वैशंपायन उवाच ।
स दृष्ट्वा निहतान्संख्ये पुत्रान्भ्रातॄन्सखींस्तथा ।
महादुःखपरीतात्मा बभूव जनमेजय ॥१॥

sa dṛṣṭvā nihatānsaṁkhye putrānbhrātṝnsakhīṁstathā ,

1. Vaiśampayana said: Janamejaya, upon seeing his sons, brothers, and friends slain in battle, became deeply overwhelmed with great sorrow (ātman).
ततस्तस्य महाञ्शोकः प्रादुरासीन्महात्मनः ।
स्मरतः पुत्रपौत्राणां भ्रातॄणां स्वजनस्य ह ॥२॥
2. tatastasya mahāñśokaḥ prādurāsīnmahātmanaḥ ,
smarataḥ putrapautrāṇāṁ bhrātṝṇāṁ svajanasya ha.

2. Then, a great sorrow arose in that great-souled (ātman) Janamejaya, as he remembered his sons, grandsons, brothers, and his own kin.
तमश्रुपरिपूर्णाक्षं वेपमानमचेतसम् ।
सुहृदो भृशसंविग्नाः सान्त्वयां चक्रिरे तदा ॥३॥
3. tamaśruparipūrṇākṣaṁ vepamānamacetasam ,
suhṛdo bhṛśasaṁvignāḥ sāntvayāṁ cakrire tadā.
3. tam aśruparipūrṇākṣam vepamānam acetasam
suhṛdaḥ bhṛśasaṃvignāḥ sāntvayām cakrire tadā

3. Then, his greatly distressed friends consoled him, who was trembling, senseless, and whose eyes were filled with tears.
ततस्तस्मिन्क्षणे काल्ये रथेनादित्यवर्चसा ।
नकुलः कृष्णया सार्धमुपायात्परमार्तया ॥४॥
4. tatastasminkṣaṇe kālye rathenādityavarcasā ,
nakulaḥ kṛṣṇayā sārdhamupāyātparamārtayā.
4. tataḥ tasmin kṣaṇe kālye rathena ādityavarcasā
nakulaḥ kṛṣṇayā sārdham upāyāt paramārtayā

4. Then, at that opportune moment, Nakula arrived by a chariot gleaming like the sun, accompanied by Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), who was extremely distressed.
उपप्लव्यगता सा तु श्रुत्वा सुमहदप्रियम् ।
तदा विनाशं पुत्राणां सर्वेषां व्यथिताभवत् ॥५॥
5. upaplavyagatā sā tu śrutvā sumahadapriyam ,
tadā vināśaṁ putrāṇāṁ sarveṣāṁ vyathitābhavat.
5. upaplavyagatā sā tu śrutvā sumahat apriyam tadā
vināśam putrāṇām sarveṣām vyathitā abhavat
5. sā tu upaplavyagatā,
tadā sarveṣām putrāṇām vināśam sumahat apriyam śrutvā,

5. But she, while in Upaplavya, upon hearing the very great misfortune of the destruction of all her sons, became greatly distressed.
कम्पमानेव कदली वातेनाभिसमीरिता ।
कृष्णा राजानमासाद्य शोकार्ता न्यपतद्भुवि ॥६॥
6. kampamāneva kadalī vātenābhisamīritā ,
kṛṣṇā rājānamāsādya śokārtā nyapatadbhuvi.
6. kampamānā iva kadalī vātena abhisamīritā
kṛṣṇā rājānam āsādya śoka ārtā nyapatat bhuvi
6. kṛṣṇā śoka ārtā,
vātena abhisamīritā kampamānā kadalī iva,
rājānam āsādya,
bhuvi nyapatat.
6. Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), overwhelmed by grief, approached the king and fell to the ground, like a banana tree swayed intensely by the wind.
बभूव वदनं तस्याः सहसा शोककर्शितम् ।
फुल्लपद्मपलाशाक्ष्यास्तमोध्वस्त इवांशुमान् ॥७॥
7. babhūva vadanaṁ tasyāḥ sahasā śokakarśitam ,
phullapadmapalāśākṣyāstamodhvasta ivāṁśumān.
7. babhūva vadanam tasyāḥ sahasā śokakarśitam
phullapadmapalāśākṣyāḥ tamaḥ dhvastaḥ iva aṃśumān
7. phullapadmapalāśākṣyāḥ tasyāḥ vadanam sahasā śokakarśitam babhūva,
tamaḥ dhvastaḥ aṃśumān iva.
7. Her face, belonging to one with eyes like full-blown lotus petals, suddenly became emaciated by grief, resembling the sun eclipsed by darkness.
ततस्तां पतितां दृष्ट्वा संरम्भी सत्यविक्रमः ।
बाहुभ्यां परिजग्राह समुपेत्य वृकोदरः ॥८॥
8. tatastāṁ patitāṁ dṛṣṭvā saṁrambhī satyavikramaḥ ,
bāhubhyāṁ parijagrāha samupetya vṛkodaraḥ.
8. tataḥ tām patitām dṛṣṭvā saṃrambhī satyavikramaḥ
bāhubhyām parijagrāha samupetya vṛkodaraḥ
8. tataḥ vṛkodaraḥ,
saṃrambhī satyavikramaḥ,
tām patitām dṛṣṭvā,
samupetya,
bāhubhyām parijagrāha.
8. Then Vṛkodara (Bhīma), who was impetuous and truly mighty, having approached her and seen her fallen, embraced her with both arms.
सा समाश्वासिता तेन भीमसेनेन भामिनी ।
रुदती पाण्डवं कृष्णा सहभ्रातरमब्रवीत् ॥९॥
9. sā samāśvāsitā tena bhīmasenena bhāminī ,
rudatī pāṇḍavaṁ kṛṣṇā sahabhrātaramabravīt.
9. sā samāśvāsitā tena bhīmasenena bhāminī
rudatī pāṇḍavaṃ kṛṣṇā sahabhrātaram abravīt

9. Having been comforted by Bhīmasena, the beautiful Draupadī, weeping, spoke to the Pāṇḍava [Yudhiṣṭhira] who was accompanied by his brothers.
दिष्ट्या राजंस्त्वमद्येमामखिलां भोक्ष्यसे महीम् ।
आत्मजान्क्षत्रधर्मेण संप्रदाय यमाय वै ॥१०॥
10. diṣṭyā rājaṁstvamadyemāmakhilāṁ bhokṣyase mahīm ,
ātmajānkṣatradharmeṇa saṁpradāya yamāya vai.
10. diṣṭyā rājan tvam adya imām akhilām bhokṣyase
mahīm ātmajān kṣatradharmeṇa saṃpradāya yamāya vai
10. rājan diṣṭyā tvam adya imām akhilām mahīm bhokṣyase,
ātmajān kṣatradharmeṇa yamāya saṃpradāya vai
10. O King, fortunately, you will today rule this entire earth, having consigned your sons to Yama, the god of death, in accordance with the warrior's code (kṣatra-dharma).
दिष्ट्या त्वं पार्थ कुशली मत्तमातङ्गगामिनम् ।
अवाप्य पृथिवीं कृत्स्नां सौभद्रं न स्मरिष्यसि ॥११॥
11. diṣṭyā tvaṁ pārtha kuśalī mattamātaṅgagāminam ,
avāpya pṛthivīṁ kṛtsnāṁ saubhadraṁ na smariṣyasi.
11. diṣṭyā tvam pārtha kuśalī mattamātaṅgagaminaṃ
avāpya pṛthivīṃ kṛtsnām saubhadraṃ na smariṣyasi
11. pārtha diṣṭyā tvam kuśalī.
kṛtsnām pṛthivīm avāpya,
mattamātaṅgagaminaṃ saubhadram na smariṣyasi
11. Fortunately, O Pārtha (Arjuna), you are well! Having regained the entire earth, you will not remember Saubhadra [Abhimanyu], who walked with the gait of a furious elephant.
आत्मजांस्तेन धर्मेण श्रुत्वा शूरान्निपातितान् ।
उपप्लव्ये मया सार्धं दिष्ट्या त्वं न स्मरिष्यसि ॥१२॥
12. ātmajāṁstena dharmeṇa śrutvā śūrānnipātitān ,
upaplavye mayā sārdhaṁ diṣṭyā tvaṁ na smariṣyasi.
12. ātmajān tena dharmeṇa śrutvā śūrān nipātitān
upaplave mayā sārdhaṃ diṣṭyā tvam na smariṣyasi
12. diṣṭyā tvam,
tena dharmeṇa śūrān nipātitān ātmajān śrutvā,
mayā sārdham upaplave na smariṣyasi
12. Fortunately, after hearing that your brave sons were struck down by that very law (dharma), you will not remember them, though you were with me at Upaplavya.
प्रसुप्तानां वधं श्रुत्वा द्रौणिना पापकर्मणा ।
शोकस्तपति मां पार्थ हुताशन इवाशयम् ॥१३॥
13. prasuptānāṁ vadhaṁ śrutvā drauṇinā pāpakarmaṇā ,
śokastapati māṁ pārtha hutāśana ivāśayam.
13. prasuptānām vadham śrutvā drauṇinā pāpakarmaṇā
śokaḥ tapati mām pārtha hutāśanaḥ iva āśayam
13. pārtha pāpakarmaṇā drauṇinā prasuptānām vadham
śrutvā śokaḥ mām tapati hutāśanaḥ āśayam iva
13. Having heard of the slaughter of my sleeping sons by Drauṇi, that perpetrator of sinful acts, grief consumes me, O Pārtha, just as fire consumes a dwelling.
तस्य पापकृतो द्रौणेर्न चेदद्य त्वया मृधे ।
ह्रियते सानुबन्धस्य युधि विक्रम्य जीवितम् ॥१४॥
14. tasya pāpakṛto drauṇerna cedadya tvayā mṛdhe ,
hriyate sānubandhasya yudhi vikramya jīvitam.
14. tasya pāpakṛtaḥ drauṇeḥ na cet adya tvayā mṛdhe
hriyate sānubandhasya yudhi vikramya jīvitam
14. cet adya tvayā mṛdhe yudhi vikramya tasya
pāpakṛtaḥ sānubandhasya drauṇeḥ jīvitam na hriyate
14. If today, having displayed valor in battle, the life of that sinful Drauṇi, along with his kinsmen, is not taken by you in combat.
इहैव प्रायमासिष्ये तन्निबोधत पाण्डवाः ।
न चेत्फलमवाप्नोति द्रौणिः पापस्य कर्मणः ॥१५॥
15. ihaiva prāyamāsiṣye tannibodhata pāṇḍavāḥ ,
na cetphalamavāpnoti drauṇiḥ pāpasya karmaṇaḥ.
15. iha eva prāyam āsiṣye tat nibodhata pāṇḍavāḥ na
cet phalam avāpnoti drauṇiḥ pāpasya karmaṇaḥ
15. pāṇḍavāḥ iha eva prāyam āsiṣye tat nibodhata
cet drauṇiḥ pāpasya karmaṇaḥ phalam na avāpnoti
15. I will undertake a fast unto death right here. Understand this, O Pāṇḍavas: if Drauṇi does not obtain the consequence of his sinful deed (karma).
एवमुक्त्वा ततः कृष्णा पाण्डवं प्रत्युपाविशत् ।
युधिष्ठिरं याज्ञसेनी धर्मराजं यशस्विनी ॥१६॥
16. evamuktvā tataḥ kṛṣṇā pāṇḍavaṁ pratyupāviśat ,
yudhiṣṭhiraṁ yājñasenī dharmarājaṁ yaśasvinī.
16. evam uktvā tataḥ kṛṣṇā pāṇḍavam prati upāviśat
yudhiṣṭhiram yājñasenī dharmarājam yaśasvinī
16. evam uktvā tataḥ yājñasenī yaśasvinī kṛṣṇā
dharmarājam yudhiṣṭhiram pāṇḍavam prati upāviśat
16. Having spoken thus, Kṛṣṇā, the glorious daughter of Yajñasena (Yājñasenī), then sat down facing the Pāṇḍava, Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of righteousness (dharmarāja).
दृष्ट्वोपविष्टां राजर्षिः पाण्डवो महिषीं प्रियाम् ।
प्रत्युवाच स धर्मात्मा द्रौपदीं चारुदर्शनाम् ॥१७॥
17. dṛṣṭvopaviṣṭāṁ rājarṣiḥ pāṇḍavo mahiṣīṁ priyām ,
pratyuvāca sa dharmātmā draupadīṁ cārudarśanām.
17. dṛṣṭvā upaviṣṭām rājarṣiḥ pāṇḍavaḥ mahiṣīm priyām
pratyuvāca saḥ dharmātmā draupadīm cārudarśanām
17. rājarṣiḥ pāṇḍavaḥ saḥ dharmātmā,
priyām upaviṣṭām cārudarśanām mahiṣīm draupadīm dṛṣṭvā,
pratyuvāca.
17. The royal sage (rājarṣi) and Pāṇḍava, Yudhiṣṭhira, whose soul was devoted to righteousness (dharma), having seen his beloved queen Draupadī, who was seated and beautiful to behold, replied to her.
धर्म्यं धर्मेण धर्मज्ञे प्राप्तास्ते निधनं शुभे ।
पुत्रास्ते भ्रातरश्चैव तान्न शोचितुमर्हसि ॥१८॥
18. dharmyaṁ dharmeṇa dharmajñe prāptāste nidhanaṁ śubhe ,
putrāste bhrātaraścaiva tānna śocitumarhasi.
18. dharmyam dharmeṇa dharmajñe prāptāḥ te nidhanam śubhe
putrāḥ te bhrātaraḥ ca eva tān na śocitum arhasi
18. dharmajñe śubhe,
te putrāḥ ca bhrātaraḥ ca eva dharmeṇa dharmyam nidhanam prāptāḥ.
tān śocitum na arhasi.
18. O knower of righteousness (dharma), O auspicious one, your sons and brothers indeed met a righteous (dharmya) death according to natural law (dharma). You should not grieve for them.
द्रोणपुत्रः स कल्याणि वनं दूरमितो गतः ।
तस्य त्वं पातनं संख्ये कथं ज्ञास्यसि शोभने ॥१९॥
19. droṇaputraḥ sa kalyāṇi vanaṁ dūramito gataḥ ,
tasya tvaṁ pātanaṁ saṁkhye kathaṁ jñāsyasi śobhane.
19. droṇaputraḥ saḥ kalyāṇi vanam dūram itaḥ gataḥ
tasya tvam pātanam saṃkhye katham jñāsyasi śobhane
19. kalyāṇi,
saḥ droṇaputraḥ itaḥ dūram vanam gataḥ.
śobhane,
tvam tasya saṃkhye pātanam katham jñāsyasi?
19. O blessed one (kalyāṇi), that son of Droṇa (Aśvatthāman) has gone far from here into the forest. O beautiful one (śobhane), how will you come to know of his demise in battle?
द्रौपद्युवाच ।
द्रोणपुत्रस्य सहजो मणिः शिरसि मे श्रुतः ।
निहत्य संख्ये तं पापं पश्येयं मणिमाहृतम् ।
राजञ्शिरसि तं कृत्वा जीवेयमिति मे मतिः ॥२०॥
20. draupadyuvāca ,
droṇaputrasya sahajo maṇiḥ śirasi me śrutaḥ ,
nihatya saṁkhye taṁ pāpaṁ paśyeyaṁ maṇimāhṛtam ,
rājañśirasi taṁ kṛtvā jīveyamiti me matiḥ.
20. draupadī uvāca droṇaputrasya sahajaḥ
maṇiḥ śirasi me śrutaḥ nihatya saṃkhye
tam pāpam paśyeyam maṇim āhṛtam rājan
śirasi tam kṛtvā jīveyam iti me matiḥ
20. draupadī uvāca: "me śrutaḥ (yat) droṇaputrasya sahajaḥ maṇiḥ śirasi (asti).
saṃkhye tam pāpam nihatya,
āhṛtam maṇim paśyeyam.
rājan,
tam śirasi kṛtvā jīveyam iti me matiḥ.
"
20. Draupadī replied: "I have heard that the son of Droṇa (Aśvatthāman) has an inherent gem (maṇi) on his head. Having slain that sinner in battle, I wish to see the gem brought here. O King, it is my resolve (mati) that I would live by placing that (gem) on my head."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा पाण्डवं कृष्णा राजानं चारुदर्शना ।
भीमसेनमथाभ्येत्य कुपिता वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥२१॥
21. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ityuktvā pāṇḍavaṁ kṛṣṇā rājānaṁ cārudarśanā ,
bhīmasenamathābhyetya kupitā vākyamabravīt.
21. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca | iti uktvā pāṇḍavam kṛṣṇā rājānam
cārudarśanā | bhīmasenam atha abhyetya kupitā vākyam abravīt
21. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca iti uktvā rājānam pāṇḍavam,
cārudarśanā kṛṣṇā atha bhīmasenam abhyetya,
kupitā vākyam abravīt.
21. Vaiśampāyana said: Having thus spoken to the king, Pāṇḍu's son (Yudhiṣṭhira), Kṛṣṇā, who possessed beautiful eyes, then approached Bhīmasena and, enraged, spoke these words.
त्रातुमर्हसि मां भीम क्षत्रधर्ममनुस्मरन् ।
जहि तं पापकर्माणं शम्बरं मघवानिव ।
न हि ते विक्रमे तुल्यः पुमानस्तीह कश्चन ॥२२॥
22. trātumarhasi māṁ bhīma kṣatradharmamanusmaran ,
jahi taṁ pāpakarmāṇaṁ śambaraṁ maghavāniva ,
na hi te vikrame tulyaḥ pumānastīha kaścana.
22. trātum arhasi mām bhīma kṣatradharmam
anusmaran | jahi tam pāpakarmāṇam
śambaram maghavan iva | na hi te
vikrame tulyaḥ pumān asti iha kaścana
22. bhīma,
kṣatradharmam anusmaran mām trātum arhasi tam pāpakarmāṇam śambaram maghavan iva jahi hi te vikrame iha kaścana pumān tulyaḥ na asti
22. “O Bhīma, remembering your warrior's code (kṣatradharma), you ought to protect me! Slay that evil-doer, Śambara, just as Maghavan (Indra) did. Indeed, there is no man here equal to your valor.”
श्रुतं तत्सर्वलोकेषु परमव्यसने यथा ।
द्वीपोऽभूस्त्वं हि पार्थानां नगरे वारणावते ।
हिडिम्बदर्शने चैव तथा त्वमभवो गतिः ॥२३॥
23. śrutaṁ tatsarvalokeṣu paramavyasane yathā ,
dvīpo'bhūstvaṁ hi pārthānāṁ nagare vāraṇāvate ,
hiḍimbadarśane caiva tathā tvamabhavo gatiḥ.
23. śrutam tat sarvalokeṣu paramavyasane
yathā | dvīpaḥ abhūḥ tvam hi
pārthānām nagare vāraṇāvate | hiḍimbadarśane
ca eva tathā tvam abhavaḥ gatiḥ
23. tat sarvalokeṣu śrutam,
yathā paramavyasane vāraṇāvate nagare tvam hi pārthānām dvīpaḥ abhūḥ ca eva tathā hiḍimbadarśane tvam gatiḥ abhavaḥ.
23. “It is indeed well-known in all worlds how, during that great distress, you became a refuge (dvīpa) for the Pārthas in the city of Vāraṇāvata. And similarly, you became their protector (gati) at the encounter with Hiḍimba.”
तथा विराटनगरे कीचकेन भृशार्दिताम् ।
मामप्युद्धृतवान्कृच्छ्रात्पौलोमीं मघवानिव ॥२४॥
24. tathā virāṭanagare kīcakena bhṛśārditām ,
māmapyuddhṛtavānkṛcchrātpaulomīṁ maghavāniva.
24. tathā virāṭanagare kīcakena bhṛśārditām | mām
api uddhṛtavān kṛcchrāt paulomīm maghavan iva
24. tathā (tvam) virāṭanagare kīcakena bhṛśārditām mām api kṛcchrāt uddhṛtavān,
paulomīm maghavan iva.
24. “Similarly, in the city of Virāṭa, you also rescued me from distress, who was greatly afflicted by Kīcaka, just as Maghavan (Indra) rescued Paulomī.”
यथैतान्यकृथाः पार्थ महाकर्माणि वै पुरा ।
तथा द्रौणिममित्रघ्न विनिहत्य सुखी भव ॥२५॥
25. yathaitānyakṛthāḥ pārtha mahākarmāṇi vai purā ,
tathā drauṇimamitraghna vinihatya sukhī bhava.
25. yathā etāni akṛthāḥ pārtha mahākarmāṇi vai purā
tathā drauṇim amitragnā vinihatya sukhī bhava
25. pārtha amitragnā,
purā vai yathā etāni mahākarmāṇi akṛthāḥ,
tathā drauṇim vinihatya sukhī bhava
25. Just as you, O Pārtha, performed these great deeds in the past, so too, O slayer of foes, having slain Droṇi (Aśvatthāman), be happy.
तस्या बहुविधं दुःखान्निशम्य परिदेवितम् ।
नामर्षयत कौन्तेयो भीमसेनो महाबलः ॥२६॥
26. tasyā bahuvidhaṁ duḥkhānniśamya paridevitam ,
nāmarṣayata kaunteyo bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ.
26. tasyāḥ bahuvidham duḥkhāt niśamya paridevitam
na amarṣayata kaunteyaḥ bhīmasenaḥ mahābalaḥ
26. mahābalaḥ kaunteyaḥ bhīmasenaḥ tasyāḥ duḥkhāt
bahuvidham paridevitam niśamya na amarṣayata
26. Having heard her varied lamentation arising from suffering, Bhīmasena, the mighty son of Kuntī, did not tolerate it.
स काञ्चनविचित्राङ्गमारुरोह महारथम् ।
आदाय रुचिरं चित्रं समार्गणगुणं धनुः ॥२७॥
27. sa kāñcanavicitrāṅgamāruroha mahāratham ,
ādāya ruciraṁ citraṁ samārgaṇaguṇaṁ dhanuḥ.
27. sa kāñcanavicitrāṅgam āruroha mahāratham
ādāya ruciram citram samārgaṇaguṇam dhanuḥ
27. sa kāñcanavicitrāṅgam mahāratham āruroha
ruciram citram samārgaṇaguṇam dhanuḥ ādāya
27. He ascended the great chariot, whose parts were variegated with gold, taking up his beautiful, wondrous bow, equipped with arrows and string.
नकुलं सारथिं कृत्वा द्रोणपुत्रवधे वृतः ।
विस्फार्य सशरं चापं तूर्णमश्वानचोदयत् ॥२८॥
28. nakulaṁ sārathiṁ kṛtvā droṇaputravadhe vṛtaḥ ,
visphārya saśaraṁ cāpaṁ tūrṇamaśvānacodayat.

28. Having made Nakula his charioteer, and being intent on killing Droṇa's son, he swiftly urged the horses after stretching his arrow-equipped bow.
ते हयाः पुरुषव्याघ्र चोदिता वातरंहसः ।
वेगेन त्वरिता जग्मुर्हरयः शीघ्रगामिनः ॥२९॥
29. te hayāḥ puruṣavyāghra coditā vātaraṁhasaḥ ,
vegena tvaritā jagmurharayaḥ śīghragāminaḥ.

29. O tiger among men, those horses, spurred on and swift as the wind, moved quickly, resembling swift-moving lions.
शिबिरात्स्वाद्गृहीत्वा स रथस्य पदमच्युतः ।
द्रोणपुत्ररथस्याशु ययौ मार्गेण वीर्यवान् ॥३०॥
