संजय उवाच ।
रथस्थं पुरुषव्याघ्रं दृष्ट्वा कर्णमवस्थितम् ।
हृष्टो दुर्योधनो राजन्निदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
rathasthaṁ puruṣavyāghraṁ dṛṣṭvā karṇamavasthitam ,
hṛṣṭo duryodhano rājannidaṁ vacanamabravīt.

1. Sanjaya said: "O King, when Duryodhana saw Karna, that tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), standing ready on the chariot, he became overjoyed and spoke these words."
सनाथमिदमत्यर्थं भवता पालितं बलम् ।
मन्ये किं तु समर्थं यद्धितं तत्संप्रधार्यताम् ॥२॥
2. sanāthamidamatyarthaṁ bhavatā pālitaṁ balam ,
manye kiṁ tu samarthaṁ yaddhitaṁ tatsaṁpradhāryatām.
2. sanātham idam atyartham bhavatā pālitaṃ balam manye
kiṃ tu samarthaṃ yat hitam tat sampradhāryatām
2. manye idam balam bhavatā atyartham pālitaṃ sanātham
kiṃ tu yat samarthaṃ hitam tat sampradhāryatām
2. I believe that this army, being exceedingly protected by you, is now truly well-commanded. However, let what is capable and beneficial be thoroughly considered and determined.
कर्ण उवाच ।
ब्रूहि तत्पुरुषव्याघ्र त्वं हि प्राज्ञतमो नृप ।
यथा चार्थपतिः कृत्यं पश्यते न तथेतरः ॥३॥
3. karṇa uvāca ,
brūhi tatpuruṣavyāghra tvaṁ hi prājñatamo nṛpa ,
yathā cārthapatiḥ kṛtyaṁ paśyate na tathetaraḥ.
3. karṇa uvāca brūhi tat puruṣavyāghra tvaṃ hi prājñatamaḥ
nṛpa yathā ca arthapatiḥ kṛtyaṃ paśyate na tathā itaraḥ

3. Karna said: 'O King, O tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), please state that, for you are indeed the most discerning. Just as a master of affairs (arthapati) perceives what needs to be done, no one else does.'
ते स्म सर्वे तव वचः श्रोतुकामा नरेश्वर ।
नान्याय्यं हि भवान्वाक्यं ब्रूयादिति मतिर्मम ॥४॥
4. te sma sarve tava vacaḥ śrotukāmā nareśvara ,
nānyāyyaṁ hi bhavānvākyaṁ brūyāditi matirmama.
4. te sma sarve tava vacaḥ śrotukāmāḥ nareśvara na
anyāyyam hi bhavān vākyam brūyāt iti matiḥ mama
4. nareśvara sarve te sma tava vacaḥ śrotukāmāḥ hi
bhavān anyāyyam vākyam na brūyāt iti mama matiḥ
4. O King, they are all eager to hear your words, for it is my belief that you would not speak anything unjust.
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
भीष्मः सेनाप्रणेतासीद्वयसा विक्रमेण च ।
श्रुतेन च सुसंपन्नः सर्वैर्योधगुणैस्तथा ॥५॥
5. duryodhana uvāca ,
bhīṣmaḥ senāpraṇetāsīdvayasā vikrameṇa ca ,
śrutena ca susaṁpannaḥ sarvairyodhaguṇaistathā.

ca śrutena ca susampannaḥ sarvaiḥ yodhaguṇaiḥ tathā

5. Duryodhana said: Bhishma was the commander of the army, highly accomplished in age, valor, and learning, as well as all other warrior qualities.
तेनातियशसा कर्ण घ्नता शत्रुगणान्मम ।
सुयुद्धेन दशाहानि पालिताः स्मो महात्मना ॥६॥
6. tenātiyaśasā karṇa ghnatā śatrugaṇānmama ,
suyuddhena daśāhāni pālitāḥ smo mahātmanā.
6. tena atiyaśasā karṇa ghnatā śatrugaṇān mama
suyuddhena daśa ahāni pālitāḥ smaḥ mahātmanā
6. karṇa mama śatrugaṇān ghnatā tena atiyaśasā
mahātmanā suyuddhena daśa ahāni pālitāḥ smaḥ
6. O Karna, that highly renowned and great-souled Bhishma, by slaying my hordes of enemies, protected us for ten days with his excellent warfare.
तस्मिन्नसुकरं कर्म कृतवत्यास्थिते दिवम् ।
कं नु सेनाप्रणेतारं मन्यसे तदनन्तरम् ॥७॥
7. tasminnasukaraṁ karma kṛtavatyāsthite divam ,
kaṁ nu senāpraṇetāraṁ manyase tadanantaram.
7. tasmin asukaram karma kṛtavati āsthite divam
kam nu senāpraṇetāram manyase tat anantaram
7. tasmin asukaram karma kṛtavati divam āsthite
tat anantaram kam nu senāpraṇetāram manyase
7. Now that he has accomplished an impossible feat and ascended to heaven, whom do you consider the commander of the army after him?
न ऋते नायकं सेना मुहूर्तमपि तिष्ठति ।
आहवेष्वाहवश्रेष्ठ नेतृहीनेव नौर्जले ॥८॥
8. na ṛte nāyakaṁ senā muhūrtamapi tiṣṭhati ,
āhaveṣvāhavaśreṣṭha netṛhīneva naurjale.
8. na ṛte nāyakam senā muhūrtam api tiṣṭhati
āhaveṣu āhavaśreṣṭha netṛhīnā iva nauḥ jale
8. āhavaśreṣṭha,
senā nāyakam ṛte muhūrtam api na tiṣṭhati,
jale netṛhīnā nauḥ iva.
8. O foremost among warriors, an army cannot stand even for a moment without a leader, just as a boat in water is helpless without a helmsman.
यथा ह्यकर्णधारा नौ रथश्चासारथिर्यथा ।
द्रवेद्यथेष्टं तद्वत्स्यादृते सेनापतिं बलम् ॥९॥
9. yathā hyakarṇadhārā nau rathaścāsārathiryathā ,
dravedyatheṣṭaṁ tadvatsyādṛte senāpatiṁ balam.
9. yathā hi akarṇadhārā nauḥ rathaḥ ca asārathiḥ yathā
dravet yatheṣṭam tadvat syāt ṛte senāpatim balam
9. hi,
yathā akarṇadhārā nauḥ ca asārathiḥ rathaḥ yathā yatheṣṭam dravet,
tadvat senāpatim ṛte balam syāt.
9. Indeed, just as a boat without a helmsman and a chariot without a charioteer would drift haphazardly, so too would an army be without a commander.
स भवान्वीक्ष्य सर्वेषु मामकेषु महात्मसु ।
पश्य सेनापतिं युक्तमनु शांतनवादिह ॥१०॥
10. sa bhavānvīkṣya sarveṣu māmakeṣu mahātmasu ,
paśya senāpatiṁ yuktamanu śāṁtanavādiha.
10. saḥ bhavān vīkṣya sarveṣu māmakesu mahātmasu
paśya senāpatim yuktam anu śāntanavāt iha
10. saḥ bhavān,
sarveṣu māmakesu mahātmasu vīkṣya,
iha śāntanavāt anu yuktam senāpatim paśya.
10. Therefore, O venerable one, considering all these great-souled warriors among my forces, choose a suitable commander here, in succession to Śāntanu's son (Bhīṣma).
यं हि सेनाप्रणेतारं भवान्वक्ष्यति संयुगे ।
तं वयं सहिताः सर्वे प्रकरिष्याम मारिष ॥११॥
11. yaṁ hi senāpraṇetāraṁ bhavānvakṣyati saṁyuge ,
taṁ vayaṁ sahitāḥ sarve prakariṣyāma māriṣa.
11. yam hi senāpraṇetāram bhavān vakṣyati saṃyuge
tam vayam sahitāḥ sarve prakariṣyāma māriṣa
11. māriṣa,
hi yam senāpraṇetāram bhavān saṃyuge vakṣyati,
tam vayam sarve sahitāḥ prakariṣyāma.
11. Indeed, O respected one, whomsoever you shall declare as the commander of the army for this battle, him we all, united, shall appoint.
कर्ण उवाच ।
सर्व एव महात्मान इमे पुरुषसत्तमाः ।
सेनापतित्वमर्हन्ति नात्र कार्या विचारणा ॥१२॥
12. karṇa uvāca ,
sarva eva mahātmāna ime puruṣasattamāḥ ,
senāpatitvamarhanti nātra kāryā vicāraṇā.
12. karṇaḥ uvāca | sarve eva mahātmānaḥ ime puruṣasattamāḥ
| senāpatitvam arhanti na atra kāryā vicāraṇā
12. karṇaḥ uvāca sarve eva ime mahātmānaḥ puruṣasattamāḥ
senāpatitvam arhanti atra vicāraṇā na kāryā
12. Karna said: All these great-souled men, the best among men, are indeed worthy of the position of commander-in-chief. There should be no deliberation on this matter.
कुलसंहननज्ञानैर्बलविक्रमबुद्धिभिः ।
युक्ताः कृतज्ञा ह्रीमन्त आहवेष्वनिवर्तिनः ॥१३॥
13. kulasaṁhananajñānairbalavikramabuddhibhiḥ ,
yuktāḥ kṛtajñā hrīmanta āhaveṣvanivartinaḥ.
13. kulasamhananajñānaiḥ balavikramabuddhibhiḥ |
yuktāḥ kṛtajñāḥ hrīmantaḥ āhaveṣu anivartinaḥ
13. (te) kulasamhananajñānaiḥ balavikramabuddhibhiḥ yuktāḥ,
kṛtajñāḥ,
hrīmantaḥ,
āhaveṣu anivartinaḥ ca (santi)
13. They are endowed with noble lineage, strong physiques, knowledge, power, valor, intelligence; they are grateful, modest, and do not retreat from battles.
युगपन्न तु ते शक्याः कर्तुं सर्वे पुरःसराः ।
एक एवात्र कर्तव्यो यस्मिन्वैशेषिका गुणाः ॥१४॥
14. yugapanna tu te śakyāḥ kartuṁ sarve puraḥsarāḥ ,
eka evātra kartavyo yasminvaiśeṣikā guṇāḥ.
14. yugapat nu tu te śakyāḥ kartum sarve puraḥsarāḥ
| ekaḥ eva atra kartavyaḥ yasmin vaiśeṣikāḥ guṇāḥ
14. tu yugapat nu te sarve puraḥsarāḥ kartum na śakyāḥ yasmin vaiśeṣikāḥ guṇāḥ (santi),
atra ekaḥ eva kartavyaḥ
14. But it is not possible to make all of them leaders simultaneously. Only one among them should be appointed here, in whom special qualities reside.
अन्योन्यस्पर्धिनां तेषां यद्येकं सत्करिष्यसि ।
शेषा विमनसो व्यक्तं न योत्स्यन्ते हि भारत ॥१५॥
15. anyonyaspardhināṁ teṣāṁ yadyekaṁ satkariṣyasi ,
śeṣā vimanaso vyaktaṁ na yotsyante hi bhārata.
15. anyonyaspardhinām teṣām yadi ekam satkariṣyasi |
śeṣāḥ vimanasaḥ vyaktam na yotsyante hi bhārata
15. bhārata,
yadi anyonyaspardhinām teṣām ekam (tvam) satkariṣyasi,
hi śeṣāḥ vyaktam vimanasaḥ (bhaviṣyanti) na yotsyante
15. If you honor only one of them, who are rivals to one another, then the remaining ones will clearly become displeased and will not fight, O Bhārata.
अयं तु सर्वयोधानामाचार्यः स्थविरो गुरुः ।
युक्तः सेनापतिः कर्तुं द्रोणः शस्त्रभृतां वरः ॥१६॥
16. ayaṁ tu sarvayodhānāmācāryaḥ sthaviro guruḥ ,
yuktaḥ senāpatiḥ kartuṁ droṇaḥ śastrabhṛtāṁ varaḥ.
16. ayam tu sarvayodhānām ācāryaḥ sthaviraḥ guruḥ
yuktaḥ senāpatiḥ kartum droṇaḥ śastrabhṛtām varaḥ
16. ayam droṇaḥ tu sarvayodhānām sthaviraḥ guruḥ
ācāryaḥ śastrabhṛtām varaḥ senāpatiḥ kartum yuktaḥ
16. But this Drona, the elderly and venerable preceptor (guru) of all warriors, and the best among weapon-bearers, is truly fit to be made the commander.
को हि तिष्ठति दुर्धर्षे द्रोणे ब्रह्मविदुत्तमे ।
सेनापतिः स्यादन्योऽस्माच्छुक्राङ्गिरसदर्शनात् ॥१७॥
17. ko hi tiṣṭhati durdharṣe droṇe brahmaviduttame ,
senāpatiḥ syādanyo'smācchukrāṅgirasadarśanāt.
17. kaḥ hi tiṣṭhati durdharṣe droṇe brahmaviduttame
senāpatiḥ syāt anyaḥ asmāt śukrāṅgirasadarśanāt
17. hi kaḥ anyaḥ asmāt durdharṣe droṇe brahmaviduttame
śukrāṅgirasadarśanāt senāpatiḥ syāt tiṣṭhati
17. Indeed, who else could serve as commander in the presence of this formidable Drona, the foremost among the knowers of brahman, whose appearance rivals that of Shukra and Angiras?
न च स ह्यस्ति ते योधः सर्वराजसु भारत ।
यो द्रोणं समरे यान्तं नानुयास्यति संयुगे ॥१८॥
18. na ca sa hyasti te yodhaḥ sarvarājasu bhārata ,
yo droṇaṁ samare yāntaṁ nānuyāsyati saṁyuge.
18. na ca saḥ hi asti te yodhaḥ sarvarājasu bhārata
yaḥ droṇam samare yāntam na anuyāsyati saṃyuge
18. bhārata na ca hi te sarvarājasu saḥ yodhaḥ asti
yaḥ samare saṃyuge yāntam droṇam na anuyāsyati
18. Indeed, O Bharata, there is no warrior among all the kings in your army who would not follow Drona when he advances in battle, in combat.
एष सेनाप्रणेतॄणामेष शस्त्रभृतामपि ।
एष बुद्धिमतां चैव श्रेष्ठो राजन्गुरुश्च ते ॥१९॥
19. eṣa senāpraṇetṝṇāmeṣa śastrabhṛtāmapi ,
eṣa buddhimatāṁ caiva śreṣṭho rājanguruśca te.
19. eṣaḥ senāpraṇetṝṇām eṣaḥ śastrabhṛtām api eṣaḥ
buddhimatām ca eva śreṣṭhaḥ rājan guruḥ ca te
19. rājan eṣaḥ senāpraṇetṝṇām eṣaḥ śastrabhṛtām api
ca eṣaḥ buddhimatām eva śreṣṭhaḥ ca te guruḥ
19. This Drona is among the foremost leaders of armies, and indeed, among all weapon-bearers. Furthermore, O King, he is the best among the intelligent and your preceptor (guru).
एवं दुर्योधनाचार्यमाशु सेनापतिं कुरु ।
जिगीषन्तोऽसुरान्संख्ये कार्त्तिकेयमिवामराः ॥२०॥
20. evaṁ duryodhanācāryamāśu senāpatiṁ kuru ,
jigīṣanto'surānsaṁkhye kārttikeyamivāmarāḥ.
20. evam duryodhanācāryam āśu senāpatim kuru
jigīṣantaḥ asurān saṅkhye kārttikeyam iva amarāḥ
20. amarāḥ jigīṣantaḥ asurān saṅkhye kārttikeyam
iva evam duryodhanācāryam āśu senāpatim kuru
20. Thus, quickly appoint Duryodhana's preceptor as the commander of the army, just as the immortal gods (amarāḥ), desiring to conquer the Asuras, appointed Kartikeya in battle.
संजय उवाच ।
कर्णस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा राजा दुर्योधनस्तदा ।
सेनामध्यगतं द्रोणमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२१॥
21. saṁjaya uvāca ,
karṇasya vacanaṁ śrutvā rājā duryodhanastadā ,
senāmadhyagataṁ droṇamidaṁ vacanamabravīt.
21. sañjayaḥ uvāca karṇasya vacanam śrutvā rājā duryodhanaḥ
tadā senāmadhyagatam droṇam idam vacanam abravīt
21. sañjayaḥ uvāca tadā rājā duryodhanaḥ karṇasya vacanam
śrutvā senāmadhyagatam droṇam idam vacanam abravīt
21. Sanjaya said: Then King Duryodhana, having heard Karna's words, spoke this statement to Drona, who was standing amidst the army.
वर्णश्रैष्ठ्यात्कुलोत्पत्त्या श्रुतेन वयसा धिया ।
वीर्याद्दाक्ष्यादधृष्यत्वादर्थज्ञानान्नयाज्जयात् ॥२२॥
22. varṇaśraiṣṭhyātkulotpattyā śrutena vayasā dhiyā ,
vīryāddākṣyādadhṛṣyatvādarthajñānānnayājjayāt.
22. varṇaśraiṣṭhyāt kulotpattiā śrutena vayasā dhiyā
vīryāt dākṣyāt adhṛṣyatvāt arthajñānāt nayāt jayāt
22. varṇaśraiṣṭhyāt kulotpattiā śrutena vayasā dhiyā
vīryāt dākṣyāt adhṛṣyatvāt arthajñānāt nayāt jayāt
22. By virtue of your supreme social standing (varṇaśraiṣṭhya), noble birth, extensive learning, venerable age, keen intellect, prowess, skill, invincibility, profound understanding of affairs, sound policy, and consistent victories.
तपसा च कृतज्ञत्वाद्वृद्धः सर्वगुणैरपि ।
युक्तो भवत्समो गोप्ता राज्ञामन्यो न विद्यते ॥२३॥
23. tapasā ca kṛtajñatvādvṛddhaḥ sarvaguṇairapi ,
yukto bhavatsamo goptā rājñāmanyo na vidyate.
23. tapasā ca kṛtajñatvāt vṛddhaḥ sarvaguṇaiḥ api
yuktaḥ bhavatsamaḥ goptā rājñām anyaḥ na vidyate
23. tapasā ca kṛtajñatvāt sarvaguṇaiḥ api vṛddhaḥ
yuktaḥ bhavatsamaḥ goptā rājñām anyaḥ na vidyate
23. And by his spiritual fervor (tapas) and deep sense of gratitude (kṛtajñatva), venerable and endowed with all good qualities, there is no other protector of kings equal to you.
स भवान्पातु नः सर्वान्विबुधानिव वासवः ।
भवन्नेत्राः पराञ्जेतुमिच्छामो द्विजसत्तम ॥२४॥
24. sa bhavānpātu naḥ sarvānvibudhāniva vāsavaḥ ,
bhavannetrāḥ parāñjetumicchāmo dvijasattama.
24. saḥ bhavān pātu naḥ sarvān vibudhān iva vāsavaḥ
bhavatnetrāḥ parān jetum icchāmaḥ dvijasattama
24. dvijasattama saḥ bhavān vāsavaḥ iva sarvān
naḥ pātu bhavatnetrāḥ parān jetum icchāmaḥ
24. O best among the twice-born (dvija-sattama), may that revered you protect us all, just as Indra protects the gods. We wish to conquer our enemies with you as our leader.
रुद्राणामिव कापाली वसूनामिव पावकः ।
कुबेर इव यक्षाणां मरुतामिव वासवः ॥२५॥
25. rudrāṇāmiva kāpālī vasūnāmiva pāvakaḥ ,
kubera iva yakṣāṇāṁ marutāmiva vāsavaḥ.
25. rudrāṇām iva kāpālī vasūnām iva pāvakaḥ
kuberaḥ iva yakṣāṇām marutām iva vāsavaḥ
25. rudrāṇām kāpālī iva,
vasūnām pāvakaḥ iva,
yakṣāṇām kuberaḥ iva,
marutām vāsavaḥ iva (saḥ bhavatu)
25. (May you be) like Kapāli (Śiva) among the Rudras, like Pāvaka (Agni) among the Vasus, like Kubera among the Yakṣas, and like Vāsava (Indra) among the Maruts.
वसिष्ठ इव विप्राणां तेजसामिव भास्करः ।
पितॄणामिव धर्मोऽथ आदित्यानामिवाम्बुराट् ॥२६॥
26. vasiṣṭha iva viprāṇāṁ tejasāmiva bhāskaraḥ ,
pitṝṇāmiva dharmo'tha ādityānāmivāmburāṭ.
26. vasiṣṭhaḥ iva viprāṇām tejasām iva bhāskaraḥ
pitṝṇām iva dharmaḥ atha ādityānām iva amburāṭ
26. viprāṇām vasiṣṭhaḥ iva,
tejasām bhāskaraḥ iva,
pitṝṇām dharmaḥ iva atha,
ādityānām amburāṭ iva (saḥ bhavatu)
26. (May you be) like Vasiṣṭha among the Brahmins (vipra-s), like Bhāskara (the Sun) among the luminous objects, like (natural law) (dharma) among the ancestors (pitṛ-s), and like Amburāṭ (Varuṇa) among the Ādityas.
नक्षत्राणामिव शशी दितिजानामिवोशनाः ।
श्रेष्ठः सेनाप्रणेतॄणां स नः सेनापतिर्भव ॥२७॥
27. nakṣatrāṇāmiva śaśī ditijānāmivośanāḥ ,
śreṣṭhaḥ senāpraṇetṝṇāṁ sa naḥ senāpatirbhava.
27. nakṣatrāṇām iva śaśī ditijānām iva uśanāḥ
śreṣṭhaḥ senāpranetṝṇām saḥ naḥ senāpatiḥ bhava
27. nakṣatrāṇām śaśī iva,
ditijānām uśanāḥ iva,
senāpranetṝṇām śreṣṭhaḥ,
saḥ naḥ senāpatiḥ bhava
27. (May you be) like Śaśī (the Moon) among the constellations, like Uśanas (Śukra) among the Dānavas, and the best among military commanders. May that (person) be our commander-in-chief (senāpati).
अक्षौहिण्यो दशैका च वशगाः सन्तु तेऽनघ ।
ताभिः शत्रून्प्रतिव्यूह्य जहीन्द्रो दानवानिव ॥२८॥
28. akṣauhiṇyo daśaikā ca vaśagāḥ santu te'nagha ,
tābhiḥ śatrūnprativyūhya jahīndro dānavāniva.
28. akṣauhiṇyaḥ daśa ekā ca vaśagāḥ santu te anagha
tābhiḥ śatrūn prativyūhya jahi indraḥ dānavān iva
28. anagha te daśa ekā akṣauhiṇyaḥ ca vaśagāḥ santu
tābhiḥ śatrūn prativyūhya indraḥ dānavān iva jahi
28. O sinless one, let these eleven divisions of the army (akṣauhiṇīs) be under your command. With them, after arraying your forces against the enemies, conquer them, just as Indra conquered the Dānavas.
प्रयातु नो भवानग्रे देवानामिव पावकिः ।
अनुयास्यामहे त्वाजौ सौरभेया इवर्षभम् ॥२९॥
29. prayātu no bhavānagre devānāmiva pāvakiḥ ,
anuyāsyāmahe tvājau saurabheyā ivarṣabham.
29. prayātu naḥ bhavān agre devānām iva pāvakiḥ
anuyāsyāmahe tvā ājau saurabheyāḥ iva ṛṣabham
29. bhavān naḥ agre pāvakiḥ devānām iva prayātu vayam
tvā ājau saurabheyāḥ ṛṣabham iva anuyāsyāmahe
29. May you go forth as our leader, just as Kārttikeya leads the gods. We will follow you in battle, like cows follow a bull.
उग्रधन्वा महेष्वासो दिव्यं विस्फारयन्धनुः ।
अग्रे भवन्तं दृष्ट्वा नो नार्जुनः प्रसहिष्यते ॥३०॥
30. ugradhanvā maheṣvāso divyaṁ visphārayandhanuḥ ,
agre bhavantaṁ dṛṣṭvā no nārjunaḥ prasahiṣyate.

agre bhavantam dṛṣṭvā naḥ na arjunaḥ prasahiṣyate

30. Seeing you in the vanguard, with your fierce bow and great arrows (or as a great archer), stretching your divine bow, Arjuna will not be able to withstand us.
ध्रुवं युधिष्ठिरं संख्ये सानुबन्धं सबान्धवम् ।
जेष्यामि पुरुषव्याघ्र भवान्सेनापतिर्यदि ॥३१॥
31. dhruvaṁ yudhiṣṭhiraṁ saṁkhye sānubandhaṁ sabāndhavam ,
jeṣyāmi puruṣavyāghra bhavānsenāpatiryadi.
31. dhruvam yudhiṣṭhiram saṃkhye sānubandham sabāndhavam
jeṣyāmi puruṣavyāghra bhavān senāpatiḥ yadi
31. puruṣavyāghra yadi bhavān senāpatiḥ (bhavet) (aham) saṃkhye
sānubandham sabāndhavam yudhiṣṭhiram dhruvam jeṣyāmi
31. O tiger among men, I will certainly defeat Yudhishthira, along with his followers and relatives, in battle, if you become the commander-in-chief.
एवमुक्ते ततो द्रोणे जयेत्यूचुर्नराधिपाः ।
सिंहनादेन महता हर्षयन्तस्तवात्मजम् ॥३२॥
32. evamukte tato droṇe jayetyūcurnarādhipāḥ ,
siṁhanādena mahatā harṣayantastavātmajam.
32. evam ukte tataḥ droṇe jaya iti ūcuḥ narādhipāḥ
siṃhanādena mahatā harṣayantaḥ tava ātmajam
32. droṇe evam ukte tataḥ narādhipāḥ tava ātmajam
harṣayantaḥ mahatā siṃhanādena jaya iti ūcuḥ
32. When Drona had spoken thus, the kings, gladdening your son (ātmaja), then exclaimed 'Victory!' with a great lion's roar.
सैनिकाश्च मुदा युक्ता वर्धयन्ति द्विजोत्तमम् ।
दुर्योधनं पुरस्कृत्य प्रार्थयन्तो महद्यशः ॥३३॥
33. sainikāśca mudā yuktā vardhayanti dvijottamam ,
duryodhanaṁ puraskṛtya prārthayanto mahadyaśaḥ.
33. sainikāḥ ca mudā yuktāḥ vardhayanti dvijottamam
duryodhanam puraskṛtya prārthayantaḥ mahat yaśaḥ
33. ca sainikāḥ mudā yuktāḥ duryodhanam puraskṛtya
mahat yaśaḥ prārthayantaḥ dvijottamam vardhayanti
33. And the soldiers, filled with joy and making Duryodhana their leader, glorified Drona, the best of Brahmins (dvijottama), desiring great fame.
द्रोण उवाच ।
वेदं षडङ्गं वेदाहमर्थविद्यां च मानवीम् ।
त्रैयम्बकमथेष्वस्त्रमस्त्राणि विविधानि च ॥३४॥
34. droṇa uvāca ,
vedaṁ ṣaḍaṅgaṁ vedāhamarthavidyāṁ ca mānavīm ,
traiyambakamatheṣvastramastrāṇi vividhāni ca.
34. droṇaḥ uvāca vedam ṣaḍaṅgam veda aham arthavidyām ca
mānavīm traiyambakam atha iṣu astram astrāṇi vividhāni ca
34. droṇaḥ uvāca aham vedam ṣaḍaṅgam ca mānavīm arthavidyām
atha traiyambakam iṣu astram vividhāni astrāṇi ca veda
34. Drona said: 'I know the Veda, along with its six ancillary branches, and the human science of polity, as well as the Trayambaka missile (astra) and various other weapons (astra).'
ये चाप्युक्ता मयि गुणा भवद्भिर्जयकाङ्क्षिभिः ।
चिकीर्षुस्तानहं सत्यान्योधयिष्यामि पाण्डवान् ॥३५॥
35. ye cāpyuktā mayi guṇā bhavadbhirjayakāṅkṣibhiḥ ,
cikīrṣustānahaṁ satyānyodhayiṣyāmi pāṇḍavān.
35. ye ca api uktāḥ mayi guṇāḥ bhavadbhiḥ jayakāṅkṣibhiḥ
cikīrṣuḥ tān aham satyān yodhayiṣyāmi pāṇḍavān
35. ca ye guṇāḥ api bhavadbhiḥ jayakāṅkṣibhiḥ mayi
uktāḥ aham tān satyān cikīrṣuḥ pāṇḍavān yodhayiṣyāmi
35. And these qualities which you, desirous of victory, have attributed to me – I, desiring to make those (qualities) true, will fight the Pāṇḍavas.
संजय उवाच ।
स एवमभ्यनुज्ञातश्चक्रे सेनापतिं ततः ।
द्रोणं तव सुतो राजन्विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा ॥३६॥
36. saṁjaya uvāca ,
sa evamabhyanujñātaścakre senāpatiṁ tataḥ ,
droṇaṁ tava suto rājanvidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā.
36. saṃjaya uvāca saḥ evam abhyanujñātaḥ cakre senāpatim
tataḥ droṇam tava sutaḥ rājan vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā
36. saṃjaya uvāca rājan tava sutaḥ saḥ evam abhyanujñātaḥ
tataḥ droṇam senāpatim vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā cakre
36. Saṃjaya said: O King, your son (Duryodhana), thus permitted (by Bhishma), then made Droṇa the commander-in-chief, following the procedures prescribed by sacred law (dharma).
अथाभिषिषिचुर्द्रोणं दुर्योधनमुखा नृपाः ।
सेनापत्ये यथा स्कन्दं पुरा शक्रमुखाः सुराः ॥३७॥
37. athābhiṣiṣicurdroṇaṁ duryodhanamukhā nṛpāḥ ,
senāpatye yathā skandaṁ purā śakramukhāḥ surāḥ.
37. atha abhisiṣicuḥ droṇam duryodhanamukhāḥ nṛpāḥ
senāpatye yathā skandam purā śakramukhāḥ surāḥ
37. atha duryodhanamukhāḥ nṛpāḥ senāpatye droṇam abhisiṣicuḥ
yathā purā śakramukhāḥ surāḥ skandam (abhisiṣicuḥ)
37. Then, the kings led by Duryodhana consecrated Droṇa to the position of commander-in-chief, just as formerly the gods led by Indra (Śakra) consecrated Skanda.
ततो वादित्रघोषेण सह पुंसां महास्वनैः ।
प्रादुरासीत्कृते द्रोणे हर्षः सेनापतौ तदा ॥३८॥
38. tato vāditraghoṣeṇa saha puṁsāṁ mahāsvanaiḥ ,
prādurāsītkṛte droṇe harṣaḥ senāpatau tadā.
38. tataḥ vāditraghoṣeṇa saha puṃsām mahāsvanaiḥ
prāduḥ āsīt kṛte droṇe harṣaḥ senāpatou tadā
38. tadā tataḥ droṇe senāpatou kṛte vāditraghoṣeṇa saha
puṃsām mahāsvanaiḥ (sahitaḥ) harṣaḥ prādurāsīt
38. Then, when Droṇa was made commander-in-chief, a great joy arose, accompanied by the sounds of musical instruments and the loud roars of men.
ततः पुण्याहघोषेण स्वस्तिवादस्वनेन च ।
संस्तवैर्गीतशब्दैश्च सूतमागधबन्दिनाम् ॥३९॥
39. tataḥ puṇyāhaghoṣeṇa svastivādasvanena ca ,
saṁstavairgītaśabdaiśca sūtamāgadhabandinām.
39. tataḥ puṇyāhaghoṣeṇa svastivādasvanena ca
saṃstavaiḥ gītaśabdaiḥ ca sūtamāgadhabandinām
39. tataḥ sūtamāgadhabandinām puṇyāhaghoṣeṇa ca svastivādasvanena
ca saṃstavaiḥ ca gītaśabdaiḥ (harṣaḥ prādurāsīt)
39. (And this joy was accompanied) by the sounds of auspicious day proclamations, by benedictory pronouncements, and by the praises and songs of the charioteers (sūta), bards (māgadha), and panegyrists (bandin).
जयशब्दैर्द्विजाग्र्याणां सुभगानर्तितैस्तथा ।
सत्कृत्य विधिवद्द्रोणं जितान्मन्यन्त पाण्डवान् ॥४०॥
40. jayaśabdairdvijāgryāṇāṁ subhagānartitaistathā ,
satkṛtya vidhivaddroṇaṁ jitānmanyanta pāṇḍavān.
40. jayaśabdaiḥ dvijāgryāṇām subhagānartitaiḥ tathā
satkṛtya vidhivat droṇam jitān manyanta pāṇḍavān
40. dvijāgryāṇām jayaśabdaiḥ tathā subhagānartitaiḥ droṇam vidhivat satkṛtya,
pāṇḍavān jitān manyanta
40. The foremost brahmins (dvija) honored Drona with cries of victory and auspicious dances, considering the Pandavas to be defeated.
