वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्या भीमसेनोऽथ भीतवत् ।
गान्धारीं प्रत्युवाचेदं वचः सानुनयं तदा ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tacchrutvā vacanaṁ tasyā bhīmaseno'tha bhītavat ,
gāndhārīṁ pratyuvācedaṁ vacaḥ sānunayaṁ tadā.
1. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tat śrutvā vacanam tasyāḥ bhīmasenaḥ atha
bhītavat gāndhārīm prati uvāca idam vacaḥ sānanuyam tadā
1. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tadā tasyāḥ वचनम् श्रुत्वा अथ
भीतवत् भीमसेनः सानुनयम् इदम् वचः गान्धारीम् प्रति उवाच
1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Then, having heard her words, Bhīmasena, as if frightened, humbly replied to Gāndhārī with these words.
अधर्मो यदि वा धर्मस्त्रासात्तत्र मया कृतः ।
आत्मानं त्रातुकामेन तन्मे त्वं क्षन्तुमर्हसि ॥२॥
2. adharmo yadi vā dharmastrāsāttatra mayā kṛtaḥ ,
ātmānaṁ trātukāmena tanme tvaṁ kṣantumarhasi.
2. adharmaḥ yadi vā dharmaḥ trāsāt tatra mayā kṛtaḥ
ātmānam trātukāmena tat me tvam kṣantum arhasi
2. yadi mayā tatra trāsāt ātmānam trātukāmena adharmaḥ vā dharmaḥ kṛtaḥ,
tat tvam me kṣantum arhasi
2. If an act of unrighteousness, or even a righteous act (dharma), was done by me there out of fear, motivated by the desire to save my own self (ātman), then you ought to forgive me for that.
न हि युद्धेन पुत्रस्ते धर्मेण स महाबलः ।
शक्यः केनचिदुद्यन्तुमतो विषममाचरम् ॥३॥
3. na hi yuddhena putraste dharmeṇa sa mahābalaḥ ,
śakyaḥ kenacidudyantumato viṣamamācaram.
3. na hi yuddhena putraḥ te dharmeṇa saḥ mahābalaḥ
śakyaḥ kenacit udyantum ataḥ viṣamam ācaram
3. hi te putraḥ saḥ mahābalaḥ yuddhena dharmeṇa vā kenacit उद्यन्तुम् न शक्यः अतः अहम् विषमम् आचरम् ।
3. Indeed, your son, that very mighty one, could not be overcome by anyone through righteous means (dharma) or by direct battle; therefore, I performed an unfair act.
सैन्यस्यैकोऽवशिष्टोऽयं गदायुद्धे च वीर्यवान् ।
मां हत्वा न हरेद्राज्यमिति चैतत्कृतं मया ॥४॥
4. sainyasyaiko'vaśiṣṭo'yaṁ gadāyuddhe ca vīryavān ,
māṁ hatvā na haredrājyamiti caitatkṛtaṁ mayā.
4. sainyasya ekaḥ avaśiṣṭaḥ ayam gadāyuddhe ca vīryavān
mām hatvā na haret rājyam iti ca etat kṛtam mayā
4. ayam sainyasya ekaḥ avaśiṣṭaḥ ca gadāyuddhe vīryavān.
mām hatvā rājyam na haret.
iti ca etat mayā kṛtam.
4. This one, the only remaining member of the army, and mighty in mace-fighting, would not seize the kingdom after killing me; this (action) was indeed undertaken by me.
राजपुत्रीं च पाञ्चालीमेकवस्त्रां रजस्वलाम् ।
भवत्या विदितं सर्वमुक्तवान्यत्सुतस्तव ॥५॥
5. rājaputrīṁ ca pāñcālīmekavastrāṁ rajasvalām ,
bhavatyā viditaṁ sarvamuktavānyatsutastava.
5. rājaputrīm ca pāñcālīm ekavastrām rajasvalām
bhavatyā viditam sarvam uktavān yat sutaḥ tava
5. ca rājaputrīm pāñcālīm ekavastrām rajasvalām.
yat tava sutaḥ uktavān sarvam bhavatyā viditam.
5. And the princess (rājaputrī) Draupadī (pāñcālī), clad in a single garment, during her menstrual period – all of this, what your son said, is known to you.
सुयोधनमसंगृह्य न शक्या भूः ससागरा ।
केवला भोक्तुमस्माभिरतश्चैतत्कृतं मया ॥६॥
6. suyodhanamasaṁgṛhya na śakyā bhūḥ sasāgarā ,
kevalā bhoktumasmābhirataścaitatkṛtaṁ mayā.
6. suyodhanam asaṃgṛhya na śakyā bhūḥ sasāgarā
kevalā bhoktum asmābhiḥ ataḥ ca etat kṛtam mayā
6. suyodhanam asaṃgṛhya sasāgarā kevalā bhūḥ asmābhiḥ bhoktum na śakyā.
ataḥ ca etat mayā kṛtam.
6. Without securing Suyodhana (Duryodhana), this earth (bhū) with its oceans cannot be enjoyed by us alone. Therefore, this (action) was indeed undertaken by me.
तच्चाप्यप्रियमस्माकं पुत्रस्ते समुपाचरत् ।
द्रौपद्या यत्सभामध्ये सव्यमूरुमदर्शयत् ॥७॥
7. taccāpyapriyamasmākaṁ putraste samupācarat ,
draupadyā yatsabhāmadhye savyamūrumadarśayat.
7. tat ca api apriyam asmākam putraḥ te samupācarat
draupadyāḥ yat sabhāmadhye savyam ūrum adarśayat
7. tat ca api asmākam apriyam.
te putraḥ samupācarat yat draupadyāḥ sabhāmadhye savyam ūrum adarśayat.
7. And that (action), which was also disagreeable to us, your son performed: namely, that he revealed his left thigh to Draupadī in the assembly (sabhā).
तत्रैव वध्यः सोऽस्माकं दुराचारोऽम्ब ते सुतः ।
धर्मराजाज्ञया चैव स्थिताः स्म समये तदा ॥८॥
8. tatraiva vadhyaḥ so'smākaṁ durācāro'mba te sutaḥ ,
dharmarājājñayā caiva sthitāḥ sma samaye tadā.
8. tatra eva vadhyaḥ saḥ asmākam durācāraḥ amba te
sutaḥ dharmarājājñayā ca eva sthitāḥ sma samaye tadā
8. amba te durācāraḥ sutaḥ saḥ asmākam tatra eva vadhyaḥ
tadā ca eva dharmarājājñayā samaye sthitāḥ sma
8. O mother, your ill-behaved son was indeed deserving of death by us right then and there. We then remained committed to the command of the king of righteousness (dharma) at that appointed time.
वैरमुद्धुक्षितं राज्ञि पुत्रेण तव तन्महत् ।
क्लेशिताश्च वने नित्यं तत एतत्कृतं मया ॥९॥
9. vairamuddhukṣitaṁ rājñi putreṇa tava tanmahat ,
kleśitāśca vane nityaṁ tata etatkṛtaṁ mayā.
9. vairam uddhukṣitam rājñi putreṇa tava tat mahat
kleśitāḥ ca vane nityam tataḥ etat kṛtam mayā
9. rājñi tava putreṇa tat mahat vairam uddhukṣitam
ca nityam vane kleśitāḥ tataḥ etat mayā kṛtam
9. O queen, that great enmity was ignited by your son. And because we were constantly tormented in the forest, this action was done by me.
वैरस्यास्य गतः पारं हत्वा दुर्योधनं रणे ।
राज्यं युधिष्ठिरः प्राप्तो वयं च गतमन्यवः ॥१०॥
10. vairasyāsya gataḥ pāraṁ hatvā duryodhanaṁ raṇe ,
rājyaṁ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ prāpto vayaṁ ca gatamanyavaḥ.
10. vairasya asya gataḥ pāram hatvā duryodhanam raṇe
rājyam yudhiṣṭhiraḥ prāptaḥ vayam ca gatamanayavaḥ
10. raṇe duryodhanam hatvā asya vairasya pāram gataḥ
vayam ca gatamanayavaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ rājyam prāptaḥ
10. Having killed Duryodhana in battle, I reached the culmination of this enmity. Yudhiṣṭhira obtained the kingdom, and we are now free from anger.
गान्धार्युवाच ।
न तस्यैष वधस्तात यत्प्रशंससि मे सुतम् ।
कृतवांश्चापि तत्सर्वं यदिदं भाषसे मयि ॥११॥
11. gāndhāryuvāca ,
na tasyaiṣa vadhastāta yatpraśaṁsasi me sutam ,
kṛtavāṁścāpi tatsarvaṁ yadidaṁ bhāṣase mayi.
11. gāndhāriḥ uvāca na tasya eṣaḥ vadhaḥ tāta yat praśaṃsasi
me sutam kṛtavān ca api tat sarvam yat idam bhāṣase mayi
11. gāndhāriḥ uvāca tāta eṣaḥ tasya vadhaḥ na yat me sutam
praśaṃsasi ca api yat idam mayi bhāṣase tat sarvam kṛtavān
11. Gāndhārī spoke: 'O dear one, this killing of his (my son) is not something to be commended, for you praise (your actions against) my son. However, he (Duryodhana) indeed committed all that which you relate to me.'
हताश्वे नकुले यत्तद्वृषसेनेन भारत ।
अपिबः शोणितं संख्ये दुःशासनशरीरजम् ॥१२॥
12. hatāśve nakule yattadvṛṣasenena bhārata ,
apibaḥ śoṇitaṁ saṁkhye duḥśāsanaśarīrajam.
12. hataaśve nakule yat tat vṛṣasenena bhārata
apibaḥ śoṇitam saṅkhye duḥśāsanaśarīrajam
12. bhārata vṛṣasenena nakule hataaśve yat tat
saṅkhye duḥśāsanaśarīrajam śoṇitam apibaḥ
12. O Bhārata, because of Vṛṣasena's act of killing Nakula's horses, you drank the blood from Duḥśāsana's body in battle.
सद्भिर्विगर्हितं घोरमनार्यजनसेवितम् ।
क्रूरं कर्माकरोः कस्मात्तदयुक्तं वृकोदर ॥१३॥
13. sadbhirvigarhitaṁ ghoramanāryajanasevitam ,
krūraṁ karmākaroḥ kasmāttadayuktaṁ vṛkodara.
13. sadbhiḥ vigarhitam ghoram anāryajanasevitam
krūram karma akaroḥ kasmāt tat ayuktam vṛkodara
13. vṛkodara sadbhiḥ vigarhitam ghoram anāryajanasevitam
krūram tat ayuktam karma kasmāt akaroḥ
13. O Vṛkodara, why did you perform that cruel, dreadful, and inappropriate act (karma), which is condemned by virtuous people and practiced by the ignoble?
भीमसेन उवाच ।
अन्यस्यापि न पातव्यं रुधिरं किं पुनः स्वकम् ।
यथैवात्मा तथा भ्राता विशेषो नास्ति कश्चन ॥१४॥
14. bhīmasena uvāca ,
anyasyāpi na pātavyaṁ rudhiraṁ kiṁ punaḥ svakam ,
yathaivātmā tathā bhrātā viśeṣo nāsti kaścana.
14. bhīmasenaḥ uvāca anyasya api na pātavyam rudhiram kim punaḥ
svakam yathā eva ātmā tathā bhrātā viśeṣaḥ na asti kaścana
14. bhīmasenaḥ uvāca anyasya api rudhiram na pātavyam kim punaḥ
svakam yathā eva ātmā tathā bhrātā kaścana viśeṣaḥ na asti
14. Bhīmasena said: One should not drink the blood of another, let alone one's own kin's blood! For a brother is just like one's own self (ātman); there is absolutely no distinction.
रुधिरं न व्यतिक्रामद्दन्तोष्ठं मेऽम्ब मा शुचः ।
वैवस्वतस्तु तद्वेद हस्तौ मे रुधिरोक्षितौ ॥१५॥
15. rudhiraṁ na vyatikrāmaddantoṣṭhaṁ me'mba mā śucaḥ ,
vaivasvatastu tadveda hastau me rudhirokṣitau.
15. rudhiram na vyatikrāmat dantoṣṭham me amba mā śucaḥ
vaivasvataḥ tu tat veda hastau me rudhirokṣitau
15. amba mā śucaḥ rudhiram me dantoṣṭham na vyatikrāmat
tu vaivasvataḥ tat veda me hastau rudhirokṣitau
15. O Mother, do not grieve! The blood did not pass beyond my teeth and lips. Only Vaivasvata (Yama) knows that truth. But my hands are indeed covered with blood.
हताश्वं नकुलं दृष्ट्वा वृषसेनेन संयुगे ।
भ्रातॄणां संप्रहृष्टानां त्रासः संजनितो मया ॥१६॥
16. hatāśvaṁ nakulaṁ dṛṣṭvā vṛṣasenena saṁyuge ,
bhrātṝṇāṁ saṁprahṛṣṭānāṁ trāsaḥ saṁjanito mayā.
16. hatāśvam nakulam dṛṣṭvā vṛṣasenena saṃyuge
bhrātṝṇām saṃprahr̥ṣṭānām trāsaḥ saṃjanitaḥ mayā
16. mayā saṃyuge vṛṣasenena hatāśvam nakulam dṛṣṭvā
saṃprahr̥ṣṭānām bhrātṝṇām trāsaḥ saṃjanitaḥ
16. When I saw Nakula, whose horses had been slain by Vṛṣasena in battle, I instilled fear into the hearts of the (Kaurava) brothers, who had been greatly delighted.
केशपक्षपरामर्शे द्रौपद्या द्यूतकारिते ।
क्रोधाद्यदब्रुवं चाहं तच्च मे हृदि वर्तते ॥१७॥
17. keśapakṣaparāmarśe draupadyā dyūtakārite ,
krodhādyadabruvaṁ cāhaṁ tacca me hṛdi vartate.
17. keśapakṣaparāmarśe draupadyā dyūtakārite krodhāt
yat abruvam ca aham tat ca me hr̥di vartate
17. draupadyā dyūtakārite keśapakṣaparāmarśe yat
aham krodhāt abruvam ca tat ca me hr̥di vartate
17. Whatever I said in anger when Draupadi's hair was seized during the gambling match, that (resolve) also remains in my heart.
क्षत्रधर्माच्च्युतो राज्ञि भवेयं शाश्वतीः समाः ।
प्रतिज्ञां तामनिस्तीर्य ततस्तत्कृतवानहम् ॥१८॥
18. kṣatradharmāccyuto rājñi bhaveyaṁ śāśvatīḥ samāḥ ,
pratijñāṁ tāmanistīrya tatastatkṛtavānaham.
18. kṣatradharmāt cyutaḥ rājñi bhaveyam śāśvatīḥ samāḥ
pratijñām tām anistīrya tataḥ tat kr̥tavān aham
18. rājñi tām pratijñām anistīrya aham kṣatradharmāt
śāśvatīḥ samāḥ cyutaḥ bhaveyam tataḥ tat kr̥tavān
18. O Queen, I would be fallen from my warrior's code (kṣatradharma) for eternal years if I did not fulfill that vow. Therefore, I have indeed carried out that action.
न मामर्हसि गान्धारि दोषेण परिशङ्कितुम् ।
अनिगृह्य पुरा पुत्रानस्मास्वनपकारिषु ॥१९॥
19. na māmarhasi gāndhāri doṣeṇa pariśaṅkitum ,
anigṛhya purā putrānasmāsvanapakāriṣu.
19. na mām arhasi gāndhāri doṣeṇa pariśaṅkitum
anigr̥hya purā putrān asmāsu anapakāriṣu
19. gāndhāri purā asmāsu anapakāriṣu putrān
anigr̥hya mām doṣeṇa pariśaṅkitum na arhasi
19. O Gandhari, you ought not to accuse me of fault, especially since you previously did not restrain your sons when we (the Pāṇḍavas) were doing them no harm.
गान्धार्युवाच ।
वृद्धस्यास्य शतं पुत्रान्निघ्नंस्त्वमपराजितः ।
कस्मान्न शेषयः कंचिद्येनाल्पमपराधितम् ॥२०॥
20. gāndhāryuvāca ,
vṛddhasyāsya śataṁ putrānnighnaṁstvamaparājitaḥ ,
kasmānna śeṣayaḥ kaṁcidyenālpamaparādhitam.
20. gāndhārī uvāca | vṛddhasya asya śatam putrān nighnan tvam
aparājitaḥ | kasmāt na śeṣayaḥ kañcit yena alpam aparādhitam
20. gāndhārī uvāca aparājitaḥ tvam asya vṛddhasya śatam putrān
nighnan kasmāt yena alpam aparādhitam kañcit na śeṣayaḥ?
20. Gandhari said: "You, who are undefeated, having slain the hundred sons of this old man, why do you not spare anyone, even one by whom only a slight offense was committed?"
संतानमावयोस्तात वृद्धयोर्हृतराज्ययोः ।
कथमन्धद्वयस्यास्य यष्टिरेका न वर्जिता ॥२१॥
21. saṁtānamāvayostāta vṛddhayorhṛtarājyayoḥ ,
kathamandhadvayasyāsya yaṣṭirekā na varjitā.
21. saṃtānam āvayoḥ tāta vṛddhayoḥ hṛtarājyayoḥ |
katham andhadvayasya asya yaṣṭiḥ ekā na varjitā
21. tāta,
āvayoḥ vṛddhayoḥ hṛtarājyayoḥ saṃtānam (asti) asya andhadvayasya ekā yaṣṭiḥ katham na varjitā?
21. "O son, concerning the progeny of us two aged ones who have lost our kingdom, how is it that not even a single staff (meaning a son) was spared for this blind couple?"
शेषे ह्यवस्थिते तात पुत्राणामन्तके त्वयि ।
न मे दुःखं भवेदेतद्यदि त्वं धर्ममाचरः ॥२२॥
22. śeṣe hyavasthite tāta putrāṇāmantake tvayi ,
na me duḥkhaṁ bhavedetadyadi tvaṁ dharmamācaraḥ.
22. śeṣe hi avasthite tāta putrāṇām antake tvayi | na
me duḥkham bhavet etat yadi tvam dharmam ācaraḥ
22. tāta,
hi śeṣe avasthite,
putrāṇām antake tvayi,
yadi tvam dharmam ācaraḥ,
etat duḥkham me na bhavet.
22. "O son, if even one (son) had indeed remained, despite you being the annihilator of my sons, this sorrow would not be mine, if you had only practiced your righteous conduct (dharma)."
