युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
पितामहेन विधिवद्यज्ञाः प्रोक्ता महात्मना ।
गुणाश्चैषां यथातत्त्वं प्रेत्य चेह च सर्वशः ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
pitāmahena vidhivadyajñāḥ proktā mahātmanā ,
guṇāścaiṣāṁ yathātattvaṁ pretya ceha ca sarvaśaḥ.

1. Yudhishthira said: The great-souled grandfather has properly described the Vedic rituals (yajñas), along with their true qualities in every respect, both in this world and in the next.
न ते शक्या दरिद्रेण यज्ञाः प्राप्तुं पितामह ।
बहूपकरणा यज्ञा नानासंभारविस्तराः ॥२॥
2. na te śakyā daridreṇa yajñāḥ prāptuṁ pitāmaha ,
bahūpakaraṇā yajñā nānāsaṁbhāravistarāḥ.
2. na te śakyāḥ daridreṇa yajñāḥ prāptum pitāmaha
| bahūpakaraṇāḥ yajñāḥ nānāsaṃbhāravistarāḥ
2. O grandfather, those Vedic rituals (yajñas) cannot be performed by a poor person, for they require many implements and extensive provisions of various kinds.
पार्थिवै राजपुत्रैर्वा शक्याः प्राप्तुं पितामह ।
नार्थन्यूनैरवगुणैरेकात्मभिरसंहतैः ॥३॥
3. pārthivai rājaputrairvā śakyāḥ prāptuṁ pitāmaha ,
nārthanyūnairavaguṇairekātmabhirasaṁhataiḥ.
3. pārthivaiḥ rājaputraiḥ vā śakyāḥ prāptum pitāmaha
| na arthanūnaiḥ avaguṇaiḥ ekātmabhiḥ asaṃhataiḥ
3. O grandfather, these (yajñas) can only be performed by kings or princes; they cannot be accomplished by those deficient in wealth, lacking good qualities, acting alone, or without allies.
यो दरिद्रैरपि विधिः शक्यः प्राप्तुं सदा भवेत् ।
तुल्यो यज्ञफलैरेतैस्तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥४॥
4. yo daridrairapi vidhiḥ śakyaḥ prāptuṁ sadā bhavet ,
tulyo yajñaphalairetaistanme brūhi pitāmaha.
4. yaḥ daridraiḥ api vidhiḥ śakyaḥ prāptum sadā bhavet
| tulyaḥ yajñaphalaiḥ etaiḥ tat me brūhi pitāmaha
4. O grandfather, tell me that method which can always be accomplished even by the poor, and which is equivalent to the results of these (great) Vedic rituals (yajñas).
भीष्म उवाच ।
इदमङ्गिरसा प्रोक्तमुपवासफलात्मकम् ।
विधिं यज्ञफलैस्तुल्यं तन्निबोध युधिष्ठिर ॥५॥
5. bhīṣma uvāca ,
idamaṅgirasā proktamupavāsaphalātmakam ,
vidhiṁ yajñaphalaistulyaṁ tannibodha yudhiṣṭhira.

vidhim yajñaphalaiḥ tulyam tat nibodha yudhiṣṭhira
5. Bhishma said: "O Yudhishthira, understand this method, described by Angiras, which yields the fruits of fasting and is equivalent to the benefits of a (Vedic ritual)."
यस्तु कल्यं तथा सायं भुञ्जानो नान्तरा पिबेत् ।
अहिंसानिरतो नित्यं जुह्वानो जातवेदसम् ॥६॥
6. yastu kalyaṁ tathā sāyaṁ bhuñjāno nāntarā pibet ,
ahiṁsānirato nityaṁ juhvāno jātavedasam.
6. yaḥ tu kalyam tathā sāyam bhuñjānaḥ na antarā
pibet ahiṃsānirataḥ nityam juhvānaḥ jātavedasam
6. And he who eats both in the morning and in the evening, but never drinks in between meals, who is always intent on non-harming (ahiṃsā), and who continually offers oblations to the fire god (Jātavedas)...
षड्भिरेव तु वर्षैः स सिध्यते नात्र संशयः ।
तप्तकाञ्चनवर्णं च विमानं लभते नरः ॥७॥
7. ṣaḍbhireva tu varṣaiḥ sa sidhyate nātra saṁśayaḥ ,
taptakāñcanavarṇaṁ ca vimānaṁ labhate naraḥ.
7. ṣaḍbhiḥ eva tu varṣaiḥ sa sidhyate na atra saṃśayaḥ
tapta kāñcana varṇam ca vimānam labhate naraḥ
7. Such a person achieves success (siddhyate) in just six years; there is no doubt about this. And that individual obtains a celestial vehicle (vimāna) the color of molten gold.
देवस्त्रीणामधीवासे नृत्यगीतनिनादिते ।
प्राजापत्ये वसेत्पद्मं वर्षाणामग्निसंनिभे ॥८॥
8. devastrīṇāmadhīvāse nṛtyagītaninādite ,
prājāpatye vasetpadmaṁ varṣāṇāmagnisaṁnibhe.

prājāpatye vaseta padmam varṣāṇām agnisaṃnibhe
8. He would reside in a lotus (seat) within the abode of divine women, a place resounding with dance and song, in the realm of Prajapati, which is radiant like fire, for countless years.
त्रीणि वर्षाणि यः प्राशेत्सततं त्वेकभोजनम् ।
धर्मपत्नीरतो नित्यमग्निष्टोमफलं लभेत् ॥९॥
9. trīṇi varṣāṇi yaḥ prāśetsatataṁ tvekabhojanam ,
dharmapatnīrato nityamagniṣṭomaphalaṁ labhet.

dharma-patnī-rataḥ nityam agniṣṭoma-phalam labhet

9. Whoever eats only one meal a day continuously for three years, and is always devoted to his lawful wife, attains the reward of the Agniṣṭoma (Vedic ritual).
द्वितीये दिवसे यस्तु प्राश्नीयादेकभोजनम् ।
सदा द्वादशमासांस्तु जुह्वानो जातवेदसम् ।
यज्ञं बहुसुवर्णं वा वासवप्रियमाहरेत् ॥१०॥
10. dvitīye divase yastu prāśnīyādekabhojanam ,
sadā dvādaśamāsāṁstu juhvāno jātavedasam ,
yajñaṁ bahusuvarṇaṁ vā vāsavapriyamāharet.
10. dvitīye divase yaḥ tu prāśnīyāt
eka-bhojanam sadā dvādaśa-māsān tu
juhvānaḥ jāta-vedasam yajñam
bahu-suvarṇam vā vāsava-priyam āharet
10. yaḥ tu dvitīye divase sadā
dvādaśa-māsān eka-bhojanam prāśnīyāt
juhvānaḥ jāta-vedasam bahu-suvarṇam
vā vāsava-priyam yajñam āharet
10. Whoever, for twelve months, continuously eats only one meal on every second day, and always makes offerings to Agni, should perform a (Vedic ritual) (yajña) rich in gold or one beloved by Indra.
सत्यवाग्दानशीलश्च ब्रह्मण्यश्चानसूयकः ।
क्षान्तो दान्तो जितक्रोधः स गच्छति परां गतिम् ॥११॥
11. satyavāgdānaśīlaśca brahmaṇyaścānasūyakaḥ ,
kṣānto dānto jitakrodhaḥ sa gacchati parāṁ gatim.
11. satya-vāk-dāna-śīlaḥ ca brahmaṇyaḥ ca anasūyakaḥ
kṣāntaḥ dāntaḥ jita-krodhaḥ sa gacchati parām gatim
11. saḥ satya-vāk-dāna-śīlaḥ ca brahmaṇyaḥ ca anasūyakaḥ
kṣāntaḥ dāntaḥ jita-krodhaḥ parām gatim gacchati
11. Whoever is truthful in speech, charitable (dāna), pious, not envious, patient, self-controlled, and has conquered anger - that person attains the supreme state.
पाण्डुराभ्रप्रतीकाशे विमाने हंसलक्षणे ।
द्वे समाप्ते ततः पद्मे सोऽप्सरोभिर्वसेत्सह ॥१२॥
12. pāṇḍurābhrapratīkāśe vimāne haṁsalakṣaṇe ,
dve samāpte tataḥ padme so'psarobhirvasetsaha.
12. pāṇḍurābhrāpratīkāśe vimāne haṃsalakṣaṇe dve
samāpte tataḥ padme saḥ apsarobhiḥ vaset saha
12. tataḥ dve padme samāpte saḥ pāṇḍurābhrāpratīkāśe
haṃsalakṣaṇe vimāne apsarobhiḥ saha vaset
12. He dwells together with apsaras in a celestial vehicle (vimāna), which resembles a white cloud and is adorned with swans, after two lotuses are fully attained.
तृतीये दिवसे यस्तु प्राश्नीयादेकभोजनम् ।
सदा द्वादशमासांस्तु जुह्वानो जातवेदसम् ॥१३॥
13. tṛtīye divase yastu prāśnīyādekabhojanam ,
sadā dvādaśamāsāṁstu juhvāno jātavedasam.
13. tṛtīye divase yaḥ tu prāśnīyāt ekabhojanam
sadā dvādaśamāsān tu juhvānaḥ jātavedasam
13. yaḥ tu tṛtīye divase ekabhojanam prāśnīyāt

13. Whoever eats only one meal on the third day, and who continuously offers oblations to Agni (jātavedas) for twelve months...
अतिरात्रस्य यज्ञस्य फलं प्राप्नोत्यनुत्तमम् ।
मयूरहंससंयुक्तं विमानं लभते नरः ॥१४॥
14. atirātrasya yajñasya phalaṁ prāpnotyanuttamam ,
mayūrahaṁsasaṁyuktaṁ vimānaṁ labhate naraḥ.
14. atirātrasya yajñasya phalam prāpnoti anuttamam
mayūrahaṃsasaṃyuktam vimānam labhate naraḥ
14. naraḥ atirātrasya yajñasya anuttamam phalam
prāpnoti mayūrahaṃsasaṃyuktam vimānam labhate
14. That person obtains the unsurpassed fruit of the Atirātra (Vedic ritual). He gains an aerial chariot adorned with peacocks and swans.
सप्तर्षीणां सदा लोके सोऽप्सरोभिर्वसेत्सह ।
निवर्तनं च तत्रास्य त्रीणि पद्मानि वै विदुः ॥१५॥
15. saptarṣīṇāṁ sadā loke so'psarobhirvasetsaha ,
nivartanaṁ ca tatrāsya trīṇi padmāni vai viduḥ.
15. saptarṣīṇām sadā loke saḥ apsarobhiḥ vaset saha
nivartanam ca tatra asya trīṇi padmāni vai viduḥ
15. saḥ sadā saptarṣīṇām loke apsarobhiḥ saha vaset
ca tatra asya nivartanam trīṇi padmāni vai viduḥ
15. He shall always dwell in the realm of the seven sages (saptarṣis) alongside the Apsaras. Indeed, they know the extent of his stay there to be three padmas.
दिवसे यश्चतुर्थे तु प्राश्नीयादेकभोजनम् ।
सदा द्वादशमासान्वै जुह्वानो जातवेदसम् ॥१६॥
16. divase yaścaturthe tu prāśnīyādekabhojanam ,
sadā dvādaśamāsānvai juhvāno jātavedasam.
16. divase yaḥ ca caturthe tu prāśnīyāt ekabhojanam
sadā dvādaśamāsān vai juhvānaḥ jātavedasam
16. yaḥ ca caturthe divase tu ekabhojanam prāśnīyāt
sadā dvādaśamāsān vai jātavedasam juhvānaḥ
16. And whoever eats only one meal on the fourth day, and who continuously offers oblations to Agni (jātavedas) for twelve months...
वाजपेयस्य यज्ञस्य फलं प्राप्नोत्यनुत्तमम् ।
इन्द्रकन्याभिरूढं च विमानं लभते नरः ॥१७॥
17. vājapeyasya yajñasya phalaṁ prāpnotyanuttamam ,
indrakanyābhirūḍhaṁ ca vimānaṁ labhate naraḥ.
17. vājapeyasya yajñasya phalam prāpnoti anuttamam
indrakanyābhiḥ ūḍham ca vimānam labhate naraḥ
17. naraḥ vājapeyasya yajñasya anuttamam phalam
prāpnoti ca indrakanyābhiḥ ūḍham vimānam labhate
17. A person obtains the unsurpassed reward of the Vājapeya (yajña), and he receives a celestial chariot borne by the daughters of Indra.
सागरस्य च पर्यन्ते वासवं लोकमावसेत् ।
देवराजस्य च क्रीडां नित्यकालमवेक्षते ॥१८॥
18. sāgarasya ca paryante vāsavaṁ lokamāvaset ,
devarājasya ca krīḍāṁ nityakālamavekṣate.
18. sāgarasya ca paryante vāsavam lokam āvaset
devarājasya ca krīḍām nityakālam avekṣate
18. ca sāgarasya paryante vāsavam lokam āvaset
ca devarājasya krīḍām nityakālam avekṣate
18. And at the ocean's edge, he would reside in the realm (loka) of Vasava (Indra) and constantly observe the divine sport of the king of gods.
दिवसे पञ्चमे यस्तु प्राश्नीयादेकभोजनम् ।
सदा द्वादशमासांस्तु जुह्वानो जातवेदसम् ॥१९॥
19. divase pañcame yastu prāśnīyādekabhojanam ,
sadā dvādaśamāsāṁstu juhvāno jātavedasam.
19. divase pañcame yaḥ tu prāśnīyāt ekabhojanam
sadā dvādaśamāsān tu juhvānaḥ jātavedasam
19. yaḥ tu pañcame divase ekabhojanam prāśnīyāt
ca sadā dvādaśamāsān jātavedasam juhvānaḥ
19. And whoever eats only one meal on the fifth day, and continuously offers oblations to Agni (jātavedas) for twelve months...
अलुब्धः सत्यवादी च ब्रह्मण्यश्चाविहिंसकः ।
अनसूयुरपापस्थो द्वादशाहफलं लभेत् ॥२०॥
20. alubdhaḥ satyavādī ca brahmaṇyaścāvihiṁsakaḥ ,
anasūyurapāpastho dvādaśāhaphalaṁ labhet.
20. alubdhaḥ satyavādī ca brāhmaṇyaḥ ca avihiṃsakaḥ
anasūyuḥ apāpasthaḥ dvādaśāhaphalam labhet
20. alubdhaḥ satyavādī ca brāhmaṇyaḥ ca avihiṃsakaḥ
anasūyuḥ apāpasthaḥ dvādaśāhaphalam labhet
20. A person who is free from greed, speaks the truth, is devoted to sacred knowledge (brāhmaṇya), non-violent, non-envious, and free from sin, would obtain the reward of a twelve-day ritual.
जाम्बूनदमयं दिव्यं विमानं हंसलक्षणम् ।
सूर्यमालासमाभासमारोहेत्पाण्डुरं गृहम् ॥२१॥
21. jāmbūnadamayaṁ divyaṁ vimānaṁ haṁsalakṣaṇam ,
sūryamālāsamābhāsamārohetpāṇḍuraṁ gṛham.
21. jāmbūnadamayam divyam vimānam haṃsalakṣaṇam
sūryamālāsamābhāsam ārohet pāṇḍuram gṛham
21. jāmbūnadamayam divyam haṃsalakṣaṇam
sūryamālāsamābhāsam pāṇḍuram gṛham vimānam ārohet
21. One should ascend the divine aerial car, made of pure gold, marked with swans, shining brightly like a garland of suns, a brilliant white abode.
आवर्तनानि चत्वारि तथा पद्मानि द्वादश ।
शराग्निपरिमाणं च तत्रासौ वसते सुखम् ॥२२॥
22. āvartanāni catvāri tathā padmāni dvādaśa ,
śarāgniparimāṇaṁ ca tatrāsau vasate sukham.
22. āvartanāni catvāri tathā padmāni dvādaśa
śarāgniparimāṇam ca tatra asau vasate sukham
22. tatra catvāri āvartanāni tathā dvādaśa padmāni ca śarāgniparimāṇam (asti),
asau sukham vasate
22. There are four revolutions (or sections), and twelve lotuses (or lotus-shaped divisions), and a measure of thirty-five; there he dwells happily.
दिवसे यस्तु षष्ठे वै मुनिः प्राशेत भोजनम् ।
सदा द्वादशमासान्वै जुह्वानो जातवेदसम् ॥२३॥
23. divase yastu ṣaṣṭhe vai muniḥ prāśeta bhojanam ,
sadā dvādaśamāsānvai juhvāno jātavedasam.
23. divase yaḥ tu ṣaṣṭhe vai muniḥ prāśeta bhojanam
sadā dvādaśamāsān vai juhvānaḥ jātavedasam
23. yaḥ muniḥ ṣaṣṭhe divase tu vai bhojanam prāśeta,
(saḥ) sadā dvādaśamāsān vai jātavedasam juhvānaḥ (bhavet)
23. Indeed, whichever sage (muni) should eat food only on the sixth day, always offering oblations to Agni (jātavedas) for twelve months.
सदा त्रिषवणस्नायी ब्रह्मचार्यनसूयकः ।
गवामयस्य यज्ञस्य फलं प्राप्नोत्यनुत्तमम् ॥२४॥
24. sadā triṣavaṇasnāyī brahmacāryanasūyakaḥ ,
gavāmayasya yajñasya phalaṁ prāpnotyanuttamam.
24. sadā triṣavaṇasnāyī brahmacārī anasūyakaḥ
gavāmayasya yajñasya phalam prāpnoti anuttamam
24. sadā triṣavaṇasnāyī brahmacārī anasūyakaḥ (saḥ)
gavāmayasya yajñasya anuttamam phalam prāpnoti
24. Always bathing three times a day, observing celibacy (brahmacārin), and free from envy, he obtains the unsurpassed fruit of the gavāmaya (Vedic ritual).
अग्निज्वालासमाभासं हंसबर्हिणसेवितम् ।
शातकुम्भमयं युक्तं साधयेद्यानमुत्तमम् ॥२५॥
25. agnijvālāsamābhāsaṁ haṁsabarhiṇasevitam ,
śātakumbhamayaṁ yuktaṁ sādhayedyānamuttamam.
25. agnijvālāsamābhāsam haṃsabarhiṇasevitam
śātakumbhamayam yuktam sādhayet yānam uttamam
25. uttamam yānam agnijvālāsamābhāsam
haṃsabarhiṇasevitam śātakumbhamayam yuktam sādhayet
25. One should construct an excellent, well-equipped vehicle, shining like a flame, adorned with swans and peacocks, and made of pure gold.
तथैवाप्सरसामङ्के प्रसुप्तः प्रतिबुध्यते ।
नूपुराणां निनादेन मेखलानां च निस्वनैः ॥२६॥
26. tathaivāpsarasāmaṅke prasuptaḥ pratibudhyate ,
nūpurāṇāṁ ninādena mekhalānāṁ ca nisvanaiḥ.
26. tathā eva apsarasām aṅke prasuptaḥ pratibudhyate
nūpurāṇām ninādena mekhalānām ca nisvanaiḥ
26. tathā eva apsarasām aṅke prasuptaḥ nūpurāṇām
mekhalānām ca ninādena nisvanaiḥ pratibudhyate
26. In the same manner, having fallen asleep in the embrace of the celestial nymphs, he awakens to the sound of their anklets and the jingling of their waist-chains.
कोटीसहस्रं वर्षाणां त्रीणि कोटिशतानि च ।
पद्मान्यष्टादश तथा पताके द्वे तथैव च ॥२७॥
27. koṭīsahasraṁ varṣāṇāṁ trīṇi koṭiśatāni ca ,
padmānyaṣṭādaśa tathā patāke dve tathaiva ca.
27. koṭīsahasram varṣāṇām trīṇi koṭiśatāni ca
padmāni aṣṭādaśa tathā patāke dve tathā eva ca
27. varṣāṇām koṭīsahasram ca trīṇi koṭiśatāni ca
aṣṭādaśa padmāni tathā dve patāke tathā eva ca
27. (He attains a lifespan of) a thousand crores of years, and three hundred crores (of years), and eighteen padmas (of years), and similarly, two flags (of time) just so.
अयुतानि च पञ्चाशदृक्षचर्मशतस्य च ।
लोम्नां प्रमाणेन समं ब्रह्मलोके महीयते ॥२८॥
28. ayutāni ca pañcāśadṛkṣacarmaśatasya ca ,
lomnāṁ pramāṇena samaṁ brahmaloke mahīyate.
28. ayutāni ca pañcāśat ṛkṣacarmaśatasya ca
lomnām pramāṇena samam brahmaloke mahīyate
28. ca pañcāśat ayutāni ca ṛkṣacarmaśatasya lomnām
pramāṇena samam (kālam) saḥ brahmaloke mahīyate
28. And for fifty myriad (ayutāni) (years), and for a period equal to the number of hairs on a hundred bear-hides, he is glorified in the world of Brahmā (brahmaloka).
दिवसे सप्तमे यस्तु प्राश्नीयादेकभोजनम् ।
सदा द्वादशमासान्वै जुह्वानो जातवेदसम् ॥२९॥
29. divase saptame yastu prāśnīyādekabhojanam ,
sadā dvādaśamāsānvai juhvāno jātavedasam.
29. divase saptame yaḥ tu prāśnīyāt ekabhojanam
sadā dvādaśamāsān vai juhvānaḥ jātavedasam
29. yaḥ tu sadā dvādaśamāsān divase saptame
ekabhojanam prāśnīyāt jātavedasam juhvānaḥ vai
29. He who, for twelve months, always eats only one meal on the seventh day, while performing a Vedic fire ritual (homa) to Agni (jātavedas).
सरस्वतीं गोपयानो ब्रह्मचर्यं समाचरन् ।
सुमनोवर्णकं चैव मधुमांसं च वर्जयेत् ॥३०॥
30. sarasvatīṁ gopayāno brahmacaryaṁ samācaran ,
sumanovarṇakaṁ caiva madhumāṁsaṁ ca varjayet.
30. sarasvatīm gopayānaḥ brahmacaryam samācaran
sumanovarṇakam ca eva madhumāṃsam ca varjayet
30. (saḥ) sarasvatīm gopayānaḥ brahmacaryam samācaran
ca eva sumanovarṇakam ca madhumāṃsam varjayet
30. While guarding speech (sarasvatī) and observing chastity (brahmacarya), one should also avoid fragrant flowers and cosmetic substances, as well as honey and meat.
पुरुषो मरुतां लोकमिन्द्रलोकं च गच्छति ।
तत्र तत्र च सिद्धार्थो देवकन्याभिरुह्यते ॥३१॥
31. puruṣo marutāṁ lokamindralokaṁ ca gacchati ,
tatra tatra ca siddhārtho devakanyābhiruhyate.
31. puruṣaḥ marutām lokam indralokam ca gacchati
tatra tatra ca siddhārthaḥ devakanyābhiḥ uhyate
31. puruṣaḥ marutām lokam indralokam ca gacchati
tatra tatra ca siddhārthaḥ devakanyābhiḥ uhyate
31. That person (puruṣa) goes to the world of the Maruts and the world of Indra. And in those places, having achieved his purpose, he is served by divine maidens.
फलं बहुसुवर्णस्य यज्ञस्य लभते नरः ।
संख्यामतिगुणां चापि तेषु लोकेषु मोदते ॥३२॥
32. phalaṁ bahusuvarṇasya yajñasya labhate naraḥ ,
saṁkhyāmatiguṇāṁ cāpi teṣu lokeṣu modate.
32. phalam bahusuvarṇasya yajñasya labhate naraḥ
saṃkhyām atiguṇām ca api teṣu lokeṣu modate
32. naraḥ bahusuvarṇasya yajñasya phalam labhate
ca api teṣu lokeṣu atiguṇām saṃkhyām modate
32. That man obtains the fruit of a Vedic ritual (yajña) involving much gold. And in those worlds, he rejoices for an exceedingly long duration.
यस्तु संवत्सरं क्षान्तो भुङ्क्तेऽहन्यष्टमे नरः ।
देवकार्यपरो नित्यं जुह्वानो जातवेदसम् ॥३३॥
33. yastu saṁvatsaraṁ kṣānto bhuṅkte'hanyaṣṭame naraḥ ,
devakāryaparo nityaṁ juhvāno jātavedasam.

33. That person who, for a year, remains forbearing and eats only on the eighth day, constantly dedicated to divine duties and performing Vedic fire rituals (homa) to Agni...
पौण्डरीकस्य यज्ञस्य फलं प्राप्नोत्यनुत्तमम् ।
पद्मवर्णनिभं चैव विमानमधिरोहति ॥३४॥
34. pauṇḍarīkasya yajñasya phalaṁ prāpnotyanuttamam ,
padmavarṇanibhaṁ caiva vimānamadhirohati.

34. He obtains the unsurpassed result of the Pauṇḍarīka Vedic ritual (yajña), and indeed ascends a celestial chariot (vimāna) that has the luster of a lotus.
कृष्णाः कनकगौर्यश्च नार्यः श्यामास्तथापराः ।
वयोरूपविलासिन्यो लभते नात्र संशयः ॥३५॥
35. kṛṣṇāḥ kanakagauryaśca nāryaḥ śyāmāstathāparāḥ ,
vayorūpavilāsinyo labhate nātra saṁśayaḥ.

35. He obtains dark-skinned women, golden-hued women, and other dark-complexioned women, all charming with youth and beauty. There is no doubt about this.

36. And that person who, throughout the year, eats only on every ninth day, constantly for twelve months, performing Vedic fire rituals (homa) to Agni...

37. aśvamedhasya yajñasya phalaṁ prāpnoti mānavaḥ ,

37. A human being obtains the fruit of the aśvamedha (Vedic ritual). Such a person also receives a celestial vehicle (vimāna) as radiant as a white lotus.
दीप्तसूर्याग्नितेजोभिर्दिव्यमालाभिरेव च ।
नीयते रुद्रकन्याभिः सोऽन्तरिक्षं सनातनम् ॥३८॥
38. dīptasūryāgnitejobhirdivyamālābhireva ca ,
nīyate rudrakanyābhiḥ so'ntarikṣaṁ sanātanam.

38. He is led by the daughters of Rudra to the eternal space (antarikṣa), accompanied by the splendors of blazing sun and fire, and adorned with divine garlands.
अष्टादशसहस्राणि वर्षाणां कल्पमेव च ।
कोटीशतसहस्रं च तेषु लोकेषु मोदते ॥३९॥
39. aṣṭādaśasahasrāṇi varṣāṇāṁ kalpameva ca ,
koṭīśatasahasraṁ ca teṣu lokeṣu modate.
39. aṣṭādaśasahasrāṇi varṣāṇām kalpam eva ca
| koṭīśatasahasram ca teṣu lokeṣu modate
39. (saḥ) teṣu lokeṣu aṣṭādaśasahasrāṇi varṣāṇām

39. He delights in those worlds for eighteen thousand years; indeed, for a cosmic age (kalpa), and for a trillion (years).

40. Whoever, indeed, for twelve months, constantly offers oblations (homa) to Agni (jātavedas), that person enjoys the fruit of a full year for every ten-day period that passes.
ब्रह्मकन्यानिवेशे च सर्वभूतमनोहरे ।
अश्वमेधसहस्रस्य फलं प्राप्नोत्यनुत्तमम् ॥४१॥
41. brahmakanyāniveśe ca sarvabhūtamanohare ,
aśvamedhasahasrasya phalaṁ prāpnotyanuttamam.

41. And in a dwelling of celestial maidens, charming to all beings, one obtains the unsurpassed reward of a thousand horse (aśvamedha) Vedic rituals.
रूपवत्यश्च तं कन्या रमयन्ति सदा नरम् ।
नीलोत्पलनिभैर्वर्णै रक्तोत्पलनिभैस्तथा ॥४२॥
42. rūpavatyaśca taṁ kanyā ramayanti sadā naram ,
nīlotpalanibhairvarṇai raktotpalanibhaistathā.

nīlotpalanibhaih varṇaih raktotpalanibhaih tathā

42. And beautiful maidens, whose complexions resemble blue lotuses and similarly red lotuses, always delight that man.
विमानं मण्डलावर्तमावर्तगहनावृतम् ।
सागरोर्मिप्रतीकाशं साधयेद्यानमुत्तमम् ॥४३॥
43. vimānaṁ maṇḍalāvartamāvartagahanāvṛtam ,
sāgarormipratīkāśaṁ sādhayedyānamuttamam.

sāgarormipratīkāśam sādhayet yānam uttamam

43. One should obtain an excellent vehicle – a celestial chariot (vimāna) – which circles in rounds, is enveloped by deep eddies, and resembles ocean waves.
विचित्रमणिमालाभिर्नादितं शङ्खपुष्करैः ।
स्फाटिकैर्वज्रसारैश्च स्तम्भैः सुकृतवेदिकम् ।
आरोहति महद्यानं हंससारसवाहनम् ॥४४॥
44. vicitramaṇimālābhirnāditaṁ śaṅkhapuṣkaraiḥ ,
sphāṭikairvajrasāraiśca stambhaiḥ sukṛtavedikam ,
ārohati mahadyānaṁ haṁsasārasavāhanam.

44. One ascends a great vehicle, adorned with garlands of variegated gems and made resonant by conches and lotus-drums, featuring crystal and diamond-hard pillars, possessing well-made platforms, and borne by swans and cranes.
एकादशे तु दिवसे यः प्राप्ते प्राशते हविः ।
सदा द्वादशमासान्वै जुह्वानो जातवेदसम् ॥४५॥
45. ekādaśe tu divase yaḥ prāpte prāśate haviḥ ,
sadā dvādaśamāsānvai juhvāno jātavedasam.

45. One who, on the eleventh day, partakes of the oblation (havis) after it has been obtained, is indeed continuously making offerings to Agni (jātavedas) for twelve months.
परस्त्रियो नाभिलषेद्वाचाथ मनसापि वा ।
अनृतं च न भाषेत मातापित्रोः कृतेऽपि वा ॥४६॥
46. parastriyo nābhilaṣedvācātha manasāpi vā ,
anṛtaṁ ca na bhāṣeta mātāpitroḥ kṛte'pi vā.
46. parastriyaḥ na abhilaṣet vācā atha manasā api
vā anṛtam ca na bhāṣeta mātāpitroḥ kṛte api vā

46. One should not desire other women, either by word or even by thought. And one should not speak falsehood, not even for the sake of one's parents.
अभिगच्छेन्महादेवं विमानस्थं महाबलम् ।
स्वयंभुवं च पश्येत विमानं समुपस्थितम् ॥४७॥
47. abhigacchenmahādevaṁ vimānasthaṁ mahābalam ,
svayaṁbhuvaṁ ca paśyeta vimānaṁ samupasthitam.

svayaṃbhuvam ca paśyeta vimānam samupasthitam

47. One should approach Mahadeva, the mighty one residing in a celestial chariot (vimana). And one should behold the self-existent (svayaṃbhū) celestial chariot (vimana) that has manifested.
कुमार्यः काञ्चनाभासा रूपवत्यो नयन्ति तम् ।
रुद्राणां तमधीवासं दिवि दिव्यं मनोहरम् ॥४८॥
48. kumāryaḥ kāñcanābhāsā rūpavatyo nayanti tam ,
rudrāṇāṁ tamadhīvāsaṁ divi divyaṁ manoharam.

48. Golden-hued and beautiful maidens lead him to that divine, charming abode of the Rudras in heaven.
वर्षाण्यपरिमेयानि युगान्तमपि चावसेत् ।
कोटीशतसहस्रं च दश कोटिशतानि च ॥४९॥
49. varṣāṇyaparimeyāni yugāntamapi cāvaset ,
koṭīśatasahasraṁ ca daśa koṭiśatāni ca.

koṭīśatasahasram ca daśa koṭiśatāni ca

49. One would reside for immeasurable years, even until the end of an eon (yuga), for a trillion and ten billion years.
रुद्रं नित्यं प्रणमते देवदानवसंमतम् ।
स तस्मै दर्शनं प्राप्तो दिवसे दिवसे भवेत् ॥५०॥
50. rudraṁ nityaṁ praṇamate devadānavasaṁmatam ,
sa tasmai darśanaṁ prāpto divase divase bhavet.

50. One who constantly bows down to Rudra, who is respected by both gods and demons, to that person a vision of him would come about day after day.
दिवसे द्वादशे यस्तु प्राप्ते वै प्राशते हविः ।
सदा द्वादशमासान्वै सर्वमेधफलं लभेत् ॥५१॥
51. divase dvādaśe yastu prāpte vai prāśate haviḥ ,
sadā dvādaśamāsānvai sarvamedhaphalaṁ labhet.

51. Whoever indeed partakes of the oblation on the twelfth day when it arrives, he would always obtain the fruit of the Sarvamedha (Vedic ritual) for twelve months.
आदित्यैर्द्वादशैस्तस्य विमानं संविधीयते ।
मणिमुक्ताप्रवालैश्च महार्हैरुपशोभितम् ॥५२॥
52. ādityairdvādaśaistasya vimānaṁ saṁvidhīyate ,
maṇimuktāpravālaiśca mahārhairupaśobhitam.

maṇimuktāpravālaiḥ ca mahārthaiḥ upaśobhitam

52. For him, a celestial chariot is fashioned by the twelve Adityas, adorned with very precious jewels, pearls, and corals.
हंसमालापरिक्षिप्तं नागवीथीसमाकुलम् ।
मयूरैश्चक्रवाकैश्च कूजद्भिरुपशोभितम् ॥५३॥
53. haṁsamālāparikṣiptaṁ nāgavīthīsamākulam ,
mayūraiścakravākaiśca kūjadbhirupaśobhitam.

mayūraiḥ cakravākaiḥ ca kūjadbhiḥ upaśobhitam
53. Adorned with rows of swans, bustling with elephant herds, and graced by chirping peacocks and cakravāka birds.
अट्टैर्महद्भिः संयुक्तं ब्रह्मलोके प्रतिष्ठितम् ।
नित्यमावसते राजन्नरनारीसमावृतम् ।
ऋषिरेवं महाभागस्त्वङ्गिराः प्राह धर्मवित् ॥५४॥
54. aṭṭairmahadbhiḥ saṁyuktaṁ brahmaloke pratiṣṭhitam ,
nityamāvasate rājannaranārīsamāvṛtam ,
ṛṣirevaṁ mahābhāgastvaṅgirāḥ prāha dharmavit.
54. aṭṭaiḥ mahadbhiḥ saṃyuktam brahmaloke
pratiṣṭhitam nityam āvasate
rājan aranārīsamāvṛtam ṛṣiḥ evam
mahābhāgaḥ tu aṅgirāḥ prāha dharmavit
54. It is endowed with great towers, established in Brahmā's realm (brahman), and constantly resided in, O King, surrounded by men and women. Thus declared the illustrious sage Aṅgirā, the knower of (dharma).
त्रयोदशे तु दिवसे यः प्राप्ते प्राशते हविः ।
सदा द्वादश मासान्वै देवसत्रफलं लभेत् ॥५५॥
55. trayodaśe tu divase yaḥ prāpte prāśate haviḥ ,
sadā dvādaśa māsānvai devasatraphalaṁ labhet.

55. Whoever partakes of the oblation (havi) when the thirteenth day arrives, he would surely obtain the fruit of a divine Vedic ritual (yajña) for twelve months, always.
रक्तपद्मोदयं नाम विमानं साधयेन्नरः ।
जातरूपप्रयुक्तं च रत्नसंचयभूषितम् ॥५६॥
56. raktapadmodayaṁ nāma vimānaṁ sādhayennaraḥ ,
jātarūpaprayuktaṁ ca ratnasaṁcayabhūṣitam.

jātarūpaprayuktam ca ratnasaṃcayabhūṣitam
56. A person should prepare an aerial chariot (vimāna) named 'Red Lotus Dawn', furnished with gold and adorned with a collection of jewels.
देवकन्याभिराकीर्णं दिव्याभरणभूषितम् ।
पुण्यगन्धोदयं दिव्यं वायव्यैरुपशोभितम् ॥५७॥
57. devakanyābhirākīrṇaṁ divyābharaṇabhūṣitam ,
puṇyagandhodayaṁ divyaṁ vāyavyairupaśobhitam.
57. devakanyābhiḥ ākīrṇam divyābharaṇabhūṣitam

57. It is filled with celestial maidens and adorned with divine ornaments. It possesses a divine origin of auspicious fragrances and is graced by aerial beings.
तत्र शङ्कुपताकं च युगान्तं कल्पमेव च ।
अयुतायुतं तथा पद्मं समुद्रं च तथा वसेत् ॥५८॥
58. tatra śaṅkupatākaṁ ca yugāntaṁ kalpameva ca ,
ayutāyutaṁ tathā padmaṁ samudraṁ ca tathā vaset.

ayutāyutam tathā padmam samudram ca tathā vaset

58. There, one can reside for periods as vast as a (śaṅku) and a (patāka), and indeed for a (yugānta) and a (kalpa). Similarly, one may dwell for durations like an (ayutāyuta), a (padma), and a (samudra).
गीतगन्धर्वघोषैश्च भेरीपणवनिस्वनैः ।
सदा प्रमुदितस्ताभिर्देवकन्याभिरीड्यते ॥५९॥
59. gītagandharvaghoṣaiśca bherīpaṇavanisvanaiḥ ,
sadā pramuditastābhirdevakanyābhirīḍyate.

59. Always delighted, he is praised by those celestial maidens, amidst the sounds of songs from celestial musicians (gandharvas) and the reverberations of drums and tabors.
चतुर्दशे तु दिवसे यः पूर्णे प्राशते हविः ।
सदा द्वादश मासान्वै महामेधफलं लभेत् ॥६०॥
60. caturdaśe tu divase yaḥ pūrṇe prāśate haviḥ ,
sadā dvādaśa māsānvai mahāmedhaphalaṁ labhet.

60. Indeed, whoever consumes the ritual offering (havis) on the complete fourteenth day, unfailingly obtains the fruit of a great (Vedic ritual) (mahāmedha) for twelve months.
अनिर्देश्यवयोरूपा देवकन्याः स्वलंकृताः ।
मृष्टतप्ताङ्गदधरा विमानैरनुयान्ति तम् ॥६१॥
61. anirdeśyavayorūpā devakanyāḥ svalaṁkṛtāḥ ,
mṛṣṭataptāṅgadadharā vimānairanuyānti tam.
61. anirdeśyavayorūpāḥ devakanyāḥ svalaṅkṛtāḥ
mṛṣṭataptāṅgadadharāḥ vimānaiḥ anuyānti tam
61. Celestial maidens, whose age and form are indescribable, well-adorned and wearing gleaming, polished armlets, follow him in their celestial chariots.
कलहंसविनिर्घोषैर्नूपुराणां च निस्वनैः ।
काञ्चीनां च समुत्कर्षैस्तत्र तत्र विबोध्यते ॥६२॥
62. kalahaṁsavinirghoṣairnūpurāṇāṁ ca nisvanaiḥ ,
kāñcīnāṁ ca samutkarṣaistatra tatra vibodhyate.
62. kalahaṃsaviniśghoṣaiḥ nūpurāṇām ca nisvanaiḥ
kāñcīnām ca samutkarṣaiḥ tatra tatra vibodhyate
62. He is awakened in various places by the melodious sounds (like those of swans), by the tinkling of anklets, and by the jingling of waist-belts.
देवकन्यानिवासे च तस्मिन्वसति मानवः ।
जाह्नवीवालुकाकीर्णे पूर्णं संवत्सरं नरः ॥६३॥
63. devakanyānivāse ca tasminvasati mānavaḥ ,
jāhnavīvālukākīrṇe pūrṇaṁ saṁvatsaraṁ naraḥ.
63. devakanyānivāse ca tasmin vasati mānavaḥ
jāhnavīvālukākīrṇe pūrṇam saṃvatsaram naraḥ
63. And a man (nara), a human being (mānava), dwells for a full year in that abode of celestial maidens, an abode which is as if covered with the sands of the (Gaṅgā) (Jāhnavī).
यस्तु पक्षे गते भुङ्क्ते एकभक्तं जितेन्द्रियः ।
सदा द्वादश मासांस्तु जुह्वानो जातवेदसम् ।
राजसूयसहस्रस्य फलं प्राप्नोत्यनुत्तमम् ॥६४॥
64. yastu pakṣe gate bhuṅkte ekabhaktaṁ jitendriyaḥ ,
sadā dvādaśa māsāṁstu juhvāno jātavedasam ,
rājasūyasahasrasya phalaṁ prāpnotyanuttamam.
64. yaḥ tu pakṣe gate bhuṅkte ekabhaktam
jitendriyaḥ sadā dvādaśa māsān
tu juhvānaḥ jātavedasam rājasūyasahasrasya
phalam prāpnoti anuttamam
64. But the one who, having controlled his senses, partakes of a single meal after a fortnight has passed, and who always performs a "Vedic fire ritual" (homa) to Agni for twelve months, attains the unsurpassed fruit of a thousand "rājasūya" rituals.
यानमारोहते नित्यं हंसबर्हिणसेवितम् ।
मणिमण्डलकैश्चित्रं जातरूपसमावृतम् ॥६५॥
65. yānamārohate nityaṁ haṁsabarhiṇasevitam ,
maṇimaṇḍalakaiścitraṁ jātarūpasamāvṛtam.

65. He regularly ascends a splendid vehicle, adorned with circles of jewels and covered with gold, which is frequented by swans and peacocks.
दिव्याभरणशोभाभिर्वरस्त्रीभिरलंकृतम् ।
एकस्तम्भं चतुर्द्वारं सप्तभौमं सुमङ्गलम् ।
वैजयन्तीसहस्रैश्च शोभितं गीतनिस्वनैः ॥६६॥
66. divyābharaṇaśobhābhirvarastrībhiralaṁkṛtam ,
ekastambhaṁ caturdvāraṁ saptabhaumaṁ sumaṅgalam ,
vaijayantīsahasraiśca śobhitaṁ gītanisvanaiḥ.

66. It is adorned by beautiful women with the splendor of divine ornaments, has a single pillar, four entrances, and seven stories, making it very auspicious; it is further embellished by thousands of banners and the sounds of singing.
दिव्यं दिव्यगुणोपेतं विमानमधिरोहति ।
मणिमुक्ताप्रवालैश्च भूषितं वैद्युतप्रभम् ।
वसेद्युगसहस्रं च खड्गकुञ्जरवाहनः ॥६७॥
67. divyaṁ divyaguṇopetaṁ vimānamadhirohati ,
maṇimuktāpravālaiśca bhūṣitaṁ vaidyutaprabham ,
vasedyugasahasraṁ ca khaḍgakuñjaravāhanaḥ.

67. He ascends a divine aerial vehicle (vimāna), endowed with divine qualities, adorned with jewels, pearls, and corals, and possessing the radiance of lightning. He dwells there for a thousand ages (yuga), riding a rhinoceros and an elephant as his conveyances.
षोडशे दिवसे यस्तु संप्राप्ते प्राशते हविः ।
सदा द्वादश मासान्वै सोमयज्ञफलं लभेत् ॥६८॥
68. ṣoḍaśe divase yastu saṁprāpte prāśate haviḥ ,
sadā dvādaśa māsānvai somayajñaphalaṁ labhet.

68. Indeed, whoever partakes of the oblation (haviḥ) when the sixteenth day arrives, consistently for twelve months, will obtain the fruit of the Soma (yajña) Vedic ritual.

सौम्यगन्धानुलिप्तश्च कामचारगतिर्भवेत् ॥६९॥
69. somakanyānivāseṣu so'dhyāvasati nityadā ,
saumyagandhānuliptaśca kāmacāragatirbhavet.

69. He always dwells in the abodes of the daughters of Soma (moon), smeared with pleasant fragrances, and moves about at will.
सुदर्शनाभिर्नारीभिर्मधुराभिस्तथैव च ।
अर्च्यते वै विमानस्थः कामभोगैश्च सेव्यते ॥७०॥
70. sudarśanābhirnārībhirmadhurābhistathaiva ca ,
arcyate vai vimānasthaḥ kāmabhogaiśca sevyate.

70. He is worshipped by beautiful women and likewise by sweet-spoken ones. Situated in a celestial chariot, he is served with all desired pleasures.
फलं पद्मशतप्रख्यं महाकल्पं दशाधिकम् ।
आवर्तनानि चत्वारि सागरे यात्यसौ नरः ॥७१॥
71. phalaṁ padmaśataprakhyaṁ mahākalpaṁ daśādhikam ,
āvartanāni catvāri sāgare yātyasau naraḥ.

71. That man attains a reward as glorious as a hundred lotuses, living for eleven great cosmic cycles (mahākalpa), and experiencing four cycles in the ocean of existence (saṃsāra).

सदा द्वादश मासान्वै जुह्वानो जातवेदसम् ॥७२॥

72. Whoever partakes of the oblation (havis) on the seventeenth day, consistently for twelve months, offering it to Jātavedas (Agni).

मारुतौशनसे चैव ब्रह्मलोकं च गच्छति ॥७३॥
73. sthānaṁ vāruṇamaindraṁ ca raudraṁ caivādhigacchati ,
mārutauśanase caiva brahmalokaṁ ca gacchati.

mārutauśanase ca eva brahmalokam ca gacchati
73. saḥ vāruṇam aindram raudram sthānam ca adhigacchati,

73. He attains the realms of Varuṇa, Indra, and Rudra; he also reaches the realms of the Maruts and Uśanas, as well as the world of Brahmā (brahmaloka).
तत्र दैवतकन्याभिरासनेनोपचर्यते ।
भूर्भुवं चापि देवर्षिं विश्वरूपमवेक्षते ॥७४॥
74. tatra daivatakanyābhirāsanenopacaryate ,
bhūrbhuvaṁ cāpi devarṣiṁ viśvarūpamavekṣate.

74. There, he is attended by divine maidens and offered a seat. He also beholds the divine sage (devarṣi) Viśvarūpa, as well as the worlds Bhū and Bhuva.
तत्र देवाधिदेवस्य कुमार्यो रमयन्ति तम् ।
द्वात्रिंशद्रूपधारिण्यो मधुराः समलंकृताः ॥७५॥
75. tatra devādhidevasya kumāryo ramayanti tam ,
dvātriṁśadrūpadhāriṇyo madhurāḥ samalaṁkṛtāḥ.

75. There, the maidens of the God of gods delight him. They appear in thirty-two forms, are charming, and exquisitely adorned.
चन्द्रादित्यावुभौ यावद्गगने चरतः प्रभो ।
तावच्चरत्यसौ वीरः सुधामृतरसाशनः ॥७६॥
76. candrādityāvubhau yāvadgagane carataḥ prabho ,
tāvaccaratyasau vīraḥ sudhāmṛtarasāśanaḥ.
76. candrādityau ubhau yāvat gagane carataḥ prabho
tāvat carati asau vīraḥ sudhāmṛtarasāśanaḥ
76. prabho! yāvat ubhau candrādityau gagane carataḥ,
tāvat asau vīraḥ sudhāmṛtarasāśanaḥ carati.
76. O lord (prabho), as long as both the moon and the sun traverse the sky, for so long does this hero move about, feeding on the essence of immortality (amṛta).
अष्टादशे तु दिवसे प्राश्नीयादेकभोजनम् ।
सदा द्वादश मासान्वै सप्त लोकान्स पश्यति ॥७७॥
77. aṣṭādaśe tu divase prāśnīyādekabhojanam ,
sadā dvādaśa māsānvai sapta lokānsa paśyati.

77. However, on the eighteenth day, one should eat only a single meal. Indeed, by always observing this for twelve months, he sees the seven worlds.
रथैः सनन्दिघोषैश्च पृष्ठतः सोऽनुगम्यते ।
देवकन्याधिरूढैस्तु भ्राजमानैः स्वलंकृतैः ॥७८॥
78. rathaiḥ sanandighoṣaiśca pṛṣṭhataḥ so'nugamyate ,
devakanyādhirūḍhaistu bhrājamānaiḥ svalaṁkṛtaiḥ.

78. He is followed from behind by chariots with joyful sounds, which are mounted by celestial maidens, shining and well-adorned.
व्याघ्रसिंहप्रयुक्तं च मेघस्वननिनादितम् ।
विमानमुत्तमं दिव्यं सुसुखी ह्यधिरोहति ॥७९॥
79. vyāghrasiṁhaprayuktaṁ ca meghasvananināditam ,
vimānamuttamaṁ divyaṁ susukhī hyadhirohati.

79. A very happy person indeed ascends that excellent, divine aerial vehicle (vimāna), which is yoked by tigers and lions and resounds with the roar of clouds.
तत्र कल्पसहस्रं स कान्ताभिः सह मोदते ।
सुधारसं च भुञ्जीत अमृतोपममुत्तमम् ॥८०॥
80. tatra kalpasahasraṁ sa kāntābhiḥ saha modate ,
sudhārasaṁ ca bhuñjīta amṛtopamamuttamam.

80. There, for a thousand cosmic ages (kalpa), he enjoys with beloved women, and he should partake of the excellent, nectar-like divine drink (sudhārasa).

सदा द्वादश मासान्वै सप्त लोकान्स पश्यति ॥८१॥
81. ekonaviṁśe divase yo bhuṅkte ekabhojanam ,

81. Whoever eats only one meal on the nineteenth day, consistently for twelve months, he sees the seven worlds.

गन्धर्वैरुपगीतं च विमानं सूर्यवर्चसम् ॥८२॥
82. uttamaṁ labhate sthānamapsarogaṇasevitam ,
gandharvairupagītaṁ ca vimānaṁ sūryavarcasam.

82. He obtains an excellent realm, attended by throngs of celestial nymphs (apsaras), and a celestial chariot (vimāna) praised by celestial musicians (gandharvas), shining with the splendor of the sun.
तत्रामरवरस्त्रीभिर्मोदते विगतज्वरः ।
दिव्याम्बरधरः श्रीमानयुतानां शतं समाः ॥८३॥
83. tatrāmaravarastrībhirmodate vigatajvaraḥ ,
divyāmbaradharaḥ śrīmānayutānāṁ śataṁ samāḥ.

83. There, free from anxiety, he rejoices with the finest celestial women, adorned in divine garments and glorious, for a hundred times ten thousand years.
पूर्णेऽथ दिवसे विंशे यो भुङ्क्ते ह्येकभोजनम् ।
सदा द्वादश मासांस्तु सत्यवादी धृतव्रतः ॥८४॥
84. pūrṇe'tha divase viṁśe yo bhuṅkte hyekabhojanam ,
sadā dvādaśa māsāṁstu satyavādī dhṛtavrataḥ.

84. Furthermore, when the twentieth day is complete, whoever eats only one meal, consistently for twelve months, being truthful and steadfast in his vow (vrata)...
अमांसाशी ब्रह्मचारी सर्वभूतहिते रतः ।
स लोकान्विपुलान्दिव्यानादित्यानामुपाश्नुते ॥८५॥
85. amāṁsāśī brahmacārī sarvabhūtahite rataḥ ,
sa lokānvipulāndivyānādityānāmupāśnute.

85. One who does not consume meat, practices celibacy (brahmacarya), and is dedicated to the well-being of all creatures, attains the extensive, divine realms of the Adityas.
गन्धर्वैरप्सरोभिश्च दिव्यमाल्यानुलेपनैः ।
विमानैः काञ्चनैर्दिव्यैः पृष्ठतश्चानुगम्यते ॥८६॥
86. gandharvairapsarobhiśca divyamālyānulepanaiḥ ,
vimānaiḥ kāñcanairdivyaiḥ pṛṣṭhataścānugamyate.

86. He is followed by Gandharvas and Apsaras, accompanied by divine garlands and perfumes, and from behind by golden, divine celestial chariots.

लोकमौशनसं दिव्यं शक्रलोकं च गच्छति ।
अश्विनोर्मरुतां चैव सुखेष्वभिरतः सदा ॥८८॥
88. lokamauśanasaṁ divyaṁ śakralokaṁ ca gacchati ,
aśvinormarutāṁ caiva sukheṣvabhirataḥ sadā.

aśvinoḥ marutām ca eva sukheṣu abhirataḥ sadā

88. He attains the divine world of Uśanas (Śukra), and also the realm of Indra. Furthermore, he always delights in the joys associated with the Ashvins and the Maruts.
अनभिज्ञश्च दुःखानां विमानवरमास्थितः ।
सेव्यमानो वरस्त्रीभिः क्रीडत्यमरवत्प्रभुः ॥८९॥
89. anabhijñaśca duḥkhānāṁ vimānavaramāsthitaḥ ,
sevyamāno varastrībhiḥ krīḍatyamaravatprabhuḥ.

89. Unaware of sorrows, seated in an excellent celestial chariot, served by beautiful women, the lord enjoys himself like a deity.

सदा द्वादश मासान्वै जुह्वानो जातवेदसम् ॥९०॥

लोकान्वसूनामाप्नोति दिवाकरसमप्रभः ॥९१॥
91. dhṛtimānahiṁsānirataḥ satyavāganasūyakaḥ ,
lokānvasūnāmāpnoti divākarasamaprabhaḥ.

91. Steadfast, devoted to non-harming (ahiṃsā), truthful in speech, and not envious, he attains the worlds of the Vasus, radiant like the sun.

रमते देवकन्याभिर्दिव्याभरणभूषितः ॥९२॥
92. kāmacārī sudhāhāro vimānavaramāsthitaḥ ,
ramate devakanyābhirdivyābharaṇabhūṣitaḥ.

सदा द्वादश मासांस्तु मिताहारो जितेन्द्रियः ॥९३॥
93. trayoviṁśe tu divase prāśedyastvekabhojanam ,
sadā dvādaśa māsāṁstu mitāhāro jitendriyaḥ.

वायोरुशनसश्चैव रुद्रलोकं च गच्छति ।
कामचारी कामगमः पूज्यमानोऽप्सरोगणैः ॥९४॥
94. vāyoruśanasaścaiva rudralokaṁ ca gacchati ,
kāmacārī kāmagamaḥ pūjyamāno'psarogaṇaiḥ.

94. He attains the realm of Rudra, as well as those of Vayu and Uśanas. He moves and travels wherever he wishes, being honored by throngs of celestial nymphs (apsaras).

100. And he is followed from behind by chariots yoked with lions and tigers, resounding with the roar of clouds, and accompanied by joyful shouts.

विमानमुत्तमं दिव्यमास्थाय सुमनोहरम् ॥१०१॥
101. devakanyāsamārūḍhai rājatairvimalaiḥ śubhaiḥ ,

101. Having ascended a most excellent, divine, and charming aerial chariot, which is brilliant like silver, pure, auspicious, and attended by celestial maidens.

102. tatra kalpasahasraṁ vai vasate strīśatāvṛte ,

102. There, for a thousand cosmic cycles (kalpa), he dwells, surrounded by a hundred women, partaking of the excellent, nectar-like essence of divine drink.

सदा द्वादश मासांस्तु नियतो नियताशनः ॥१०३॥
103. ṣaḍviṁśe divase yastu prāśnīyādekabhojanam ,
sadā dvādaśa māsāṁstu niyato niyatāśanaḥ.

103. Whoever eats only one meal on the twenty-sixth day, consistently for twelve months, being self-controlled and moderate in food intake.

स प्राप्नोति महाभागः पूज्यमानोऽप्सरोगणैः ॥१०४॥
104. jitendriyo vītarāgo juhvāno jātavedasam ,

104. That person, who has conquered his senses, is free from attachment, and is offering oblations to the sacred fire (Jātavedas), that greatly fortunate one attains (the same state), being worshipped by hosts of celestial nymphs (Apsaras).
सप्तानां मरुतां लोकान्वसूनां चापि सोऽश्नुते ।
विमाने स्फाटिके दिव्ये सर्वरत्नैरलंकृते ॥१०५॥
105. saptānāṁ marutāṁ lokānvasūnāṁ cāpi so'śnute ,

द्वे युगानां सहस्रे तु दिव्ये दिव्येन तेजसा ॥१०६॥

अध्यावसति दिव्यात्मा विमानवरमास्थितः ॥१०९॥
109. devarṣicaritaṁ rājanrājarṣibhiradhiṣṭhitam ,

युगकल्पसहस्राणि त्रीण्यावसति वै सुखम् ॥११०॥
110. strībhirmanobhirāmābhī ramamāṇo madotkaṭaḥ ,
yugakalpasahasrāṇi trīṇyāvasati vai sukham.

111. yo'ṣṭāviṁśe tu divase prāśnīyādekabhojanam ,

112. phalaṁ devarṣicaritaṁ vipulaṁ samupāśnute ,
bhogavāṁstejasā bhāti sahasrāṁśurivāmalaḥ.

112. He obtains the vast reward associated with the conduct of divine sages. Endowed with great enjoyment, he shines with splendor, like the spotless sun.

पीनस्तनोरुजघना दिव्याभरणभूषिताः ॥११३॥
113. sukumāryaśca nāryastaṁ ramamāṇāḥ suvarcasaḥ ,
pīnastanorujaghanā divyābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ.

113. And delicate, radiant women, with full breasts, ample thighs, and hips, adorned with divine ornaments, delight in him.

सर्वकामगमे दिव्ये कल्पायुतशतं समाः ॥११४॥
114. ramayanti manaḥ kāntā vimāne sūryasaṁnibhe ,
sarvakāmagame divye kalpāyutaśataṁ samāḥ.

114. These charming women delight his mind in a divine celestial mansion, which resembles the sun and moves wherever desired, for hundreds of thousands of eons.

115. ekonatriṁśe divase yaḥ prāśedekabhojanam ,

विमानं चन्द्रशुभ्राभं दिव्यं समधिगच्छति ॥११६॥
116. tasya lokāḥ śubhā divyā devarājarṣipūjitāḥ ,
vimānaṁ candraśubhrābhaṁ divyaṁ samadhigacchati.

116. Auspicious and divine realms, honored by gods, kings, and sages, become his portion. He attains a divine celestial mansion, brilliant like the moon.

अप्सरोगणसंपूर्णं गन्धर्वैरभिनादितम् ॥११७॥
117. jātarūpamayaṁ yuktaṁ sarvaratnavibhūṣitam ,
apsarogaṇasaṁpūrṇaṁ gandharvairabhināditam.

मनोभिरामा मधुरा रमयन्ति मदोत्कटाः ॥११८॥
118. tatra cainaṁ śubhā nāryo divyābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ ,
manobhirāmā madhurā ramayanti madotkaṭāḥ.

118. And there, beautiful women, adorned with divine ornaments, charming, sweet, and exuberant with joy, delight him.
भोगवांस्तेजसा युक्तो वैश्वानरसमप्रभः ।
दिव्यो दिव्येन वपुषा भ्राजमान इवामरः ॥११९॥
119. bhogavāṁstejasā yukto vaiśvānarasamaprabhaḥ ,
divyo divyena vapuṣā bhrājamāna ivāmaraḥ.

119. He, rich in enjoyments, endowed with radiance, and possessing a brilliance like the universal fire (Vaiśvānara), shines with a divine body as if he were an immortal.
वसूनां मरुतां चैव साध्यानामश्विनोस्तथा ।
रुद्राणां च तथा लोकान्ब्रह्मलोकं च गच्छति ॥१२०॥
120. vasūnāṁ marutāṁ caiva sādhyānāmaśvinostathā ,
rudrāṇāṁ ca tathā lokānbrahmalokaṁ ca gacchati.

120. And he goes to the realms (loka) of the Vasus, the Maruts, the Sadhyas, and the two Ashvins; and similarly, to the realms of the Rudras, and to the realm of Brahmā (brahmaloka).
यस्तु मासे गते भुङ्क्ते एकभक्तं शमात्मकः ।
सदा द्वादश मासान्वै ब्रह्मलोकमवाप्नुयात् ॥१२१॥
121. yastu māse gate bhuṅkte ekabhaktaṁ śamātmakaḥ ,
sadā dvādaśa māsānvai brahmalokamavāpnuyāt.

121. A self-controlled person who eats only one meal once a month, consistently for twelve months, will indeed attain the world of Brahmā.
सुधारसकृताहारः श्रीमान्सर्वमनोहरः ।
तेजसा वपुषा लक्ष्म्या भ्राजते रश्मिवानिव ॥१२२॥
122. sudhārasakṛtāhāraḥ śrīmānsarvamanoharaḥ ,
tejasā vapuṣā lakṣmyā bhrājate raśmivāniva.

122. Such a person, whose sustenance is like the nectar of immortality, becomes glorious and enchanting to all. They shine with splendor, a beautiful form, and auspiciousness, just like the sun.
दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरो दिव्यगन्धानुलेपनः ।
सुखेष्वभिरतो योगी दुःखानामविजानकः ॥१२३॥
123. divyamālyāmbaradharo divyagandhānulepanaḥ ,
sukheṣvabhirato yogī duḥkhānāmavijānakaḥ.

123. This practitioner (yogin) wears divine garlands and garments, is anointed with divine fragrances, delights in all pleasures, and remains unaware of any suffering.
स्वयंप्रभाभिर्नारीभिर्विमानस्थो महीयते ।
रुद्रदेवर्षिकन्याभिः सततं चाभिपूज्यते ॥१२४॥
124. svayaṁprabhābhirnārībhirvimānastho mahīyate ,
rudradevarṣikanyābhiḥ satataṁ cābhipūjyate.

124. Seated in a celestial vehicle, he is honored by radiant women and is constantly worshipped by the daughters of Rudras, Devas, and great sages (ṛṣi).

नानामधुरभाषाभिर्नानारतिभिरेव च ॥१२५॥
125. nānāvidhasurūpābhirnānārāgābhireva ca ,
nānāmadhurabhāṣābhirnānāratibhireva ca.

125. Indeed, by means of various beautiful forms, by diverse emotional attachments (rāga), and by various sweet speeches, and by manifold delights (rati).
विमाने नगराकारे सूर्यवत्सूर्यसंनिभे ।
पृष्ठतः सोमसंकाशे उदक्चैवाभ्रसंनिभे ॥१२६॥
126. vimāne nagarākāre sūryavatsūryasaṁnibhe ,
pṛṣṭhataḥ somasaṁkāśe udakcaivābhrasaṁnibhe.

126. In the celestial palace (vimāna), shaped like a city, like the sun (sūrya) and resembling the sun, at the back it resembles the moon (soma), and to the north it resembles a cloud.
दक्षिणायां तु रक्ताभे अधस्तान्नीलमण्डले ।
ऊर्ध्वं चित्राभिसंकाशे नैको वसति पूजितः ॥१२७॥
127. dakṣiṇāyāṁ tu raktābhe adhastānnīlamaṇḍale ,
ūrdhvaṁ citrābhisaṁkāśe naiko vasati pūjitaḥ.

ūrdhvam citrābhisaṃkāśe na ekaḥ vasati pūjitaḥ
127. tu dakṣiṇāyām raktābhe adhastāt nīlamaṇḍale

127. However, in the south it is reddish-lustered, below it is blue-circled, and above it resembles a variegated image. Not a single worshipped one dwells there.
यावद्वर्षसहस्रं तु जम्बूद्वीपे प्रवर्षति ।
तावत्संवत्सराः प्रोक्ता ब्रह्मलोकस्य धीमतः ॥१२८॥
128. yāvadvarṣasahasraṁ tu jambūdvīpe pravarṣati ,
tāvatsaṁvatsarāḥ proktā brahmalokasya dhīmataḥ.
128. yāvat varṣasahastram tu jambūdvīpe pravarṣati
tāvat saṃvatsarāḥ proktāḥ brahmalokasya dhīmataḥ
128. yāvat jambūdvīpe varṣasahastram tu pravarṣati
tāvat brahmalokasya dhīmataḥ saṃvatsarāḥ proktāḥ
128. Indeed, for as long as a thousand years (varṣa) pass on Jambudvīpa, that many years are declared for the wise (dhīmat) one of Brahmā's world (brahmaloka).
विप्रुषश्चैव यावन्त्यो निपतन्ति नभस्तलात् ।
वर्षासु वर्षतस्तावन्निवसत्यमरप्रभः ॥१२९॥
129. vipruṣaścaiva yāvantyo nipatanti nabhastalāt ,
varṣāsu varṣatastāvannivasatyamaraprabhaḥ.
129. vipruṣaḥ ca eva yāvantyaḥ nipatanti nabhastalāt
varṣāsu varṣataḥ tāvat nivasati amaraprabhaḥ
129. amaraprabhaḥ tāvat nivasati yāvantyaḥ vipruṣaḥ
ca eva nabhastalāt varṣāsu varṣataḥ nipatanti
129. The person whose radiance is like that of the gods resides for as many years as there are drops of rain that fall from the sky during the rainy season.
मासोपवासी वर्षैस्तु दशभिः स्वर्गमुत्तमम् ।
महर्षित्वमथासाद्य सशरीरगतिर्भवेत् ॥१३०॥
130. māsopavāsī varṣaistu daśabhiḥ svargamuttamam ,
maharṣitvamathāsādya saśarīragatirbhavet.
130. māsopavāsī varṣaiḥ tu daśabhiḥ svargam uttamam
maharṣitvam atha āsādya saśarīragatiḥ bhavet
130. daśabhiḥ varṣaiḥ tu māsopavāsī uttamam svargam
atha maharṣitvam āsādya saśarīragatiḥ bhavet
130. One who observes a monthly fast for ten years attains the highest heaven. Furthermore, having achieved the status of a great sage (maharṣi), he would experience passage (gati) with his physical body.
मुनिर्दान्तो जितक्रोधो जितशिश्नोदरः सदा ।
जुह्वन्नग्नींश्च नियतः संध्योपासनसेविता ॥१३१॥
131. munirdānto jitakrodho jitaśiśnodaraḥ sadā ,
juhvannagnīṁśca niyataḥ saṁdhyopāsanasevitā.
131. muniḥ dāntaḥ jitakrodhaḥ jitaśiśnodaraḥ sadā
juhvan agnīn ca niyataḥ sandhyopāsanasevitā
131. muniḥ dāntaḥ jitakrodhaḥ jitaśiśnodaraḥ sadā
agnīn ca juhvan niyataḥ sandhyopāsanasevitā
131. A sage (muni) who is self-controlled (dānta), who has conquered anger, and who has always mastered the desires of the genitals and stomach, while being disciplined in performing Vedic fire rituals (homa) into the fires, is devoted to the twilight worship (sandhyopāsanā).
बहुभिर्नियमैरेवं मासानश्नाति यो नरः ।
अभ्रावकाशशीलश्च तस्य वासो निरुच्यते ॥१३२॥
132. bahubhirniyamairevaṁ māsānaśnāti yo naraḥ ,
abhrāvakāśaśīlaśca tasya vāso nirucyate.
132. bahubhiḥ niyamaiḥ evam māsān aśnāti yaḥ naraḥ
abhrāvakāśaśīlaḥ ca tasya vāsaḥ nirucyate
132. yaḥ naraḥ evam bahubhiḥ niyamaiḥ māsān aśnāti
ca abhrāvakāśaśīlaḥ tasya vāsaḥ nirucyate
132. The person who thus observes many regulations (niyama) regarding eating for months, and whose nature (śīla) is to reside in the open (abhrāvakāśa), his dwelling (vāsa) is declared.
दिवं गत्वा शरीरेण स्वेन राजन्यथामरः ।
स्वर्गं पुण्यं यथाकाममुपभुङ्क्ते यथाविधि ॥१३३॥
133. divaṁ gatvā śarīreṇa svena rājanyathāmaraḥ ,
svargaṁ puṇyaṁ yathākāmamupabhuṅkte yathāvidhi.
133. divam gatvā śarīreṇa svena rājan yathā amaraḥ
svargam puṇyam yathākāmam upabhuṅkte yathāvidhi
133. rājan svena śarīreṇa divam gatvā yathā amaraḥ
puṇyam svargam yathākāmam yathāvidhi upabhuṅkte
133. O King, just as an immortal, having ascended to heaven with their own physical body, enjoys the meritorious celestial realm according to their desire and prescribed rituals.
एष ते भरतश्रेष्ठ यज्ञानां विधिरुत्तमः ।
व्याख्यातो ह्यानुपूर्व्येण उपवासफलात्मकः ॥१३४॥
134. eṣa te bharataśreṣṭha yajñānāṁ vidhiruttamaḥ ,
vyākhyāto hyānupūrvyeṇa upavāsaphalātmakaḥ.
134. eṣa te bharataśreṣṭha yajñānām vidhiḥ uttamaḥ
vyākhyātaḥ hi ānupūrvyāṇa upavāsaphalātmakaḥ
134. bharataśreṣṭha te eṣa yajñānām uttamaḥ vidhiḥ
hi ānupūrvyāṇa upavāsaphalātmakaḥ vyākhyātaḥ
134. O best among Bharatas, this excellent procedure for (yajñas) has indeed been explained to you in due order, yielding the fruits of fasting.
दरिद्रैर्मनुजैः पार्थ प्राप्यं यज्ञफलं यथा ।
उपवासमिमं कृत्वा गच्छेच्च परमां गतिम् ।
देवद्विजातिपूजायां रतो भरतसत्तम ॥१३५॥
135. daridrairmanujaiḥ pārtha prāpyaṁ yajñaphalaṁ yathā ,
upavāsamimaṁ kṛtvā gacchecca paramāṁ gatim ,
devadvijātipūjāyāṁ rato bharatasattama.
135. daridraiḥ manujaiḥ pārtha prāpyam
yajñaphalam yathā upavāsam imam
kṛtvā gacchet ca paramām gatim
devadvijātipūjāyām rataḥ bharatasattama
135. pārtha bharatasattama yathā daridraiḥ
manujaiḥ yajñaphalam prāpyam
imam upavāsam kṛtvā devadvijātipūjāyām
rataḥ ca paramām gatim gacchet
135. O Pārtha, O best among Bharatas, just as the fruit of a (yajña) is attainable even by poor people, so too, by observing this fast and being devoted to the worship of gods and the twice-born (dvija), one can attain the supreme goal.
उपवासविधिस्त्वेष विस्तरेण प्रकीर्तितः ।
नियतेष्वप्रमत्तेषु शौचवत्सु महात्मसु ॥१३६॥
136. upavāsavidhistveṣa vistareṇa prakīrtitaḥ ,
niyateṣvapramatteṣu śaucavatsu mahātmasu.
136. upavāsavidhiḥ tu eṣa vistareṇa prakīrtitaḥ
niyateṣu apramatteṣu śaucavatsu mahātmasu
136. tu eṣa upavāsavidhiḥ vistareṇa niyateṣu
apramatteṣu śaucavatsu mahātmasu prakīrtitaḥ
136. This method of fasting, moreover, has been elaborately described among those who are disciplined, vigilant, pure, and great-souled.
दम्भद्रोहनिवृत्तेषु कृतबुद्धिषु भारत ।
अचलेष्वप्रकम्पेषु मा ते भूदत्र संशयः ॥१३७॥
137. dambhadrohanivṛtteṣu kṛtabuddhiṣu bhārata ,
acaleṣvaprakampeṣu mā te bhūdatra saṁśayaḥ.
137. dambhadrohanivṛtteṣu kṛtabuddhiṣu bhārata
acaleṣu aprakampeṣu mā te bhūt atra saṃśayaḥ
137. bhārata te dambhadrohanivṛtteṣu kṛtabuddhiṣu
acaleṣu aprakampeṣu atra saṃśayaḥ mā bhūt
137. O Bhārata, have no doubt regarding those who have abstained from hypocrisy and malice, whose minds are resolved, and who are unwavering and unshakable.
