हतं दुर्योधनं दृष्ट्वा भीमसेनेन संयुगे ।
पाण्डवाः सृञ्जयाश्चैव किमकुर्वत संजय ॥१॥
1. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
hataṁ duryodhanaṁ dṛṣṭvā bhīmasenena saṁyuge ,
pāṇḍavāḥ sṛñjayāścaiva kimakurvata saṁjaya.

1. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: 'O Saṃjaya, after seeing Duryodhana killed by Bhīmasena in battle, what then did the Pāṇḍavas and the Sṛñjayas do?'
संजय उवाच ।
हतं दुर्योधनं दृष्ट्वा भीमसेनेन संयुगे ।
सिंहेनेव महाराज मत्तं वनगजं वने ॥२॥
2. saṁjaya uvāca ,
hataṁ duryodhanaṁ dṛṣṭvā bhīmasenena saṁyuge ,
siṁheneva mahārāja mattaṁ vanagajaṁ vane.

saṃyuge | siṃhena iva mahārāja mattam vanagajam vane
2. saṃjaya uvāca mahārāja,

2. Sanjaya said: "O great king, having seen Duryodhana slain by Bhimasena in battle, just as a lion [slays] a rutting wild elephant in the forest."
प्रहृष्टमनसस्तत्र कृष्णेन सह पाण्डवाः ।
पाञ्चालाः सृञ्जयाश्चैव निहते कुरुनन्दने ॥३॥
3. prahṛṣṭamanasastatra kṛṣṇena saha pāṇḍavāḥ ,
pāñcālāḥ sṛñjayāścaiva nihate kurunandane.

3. There, the Pandavas, along with Krishna, and the Panchalas and Srinjayas, became exceedingly joyful in mind when the Kuru prince was slain.
आविध्यन्नुत्तरीयाणि सिंहनादांश्च नेदिरे ।
नैतान्हर्षसमाविष्टानियं सेहे वसुंधरा ॥४॥
4. āvidhyannuttarīyāṇi siṁhanādāṁśca nedire ,
naitānharṣasamāviṣṭāniyaṁ sehe vasuṁdharā.
4. āvidhyan uttariyāṇi siṃhanādān ca nedire |
na etān harṣasamāviṣṭān iyam sehe vasuṃdharā
4. (te) uttariyāṇi āvidhyan ca siṃhanādān nedire
iyam vasuṃdharā harṣasamāviṣṭān etān na sehe
4. They waved their upper garments and roared lion-like roars. This earth (vasuṃdharā) could not bear those people who were filled with such joy.
धनूंष्यन्ये व्याक्षिपन्त ज्याश्चाप्यन्ये तथाक्षिपन् ।
दध्मुरन्ये महाशङ्खानन्ये जघ्नुश्च दुन्दुभीः ॥५॥
5. dhanūṁṣyanye vyākṣipanta jyāścāpyanye tathākṣipan ,
dadhmuranye mahāśaṅkhānanye jaghnuśca dundubhīḥ.
5. dhanūṃṣi anye vyākṣipanta jyāḥ ca api anye tathā akṣipan
| dadhmuḥ anye mahāśaṅkhān anye jaghnuḥ ca dundubhīḥ
5. anye dhanūṃṣi vyākṣipanta,
anye api ca tathā jyāḥ akṣipan anye mahāśaṅkhān dadhmuḥ,
anye ca dundubhīḥ jaghnuḥ
5. Some tossed their bows, and others likewise tossed their bowstrings. Still others blew great conches, and others beat drums.
चिक्रीडुश्च तथैवान्ये जहसुश्च तवाहिताः ।
अब्रुवंश्चासकृद्वीरा भीमसेनमिदं वचः ॥६॥
6. cikrīḍuśca tathaivānye jahasuśca tavāhitāḥ ,
abruvaṁścāsakṛdvīrā bhīmasenamidaṁ vacaḥ.
6. cikrīḍuḥ ca tathā eva anye jahasuḥ ca tava ahitāḥ
abruvan ca asakṛt vīrāḥ bhīmasenam idam vacaḥ
6. tava ahitāḥ ca anye tathā eva cikrīḍuḥ ca jahasuḥ
ca vīrāḥ ca asakṛt bhīmasenam idam vacaḥ abruvan
6. Your enemies and others likewise engaged in sport and laughter. And repeatedly, these heroes spoke these words to Bhīmasena:
दुष्करं भवता कर्म रणेऽद्य सुमहत्कृतम् ।
कौरवेन्द्रं रणे हत्वा गदयातिकृतश्रमम् ॥७॥
7. duṣkaraṁ bhavatā karma raṇe'dya sumahatkṛtam ,
kauravendraṁ raṇe hatvā gadayātikṛtaśramam.
7. duṣkaram bhavatā karma raṇe adya su-mahat kṛtam
kauravendram raṇe hatvā gadayā atikṛtaśramam
7. adya raṇe bhavatā duṣkaram su-mahat karma kṛtam,
(tvayā) raṇe gadayā atikṛtaśramam kauravendram hatvā
7. Today, in battle, a very great and difficult deed has been accomplished by you. You have slain the king of the Kauravas, who was excessively exhausted, in battle with your mace.
इन्द्रेणेव हि वृत्रस्य वधं परमसंयुगे ।
त्वया कृतममन्यन्त शत्रोर्वधमिमं जनाः ॥८॥
8. indreṇeva hi vṛtrasya vadhaṁ paramasaṁyuge ,
tvayā kṛtamamanyanta śatrorvadhamimaṁ janāḥ.
8. indrena iva hi vṛtrasya vadham parama-saṃyuge
tvayā kṛtam amanyanta śatroḥ vadham imam janāḥ
8. janāḥ hi tvayā parama-saṃyuge kṛtam imam śatroḥ
vadham indrena vṛtrasya vadham iva amanyanta
8. Indeed, people considered this slaying of the enemy, accomplished by you in the supreme battle, to be like the slaying of Vṛtra by Indra.
चरन्तं विविधान्मार्गान्मण्डलानि च सर्वशः ।
दुर्योधनमिमं शूरं कोऽन्यो हन्याद्वृकोदरात् ॥९॥
9. carantaṁ vividhānmārgānmaṇḍalāni ca sarvaśaḥ ,
duryodhanamimaṁ śūraṁ ko'nyo hanyādvṛkodarāt.
9. carantam vividhān mārgān maṇḍalāni ca sarvaśaḥ
duryodhanam imam śūram kaḥ anyaḥ hanyāt vṛkodarāt
9. kaḥ anyaḥ vṛkodarāt imām śūram duryodhanam (yaḥ)
vividhān mārgān ca maṇḍalāni sarvaśaḥ carantam hanyāt
9. Who else but Vṛkodara (Bhīma) could have slain this brave Duryodhana, who was skillfully moving in various paths and performing circular maneuvers everywhere?
वैरस्य च गतः पारं त्वमिहान्यैः सुदुर्गमम् ।
अशक्यमेतदन्येन संपादयितुमीदृशम् ॥१०॥
10. vairasya ca gataḥ pāraṁ tvamihānyaiḥ sudurgamam ,
aśakyametadanyena saṁpādayitumīdṛśam.
10. vairasya ca gataḥ pāram tvam iha anyaiḥ sudurgamam
aśakyam etat anyena saṃpādayitum īdṛśam
10. tvam iha anyaiḥ sudurgamam vairasya pāram gataḥ
ca īdṛśam etat anyena saṃpādayitum aśakyam
10. You have reached the end of enmity, a feat extremely difficult for others to overcome. Indeed, such an accomplishment is impossible for anyone else to achieve.
कुञ्जरेणेव मत्तेन वीर संग्राममूर्धनि ।
दुर्योधनशिरो दिष्ट्या पादेन मृदितं त्वया ॥११॥
11. kuñjareṇeva mattena vīra saṁgrāmamūrdhani ,
duryodhanaśiro diṣṭyā pādena mṛditaṁ tvayā.
11. kuñjareṇa iva mattena vīra saṃgrāmamūrdhani
duryodhanaśiraḥ diṣṭyā pādena mṛditam tvayā
11. vīra saṃgrāmamūrdhani mattena kuñjareṇa iva
diṣṭyā tvayā pādena duryodhanaśiraḥ mṛditam
11. O hero, on the battlefield, Duryodhana's head was fortunately crushed by your foot, just like (a foe is crushed) by a frenzied elephant.
सिंहेन महिषस्येव कृत्वा संगरमद्भुतम् ।
दुःशासनस्य रुधिरं दिष्ट्या पीतं त्वयानघ ॥१२॥
12. siṁhena mahiṣasyeva kṛtvā saṁgaramadbhutam ,
duḥśāsanasya rudhiraṁ diṣṭyā pītaṁ tvayānagha.
12. siṃhena mahiṣasya iva kṛtvā saṃgaram adbhutam
duḥśāsanasya rudhiram diṣṭyā pītam tvayā anagha
12. anagha siṃhena mahiṣasya iva adbhutam saṃgaram
kṛtvā diṣṭyā tvayā duḥśāsanasya rudhiram pītam
12. O sinless one (anagha), fortunately, you have drunk Duḥśāsana's blood after performing an astonishing battle, just as a lion (would drink the blood) of a buffalo.
ये विप्रकुर्वन्राजानं धर्मात्मानं युधिष्ठिरम् ।
मूर्ध्नि तेषां कृतः पादो दिष्ट्या ते स्वेन कर्मणा ॥१३॥
13. ye viprakurvanrājānaṁ dharmātmānaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ,
mūrdhni teṣāṁ kṛtaḥ pādo diṣṭyā te svena karmaṇā.
13. ye viprakurvantaḥ rājānam dharmātmānam yudhiṣṭhiram
mūrdhni teṣām kṛtaḥ pādaḥ diṣṭyā te svena karmaṇā
13. diṣṭyā te svena karmaṇā ye dharmātmānam rājānam
yudhiṣṭhiram viprakurvantaḥ teṣām mūrdhni pādaḥ kṛtaḥ
13. Fortunately, by your own actions (karma), your foot has been placed upon the heads of those who insulted King Yudhishthira, the one whose intrinsic nature (dharma) is righteousness.
अमित्राणामधिष्ठानाद्वधाद्दुर्योधनस्य च ।
भीम दिष्ट्या पृथिव्यां ते प्रथितं सुमहद्यशः ॥१४॥
14. amitrāṇāmadhiṣṭhānādvadhādduryodhanasya ca ,
bhīma diṣṭyā pṛthivyāṁ te prathitaṁ sumahadyaśaḥ.
14. amitrāṇām adhiṣṭhānāt vadhāt duryodhanasya ca
bhīma diṣṭyā pṛthivyām te prathitam sumahat yaśaḥ
14. bhīma diṣṭyā amitrāṇām adhiṣṭhānāt duryodhanasya
vadhāt ca pṛthivyām te sumahat prathitam yaśaḥ
14. O Bhīma, fortunately, your exceedingly great glory is renowned on earth, due to the subjugation of your enemies and the slaying of Duryodhana.
एवं नूनं हते वृत्रे शक्रं नन्दन्ति बन्दिनः ।
तथा त्वां निहतामित्रं वयं नन्दाम भारत ॥१५॥
15. evaṁ nūnaṁ hate vṛtre śakraṁ nandanti bandinaḥ ,
tathā tvāṁ nihatāmitraṁ vayaṁ nandāma bhārata.
15. evam nūnam hate vṛtre śakram nandanti bandinaḥ
tathā tvām nihatāmitram vayam nandāma bhārata
15. bhārata nūnam vṛtre hate bandinaḥ śakram evam
nandanti tathā vayam nihatāmitram tvām nandāma
15. Just as, surely, after Vṛtra was slain, the bards praised Indra, similarly, O Bhārata, we rejoice for you, whose enemies have been destroyed.
दुर्योधनवधे यानि रोमाणि हृषितानि नः ।
अद्यापि न विहृष्यन्ति तानि तद्विद्धि भारत ।
इत्यब्रुवन्भीमसेनं वातिकास्तत्र संगताः ॥१६॥
16. duryodhanavadhe yāni romāṇi hṛṣitāni naḥ ,
adyāpi na vihṛṣyanti tāni tadviddhi bhārata ,
ityabruvanbhīmasenaṁ vātikāstatra saṁgatāḥ.
16. duryodhanavadhe yāni romāṇi hṛṣitāni
naḥ adyāpi na vihṛṣyanti tāni
tat viddhi bhārata iti abruvan
bhīmasenam vātikāḥ tatra saṃgatāḥ
16. bhārata naḥ duryodhanavadhe yāni
hṛṣitāni romāṇi tāni adyāpi na
vihṛṣyanti tat viddhi iti tatra
saṃgatāḥ vātikāḥ bhīmasenam abruvan
16. O Bhārata, know that the hairs on our bodies, which bristled with joy at the slaying of Duryodhana, have not yet ceased to thrill even today. Thus spoke the Vātikas, who were gathered there, to Bhīmasena.
तान्हृष्टान्पुरुषव्याघ्रान्पाञ्चालान्पाण्डवैः सह ।
ब्रुवतः सदृशं तत्र प्रोवाच मधुसूदनः ॥१७॥
17. tānhṛṣṭānpuruṣavyāghrānpāñcālānpāṇḍavaiḥ saha ,
bruvataḥ sadṛśaṁ tatra provāca madhusūdanaḥ.
17. tān hṛṣṭān puruṣavyāghrān pāñcālān pāṇḍavaiḥ
saha bruvataḥ sadṛśam tatra provāca madhusūdanaḥ
17. tatra pāṇḍavaiḥ saha bruvataḥ tān hṛṣṭān
puruṣavyāghrān pāñcālān sadṛśam madhusūdanaḥ provāca
17. Then, Madhusūdana (Kṛṣṇa) spoke befittingly to those delighted, foremost among men, the Pāñcālas, who were gathered there with the Pāṇḍavas and had just spoken.
न न्याय्यं निहतः शत्रुर्भूयो हन्तुं जनाधिपाः ।
असकृद्वाग्भिरुग्राभिर्निहतो ह्येष मन्दधीः ॥१८॥
18. na nyāyyaṁ nihataḥ śatrurbhūyo hantuṁ janādhipāḥ ,
asakṛdvāgbhirugrābhirnihato hyeṣa mandadhīḥ.
18. na nyāyyam nihataḥ śatruḥ bhūyaḥ hantum janādhipāḥ
asakṛt vāgbhiḥ ugrābhiḥ nihataḥ hi eṣaḥ mandadhīḥ
18. janādhipāḥ nihataḥ śatruḥ bhūyaḥ hantum na nyāyyam
hi eṣaḥ mandadhīḥ asakṛt ugrābhiḥ vāgbhiḥ nihataḥ
18. O kings, it is not proper to strike down an enemy who has already been killed. Indeed, this dull-witted person has already been repeatedly struck down by harsh words.
तदैवैष हतः पापो यदैव निरपत्रपः ।
लुब्धः पापसहायश्च सुहृदां शासनातिगः ॥१९॥
19. tadaivaiṣa hataḥ pāpo yadaiva nirapatrapaḥ ,
lubdhaḥ pāpasahāyaśca suhṛdāṁ śāsanātigaḥ.
19. tadā eva eṣaḥ hataḥ pāpaḥ yadā eva nirapatrapaḥ
lubdhaḥ pāpasahāyaḥ ca suhṛdām śāsanātigaḥ
19. eṣaḥ pāpaḥ tadā eva hataḥ yadā eva nirapatrapaḥ
lubdhaḥ pāpasahāyaḥ ca suhṛdām śāsanātigaḥ
19. This wicked person was indeed destroyed at the very moment he became shameless, greedy, an accomplice to sin, and disregardful of his friends' counsel.
बहुशो विदुरद्रोणकृपगाङ्गेयसृञ्जयैः ।
पाण्डुभ्यः प्रोच्यमानोऽपि पित्र्यमंशं न दत्तवान् ॥२०॥
20. bahuśo viduradroṇakṛpagāṅgeyasṛñjayaiḥ ,
pāṇḍubhyaḥ procyamāno'pi pitryamaṁśaṁ na dattavān.
20. bahuśaḥ viduradroṇakṛpagāṅgeyasañjayaiḥ pāṇḍubhyaḥ
procyamānaḥ api pitryam aṃśam na dattavān
20. viduradroṇakṛpagāṅgeyasañjayaiḥ bahuśaḥ pāṇḍubhyaḥ
procyamānaḥ api pitryam aṃśam na dattavān
20. Even though he was repeatedly advised by Vidura, Droṇa, Kṛpa, Gāṅgeya, and Sañjaya, he did not grant the Pāṇḍavas their ancestral share.
नैष योग्योऽद्य मित्रं वा शत्रुर्वा पुरुषाधमः ।
किमनेनातिनुन्नेन वाग्भिः काष्ठसधर्मणा ॥२१॥
21. naiṣa yogyo'dya mitraṁ vā śatrurvā puruṣādhamaḥ ,
kimanenātinunnena vāgbhiḥ kāṣṭhasadharmaṇā.
21. na eṣaḥ yogyaḥ adya mitram vā śatruḥ vā puruṣādhamaḥ
kim anena atinunnena vāgbhiḥ kāṣṭhasadharmaṇā
21. adya eṣaḥ puruṣādhamaḥ mitram vā śatruḥ vā yogyaḥ
na kim anena atinunnena vāgbhiḥ kāṣṭhasadharmaṇā
21. This vilest of men is now no longer fit to be either a friend or an enemy. What is the use of repeatedly urging this one with words, as he is like a block of wood?
रथेष्वारोहत क्षिप्रं गच्छामो वसुधाधिपाः ।
दिष्ट्या हतोऽयं पापात्मा सामात्यज्ञातिबान्धवः ॥२२॥
22. ratheṣvārohata kṣipraṁ gacchāmo vasudhādhipāḥ ,
diṣṭyā hato'yaṁ pāpātmā sāmātyajñātibāndhavaḥ.
22. ratheṣu ārohata kṣipram gacchāmaḥ vasudhādhipāḥ
diṣṭyā hataḥ ayam pāpātmā sāmātyajñātibāndhavaḥ
22. vasudhādhipāḥ kṣipram ratheṣu ārohata gacchāmaḥ
diṣṭyā ayam pāpātmā sāmātyajñātibāndhavaḥ hataḥ
22. O kings, quickly mount your chariots; let us go! Fortunately, this wicked soul, along with his ministers, relatives, and kinsmen, has been slain.
इति श्रुत्वा त्वधिक्षेपं कृष्णाद्दुर्योधनो नृपः ।
अमर्षवशमापन्न उदतिष्ठद्विशां पते ॥२३॥
23. iti śrutvā tvadhikṣepaṁ kṛṣṇādduryodhano nṛpaḥ ,
amarṣavaśamāpanna udatiṣṭhadviśāṁ pate.
23. iti śrutvā tu adhikṣepam kṛṣṇāt duryodhanaḥ
nṛpaḥ amarṣavaśam āpannaḥ udatiṣṭhat viśām pate
23. viśām pate iti kṛṣṇāt adhikṣepam śrutvā tu
nṛpaḥ duryodhanaḥ amarṣavaśam āpannaḥ udatiṣṭhat
23. Having heard such an insult from Krishna, King Duryodhana, falling under the sway of indignation, stood up, O lord of men.
स्फिग्देशेनोपविष्टः स दोर्भ्यां विष्टभ्य मेदिनीम् ।
दृष्टिं भ्रूसंकटां कृत्वा वासुदेवे न्यपातयत् ॥२४॥
24. sphigdeśenopaviṣṭaḥ sa dorbhyāṁ viṣṭabhya medinīm ,
dṛṣṭiṁ bhrūsaṁkaṭāṁ kṛtvā vāsudeve nyapātayat.
24. sphigdeśena upaviṣṭaḥ saḥ dorbhyām viṣṭabhya medinīm
dṛṣṭim bhrūsaṃkaṭām kṛtvā vāsudeve nyapātayat
24. saḥ sphigdeśena upaviṣṭaḥ dorbhyām medinīm viṣṭabhya
bhrūsaṃkaṭām dṛṣṭim kṛtvā vāsudeve nyapātayat
24. He sat down, resting on his hip, and propping himself up with his two arms on the ground. Then, with a furrowed brow, he fixed his gaze upon Vasudeva (Krishna).
अर्धोन्नतशरीरस्य रूपमासीन्नृपस्य तत् ।
क्रुद्धस्याशीविषस्येव च्छिन्नपुच्छस्य भारत ॥२५॥
25. ardhonnataśarīrasya rūpamāsīnnṛpasya tat ,
kruddhasyāśīviṣasyeva cchinnapucchasya bhārata.
25. ardhonnataśarīrasya rūpam āsīt nṛpasya tat
kruddhasya āśīviṣasya iva chinnapucchasya bhārata
25. bhārata tat ardhonnataśarīrasya nṛpasya rūpam
āsīt chinnapucchasya kruddhasya āśīviṣasya iva
25. That form of the king, with his body half-raised, was like an enraged venomous snake whose tail has been cut off, O Bhārata.
प्राणान्तकरणीं घोरां वेदनामविचिन्तयन् ।
दुर्योधनो वासुदेवं वाग्भिरुग्राभिरार्दयत् ॥२६॥
26. prāṇāntakaraṇīṁ ghorāṁ vedanāmavicintayan ,
duryodhano vāsudevaṁ vāgbhirugrābhirārdayat.
26. prāṇāntakaraṇīm ghorām vedanām avicintayan
Duryodhanaḥ Vāsudevam vāgbhiḥ ugrābhiḥ ardayat
26. Duryodhanaḥ prāṇāntakaraṇīm ghorām vedanām
avicintayan Vāsudevam ugrābhiḥ vāgbhiḥ ardayat
26. Duryodhana, disregarding the terrible, life-ending pain, tormented Vāsudeva with harsh words.
कंसदासस्य दायाद न ते लज्जास्त्यनेन वै ।
अधर्मेण गदायुद्धे यदहं विनिपातितः ॥२७॥
27. kaṁsadāsasya dāyāda na te lajjāstyanena vai ,
adharmeṇa gadāyuddhe yadahaṁ vinipātitaḥ.
27. kaṃsadāsasya dāyāda na te lajjā asti anena
vai adharmeṇa gadāyuddhe yat aham vinipātitaḥ
27. kaṃsadāsasya dāyāda! te anena vai lajjā na
asti yat aham adharmeṇa gadāyuddhe vinipātitaḥ
27. "Oh heir of Kamsa's slave, do you not feel shame (lajjā) at this, that I was struck down in mace combat by a violation of natural law (adharma)?"
ऊरू भिन्धीति भीमस्य स्मृतिं मिथ्या प्रयच्छता ।
किं न विज्ञातमेतन्मे यदर्जुनमवोचथाः ॥२८॥
28. ūrū bhindhīti bhīmasya smṛtiṁ mithyā prayacchatā ,
kiṁ na vijñātametanme yadarjunamavocathāḥ.
28. ūrū bhindhi iti Bhīmasya smṛtim mithyā prayacchata
kim na vijñātam etat me yat Arjunam avocathāḥ
28. Bhīmasya ūrū bhindhi iti smṛtim mithyā prayacchata
(tvayā) etat me kim na vijñātam yat Arjunam avocathāḥ?
28. "By you, who falsely gave Bhima the instruction, 'Break (his) thighs!', was it not known to me, what you told Arjuna?"
घातयित्वा महीपालानृजुयुद्धान्सहस्रशः ।
जिह्मैरुपायैर्बहुभिर्न ते लज्जा न ते घृणा ॥२९॥
29. ghātayitvā mahīpālānṛjuyuddhānsahasraśaḥ ,
jihmairupāyairbahubhirna te lajjā na te ghṛṇā.

29. "Having caused thousands of kings, who fought fairly, to be killed by many crooked means, you feel no shame (lajjā) and no disgust."
अहन्यहनि शूराणां कुर्वाणः कदनं महत् ।
शिखण्डिनं पुरस्कृत्य घातितस्ते पितामहः ॥३०॥
30. ahanyahani śūrāṇāṁ kurvāṇaḥ kadanaṁ mahat ,
śikhaṇḍinaṁ puraskṛtya ghātitaste pitāmahaḥ.
30. ahani ahani śūrāṇām kurvāṇaḥ kadanam mahat
śikhaṇḍinam puraskṛtya ghātitaḥ te pitāmahaḥ

30. Your grandfather, who was daily causing great slaughter among valiant warriors, was caused to be killed by you, with Śikhaṇḍī placed in front.
अश्वत्थाम्नः सनामानं हत्वा नागं सुदुर्मते ।
आचार्यो न्यासितः शस्त्रं किं तन्न विदितं मम ॥३१॥
31. aśvatthāmnaḥ sanāmānaṁ hatvā nāgaṁ sudurmate ,
ācāryo nyāsitaḥ śastraṁ kiṁ tanna viditaṁ mama.
31. aśvatthāmnaḥ sanāmānam hatvā nāgam sudurmate
ācāryaḥ nyāsitaḥ śastram kim tat na viditam mama

31. O extremely evil-minded one! Is it not known to me how, by killing the elephant named Aśvatthāman, the preceptor (guru) was made to lay down his weapon?
स चानेन नृशंसेन धृष्टद्युम्नेन वीर्यवान् ।
पात्यमानस्त्वया दृष्टो न चैनं त्वमवारयः ॥३२॥
32. sa cānena nṛśaṁsena dhṛṣṭadyumnena vīryavān ,
pātyamānastvayā dṛṣṭo na cainaṁ tvamavārayaḥ.
32. saḥ ca anena nṛśaṃsena dhṛṣṭadyumnena vīryavān
pātyamānaḥ tvayā dṛṣṭaḥ na ca enam tvam avārayaḥ
32. saḥ ca vīryavān dhṛṣṭadyumnena anena nṛśaṃsena
pātyamānaḥ tvayā dṛṣṭaḥ ca tvam enam na avārayaḥ
32. And that mighty warrior, as he was being felled by this cruel Dhṛṣṭadyumna, was seen by you, yet you did not stop him.
वधार्थं पाण्डुपुत्रस्य याचितां शक्तिमेव च ।
घटोत्कचे व्यंसयथाः कस्त्वत्तः पापकृत्तमः ॥३३॥
33. vadhārthaṁ pāṇḍuputrasya yācitāṁ śaktimeva ca ,
ghaṭotkace vyaṁsayathāḥ kastvattaḥ pāpakṛttamaḥ.
33. vadhārtham pāṇḍuputrasya yācitām śaktim eva ca
ghaṭotkace vyaṃsayathāḥ kaḥ tvattaḥ pāpakṛttamaḥ
33. ca tvam pāṇḍuputrasya vadhārtham yācitām śaktim eva
ghaṭotkace vyaṃsayathāḥ kaḥ tvattaḥ pāpakṛttamaḥ
33. And you, indeed, caused the divine power (śakti) weapon, which was sought for the destruction of the son of Pāṇḍu (Arjuna), to be wasted on Ghaṭotkaca. Who is more sinful than you?
छिन्नबाहुः प्रायगतस्तथा भूरिश्रवा बली ।
त्वया निसृष्टेन हतः शैनेयेन दुरात्मना ॥३४॥
34. chinnabāhuḥ prāyagatastathā bhūriśravā balī ,
tvayā nisṛṣṭena hataḥ śaineyena durātmanā.
34. chinna-bāhuḥ prāyagataḥ tathā bhūriśravā balī
tvayā nisṛṣṭena hataḥ śaineyena durātmanā
34. bhūriśravā balī chinna-bāhuḥ tathā prāyagataḥ

34. And the powerful Bhuriśravas, his arms severed and having undertaken a fast unto death, was killed by the wicked-souled Sātyaki, whom you dispatched.
कुर्वाणश्चोत्तमं कर्म कर्णः पार्थजिगीषया ।
व्यंसनेनाश्वसेनस्य पन्नगेन्द्रसुतस्य वै ॥३५॥
35. kurvāṇaścottamaṁ karma karṇaḥ pārthajigīṣayā ,
vyaṁsanenāśvasenasya pannagendrasutasya vai.
35. kurvāṇaḥ ca uttamam karma karṇaḥ pārthajigīṣayā
vyaṃsanena aśvasenasya pannagendrasutasya vai
35. karṇaḥ pārthajigīṣayā uttamam karma kurvāṇaḥ ca

35. And Karna, while performing his supreme deed (karma) with the desire to conquer Arjuna, was indeed afflicted by the misfortune involving Ashvasena, the son of the king of serpents.
पुनश्च पतिते चक्रे व्यसनार्तः पराजितः ।
पातितः समरे कर्णश्चक्रव्यग्रोऽग्रणीर्नृणाम् ॥३६॥
36. punaśca patite cakre vyasanārtaḥ parājitaḥ ,
pātitaḥ samare karṇaścakravyagro'graṇīrnṛṇām.

36. And again, when his chariot wheel had sunk, Karna, afflicted by misfortune and defeated, was struck down in battle while preoccupied with his wheel – he, the foremost leader of men.
यदि मां चापि कर्णं च भीष्मद्रोणौ च संयुगे ।
ऋजुना प्रतियुध्येथा न ते स्याद्विजयो ध्रुवम् ॥३७॥
37. yadi māṁ cāpi karṇaṁ ca bhīṣmadroṇau ca saṁyuge ,
ṛjunā pratiyudhyethā na te syādvijayo dhruvam.
37. yadi mām ca api karṇam ca bhīṣmadroṇau ca saṃyuge
ṛjunā pratiyudhyethā na te syāt vijayaḥ dhruvam
37. yadi saṃyuge mām ca api karṇam ca bhīṣmadroṇau ca ṛjunā pratiyudhyethā,
te vijayaḥ na dhruvam syāt
37. If you were to fight against me, Karna, Bhishma, and Drona fairly in battle, victory would certainly not be yours.
त्वया पुनरनार्येण जिह्ममार्गेण पार्थिवाः ।
स्वधर्ममनुतिष्ठन्तो वयं चान्ये च घातिताः ॥३८॥
38. tvayā punaranāryeṇa jihmamārgeṇa pārthivāḥ ,
svadharmamanutiṣṭhanto vayaṁ cānye ca ghātitāḥ.
38. tvayā punaḥ anāryeṇa jihmamārgeṇa pārthivāḥ
svadharmam anutiṣṭhantaḥ vayam ca anye ca ghātitāḥ
38. anāryeṇa tvayā jihmamārgeṇa punaḥ svadharmam
anutiṣṭhantaḥ pārthivāḥ vayam ca anye ca ghātitāḥ
38. But you, ignoble one, by following a crooked path, have slain kings, and also us and others who were upholding our own intrinsic nature (sva-dharma).
वासुदेव उवाच ।
हतस्त्वमसि गान्धारे सभ्रातृसुतबान्धवः ।
सगणः ससुहृच्चैव पापमार्गमनुष्ठितः ॥३९॥
39. vāsudeva uvāca ,
hatastvamasi gāndhāre sabhrātṛsutabāndhavaḥ ,
sagaṇaḥ sasuhṛccaiva pāpamārgamanuṣṭhitaḥ.

39. Vāsudeva said: O son of Gāndhārī, you who have followed the path of evil, are slain along with your brothers, sons, and relatives, indeed with your retinue and friends.
तवैव दुष्कृतैर्वीरौ भीष्मद्रोणौ निपातितौ ।
कर्णश्च निहतः संख्ये तव शीलानुवर्तकः ॥४०॥
40. tavaiva duṣkṛtairvīrau bhīṣmadroṇau nipātitau ,
karṇaśca nihataḥ saṁkhye tava śīlānuvartakaḥ.
40. tava eva duṣkṛtaiḥ vīrau bhīṣmadroṇau nipātitau
karṇaḥ ca nihataḥ saṅkhye tava śīlānuvartakaḥ
40. tava eva duṣkṛtaiḥ vīrau bhīṣmadroṇau nipātitau;
ca tava śīlānuvartakaḥ karṇaḥ saṅkhye nihataḥ
40. Indeed, by your own misdeeds, the two heroes Bhīṣma and Droṇa were brought down. And Karṇa, who was a follower of your character, was also killed in battle.
याच्यमानो मया मूढ पित्र्यमंशं न दित्ससि ।
पाण्डवेभ्यः स्वराज्यार्धं लोभाच्छकुनिनिश्चयात् ॥४१॥
41. yācyamāno mayā mūḍha pitryamaṁśaṁ na ditsasi ,
pāṇḍavebhyaḥ svarājyārdhaṁ lobhācchakuniniścayāt.
41. yācyamānaḥ mayā mūḍha pitryam aṃśam na ditsasi
pāṇḍavebhyaḥ svarājyārdham lobhāt śakuniniscayāt
41. he mūḍha,
mayā yācyamānaḥ tvam pāṇḍavebhyaḥ pitryam aṃśam svarājyārdham ca lobhāt śakuniniscayāt na ditsasi
41. O foolish one, you do not wish to give the paternal share, which is half of their kingdom, to the Pāṇḍavas, even though I have requested it. This is out of greed and because of Śakuni's resolve.
विषं ते भीमसेनाय दत्तं सर्वे च पाण्डवाः ।
प्रदीपिता जतुगृहे मात्रा सह सुदुर्मते ॥४२॥
42. viṣaṁ te bhīmasenāya dattaṁ sarve ca pāṇḍavāḥ ,
pradīpitā jatugṛhe mātrā saha sudurmate.
42. viṣam te bhīmasenāya dattam sarve ca pāṇḍavāḥ
pradīpitā jatugṛhe mātrā saha sudurmate
42. sudurmate te viṣam bhīmasenāya dattam.
ca sarve pāṇḍavāḥ mātrā saha jatugṛhe pradīpitā.
42. You gave poison to Bhimasena. And all the Pāṇḍavas, along with their mother, were set ablaze in the house of lac, O extremely wicked-minded one!
सभायां याज्ञसेनी च कृष्टा द्यूते रजस्वला ।
तदैव तावद्दुष्टात्मन्वध्यस्त्वं निरपत्रपः ॥४३॥
43. sabhāyāṁ yājñasenī ca kṛṣṭā dyūte rajasvalā ,
tadaiva tāvadduṣṭātmanvadhyastvaṁ nirapatrapaḥ.
43. sabhāyām yājñasenī ca kṛṣṭā dyūte rajasvalā
tadaiva tāvat duṣṭātman vadhyaḥ tvam nirapatrapaḥ
43. duṣṭātman nirapatrapaḥ,
ca dyūte sabhāyām rajasvalā yājñasenī kṛṣṭā.
tāvat tadaiva tvam vadhyaḥ.
43. And in the assembly, Yājñasenī (Draupadī), in a state of menstruation, was dragged by force during the dice game. Therefore, O wicked-minded one, you, O shameless one, should have been killed right at that very moment!
अनक्षज्ञं च धर्मज्ञं सौबलेनाक्षवेदिना ।
निकृत्या यत्पराजैषीस्तस्मादसि हतो रणे ॥४४॥
44. anakṣajñaṁ ca dharmajñaṁ saubalenākṣavedinā ,
nikṛtyā yatparājaiṣīstasmādasi hato raṇe.
44. anakṣajñam ca dharmajñam saubalena akṣavedinā
nikṛtyā yat parājaiṣīḥ tasmāt asi hataḥ raṇe
44. yat ca anakṣajñam dharmajñam saubalena akṣavedinā nikṛtyā parājaiṣīḥ,
tasmāt raṇe hataḥ asi.
44. Because you deceitfully defeated the one (Yudhiṣṭhira) who, though unfamiliar with dice, was knowledgeable in (natural) law (dharma), by means of Saubala (Śakuni), who was an expert in dice, therefore you are now slain in battle.
जयद्रथेन पापेन यत्कृष्णा क्लेशिता वने ।
यातेषु मृगयां तेषु तृणबिन्दोरथाश्रमे ॥४५॥
45. jayadrathena pāpena yatkṛṣṇā kleśitā vane ,
yāteṣu mṛgayāṁ teṣu tṛṇabindorathāśrame.
45. jayadrathena pāpena yat kṛṣṇā kleśitā vane
yāteṣu mṛgayām teṣu tṛṇabindoḥ atha āśrame
45. yat pāpena jayadrathena vane kṛṣṇā kleśitā,
teṣu mṛgayām yāteṣu,
atha tṛṇabindoḥ āśrame (idam abhavat).
45. Because Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) was tormented in the forest by the wicked Jayadratha, when they (the Pāṇḍavas) had gone hunting, and this occurred in the hermitage (āśrama) of Tṛṇabindu.
अभिमन्युश्च यद्बाल एको बहुभिराहवे ।
त्वद्दोषैर्निहतः पाप तस्मादसि हतो रणे ॥४६॥
46. abhimanyuśca yadbāla eko bahubhirāhave ,
tvaddoṣairnihataḥ pāpa tasmādasi hato raṇe.
46. Abhimanyuḥ ca yat bālaḥ ekaḥ bahubhiḥ āhave
tvaddoṣaiḥ nihataḥ pāpa tasmāt asi hataḥ raṇe
46. pāpa tvaddoṣaiḥ yat Abhimanyuḥ ca ekaḥ bālaḥ
bahubhiḥ āhave nihataḥ tasmāt asi hataḥ raṇe
46. Because Abhimanyu, though a mere boy, was killed by many in battle due to your faults, O sinner, therefore you yourself are now killed in battle.
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
अधीतं विधिवद्दत्तं भूः प्रशास्ता ससागरा ।
मूर्ध्नि स्थितममित्राणां को नु स्वन्ततरो मया ॥४७॥
47. duryodhana uvāca ,
adhītaṁ vidhivaddattaṁ bhūḥ praśāstā sasāgarā ,
mūrdhni sthitamamitrāṇāṁ ko nu svantataro mayā.
47. Duryodhana uvāca adhītam vidhivat dattam bhūḥ praśāstā

47. Duryodhana said: "I have studied properly, given generously, and ruled the entire earth, including its oceans. I have stood victorious over my enemies. Who, then, is happier than I?"
यदिष्टं क्षत्रबन्धूनां स्वधर्ममनुपश्यताम् ।
तदिदं निधनं प्राप्तं को नु स्वन्ततरो मया ॥४८॥
48. yadiṣṭaṁ kṣatrabandhūnāṁ svadharmamanupaśyatām ,
tadidaṁ nidhanaṁ prāptaṁ ko nu svantataro mayā.
48. yat iṣṭam kṣatrabandhūnām svadharmam anupaśyatām
tat idam nidhanam prāptam kaḥ nu svantataraḥ mayā
48. idam nidhanam prāptam yat kṣatrabandhūnām svadharmam
anupaśyatām iṣṭam kaḥ nu mayā svantataraḥ
48. This desired death, which is sought by those of warrior descent (kṣatrabandhū) who follow their own natural law (svadharma), I have now obtained. Who, then, is happier than I?
देवार्हा मानुषा भोगाः प्राप्ता असुलभा नृपैः ।
ऐश्वर्यं चोत्तमं प्राप्तं को नु स्वन्ततरो मया ॥४९॥
49. devārhā mānuṣā bhogāḥ prāptā asulabhā nṛpaiḥ ,
aiśvaryaṁ cottamaṁ prāptaṁ ko nu svantataro mayā.
49. devārhāḥ mānuṣāḥ bhogāḥ prāptāḥ asulabhāḥ nṛpaiḥ
aiśvaryam ca uttamam prāptam kaḥ nu svantataraḥ mayā

uttamam aiśvaryam ca prāptam kaḥ nu mayā svantataraḥ
49. I obtained human enjoyments (bhogāḥ) that are worthy of gods and difficult for other kings to acquire. I also attained supreme sovereignty. Who, then, is happier than I?
ससुहृत्सानुबन्धश्च स्वर्गं गन्ताहमच्युत ।
यूयं विहतसंकल्पाः शोचन्तो वर्तयिष्यथ ॥५०॥
50. sasuhṛtsānubandhaśca svargaṁ gantāhamacyuta ,
yūyaṁ vihatasaṁkalpāḥ śocanto vartayiṣyatha.
50. sasuhṛt sānubandhaḥ ca svargam gantā aham acyuta
yūyam vihatasaṃkalpāḥ śocantaḥ vartayiṣyatha
50. acyuta aham sasuhṛt sānubandhaḥ ca svargam gantā
yūyam vihatasaṃkalpāḥ śocantaḥ vartayiṣyatha
50. O Acyuta, I shall go to heaven with my friends and relatives. You all, however, with your resolves shattered, will live on lamenting.
संजय उवाच ।
अस्य वाक्यस्य निधने कुरुराजस्य भारत ।
अपतत्सुमहद्वर्षं पुष्पाणां पुण्यगन्धिनाम् ॥५१॥
51. saṁjaya uvāca ,
asya vākyasya nidhane kururājasya bhārata ,
apatatsumahadvarṣaṁ puṣpāṇāṁ puṇyagandhinām.

bhārata apatat sumahat varṣam puṣpāṇām puṇyagandhinām

51. Sañjaya said: O Bhārata, at the conclusion of this speech by the king of the Kurus, a great shower of sweetly fragrant flowers fell.
अवादयन्त गन्धर्वा जगुश्चाप्सरसां गणाः ।
सिद्धाश्च मुमुचुर्वाचः साधु साध्विति भारत ॥५२॥
52. avādayanta gandharvā jaguścāpsarasāṁ gaṇāḥ ,
siddhāśca mumucurvācaḥ sādhu sādhviti bhārata.
52. avādayanta gandharvāḥ jaguḥ ca apsarasām gaṇāḥ
siddhāḥ ca mumucuḥ vācaḥ sādhu sādhu iti bhārata
52. gandharvāḥ avādayanta ca apsarasām gaṇāḥ jaguḥ ca
bhārata siddhāḥ ca sādhu sādhu iti vācaḥ mumucuḥ
52. And the Gandharvas played music, and hosts of Apsarases sang. And the Siddhas, O Bhārata, uttered words of praise, saying, 'Excellent! Excellent!'
ववौ च सुरभिर्वायुः पुण्यगन्धो मृदुः सुखः ।
व्यराजतामलं चैव नभो वैडूर्यसंनिभम् ॥५३॥
53. vavau ca surabhirvāyuḥ puṇyagandho mṛduḥ sukhaḥ ,
vyarājatāmalaṁ caiva nabho vaiḍūryasaṁnibham.
53. vavau ca surabhiḥ vāyuḥ puṇyagandhaḥ mṛduḥ sukhaḥ
vyarājat amalam ca eva nabhaḥ vaiḍūryasaṃnibham
53. ca surabhiḥ puṇyagandhaḥ mṛduḥ sukhaḥ vāyuḥ vavau
amalam nabhaḥ ca eva vaiḍūryasaṃnibham vyarājat
53. And a fragrant, sweetly-scented, gentle, and pleasant wind blew. Indeed, the clear sky also shone like a lapis lazuli gem.
अत्यद्भुतानि ते दृष्ट्वा वासुदेवपुरोगमाः ।
दुर्योधनस्य पूजां च दृष्ट्वा व्रीडामुपागमन् ॥५४॥
54. atyadbhutāni te dṛṣṭvā vāsudevapurogamāḥ ,
duryodhanasya pūjāṁ ca dṛṣṭvā vrīḍāmupāgaman.
54. atyadbhutāni te dṛṣṭvā vāsudevapurōgamāḥ
duryodhanasya pūjām ca dṛṣṭvā vrīḍām upāgaman

54. Those headed by Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), having witnessed those exceedingly marvelous things (of the Pāṇḍavas), and also having observed the honor shown to Duryodhana, subsequently felt embarrassment.
हतांश्चाधर्मतः श्रुत्वा शोकार्ताः शुशुचुर्हि ते ।
भीष्मं द्रोणं तथा कर्णं भूरिश्रवसमेव च ॥५५॥
55. hatāṁścādharmataḥ śrutvā śokārtāḥ śuśucurhi te ,
bhīṣmaṁ droṇaṁ tathā karṇaṁ bhūriśravasameva ca.
55. hatān ca adharmataḥ śrutvā śokārtāḥ śuśucur hi te
bhīṣmam droṇam tathā karṇam bhūriśravasam eva ca
55. adharmataḥ hatān ca bhīṣmam droṇam tathā karṇam bhūriśravasam eva ca śrutvā,
te śokārtāḥ hi śuśucuḥ
55. And having heard that Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Karṇa, and also Bhūriśravas were slain unrighteously (adharma), they (the Pāṇḍavas and their allies), afflicted by grief, indeed lamented.
तांस्तु चिन्तापरान्दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवान्दीनचेतसः ।
प्रोवाचेदं वचः कृष्णो मेघदुन्दुभिनिस्वनः ॥५६॥
56. tāṁstu cintāparāndṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavāndīnacetasaḥ ,
provācedaṁ vacaḥ kṛṣṇo meghadundubhinisvanaḥ.
56. tān tu cintāparān dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavān dīnacetasaḥ
provāca idam vacaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ meghadundubhinisvanaḥ
56. kṛṣṇaḥ meghadundubhinisvanaḥ tu tān cintāparān
dīnacetasaḥ pāṇḍavān dṛṣṭvā idam vacaḥ provāca
56. But seeing those Pāṇḍavas absorbed in worry and dejected in spirit, Kṛṣṇa, whose voice resonated like a deep war-drum, spoke these words.
नैष शक्योऽतिशीघ्रास्त्रस्ते च सर्वे महारथाः ।
ऋजुयुद्धेन विक्रान्ता हन्तुं युष्माभिराहवे ॥५७॥
57. naiṣa śakyo'tiśīghrāstraste ca sarve mahārathāḥ ,
ṛjuyuddhena vikrāntā hantuṁ yuṣmābhirāhave.
57. na eṣaḥ śakyaḥ atiśīghrāstraḥ te ca sarve mahārathāḥ
ṛjuyuddhena vikrāntāḥ hantum yuṣmābhiḥ āhave
57. eṣaḥ atiśīghrāstraḥ ca te sarve ṛjuyuddhena
vikrāntāḥ mahārathāḥ yuṣmābhiḥ āhave hantum na śakyaḥ
57. For this one (referring to a formidable warrior like Droṇa or Bhīṣma), whose weapons are extremely swift, and all those great charioteers (mahārathas) who are valorous in straightforward (ṛjuyuddha) combat, could not possibly be killed by you in battle (āhave) through fair means.
उपाया विहिता ह्येते मया तस्मान्नराधिपाः ।
अन्यथा पाण्डवेयानां नाभविष्यज्जयः क्वचित् ॥५८॥
58. upāyā vihitā hyete mayā tasmānnarādhipāḥ ,
anyathā pāṇḍaveyānāṁ nābhaviṣyajjayaḥ kvacit.
58. upāyāḥ vihitāḥ hi ete mayā tasmāt narādhipāḥ
anyathā pāṇḍaveyānām na abhaviṣyat jayaḥ kvacit
58. narādhipāḥ hi ete upāyāḥ mayā vihitāḥ tasmāt
anyathā pāṇḍaveyānām jayaḥ kvacit na abhaviṣyat
58. Indeed, these strategies were devised by me, O kings. Otherwise, the Pāṇḍavas would never have achieved victory anywhere.
ते हि सर्वे महात्मानश्चत्वारोऽतिरथा भुवि ।
न शक्या धर्मतो हन्तुं लोकपालैरपि स्वयम् ॥५९॥
59. te hi sarve mahātmānaścatvāro'tirathā bhuvi ,
na śakyā dharmato hantuṁ lokapālairapi svayam.
59. te hi sarve mahātmānaḥ catvāraḥ atirathāḥ bhuvi
na śakyāḥ dharmataḥ hantum lokapālaiḥ api svayam
59. hi bhuvi te sarve catvāraḥ mahātmānaḥ atirathāḥ
lokapālaiḥ api svayam dharmataḥ hantum na śakyāḥ
59. For all four of them, those great-souled ones and mighty warriors on earth, could not be killed in accordance with natural law (dharma), even by the world-guardians themselves.
तथैवायं गदापाणिर्धार्तराष्ट्रो गतक्लमः ।
न शक्यो धर्मतो हन्तुं कालेनापीह दण्डिना ॥६०॥
60. tathaivāyaṁ gadāpāṇirdhārtarāṣṭro gataklamaḥ ,
na śakyo dharmato hantuṁ kālenāpīha daṇḍinā.
60. tathā eva ayam gadāpāṇiḥ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ gataklamaḥ
na śakyaḥ dharmataḥ hantum kālena api iha daṇḍinā
60. tathā eva ayam gadāpāṇiḥ gataklamaḥ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ
iha kālena daṇḍinā api dharmataḥ hantum na śakyaḥ
60. Similarly, this mace-wielding and untiring son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra could not be killed in accordance with natural law (dharma) here, even by Yama, the wielder of the rod.
न च वो हृदि कर्तव्यं यदयं घातितो नृपः ।
मिथ्यावध्यास्तथोपायैर्बहवः शत्रवोऽधिकाः ॥६१॥
61. na ca vo hṛdi kartavyaṁ yadayaṁ ghātito nṛpaḥ ,
mithyāvadhyāstathopāyairbahavaḥ śatravo'dhikāḥ.
61. na ca vaḥ hṛdi kartavyam yat ayam ghātitaḥ nṛpaḥ
mithyā avadhyāḥ tathā upāyaiḥ bahavaḥ śatravaḥ adhikāḥ
61. ca vaḥ hṛdi na kartavyam yat ayam nṛpaḥ mithyā ghātitaḥ
tathā bahavaḥ adhikāḥ avadhyāḥ śatravaḥ upāyaiḥ
61. And it should not be held in your hearts that this king was killed improperly. Similarly, many formidable enemies, who were otherwise inviolable, were slain through these strategies.
पूर्वैरनुगतो मार्गो देवैरसुरघातिभिः ।
सद्भिश्चानुगतः पन्थाः स सर्वैरनुगम्यते ॥६२॥
62. pūrvairanugato mārgo devairasuraghātibhiḥ ,
sadbhiścānugataḥ panthāḥ sa sarvairanugamyate.
62. pūrvaiḥ anugataḥ mārgaḥ devaiḥ asuraghātibhiḥ
sadbhiḥ ca anugataḥ panthāḥ saḥ sarvaiḥ anugamyate
62. saḥ mārgaḥ panthāḥ pūrvaiḥ asuraghātibhiḥ
devaiḥ ca sadbhiḥ anugataḥ sarvaiḥ anugamyate
62. The path trodden by the ancients, by the gods who vanquish the asuras, and the way followed by the virtuous - that (path) should be followed by everyone.
कृतकृत्याः स्म सायाह्ने निवासं रोचयामहे ।
साश्वनागरथाः सर्वे विश्रमामो नराधिपाः ॥६३॥
63. kṛtakṛtyāḥ sma sāyāhne nivāsaṁ rocayāmahe ,
sāśvanāgarathāḥ sarve viśramāmo narādhipāḥ.
63. kṛtakṛtyāḥ sma sāyāhne nivāsam rocayāmahe
sāśvanāgarathāḥ sarve viśramāmaḥ narādhipāḥ
63. narādhipāḥ sarve kṛtakṛtyāḥ sma sāyāhne
nivāsam rocayāmahe sāśvanāgarathāḥ viśramāmaḥ
63. We have accomplished our duties, and it is evening; we wish to take up residence. All of us, O kings, with our horses, elephants, and chariots, let us rest.
वासुदेववचः श्रुत्वा तदानीं पाण्डवैः सह ।
पाञ्चाला भृशसंहृष्टा विनेदुः सिंहसंघवत् ॥६४॥
64. vāsudevavacaḥ śrutvā tadānīṁ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha ,
pāñcālā bhṛśasaṁhṛṣṭā vineduḥ siṁhasaṁghavat.
64. vāsudevavacaḥ śrutvā tadānīm pāṇḍavaiḥ saha
pāñcālāḥ bhṛśasaṃhṛṣṭāḥ vineduḥ siṃhasaṃghavat
64. tadānīm pāṇḍavaiḥ saha pāñcālāḥ vāsudevavacaḥ
śrutvā bhṛśasaṃhṛṣṭāḥ siṃhasaṃghavat vineduḥ
64. Having heard the words of Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), the Pāñcālas, along with the Pāṇḍavas, became exceedingly joyful and roared like a multitude of lions.
ततः प्राध्मापयञ्शङ्खान्पाञ्चजन्यं च माधवः ।
हृष्टा दुर्योधनं दृष्ट्वा निहतं पुरुषर्षभाः ॥६५॥
65. tataḥ prādhmāpayañśaṅkhānpāñcajanyaṁ ca mādhavaḥ ,
hṛṣṭā duryodhanaṁ dṛṣṭvā nihataṁ puruṣarṣabhāḥ.
65. tataḥ prādhmāpayan śaṅkhān pāñcajanyam ca mādhavaḥ
hṛṣṭāḥ duryodhanam dṛṣṭvā nihatam puruṣarṣabhāḥ
65. puruṣarṣabhāḥ tataḥ śaṅkhān prādhmāpayan ca mādhavaḥ
pāñcajanyam duryodhanam nihatam dṛṣṭvā hṛṣṭāḥ
65. Then, (they) blew their conch shells, and Mādhava (Kṛṣṇa) blew Pāñcajanya. O best of men (puruṣarṣabhāḥ), (they were) delighted, having seen Duryodhana slain.
