वैशंपायन उवाच ।
धृतराष्ट्रस्तु पुत्रस्य श्रुत्वा वचनमीदृशम् ।
मुहूर्तमिव संचिन्त्य दुर्योधनमथाब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
dhṛtarāṣṭrastu putrasya śrutvā vacanamīdṛśam ,
muhūrtamiva saṁcintya duryodhanamathābravīt.
1. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ tu putrasya śrutvā vacanam
īdṛśam muhūrtam iva saṃcintya duryodhanam atha abravīt
1. Vaiśampāyana said: But Dhṛtarāṣṭra, having heard such words from his son, deliberated for a moment and then spoke to Duryodhana.
धर्मनित्यः सदा पाण्डुर्ममासीत्प्रियकृद्धितः ।
सर्वेषु ज्ञातिषु तथा मयि त्वासीद्विशेषतः ॥२॥
2. dharmanityaḥ sadā pāṇḍurmamāsītpriyakṛddhitaḥ ,
sarveṣu jñātiṣu tathā mayi tvāsīdviśeṣataḥ.
2. dharmanityaḥ sadā pāṇḍuḥ mama āsīt priyakṛt hitaḥ
sarveṣu jñātiṣu tathā mayi tu āsīt viśeṣataḥ
2. Pāṇḍu was always dedicated to righteousness (dharma), consistently performing dear and beneficial acts for me. He was like that among all my relatives, but especially so towards me.
नास्य किंचिन्न जानामि भोजनादि चिकीर्षितम् ।
निवेदयति नित्यं हि मम राज्यं धृतव्रतः ॥३॥
3. nāsya kiṁcinna jānāmi bhojanādi cikīrṣitam ,
nivedayati nityaṁ hi mama rājyaṁ dhṛtavrataḥ.
3. na asya kiṃcit na jānāmi bhojana ādi cikīrṣitam
nivedayati nityam hi mama rājyam dhṛtavrataḥ
3. I knew everything about him, even his desired activities like eating and so forth. Indeed, being firm in his vows (dhṛtavrata), he always informed me about my kingdom.
तस्य पुत्रो यथा पाण्डुस्तथा धर्मपरायणः ।
गुणवाँल्लोकविख्यातः पौराणां च सुसंमतः ॥४॥
4. tasya putro yathā pāṇḍustathā dharmaparāyaṇaḥ ,
guṇavāँllokavikhyātaḥ paurāṇāṁ ca susaṁmataḥ.
4. tasya putraḥ yathā pāṇḍuḥ tathā dharmaparāyaṇaḥ
guṇavān lokavikhyātaḥ paurāṇām ca susaṃmataḥ
4. Just as Pāṇḍu was, so too is his son (Yudhiṣṭhira) supremely dedicated to righteousness (dharma). He is virtuous, renowned among the people, and highly esteemed by the citizens.
स कथं शक्यमस्माभिरपक्रष्टुं बलादितः ।
पितृपैतामहाद्राज्यात्ससहायो विशेषतः ॥५॥
5. sa kathaṁ śakyamasmābhirapakraṣṭuṁ balāditaḥ ,
pitṛpaitāmahādrājyātsasahāyo viśeṣataḥ.
5. saḥ katham śakyam asmābhiḥ apakraṣṭum balāt
itaḥ pitṛpaitāmahāt rājyāt sasahāyaḥ viśeṣataḥ
5. How can we forcibly remove him from this ancestral kingdom, especially when he has allies?
भृता हि पाण्डुनामात्या बलं च सततं भृतम् ।
भृताः पुत्राश्च पौत्राश्च तेषामपि विशेषतः ॥६॥
6. bhṛtā hi pāṇḍunāmātyā balaṁ ca satataṁ bhṛtam ,
bhṛtāḥ putrāśca pautrāśca teṣāmapi viśeṣataḥ.
6. bhṛtāḥ hi pāṇḍunāmātyāḥ balam ca satatam bhṛtam
bhṛtāḥ putrāḥ ca pautrāḥ ca teṣām api viśeṣataḥ
6. Indeed, Pandu's ministers were supported, and the army was constantly maintained. Furthermore, their sons and grandsons were also especially cared for.
ते पुरा सत्कृतास्तात पाण्डुना पौरवा जनाः ।
कथं युधिष्ठिरस्यार्थे न नो हन्युः सबान्धवान् ॥७॥
7. te purā satkṛtāstāta pāṇḍunā pauravā janāḥ ,
kathaṁ yudhiṣṭhirasyārthe na no hanyuḥ sabāndhavān.
7. te purā satkṛtāḥ tāta pāṇḍunā pauravāḥ janāḥ katham
yudhiṣṭhirasya arthe na naḥ hanyūḥ sabāndhavān
7. O father, how will those Paurava people, who were formerly greatly honored by Pandu, not kill us and our relatives for Yudhishthira's sake?
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
एवमेतन्मया तात भावितं दोषमात्मनि ।
दृष्ट्वा प्रकृतयः सर्वा अर्थमानेन योजिताः ॥८॥
8. duryodhana uvāca ,
evametanmayā tāta bhāvitaṁ doṣamātmani ,
dṛṣṭvā prakṛtayaḥ sarvā arthamānena yojitāḥ.
8. duryodhanaḥ uvāca evam etat mayā tāta bhāvitam doṣam
ātmani dṛṣṭvā prakṛtayaḥ sarvāḥ arthamānena yojitāḥ
8. Duryodhana said: "O father, I have indeed considered this defect in myself, having observed that all the subjects are motivated by wealth and honor."
ध्रुवमस्मत्सहायास्ते भविष्यन्ति प्रधानतः ।
अर्थवर्गः सहामात्यो मत्संस्थोऽद्य महीपते ॥९॥
9. dhruvamasmatsahāyāste bhaviṣyanti pradhānataḥ ,
arthavargaḥ sahāmātyo matsaṁstho'dya mahīpate.
9. dhruvam asmatsahāyāḥ te bhaviṣyanti pradhānataḥ
arthavargaḥ sa-amātyaḥ matsaṃsthaḥ adya mahīpate
9. O king, they will certainly become our primary allies. Today, the entire body of resources, along with the ministers, is established in me.
स भवान्पाण्डवानाशु विवासयितुमर्हति ।
मृदुनैवाभ्युपायेन नगरं वारणावतम् ॥१०॥
10. sa bhavānpāṇḍavānāśu vivāsayitumarhati ,
mṛdunaivābhyupāyena nagaraṁ vāraṇāvatam.
10. saḥ bhavān pāṇḍavān āśu vivāsayitum arhati
mṛdunā eva abhyupāyena nagaram vāraṇāvatam
10. Your Majesty should promptly cause the Pāṇḍavas to depart to the city of Vāraṇāvata, using only gentle means.
यदा प्रतिष्ठितं राज्यं मयि राजन्भविष्यति ।
तदा कुन्ती सहापत्या पुनरेष्यति भारत ॥११॥
11. yadā pratiṣṭhitaṁ rājyaṁ mayi rājanbhaviṣyati ,
tadā kuntī sahāpatyā punareṣyati bhārata.
11. yadā pratiṣṭhitam rājyam mayi rājan bhaviṣyati
tadā kuntī saha apatyā punaḥ eṣyati bhārata
11. O King, when the kingdom is established for me, then Kuntī, along with her sons, will return again, O Bhārata.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
दुर्योधन ममाप्येतद्धृदि संपरिवर्तते ।
अभिप्रायस्य पापत्वान्नैतत्तु विवृणोम्यहम् ॥१२॥
12. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
duryodhana mamāpyetaddhṛdi saṁparivartate ,
abhiprāyasya pāpatvānnaitattu vivṛṇomyaham.
12. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca duryodhana mama api etat hṛdi
saṃparivartate abhiprāyasya pāpatvāt na etat tu vivṛṇomi aham
12. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "O Duryodhana, this very thought also revolves in my heart. But because of the evil nature of this intention, I do not disclose it."
न च भीष्मो न च द्रोणो न क्षत्ता न च गौतमः ।
विवास्यमानान्कौन्तेयाननुमंस्यन्ति कर्हिचित् ॥१३॥
13. na ca bhīṣmo na ca droṇo na kṣattā na ca gautamaḥ ,
vivāsyamānānkaunteyānanumaṁsyanti karhicit.
13. na ca bhīṣmaḥ na ca droṇaḥ na kṣattā na ca gautamaḥ
vivāsyāmānān kaunteyān anumansyanti karhicit
13. Neither Bhīṣma, nor Droṇa, nor Vidura, nor Kṛpa (Gautama) will ever approve of the Kaunteyas being exiled.
समा हि कौरवेयाणां वयमेते च पुत्रक ।
नैते विषममिच्छेयुर्धर्मयुक्ता मनस्विनः ॥१४॥
14. samā hi kauraveyāṇāṁ vayamete ca putraka ,
naite viṣamamiccheyurdharmayuktā manasvinaḥ.
14. samāḥ hi kauraveyāṇām vayam ete ca putraka na
ete viṣamam iccheyuḥ dharmayuktāḥ manasvinaḥ
14. O son, we (our family) and these (Pāṇḍavas) are indeed equal as members of the Kuru lineage. These high-minded individuals, devoted to righteousness (dharma), would not desire anything unfair.
ते वयं कौरवेयाणामेतेषां च महात्मनाम् ।
कथं न वध्यतां तात गच्छेम जगतस्तथा ॥१५॥
15. te vayaṁ kauraveyāṇāmeteṣāṁ ca mahātmanām ,
kathaṁ na vadhyatāṁ tāta gacchema jagatastathā.
15. te vayam kauraveyāṇām eteṣām ca mahātmanām |
katham na vadhyatām tāta gacchema jagataḥ tathā
15. Dear one, how can we avoid slaying these Kauravas and these great souls (ātman), and indeed, the people of the world?
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
मध्यस्थः सततं भीष्मो द्रोणपुत्रो मयि स्थितः ।
यतः पुत्रस्ततो द्रोणो भविता नात्र सांशयः ॥१६॥
16. duryodhana uvāca ,
madhyasthaḥ satataṁ bhīṣmo droṇaputro mayi sthitaḥ ,
yataḥ putrastato droṇo bhavitā nātra sāṁśayaḥ.
16. duryodhanaḥ uvāca | madhyasthaḥ
satatam bhīṣmaḥ droṇaputraḥ mayi
sthitaḥ | yataḥ putraḥ tataḥ
droṇaḥ bhavitā na atra sāṁśayaḥ
16. Duryodhana said: "Bhishma always remains neutral. Drona's son (Aśvatthāmā) is devoted to me. Wherever the son is, Drona will surely be there; there is no doubt about this."
कृपः शारद्वतश्चैव यत एते त्रयस्ततः ।
द्रोणं च भागिनेयं च न स त्यक्ष्यति कर्हिचित् ॥१७॥
17. kṛpaḥ śāradvataścaiva yata ete trayastataḥ ,
droṇaṁ ca bhāgineyaṁ ca na sa tyakṣyati karhicit.
17. kṛpaḥ śāradvataḥ ca eva yataḥ ete trayaḥ tataḥ |
droṇam ca bhāgineyam ca na sa tyakṣyati karhicit
17. And Kṛpa, the son of Śaradvat, will never abandon Drona and his (Kṛpa's) nephew (Aśvatthāmā), because these three (Kṛpa, Drona, and Aśvatthāmā) are united.
क्षत्तार्थबद्धस्त्वस्माकं प्रच्छन्नं तु यतः परे ।
न चैकः स समर्थोऽस्मान्पाण्डवार्थे प्रबाधितुम् ॥१८॥
18. kṣattārthabaddhastvasmākaṁ pracchannaṁ tu yataḥ pare ,
na caikaḥ sa samartho'smānpāṇḍavārthe prabādhitum.
18. kṣattā arthabaddhaḥ tu asmākam pracchannam tu yataḥ pare
| na ca ekaḥ sa samarthaḥ asmān pāṇḍavārthe prabādhitum
18. The Kṣattṛ (Vidura) is indeed bound to our cause, but since he secretly favors the others (the Pāṇḍavas), he alone is not capable of thwarting us for the sake of the Pāṇḍavas.
स विश्रब्धः पाण्डुपुत्रान्सह मात्रा विवासय ।
वारणावतमद्यैव नात्र दोषो भविष्यति ॥१९॥
19. sa viśrabdhaḥ pāṇḍuputrānsaha mātrā vivāsaya ,
vāraṇāvatamadyaiva nātra doṣo bhaviṣyati.
19. sa viśrabdhaḥ pāṇḍuputrān saha mātrā vivāsaya
| vāraṇāvatam adya eva na atra doṣaḥ bhaviṣyati
19. You, (acting) with confidence, banish the sons of Pāṇḍu along with their mother to Vāraṇāvata today itself. There will be no fault in this.
विनिद्रकरणं घोरं हृदि शल्यमिवार्पितम् ।
शोकपावकमुद्भूतं कर्मणैतेन नाशय ॥२०॥
20. vinidrakaraṇaṁ ghoraṁ hṛdi śalyamivārpitam ,
śokapāvakamudbhūtaṁ karmaṇaitena nāśaya.
20. vinidrakaraṇam ghoram hṛdi śalyam iva arpitam
śokapāvakam udbhūtam karmaṇā etena nāśaya
20. Destroy with this action (karma) the dreadful, sleep-depriving agony, which is like an arrow (śalya) lodged in the heart, and the sorrow-fire that has flared up.
