,
tasya smṛtvādya subhṛśaṁ hṛdayaṁ dīryatīva me.
4. bhrātā mama suhṛt ca eva sākṣāt dharmaḥ iva aparaḥ
tasya smṛtvā adya subhṛśam hṛdayam dīryati iva me
4. My brother and true friend, he was truly like a second embodiment of righteousness (dharma) itself. Today, remembering him so intensely, my heart feels as if it is breaking apart.
तमानयस्व धर्मज्ञं मम भ्रातरमाशु वै ।
इति ब्रुवन्स नृपतिः करुणं पर्यदेवयत् ॥५॥
5. tamānayasva dharmajñaṁ mama bhrātaramāśu vai ,
iti bruvansa nṛpatiḥ karuṇaṁ paryadevayat.
5. tam ānayasva dharmajñam mama bhrātaram āśu vai
iti bruvan saḥ nṛpatiḥ karuṇam paryadevayat
5. "Bring him quickly, that knower of righteousness (dharma), my brother!" Saying this, the king lamented piteously.
पश्चात्तापाभिसंतप्तो विदुरस्मारकर्शितः ।
भ्रातृस्नेहादिदं राजन्संजयं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥६॥
6. paścāttāpābhisaṁtapto vidurasmārakarśitaḥ ,
bhrātṛsnehādidaṁ rājansaṁjayaṁ vākyamabravīt.
6. paścāttāpābhisantaptaḥ vidurasmārakarśitaḥ
bhrātṛsnehaāt idam rājan sañjayam vākyam abravīt
6. Tormented by remorse and distressed by the recollection of Vidura, O King, [he] spoke this statement to Sanjaya out of brotherly affection.
गच्छ संजय जानीहि भ्रातरं विदुरं मम ।
यदि जीवति रोषेण मया पापेन निर्धुतः ॥७॥
7. gaccha saṁjaya jānīhi bhrātaraṁ viduraṁ mama ,
yadi jīvati roṣeṇa mayā pāpena nirdhutaḥ.
7. gaccha sañjaya jānīhi bhrātaram viduram mama
yadi jīvati roṣeṇa mayā pāpena nirdhutaḥ
7. Go, Sanjaya, and find out about my brother Vidura, [to see] if he is still alive, [he who was] expelled by me, a sinful one, in anger.
न हि तेन मम भ्रात्रा सुसूक्ष्ममपि किंचन ।
व्यलीकं कृतपूर्वं मे प्राज्ञेनामितबुद्धिना ॥८॥
8. na hi tena mama bhrātrā susūkṣmamapi kiṁcana ,
vyalīkaṁ kṛtapūrvaṁ me prājñenāmitabuddhinā.
8. na hi tena mama bhrātrā susūkṣmam api kiñcana
vyalīkam kṛtapūrvam me prājñena amitabuddhinā
8. Indeed, my wise one (prājña) brother, of immeasurable intellect, never did even the slightest wrong (vyalīka) against me.
स व्यलीकं कथं प्राप्तो मत्तः परमबुद्धिमान् ।
न जह्याज्जीवितं प्राज्ञस्तं गच्छानय संजय ॥९॥
9. sa vyalīkaṁ kathaṁ prāpto mattaḥ paramabuddhimān ,
na jahyājjīvitaṁ prājñastaṁ gacchānaya saṁjaya.
9. saḥ vyalīkam katham prāptaḥ mattaḥ paramabuddhimān
na jahyāt jīvitam prājñaḥ tam gaccha ānaya sañjaya
9. How could that supremely intelligent and wise one (prājña) have received such an offense (vyalīka) from me? He would not abandon his life! Go and bring him back, Sanjaya.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा राज्ञस्तमनुमान्य च ।
संजयो बाढमित्युक्त्वा प्राद्रवत्काम्यकं वनम् ॥१०॥
10. tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā rājñastamanumānya ca ,
saṁjayo bāḍhamityuktvā prādravatkāmyakaṁ vanam.
10. tasya tatvacanam śrutvā rājñaḥ tam anumānya ca
sañjayaḥ bāḍham iti uktvā prādravat kāmyakam vanam
10. Having heard that speech from the king and having agreed to him, Sañjaya, saying "Certainly!", hastened to the Kamyaka forest.
सोऽचिरेण समासाद्य तद्वनं यत्र पाण्डवाः ।
रौरवाजिनसंवीतं ददर्शाथ युधिष्ठिरम् ॥११॥
11. so'cireṇa samāsādya tadvanaṁ yatra pāṇḍavāḥ ,
rauravājinasaṁvītaṁ dadarśātha yudhiṣṭhiram.
11. saḥ acireṇa samāsādya tadvanaṃ yatra pāṇḍavāḥ
rauravājinasamvītam dadarśa atha yudhiṣṭhiram
11. He (Sañjaya), having quickly reached that forest where the Pāṇḍavas were, then saw Yudhiṣṭhira, who was covered with the skin of a Ruru deer.
विदुरेण सहासीनं ब्राह्मणैश्च सहस्रशः ।
भ्रातृभिश्चाभिसंगुप्तं देवैरिव शतक्रतुम् ॥१२॥
12. vidureṇa sahāsīnaṁ brāhmaṇaiśca sahasraśaḥ ,
bhrātṛbhiścābhisaṁguptaṁ devairiva śatakratum.
12. vidureṇa saha āsīnam brāhmaṇaiḥ ca sahasraśaḥ
bhrātṛbhiḥ ca abhisamguptam devaiḥ iva śatakratum
12. sahasraśaḥ brāhmaṇaiḥ vidureṇa ca saha āsīnam
bhrātṛbhiḥ ca abhisamguptam devaiḥ iva śatakratum
12. He was seated with Vidura and thousands of Brahmins, well-protected by his brothers, just as Indra (Śatakratu) is surrounded by the gods.
युधिष्ठिरमथाभ्येत्य पूजयामास संजयः ।
भीमार्जुनयमांश्चापि तदर्हं प्रत्यपद्यत ॥१३॥
13. yudhiṣṭhiramathābhyetya pūjayāmāsa saṁjayaḥ ,
bhīmārjunayamāṁścāpi tadarhaṁ pratyapadyata.
13. yudhiṣṭhiram atha abhyetya pūjayāmāsa sañjayaḥ
bhīmārjunayamān ca api tadarham pratyapadyata
13. Then Sañjaya, having approached Yudhiṣṭhira, honored him. He also greeted Bhīma, Arjuna, and the Yamas (Nakula and Sahadeva) in a manner appropriate to their rank.
राज्ञा पृष्टः स कुशलं सुखासीनश्च संजयः ।
शशंसागमने हेतुमिदं चैवाब्रवीद्वचः ॥१४॥
14. rājñā pṛṣṭaḥ sa kuśalaṁ sukhāsīnaśca saṁjayaḥ ,
śaśaṁsāgamane hetumidaṁ caivābravīdvacaḥ.
14. rājnā pṛṣṭaḥ sa kuśalam sukhāsīnaḥ ca sañjayaḥ |
śaśaṃsa āgamane hetum idam ca eva abravīt vacaḥ
14. The king (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) questioned Sañjaya about his well-being. Sañjaya, seated comfortably, then explained the reason for his arrival and spoke these words.
राजा स्मरति ते क्षत्तर्धृतराष्ट्रोऽम्बिकासुतः ।
तं पश्य गत्वा त्वं क्षिप्रं संजीवय च पार्थिवम् ॥१५॥
15. rājā smarati te kṣattardhṛtarāṣṭro'mbikāsutaḥ ,
taṁ paśya gatvā tvaṁ kṣipraṁ saṁjīvaya ca pārthivam.
15. rājā smarati te kṣattar dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ ambikāsutaḥ |
tam paśya gatvā tvam kṣipram sañjīvaya ca pārthivam
15. O charioteer (kṣattṛ), King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the son of Ambikā, remembers you. Go quickly and see him, and revive the monarch!
सोऽनुमान्य नरश्रेष्ठान्पाण्डवान्कुरुनन्दनान् ।
नियोगाद्राजसिंहस्य गन्तुमर्हसि मानद ॥१६॥
16. so'numānya naraśreṣṭhānpāṇḍavānkurunandanān ,
niyogādrājasiṁhasya gantumarhasi mānada.
16. saḥ anumānya naraśreṣṭhān pāṇḍavān kurunandanān
| niyogāt rājasiṃhasya gantum arhasi mānada
16. Having obtained permission from those foremost among men, the Pāṇḍavas, O joy of the Kurus, you, O giver of honor, should go at the command of the lion among kings (Dhṛtarāṣṭra).
एवमुक्तस्तु विदुरो धीमान्स्वजनवत्सलः ।
युधिष्ठिरस्यानुमते पुनरायाद्गजाह्वयम् ॥१७॥
17. evamuktastu viduro dhīmānsvajanavatsalaḥ ,
yudhiṣṭhirasyānumate punarāyādgajāhvayam.
17. evam uktaḥ tu viduraḥ dhīmān svajanavatsalaḥ
| yudhiṣṭhirasya anumate punaḥ āyāt gajāhvayam
17. Thus addressed, the wise Vidura, who was affectionate towards his kinsmen, with the permission of Yudhiṣṭhira, returned to Hastināpura.
तमब्रवीन्महाप्राज्ञं धृतराष्ट्रः प्रतापवान् ।
दिष्ट्या प्राप्तोऽसि धर्मज्ञ दिष्ट्या स्मरसि मेऽनघ ॥१८॥
18. tamabravīnmahāprājñaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ pratāpavān ,
diṣṭyā prāpto'si dharmajña diṣṭyā smarasi me'nagha.
18. tam abravīt mahāprājñam dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ pratāpavān
diṣṭyā prāptaḥ asi dharmajña diṣṭyā smarasi me anagha
18. The powerful Dhṛtarāṣṭra said to that very wise one, "Fortunately you have arrived, O knower of natural law (dharma)! Fortunately, O sinless one, you remember me."
अद्य रात्रौ दिवा चाहं त्वत्कृते भरतर्षभ ।
प्रजागरे प्रपश्यामि विचित्रं देहमात्मनः ॥१९॥
19. adya rātrau divā cāhaṁ tvatkṛte bharatarṣabha ,
prajāgare prapaśyāmi vicitraṁ dehamātmanaḥ.
19. adya rātrau divā ca aham tvatkṛte bharatarṣabha
prajāgare prapaśyāmi vicitram deham ātmanaḥ
19. O best among the Bharatas, for your sake, I clearly perceive my own extraordinary body (ātman) day and night, even in my wakeful state today.
सोऽङ्कमादाय विदुरं मूर्ध्न्युपाघ्राय चैव ह ।
क्षम्यतामिति चोवाच यदुक्तोऽसि मया रुषा ॥२०॥
20. so'ṅkamādāya viduraṁ mūrdhnyupāghrāya caiva ha ,
kṣamyatāmiti covāca yadukto'si mayā ruṣā.
20. saḥ aṅkam ādāya viduram mūrdhni upāghrāya ca eva
ha kṣamyatām iti ca uvāca yat uktaḥ asi mayā ruṣā
20. He took Vidura onto his lap and, indeed, having smelled his head (as a sign of affection), he also said, "Let what I said to you in anger be forgiven."
विदुर उवाच ।
क्षान्तमेव मया राजन्गुरुर्नः परमो भवान् ।
तथा ह्यस्म्यागतः क्षिप्रं त्वद्दर्शनपरायणः ॥२१॥
21. vidura uvāca ,
kṣāntameva mayā rājangururnaḥ paramo bhavān ,
tathā hyasmyāgataḥ kṣipraṁ tvaddarśanaparāyaṇaḥ.
21. viduraḥ uvāca kṣāntam eva mayā rājan guruḥ naḥ paramaḥ
bhavān tathā hi asmi āgataḥ kṣipram tvaddarśanaparāyaṇaḥ
21. Vidura said: "It has indeed been forgiven by me, O king. You are our supreme teacher (guru). That is why I have quickly arrived, solely intent on seeing you."
भवन्ति हि नरव्याघ्र पुरुषा धर्मचेतसः ।
दीनाभिपातिनो राजन्नात्र कार्या विचारणा ॥२२॥
22. bhavanti hi naravyāghra puruṣā dharmacetasaḥ ,
dīnābhipātino rājannātra kāryā vicāraṇā.
22. bhavanti hi naravyāghra puruṣāḥ dharmacetasaḥ
dīnābhipātinaḥ rājan na atra kāryā vicāraṇā
22. Indeed, O tiger among men, O King, persons whose minds are directed towards righteousness (dharma) become protectors of the distressed. No deliberation is required in this matter.
पाण्डोः सुता यादृशा मे तादृशा मे सुतास्तव ।
दीना इति हि मे बुद्धिरभिपन्नाद्य तान्प्रति ॥२३॥
23. pāṇḍoḥ sutā yādṛśā me tādṛśā me sutāstava ,
dīnā iti hi me buddhirabhipannādya tānprati.
23. pāṇḍoḥ sutāḥ yādṛśāḥ me tādṛśāḥ me sutāḥ tava
dīnāḥ iti hi me buddhiḥ abhipannā adya tān prati
23. Pāṇḍu's sons are like my own (to me), and my sons are like your own (to you). Indeed, the thought that they are distressed (dīnāḥ) has now come upon my mind concerning them.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
अन्योन्यमनुनीयैवं भ्रातरौ तौ महाद्युती ।
विदुरो धृतराष्ट्रश्च लेभाते परमां मुदम् ॥२४॥
24. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
anyonyamanunīyaivaṁ bhrātarau tau mahādyutī ,
viduro dhṛtarāṣṭraśca lebhāte paramāṁ mudam.
24. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca anyonyam anunīya evam bhrātarau tau
mahādyutī viduraḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ ca lebhāte paramām mudam
24. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: "Having thus reconciled with each other, those two greatly radiant brothers, Vidura and Dhṛtarāṣṭra, attained supreme joy."
