वैशंपायन उवाच ।
गन्धर्वैस्तु महाराज भग्ने कर्णे महारथे ।
संप्राद्रवच्चमूः सर्वा धार्तराष्ट्रस्य पश्यतः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
gandharvaistu mahārāja bhagne karṇe mahārathe ,
saṁprādravaccamūḥ sarvā dhārtarāṣṭrasya paśyataḥ.
1. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca gandharvaiḥ tu mahārāja bhagne karṇe
mahārathe samprādravat camūḥ sarvā dhārtarāṣṭrasya paśyataḥ
1. Vaiśampāyana said: 'O great king (mahārāja), when the great charioteer Karṇa had his chariot shattered by the Gandharvas, the entire army of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons fled while [Duryodhana] was watching.'
तान्दृष्ट्वा द्रवतः सर्वान्धार्तराष्ट्रान्पराङ्मुखान् ।
दुर्योधनो महाराज नासीत्तत्र पराङ्मुखः ॥२॥
2. tāndṛṣṭvā dravataḥ sarvāndhārtarāṣṭrānparāṅmukhān ,
duryodhano mahārāja nāsīttatra parāṅmukhaḥ.
2. tān dṛṣṭvā dravataḥ sarvān dhārtarāṣṭrān parāṅmukhān
duryodhanaḥ mahārāja na āsīt tatra parāṅmukhaḥ
2. Having seen all those sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra fleeing and turning their backs, Duryodhana, O great king (mahārāja), did not turn his back there.
तामापतन्तीं संप्रेक्ष्य गन्धर्वाणां महाचमूम् ।
महता शरवर्षेण सोऽभ्यवर्षदरिंदमः ॥३॥
3. tāmāpatantīṁ saṁprekṣya gandharvāṇāṁ mahācamūm ,
mahatā śaravarṣeṇa so'bhyavarṣadariṁdamaḥ.
3. tām āpatantīm saṃprekṣya gandharvāṇām mahācamūm
mahatā śaravarṣeṇa saḥ abhyavarṣat ariṃdamaḥ
3. Seeing that great army of Gandharvas approaching, the subduer of enemies showered them with a mighty volley of arrows.
अचिन्त्य शरवर्षं तु गन्धर्वास्तस्य तं रथम् ।
दुर्योधनं जिघांसन्तः समन्तात्पर्यवारयन् ॥४॥
4. acintya śaravarṣaṁ tu gandharvāstasya taṁ ratham ,
duryodhanaṁ jighāṁsantaḥ samantātparyavārayan.
4. acintyam śaravarṣam tu gandharvāḥ tasya tam ratham
duryodhanam jighāṃsantaḥ samantāt paryavārayan
4. But the Gandharvas, intent on killing Duryodhana, surrounded his chariot from all sides, undeterred by the immense shower of arrows.
युगमीषां वरूथं च तथैव ध्वजसारथी ।
अश्वांस्त्रिवेणुं तल्पं च तिलशोऽभ्यहनन्रथम् ॥५॥
5. yugamīṣāṁ varūthaṁ ca tathaiva dhvajasārathī ,
aśvāṁstriveṇuṁ talpaṁ ca tilaśo'bhyahananratham.
5. yugam īṣām varūtham ca tathā eva dhvajasārathī
aśvān triveṇum talpam ca tilaśaḥ abhyahanan ratham
5. They shattered the chariot's yoke, pole, and body, and similarly, the banner, the charioteer, the horses, the three poles (of the chariot), and the seat, into tiny pieces (tilaśaḥ).
दुर्योधनं चित्रसेनो विरथं पतितं भुवि ।
अभिद्रुत्य महाबाहुर्जीवग्राहमथाग्रहीत् ॥६॥
6. duryodhanaṁ citraseno virathaṁ patitaṁ bhuvi ,
abhidrutya mahābāhurjīvagrāhamathāgrahīt.
6. duryodhanam citrasenaḥ viratham patitam bhuvi
abhidrutya mahābāhuḥ jīvaghrāham atha agrahīt
6. Then the mighty-armed Chitrasena, rushing towards Duryodhana who had fallen chariotless to the ground, captured him alive.
तस्मिन्गृहीते राजेन्द्र स्थितं दुःशासनं रथे ।
पर्यगृह्णन्त गन्धर्वाः परिवार्य समन्ततः ॥७॥
7. tasmingṛhīte rājendra sthitaṁ duḥśāsanaṁ rathe ,
paryagṛhṇanta gandharvāḥ parivārya samantataḥ.
7. tasmin gṛhīte rājendra sthitam duḥśāsanam rathe
paryagṛhṇanta gandharvāḥ parivārya samantataḥ
7. O best of kings, when he (Duryodhana) was captured, the Gandharvas surrounded Duśśāsana, who was standing in his chariot, encircling him from all sides.
विविंशतिं चित्रसेनमादायान्ये प्रदुद्रुवुः ।
विन्दानुविन्दावपरे राजदारांश्च सर्वशः ॥८॥
8. viviṁśatiṁ citrasenamādāyānye pradudruvuḥ ,
vindānuvindāvapare rājadārāṁśca sarvaśaḥ.
8. viviṃśatim citrasenam ādāya anye pradudruvuḥ
vinda-anuvindau apare rājadārān ca sarvaśaḥ
8. Some (Gandharvas), having seized Viviṃśati and Citrasena, departed, while others (Gandharvas) captured Vinda and Anuvinda, as well as all the royal women.
सैन्यास्तु धार्तराष्ट्रस्य गन्धर्वैः समभिद्रुताः ।
पूर्वं प्रभग्नैः सहिताः पाण्डवानभ्ययुस्तदा ॥९॥
9. sainyāstu dhārtarāṣṭrasya gandharvaiḥ samabhidrutāḥ ,
pūrvaṁ prabhagnaiḥ sahitāḥ pāṇḍavānabhyayustadā.
9. sainyāḥ tu dhārtarāṣṭrasya gandharvaiḥ samabhidrutāḥ
pūrvam prabhagnaiḥ sahitāḥ pāṇḍavān abhyayuḥ tadā
9. But the forces of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son, having been assailed by the Gandharvas, along with those who had been previously routed, then approached the Pāṇḍavas (for help).
शकटापणवेश्याश्च यानयुग्यं च सर्वशः ।
शरणं पाण्डवाञ्जग्मुर्ह्रियमाणे महीपतौ ॥१०॥
10. śakaṭāpaṇaveśyāśca yānayugyaṁ ca sarvaśaḥ ,
śaraṇaṁ pāṇḍavāñjagmurhriyamāṇe mahīpatau.
10. śakaṭāpaṇaveśyāḥ ca yānayugyam ca sarvaśaḥ
śaraṇam pāṇḍavān jagmuḥ hriyamāṇe mahīpatau
10. And all the carts, shops, and courtesans, as well as all the vehicles and draft animals, sought refuge with the Pāṇḍavas, while the king (Duryodhana) was being carried away.
प्रियदर्शनो महाबाहुर्धार्तराष्ट्रो महाबलः ।
गन्धर्वैर्ह्रियते राजा पार्थास्तमनुधावत ॥११॥
11. priyadarśano mahābāhurdhārtarāṣṭro mahābalaḥ ,
gandharvairhriyate rājā pārthāstamanudhāvata.
11. priyadarśanaḥ mahābāhuḥ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ mahābalaḥ
gandharvaiḥ hriyate rājā pārthāḥ tam anudhāvata
11. The handsome, mighty-armed, greatly powerful son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the king, is being carried away by the Gandharvas. O Pārthas, pursue him!
दुःशासनो दुर्विषहो दुर्मुखो दुर्जयस्तथा ।
बद्ध्वा ह्रियन्ते गन्धर्वै राजदाराश्च सर्वशः ॥१२॥
12. duḥśāsano durviṣaho durmukho durjayastathā ,
baddhvā hriyante gandharvai rājadārāśca sarvaśaḥ.
12. duḥśāsanaḥ durviṣahaḥ durmukhaḥ durjayaḥ tathā
baddhvā hriyante gandharvaiḥ rājadārāḥ ca sarvaśaḥ
12. Duḥśāsana, along with Durviṣaha, Durmukha, and Durjaya, as well as all the royal wives, are being taken away by the Gandharvas after being bound.
इति दुर्योधनामात्याः क्रोशन्तो राजगृद्धिनः ।
आर्ता दीनस्वराः सर्वे युधिष्ठिरमुपागमन् ॥१३॥
13. iti duryodhanāmātyāḥ krośanto rājagṛddhinaḥ ,
ārtā dīnasvarāḥ sarve yudhiṣṭhiramupāgaman.
13. iti duryodhanāmātyāḥ krośantaḥ rājagṛddhinaḥ
ārtāḥ dīnasvarāḥ sarve yudhiṣṭhiram upāgaman
13. Thus, all of Duryodhana's ministers, ambitious for the kingdom, distressed, and crying out with piteous voices, approached Yudhiṣṭhira.
तांस्तथा व्यथितान्दीनान्भिक्षमाणान्युधिष्ठिरम् ।
वृद्धान्दुर्योधनामात्यान्भीमसेनोऽभ्यभाषत ॥१४॥
14. tāṁstathā vyathitāndīnānbhikṣamāṇānyudhiṣṭhiram ,
vṛddhānduryodhanāmātyānbhīmaseno'bhyabhāṣata.
14. tān tathā vyathitān dīnān bhikṣamāṇān yudhiṣṭhiram
vṛddhān duryodhanāmātyān bhīmasenaḥ abhyabhāṣata
14. Bhīmasena then addressed those distressed, wretched, aged ministers of Duryodhana, who were thus imploring Yudhiṣṭhira.
अन्यथा वर्तमानानामर्थो जातोऽयमन्यथा ।
अस्माभिर्यदनुष्ठेयं गन्धर्वैस्तदनुष्ठितम् ॥१५॥
15. anyathā vartamānānāmartho jāto'yamanyathā ,
asmābhiryadanuṣṭheyaṁ gandharvaistadanuṣṭhitam.
15. anyathā vartamānānām arthaḥ jātaḥ ayam anyathā |
asmābhiḥ yat anuṣṭheyam gandharvaiḥ tat anuṣṭhitam
15. This matter has turned out differently for those who were acting improperly. What we were supposed to do has been accomplished by the Gandharvas.
दुर्मन्त्रितमिदं तात राज्ञो दुर्द्यूतदेविनः ।
द्वेष्टारमन्ये क्लीबस्य पातयन्तीति नः श्रुतम् ॥१६॥
16. durmantritamidaṁ tāta rājño durdyūtadevinaḥ ,
dveṣṭāramanye klībasya pātayantīti naḥ śrutam.
16. durmantritam idam tāta rājñaḥ durdyūtadevinaḥ |
dveṣṭāram anye klībasya pātayanti iti naḥ śrutam
16. This is ill-advised, dear one, for a king addicted to wicked gambling. We have heard that others cause the enemy of a weak person to fall.
तदिदं कृतं नः प्रत्यक्षं गन्धर्वैरतिमानुषम् ।
दिष्ट्या लोके पुमानस्ति कश्चिदस्मत्प्रिये स्थितः ।
येनास्माकं हृतो भार आसीनानां सुखावहः ॥१७॥
17. tadidaṁ kṛtaṁ naḥ pratyakṣaṁ gandharvairatimānuṣam ,
diṣṭyā loke pumānasti kaścidasmatpriye sthitaḥ ,
yenāsmākaṁ hṛto bhāra āsīnānāṁ sukhāvahaḥ.
17. tat idam kṛtam naḥ pratyakṣam gandharvaiḥ
atimānuṣam | diṣṭyā loke pumān
asti kaścit asmatpriye sthitaḥ | yena
asmākam hṛtaḥ bhāraḥ āsīnānām sukhāvahaḥ
17. This superhuman deed, visible to us, has been performed by the Gandharvas. Fortunately, there is someone in the world who stands for our welfare, and by whom our burden - which had been pleasant for us who were merely sitting - has been taken away.
शीतवातातपसहांस्तपसा चैव कर्शितान् ।
समस्थो विषमस्थान्हि द्रष्टुमिच्छति दुर्मतिः ॥१८॥
18. śītavātātapasahāṁstapasā caiva karśitān ,
samastho viṣamasthānhi draṣṭumicchati durmatiḥ.
18. śītavātātapasahān tapasā ca eva karśitān |
samasthaḥ viṣamasthān hi draṣṭum icchati durmatiḥ
18. The evil-minded person, who is himself in a prosperous state, certainly wishes to see those who endure cold, wind, and sun, and are emaciated by asceticism (tapas), now fallen into adverse circumstances.
अधर्मचारिणस्तस्य कौरव्यस्य दुरात्मनः ।
ये शीलमनुवर्तन्ते ते पश्यन्ति पराभवम् ॥१९॥
19. adharmacāriṇastasya kauravyasya durātmanaḥ ,
ye śīlamanuvartante te paśyanti parābhavam.
19. adharma-cāriṇaḥ tasya kauravyasya durātmanaḥ
ye śīlam anuvartante te paśyanti parābhavam
19. Those who follow the conduct of that evil-minded Kaurava, who practices unrighteousness (adharma), will surely face defeat.
अधर्मो हि कृतस्तेन येनैतदुपशिक्षितम् ।
अनृशंसास्तु कौन्तेयास्तस्याध्यक्षान्ब्रवीमि वः ॥२०॥
20. adharmo hi kṛtastena yenaitadupaśikṣitam ,
anṛśaṁsāstu kaunteyāstasyādhyakṣānbravīmi vaḥ.
20. adharmaḥ hi kṛtaḥ tena yena etat upaśikṣitam
anṛśaṃsāḥ tu kaunteyāḥ tasya adhyakṣān bravīmi vaḥ
20. Indeed, unrighteousness (adharma) was committed by him who instigated this. But, O merciful sons of Kunti, I declare you as his witnesses.
एवं ब्रुवाणं कौन्तेयं भीमसेनममर्षणम् ।
न कालः परुषस्यायमिति राजाभ्यभाषत ॥२१॥
21. evaṁ bruvāṇaṁ kaunteyaṁ bhīmasenamamarṣaṇam ,
na kālaḥ paruṣasyāyamiti rājābhyabhāṣata.
21. evam bruvāṇam kaunteyam bhīmasenam amarṣaṇam
na kālaḥ paruṣasya ayam iti rājā abhyabhāṣata
21. The king addressed Bhimasena, the indignant son of Kunti, who was speaking in this manner, saying: 'This is not the right time for harsh words.'
