Your enemies and others likewise engaged in sport and laughter. And repeatedly, these heroes spoke these words to Bhīmasena:

Today, in battle, a very great and difficult deed has been accomplished by you. You have slain the king of the Kauravas, who was excessively exhausted, in battle with your mace.

Indeed, people considered this slaying of the enemy, accomplished by you in the supreme battle, to be like the slaying of Vṛtra by Indra.

Just as, surely, after Vṛtra was slain, the bards praised Indra, similarly, O Bhārata, we rejoice for you, whose enemies have been destroyed.

O Bhārata, know that the hairs on our bodies, which bristled with joy at the slaying of Duryodhana, have not yet ceased to thrill even today. Thus spoke the Vātikas, who were gathered there, to Bhīmasena.

O kings, it is not proper to strike down an enemy who has already been killed. Indeed, this dull-witted person has already been repeatedly struck down by harsh words.

This vilest of men is now no longer fit to be either a friend or an enemy. What is the use of repeatedly urging this one with words, as he is like a block of wood?

Because Abhimanyu, though a mere boy, was killed by many in battle due to your faults, O sinner, therefore you yourself are now killed in battle.

And the Gandharvas played music, and hosts of Apsarases sang. And the Siddhas, O Bhārata, uttered words of praise, saying, 'Excellent! Excellent!'

And a fragrant, sweetly-scented, gentle, and pleasant wind blew. Indeed, the clear sky also shone like a lapis lazuli gem.

Those headed by Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), having witnessed those exceedingly marvelous things (of the Pāṇḍavas), and also having observed the honor shown to Duryodhana, subsequently felt embarrassment.

55.
And having heard that Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Karṇa, and also Bhūriśravas were slain unrighteously (adharma), they (the Pāṇḍavas and their allies), afflicted by grief, indeed lamented.

But seeing those Pāṇḍavas absorbed in worry and dejected in spirit, Kṛṣṇa, whose voice resonated like a deep war-drum, spoke these words.

57.
For this one (referring to a formidable warrior like Droṇa or Bhīṣma), whose weapons are extremely swift, and all those great charioteers (mahārathas) who are valorous in straightforward (ṛjuyuddha) combat, could not possibly be killed by you in battle (āhave) through fair means.

Indeed, these strategies were devised by me, O kings. Otherwise, the Pāṇḍavas would never have achieved victory anywhere.

For all four of them, those great-souled ones and mighty warriors on earth, could not be killed in accordance with natural law (dharma), even by the world-guardians themselves.

Similarly, this mace-wielding and untiring son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra could not be killed in accordance with natural law (dharma) here, even by Yama, the wielder of the rod.

And it should not be held in your hearts that this king was killed improperly. Similarly, many formidable enemies, who were otherwise inviolable, were slain through these strategies.

Having heard the words of Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), the Pāñcālas, along with the Pāṇḍavas, became exceedingly joyful and roared like a multitude of lions.

Then, (they) blew their conch shells, and Mādhava (Kṛṣṇa) blew Pāñcajanya. O best of men (puruṣarṣabhāḥ), (they were) delighted, having seen Duryodhana slain.
