समुदीर्णं ततो दृष्ट्वा संग्रामं कुरुमुख्ययोः ।
अथाब्रवीदर्जुनस्तु वासुदेवं यशस्विनम् ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
samudīrṇaṁ tato dṛṣṭvā saṁgrāmaṁ kurumukhyayoḥ ,
athābravīdarjunastu vāsudevaṁ yaśasvinam.

1. Sanjaya said: Having then seen the fierce battle between the two foremost Kurus, Arjuna then spoke to the glorious Vāsudeva.
अनयोर्वीरयोर्युद्धे को ज्यायान्भवतो मतः ।
कस्य वा को गुणो भूयानेतद्वद जनार्दन ॥२॥
2. anayorvīrayoryuddhe ko jyāyānbhavato mataḥ ,
kasya vā ko guṇo bhūyānetadvada janārdana.
2. anayoḥ vīrayoḥ yuddhe kaḥ jyāyān bhavataḥ mataḥ
kasya vā kaḥ guṇaḥ bhūyān etat vada janārdana
2. janārdana bhavataḥ mataḥ anayoḥ vīrayoḥ yuddhe kaḥ jyāyān? vā kasya kaḥ guṇaḥ bhūyān? etat vada.
2. Janārdana, who among these two warriors do you consider superior in battle? And whose quality is greater? Please tell me this.
वासुदेव उवाच ।
उपदेशोऽनयोस्तुल्यो भीमस्तु बलवत्तरः ।
कृतयत्नतरस्त्वेष धार्तराष्ट्रो वृकोदरात् ॥३॥
3. vāsudeva uvāca ,
upadeśo'nayostulyo bhīmastu balavattaraḥ ,
kṛtayatnatarastveṣa dhārtarāṣṭro vṛkodarāt.
3. vāsudeva uvāca upadeśaḥ anayoḥ tulyaḥ bhīmaḥ tu
balavattaraḥ kṛtayantataraḥ tu eṣaḥ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ vṛkodarāt
3. vāsudeva uvāca anayoḥ upadeśaḥ tulyaḥ tu bhīmaḥ balavattaraḥ tu eṣaḥ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ vṛkodarāt kṛtayantataraḥ.
3. Vāsudeva said: "The instruction given to these two is equal, but Bhīma is stronger. However, this son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Duryodhana) has made a greater effort than Vṛkodara (Bhīma)."
भीमसेनस्तु धर्मेण युध्यमानो न जेष्यति ।
अन्यायेन तु युध्यन्वै हन्यादेष सुयोधनम् ॥४॥
4. bhīmasenastu dharmeṇa yudhyamāno na jeṣyati ,
anyāyena tu yudhyanvai hanyādeṣa suyodhanam.
4. bhīmasenaḥ tu dharmeṇa yudhyamānaḥ na jeṣyati
anyāyena tu yudhyan vai hanyāt eṣaḥ suyodhanam
4. bhīmasenaḥ tu dharmeṇa yudhyamānaḥ na jeṣyati tu anyāyena yudhyan vai eṣaḥ suyodhanam hanyāt.
4. But Bhīmasena, fighting righteously (by natural law [dharma]), will not win. However, if he fights unjustly, this one (Bhīma) will certainly kill Suyodhana.
मायया निर्जिता देवैरसुरा इति नः श्रुतम् ।
विरोचनश्च शक्रेण मायया निर्जितः सखे ।
मायया चाक्षिपत्तेजो वृत्रस्य बलसूदनः ॥५॥
5. māyayā nirjitā devairasurā iti naḥ śrutam ,
virocanaśca śakreṇa māyayā nirjitaḥ sakhe ,
māyayā cākṣipattejo vṛtrasya balasūdanaḥ.
5. māyayā nirjitāḥ devaiḥ asurāḥ iti
naḥ śrutam virocanaḥ ca śakreṇa
māyayā nirjitaḥ sakhe māyayā ca
ākṣipat tejaḥ vṛtrasya balasūdanaḥ
5. naḥ iti śrutam asurāḥ devaiḥ māyayā
nirjitāḥ ca sakhe virocanaḥ
śakreṇa māyayā nirjitaḥ ca balasūdanaḥ
vṛtrasya tejaḥ māyayā ākṣipat
5. It has been heard by us that the asuras were defeated by the gods through deceptive means (māyā). And, O friend, Virocana was conquered by Śakra also through illusion (māyā). Moreover, the slayer of Bala (Indra) seized Vṛtra's power through trickery (māyā).
प्रतिज्ञातं तु भीमेन द्यूतकाले धनंजय ।
ऊरू भेत्स्यामि ते संख्ये गदयेति सुयोधनम् ॥६॥
6. pratijñātaṁ tu bhīmena dyūtakāle dhanaṁjaya ,
ūrū bhetsyāmi te saṁkhye gadayeti suyodhanam.
6. pratijñātam tu bhīmena dyūtakāle dhanaṃjaya
ūrū bhetsyāmi te saṃkhye gadayā iti suyodhanam
6. dhanaṃjaya bhīmena dyūtakāle suyodhanam te ūrū
gadayā saṃkhye bhetsyāmi iti tu pratijñātam
6. O Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna), Bhīma indeed vowed to Suyodhana at the time of the dice game, saying, "I will break your thighs with my mace in battle."
सोऽयं प्रतिज्ञां तां चापि पारयित्वारिकर्शनः ।
मायाविनं च राजानं माययैव निकृन्ततु ॥७॥
7. so'yaṁ pratijñāṁ tāṁ cāpi pārayitvārikarśanaḥ ,
māyāvinaṁ ca rājānaṁ māyayaiva nikṛntatu.
7. saḥ ayam pratijñām tām ca api pārayitvā arikarśanaḥ
māyāvinam ca rājānam māyayā eva nikṛntatu
7. saḥ ayam arikarśanaḥ tām pratijñām ca api
pārayitvā ca māyāvinam rājānam māyayā eva nikṛntatu
7. May this tormentor of foes, having fulfilled that vow, indeed cut down that deceitful king by means of trickery (māyā) itself.
यद्येष बलमास्थाय न्यायेन प्रहरिष्यति ।
विषमस्थस्ततो राजा भविष्यति युधिष्ठिरः ॥८॥
8. yadyeṣa balamāsthāya nyāyena prahariṣyati ,
viṣamasthastato rājā bhaviṣyati yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
8. yadi eṣaḥ balam āsthāya nyāyena prahariṣyati
viṣamasthaḥ tataḥ rājā bhaviṣyati yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
8. yadi eṣaḥ balam āsthāya nyāyena prahariṣyati
tataḥ rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ viṣamasthaḥ bhaviṣyati
8. If this one (Duryodhana), relying on his strength, were to strike justly, then King Yudhiṣṭhira would be in a difficult position.
पुनरेव च वक्ष्यामि पाण्डवेदं निबोध मे ।
धर्मराजापराधेन भयं नः पुनरागतम् ॥९॥
9. punareva ca vakṣyāmi pāṇḍavedaṁ nibodha me ,
dharmarājāparādhena bhayaṁ naḥ punarāgatam.
9. punar eva ca vakṣyāmi pāṇḍava idam nibodha me
| dharmarāja-aparādhena bhayam naḥ punar āgatam
9. pāṇḍava me punar eva ca idam vakṣyāmi,
nibodha.
dharmarāja-aparādhena naḥ bhayam punar āgatam
9. O Pāṇḍava, I will speak again; please understand this from me. Due to the transgression committed by the king who upholds natural law (dharma-rāja), fear has again come upon us.
कृत्वा हि सुमहत्कर्म हत्वा भीष्ममुखान्कुरून् ।
जयः प्राप्तो यशश्चाग्र्यं वैरं च प्रतियातितम् ।
तदेवं विजयः प्राप्तः पुनः संशयितः कृतः ॥१०॥
10. kṛtvā hi sumahatkarma hatvā bhīṣmamukhānkurūn ,
jayaḥ prāpto yaśaścāgryaṁ vairaṁ ca pratiyātitam ,
tadevaṁ vijayaḥ prāptaḥ punaḥ saṁśayitaḥ kṛtaḥ.
10. kṛtvā hi su-mahat karma hatvā bhīṣma-mukhān
kurūn | jayaḥ prāptaḥ yaśaḥ ca
agryam vairam ca pratiyātitam | tat evam
vijayaḥ prāptaḥ punar saṃśayitaḥ kṛtaḥ
10. hi su-mahat karma kṛtvā,
bhīṣma-mukhān kurūn hatvā,
jayaḥ prāptaḥ,
ca agryam yaśaḥ (prāptam),
ca vairam pratiyātitam.
tat evam (api) prāptaḥ vijayaḥ punaḥ saṃśayitaḥ kṛtaḥ.
10. Indeed, after accomplishing a truly great feat and slaying the prominent Kurus led by Bhīṣma, victory was attained, along with supreme glory, and the enmity was avenged. However, this very victory, thus achieved, has once again been made doubtful.
अबुद्धिरेषा महती धर्मराजस्य पाण्डव ।
यदेकविजये युद्धं पणितं कृतमीदृशम् ।
सुयोधनः कृती वीर एकायनगतस्तथा ॥११॥
11. abuddhireṣā mahatī dharmarājasya pāṇḍava ,
yadekavijaye yuddhaṁ paṇitaṁ kṛtamīdṛśam ,
suyodhanaḥ kṛtī vīra ekāyanagatastathā.
11. a-buddhiḥ eṣā mahatī dharmarājasya
pāṇḍava | yat eka-vijaye yuddham
paṇitam kṛtam īdṛśam | suyodhanaḥ
kṛtī vīraḥ eka-ayana-gataḥ tathā
11. pāṇḍava,
dharmarājasya eṣā mahatī a-buddhiḥ,
yat eka-vijaye yuddham īdṛśam paṇitam kṛtam.
tathā suyodhanaḥ kṛtī vīraḥ eka-ayana-gataḥ.
11. O Pāṇḍava, this is a grave lack of judgment on the part of the king who upholds natural law (dharma-rāja), that the war was wagered in such a way for just one victory. Furthermore, Suyodhana, that accomplished and brave warrior, has become utterly resolute (ekāyanagata).
अपि चोशनसा गीतः श्रूयतेऽयं पुरातनः ।
श्लोकस्तत्त्वार्थसहितस्तन्मे निगदतः शृणु ॥१२॥
12. api cośanasā gītaḥ śrūyate'yaṁ purātanaḥ ,
ślokastattvārthasahitastanme nigadataḥ śṛṇu.
12. api ca uśanasā gītaḥ śrūyate ayam purātanaḥ |
ślokaḥ tattvārtha-sahitaḥ tat me nigadataḥ śṛṇu
12. api ca,
uśanasā gītaḥ,
ayam purātanaḥ tattvārtha-sahitaḥ ślokaḥ śrūyate.
tat me nigadataḥ (tvam) śṛṇu.
12. Moreover, this ancient verse, imbued with profound meaning, sung by Uśanas (Śukrācārya), is heard. Therefore, listen as I recite it to you.
पुनरावर्तमानानां भग्नानां जीवितैषिणाम् ।
भेतव्यमरिशेषाणामेकायनगता हि ते ॥१३॥
13. punarāvartamānānāṁ bhagnānāṁ jīvitaiṣiṇām ,
bhetavyamariśeṣāṇāmekāyanagatā hi te.
13. punarāvārtamānānām bhagnānām jīvitaīṣiṇām
bhetavyam ariśeṣāṇām ekāyanagatā hi te
13. te hi punarāvārtamānānām bhagnānām
jīvitaīṣiṇām ariśeṣāṇām ekāyanagatā bhetavyam
13. Indeed, those who are returning, defeated, desirous of life, and who are the remaining enemies, should be feared, for they have now committed to a single, resolute path.
सुयोधनमिमं भग्नं हतसैन्यं ह्रदं गतम् ।
पराजितं वनप्रेप्सुं निराशं राज्यलम्भने ॥१४॥
14. suyodhanamimaṁ bhagnaṁ hatasainyaṁ hradaṁ gatam ,
parājitaṁ vanaprepsuṁ nirāśaṁ rājyalambhane.
14. suyodhanam imam bhagnam hatasainyam hradam gatam
parājitam vanaprepsum nirāśam rājyalambhane
14. imam suyodhanam bhagnam hatasainyam hradam gatam
parājitam vanaprepsum rājyalambhane nirāśam
14. This Suyodhana - defeated, with his army destroyed, having retreated to the lake, utterly vanquished, now desiring to escape to the forest, and without any hope of regaining the kingdom -
को न्वेष संयुगे प्राज्ञः पुनर्द्वंद्वे समाह्वयेत् ।
अपि वो निर्जितं राज्यं न हरेत सुयोधनः ॥१५॥
15. ko nveṣa saṁyuge prājñaḥ punardvaṁdve samāhvayet ,
api vo nirjitaṁ rājyaṁ na hareta suyodhanaḥ.
15. kaḥ nu eṣa saṃyuge prājñaḥ punar dvandve samāhvayet
api vaḥ nirjitam rājyam na hareta suyodhanaḥ
15. nu prājñaḥ kaḥ eṣa saṃyuge punar dvandve samāhvayet
api vaḥ nirjitam rājyam suyodhanaḥ na hareta
15. Which wise person would indeed challenge this man to another duel in battle? Or would Suyodhana not seize the kingdom already won by you all?
यस्त्रयोदशवर्षाणि गदया कृतनिश्रमः ।
चरत्यूर्ध्वं च तिर्यक्च भीमसेनजिघांसया ॥१६॥
16. yastrayodaśavarṣāṇi gadayā kṛtaniśramaḥ ,
caratyūrdhvaṁ ca tiryakca bhīmasenajighāṁsayā.
16. yaḥ trayodaśavarṣāṇi gadayā kṛtaniśramaḥ carati
ūrdhvam ca tiryak ca bhīmasenajighāṃsayā
16. yaḥ trayodaśavarṣāṇi gadayā kṛtaniśramaḥ
bhīmasenajighāṃsayā ūrdhvam ca tiryak ca carati
16. He (Duryodhana) who, for thirteen years, has assiduously trained (kṛtaniśramaḥ) with his mace, moving it both upwards and sideways, all driven by the desire to kill Bhimasena.
एवं चेन्न महाबाहुरन्यायेन हनिष्यति ।
एष वः कौरवो राजा धार्तराष्ट्रो भविष्यति ॥१७॥
17. evaṁ cenna mahābāhuranyāyena haniṣyati ,
eṣa vaḥ kauravo rājā dhārtarāṣṭro bhaviṣyati.
17. evam cet na mahābāhuḥ anyāyena haniṣyati eṣaḥ
vaḥ kauravaḥ rājā dhārtarāṣṭraḥ bhaviṣyati
17. evam cet mahābāhuḥ na haniṣyati,
anyāyena eṣaḥ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ vaḥ kauravaḥ rājā bhaviṣyati
17. If the mighty-armed one (Bhīma) does not kill (Duryodhana), then, by injustice, this son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra will become your Kaurava king.
धनंजयस्तु श्रुत्वैतत्केशवस्य महात्मनः ।
प्रेक्षतो भीमसेनस्य हस्तेनोरुमताडयत् ॥१८॥
18. dhanaṁjayastu śrutvaitatkeśavasya mahātmanaḥ ,
prekṣato bhīmasenasya hastenorumatāḍayat.
18. dhanaṃjayaḥ tu śrutvā etat keśavasya mahātmanaḥ
prekṣataḥ bhīmasenasya hastena ūrum atāḍayat
18. dhanaṃjayaḥ tu mahātmanaḥ keśavasya etat śrutvā,
bhīmasenasya prekṣataḥ hastena ūrum atāḍayat
18. But Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), having heard this from the great-souled (mahātman) Keśava (Kṛṣṇa), and with Bhīmasena watching, struck his own thigh with his hand.
गृह्य संज्ञां ततो भीमो गदया व्यचरद्रणे ।
मण्डलानि विचित्राणि यमकानीतराणि च ॥१९॥
19. gṛhya saṁjñāṁ tato bhīmo gadayā vyacaradraṇe ,
maṇḍalāni vicitrāṇi yamakānītarāṇi ca.
19. gṛhya saṃjñām tataḥ bhīmaḥ gadayā vyacarat
raṇe maṇḍalāni vicitrāṇi yamakāni itarāṇi ca
19. tataḥ bhīmaḥ saṃjñām gṛhya,
raṇe gadayā vicitrāṇi yamakāni ca itarāṇi maṇḍalāni vyacarat
19. Having received the signal, Bhīma then moved about in battle with his mace, performing various intricate circular maneuvers, both paired (yamaka) and other kinds.
दक्षिणं मण्डलं सव्यं गोमूत्रकमथापि च ।
व्यचरत्पाण्डवो राजन्नरिं संमोहयन्निव ॥२०॥
20. dakṣiṇaṁ maṇḍalaṁ savyaṁ gomūtrakamathāpi ca ,
vyacaratpāṇḍavo rājannariṁ saṁmohayanniva.
20. dakṣiṇam maṇḍalam savyam gomūtrakam atha api
ca vyacarat pāṇḍavaḥ rājan arim saṃmohayat iva
20. rājan pāṇḍavaḥ dakṣiṇam maṇḍalam savyam gomūtrakam
atha api ca arim saṃmohayat iva vyacarat
20. O king, the Pāṇḍava (Bhīma) performed right and left circular movements, and also the 'cow's urine' (gomūtraka) maneuver, as if bewildering the enemy.
तथैव तव पुत्रोऽपि गदामार्गविशारदः ।
व्यचरल्लघु चित्रं च भीमसेनजिघांसया ॥२१॥
21. tathaiva tava putro'pi gadāmārgaviśāradaḥ ,
vyacarallaghu citraṁ ca bhīmasenajighāṁsayā.
21. tathā eva tava putraḥ api gadāmārgaviśāradaḥ
vyacarat laghu citram ca bhīmasenajighāṃsayā
21. tava putraḥ gadāmārgaviśāradaḥ api tathā eva
bhīmasenajighāṃsayā laghu citram ca vyacarat
21. Similarly, your son, an expert in mace-fighting, also moved swiftly and wonderfully with the intent to kill Bhīmasena.
आधुन्वन्तौ गदे घोरे चन्दनागरुरूषिते ।
वैरस्यान्तं परीप्सन्तौ रणे क्रुद्धाविवान्तकौ ॥२२॥
22. ādhunvantau gade ghore candanāgarurūṣite ,
vairasyāntaṁ parīpsantau raṇe kruddhāvivāntakau.

antam parīpsantau raṇe kruddhāu iva antakau
22. ghore candanāgarurūṣite gade ādhunvantau vairasya

22. Brandishing two terrible maces, which were smeared with sandalwood and aloe wood, the two (warriors) sought to bring an end to the hostility in battle, like two enraged Yamas (gods of death).
अन्योन्यं तौ जिघांसन्तौ प्रवीरौ पुरुषर्षभौ ।
युयुधाते गरुत्मन्तौ यथा नागामिषैषिणौ ॥२३॥
23. anyonyaṁ tau jighāṁsantau pravīrau puruṣarṣabhau ,
yuyudhāte garutmantau yathā nāgāmiṣaiṣiṇau.
23. anyonyam tau jighāṃsantau pravīrau puruṣaṛṣabhau
yuyudhāte garutmantau yathā nāgāmiṣaiṣiṇau
23. anyonyam jighāṃsantau tau pravīrau puruṣaṛṣabhau
nāgāmiṣaiṣiṇau garutmantau yathā yuyudhāte
23. Wishing to kill each other, those two great heroes, who were like bulls among men (puruṣa), fought just like two winged Garuḍas desiring the flesh of serpents.
मण्डलानि विचित्राणि चरतोर्नृपभीमयोः ।
गदासंपातजास्तत्र प्रजज्ञुः पावकार्चिषः ॥२४॥
24. maṇḍalāni vicitrāṇi caratornṛpabhīmayoḥ ,
gadāsaṁpātajāstatra prajajñuḥ pāvakārciṣaḥ.
24. maṇḍalāni vicitrāṇi caratoḥ nṛpabhīmayoḥ
gadāsaṃpātajāḥ tatra prajajñuḥ pāvakārciṣaḥ
24. nṛpabhīmayoḥ vicitrāṇi maṇḍalāni caratoḥ
tatra gadāsaṃpātajāḥ pāvakārciṣaḥ prajajñuḥ
24. While the king (Duryodhana) and Bhima were moving in varied, intricate circles, sparks of fire were then produced there from the impact of their maces.
समं प्रहरतोस्तत्र शूरयोर्बलिनोर्मृधे ।
क्षुब्धयोर्वायुना राजन्द्वयोरिव समुद्रयोः ॥२५॥
25. samaṁ praharatostatra śūrayorbalinormṛdhe ,
kṣubdhayorvāyunā rājandvayoriva samudrayoḥ.
25. samam praharatoḥ tatra śūrayoḥ balinoḥ mṛdhe
kṣubdhayoḥ vāyunā rājan dvayoḥ iva samudrayoḥ
25. rājan tatra mṛdhe samam praharatoḥ balinoḥ
śūrayoḥ vāyunā kṣubdhayoḥ dvayoḥ samudrayoḥ iva
25. O King, there, in that battle, the two mighty heroes struck equally, just like two oceans agitated by the wind.
तयोः प्रहरतोस्तुल्यं मत्तकुञ्जरयोरिव ।
गदानिर्घातसंह्रादः प्रहाराणामजायत ॥२६॥
26. tayoḥ praharatostulyaṁ mattakuñjarayoriva ,
gadānirghātasaṁhrādaḥ prahārāṇāmajāyata.
26. tayoḥ praharatoḥ tulyam mattakuñjarayoḥ iva
gadānirghātasaṃhrādaḥ prahārāṇām ajāyata
26. tayoḥ mattakuñjarayoḥ iva tulyam praharatoḥ
prahārāṇām gadānirghātasaṃhrādaḥ ajāyata
26. As those two struck, just like two rutting elephants, a tremendous clamor arose from the clash of their maces.
तस्मिंस्तदा संप्रहारे दारुणे संकुले भृशम् ।
उभावपि परिश्रान्तौ युध्यमानावरिंदमौ ॥२७॥
27. tasmiṁstadā saṁprahāre dāruṇe saṁkule bhṛśam ,
ubhāvapi pariśrāntau yudhyamānāvariṁdamau.
27. tasmin tadā samprahāre dāruṇe saṃkule bhṛśam
ubhau api pariśrāntau yudhyamānau arindamau
27. tadā tasmin dāruṇe bhṛśam saṃkule samprahāre
yudhyamānau arindamau ubhau api pariśrāntau
27. Then, in that fierce and greatly tumultuous combat, both subduers of enemies became utterly exhausted while fighting.
तौ मुहूर्तं समाश्वस्य पुनरेव परंतपौ ।
अभ्यहारयतां क्रुद्धौ प्रगृह्य महती गदे ॥२८॥
28. tau muhūrtaṁ samāśvasya punareva paraṁtapau ,
abhyahārayatāṁ kruddhau pragṛhya mahatī gade.
28. tau muhūrtam samāśvasya punar eva parantapau
abhyahārayatām kruddhau pragṛhya mahatī gade
28. tau parantapau muhūrtam samāśvasya punar eva
kruddhau mahatī gade pragṛhya abhyahārayatām
28. Those two tormentors of enemies, after resting for a moment, then again, enraged, seized their mighty maces and resumed striking.
तयोः समभवद्युद्धं घोररूपमसंवृतम् ।
गदानिपातै राजेन्द्र तक्षतोर्वै परस्परम् ॥२९॥
29. tayoḥ samabhavadyuddhaṁ ghorarūpamasaṁvṛtam ,
gadānipātai rājendra takṣatorvai parasparam.
29. tayoḥ samabhavat yuddham ghorarūpam asaṃvṛtam
gadānipātaiḥ rājendra takṣatoḥ vai parasparam
29. rājendra tayoḥ ghorarūpam asaṃvṛtam yuddham samabhavat vai,
gadānipātaiḥ parasparam takṣatoḥ.
29. O best of kings, an intensely fierce and unrestrained battle (yuddha) occurred between the two of them, as they struck each other with their mace-blows.
व्यायामप्रद्रुतौ तौ तु वृषभाक्षौ तरस्विनौ ।
अन्योन्यं जघ्नतुर्वीरौ पङ्कस्थौ महिषाविव ॥३०॥
30. vyāyāmapradrutau tau tu vṛṣabhākṣau tarasvinau ,
anyonyaṁ jaghnaturvīrau paṅkasthau mahiṣāviva.

anyonyam jaghṇatuḥ vīrau paṅkasthau mahiṣau iva

30. Those two brave heroes, mighty and bull-eyed, drenched with sweat from their strenuous exertion, indeed struck each other like two buffaloes (mahiṣa) standing in mud.
जर्जरीकृतसर्वाङ्गौ रुधिरेणाभिसंप्लुतौ ।
ददृशाते हिमवति पुष्पिताविव किंशुकौ ॥३१॥
31. jarjarīkṛtasarvāṅgau rudhireṇābhisaṁplutau ,
dadṛśāte himavati puṣpitāviva kiṁśukau.
31. jarjarīkṛtasarvāṅgau rudhireṇa abhisaṃplutau
dadṛśāte himavati puṣpitau iva kiṃśukau
31. jarjarīkṛtasarvāṅgau rudhireṇa abhisaṃplutau,

31. With all their limbs mangled and drenched with blood, they appeared like two palash trees (kiṃśuka) blooming on Mount Himalaya.
दुर्योधनेन पार्थस्तु विवरे संप्रदर्शिते ।
ईषदुत्स्मयमानस्तु सहसा प्रससार ह ॥३२॥
32. duryodhanena pārthastu vivare saṁpradarśite ,
īṣadutsmayamānastu sahasā prasasāra ha.

32. But when a vulnerability (vivara) was revealed by Duryodhana, Arjuna (Pārtha) smiled slightly and suddenly rushed forward.
तमभ्याशगतं प्राज्ञो रणे प्रेक्ष्य वृकोदरः ।
अवाक्षिपद्गदां तस्मै वेगेन महता बली ॥३३॥
33. tamabhyāśagataṁ prājño raṇe prekṣya vṛkodaraḥ ,
avākṣipadgadāṁ tasmai vegena mahatā balī.
33. tam abhyāśagatam prājñaḥ raṇe prekṣya vṛkodaraḥ
avākṣipat gadām tasmai vegena mahatā balī
33. raṇe abhyāśagatam tam prekṣya,
prājñaḥ balī vṛkodaraḥ mahatā vegena gadām tasmai avākṣipat.
33. Observing him (Duryodhana) approaching in battle, the sagacious Vrikodara (Bhīma), who was mighty, hurled his mace at him with great force.
अवक्षेपं तु तं दृष्ट्वा पुत्रस्तव विशां पते ।
अपासर्पत्ततः स्थानात्सा मोघा न्यपतद्भुवि ॥३४॥
34. avakṣepaṁ tu taṁ dṛṣṭvā putrastava viśāṁ pate ,
apāsarpattataḥ sthānātsā moghā nyapatadbhuvi.
34. avakṣepam tu tam dṛṣṭvā putraḥ tava viśām pate
apāsarpat tataḥ sthānāt sā moghā nyapatat bhuvi
34. tu,
viśām pate,
tam avakṣepam dṛṣṭvā,
tava putraḥ tataḥ sthānāt apāsarpat; sā moghā bhuvi nyapatat.
34. But, O lord of people, upon seeing that hurled mace, your son (Duryodhana) moved away from that spot. Thus, it (the mace) fell uselessly to the ground.
मोक्षयित्वा प्रहारं तं सुतस्तव स संभ्रमात् ।
भीमसेनं च गदया प्राहरत्कुरुसत्तमः ॥३५॥
35. mokṣayitvā prahāraṁ taṁ sutastava sa saṁbhramāt ,
bhīmasenaṁ ca gadayā prāharatkurusattamaḥ.
35. mokṣayitvā prahāram tam sutaḥ tava sa saṃbhramāt
bhīmasenam ca gadayā prāharat kurusattamaḥ
35. tava sutaḥ,
sa kurusattamaḥ,
tam prahāram mokṣayitvā,

35. Your son (Duryodhana), having avoided that blow, and agitated, that best of Kurus (Duryodhana) then struck Bhīmasena with his mace.
तस्य विष्यन्दमानेन रुधिरेणामितौजसः ।
प्रहारगुरुपाताच्च मूर्छेव समजायत ॥३६॥
36. tasya viṣyandamānena rudhireṇāmitaujasaḥ ,
prahāragurupātācca mūrcheva samajāyata.

36. Due to the gushing blood from that one of immense energy (Bhīma), and from the heavy impact of the blow, it was as if a swoon overcame him.
दुर्योधनस्तं च वेद पीडितं पाण्डवं रणे ।
धारयामास भीमोऽपि शरीरमतिपीडितम् ॥३७॥
37. duryodhanastaṁ ca veda pīḍitaṁ pāṇḍavaṁ raṇe ,
dhārayāmāsa bhīmo'pi śarīramatipīḍitam.
37. duryodhanaḥ tam ca veda pīḍitam pāṇḍavam raṇe

37. Duryodhana also knew that the Pāṇḍava (Bhīma) was suffering greatly in battle. Bhīma, though exceedingly pained himself, maintained control of his body.
अमन्यत स्थितं ह्येनं प्रहरिष्यन्तमाहवे ।
अतो न प्राहरत्तस्मै पुनरेव तवात्मजः ॥३८॥
38. amanyata sthitaṁ hyenaṁ prahariṣyantamāhave ,
ato na prāharattasmai punareva tavātmajaḥ.
38. amanyata sthitam hi enam prahariṣyantam āhave |
ataḥ na prāharat tasmai punaḥ eva tava ātmajaḥ
38. tava ātmajaḥ enam āhave sthitam prahariṣyantam hi amanyata.

38. Indeed, your son (Duryodhana) considered him (Bhīma) to be standing firm and about to strike in battle. Therefore, your son did not strike him again.
ततो मुहूर्तमाश्वस्य दुर्योधनमवस्थितम् ।
वेगेनाभ्यद्रवद्राजन्भीमसेनः प्रतापवान् ॥३९॥
39. tato muhūrtamāśvasya duryodhanamavasthitam ,
vegenābhyadravadrājanbhīmasenaḥ pratāpavān.
39. tataḥ muhūrtam āśvasya duryodhanam avasthitam |
vegena abhyadravat rājan bhīmasenaḥ pratāpavān
39. rājan tataḥ pratāpavān bhīmasenaḥ muhūrtam āśvasya avasthitam duryodhanam vegena abhyadravat.
39. Then, O King, the powerful Bhīmasena, having recovered for a moment, swiftly attacked Duryodhana, who was standing firm.
तमापतन्तं संप्रेक्ष्य संरब्धममितौजसम् ।
मोघमस्य प्रहारं तं चिकीर्षुर्भरतर्षभ ॥४०॥
40. tamāpatantaṁ saṁprekṣya saṁrabdhamamitaujasam ,
moghamasya prahāraṁ taṁ cikīrṣurbharatarṣabha.
40. tam āpatantam samprekṣya saṃrabdham amitaujasam
| mogham asya prahāram tam cikīrṣuḥ bharatarṣabha
40. bharatarṣabha,
saṃrabdham amitaujasam tam āpatantam samprekṣya,

40. O best of the Bhāratas, seeing him (Bhīmasena) approaching, enraged and of immeasurable might, Duryodhana desired to render his (Bhīma's) strike futile.
अवस्थाने मतिं कृत्वा पुत्रस्तव महामनाः ।
इयेषोत्पतितुं राजंश्छलयिष्यन्वृकोदरम् ॥४१॥
41. avasthāne matiṁ kṛtvā putrastava mahāmanāḥ ,
iyeṣotpatituṁ rājaṁśchalayiṣyanvṛkodaram.
41. avasthāne matim kṛtvā putraḥ tava mahāmanāḥ
iyeṣa utpatitum rājan chalayiṣyan vṛkodaram
41. rājan tava mahāmanāḥ putraḥ avasthāne matim kṛtvā,

41. O king, your determined son, having resolved to hold his ground, wished to leap up, intending to deceive Bhima (vṛkodara).
अबुध्यद्भीमसेनस्तद्राज्ञस्तस्य चिकीर्षितम् ।
अथास्य समभिद्रुत्य समुत्क्रम्य च सिंहवत् ॥४२॥
42. abudhyadbhīmasenastadrājñastasya cikīrṣitam ,
athāsya samabhidrutya samutkramya ca siṁhavat.

42. Bhimasena (bhīmasena) understood that king's (Duryodhana's) intention. Thereupon, rushing towards him and leaping up like a lion, (he acted).
सृत्या वञ्चयतो राजन्पुनरेवोत्पतिष्यतः ।
ऊरुभ्यां प्राहिणोद्राजन्गदां वेगेन पाण्डवः ॥४३॥
43. sṛtyā vañcayato rājanpunarevotpatiṣyataḥ ,
ūrubhyāṁ prāhiṇodrājangadāṁ vegena pāṇḍavaḥ.

43. O king, at him (Duryodhana) who was deceiving with a feigned movement and was about to leap up again, the Pāṇḍava (Bhima) hurled his mace (gadā) forcefully towards his thighs.
सा वज्रनिष्पेषसमा प्रहिता भीमकर्मणा ।
ऊरू दुर्योधनस्याथ बभञ्ज प्रियदर्शनौ ॥४४॥
44. sā vajraniṣpeṣasamā prahitā bhīmakarmaṇā ,
ūrū duryodhanasyātha babhañja priyadarśanau.

44. That mace (gadā), hurled by Bhima (bhīmakarman) whose deeds were terrible, and which was like the impact of a thunderbolt, then shattered Duryodhana's two beautiful thighs.
स पपात नरव्याघ्रो वसुधामनुनादयन् ।
भग्नोरुर्भीमसेनेन पुत्रस्तव महीपते ॥४५॥
45. sa papāta naravyāghro vasudhāmanunādayan ,
bhagnorurbhīmasenena putrastava mahīpate.

45. That tiger among men (naravyāghra), your son, O King, fell, making the earth resound, his thighs broken by Bhimasena.
ववुर्वाताः सनिर्घाताः पांसुवर्षं पपात च ।
चचाल पृथिवी चापि सवृक्षक्षुपपर्वता ॥४६॥
46. vavurvātāḥ sanirghātāḥ pāṁsuvarṣaṁ papāta ca ,
cacāla pṛthivī cāpi savṛkṣakṣupaparvatā.
46. vavuḥ vātāḥ sanirghātāḥ pāṃsuvarṣam papāta
ca cacāla pṛthivī ca api savṛkṣakṣupaparvatā

46. Winds blew accompanied by thunder, and a shower of dust fell. Also, the earth trembled, along with its trees, shrubs, and mountains.
तस्मिन्निपतिते वीरे पत्यौ सर्वमहीक्षिताम् ।
महास्वना पुनर्दीप्ता सनिर्घाता भयंकरी ।
पपात चोल्का महती पतिते पृथिवीपतौ ॥४७॥
47. tasminnipatite vīre patyau sarvamahīkṣitām ,
mahāsvanā punardīptā sanirghātā bhayaṁkarī ,
papāta colkā mahatī patite pṛthivīpatau.

sarvamahīkṣitām mahāsvanā punaḥ dīptā
sanirghātā bhayaṃkarī papāta ca

47. When that hero, the lord of all sovereigns, fell, a meteor (ulkā) - great-sounding, re-blazing, thunderous, and terrifying - fell. Indeed, a great meteor (ulkā) also fell at the demise of the ruler of the earth.
तथा शोणितवर्षं च पांसुवर्षं च भारत ।
ववर्ष मघवांस्तत्र तव पुत्रे निपातिते ॥४८॥
48. tathā śoṇitavarṣaṁ ca pāṁsuvarṣaṁ ca bhārata ,
vavarṣa maghavāṁstatra tava putre nipātite.

48. bhārata,

48. Thus, O Bhārata, when your son was struck down there, Maghavan (Indra) rained down both showers of blood and showers of dust.
यक्षाणां राक्षसानां च पिशाचानां तथैव च ।
अन्तरिक्षे महानादः श्रूयते भरतर्षभ ॥४९॥
49. yakṣāṇāṁ rākṣasānāṁ ca piśācānāṁ tathaiva ca ,
antarikṣe mahānādaḥ śrūyate bharatarṣabha.
49. yakṣāṇām rākṣasānām ca piśācānām tathā eva
ca antarikṣe mahānādaḥ śrūyate bharatarṣabha
49. bharatarṣabha yakṣāṇām rākṣasānām ca piśācānām

49. O best among the Bharatas, a mighty roar is heard in the sky, from the Yakshas, Rakshasas, and Pishachas alike.
तेन शब्देन घोरेण मृगाणामथ पक्षिणाम् ।
जज्ञे घोरतमः शब्दो बहूनां सर्वतोदिशम् ॥५०॥
50. tena śabdena ghoreṇa mṛgāṇāmatha pakṣiṇām ,
jajñe ghoratamaḥ śabdo bahūnāṁ sarvatodiśam.
50. tena śabdena ghoreṇa mṛgāṇām atha pakṣiṇām
jajñe ghoratamaḥ śabdaḥ bahūnām sarvatodiśam

50. From that dreadful noise, an even more terrifying sound arose from numerous deer and birds in all directions.
ये तत्र वाजिनः शेषा गजाश्च मनुजैः सह ।
मुमुचुस्ते महानादं तव पुत्रे निपातिते ॥५१॥
51. ye tatra vājinaḥ śeṣā gajāśca manujaiḥ saha ,
mumucuste mahānādaṁ tava putre nipātite.

mumucuḥ te mahānādam tava putre nipātite
51. tava putre nipātite tatra ye śeṣāḥ vājinaḥ

51. When your son was struck down, the remaining horses and elephants, along with the men present there, all let out a mighty roar.
भेरीशङ्खमृदङ्गानामभवच्च स्वनो महान् ।
अन्तर्भूमिगतश्चैव तव पुत्रे निपातिते ॥५२॥
52. bherīśaṅkhamṛdaṅgānāmabhavacca svano mahān ,
antarbhūmigataścaiva tava putre nipātite.
52. bherīśaṅkhamṛdaṅgānām abhavat ca svanaḥ mahān
antaḥ bhūmigataḥ ca eva tava putre nipātite
52. tava putre nipātite bherīśaṅkhamṛdaṅgānām ca

52. And a great sound from the kettledrums, conches, and mridangas arose, which truly penetrated deep into the earth, when your son was struck down.
बहुपादैर्बहुभुजैः कबन्धैर्घोरदर्शनैः ।
नृत्यद्भिर्भयदैर्व्याप्ता दिशस्तत्राभवन्नृप ॥५३॥
53. bahupādairbahubhujaiḥ kabandhairghoradarśanaiḥ ,
nṛtyadbhirbhayadairvyāptā diśastatrābhavannṛpa.
53. bahupādaiḥ bahubhujaiḥ kabandhaiḥ ghoradarśanaiḥ
nṛtyadbhiḥ bhayadaiḥ vyāptā diśaḥ tatra abhavan nṛpa

53. O King, there the directions became filled with terrifying, dancing headless trunks (kabandha) that had many feet, many arms, and a dreadful appearance.
ध्वजवन्तोऽस्त्रवन्तश्च शस्त्रवन्तस्तथैव च ।
प्राकम्पन्त ततो राजंस्तव पुत्रे निपातिते ॥५४॥
54. dhvajavanto'stravantaśca śastravantastathaiva ca ,
prākampanta tato rājaṁstava putre nipātite.

54. O King, when your son was struck down, those bearing banners, those with missiles (astra), and those with weapons (śastra) all trembled greatly.
ह्रदाः कूपाश्च रुधिरमुद्वेमुर्नृपसत्तम ।
नद्यश्च सुमहावेगाः प्रतिस्रोतोवहाभवन् ॥५५॥
55. hradāḥ kūpāśca rudhiramudvemurnṛpasattama ,
nadyaśca sumahāvegāḥ pratisrotovahābhavan.
55. hradāḥ kūpāḥ ca rudhiram udvemuḥ nṛpasattama |
nadyaḥ ca sumahāvegāḥ pratisrotovahāḥ abhavan

55. O best among kings, lakes and wells gushed forth blood, and rivers, with very great currents, began to flow against their usual course.
पुल्लिङ्गा इव नार्यस्तु स्त्रीलिङ्गाः पुरुषाभवन् ।
दुर्योधने तदा राजन्पतिते तनये तव ॥५६॥
56. pulliṅgā iva nāryastu strīliṅgāḥ puruṣābhavan ,
duryodhane tadā rājanpatite tanaye tava.
56. pulliṅgāḥ iva nāryaḥ tu strīliṅgāḥ puruṣāḥ
abhavan | duryodhane tadā rājan patite tanaye tava
56. rājan tadā tava tanaye duryodhane patite tu

56. O King, when your son Duryodhana fell, women appeared like men (pulliṅgāḥ) and men (puruṣa) appeared like women (strīliṅgāḥ).
दृष्ट्वा तानद्भुतोत्पातान्पाञ्चालाः पाण्डवैः सह ।
आविग्नमनसः सर्वे बभूवुर्भरतर्षभ ॥५७॥
57. dṛṣṭvā tānadbhutotpātānpāñcālāḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha ,
āvignamanasaḥ sarve babhūvurbharatarṣabha.
57. dṛṣṭvā tān adbhutotpātān pāñcālāḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ
saha āvignamanasaḥ sarve babhūvuḥ bharatarṣabha

57. O best of the Bhāratas, having witnessed those astonishing phenomena, all the Pāñcālas, together with the Pāṇḍavas, became agitated in mind.
ययुर्देवा यथाकामं गन्धर्वाप्सरसस्तथा ।
कथयन्तोऽद्भुतं युद्धं सुतयोस्तव भारत ॥५८॥
58. yayurdevā yathākāmaṁ gandharvāpsarasastathā ,
kathayanto'dbhutaṁ yuddhaṁ sutayostava bhārata.
58. yayuḥ devāḥ yathākāmam gandharvāpsarasaḥ tathā
kathayantaḥ adbhutam yuddham sutayoḥ tava bhārata
58. bhārata devāḥ tathā gandharvāpsarasaḥ yathākāmam
adbhutam yuddham sutayoḥ tava kathayantaḥ yayuḥ
58. O Bhārata, the gods, along with the Gandharvas and Apsaras, departed as they wished, recounting the astonishing battle of your two sons.
तथैव सिद्धा राजेन्द्र तथा वातिकचारणाः ।
नरसिंहौ प्रशंसन्तौ विप्रजग्मुर्यथागतम् ॥५९॥
59. tathaiva siddhā rājendra tathā vātikacāraṇāḥ ,
narasiṁhau praśaṁsantau viprajagmuryathāgatam.
59. tathā eva siddhāḥ rājendra tathā vātikacāraṇāḥ
narasiṃhau praśaṃsantau viprajagmuḥ yathāgatam

59. In the same manner, O king of kings, the Siddhas, and also the Vātikas and Cāraṇas, praising the two heroes, departed as they had come.
