संजय उवाच ।
मारिषाधिरथेः श्रुत्वा वचो युद्धाभिनन्दिनः ।
शल्योऽब्रवीत्पुनः कर्णं निदर्शनमुदाहरन् ॥१॥

māriṣādhiratheḥ śrutvā vaco yuddhābhinandinaḥ ,
śalyo'bravītpunaḥ karṇaṁ nidarśanamudāharan.

1. Sañjaya said: O respected one, having heard the words of Karna (adhiratheḥ), who was delighting in battle, Shalya spoke to Karna again, illustrating his point with an example.
यथैव मत्तो मद्येन त्वं तथा न च वा तथा ।
तथाहं त्वां प्रमाद्यन्तं चिकित्सामि सुहृत्तया ॥२॥
2. yathaiva matto madyena tvaṁ tathā na ca vā tathā ,
tathāhaṁ tvāṁ pramādyantaṁ cikitsāmi suhṛttayā.
2. yathā eva mattaḥ madyena tvam tathā na ca vā tathā
tathā aham tvām pramādyantam cikitsāmi suhṛttayā

2. Just as you are intoxicated by liquor, or perhaps not quite in that manner, so I, out of friendship, treat you who are acting heedlessly.
इमां काकोपमां कर्ण प्रोच्यमानां निबोध मे ।
श्रुत्वा यथेष्टं कुर्यास्त्वं विहीन कुलपांसन ॥३॥
3. imāṁ kākopamāṁ karṇa procyamānāṁ nibodha me ,
śrutvā yatheṣṭaṁ kuryāstvaṁ vihīna kulapāṁsana.
3. imām kāka-upamām karṇa procya-mānām nibodha me
śrutvā yathā-iṣṭam kuryāḥ tvam vihīna kula-pāṃsana
3. karṇa,
vihīna kulapāṃsana,
me procya-mānām imām kāka-upamām nibodha.

3. O Karṇa, listen to this analogy of the crow that I am about to relate. Having heard it, you, O wretched one, O disgracer of your family, may then do as you please.
नाहमात्मनि किंचिद्वै किल्बिषं कर्ण संस्मरे ।
येन त्वं मां महाबाहो हन्तुमिच्छस्यनागसम् ॥४॥
4. nāhamātmani kiṁcidvai kilbiṣaṁ karṇa saṁsmare ,
yena tvaṁ māṁ mahābāho hantumicchasyanāgasam.
4. na aham ātmani kiṃcit vai kilbiṣam karṇa saṃsmare
yena tvam mām mahā-bāho hantum icchasi anāgasam
4. karṇa,
mahā-bāho,
aham ātmani kiṃcit kilbiṣam vai na saṃsmare,
yena tvam anāgasam mām hantum icchasi.
4. O Karṇa, I truly do not remember any offense (kilbiṣam) within myself (ātman) by which you, O mighty-armed one, desire to kill me, an innocent one.
अवश्यं तु मया वाच्यं बुध्यतां यदि ते हितम् ।
विशेषतो रथस्थेन राज्ञश्चैव हितैषिणा ॥५॥
5. avaśyaṁ tu mayā vācyaṁ budhyatāṁ yadi te hitam ,
viśeṣato rathasthena rājñaścaiva hitaiṣiṇā.
5. avaśyam tu mayā vācyam budhyatām yadi te hitam
viśeṣataḥ ratha-sthena rājñaḥ ca eva hita-iṣiṇā
5. tu,
mayā avaśyam vācyam (etat); yadi te hitam budhyatām.
viśeṣataḥ ratha-sthena ca eva rājñaḥ hita-iṣiṇā (mayā).
5. However, what is beneficial for you must certainly be spoken by me, if it is to be understood. Especially so, as I am stationed on a chariot and am a well-wisher of the king.
समं च विषमं चैव रथिनश्च बलाबलम् ।
श्रमः खेदश्च सततं हयानां रथिना सह ॥६॥
6. samaṁ ca viṣamaṁ caiva rathinaśca balābalam ,
śramaḥ khedaśca satataṁ hayānāṁ rathinā saha.
6. samam ca viṣamam ca eva rathinaḥ ca balābalam
śramaḥ khedaḥ ca satatam hayānām rathinā saha

6. Both even and uneven terrain, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of the charioteers, and the constant fatigue and weariness experienced by the horses and their charioteers.
आयुधस्य परिज्ञानं रुतं च मृगपक्षिणाम् ।
भारश्चाप्यतिभारश्च शल्यानां च प्रतिक्रिया ॥७॥
7. āyudhasya parijñānaṁ rutaṁ ca mṛgapakṣiṇām ,
bhāraścāpyatibhāraśca śalyānāṁ ca pratikriyā.

ca api atibhāraḥ ca śalyānām ca pratikriyā

7. Knowledge of weapons, the cries of wild animals and birds, both normal and excessive burdens, and the remedies for projectiles.
अस्त्रयोगश्च युद्धं च निमित्तानि तथैव च ।
सर्वमेतन्मया ज्ञेयं रथस्यास्य कुटुम्बिना ।
अतस्त्वां कथये कर्ण निदर्शनमिदं पुनः ॥८॥
8. astrayogaśca yuddhaṁ ca nimittāni tathaiva ca ,
sarvametanmayā jñeyaṁ rathasyāsya kuṭumbinā ,
atastvāṁ kathaye karṇa nidarśanamidaṁ punaḥ.
8. astrayogaḥ ca yuddham ca nimittāni
tathā eva ca sarvam etat mayā jñeyam
rathasya asya kuṭumbinā ataḥ tvām
kathaye karṇa nidarśanam idam punaḥ

8. The deployment of weapons (yoga), warfare, omens, and similar matters - all of this must be known by me, the master of this chariot. Therefore, Karna, I will recount this example to you again.
वैश्यः किल समुद्रान्ते प्रभूतधनधान्यवान् ।
यज्वा दानपतिः क्षान्तः स्वकर्मस्थोऽभवच्छुचिः ॥९॥
9. vaiśyaḥ kila samudrānte prabhūtadhanadhānyavān ,
yajvā dānapatiḥ kṣāntaḥ svakarmastho'bhavacchuciḥ.

yajvā dānapatiḥ kṣāntaḥ svakarmasthaḥ abhavat śuciḥ
9. kila samudrānte prabhūtadhanadhānyavān yajvā

9. Indeed, a Vaiśya, possessing abundant wealth and grain, lived by the seashore. He was a performer of Vedic rituals (yajña), a lord of charity (dāna), patient, steadfast in his own duty (sva-karma), and became pure.
बहुपुत्रः प्रियापत्यः सर्वभूतानुकम्पकः ।
राज्ञो धर्मप्रधानस्य राष्ट्रे वसति निर्भयः ॥१०॥
10. bahuputraḥ priyāpatyaḥ sarvabhūtānukampakaḥ ,
rājño dharmapradhānasya rāṣṭre vasati nirbhayaḥ.
10. bahūputraḥ priyāpatyaḥ sarvabhūtānukampakaḥ
rājñaḥ dharmapradhānasya rāṣṭre vasati nirbhayaḥ
10. bahūputraḥ priyāpatyaḥ sarvabhūtānukampakaḥ

10. A person who has many children and dear offspring, and is compassionate towards all beings, lives fearlessly in the kingdom of a king whose primary principle is righteousness (dharma).
पुत्राणां तस्य बालानां कुमाराणां यशस्विनाम् ।
काको बहूनामभवदुच्छिष्टकृतभोजनः ॥११॥
11. putrāṇāṁ tasya bālānāṁ kumārāṇāṁ yaśasvinām ,
kāko bahūnāmabhavaducchiṣṭakṛtabhojanaḥ.
11. putrāṇām tasya bālānām kumārāṇām yaśasvinām
kākaḥ bahūnām abhavat ucchiṣṭakṛtabhojanaḥ

11. Among his many young and illustrious sons, a crow became accustomed to eating their leftover food.
तस्मै सदा प्रयच्छन्ति वैश्यपुत्राः कुमारकाः ।
मांसोदनं दधि क्षीरं पायसं मधुसर्पिषी ॥१२॥
12. tasmai sadā prayacchanti vaiśyaputrāḥ kumārakāḥ ,
māṁsodanaṁ dadhi kṣīraṁ pāyasaṁ madhusarpiṣī.
12. tasmai sadā prayacchanti vaiśyaputrāḥ kumārakāḥ
māṃsodanam dadhi kṣīram pāyasam madhusarpiṣī
12. vaiśyaputrāḥ kumārakāḥ sadā tasmai māṃsodanam
dadhi kṣīram pāyasam madhusarpiṣī prayacchanti
12. The young sons of the merchant class (Vaiśyas) always offer him (the crow) meat-rice, curds, milk, sweet rice pudding, and honey and ghee.
स चोच्छिष्टभृतः काको वैश्यपुत्रैः कुमारकैः ।
सदृशान्पक्षिणो दृप्तः श्रेयसश्चावमन्यते ॥१३॥
13. sa cocchiṣṭabhṛtaḥ kāko vaiśyaputraiḥ kumārakaiḥ ,
sadṛśānpakṣiṇo dṛptaḥ śreyasaścāvamanyate.
13. saḥ ca ucchiṣṭabhṛtaḥ kākaḥ vaiśyaputraiḥ kumārakaiḥ
sadṛśān pakṣiṇaḥ dṛptaḥ śreyasaḥ ca avamanyate
13. saḥ ucchiṣṭabhṛtaḥ dṛptaḥ kākaḥ ca vaiśyaputraiḥ
kumārakaiḥ sadṛśān pakṣiṇaḥ ca śreyasaḥ avamanyate
13. And that crow, nourished by the leftovers from the young Vaiśya sons, grew proud and disdained both his peers and even superior birds.
अथ हंसाः समुद्रान्ते कदाचिदभिपातिनः ।
गरुडस्य गतौ तुल्याश्चक्राङ्गा हृष्टचेतसः ॥१४॥
14. atha haṁsāḥ samudrānte kadācidabhipātinaḥ ,
garuḍasya gatau tulyāścakrāṅgā hṛṣṭacetasaḥ.
14. atha haṃsāḥ samudrānte kadācit abhipātinaḥ
garuḍasya gatau tulyāḥ cakrāṅgāḥ hṛṣṭacetasaḥ
14. atha kadācit samudrānte abhipātinaḥ garuḍasya
gatau tulyāḥ cakrāṅgāḥ hṛṣṭacetasaḥ haṃsāḥ
14. Then, once, joyful-minded swans, graceful in appearance, flying down to the ocean's edge, were equal to Garuda in their swift movement.
कुमारकास्ततो हंसान्दृष्ट्वा काकमथाब्रुवन् ।
भवानेव विशिष्टो हि पतत्रिभ्यो विहंगम ॥१५॥
15. kumārakāstato haṁsāndṛṣṭvā kākamathābruvan ,
bhavāneva viśiṣṭo hi patatribhyo vihaṁgama.
15. kumārakāḥ tataḥ haṃsān dṛṣṭvā kākam atha abruvan
bhavān eva viśiṣṭaḥ hi patatribhyaḥ vihaṅgama
15. tataḥ kumārakāḥ haṃsān dṛṣṭvā kākam atha abruvan
vihaṅgama bhavān eva patatribhyaḥ hi viśiṣṭaḥ
15. Then, the young boys, having seen the swans, said to a crow, 'Indeed, O bird, you are truly superior among all flying creatures!'
प्रतार्यमाणस्तु स तैरल्पबुद्धिभिरण्डजः ।
तद्वचः सत्यमित्येव मौर्ख्याद्दर्पाच्च मन्यते ॥१६॥
16. pratāryamāṇastu sa tairalpabuddhibhiraṇḍajaḥ ,
tadvacaḥ satyamityeva maurkhyāddarpācca manyate.
16. pratāryamāṇaḥ tu saḥ taiḥ alpabuddhibhiḥ aṇḍajaḥ tat
vacaḥ satyam iti eva maurkkhyāt darpāt ca manyate
16. tu saḥ aṇḍajaḥ taiḥ alpabuddhibhiḥ pratāryamāṇaḥ
maurkkhyāt darpāt ca tat vacaḥ satyam iti eva manyate
16. But he, the crow (aṇḍaja), being deceived by those foolish boys, believes their words to be true, solely out of foolishness and pride.
तान्सोऽभिपत्य जिज्ञासुः क एषां श्रेष्ठभागिति ।
उच्छिष्टदर्पितः काको बहूनां दूरपातिनाम् ॥१७॥
17. tānso'bhipatya jijñāsuḥ ka eṣāṁ śreṣṭhabhāgiti ,
ucchiṣṭadarpitaḥ kāko bahūnāṁ dūrapātinām.
17. tān saḥ abhipatya jijñāsuḥ kaḥ eṣām śreṣṭhabhāk
iti ucchiṣṭadarpitaḥ kākaḥ bahūnām dūrapātinām
17. ucchiṣṭadarpitaḥ kākaḥ saḥ tān bahūnām dūrapātinām
abhipatya jijñāsuḥ kaḥ eṣām śreṣṭhabhāk iti
17. That crow, made conceited by the flattering words, approached those many far-flying (swans), curious to know, 'Who among these is the foremost?'
तेषां यं प्रवरं मेने हंसानां दूरपातिनाम् ।
तमाह्वयत दुर्बुद्धिः पताम इति पक्षिणम् ॥१८॥
18. teṣāṁ yaṁ pravaraṁ mene haṁsānāṁ dūrapātinām ,
tamāhvayata durbuddhiḥ patāma iti pakṣiṇam.
18. teṣām yam pravaram mene haṃsānām dūrapātinām
tam āhvayat durbuddhiḥ patāma iti pakṣiṇam
18. durbuddhiḥ dūrapātinām haṃsānām teṣām yam
pravaram mene tam pakṣiṇam patāma iti āhvayat
18. Among those far-flying swans (haṃsa), the foolish bird (durbuddhi) considered one to be the best and challenged him, saying, "Let us fly (patāma)!"
तच्छ्रुत्वा प्राहसन्हंसा ये तत्रासन्समागताः ।
भाषतो बहु काकस्य बलिनः पततां वराः ।
इदमूचुश्च चक्राङ्गा वचः काकं विहंगमाः ॥१९॥
19. tacchrutvā prāhasanhaṁsā ye tatrāsansamāgatāḥ ,
bhāṣato bahu kākasya balinaḥ patatāṁ varāḥ ,
idamūcuśca cakrāṅgā vacaḥ kākaṁ vihaṁgamāḥ.
19. tat śrutvā prahasan haṃsāḥ ye tatra
āsan samāgatāḥ bhāṣataḥ bahu kākasya
balinaḥ patatām varāḥ idam ūcuḥ
ca cakrāṅgāḥ vacaḥ kākam vihaṃgamāḥ
19. tat śrutvā ye tatra samāgatāḥ
patatām varāḥ haṃsāḥ bahu bhāṣataḥ
balinaḥ kākasya prahasan ca cakrāṅgāḥ
vihaṃgamāḥ idam vacaḥ kākam ūcuḥ
19. Having heard that, the swans (haṃsa), who were gathered there and were the foremost among flyers, laughed as the mighty crow (kāka) spoke boastfully. And these birds (cakrāṅgāḥ, vihaṅgamāḥ) then spoke these words to the crow (kāka).
वयं हंसाश्चरामेमां पृथिवीं मानसौकसः ।
पक्षिणां च वयं नित्यं दूरपातेन पूजिताः ॥२०॥
20. vayaṁ haṁsāścarāmemāṁ pṛthivīṁ mānasaukasaḥ ,
pakṣiṇāṁ ca vayaṁ nityaṁ dūrapātena pūjitāḥ.
20. vayam haṃsāḥ carāma imām pṛthivīm mānasaukasaḥ
pakṣiṇām ca vayam nityam dūrapātena pūjitāḥ
20. vayam mānasaukasaḥ haṃsāḥ imām pṛthivīm carāma
ca vayam nityam dūrapātena pakṣiṇām pūjitāḥ
20. We are swans (haṃsa), dwellers of Lake Manasa, and we roam this earth. Among all birds, we are always revered for our ability to fly great distances.
कथं नु हंसं बलिनं वज्राङ्गं दूरपातिनम् ।
काको भूत्वा निपतने समाह्वयसि दुर्मते ।
कथं त्वं पतनं काक सहास्माभिर्ब्रवीषि तत् ॥२१॥
21. kathaṁ nu haṁsaṁ balinaṁ vajrāṅgaṁ dūrapātinam ,
kāko bhūtvā nipatane samāhvayasi durmate ,
kathaṁ tvaṁ patanaṁ kāka sahāsmābhirbravīṣi tat.
21. katham nu haṃsam balinam vajrāṅgam
dūrapātinam kākaḥ bhūtvā nipatane
samāhvayasi durmate katham tvam
patanam kāka saha asmābhiḥ bravīṣi tat
21. durmate kākaḥ bhūtvā katham nu
balinam vajrāṅgam dūrapātinam haṃsam
nipatane samāhvayasi kāka tvam
asmābhiḥ saha patanam tat katham bravīṣi
21. O foolish one (durmate), how indeed, being a crow (kāka), do you challenge a powerful, thunderbolt-bodied, far-flying swan (haṃsa) to a flying contest? O crow (kāka), how can you even propose flying with us?
अथ हंसवचो मूढः कुत्सयित्वा पुनः पुनः ।
प्रजगादोत्तरं काकः कत्थनो जातिलाघवात् ॥२२॥
22. atha haṁsavaco mūḍhaḥ kutsayitvā punaḥ punaḥ ,
prajagādottaraṁ kākaḥ katthano jātilāghavāt.
22. atha haṃsavacaḥ mūḍhaḥ kutsayitvā punaḥ punaḥ
prajagāda uttaram kākaḥ katthanaḥ jātilāghavāt
22. kākaḥ mūḍhaḥ haṃsavacaḥ punaḥ punaḥ kutsayitvā
atha jātilāghavāt katthanaḥ uttaram prajagāda
22. Then, the foolish crow, repeatedly scorning the swan's words, gave his reply, boasting due to the inherent inferiority of his kind (jāti).
शतमेकं च पातानां पतितास्मि न संशयः ।
शतयोजनमेकैकं विचित्रं विविधं तथा ॥२३॥
23. śatamekaṁ ca pātānāṁ patitāsmi na saṁśayaḥ ,
śatayojanamekaikaṁ vicitraṁ vividhaṁ tathā.
23. śatam ekam ca pātānām patitā asmi na saṃśayaḥ
śatayojanam ekaikam vicitram vividham tathā
23. na saṃśayaḥ pātānām ekam śatam patitā asmi
ekaikam śatayojanam tathā vicitram vividham ca
23. I have undoubtedly performed a hundred flights (pāta), each one hundred yojanas in length, and each one diverse and manifold.
उड्डीनमवडीनं च प्रडीनं डीनमेव च ।
निडीनमथ संडीनं तिर्यक्चातिगतानि च ॥२४॥
24. uḍḍīnamavaḍīnaṁ ca praḍīnaṁ ḍīnameva ca ,
niḍīnamatha saṁḍīnaṁ tiryakcātigatāni ca.
24. uḍḍīnam avaḍīnam ca praḍīnam ḍīnam eva ca
niḍīnam atha saṃḍīnam tiryāk ca atigatāni ca
24. uḍḍīnam avaḍīnam ca praḍīnam ḍīnam eva ca
niḍīnam atha saṃḍīnam tiryāk ca atigatāni ca
24. Soaring flight, downward flight, forward flight, and just general flight; then, inward flight, collective flight, and also sideways and overpassing flights.
विडीनं परिडीनं च पराडीनं सुडीनकम् ।
अतिडीनं महाडीनं निडीनं परिडीनकम् ॥२५॥
25. viḍīnaṁ pariḍīnaṁ ca parāḍīnaṁ suḍīnakam ,
atiḍīnaṁ mahāḍīnaṁ niḍīnaṁ pariḍīnakam.
25. viḍīnam pariḍīnam ca parāḍīnam suḍīnakam
atiḍīnam mahāḍīnam niḍīnam pariḍīnakam
25. viḍīnam pariḍīnam ca parāḍīnam suḍīnakam
atiḍīnam mahāḍīnam niḍīnam pariḍīnakam
25. Spread-out flight, encircling flight, and retreating flight, as well as excellent flight; surpassing flight, great flight, settling flight, and a further encircling flight.
गतागतप्रतिगता बह्वीश्च निकुडीनिकाः ।
कर्तास्मि मिषतां वोऽद्य ततो द्रक्ष्यथ मे बलम् ॥२६॥
26. gatāgatapratigatā bahvīśca nikuḍīnikāḥ ,
kartāsmi miṣatāṁ vo'dya tato drakṣyatha me balam.
26. gatāgatapratigatā bahvīḥ ca nikuḍīnikāḥ kartā
asmi miṣatām vaḥ adya tataḥ drakṣyatha me balam
26. adya vaḥ miṣatām (aham) gatāgatapratigatāḥ bahvīḥ
ca nikuḍīnikāḥ kartā asmi tataḥ me balam drakṣyatha
26. Today, while you watch, I will perform many maneuvers of going, coming, and returning, along with numerous evasive dives. Then you will witness my power.
एवमुक्ते तु काकेन प्रहस्यैको विहंगमः ।
उवाच हंसस्तं काकं वचनं तन्निबोध मे ॥२७॥
27. evamukte tu kākena prahasyaiko vihaṁgamaḥ ,
uvāca haṁsastaṁ kākaṁ vacanaṁ tannibodha me.
27. evam ukte tu kākena prahasya ekaḥ vihaṅgamaḥ
uvāca haṃsaḥ tam kākam vacanam tat nibodha me
27. kākena evam ukte tu ekaḥ vihaṅgamaḥ haṃsaḥ prahasya
tam kākam vacanam uvāca tat me vacanam nibodha
27. When the crow had spoken thus, one bird, a swan, laughed and said to that crow, 'Now listen to my words.'
शतमेकं च पातानां त्वं काक पतिता ध्रुवम् ।
एकमेव तु ये पातं विदुः सर्वे विहंगमाः ॥२८॥
28. śatamekaṁ ca pātānāṁ tvaṁ kāka patitā dhruvam ,
ekameva tu ye pātaṁ viduḥ sarve vihaṁgamāḥ.
28. śatam ekam ca pātānām tvam kāka patitā dhruvam
ekam eva tu ye pātam viduḥ sarve vihaṅgamāḥ
28. kāka tvam pātānām śatam ekam ca dhruvam patitā
(asi) ye sarve vihaṅgamāḥ tu ekam eva pātam viduḥ
28. O crow, you certainly perform a hundred types of dives. However, all other birds know only one true dive.
तमहं पतिता काक नान्यं जानामि कंचन ।
पत त्वमपि रक्ताक्ष येन वा तेन मन्यसे ॥२९॥
29. tamahaṁ patitā kāka nānyaṁ jānāmi kaṁcana ,
pata tvamapi raktākṣa yena vā tena manyase.

29. O crow, that one (dive) is what I know as the true dive; I know no other whatsoever. You too, O red-eyed one, may fly however you deem appropriate.
अथ काकाः प्रजहसुर्ये तत्रासन्समागताः ।
कथमेकेन पातेन हंसः पातशतं जयेत् ॥३०॥
30. atha kākāḥ prajahasurye tatrāsansamāgatāḥ ,
kathamekena pātena haṁsaḥ pātaśataṁ jayet.

30. Then the crows who had gathered there laughed loudly, (saying) "How can a swan conquer a hundred swoops with just one swoop?"
एकेनैव शतस्यैकं पातेनाभिभविष्यति ।
हंसस्य पतितं काको बलवानाशुविक्रमः ॥३१॥
31. ekenaiva śatasyaikaṁ pātenābhibhaviṣyati ,
haṁsasya patitaṁ kāko balavānāśuvikramaḥ.
31. ekena eva śatasya ekam pātena abhibhaviṣyati
haṃsasya patitam kākaḥ balavān āśuvikramaḥ

31. The powerful crow, swift in valor, will indeed overpower a single (swoop) out of a hundred of the swan's swoops with just one (of its own) swoop.
प्रपेततुः स्पर्धयाथ ततस्तौ हंसवायसौ ।
एकपाती च चक्राङ्गः काकः पातशतेन च ॥३२॥
32. prapetatuḥ spardhayātha tatastau haṁsavāyasau ,
ekapātī ca cakrāṅgaḥ kākaḥ pātaśatena ca.

32. Then, in rivalry, the two, the swan and the crow, flew down. Chakrāṅga (the swan), who performs a single swoop, and the crow, with a hundred swoops.
पेतिवानथ चक्राङ्गः पेतिवानथ वायसः ।
विसिस्मापयिषुः पातैराचक्षाणोऽऽत्मनः क्रियाम् ॥३३॥
33. petivānatha cakrāṅgaḥ petivānatha vāyasaḥ ,
visismāpayiṣuḥ pātairācakṣāṇo''tmanaḥ kriyām.

33. Then Chakrāṅga (the swan) swooped down, and then the crow swooped down, eager to astonish with its swoops, demonstrating its own action.
अथ काकस्य चित्राणि पतितानीतराणि च ।
दृष्ट्वा प्रमुदिताः काका विनेदुरथ तैः स्वरैः ॥३४॥
34. atha kākasya citrāṇi patitānītarāṇi ca ,
dṛṣṭvā pramuditāḥ kākā vineduratha taiḥ svaraiḥ.

34. Then, upon seeing the crow's strange things, both those that had fallen and others, the crows, greatly delighted, cried out with those very sounds.
हंसांश्चावहसन्ति स्म प्रावदन्नप्रियाणि च ।
उत्पत्योत्पत्य च प्राहुर्मुहूर्तमिति चेति च ॥३५॥
35. haṁsāṁścāvahasanti sma prāvadannapriyāṇi ca ,
utpatyotpatya ca prāhurmuhūrtamiti ceti ca.
35. haṃsān ca avahasanti sma prāvadant apriyāṇi ca
utpatya utpatya ca prāhuḥ muhūrtam iti ca iti ca
35. kākāḥ haṃsān avahasanti sma ca apriyāṇi ca prāvadant
utpatya utpatya ca prāhuḥ muhūrtam iti ca iti ca
35. They laughed at the geese and also uttered harsh words. Leaping up again and again, they said, "For just a moment!" and "For just a moment!" (as if taunting them about the brevity of their success).
वृक्षाग्रेभ्यः स्थलेभ्यश्च निपतन्त्युत्पतन्ति च ।
कुर्वाणा विविधान्रावानाशंसन्तस्तदा जयम् ॥३६॥
36. vṛkṣāgrebhyaḥ sthalebhyaśca nipatantyutpatanti ca ,
kurvāṇā vividhānrāvānāśaṁsantastadā jayam.
36. vṛkṣāgrebhyaḥ sthalebhyah ca nipatanti utpatanti
ca kurvāṇāḥ vividhān rāvān āśaṃsantaḥ tadā jayam
36. te vṛkṣāgrebhyaḥ ca sthalebhyah ca nipatanti ca

36. Falling down from the treetops and from the ground, and flying up, they were making various cries and at that time anticipating victory.
हंसस्तु मृदुकेनैव विक्रान्तुमुपचक्रमे ।
प्रत्यहीयत काकाच्च मुहूर्तमिव मारिष ॥३७॥
37. haṁsastu mṛdukenaiva vikrāntumupacakrame ,
pratyahīyata kākācca muhūrtamiva māriṣa.
37. haṃsaḥ tu mṛdukena eva vikrāntum upacakrame
prati ahīyata kākāt ca muhūrtam iva māriṣa
37. māriṣa,

37. But the goose began to display prowess only gently; yet he was repelled by the crow, as if only for a moment, O venerable one.
अवमन्य रयं हंसानिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ।
योऽसावुत्पतितो हंसः सोऽसावेव प्रहीयते ॥३८॥
38. avamanya rayaṁ haṁsānidaṁ vacanamabravīt ,
yo'sāvutpatito haṁsaḥ so'sāveva prahīyate.
38. avamanya rayam haṃsān idam vacanam abravīt yaḥ
asau utpatitaḥ haṃsaḥ saḥ asau eva prahīyate
38. rayam avamanya idam vacanam haṃsān abravīt.

38. Disdaining (the crow's) speed, (the crow) spoke this word to the swans: "That swan who has flown up, that very one will certainly fall."
अथ हंसः स तच्छ्रुत्वा प्रापतत्पश्चिमां दिशम् ।
उपर्युपरि वेगेन सागरं वरुणालयम् ॥३९॥
39. atha haṁsaḥ sa tacchrutvā prāpatatpaścimāṁ diśam ,
uparyupari vegena sāgaraṁ varuṇālayam.
39. atha haṃsaḥ saḥ tat śrutvā prāpatat paścimām
diśam uparyupari vegena sāgaram varuṇālayam
39. atha saḥ haṃsaḥ tat śrutvā vegena uparyupari paścimām diśam sāgaram varuṇālayam prāpatat.
39. Then that swan, having heard that (challenge), flew westward with great speed, high above the ocean, the abode of Varuṇa.
ततो भीः प्राविशत्काकं तदा तत्र विचेतसम् ।
द्वीपद्रुमानपश्यन्तं निपतन्तं श्रमान्वितम् ।
निपतेयं क्व नु श्रान्त इति तस्मिञ्जलार्णवे ॥४०॥
40. tato bhīḥ prāviśatkākaṁ tadā tatra vicetasam ,
dvīpadrumānapaśyantaṁ nipatantaṁ śramānvitam ,
nipateyaṁ kva nu śrānta iti tasmiñjalārṇave.
40. tataḥ bhīḥ prāviśat kākam tadā tatra
vicetasam dvīpadrumān apaśyantam
nipatantam śramānvitam nipateyam
kva nu śrāntaḥ iti tasmin jalārṇave
40. tataḥ tadā tatra vicetasam kākam bhīḥ prāviśat.

iti "kva nu śrāntaḥ tasmin jalārṇave nipateyam?"
40. Then fear entered the crow, which was at that moment bewildered. Weary, falling, and unable to see any island trees, (it thought): "Where can I fall, exhausted, in this watery ocean?"
अविषह्यः समुद्रो हि बहुसत्त्वगणालयः ।
महाभूतशतोद्भासी नभसोऽपि विशिष्यते ॥४१॥
41. aviṣahyaḥ samudro hi bahusattvagaṇālayaḥ ,
mahābhūtaśatodbhāsī nabhaso'pi viśiṣyate.
41. aviṣahyaḥ samudraḥ hi bahusattvagaṇālayaḥ
mahābhūtaśatodbhāsī nabhasaḥ api viśiṣyate
41. hi samudraḥ aviṣahyaḥ bahusattvagaṇālayaḥ mahābhūtaśatodbhāsī.
nabhasaḥ api viśiṣyate.
41. The ocean, indeed, is insurmountable, an abode for countless groups of beings, and it shines with hundreds of great elements; it surpasses even the sky.
गाम्भीर्याद्धि समुद्रस्य न विशेषः कुलाधम ।
दिगम्बराम्भसां कर्ण समुद्रस्था हि दुर्जयाः ।
विदूरपातात्तोयस्य किं पुनः कर्ण वायसः ॥४२॥
42. gāmbhīryāddhi samudrasya na viśeṣaḥ kulādhama ,
digambarāmbhasāṁ karṇa samudrasthā hi durjayāḥ ,
vidūrapātāttoyasya kiṁ punaḥ karṇa vāyasaḥ.

42. Indeed, O lowest of your lineage (kulādhamā), there is nothing particularly special about the ocean's depth. O Karṇa, the waters (ambhas) that gather in the ocean from all directions are truly unconquerable. What significance, then, O Karṇa, does a crow hold regarding water falling from a great height?
अथ हंसोऽभ्यतिक्रम्य मुहूर्तमिति चेति च ।
अवेक्षमाणस्तं काकं नाशक्नोद्व्यपसर्पितुम् ।
अतिक्रम्य च चक्राङ्गः काकं तं समुदैक्षत ॥४३॥
43. atha haṁso'bhyatikramya muhūrtamiti ceti ca ,
avekṣamāṇastaṁ kākaṁ nāśaknodvyapasarpitum ,
atikramya ca cakrāṅgaḥ kākaṁ taṁ samudaikṣata.
43. atha haṃsaḥ abhyatikramya muhūrtam
iti ca iti ca avekṣamāṇaḥ tam kākam
na aśaknot vyapasarpitum atikramya
ca cakrāṅgaḥ kākam tam samudaikṣata
43. atha haṃsaḥ muhūrtam iti ca iti ca abhyatikramya,
tam kākam avekṣamāṇaḥ,
vyapasarpitum na aśaknot.
ca cakrāṅgaḥ atikramya tam kākam samudaikṣata.
43. Then the swan, after having moved past for a moment, here and there, and observing that crow, was unable to move away. And the cakrāṅga (swan), having passed beyond (the crow), looked intently at it.
तं तथा हीयमानं च हंसो दृष्ट्वाब्रवीदिदम् ।
उज्जिहीर्षुर्निमज्जन्तं स्मरन्सत्पुरुषव्रतम् ॥४४॥
44. taṁ tathā hīyamānaṁ ca haṁso dṛṣṭvābravīdidam ,
ujjihīrṣurnimajjantaṁ smaransatpuruṣavratam.
44. tam tathā hīyamāṇam ca haṃsaḥ dṛṣṭvā abravīt idam
ujjihīrṣuḥ nimajjantam smaran satpuruṣavratam
44. ca tam tathā hīyamāṇam dṛṣṭvā,
haṃsaḥ idam abravīt.

nimajjantam ujjihīrṣuḥ.
44. The swan, seeing him thus diminishing, spoke these words, desiring to uplift him who was sinking, remembering the sacred duty (vrata) of noble individuals.
बहूनि पतनानि त्वमाचक्षाणो मुहुर्मुहुः ।
पतस्यव्याहरंश्चेदं न नो गुह्यं प्रभाषसे ॥४५॥
45. bahūni patanāni tvamācakṣāṇo muhurmuhuḥ ,
patasyavyāharaṁścedaṁ na no guhyaṁ prabhāṣase.
45. bahūni patanāni tvam ācakṣāṇaḥ muhuḥ muhuḥ patasi
avyāharan ca idam na naḥ guhyam prabhāṣase
45. tvam muhuḥ muhuḥ bahūni patanāni ācakṣāṇaḥ,
avyāharan ca idam patasi.
naḥ guhyam na prabhāṣase.
45. You, repeatedly speaking of many downfalls, yourself fall while remaining silent about this (your situation). You do not disclose your secret (guhya) to us.
किं नाम पतनं काक यत्त्वं पतसि सांप्रतम् ।
जलं स्पृशसि पक्षाभ्यां तुण्डेन च पुनः पुनः ॥४६॥
46. kiṁ nāma patanaṁ kāka yattvaṁ patasi sāṁpratam ,
jalaṁ spṛśasi pakṣābhyāṁ tuṇḍena ca punaḥ punaḥ.
46. kim nāma patanam kāka yat tvam patasi sāṃpratam
jalam spṛśasi pakṣābhyām tuṇḍena ca punaḥ punaḥ
46. kāka tvam sāṃpratam yat kim nāma patanam patasi
pakṣābhyām tuṇḍena ca punaḥ punaḥ jalam spṛśasi
46. O crow, what kind of falling is this, that you are performing right now? You repeatedly touch the water with your wings and with your beak.
स पक्षाभ्यां स्पृशन्नार्तस्तुण्डेन जलमर्णवे ।
काको दृढं परिश्रान्तः सहसा निपपात ह ॥४७॥
47. sa pakṣābhyāṁ spṛśannārtastuṇḍena jalamarṇave ,
kāko dṛḍhaṁ pariśrāntaḥ sahasā nipapāta ha.
47. saḥ pakṣābhyām spṛśan ārtaḥ tuṇḍena jalam arṇave
kākaḥ dṛḍham pariśrāntaḥ sahasā nipapāta ha
47. saḥ ārtaḥ kākaḥ pakṣābhyām tuṇḍena ca arṇave
jalam spṛśan dṛḍham pariśrāntaḥ sahasā nipapāta ha
47. Afflicted, that crow, touching the water in the ocean with his wings and beak, became greatly exhausted and suddenly fell down.
हंस उवाच ।
शतमेकं च पातानां यत्प्रभाषसि वायस ।
नानाविधानीह पुरा तच्चानृतमिहाद्य ते ॥४८॥
48. haṁsa uvāca ,
śatamekaṁ ca pātānāṁ yatprabhāṣasi vāyasa ,
nānāvidhānīha purā taccānṛtamihādya te.
48. haṃsaḥ uvāca śatam ekam ca pātānām yat prabhāṣasi
vāyasa nānāvidhāni iha purā tat ca anṛtam iha adya te
48. haṃsaḥ uvāca vāyasa yat tvam iha purā nānāvidhāni śatam
ekam ca pātānām prabhāṣasi tat ca iha adya te anṛtam
48. The swan said: 'O crow, what you declare as one hundred and one falls, previously of various kinds, that is now untrue for you here today.'
काक उवाच ।
उच्छिष्टदर्पितो हंस मन्येऽऽत्मानं सुपर्णवत् ।
अवमन्य बहूंश्चाहं काकानन्यांश्च पक्षिणः ।
प्राणैर्हंस प्रपद्ये त्वां द्वीपान्तं प्रापयस्व माम् ॥४९॥
49. kāka uvāca ,
ucchiṣṭadarpito haṁsa manye''tmānaṁ suparṇavat ,
avamanya bahūṁścāhaṁ kākānanyāṁśca pakṣiṇaḥ ,
prāṇairhaṁsa prapadye tvāṁ dvīpāntaṁ prāpayasva mām.
49. kākaḥ uvāca ucchiṣṭadarpita haṃsa manye
ātmānam suparṇavat avamanya bahūn ca
aham kākān anyān ca pakṣiṇaḥ prāṇaiḥ haṃsa
prapadye tvām dvīpāntam prāpayasva mām
49. kākaḥ uvāca haṃsa ucchiṣṭadarpita aham
bahūn kākān ca anyān pakṣiṇaḥ avamanya
ātmānam suparṇavat manye haṃsa prāṇaiḥ
tvām prapadyemām dvīpāntam prāpayasva
49. The crow said: 'O swan, made proud by scraps, I consider my self (ātman) to be like Suparṇa, having disregarded many other crows and birds. O swan, I take refuge (prapadya) in you with my life; please lead me to another island.'
यद्यहं स्वस्तिमान्हंस स्वदेशं प्राप्नुयां पुनः ।
न कंचिदवमन्येयमापदो मां समुद्धर ॥५०॥
50. yadyahaṁ svastimānhaṁsa svadeśaṁ prāpnuyāṁ punaḥ ,
na kaṁcidavamanyeyamāpado māṁ samuddhara.
50. yadi aham svastimān haṃsa svadeśam prāpnuyām
punaḥ na kañcit avamanyeyam āpadaḥ mām samuddhara
50. haṃsa yadi aham svastimān punaḥ svadeśam prāpnuyām
kañcit na avamanyeyam mām āpadaḥ samuddhara
50. If, O swan, I am safe and sound and can reach my own country again, I will not disrespect anyone. Please deliver me from these dangers.
तमेवंवादिनं दीनं विलपन्तमचेतनम् ।
काक काकेति वाशन्तं निमज्जन्तं महार्णवे ॥५१॥
51. tamevaṁvādinaṁ dīnaṁ vilapantamacetanam ,
kāka kāketi vāśantaṁ nimajjantaṁ mahārṇave.
51. tam evam vādinam dīnam vilapantam acetanam
kāka kāka iti vāśantam nimajjantam mahārṇave
51. mahārṇave nimajjantam tam evam vādinam dīnam
vilapantam acetanam kāka kāka iti vāśantam
51. That one, speaking in such a way, miserable, lamenting, unconscious, crying out 'Crow! Crow!' as he was sinking in the great ocean.
तथैत्य वायसं हंसो जलक्लिन्नं सुदुर्दशम् ।
पद्भ्यामुत्क्षिप्य वेपन्तं पृष्ठमारोपयच्छनैः ॥५२॥
52. tathaitya vāyasaṁ haṁso jalaklinnaṁ sudurdaśam ,
padbhyāmutkṣipya vepantaṁ pṛṣṭhamāropayacchanaiḥ.
52. tathā etya vāyasam haṃsaḥ jalaklinnam sudurdarśam
padbhyām utkṣipya vepantam pṛṣṭham āropayat śanaiḥ
52. haṃsaḥ tathā etya jalaklinnam sudurdarśam vepantam
vāyasam padbhyām utkṣipya śanaiḥ pṛṣṭham āropayat
52. Thus, the swan approached the crow, who was drenched with water, barely visible, and trembling. Lifting him with his two feet, he slowly placed him upon his own back.
आरोप्य पृष्ठं काकं तं हंसः कर्ण विचेतसम् ।
आजगाम पुनर्द्वीपं स्पर्धया पेततुर्यतः ॥५३॥
53. āropya pṛṣṭhaṁ kākaṁ taṁ haṁsaḥ karṇa vicetasam ,
ājagāma punardvīpaṁ spardhayā petaturyataḥ.
53. āropya pṛṣṭham kākam tam haṃsaḥ karṇam vicetasam
ājagāma punar dvīpam spardhayā petatuḥ yataḥ
53. haṃsaḥ pṛṣṭham karṇam vicetasam tam kākam āropya

53. Having placed that crow, Karṇa, who was utterly unconscious, on his back, the swan returned to the island from where they both had fallen due to their rivalry.
संस्थाप्य तं चापि पुनः समाश्वास्य च खेचरम् ।
गतो यथेप्सितं देशं हंसो मन इवाशुगः ॥५४॥
54. saṁsthāpya taṁ cāpi punaḥ samāśvāsya ca khecaram ,
gato yathepsitaṁ deśaṁ haṁso mana ivāśugaḥ.
54. saṃsthāpya taṃ ca api punaḥ samāśvāsya ca khecaram
gataḥ yathā-īpsitam deśam haṃsaḥ manaḥ iva āśugaḥ
54. haṃsaḥ taṃ khecaram ca saṃsthāpya punaḥ ca samāśvāsya
manaḥ iva āśugaḥ yathā-īpsitam deśam gataḥ
54. After setting him down and comforting the bird again, the swan departed to his desired destination, swift like the mind.
उच्छिष्टभोजनात्काको यथा वैश्यकुले तु सः ।
एवं त्वमुच्छिष्टभृतो धार्तराष्ट्रैर्न संशयः ।
सदृशाञ्श्रेयसश्चापि सर्वान्कर्णातिमन्यसे ॥५५॥
55. ucchiṣṭabhojanātkāko yathā vaiśyakule tu saḥ ,
evaṁ tvamucchiṣṭabhṛto dhārtarāṣṭrairna saṁśayaḥ ,
sadṛśāñśreyasaścāpi sarvānkarṇātimanyase.
55. ucchiṣṭabhojanāt kākaḥ yathā vaiśyakule
tu saḥ evam tvam ucchiṣṭabhṛtaḥ
dhārtarāṣṭraiḥ na saṃśayaḥ sadṛśān
śreyasaḥ ca api sarvān karṇāt atimanyase
55. yathā kākaḥ vaiśyakule ucchiṣṭabhojanāt
tu saḥ evam tvam dhārtarāṣṭraiḥ
ucchiṣṭabhṛtaḥ na saṃśayaḥ ca api
sarvān sadṛśān śreyasaḥ karṇāt atimanyase
55. Just as a crow lives on leftovers in a merchant's household, so too, you are undoubtedly sustained by the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Kauravas). Yet, you disregard all those who are equal to or superior to Karṇa.
द्रोणद्रौणिकृपैर्गुप्तो भीष्मेणान्यैश्च कौरवैः ।
विराटनगरे पार्थमेकं किं नावधीस्तदा ॥५६॥
56. droṇadrauṇikṛpairgupto bhīṣmeṇānyaiśca kauravaiḥ ,
virāṭanagare pārthamekaṁ kiṁ nāvadhīstadā.

56. When you were protected by Droṇa, Drauṇi (Aśvatthāmā), Kṛpa, Bhīṣma, and other Kauravas, why did you not kill Arjuna, who was all alone, in the city of Virāṭa then?
यत्र व्यस्ताः समस्ताश्च निर्जिताः स्थ किरीटिना ।
सृगाला इव सिंहेन क्व ते वीर्यमभूत्तदा ॥५७॥
57. yatra vyastāḥ samastāśca nirjitāḥ stha kirīṭinā ,
sṛgālā iva siṁhena kva te vīryamabhūttadā.

57. At that time, when you all, both scattered and assembled, were defeated by Arjuna (Kirīṭin) just as jackals are by a lion, where was your prowess then?
भ्रातरं च हतं दृष्ट्वा निर्जितः सव्यसाचिना ।
पश्यतां कुरुवीराणां प्रथमं त्वं पलायथाः ॥५८॥
58. bhrātaraṁ ca hataṁ dṛṣṭvā nirjitaḥ savyasācinā ,
paśyatāṁ kuruvīrāṇāṁ prathamaṁ tvaṁ palāyathāḥ.
58. bhrātaram ca hatam dṛṣṭvā nirjitaḥ savyasācinā
paśyatām kuruvīrāṇām prathamam tvam palāyathāḥ
58. tvam bhrātaram hatam ca savyasācinā nirjitaḥ
dṛṣṭvā kuruvīrāṇām paśyatām prathamam palāyathāḥ
58. And having seen your brother killed and yourself defeated by Arjuna (savyasācin), you were the first to flee while the Kuru heroes watched.
तथा द्वैतवने कर्ण गन्धर्वैः समभिद्रुतः ।
कुरून्समग्रानुत्सृज्य प्रथमं त्वं पलायथाः ॥५९॥
59. tathā dvaitavane karṇa gandharvaiḥ samabhidrutaḥ ,
kurūnsamagrānutsṛjya prathamaṁ tvaṁ palāyathāḥ.

59. Similarly, O Karna, when attacked by the Gandharvas in Dwaitavana, you were the first to flee, abandoning all the Kurus.
हत्वा जित्वा च गन्धर्वांश्चित्रसेनमुखान्रणे ।
कर्ण दुर्योधनं पार्थः सभार्यं सममोचयत् ॥६०॥
60. hatvā jitvā ca gandharvāṁścitrasenamukhānraṇe ,
karṇa duryodhanaṁ pārthaḥ sabhāryaṁ samamocayat.

60. O Karna, Arjuna, having killed and conquered the Gandharvas led by Chitrasena in battle, freed Duryodhana along with his wife.
पुनः प्रभावः पार्थस्य पुराणः केशवस्य च ।
कथितः कर्ण रामेण सभायां राजसंसदि ॥६१॥
61. punaḥ prabhāvaḥ pārthasya purāṇaḥ keśavasya ca ,
kathitaḥ karṇa rāmeṇa sabhāyāṁ rājasaṁsadi.

61. Again, O Karna, the ancient glory of Arjuna and Krishna (keśava) was recounted by Rama (Paraśurāma) in the assembly before the gathering of kings.
सततं च तदश्रौषीर्वचनं द्रोणभीष्मयोः ।
अवध्यौ वदतोः कृष्णौ संनिधौ वै महीक्षिताम् ॥६२॥
62. satataṁ ca tadaśrauṣīrvacanaṁ droṇabhīṣmayoḥ ,
avadhyau vadatoḥ kṛṣṇau saṁnidhau vai mahīkṣitām.
62. satatam ca tat aśrauṣīḥ vacanam droṇabhīṣmayoḥ
avadhyau vadatoḥ kṛṣṇau saṃnidhau vai mahīkṣitām
62. ca tvam satatam tat vacanam droṇabhīṣmayoḥ aśrauṣīḥ,
vadatoḥ kṛṣṇau avadhyau vai mahīkṣitām saṃnidhau
62. And you constantly heard that statement of Drona and Bhishma, who, in the presence of kings, indeed declared Krishna and Arjuna to be inviolable.
कियन्तं तत्र वक्ष्यामि येन येन धनंजयः ।
त्वत्तोऽतिरिक्तः सर्वेभ्यो भूतेभ्यो ब्राह्मणो यथा ॥६३॥
63. kiyantaṁ tatra vakṣyāmi yena yena dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
tvatto'tiriktaḥ sarvebhyo bhūtebhyo brāhmaṇo yathā.
63. kiyantam tatra vakṣyāmi yena yena dhanaṃjayaḥ tvattaḥ
atiriktaḥ sarvebhyaḥ bhūtebhyaḥ brāhmaṇaḥ yathā
63. tatra kiyantam vakṣyāmi,
yena yena dhanaṃjayaḥ tvattaḥ atiriktaḥ,
yathā brāhmaṇaḥ sarvebhyaḥ bhūtebhyaḥ
63. How much shall I tell you further about that, by which Dhananjaya (Arjuna) is, in every way, superior to you, just as a brahmin is superior to all beings.
इदानीमेव द्रष्टासि प्रधने स्यन्दने स्थितौ ।
पुत्रं च वसुदेवस्य पाण्डवं च धनंजयम् ॥६४॥
64. idānīmeva draṣṭāsi pradhane syandane sthitau ,
putraṁ ca vasudevasya pāṇḍavaṁ ca dhanaṁjayam.

putram ca vasudevasya pāṇḍavam ca dhanaṃjayam
64. idānīm eva tvam pradhane syandane sthitau vasudevasya
putram ca pāṇḍavam dhanaṃjayam ca draṣṭā asi
64. Indeed, right now you will see the son of Vasudeva (Kṛṣṇa) and the Pāṇḍava Dhananjaya (Arjuna) standing in their chariot in battle.
देवासुरमनुष्येषु प्रख्यातौ यौ नरर्षभौ ।
प्रकाशेनाभिविख्यातौ त्वं तु खद्योतवन्नृषु ॥६५॥
65. devāsuramanuṣyeṣu prakhyātau yau nararṣabhau ,
prakāśenābhivikhyātau tvaṁ tu khadyotavannṛṣu.
65. devāsuramanuṣyeṣu prakhyātau yau nararṣabhau
prakāśena abhivikhyātau tvam tu khadyotavat nṛṣu
65. yau devāsuramanuṣyeṣu prakhyātau nararṣabhau (tau) prakāśena abhivikhyātau.
tu tvam nṛṣu khadyotavat
65. Those two, who are renowned as the foremost of men (nararṣabhau) among gods, asuras, and humans, are exceedingly famous for their brilliance. But you, among men, are merely like a firefly.
एवं विद्वान्मावमंस्थाः सूतपुत्राच्युतार्जुनौ ।
नृसिंहौ तौ नरश्वा त्वं जोषमास्स्व विकत्थन ॥६६॥
66. evaṁ vidvānmāvamaṁsthāḥ sūtaputrācyutārjunau ,
nṛsiṁhau tau naraśvā tvaṁ joṣamāssva vikatthana.
66. evam vidvān mā avamamsthāḥ sūtaputra acyutārjunau
nṛsiṃhau tau naraḥ ca tvam joṣam āssva vikatthana
66. sūtaputra vikatthana tvam evam vidvān acyutārjunau mā
avamamsthāḥ tau nṛsiṃhau tvam ca naraḥ joṣam āssva
66. O son of Suta (sūtaputra), having understood this, do not disparage Acyuta (Kṛṣṇa) and Arjuna! Those two are like lions among men (nṛsiṃhau), while you are merely a man. O boastful one (vikatthana), remain silent!
