वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः सूर्यान्निश्चरितां कर्णः शुश्राव भारतीम् ।
दुरत्ययां प्रणयिनीं पितृवद्भास्करेरिताम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ sūryānniścaritāṁ karṇaḥ śuśrāva bhāratīm ,
duratyayāṁ praṇayinīṁ pitṛvadbhāskareritām.

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Then Karna heard the speech (bhāratī) emanating from the Sun, a loving message, difficult to overcome, spoken by the Sun (bhāskara) like a father.
सत्यमाह पृथा वाक्यं कर्ण मातृवचः कुरु ।
श्रेयस्ते स्यान्नरव्याघ्र सर्वमाचरतस्तथा ॥२॥
2. satyamāha pṛthā vākyaṁ karṇa mātṛvacaḥ kuru ,
śreyaste syānnaravyāghra sarvamācaratastathā.
2. satyam āha pṛthā vākyam karṇa mātṛvacaḥ kuru
śreyaḥ te syāt naravyāghra sarvam ācarataḥ tathā
2. karṇa,
pṛthā satyam vākyam āha mātṛvacaḥ kuru naravyāghra,
tathā sarvam ācarataḥ te śreyaḥ syāt
2. Pṛthā speaks the truth, Karna. Heed your mother's words. Your welfare will be ensured, O tiger among men, if you act completely in that manner.
एवमुक्तस्य मात्रा च स्वयं पित्रा च भानुना ।
चचाल नैव कर्णस्य मतिः सत्यधृतेस्तदा ॥३॥
3. evamuktasya mātrā ca svayaṁ pitrā ca bhānunā ,
cacāla naiva karṇasya matiḥ satyadhṛtestadā.

cacāla na eva karṇasya matiḥ satyadhṛteḥ tadā
3. tadā evam mātrā ca svayam pitrā ca bhānunā

3. Even when spoken to thus by his mother and by his own father Bhānu, Karṇa, who was steadfast in truth, did not waver in his resolve then.
कर्ण उवाच ।
न ते न श्रद्दधे वाक्यं क्षत्रिये भाषितं त्वया ।
धर्मद्वारं ममैतत्स्यान्नियोगकरणं तव ॥४॥
4. karṇa uvāca ,
na te na śraddadhe vākyaṁ kṣatriye bhāṣitaṁ tvayā ,
dharmadvāraṁ mamaitatsyānniyogakaraṇaṁ tava.

tvayā dharmadvāram mama etat syāt niyogakaraṇam tava

4. Karṇa said: "O Kṣatriya woman, I do not have faith in these words spoken by you. Although, for me, carrying out your command would be a gateway to natural law (dharma)."
अकरोन्मयि यत्पापं भवती सुमहात्ययम् ।
अवकीर्णोऽस्मि ते तेन तद्यशःकीर्तिनाशनम् ॥५॥
5. akaronmayi yatpāpaṁ bhavatī sumahātyayam ,
avakīrṇo'smi te tena tadyaśaḥkīrtināśanam.
5. akarot mayi yat pāpam bhavatī sumahātyayam
avakīrṇaḥ asmi te tena tat yaśaḥkīrtināśanam
5. bhavatī mayi yat sumahātyayam pāpam akarot
tena te avakīrṇaḥ asmi tat yaśaḥkīrtināśanam
5. The very great transgression, the sin (pāpa) which you committed against me - by that act I have been abandoned by you, and that (act was) destructive of my fame and glory.
अहं च क्षत्रियो जातो न प्राप्तः क्षत्रसत्क्रियाम् ।
त्वत्कृते किं नु पापीयः शत्रुः कुर्यान्ममाहितम् ॥६॥
6. ahaṁ ca kṣatriyo jāto na prāptaḥ kṣatrasatkriyām ,
tvatkṛte kiṁ nu pāpīyaḥ śatruḥ kuryānmamāhitam.
6. aham ca kṣatriyaḥ jātaḥ na prāptaḥ kṣatrasatkriyām
tvatkṛte kim nu pāpīyaḥ śatruḥ kuryāt mama ahitam
6. aham ca kṣatriyaḥ jātaḥ tvatkṛte kṣatrasatkriyām na
prāptaḥ kim nu pāpīyaḥ śatruḥ mama ahitam kuryāt
6. And I, though born a Kṣatriya, did not receive the honors and proper rites befitting a warrior (kṣatra) due to you. What worse misfortune could an enemy inflict upon me?
क्रियाकाले त्वनुक्रोशमकृत्वा त्वमिमं मम ।
हीनसंस्कारसमयमद्य मां समचूचुदः ॥७॥
7. kriyākāle tvanukrośamakṛtvā tvamimaṁ mama ,
hīnasaṁskārasamayamadya māṁ samacūcudaḥ.
7. kriyākāle tu anukrośam akṛtvā tvam imam mama
hīnasaṃskārasamayam adya mām samacūcudaḥ
7. tvam adya kriyākāle mama imam hīnasaṃskārasamayam
akṛtvā mām anukrośam samacūcudaḥ
7. At the moment of action, without having shown compassion (anukrośa) for me in this state of deficient sacred rites (saṃskāra), you have now spurred me on.
न वै मम हितं पूर्वं मातृवच्चेष्टितं त्वया ।
सा मां संबोधयस्यद्य केवलात्महितैषिणी ॥८॥
8. na vai mama hitaṁ pūrvaṁ mātṛvacceṣṭitaṁ tvayā ,
sā māṁ saṁbodhayasyadya kevalātmahitaiṣiṇī.
8. na vai mama hitam pūrvam mātṛvat ceṣṭitam tvayā
sā mām saṃbodhayasi adya kevala ātmahitaiṣiṇī
8. tvayā pūrvam mama hitam mātṛvat na vai ceṣṭitam
sā adya kevala ātmahitaiṣiṇī mām saṃbodhayasi
8. Certainly, you did not previously act for my welfare (hita) as a mother would. But now, solely desiring your own benefit, you advise me.
कृष्णेन सहितात्को वै न व्यथेत धनंजयात् ।
कोऽद्य भीतं न मां विद्यात्पार्थानां समितिं गतम् ॥९॥
9. kṛṣṇena sahitātko vai na vyatheta dhanaṁjayāt ,
ko'dya bhītaṁ na māṁ vidyātpārthānāṁ samitiṁ gatam.
9. kṛṣṇena sahitāt kaḥ vai na vyatheta dhanañjayāt kaḥ
adya bhītam na mām vidyāt pārthānām samitim gatam
9. kaḥ vai kṛṣṇena sahitāt dhanañjayāt na vyatheta kaḥ
adya pārthānām samitim gatam bhītam mām na vidyāt
9. Who, indeed, would not be afraid of Dhananjaya (Arjuna) when he is accompanied by Krishna? And who today would not perceive me as fearful, now that I have come to the assembly of the Pārthas?
अभ्राता विदितः पूर्वं युद्धकाले प्रकाशितः ।
पाण्डवान्यदि गच्छामि किं मां क्षत्रं वदिष्यति ॥१०॥
10. abhrātā viditaḥ pūrvaṁ yuddhakāle prakāśitaḥ ,
pāṇḍavānyadi gacchāmi kiṁ māṁ kṣatraṁ vadiṣyati.
10. abhrātā viditaḥ pūrvam yuddhakāle prakāśitaḥ
pāṇḍavān yadi gacchāmi kim mām kṣatram vadiṣyati
10. pūrvam abhrātā viditaḥ yuddhakāle prakāśitaḥ
yadi pāṇḍavān gacchāmi kṣatram mām kim vadiṣyati
10. Previously, I was known as one without brothers, and this was revealed during the time of war. If I go to the Pāṇḍavas, what will the warrior class (kṣatra) say about me?
सर्वकामैः संविभक्तः पूजितश्च सदा भृशम् ।
अहं वै धार्तराष्ट्राणां कुर्यां तदफलं कथम् ॥११॥
11. sarvakāmaiḥ saṁvibhaktaḥ pūjitaśca sadā bhṛśam ,
ahaṁ vai dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṁ kuryāṁ tadaphalaṁ katham.
11. sarvakāmaiḥ saṃvibhagtaḥ pūjitaḥ ca sadā bhṛśam
aham vai dhārtarāṣṭrāṇām kuryām tat aphalam katham
11. aham vai sarvakāmaiḥ saṃvibhagtaḥ ca bhṛśam sadā
pūjitaḥ dhārtarāṣṭrāṇām tat aphalam katham kuryām
11. How can I make fruitless the efforts of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, by whom I have certainly been provided with all things and always greatly honored?
उपनह्य परैर्वैरं ये मां नित्यमुपासते ।
नमस्कुर्वन्ति च सदा वसवो वासवं यथा ॥१२॥
12. upanahya parairvairaṁ ye māṁ nityamupāsate ,
namaskurvanti ca sadā vasavo vāsavaṁ yathā.
12. upanahya paraiḥ vairam ye mām nityam upāsate
namaskurvanti ca sadā vasavaḥ vāsavam yathā
12. ye paraiḥ vairam upanahya nityam mām upāsate
ca sadā namaskurvanti yathā vasavaḥ vāsavam
12. Those who, having created enmity with others, constantly attend upon me and always offer salutations, just as the Vasus do to Indra (Vāsava).
मम प्राणेन ये शत्रूञ्शक्ताः प्रतिसमासितुम् ।
मन्यन्तेऽद्य कथं तेषामहं भिन्द्यां मनोरथम् ॥१३॥
13. mama prāṇena ye śatrūñśaktāḥ pratisamāsitum ,
manyante'dya kathaṁ teṣāmahaṁ bhindyāṁ manoratham.
13. mama prāṇena ye śatrūn śaktāḥ pratisamāsitum
manyante adya katham teṣām aham bhindyām manoratham
13. ye mama prāṇena śatrūn pratisamāsitum śaktāḥ
manyante adya aham teṣām manoratham katham bhindyām
13. How can I now thwart the purpose of those who are confident that they can contend with enemies by my very strength (prāṇa)?
मया प्लवेन संग्रामं तितीर्षन्ति दुरत्ययम् ।
अपारे पारकामा ये त्यजेयं तानहं कथम् ॥१४॥
14. mayā plavena saṁgrāmaṁ titīrṣanti duratyayam ,
apāre pārakāmā ye tyajeyaṁ tānahaṁ katham.
14. mayā plavena saṃgrāmam titīrṣanti duratyayam
apāre pārakāmāḥ ye tyajeyam tān aham katham
14. ye apāre duratyayam saṃgrāmam mayā plavena
titīrṣanti pārakāmāḥ aham tān katham tyajeyam
14. How can I abandon those who, desiring to reach the other shore of this boundless, insurmountable battle, wish to cross it with me as their boat?
अयं हि कालः संप्राप्तो धार्तराष्ट्रोपजीविनाम् ।
निर्वेष्टव्यं मया तत्र प्राणानपरिरक्षता ॥१५॥
15. ayaṁ hi kālaḥ saṁprāpto dhārtarāṣṭropajīvinām ,
nirveṣṭavyaṁ mayā tatra prāṇānaparirakṣatā.
15. ayam hi kālaḥ saṃprāptaḥ dhārtarāṣṭropajīvinām
nirveṣṭavyam mayā tatra prāṇān aparirakṣatā
15. ayam hi kālaḥ dhārtarāṣṭropajīvinām saṃprāptaḥ
mayā tatra prāṇān aparirakṣatā nirveṣṭavyam
15. Indeed, this moment has arrived for those who subsist on the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra. I must act there, disregarding my own life.
कृतार्थाः सुभृता ये हि कृत्यकाल उपस्थिते ।
अनवेक्ष्य कृतं पापा विकुर्वन्त्यनवस्थिताः ॥१६॥
16. kṛtārthāḥ subhṛtā ye hi kṛtyakāla upasthite ,
anavekṣya kṛtaṁ pāpā vikurvantyanavasthitāḥ.
16. kṛtārthāḥ subhṛtāḥ ye hi kṛtyakāle upasthite
anavekṣya kṛtam pāpāḥ vikurvanti anavasthitāḥ
16. ye hi kṛtārthāḥ subhṛtāḥ kṛtyakāle upasthite
kṛtam anavekṣya pāpāḥ anavasthitāḥ vikurvanti
16. Indeed, those who, having achieved their aims and been well-maintained, act wickedly and unsteadily when the opportune moment arrives, without considering the good done for them.
राजकिल्बिषिणां तेषां भर्तृपिण्डापहारिणाम् ।
नैवायं न परो लोको विद्यते पापकर्मणाम् ॥१७॥
17. rājakilbiṣiṇāṁ teṣāṁ bhartṛpiṇḍāpahāriṇām ,
naivāyaṁ na paro loko vidyate pāpakarmaṇām.
17. rājakilbiṣiṇām teṣām bhartṛpiṇḍāpahāriṇām na
eva ayam na paraḥ lokaḥ vidyate pāpakarmaṇām
17. teṣām rājakilbiṣiṇām bhartṛpiṇḍāpahāriṇām pāpakarmaṇām
na eva ayam lokaḥ na paraḥ (lokaḥ) vidyate
17. For those who commit offenses against their ruler and betray their benefactor, and for those who perform sinful deeds (karma), neither this world nor the next exists.
धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्राणामर्थे योत्स्यामि ते सुतैः ।
बलं च शक्तिं चास्थाय न वै त्वय्यनृतं वदे ॥१८॥
18. dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putrāṇāmarthe yotsyāmi te sutaiḥ ,
balaṁ ca śaktiṁ cāsthāya na vai tvayyanṛtaṁ vade.
18. dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putrāṇām arthe yotsyāmi te sutaiḥ
balam ca śaktim ca āsthāya na vai tvayi anṛtam vade
18. dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putrāṇām arthe te sutaiḥ yotsyāmi.
balam ca śaktim ca āsthāya,
tvayi anṛtam na vai vade
18. For the sake of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons, I shall fight your sons. Relying on my strength and power (śakti), I shall certainly not speak a lie to you.
आनृशंस्यमथो वृत्तं रक्षन्सत्पुरुषोचितम् ।
अतोऽर्थकरमप्येतन्न करोम्यद्य ते वचः ॥१९॥
19. ānṛśaṁsyamatho vṛttaṁ rakṣansatpuruṣocitam ,
ato'rthakaramapyetanna karomyadya te vacaḥ.
19. ānṛśaṃsyam atha u vṛttam rakṣan satpuruṣocitam
ataḥ arthakaram api etat na karomi adya te vacaḥ
19. ānṛśaṃsyam vṛttam satpuruṣocitam rakṣan atha u
ataḥ etat arthakaram api te vacaḥ adya na karomi
19. Maintaining kindness and conduct proper for virtuous persons, I will therefore not follow your instruction today, even though it would be beneficial.
न तु तेऽयं समारम्भो मयि मोघो भविष्यति ।
वध्यान्विषह्यान्संग्रामे न हनिष्यामि ते सुतान् ।
युधिष्ठिरं च भीमं च यमौ चैवार्जुनादृते ॥२०॥
20. na tu te'yaṁ samārambho mayi mogho bhaviṣyati ,
vadhyānviṣahyānsaṁgrāme na haniṣyāmi te sutān ,
yudhiṣṭhiraṁ ca bhīmaṁ ca yamau caivārjunādṛte.
20. na tu te ayam samārambhaḥ mayi moghaḥ
bhaviṣyati vadhyān viṣahyān saṃgrāme
na haniṣyāmi te sutān yudhiṣṭhiram
ca bhīmam ca yamau ca eva arjunāt ṛte
20. tu na ayam te samārambhaḥ mayi moghaḥ
na bhaviṣyati te vadhyān viṣahyān
sutān yudhiṣṭhiram ca bhīmam ca yamau ca
eva arjunāt ṛte saṃgrāme na haniṣyāmi
20. But this endeavor of yours will not be entirely in vain concerning me. I will not kill your formidable sons - Yudhiṣṭhira, Bhīma, and the two twins - in battle, except Arjuna.
अर्जुनेन समं युद्धं मम यौधिष्ठिरे बले ।
अर्जुनं हि निहत्याजौ संप्राप्तं स्यात्फलं मया ।
यशसा चापि युज्येयं निहतः सव्यसाचिना ॥२१॥
21. arjunena samaṁ yuddhaṁ mama yaudhiṣṭhire bale ,
arjunaṁ hi nihatyājau saṁprāptaṁ syātphalaṁ mayā ,
yaśasā cāpi yujyeyaṁ nihataḥ savyasācinā.
21. arjunena samam yuddham mama yaudhiṣṭhire
bale arjunam hi nihatya ājau
samprāptam syāt phalam mayā yaśasā
ca api yujyeyam nihataḥ savyasācinā
21. mama yuddham arjunena samam yaudhiṣṭhire
bale (asti) hi ājau arjunam nihatya
mayā phalam samprāptam syāt ca api
savyasācinā nihataḥ (aham) yaśasā yujyeyam
21. My battle is with Arjuna in Yudhiṣṭhira's army. For, if Arjuna were killed in battle, the reward would certainly be attained by me. And even if I were killed by Savyasācin (Arjuna), I would certainly attain fame.
न ते जातु नशिष्यन्ति पुत्राः पञ्च यशस्विनि ।
निरर्जुनाः सकर्णा वा सार्जुना वा हते मयि ॥२२॥
22. na te jātu naśiṣyanti putrāḥ pañca yaśasvini ,
nirarjunāḥ sakarṇā vā sārjunā vā hate mayi.
22. na te jātu naśiṣyanti putrāḥ pañca yaśasvini
nirarjunāḥ sakarṇāḥ vā sārjunāḥ vā hate mayi
22. yaśasvini te pañca putrāḥ jātu na naśiṣyanti (te) nirarjunāḥ sakarṇāḥ vā,
vā hate mayi sārjunāḥ (bhaviṣyanti)
22. O glorious one, your five sons will never perish. If I am killed, they will remain with Arjuna; or (if Arjuna is killed), they will be without Arjuna, but with Karṇa.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इति कर्णवचः श्रुत्वा कुन्ती दुःखात्प्रवेपती ।
उवाच पुत्रमाश्लिष्य कर्णं धैर्यादकम्पितम् ॥२३॥
23. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
iti karṇavacaḥ śrutvā kuntī duḥkhātpravepatī ,
uvāca putramāśliṣya karṇaṁ dhairyādakampitam.
23. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca iti karṇavacaḥ śrutvā kuntī duḥkhāt
pravepatī uvāca putram āśliṣya karṇaṃ dhairyāt akampitam
23. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca iti karṇavacaḥ śrutvā duḥkhāt pravepatī
kuntī putram karṇaṃ dhairyāt akampitam āśliṣya uvāca
23. Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard these words from Karṇa, Kuntī, trembling with sorrow, embraced her son and spoke to Karṇa, who remained unshaken in his steadfastness.
एवं वै भाव्यमेतेन क्षयं यास्यन्ति कौरवाः ।
यथा त्वं भाषसे कर्ण दैवं तु बलवत्तरम् ॥२४॥
24. evaṁ vai bhāvyametena kṣayaṁ yāsyanti kauravāḥ ,
yathā tvaṁ bhāṣase karṇa daivaṁ tu balavattaram.
24. evaṃ vai bhāvyam etena kṣayaṃ yāsyanti kauravāḥ
yathā tvam bhāṣase karṇa daivam tu balavattaram
24. evaṃ vai etena bhāvyam kauravāḥ kṣayaṃ yāsyanti
karṇa yathā tvam bhāṣase daivam tu balavattaram
24. "Indeed, this is how it must be; by this, the Kauravas will meet their destruction. As you declare, Karṇa, destiny (daivam) is truly more powerful."
त्वया चतुर्णां भ्रातॄणामभयं शत्रुकर्शन ।
दत्तं तत्प्रतिजानीहि संगरप्रतिमोचनम् ॥२५॥
25. tvayā caturṇāṁ bhrātṝṇāmabhayaṁ śatrukarśana ,
dattaṁ tatpratijānīhi saṁgarapratimocanam.
25. tvayā caturṇāṃ bhrātṝṇām abhayam śatrukārśana
dattam tat pratijānīhi saṃgarapratimocanam
25. śatrukārśana tvayā caturṇāṃ bhrātṝṇām abhayam
dattam tat saṃgarapratimocanam pratijānīhi
25. "O tormentor of foes (śatrukārśana), you have granted safety to your four brothers. Acknowledge that promise as their liberation from the conflict."
अनामयं स्वस्ति चेति पृथाथो कर्णमब्रवीत् ।
तां कर्णोऽभ्यवदत्प्रीतस्ततस्तौ जग्मतुः पृथक् ॥२६॥
26. anāmayaṁ svasti ceti pṛthātho karṇamabravīt ,
tāṁ karṇo'bhyavadatprītastatastau jagmatuḥ pṛthak.
26. anāmayam svasti ca iti pṛthā atho karṇam abravīt tām
karṇaḥ abhyavadat prītaḥ tataḥ tau jagmatuḥ pṛthak
26. iti anāmayam ca svasti pṛthā atho karṇam abravīt
prītaḥ karṇaḥ tām abhyavadat tataḥ tau pṛthak jagmatuḥ
26. "May you be well and free from harm (anāmayam) and prosperous (svasti)," thus Pṛthā then said to Karṇa. Karṇa, pleased, replied to her. Then they both departed separately.
