शिखण्डिवाक्यं श्रुत्वाथ स यक्षो भरतर्षभ ।
प्रोवाच मनसा चिन्त्य दैवेनोपनिपीडितः ।
भवितव्यं तथा तद्धि मम दुःखाय कौरव ॥१॥

1. Bhishma said: O best of Bharatas, O Kuru, that Yaksha, having heard Shikhandin's words, and having pondered deeply, afflicted by destiny, then spoke: 'Indeed, this is destined to happen, and it will lead to my sorrow.'
भद्रे कामं करिष्यामि समयं तु निबोध मे ।
किंचित्कालान्तरं दास्ये पुंलिङ्गं स्वमिदं तव ।
आगन्तव्यं त्वया काले सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥२॥
2. bhadre kāmaṁ kariṣyāmi samayaṁ tu nibodha me ,
kiṁcitkālāntaraṁ dāsye puṁliṅgaṁ svamidaṁ tava ,
āgantavyaṁ tvayā kāle satyametadbravīmi te.
2. bhadre kāmaṃ kariṣyāmi samayaṃ tu
nibodha me | kiñcitkālāntaraṃ dāsye

2. bhadre,
ahaṃ kāmaṃ kariṣyāmi; tu me samayaṃ nibodha.
kiñcitkālāntaraṃ tava idaṃ svam puṃliṅgaṃ dāsye.
tvayā kāle āgantavyaṃ; etat satyam te bravīmi.
2. O gentle lady, I will certainly fulfill your desire, but understand my condition. After some time, I will give back this male form of yours. You must come at the appointed time; I speak this truth to you.
प्रभुः संकल्पसिद्धोऽस्मि कामरूपी विहंगमः ।
मत्प्रसादात्पुरं चैव त्राहि बन्धूंश्च केवलान् ॥३॥
3. prabhuḥ saṁkalpasiddho'smi kāmarūpī vihaṁgamaḥ ,
matprasādātpuraṁ caiva trāhi bandhūṁśca kevalān.
3. prabhuḥ saṃkalpasiddhaḥ asmi kāmarūpī vihaṃgamaḥ |
matprasādāt puraṃ ca eva trāhi bandhūn ca kevalān
3. ahaṃ prabhuḥ,
saṃkalpasiddhaḥ asmi,

kevalān bandhūn ca trāhi.
3. I am a powerful lord (prabhu), one whose resolutions are always fulfilled, and a bird capable of assuming any form (kāmarūpī). By my grace, protect your city and all your kinsmen.
स्त्रीलिङ्गं धारयिष्यामि त्वदीयं पार्थिवात्मजे ।
सत्यं मे प्रतिजानीहि करिष्यामि प्रियं तव ॥४॥
4. strīliṅgaṁ dhārayiṣyāmi tvadīyaṁ pārthivātmaje ,
satyaṁ me pratijānīhi kariṣyāmi priyaṁ tava.

4. O daughter of the king, I will assume your female form. Promise me this truth: I will do what is pleasing to you.
शिखण्ड्युवाच ।
प्रतिदास्यामि भगवँल्लिङ्गं पुनरिदं तव ।
किंचित्कालान्तरं स्त्रीत्वं धारयस्व निशाचर ॥५॥
5. śikhaṇḍyuvāca ,
pratidāsyāmi bhagavaँlliṅgaṁ punaridaṁ tava ,
kiṁcitkālāntaraṁ strītvaṁ dhārayasva niśācara.
5. śikhaṇḍī uvāca | pratidāsyāmi bhagavan liṅgaṃ punaḥ idaṃ
tava | kiñcitkālāntaraṃ strītvaṃ dhārayasva niśācara
5. śikhaṇḍī uvāca: bhagavan,
ahaṃ tava idaṃ liṅgaṃ punaḥ pratidāsyāmi.
niśācara,
kiñcitkālāntaraṃ strītvaṃ dhārayasva.
5. Śikhaṇḍin said: 'O revered one (bhagavan), I will return this form of yours. For some time, O night-wanderer, please maintain the female state.'
प्रतिप्रयाते दाशार्णे पार्थिवे हेमवर्मणि ।
कन्यैवाहं भविष्यामि पुरुषस्त्वं भविष्यसि ॥६॥
6. pratiprayāte dāśārṇe pārthive hemavarmaṇi ,
kanyaivāhaṁ bhaviṣyāmi puruṣastvaṁ bhaviṣyasi.
6. pratiprayāte dāśārṇe pārthive hemavarmaṇi kanyā
eva aham bhaviṣyāmi puruṣaḥ tvam bhaviṣyasi
6. pārthive dāśārṇe hemavarmaṇi pratiprayāte aham
kanyā eva bhaviṣyāmi tvam puruṣaḥ bhaviṣyasi
6. When King Hemavarman of Daśārṇa returns, I (Sthūṇākarṇa) shall remain a girl, and you (Śikhaṇḍī) shall remain a man.
भीष्म उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा समयं तत्र चक्राते तावुभौ नृप ।
अन्योन्यस्यानभिद्रोहे तौ संक्रामयतां ततः ॥७॥
7. bhīṣma uvāca ,
ityuktvā samayaṁ tatra cakrāte tāvubhau nṛpa ,
anyonyasyānabhidrohe tau saṁkrāmayatāṁ tataḥ.

nṛpa anyonyasya anabhidrohe tau saṃkrāmayatām tataḥ

7. Bhishma said: Having spoken thus, O king (nṛpa), those two then made an agreement there for mutual non-aggression, and they exchanged their forms.
स्त्रीलिङ्गं धारयामास स्थूणो यक्षो नराधिप ।
यक्षरूपं च तद्दीप्तं शिखण्डी प्रत्यपद्यत ॥८॥
8. strīliṅgaṁ dhārayāmāsa sthūṇo yakṣo narādhipa ,
yakṣarūpaṁ ca taddīptaṁ śikhaṇḍī pratyapadyata.

yakṣarūpam ca tat dīptam śikhaṇḍī prati apadyata

8. O king (narādhipa), Sthūṇā, the yakṣa, assumed the female form, and Śikhaṇḍī obtained that splendid yakṣa form.
ततः शिखण्डी पाञ्चाल्यः पुंस्त्वमासाद्य पार्थिव ।
विवेश नगरं हृष्टः पितरं च समासदत् ।
यथावृत्तं तु तत्सर्वमाचख्यौ द्रुपदस्य च ॥९॥
9. tataḥ śikhaṇḍī pāñcālyaḥ puṁstvamāsādya pārthiva ,
viveśa nagaraṁ hṛṣṭaḥ pitaraṁ ca samāsadat ,
yathāvṛttaṁ tu tatsarvamācakhyau drupadasya ca.
9. tataḥ śikhaṇḍī pāñcālyaḥ puṃstvam
āsādya pārthiva viveśa nagaram hṛṣṭaḥ
pitaram ca samāsadat yathāvṛttam
tu tat sarvam ācakhyau drupadasya ca
9. pārthiva tataḥ pāñcālyaḥ śikhaṇḍī
puṃstvam āsādya hṛṣṭaḥ nagaram viveśa
ca pitaram samāsadat tu ca drupadasya
tat sarvam yathāvṛttam ācakhyau
9. Then, O king (pārthiva), Śikhaṇḍī, the Pāñcāla prince, having obtained manhood, entered the city delighted. He met his father and recounted the entire incident (yathāvṛttam) to Drupada.
द्रुपदस्तस्य तच्छ्रुत्वा हर्षमाहारयत्परम् ।
सभार्यस्तच्च सस्मार महेश्वरवचस्तदा ॥१०॥
10. drupadastasya tacchrutvā harṣamāhārayatparam ,
sabhāryastacca sasmāra maheśvaravacastadā.
10. drupadaḥ tasya tat śrutvā harṣam āhārayat param
sabhāryaḥ tat ca sasmāra maheśvaravacaḥ tadā
10. drupadaḥ tasya tat śrutvā param harṣam āhārayat
tadā ca sabhāryaḥ tat maheśvaravacaḥ sasmāra
10. Upon hearing that, Drupada experienced supreme joy. And then, he, accompanied by his wife, recalled the words of Maheśvara (Śiva).
ततः संप्रेषयामास दशार्णाधिपतेर्नृप ।
पुरुषोऽयं मम सुतः श्रद्धत्तां मे भवानिति ॥११॥
11. tataḥ saṁpreṣayāmāsa daśārṇādhipaternṛpa ,
puruṣo'yaṁ mama sutaḥ śraddhattāṁ me bhavāniti.
11. tataḥ sampreṣayāmāsa daśārṇādhipateḥ nṛpa
puruṣaḥ ayam mama sutaḥ śraddhattām me bhavān iti
11. tataḥ nṛpa saḥ daśārṇādhipateḥ sampreṣayāmāsa
iti ayam puruṣaḥ mama sutaḥ bhavān me śraddhattām
11. Then, O king (nṛpa), Drupada sent a message to the ruler of Daśārṇa, saying: 'This person is my son. May your honor place faith (śraddhā) in me!'
अथ दाशार्णको राजा सहसाभ्यागमत्तदा ।
पाञ्चालराजं द्रुपदं दुःखामर्षसमन्वितः ॥१२॥
12. atha dāśārṇako rājā sahasābhyāgamattadā ,
pāñcālarājaṁ drupadaṁ duḥkhāmarṣasamanvitaḥ.
12. atha dāśārṇakaḥ rājā sahasā abhyāgamat tadā
pāñcālarājam drupadam duḥkhāmarṣasamanvitaḥ
12. atha tadā dāśārṇakaḥ rājā duḥkhāmarṣasamanvitaḥ
sahasā pāñcālarājam drupadam abhyāgamat
12. Then, at that time, the king of Daśārṇa suddenly approached King Drupada of Pañcāla, filled with sorrow and indignation.
ततः काम्पिल्यमासाद्य दशार्णाधिपतिस्तदा ।
प्रेषयामास सत्कृत्य दूतं ब्रह्मविदां वरम् ॥१३॥
13. tataḥ kāmpilyamāsādya daśārṇādhipatistadā ,
preṣayāmāsa satkṛtya dūtaṁ brahmavidāṁ varam.
13. tataḥ kāmpilyam āsādya daśārṇādhipatiḥ tadā
preṣayāmāsa satkṛtya dūtam brahmavidām varam
13. tataḥ tadā daśārṇādhipatiḥ kāmpilyam āsādya
satkṛtya brahmavidām varam dūtam preṣayāmāsa
13. Then, having reached Kāmpilya, the ruler of Daśārṇa, at that time, respectfully sent a messenger who was the foremost among the knowers of Brahman (brahman).
ब्रूहि मद्वचनाद्दूत पाञ्चाल्यं तं नृपाधमम् ।
यद्वै कन्यां स्वकन्यार्थे वृतवानसि दुर्मते ।
फलं तस्यावलेपस्य द्रक्ष्यस्यद्य न संशयः ॥१४॥
14. brūhi madvacanāddūta pāñcālyaṁ taṁ nṛpādhamam ,
yadvai kanyāṁ svakanyārthe vṛtavānasi durmate ,
phalaṁ tasyāvalepasya drakṣyasyadya na saṁśayaḥ.
14. brūhi madvacanāt dūta pāñcālyam tam
nṛpādhamam yat vai kanyām svakanyārthe
vṛtavān asi durmate phalam tasya
avalepasya drakṣyasi adya na saṃśayaḥ
14. dūta madvacanāt tam nṛpādhamam durmate
pāñcālyam brūhi yat vai svakanyārthe
kanyām vṛtavān asi adya tasya
avalepasya phalam na saṃśayaḥ drakṣyasi
14. O messenger, tell that evil-minded Pāñcālya, that worst of kings, from my words: 'Because you indeed chose a maiden for the sake of your own daughter, you will undoubtedly see the consequences of that insolence today.'
एवमुक्तस्तु तेनासौ ब्राह्मणो राजसत्तम ।
दूतः प्रयातो नगरं दाशार्णनृपचोदितः ॥१५॥
15. evamuktastu tenāsau brāhmaṇo rājasattama ,
dūtaḥ prayāto nagaraṁ dāśārṇanṛpacoditaḥ.
15. evam uktaḥ tu tena asau brāhmaṇaḥ rājasattama
dūtaḥ prayātaḥ nagaram dāśārṇanṛpacoditaḥ
15. rājasattama tena evam uktaḥ tu asau brāhmaṇaḥ
dūtaḥ dāśārṇanṛpacoditaḥ nagaram prayātaḥ
15. O best of kings, that Brahmin messenger, thus addressed by him and urged by the king of Daśārṇa, set out for the city.
तत आसादयामास पुरोधा द्रुपदं पुरे ।
तस्मै पाञ्चालको राजा गामर्घ्यं च सुसत्कृतम् ।
प्रापयामास राजेन्द्र सह तेन शिखण्डिना ॥१६॥
16. tata āsādayāmāsa purodhā drupadaṁ pure ,
tasmai pāñcālako rājā gāmarghyaṁ ca susatkṛtam ,
prāpayāmāsa rājendra saha tena śikhaṇḍinā.
16. tataḥ āsādayāmāsa purodhāḥ drupadam
pure tasmai pāñcālakaḥ rājā
gām arghyam ca susatkṛtam prāpayāmāsa
rājendra saha tena śikhaṇḍinā
16. rājendra tataḥ purodhāḥ pure
drupadam āsādayāmāsa pāñcālakaḥ rājā
tena śikhaṇḍinā saha tasmai
susatkṛtam gām ca arghyam prāpayāmāsa
16. Then, O best of kings (Rajendra), the chief priest met Drupada in the city. The Pāñcāla king, along with that Śikhaṇḍin, had a well-honored cow and an offering brought to him (the priest).
तां पूजां नाभ्यनन्दत्स वाक्यं चेदमुवाच ह ।
यदुक्तं तेन वीरेण राज्ञा काञ्चनवर्मणा ॥१७॥
17. tāṁ pūjāṁ nābhyanandatsa vākyaṁ cedamuvāca ha ,
yaduktaṁ tena vīreṇa rājñā kāñcanavarmaṇā.
17. tām pūjām na abhyanandat saḥ vākyam ca idam uvāca
ha yat uktam tena vīreṇa rājñā kāñcanavarmaṇā
17. saḥ tām pūjām na abhyanandat ca idam vākyam ha
uvāca yat tena vīreṇa rājñā kāñcanavarmaṇā uktam
17. He (the priest) did not approve of that honoring, and he spoke these words, which had been spoken by that brave king Kāñcanavarman.
यत्तेऽहमधमाचार दुहित्रर्थेऽस्मि वञ्चितः ।
तस्य पापस्य करणात्फलं प्राप्नुहि दुर्मते ॥१८॥
18. yatte'hamadhamācāra duhitrarthe'smi vañcitaḥ ,
tasya pāpasya karaṇātphalaṁ prāpnuhi durmate.
18. yat te aham adhamācāra duhitṛ-arthe asmi vañcitaḥ
tasya pāpasya karaṇāt phalam prāpnuhi durmate
18. aham adhamācāra durmate yat te duhitṛ-arthe asmi
vañcitaḥ tasya pāpasya karaṇāt phalam prāpnuhi
18. Because I have been cheated by you, O man of vile conduct, regarding my daughter, you, O foolish-minded one, shall receive the consequence of that sin.
देहि युद्धं नरपते ममाद्य रणमूर्धनि ।
उद्धरिष्यामि ते सद्यः सामात्यसुतबान्धवम् ॥१९॥
19. dehi yuddhaṁ narapate mamādya raṇamūrdhani ,
uddhariṣyāmi te sadyaḥ sāmātyasutabāndhavam.
19. dehi yuddham narapate mama adya raṇa-mūrdhani
uddhariṣyāmi te sadyaḥ sa-āmātya-suta-bāndhavam
19. narapate adya raṇa-mūrdhani mama yuddham dehi (aham)
sadyaḥ te sa-āmātya-suta-bāndhavam uddhariṣyāmi
19. O king, give me battle today at the forefront of the fight! I will immediately destroy you, along with your ministers, sons, and relatives.
तदुपालम्भसंयुक्तं श्रावितः किल पार्थिवः ।
दशार्णपतिदूतेन मन्त्रिमध्ये पुरोधसा ॥२०॥
20. tadupālambhasaṁyuktaṁ śrāvitaḥ kila pārthivaḥ ,
daśārṇapatidūtena mantrimadhye purodhasā.
20. tat upālambha-saṃyuktam śrāvitaḥ kila pārthivaḥ
daśārṇa-pati-dūtena mantri-madhye purodhasā
20. kila pārthivaḥ tat upālambha-saṃyuktam
daśārṇa-pati-dūtena mantri-madhye purodhasā śrāvitaḥ
20. Indeed, the king was made to hear that reproachful message, delivered by the messenger of the king of Daśārṇa, in the presence of his ministers and chief priest.
अब्रवीद्भरतश्रेष्ठ द्रुपदः प्रणयानतः ।
यदाह मां भवान्ब्रह्मन्संबन्धिवचनाद्वचः ।
तस्योत्तरं प्रतिवचो दूत एव वदिष्यति ॥२१॥
21. abravīdbharataśreṣṭha drupadaḥ praṇayānataḥ ,
yadāha māṁ bhavānbrahmansaṁbandhivacanādvacaḥ ,
tasyottaraṁ prativaco dūta eva vadiṣyati.
21. abravīt bharata-śreṣṭhaḥ drupadaḥ
praṇaya-ānataḥ yat āha mām bhavān brahman
sambandhi-vacanāt vacaḥ tasya
uttaram prativacaḥ dūtaḥ eva vadiṣyati
21. bharata-śreṣṭha praṇaya-ānataḥ drupadaḥ
abravīt brahman bhavān yat vacaḥ
mām sambandhi-vacanāt āha tasya
uttaram prativacaḥ dūtaḥ eva vadiṣyati
21. O best among the Bhāratas, Drupada, bowing with respect, said: 'O Brahmin, regarding the words you spoke to me concerning our relatives, the messenger himself will give the reply.'
ततः संप्रेषयामास द्रुपदोऽपि महात्मने ।
हिरण्यवर्मणे दूतं ब्राह्मणं वेदपारगम् ॥२२॥
22. tataḥ saṁpreṣayāmāsa drupado'pi mahātmane ,
hiraṇyavarmaṇe dūtaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ vedapāragam.
22. tataḥ sampreṣayāmāsa drupadaḥ api mahātmane
hiraṇyavarmaṇe dūtam brāhmaṇam vedapāragam
22. tataḥ drupadaḥ api vedapāragam brāhmaṇam
dūtam mahātmane hiraṇyavarmaṇe sampreṣayāmāsa
22. Then, Drupada also sent a messenger, a Brahmin proficient in the Vedas, to the great-souled Hiranyavarman.
समागम्य तु राज्ञा स दशार्णपतिना तदा ।
तद्वाक्यमाददे राजन्यदुक्तं द्रुपदेन ह ॥२३॥
23. samāgamya tu rājñā sa daśārṇapatinā tadā ,
tadvākyamādade rājanyaduktaṁ drupadena ha.
23. samāgamya tu rājñā saḥ daśārṇapatinā tadā
tat vākyam ādade rājan yat uktam drupadena ha
23. rājan tadā saḥ tu daśārṇapatinā rājñā samāgamya
drupadena uktam yat vākyam ha tat ādade
23. Having met that king, the lord of Daśārṇa, at that time, he then delivered the message, O King, which Drupada had indeed spoken.
आगमः क्रियतां व्यक्तं कुमारो वै सुतो मम ।
मिथ्यैतदुक्तं केनापि तन्न श्रद्धेयमित्युत ॥२४॥
24. āgamaḥ kriyatāṁ vyaktaṁ kumāro vai suto mama ,
mithyaitaduktaṁ kenāpi tanna śraddheyamityuta.
24. āgamaḥ kriyatām vyaktam kumāraḥ vai sutaḥ mama
mithyā etat uktam kena api tat na śraddheyam iti uta
24. vyaktam āgamaḥ kriyatām kumāraḥ vai mama sutaḥ kena
api etat uktam mithyā tat na śraddheyam iti uta
24. Let this be made clear: 'The prince (Kumāra) is certainly my son.' What has been said by anyone to the contrary is false; therefore, it should not be believed.
ततः स राजा द्रुपदस्य श्रुत्वा विमर्शयुक्तो युवतीर्वरिष्ठाः ।
संप्रेषयामास सुचारुरूपाः शिखण्डिनं स्त्री पुमान्वेति वेत्तुम् ॥२५॥
25. tataḥ sa rājā drupadasya śrutvā; vimarśayukto yuvatīrvariṣṭhāḥ ,
saṁpreṣayāmāsa sucārurūpāḥ; śikhaṇḍinaṁ strī pumānveti vettum.
25. tataḥ saḥ rājā drupadasya śrutvā
vimarśayuktaḥ yuvatīḥ variṣṭhāḥ
sampreṣayāmāsa sucārurūpāḥ
śikhaṇḍinam strī pumān vā iti vettum
25. tataḥ drupadasya śrutvā saḥ rājā
vimarśayuktaḥ śikhaṇḍinam strī
pumān vā iti vettum variṣṭhāḥ
sucārurūpāḥ yuvatīḥ sampreṣayāmāsa
25. Then, having heard Drupada's message, that king, full of deliberation, sent out excellent, beautiful young women to ascertain whether Śikhaṇḍin was a woman or a man.
ताः प्रेषितास्तत्त्वभावं विदित्वा प्रीत्या राज्ञे तच्छशंसुर्हि सर्वम् ।
शिखण्डिनं पुरुषं कौरवेन्द्र दशार्णराजाय महानुभावम् ॥२६॥
26. tāḥ preṣitāstattvabhāvaṁ viditvā; prītyā rājñe tacchaśaṁsurhi sarvam ,
śikhaṇḍinaṁ puruṣaṁ kauravendra; daśārṇarājāya mahānubhāvam.
26. tāḥ preṣitāḥ tattvabhāvam viditvā
prītyā rājñe tat śaśaṃsuḥ hi
sarvam śikhaṇḍinam puruṣam kauravendra
daśārṇarājāya mahānubhāvam

puruṣam tat sarvam hi śaśaṃsuḥ
26. O best of Kurus, those (women) who were sent, having learned the true nature (of Śikhaṇḍin), affectionately reported everything to the King of Daśārṇa: that Śikhaṇḍin, the greatly glorious one, was a man.
ततः कृत्वा तु राजा स आगमं प्रीतिमानथ ।
संबन्धिना समागम्य हृष्टो वासमुवास ह ॥२७॥
27. tataḥ kṛtvā tu rājā sa āgamaṁ prītimānatha ,
saṁbandhinā samāgamya hṛṣṭo vāsamuvāsa ha.

27. Then, that king, being joyful and affectionate, having arranged for the arrival (of the relative), and having met with his relative, indeed resided happily.
शिखण्डिने च मुदितः प्रादाद्वित्तं जनेश्वरः ।
हस्तिनोऽश्वांश्च गाश्चैव दास्यो बहुशतास्तथा ।
पूजितश्च प्रतिययौ निवर्त्य तनयां किल ॥२८॥
28. śikhaṇḍine ca muditaḥ prādādvittaṁ janeśvaraḥ ,
hastino'śvāṁśca gāścaiva dāsyo bahuśatāstathā ,
pūjitaśca pratiyayau nivartya tanayāṁ kila.

28. And the king (of Daśārṇa), delighted, gave wealth to Śikhaṇḍin: elephants, horses, and cows, as well as hundreds of female servants. And (Drupada, Śikhaṇḍin's father), being honored, returned, having left his daughter (Śikhaṇḍin) there.
विनीतकिल्बिषे प्रीते हेमवर्मणि पार्थिवे ।
प्रतियाते तु दाशार्णे हृष्टरूपा शिखण्डिनी ॥२९॥

29. When King Hemavarman, the ruler, was pleased and freed from blemish, and when (Drupada, Śikhaṇḍin's father), who was in Daśārṇa, had indeed departed, then Śikhaṇḍinī appeared cheerful.
कस्यचित्त्वथ कालस्य कुबेरो नरवाहनः ।
लोकानुयात्रां कुर्वाणः स्थूणस्यागान्निवेशनम् ॥३०॥
30. kasyacittvatha kālasya kubero naravāhanaḥ ,
lokānuyātrāṁ kurvāṇaḥ sthūṇasyāgānniveśanam.

30. Then, after some time, Kubera, whose vehicle is men, undertaking a tour among people, arrived at Sthūṇa's dwelling.
स तद्गृहस्योपरि वर्तमान आलोकयामास धनाधिगोप्ता ।
स्थूणस्य यक्षस्य निशाम्य वेश्म स्वलंकृतं माल्यगुणैर्विचित्रम् ॥३१॥
31. sa tadgṛhasyopari vartamāna; ālokayāmāsa dhanādhigoptā ,
sthūṇasya yakṣasya niśāmya veśma; svalaṁkṛtaṁ mālyaguṇairvicitram.

31. Being situated above that house, he, the protector of wealth, Kubera, carefully observed the dwelling of Sthūṇa, the yakṣa (yakṣa), which was well-decorated and made splendid with various garlands.
लाजैश्च गन्धैश्च तथा वितानैरभ्यर्चितं धूपनधूपितं च ।
ध्वजैः पताकाभिरलंकृतं च भक्ष्यान्नपेयामिषदत्तहोमम् ॥३२॥
32. lājaiśca gandhaiśca tathā vitānai;rabhyarcitaṁ dhūpanadhūpitaṁ ca ,
dhvajaiḥ patākābhiralaṁkṛtaṁ ca; bhakṣyānnapeyāmiṣadattahomam.

32. It was adorned with fried grains, fragrances, and canopies; fumigated with incense; decorated with flags and banners; and where offerings of various edibles, food, drinks, and meat were given in a fire ritual.
तत्स्थानं तस्य दृष्ट्वा तु सर्वतः समलंकृतम् ।
अथाब्रवीद्यक्षपतिस्तान्यक्षाननुगांस्तदा ॥३३॥
33. tatsthānaṁ tasya dṛṣṭvā tu sarvataḥ samalaṁkṛtam ,
athābravīdyakṣapatistānyakṣānanugāṁstadā.
33. tat sthānam tasya dṛṣṭvā tu sarvataḥ samalankṛtam
atha abravīt yakṣapatiḥ tān yakṣān anugān tadā

33. Having thus seen his dwelling, which was completely well-decorated, Kubera, the lord of yakṣas (yakṣa), then spoke to his attendant yakṣas (yakṣa).
स्वलंकृतमिदं वेश्म स्थूणस्यामितविक्रमाः ।
नोपसर्पति मां चापि कस्मादद्य सुमन्दधीः ॥३४॥
34. svalaṁkṛtamidaṁ veśma sthūṇasyāmitavikramāḥ ,
nopasarpati māṁ cāpi kasmādadya sumandadhīḥ.
34. sva-alaṅkṛtam idam veśma sthūṇasya amita-vikramāḥ
na upasarpati mām ca api kasmāt adya su-manda-dhīḥ
34. amita-vikramāḥ sthūṇasya sva-alaṅkṛtam idam veśma
adya su-manda-dhīḥ mām ca api kasmāt na upasarpati
34. O you of immense valor, why does that dull-witted one not approach me even today, in this well-decorated abode of Sthūṇa?
यस्माज्जानन्सुमन्दात्मा मामसौ नोपसर्पति ।
तस्मात्तस्मै महादण्डो धार्यः स्यादिति मे मतिः ॥३५॥
35. yasmājjānansumandātmā māmasau nopasarpati ,
tasmāttasmai mahādaṇḍo dhāryaḥ syāditi me matiḥ.
35. yasmāt jānan su-manda-ātmā mām asau na upasarpati
tasmāt tasmai mahā-daṇḍaḥ dhāryaḥ syāt iti me matiḥ

35. Because that dull-witted one, knowing who I am, does not approach me, therefore a severe punishment (daṇḍa) should be imposed upon him - this is my opinion.
यक्षा ऊचुः ।
द्रुपदस्य सुता राजन्राज्ञो जाता शिखण्डिनी ।
तस्यै निमित्ते कस्मिंश्चित्प्रादात्पुरुषलक्षणम् ॥३६॥
36. yakṣā ūcuḥ ,
drupadasya sutā rājanrājño jātā śikhaṇḍinī ,
tasyai nimitte kasmiṁścitprādātpuruṣalakṣaṇam.
36. yakṣāḥ ūcuḥ drupadasya sutā rājan rājñaḥ jātā śikhaṇḍinī
tasyai nimitte kasmin cit prādāt puruṣa-lakṣaṇam

36. The Yakṣas said, 'O King, Śikhaṇḍinī was born as the daughter of King Drupada. On a certain occasion, [a Yakṣa] bestowed upon her the physical characteristics of a man (puruṣa).'
अग्रहील्लक्षणं स्त्रीणां स्त्रीभूतस्तिष्ठते गृहे ।
नोपसर्पति तेनासौ सव्रीडः स्त्रीस्वरूपवान् ॥३७॥
37. agrahīllakṣaṇaṁ strīṇāṁ strībhūtastiṣṭhate gṛhe ,
nopasarpati tenāsau savrīḍaḥ strīsvarūpavān.
37. agrahīt lakṣaṇam strīṇām strī-bhūtaḥ tiṣṭhate gṛhe
na upasarpati tena asau sa-vrīḍaḥ strī-svarūpa-vān
37. saḥ strīṇām lakṣaṇam agrahīt; strī-bhūtaḥ gṛhe tiṣṭhate.
tena sa-vrīḍaḥ strī-svarūpa-vān asau na upasarpati.
37. He accepted the characteristics of women; having transformed into a woman, he stays in the house. Therefore, being ashamed and having the appearance of a woman, he does not approach you.
एतस्मात्कारणाद्राजन्स्थूणो न त्वाद्य पश्यति ।
श्रुत्वा कुरु यथान्यायं विमानमिह तिष्ठताम् ॥३८॥
38. etasmātkāraṇādrājansthūṇo na tvādya paśyati ,
śrutvā kuru yathānyāyaṁ vimānamiha tiṣṭhatām.
38. etasmāt kāraṇāt rājan sthūṇaḥ na tvā adya paśyati
śrutvā kuru yathānyāyam vimānam iha tiṣṭhatām
38. rājan etasmāt kāraṇāt sthūṇaḥ adya tvā na paśyati

38. For this reason, O King, Sthūṇa does not see you today. Having heard this, act according to justice (dharma) and provide a suitable dwelling for those who reside here.
भीष्म उवाच ।
आनीयतां स्थूण इति ततो यक्षाधिपोऽब्रवीत् ।
कर्तास्मि निग्रहं तस्येत्युवाच स पुनः पुनः ॥३९॥
39. bhīṣma uvāca ,
ānīyatāṁ sthūṇa iti tato yakṣādhipo'bravīt ,
kartāsmi nigrahaṁ tasyetyuvāca sa punaḥ punaḥ.

39. Bhishma said: Then the chief of the Yakshas said, 'Let Sthūṇa be brought!' He repeatedly declared, 'I will punish him!'
सोऽभ्यगच्छत यक्षेन्द्रमाहूतः पृथिवीपते ।
स्त्रीस्वरूपो महाराज तस्थौ व्रीडासमन्वितः ॥४०॥
40. so'bhyagacchata yakṣendramāhūtaḥ pṛthivīpate ,
strīsvarūpo mahārāja tasthau vrīḍāsamanvitaḥ.
40. saḥ abhyagacchat yakṣendram āhūtaḥ pṛthivīpate
strīsvārūpaḥ mahārāja tasthau vrīḍāsamanvitaḥ
40. pṛthivīpate āhūtaḥ saḥ yakṣendram abhyagacchat

40. O protector of the earth, being summoned, he went to the chief of the Yakshas. O great King, he stood there in the form of a woman, filled with shame.
तं शशाप सुसंक्रुद्धो धनदः कुरुनन्दन ।
एवमेव भवत्वस्य स्त्रीत्वं पापस्य गुह्यकाः ॥४१॥
41. taṁ śaśāpa susaṁkruddho dhanadaḥ kurunandana ,
evameva bhavatvasya strītvaṁ pāpasya guhyakāḥ.
41. tam śaśāpa susaṃkruddhaḥ dhanadaḥ kurunandana
evam eva bhavatu asya strītvam pāpasya guhyakāḥ
41. kurunandana susaṃkruddhaḥ dhanadaḥ tam śaśāpa

41. O delight of the Kurus (kurunandana), the enraged Kubera cursed him, saying: 'Let this sinful one (pāpasya) indeed retain his womanhood (strītvam)! O Guhyakas!'
ततोऽब्रवीद्यक्षपतिर्महात्मा यस्माददास्त्ववमन्येह यक्षान् ।
शिखण्डिने लक्षणं पापबुद्धे स्त्रीलक्षणं चाग्रहीः पापकर्मन् ॥४२॥
42. tato'bravīdyakṣapatirmahātmā; yasmādadāstvavamanyeha yakṣān ,
śikhaṇḍine lakṣaṇaṁ pāpabuddhe; strīlakṣaṇaṁ cāgrahīḥ pāpakarman.
42. tataḥ abravīt yakṣapatiḥ mahātmā
yasmāt adāḥ tvam avamanya iha yakṣān
śikhaṇḍine lakṣaṇam pāpabuddhe
strīlakṣaṇam ca agrahīḥ pāpakarmant

pāpabuddhe pāpakarmant yasmāt tvam
iha yakṣān avamanya śikhaṇḍine
lakṣaṇam adāḥ ca strīlakṣaṇam agrahīḥ
42. Then the great-souled lord of yakṣas spoke: "Because you, O evil-minded one, despising the yakṣas here, gave masculine characteristics to Śikhaṇḍin, and you, O evil-doer, accepted feminine characteristics..."
अप्रवृत्तं सुदुर्बुद्धे यस्मादेतत्कृतं त्वया ।
तस्मादद्य प्रभृत्येव त्वं स्त्री स पुरुषस्तथा ॥४३॥
43. apravṛttaṁ sudurbuddhe yasmādetatkṛtaṁ tvayā ,
tasmādadya prabhṛtyeva tvaṁ strī sa puruṣastathā.
43. apravṛttam sudurbuddhe yasmāt etat kṛtam tvayā
tasmāt adya prabhṛti eva tvam strī saḥ puruṣaḥ tathā
43. sudurbuddhe yasmāt tvayā etat apravṛttam kṛtam,
tasmāt adya prabhṛti eva tvam strī,
saḥ ca puruṣaḥ tathā (bhaviṣyati).
43. O very evil-minded one, because this improper act was done by you, therefore, from today onwards, you shall be a woman, and he (Śikhaṇḍin) similarly a man (puruṣa).
ततः प्रसादयामासुर्यक्षा वैश्रवणं किल ।
स्थूणस्यार्थे कुरुष्वान्तं शापस्येति पुनः पुनः ॥४४॥
44. tataḥ prasādayāmāsuryakṣā vaiśravaṇaṁ kila ,
sthūṇasyārthe kuruṣvāntaṁ śāpasyeti punaḥ punaḥ.
44. tataḥ prasādayāmāsuḥ yakṣāḥ vaiśravaṇam kila
sthūṇasya arthe kuruṣva antam śāpasya iti punaḥ punaḥ
44. tataḥ kila yakṣāḥ vaiśravaṇam prasādayāmāsuḥ (te) "sthūṇasya arthe śāpasya antam kuruṣva" iti punaḥ punaḥ (avocan).
44. Then the yakṣas indeed propitiated Vaiśravaṇa again and again, saying, "For Sthūṇā's sake, bring an end to the curse."
ततो महात्मा यक्षेन्द्रः प्रत्युवाचानुगामिनः ।
सर्वान्यक्षगणांस्तात शापस्यान्तचिकीर्षया ॥४५॥
45. tato mahātmā yakṣendraḥ pratyuvācānugāminaḥ ,
sarvānyakṣagaṇāṁstāta śāpasyāntacikīrṣayā.
45. tataḥ mahātmā yakṣendraḥ pratyuvāca anugāminaḥ
sarvān yakṣagaṇān tāta śāpasya antacikīrṣayā
45. tataḥ mahātmā yakṣendraḥ śāpasya antacikīrṣayā sarvān anugāminaḥ yakṣagaṇān tāta (iti) pratyuvāca.
45. Then, the great-souled chief of the yakṣas, desiring to alleviate the curse (śāpa), replied to all his followers, the hosts of yakṣas, (saying,) 'My dear sons...'
हते शिखण्डिनि रणे स्वरूपं प्रतिपत्स्यते ।
स्थूणो यक्षो निरुद्वेगो भवत्विति महामनाः ॥४६॥
46. hate śikhaṇḍini raṇe svarūpaṁ pratipatsyate ,
sthūṇo yakṣo nirudvego bhavatviti mahāmanāḥ.

sthūṇaḥ yakṣaḥ nirudvegaḥ bhavatu iti mahāmanāḥ

46. The great-souled one declared, "When Shikhaṇḍin is killed in battle, Sthūṇa will regain his original form. Let the yakṣa Sthūṇa be free from anxiety."
इत्युक्त्वा भगवान्देवो यक्षराक्षसपूजितः ।
प्रययौ सह तैः सर्वैर्निमेषान्तरचारिभिः ॥४७॥
47. ityuktvā bhagavāndevo yakṣarākṣasapūjitaḥ ,
prayayau saha taiḥ sarvairnimeṣāntaracāribhiḥ.
47. iti uktvā bhagavān devaḥ yakṣarākṣasapūjitaḥ
prayayau saha taiḥ sarvaiḥ nimeṣāntaracāribhiḥ

47. Having spoken thus, the revered deity, who is worshipped by yakṣas and rākṣasas, departed along with all those who move within the twinkling of an eye.
स्थूणस्तु शापं संप्राप्य तत्रैव न्यवसत्तदा ।
समये चागमत्तं वै शिखण्डी स क्षपाचरम् ॥४८॥
48. sthūṇastu śāpaṁ saṁprāpya tatraiva nyavasattadā ,
samaye cāgamattaṁ vai śikhaṇḍī sa kṣapācaram.
48. sthūṇaḥ tu śāpam saṃprāpya tatra eva nyavasat tadā
samaye ca āgamat tam vai śikhaṇḍī saḥ kṣapācaram
48. tu sthūṇaḥ śāpam saṃprāpya tatra eva tadā nyavasat

48. But Sthūṇa, having received the curse, resided there at that time. And at the appointed moment, that Shikhaṇḍin came to him, the night-ranger (yakṣa).
सोऽभिगम्याब्रवीद्वाक्यं प्राप्तोऽस्मि भगवन्निति ।
तमब्रवीत्ततः स्थूणः प्रीतोऽस्मीति पुनः पुनः ॥४९॥
49. so'bhigamyābravīdvākyaṁ prāpto'smi bhagavanniti ,
tamabravīttataḥ sthūṇaḥ prīto'smīti punaḥ punaḥ.
49. saḥ abhigamya abravīt vākyam prāptaḥ asmi bhagavan iti
tam abravīt tataḥ sthūṇaḥ prītaḥ asmi iti punaḥ punaḥ
49. saḥ abhigamya vākyam abravīt iti [yat] bhagavan prāptaḥ asmi
tataḥ sthūṇaḥ tam abravīt punaḥ punaḥ iti [yat] prītaḥ asmi
49. He (Shikhaṇḍin), having approached, spoke the words: "Revered sir, I have arrived." Then Sthūṇa repeatedly said to him, "I am pleased."
आर्जवेनागतं दृष्ट्वा राजपुत्रं शिखण्डिनम् ।
सर्वमेव यथावृत्तमाचचक्षे शिखण्डिने ॥५०॥
50. ārjavenāgataṁ dṛṣṭvā rājaputraṁ śikhaṇḍinam ,
sarvameva yathāvṛttamācacakṣe śikhaṇḍine.
50. ārjavenā āgatam dṛṣṭvā rājaputram śikhaṇḍinam
sarvam eva yathāvṛttam ācacakṣe śikhaṇḍine
50. ārjavenā āgatam rājaputram śikhaṇḍinam dṛṣṭvā,

50. Seeing Prince Śikhaṇḍin approach with candor, he recounted to Śikhaṇḍin everything that had transpired.
यक्ष उवाच ।
शप्तो वैश्रवणेनास्मि त्वत्कृते पार्थिवात्मज ।
गच्छेदानीं यथाकामं चर लोकान्यथासुखम् ॥५१॥
51. yakṣa uvāca ,
śapto vaiśravaṇenāsmi tvatkṛte pārthivātmaja ,
gacchedānīṁ yathākāmaṁ cara lokānyathāsukham.
51. yakṣaḥ uvāca śaptaḥ vaiśravaṇena asmi tvatkṛte pārthivātmaja
gaccha idānīm yathākāmam cara lokān yathāsukham
51. yakṣaḥ uvāca: pārthivātmaja,
tvatkṛte vaiśravaṇena asmi śaptaḥ.

lokān yathāsukham cara.
51. The Yakṣa said, "Son of a king, I have been cursed by Vaiśravaṇa because of you. Now go wherever you desire and roam the worlds as you please."
दिष्टमेतत्पुरा मन्ये न शक्यमतिवर्तितुम् ।
गमनं तव चेतो हि पौलस्त्यस्य च दर्शनम् ॥५२॥
52. diṣṭametatpurā manye na śakyamativartitum ,
gamanaṁ tava ceto hi paulastyasya ca darśanam.
52. diṣṭam etat purā manye na śakyam ativartitum
gamanam tava ca itaḥ hi paulastyasya ca darśanam
52. etat purā diṣṭam manye,
(tat) ativartitum na śakyam.
tava gamanam ca itaḥ hi paulastyasya ca darśanam (diṣṭam).
52. I believe this destiny was determined previously, and it cannot be transgressed. Your departure from this place, indeed, and the sight of Paulastya (Kubera), are both fated.
भीष्म उवाच ।
एवमुक्तः शिखण्डी तु स्थूणयक्षेण भारत ।
प्रत्याजगाम नगरं हर्षेण महतान्वितः ॥५३॥
53. bhīṣma uvāca ,
evamuktaḥ śikhaṇḍī tu sthūṇayakṣeṇa bhārata ,
pratyājagāma nagaraṁ harṣeṇa mahatānvitaḥ.

bhārata prati ājagāma nagaram harṣeṇa mahatā anvitaḥ
53. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca: bhārata,
sthūṇāyakṣeṇa evam uktaḥ śikhaṇḍī tu mahatā harṣeṇa anvitaḥ nagaram prati ājagāma.
53. Bhīṣma said, "O Bhārata, thus addressed by the Sthūṇāyakṣa, Śikhaṇḍin returned to the city filled with great joy."
पूजयामास विविधैर्गन्धमाल्यैर्महाधनैः ।
द्विजातीन्देवताश्चापि चैत्यानथ चतुष्पथान् ॥५४॥
54. pūjayāmāsa vividhairgandhamālyairmahādhanaiḥ ,
dvijātīndevatāścāpi caityānatha catuṣpathān.

54. He honored the Brahmins (dvijātīn), deities (devatāḥ), sacred shrines (caityān), and crossroads with various perfumes, garlands, and great wealth.
द्रुपदः सह पुत्रेण सिद्धार्थेन शिखण्डिना ।
मुदं च परमां लेभे पाञ्चाल्यः सह बान्धवैः ॥५५॥
55. drupadaḥ saha putreṇa siddhārthena śikhaṇḍinā ,
mudaṁ ca paramāṁ lebhe pāñcālyaḥ saha bāndhavaiḥ.

55. Drupada, the king of Pañcāla (pāñcālyaḥ), along with his son Śikhaṇḍin, who had achieved his purpose (siddhārthena), and his relatives, attained supreme joy.
शिष्यार्थं प्रददौ चापि द्रोणाय कुरुपुंगव ।
शिखण्डिनं महाराज पुत्रं स्त्रीपूर्विणं तथा ॥५६॥
56. śiṣyārthaṁ pradadau cāpi droṇāya kurupuṁgava ,
śikhaṇḍinaṁ mahārāja putraṁ strīpūrviṇaṁ tathā.

śikhaṇḍinam mahārāja putram strīpūrviṇam tathā

56. O chief of the Kurus (kurupuṅgava), O great king (mahārāja), he (Drupada) also gave his son Śikhaṇḍin, who was formerly a woman (strīpūrviṇam), to Droṇa as a disciple.
प्रतिपेदे चतुष्पादं धनुर्वेदं नृपात्मजः ।
शिखण्डी सह युष्माभिर्धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पार्षतः ॥५७॥
57. pratipede catuṣpādaṁ dhanurvedaṁ nṛpātmajaḥ ,
śikhaṇḍī saha yuṣmābhirdhṛṣṭadyumnaśca pārṣataḥ.

57. The king's son (nṛpātmajaḥ) mastered the four-fold (catuṣpādam) science of archery (dhanurvedam). Śikhaṇḍin, along with Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the son of Pṛṣata (pārṣataḥ), and yourselves (yuṣmābhiḥ), were also (involved/present).
मम त्वेतच्चरास्तात यथावत्प्रत्यवेदयन् ।
जडान्धबधिराकारा ये युक्ता द्रुपदे मया ॥५८॥
58. mama tvetaccarāstāta yathāvatpratyavedayan ,
jaḍāndhabadhirākārā ye yuktā drupade mayā.

jaḍāndhabadhirākārāḥ ye yuktāḥ drupade mayā

58. However, my spies, dear son, who were stationed by me in Drupada's court, appearing dull, blind, and deaf, reported this matter to me accurately.
एवमेष महाराज स्त्रीपुमान्द्रुपदात्मजः ।
संभूतः कौरवश्रेष्ठ शिखण्डी रथसत्तमः ॥५९॥
59. evameṣa mahārāja strīpumāndrupadātmajaḥ ,
saṁbhūtaḥ kauravaśreṣṭha śikhaṇḍī rathasattamaḥ.
59. evam eṣaḥ mahārāja strīpumān drupadaātmajaḥ
saṃbhūtaḥ kauravaśreṣṭha śikhaṇḍī rathasattamaḥ
59. mahārāja kauravaśreṣṭha evam eṣaḥ drupadātmajaḥ

59. O great king, O best among the Kurus, this son of Drupada, Shikhaṇḍī, who is the best of charioteers, was born in this manner, as a person who was first female and then became male.
ज्येष्ठा काशिपतेः कन्या अम्बा नामेति विश्रुता ।
द्रुपदस्य कुले जाता शिखण्डी भरतर्षभ ॥६०॥
60. jyeṣṭhā kāśipateḥ kanyā ambā nāmeti viśrutā ,
drupadasya kule jātā śikhaṇḍī bharatarṣabha.

60. O best among the Bharatas, the eldest daughter of the king of Kashi, well-known by the name Amba, was born in Drupada's family as Shikhaṇḍī.
नाहमेनं धनुष्पाणिं युयुत्सुं समुपस्थितम् ।
मुहूर्तमपि पश्येयं प्रहरेयं न चाप्युत ॥६१॥
61. nāhamenaṁ dhanuṣpāṇiṁ yuyutsuṁ samupasthitam ,
muhūrtamapi paśyeyaṁ prahareyaṁ na cāpyuta.
61. na aham enam dhanuṣpāṇim yuyutsum samupasthitam
muhūrtam api paśyeyam prahareyam na ca api uta
61. aham enam dhanuṣpāṇim yuyutsum samupasthitam
api muhūrtam na paśyeyam ca uta na prahareyam
61. I would not even look at him for a single moment, him who stands before me with a bow in hand, eager to fight. And indeed, I would not strike him.
व्रतमेतन्मम सदा पृथिव्यामपि विश्रुतम् ।
स्त्रियां स्त्रीपूर्वके चापि स्त्रीनाम्नि स्त्रीस्वरूपिणि ॥६२॥
62. vratametanmama sadā pṛthivyāmapi viśrutam ,
striyāṁ strīpūrvake cāpi strīnāmni strīsvarūpiṇi.
62. vratam etat mama sadā pṛthivyām api viśrutam striyām
strī-pūrvake ca api strī-nāmni strī-svarūpiṇi
62. mama etat vratam sadā pṛthivyām api viśrutam.
striyām strī-pūrvake ca api strī-nāmni strī-svarūpiṇi.
62. This vow of mine, which is always well-known even on earth, applies to a woman, to one who was formerly a woman, and also to one bearing a woman's name or having a woman's form.
न मुञ्चेयमहं बाणानिति कौरवनन्दन ।
न हन्यामहमेतेन कारणेन शिखण्डिनम् ॥६३॥
63. na muñceyamahaṁ bāṇāniti kauravanandana ,
na hanyāmahametena kāraṇena śikhaṇḍinam.
63. na muñceyam aham bāṇān iti kaurava-nandana
na hanyām aham etena kāraṇena śikhaṇḍinam
63. kaurava-nandana,
aham bāṇān na muñceyam iti.
etena kāraṇena aham śikhaṇḍinam na hanyām.
63. O delight of the Kurus (Kauravanandana), I would not release arrows. For this reason, I would not kill Shikhandin.
एतत्तत्त्वमहं वेद जन्म तात शिखण्डिनः ।
ततो नैनं हनिष्यामि समरेष्वाततायिनम् ॥६४॥
64. etattattvamahaṁ veda janma tāta śikhaṇḍinaḥ ,
tato nainaṁ haniṣyāmi samareṣvātatāyinam.
64. etat tattvam aham veda janma tāta śikhaṇḍinaḥ
tataḥ na enam haniṣyāmi samareṣu ātatāyinam
64. tāta,
aham śikhaṇḍinaḥ janma etat tattvam veda.
tataḥ enam ātatāyinam samareṣu na haniṣyāmi.
64. O dear one (tāta), I know this truth (tattva) regarding Shikhandin's birth. Therefore, I will not kill him, even if he is an aggressor in battles.
यदि भीष्मः स्त्रियं हन्याद्धन्यादात्मानमप्युत ।
नैनं तस्माद्धनिष्यामि दृष्ट्वापि समरे स्थितम् ॥६५॥
65. yadi bhīṣmaḥ striyaṁ hanyāddhanyādātmānamapyuta ,
nainaṁ tasmāddhaniṣyāmi dṛṣṭvāpi samare sthitam.
65. yadi bhīṣmaḥ striyam hanyāt hanyāt ātmānam api uta
na enam tasmāt haniṣyāmi dṛṣṭvā api samare sthitam
65. yadi bhīṣmaḥ striyam hanyāt,
hanyāt ātmānam api uta.
tasmāt enam samare sthitam dṛṣṭvā api na haniṣyāmi.
65. If Bhishma were to kill a woman, he would effectively kill his own self (ātman). Therefore, I will not kill him, even seeing him standing in battle.
संजय उवाच ।
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु कौरव्यो राजा दुर्योधनस्तदा ।
मुहूर्तमिव स ध्यात्वा भीष्मे युक्तममन्यत ॥६६॥
66. saṁjaya uvāca ,
etacchrutvā tu kauravyo rājā duryodhanastadā ,
muhūrtamiva sa dhyātvā bhīṣme yuktamamanyata.

66. Sanjaya said: After hearing this, King Duryodhana, the descendant of Kuru, reflected for a moment and deemed it appropriate for Bhishma.
