1.
Vaiśampāyana said: Then Bhīmasena, having adopted a great resolve with the desire to kill Jarāsandha, spoke to Kṛṣṇa, the delight of the Yadus (yadunandanam).

2.
O Kṛṣṇa, O tiger among the Yadus, this wicked man, with his garment tied around his loins, should not be requested by me even at the cost of my life (prāṇa).

3.
Having been addressed thus, Kṛṣṇa, that tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), then replied to Vṛkodara (Bhīma), urging him on with the desire for Jarāsandha's slaying.

4.
O Bhīma, quickly display to us today against Jarāsandha that supreme divine strength (sattva) which you possess, and also the strength (bala) that belongs to Mātariśvan (Vāyu), your father.

O King, Bhīma, the subduer of enemies (ariṃdama) and immensely powerful (mahābala), having thus been addressed, then lifted up the mighty Jarāsandha and began to whirl him around.

O best of Bharatas, having whirled him around a hundred times with his arms, he then bent and crushed his back, and roared.

While he (Jarāsandha) was being crushed and the Pandava (Bhīmasena) was roaring, there arose a tumultuous sound, terrifying to all creatures.

8.
All the people of Magadha trembled, and the pregnancies of the women miscarried, indeed, due to the roar of Bhīmasena and (the dying cries) of Jarāsandha.

9.
The people of Magadha wondered, 'Has the Himālayan mountain indeed split apart? Is the earth indeed rending?' — hearing Bhīmasena's roar.

10.
Then, at night, the subduers of foes departed, having left that king, who seemed merely asleep but was actually lifeless, at the gate of the royal palace.

11.
Krishna, having yoked Jarāsaṃdha's banner-adorned chariot and mounted the two brothers (Bhima and Arjuna) upon it, then liberated the imprisoned relatives.

12.
Indeed, the kings of the earth, having been liberated (mokṣa) from great fear, approached Krishna – who had acquired precious jewels and was worthy of such royal emblems – and appointed him as their king.

13.
Uninjured, fully armed, and a vanquisher of foes, he (Krishna), along with the kings, mounted that divine chariot and departed from Girivraja.

14.
That famous warrior, who is endowed with brothers, fights like two men, and has Krishna as his charioteer, striking down opponents, is visibly unconquerable by all kings.

15.
That excellent chariot, occupied by the two warriors Bhima and Arjuna, and having Krishna as its charioteer, shone splendidly, unconquerable by all archers.

16.
Indeed, Indra and Vishnu (śakra-viṣṇū) fought in the Tārakā-maya war. Then, Krishna (kṛṣṇa), ascending with Arjuna in that very chariot, went forth.

It was shining like molten gold, adorned with networks of small bells, sounding like the roar of clouds, victorious, and destructive to enemies.

18.
Those foremost among men greatly rejoiced upon obtaining that chariot, by which Indra had once slain ninety Dānavas.

19.
Then, upon seeing the mighty-armed Krishna, who was accompanied by his two brothers and standing on the chariot, the people of Magadha became utterly astonished.

O Bhārata, that chariot, yoked with divine horses and as swift as the wind, shone with immense splendor when Krishna took his place upon it.

On that excellent chariot, a glorious banner, divinely established and unobstructed, shone with the splendor of a rainbow (Indra's bow), visible from a distance of a Yojana.

Kṛṣṇa then thought of Garuḍa, and Garuḍa immediately approached. In that very moment, he was elevated by Kṛṣṇa, like a monumental sacrificial post (caityayūpa).

23.
Garuḍa, the devourer of serpents (pannagāśana), stood on that excellent chariot. He was accompanied by attendants (bhūta) with gaping mouths and mighty roars, and by the inhabitants of his standard.

24.
Indeed, he shone with exceeding splendor, difficult for (all) beings (bhūta) to behold, just like the sun (āditya) at midday, enveloped in a thousand rays.

25.
O king (rājan), that divine, excellent standard (dhvajavara) does not get entangled in trees and is also not harmed by weapons. It is beheld by both gods and humans.

26.
Acyuta (Kṛṣṇa), that foremost among men, mounted that divine chariot, which rumbled like a thundercloud, and departed with the two Pāṇḍavas.

27.
King Vasu obtained that (chariot) from Vāsava (Indra). From him (Vasu), Bṛhadratha received it. And from Bṛhadratha, in due succession, King Bārhadrathes (Jarāsandha) obtained it.

28.
Then, the mighty-armed, lotus-eyed and highly renowned king (Jarāsandha) departed. He stood outside Girivraja on a level ground.

O King, then all the citizens there, led by Brahmins, approached him (Jarāsandha) with honors and with actions prescribed by sacred law.

And the kings, freed from their captivity, worshipped Madhusūdana and spoke these conciliatory words.

O mighty-armed one, son of Devakī, this upholding of natural law (dharma) is not surprising in you, who are endowed with the strength of Bhīma and Arjuna.

Today, you have accomplished this rescue of the kings who were immersed in the dreadful lake of Jarāsandha, a quagmire of suffering.

O Viṣṇu, O supreme cosmic person (puruṣa)! Fortunately, you have achieved brilliant fame from the liberation (mokṣa) of those afflicted in that extremely formidable mountain fortress.

34.
O foremost of men, O mightiest of men, tell us what we should do. Whatever is to be done must be considered as already accomplished, even if it is difficult for kings.

The magnanimous Hṛṣīkeśa, having comforted them, spoke: 'Yudhiṣṭhira desires to perform the Rājasūya (rājasūya) Vedic ritual.'

36.
Therefore, for Yudhishthira, who is committed to natural law (dharma) and desires to achieve universal kingship, let assistance be given by all of you for the purpose of the Vedic ritual (yajña).

Then, O foremost of the Bharatas, those kings, with contented minds, all said, 'So be it,' and pledged to abide by that command.

38.
Those kings made Daśārha (Kṛṣṇa) a recipient of tribute in the form of jewels. Govinda (Kṛṣṇa), with compassion, accepted that from them, though with difficulty.

Indeed, Sahadeva, the son of Jarāsandha and a great warrior, came forth with his people and ministers, having placed his priest at the forefront.

Having become humble and modest, Sahadeva, accompanied by many jewels as tribute, approached Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), the deity of men.

Then Kṛṣṇa, having given assurance of safety (abhaya) to that fearful man, immediately consecrated Jarāsandha's son right there at that time.

The intelligent king, having achieved unity (with them) and having been honored by Krishna and the two sons of Pṛthā (Arjuna and Bhima), again entered the city of Jarasandha.

But Krishna, the lotus-eyed one, radiant with supreme splendor along with the two sons of Pṛthā (Arjuna and Bhima), having taken numerous jewels, departed.

Then Yudhiṣṭhira, having honored Kṛṣṇa appropriately, joyfully embraced Bhimasena and Arjuna.

Then, with Jarāsaṃdha vanquished, Ajātaśatru (Yudhiṣṭhira), having attained the victory accomplished by his two brothers, rejoiced along with his brothers.

And the Pāṇḍava (Yudhiṣṭhira), having met with those kings according to their seniority, and having respectfully honored and worshipped them, then dismissed the rulers.
