Sañjaya said: Then, the intelligent Abhimanyu, his body wounded by arrows, smiled and spoke to Duḥśāsana, who stood before him as an enemy.

Fortunately, I see in battle this haughty enemy who has arrived - harsh, having forsaken his own (dharma) (natural law/righteousness), and prone to insult.

Because in the assembly, while King Dhṛtarāṣṭra was listening, you angered Yudhiṣṭhira, the King of (dharma) (righteousness), with harsh words. And you, maddened by victory, also spoke much nonsense to Bhīma.

This (fate) has now come upon you, resulting from the anger of those great-souled (mahātman) individuals, an anger born from the seizure of my fathers' kingdom by formidable archers.

And you, O evil-minded one, will immediately receive the terrible fruit of unrighteousness (adharma)! Today, I shall be your punisher with arrows, while the entire army looks on.

Thus having spoken, the mighty-armed one, the slayer of enemy warriors, aimed an arrow - one destined to be Duḥśāsana's end - which blazed with the radiance of the fire of dissolution and the wind.

And the hero (Karna) disdainfully pierced Abhimanyu's followers with keen, excellent arrows in the battleground.

24.
But the great-souled Abhimanyu, O King, swiftly desiring Drona (as his target), pierced Karna with seventy-three arrows.

25.
At that time, no one in battle was able to stop Drona, who was shattering the best chariot warriors, just as the wielder of the thunderbolt (Indra) shatters the asuras.

26.
Then Karna, desiring victory and proud among all bow-wielders, struck Saubhadra (Abhimanyu) with hundreds (of arrows), displaying his excellent missiles.

He (Karna), the best among those skilled in weapons, a mighty disciple of Rama, tormented Abhimanyu in battle, who was unconquerable by enemies.

28.
But Saubhadra (Abhimanyu), though thus tormented in battle by Radheya (Karna) with showers of weapons, and resembling an immortal, did not become dejected.

29.
Then, Arjuna's son (Ārjuni) harassed Karna with sharp, stone-sharpened lances (bhallā) that had curved joints, after severing the bows of the heroes. He (Ārjuni) then cut down Karna's standard and bow, making them fall to the ground.

Then, seeing Karna in distress, Karna's son (Karṇādanantaraḥ, likely Vṛṣasena) swiftly approached Abhimanyu (Saubhadra), firmly raising his bow.

31.
Then the Pārthas and their followers shouted loudly, and they played musical instruments and also praised Abhimanyu (Saubhadra).
