Janamejaya said: 'O revered one (Bhagavan), I wish to hear in detail this narrative of Partha (Arjuna), whose actions are untiring, specifically how he acquired the divine weapons.'

And what did he accomplish while residing there, O best among the knowers of Brahman (brahman)? And how were the venerable Lord Sthāṇu (Śiva) and the king of the gods (Indra) pleased?

I wish to hear this from your grace, O best among the twice-born (dvija). For you are indeed omniscient, and you truly know both divine and human matters.

O greatly wise one, it is indeed exceedingly wonderful and hair-raising that Arjuna (arjuna) fought an unparalleled battle (saṃgrāma) with Bhava (Śiva). Formerly, he was the foremost among fighters, undefeated in battles (saṃgrāma).

Having heard that (story), the hearts of even the brave Pārthas (pārtha)—those lion-like men—trembled from a mixture of despondency, elation, and extreme astonishment.

Whatever else Pārtha (Arjuna) did, tell me all of it. Indeed, I do not perceive even the slightest blameworthy act by this Jīṣṇu (Arjuna). Therefore, recount all the exploits of that hero to me.

The best among men (puruṣa), the mighty-armed and greatly powerful Arjuna, indeed took up that divine bow and sword for the accomplishment of his task. He proceeded towards the northern direction, towards the peak of the Himalayas.

O King, the son of Indra, Arjuna, resolute and a great charioteer (mahāratha) in all worlds, endowed with supreme speed, and with a firm resolve for asceticism (tapas), indeed entered that dreadful, thorny forest all alone.

Thereupon, after the son of Kunti (Arjuna) had departed for the humanless forest, a sound of conch-shells and drums arose in the sky.

21.
Then, having put on a garment of Darbha grass and adorned with a staff and deerskin, he subsisted on fruits for one month, doing so after every three nights. He passed the second month with a fasting period of twice that duration.

Even for the third month, he would consume food only once every fortnight. He sustained himself by consuming withered leaves that had fallen to the ground.

23.
When the fourth full month had thus passed, the mighty-armed (mahābāhu) son of Pāṇḍu (Pāṇḍunandana) became one who subsisted on air. He stood with arms raised, without support, perched on the very tips of his big toes.

And due to his constant ablutions, the matted locks (jaṭāḥ) of that great-souled one (mahātman) became immensely brilliant, resembling lightning and lotuses.

25.
Then all the great sages (maharṣi) went to the god Pinākin (Shiva), the blue-necked (Śitikaṇṭha), the highly fortunate one. Bowing down and propitiating him, they all reported that action (karma) of Phālguna (Arjuna).
