वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः सत्यवती काले वधूं स्नातामृतौ तदा ।
संवेशयन्ती शयने शनकैर्वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ satyavatī kāle vadhūṁ snātāmṛtau tadā ,
saṁveśayantī śayane śanakairvākyamabravīt.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, at the appropriate time, Satyavatī, while gently settling her daughter-in-law - who had just bathed after her menstrual period - onto the bed, slowly spoke these words.
कौसल्ये देवरस्तेऽस्ति सोऽद्य त्वानुप्रवेक्ष्यति ।
अप्रमत्ता प्रतीक्षैनं निशीथे आगमिष्यति ॥२॥
2. kausalye devaraste'sti so'dya tvānupravekṣyati ,
apramattā pratīkṣainaṁ niśīthe āgamiṣyati.
2. kausalye devaraḥ te asti saḥ adya tvā anupravekṣyati
apramattā pratīkṣa enam niśīthe āgamiṣyati
2. O Kausalya, your brother-in-law is here; he will approach you today. Be attentive and wait for him; he will arrive in the middle of the night.
श्वश्र्वास्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा शयाना शयने शुभे ।
साचिन्तयत्तदा भीष्ममन्यांश्च कुरुपुंगवान् ॥३॥
3. śvaśrvāstadvacanaṁ śrutvā śayānā śayane śubhe ,
sācintayattadā bhīṣmamanyāṁśca kurupuṁgavān.
3. śvaśrvāḥ tat vacanam śrutvā śayānā śayane śubhe
sā acintayat tadā bhīṣmam anyān ca kurupuṅgavān
3. Having heard that statement from her mother-in-law, she, lying on her auspicious bed, then thought of Bhishma and the other foremost Kuru heroes.
ततोऽम्बिकायां प्रथमं नियुक्तः सत्यवागृषिः ।
दीप्यमानेषु दीपेषु शयनं प्रविवेश ह ॥४॥
4. tato'mbikāyāṁ prathamaṁ niyuktaḥ satyavāgṛṣiḥ ,
dīpyamāneṣu dīpeṣu śayanaṁ praviveśa ha.
4. tataḥ ambikāyām prathamam niyuktaḥ satyavāk
ṛṣiḥ dīpyamāneṣu dīpeṣu śayanam praviveśa ha
4. Then, the truthful sage (ṛṣi), having been appointed first to Ambika, entered her bed chamber while the lamps were burning.
तस्य कृष्णस्य कपिला जटा दीप्ते च लोचने ।
बभ्रूणि चैव श्मश्रूणि दृष्ट्वा देवी न्यमीलयत् ॥५॥
5. tasya kṛṣṇasya kapilā jaṭā dīpte ca locane ,
babhrūṇi caiva śmaśrūṇi dṛṣṭvā devī nyamīlayat.

5. Upon seeing his reddish-brown matted hair, his glowing eyes, and his tawny mustaches and beard, the goddess (Kāśisutā) closed her eyes.
संबभूव तया रात्रौ मातुः प्रियचिकीर्षया ।
भयात्काशिसुता तं तु नाशक्नोदभिवीक्षितुम् ॥६॥
6. saṁbabhūva tayā rātrau mātuḥ priyacikīrṣayā ,
bhayātkāśisutā taṁ tu nāśaknodabhivīkṣitum.
6. sambabhūva tayā rātrau mātuḥ priyacikīrṣayā
bhayāt kāśisutā tam tu na aśaknot abhivīkṣitum
6. He united with her that night, desiring to please his mother. However, the daughter of Kāśi, out of fear, could not look at him.
ततो निष्क्रान्तमासाद्य माता पुत्रमथाब्रवीत् ।
अप्यस्यां गुणवान्पुत्र राजपुत्रो भविष्यति ॥७॥
7. tato niṣkrāntamāsādya mātā putramathābravīt ,
apyasyāṁ guṇavānputra rājaputro bhaviṣyati.
7. tataḥ niṣkrāntam āsādya mātā putram atha abravīt
api asyām guṇavān putra rājaputraḥ bhaviṣyati
7. Then, when her son emerged, the mother approached him and asked, "Will a virtuous prince be born from her?"
निशम्य तद्वचो मातुर्व्यासः परमबुद्धिमान् ।
प्रोवाचातीन्द्रियज्ञानो विधिना संप्रचोदितः ॥८॥
8. niśamya tadvaco māturvyāsaḥ paramabuddhimān ,
provācātīndriyajñāno vidhinā saṁpracoditaḥ.
8. niśamya tat vacaḥ mātuḥ vyāsaḥ paramabuddhimān
provāca atīndriyajñānaḥ vidhinā saṃpracoditaḥ
8. Having heard his mother's words, Vyasa, who was supremely intelligent and possessed knowledge beyond the senses, spoke, impelled by divine will.
नागायुतसमप्राणो विद्वान्राजर्षिसत्तमः ।
महाभागो महावीर्यो महाबुद्धिर्भविष्यति ॥९॥
9. nāgāyutasamaprāṇo vidvānrājarṣisattamaḥ ,
mahābhāgo mahāvīryo mahābuddhirbhaviṣyati.
9. nāgāyutasamaprāṇaḥ vidvān rājarṣisattamaḥ
mahābhāgaḥ mahāvīryaḥ mahābuddhiḥ bhaviṣyati
9. He will be learned, the foremost among royal sages, possessing strength equal to ten thousand elephants, greatly fortunate, immensely valorous, and highly intelligent.
तस्य चापि शतं पुत्रा भविष्यन्ति महाबलाः ।
किं तु मातुः स वैगुण्यादन्ध एव भविष्यति ॥१०॥
10. tasya cāpi śataṁ putrā bhaviṣyanti mahābalāḥ ,
kiṁ tu mātuḥ sa vaiguṇyādandha eva bhaviṣyati.
10. tasya ca api śatam putrāḥ bhaviṣyanti mahābalāḥ
kim tu mātuḥ saḥ vaiguṇyāt andhaḥ eva bhaviṣyati
10. And he will also have a hundred immensely powerful sons. However, due to his mother's flaw, he himself will be blind.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा माता पुत्रमथाब्रवीत् ।
नान्धः कुरूणां नृपतिरनुरूपस्तपोधन ॥११॥
11. tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā mātā putramathābravīt ,
nāndhaḥ kurūṇāṁ nṛpatiranurūpastapodhana.
11. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā mātā putram atha abravīt
na andhaḥ kurūṇām nṛpatiḥ anurūpaḥ tapodhana
11. Hearing his words, the mother then said to her son, "O ascetic (tapodhana), a blind man is not a suitable king for the Kurus."
ज्ञातिवंशस्य गोप्तारं पितॄणां वंशवर्धनम् ।
द्वितीयं कुरुवंशस्य राजानं दातुमर्हसि ॥१२॥
12. jñātivaṁśasya goptāraṁ pitṝṇāṁ vaṁśavardhanam ,
dvitīyaṁ kuruvaṁśasya rājānaṁ dātumarhasi.
12. jñātivaṃśasya goptāram pitṝṇām vaṃśavardhanam
dvitīyam kurūvaṃśasya rājānam dātum arhasi
12. You should appoint a second king for the Kuru lineage, one who will protect the family and enhance the line of ancestors.
स तथेति प्रतिज्ञाय निश्चक्राम महातपाः ।
सापि कालेन कौसल्या सुषुवेऽन्धं तमात्मजम् ॥१३॥
13. sa tatheti pratijñāya niścakrāma mahātapāḥ ,
sāpi kālena kausalyā suṣuve'ndhaṁ tamātmajam.
13. saḥ tathā iti pratijñāya niścakrāma mahātapāḥ sā
api kālena kausalyā suṣuve andham tam ātmajam
13. Having promised, "So be it," that great ascetic (mahātapāḥ) then departed. In due course, Kausalya also gave birth to that blind son.
पुनरेव तु सा देवी परिभाष्य स्नुषां ततः ।
ऋषिमावाहयत्सत्या यथापूर्वमनिन्दिता ॥१४॥
14. punareva tu sā devī paribhāṣya snuṣāṁ tataḥ ,
ṛṣimāvāhayatsatyā yathāpūrvamaninditā.
14. punaḥ eva tu sā devī paribhāṣya snuṣām tataḥ
ṛṣim āvāhayat satyā yathāpūrvam aninditā
14. But then, the blameless queen Satyavati, having admonished her daughter-in-law, invoked the sage as she had done before.
ततस्तेनैव विधिना महर्षिस्तामपद्यत ।
अम्बालिकामथाभ्यागादृषिं दृष्ट्वा च सापि तम् ।
विषण्णा पाण्डुसंकाशा समपद्यत भारत ॥१५॥
15. tatastenaiva vidhinā maharṣistāmapadyata ,
ambālikāmathābhyāgādṛṣiṁ dṛṣṭvā ca sāpi tam ,
viṣaṇṇā pāṇḍusaṁkāśā samapadyata bhārata.
15. tataḥ tena eva vidhinā maharṣiḥ
tām apadyata ambālikām atha ṛṣim
dṛṣṭvā ca sā api tam abhyāgāt viṣaṇṇā
pāṇḍusaṅkāśā samapadyata bhārata
15. Then, by that very method, the great sage approached Ambalika. And then, having seen the sage, she also approached him, becoming sorrowful and pale, O Bhārata.
तां भीतां पाण्डुसंकाशां विषण्णां प्रेक्ष्य पार्थिव ।
व्यासः सत्यवतीपुत्र इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१६॥
16. tāṁ bhītāṁ pāṇḍusaṁkāśāṁ viṣaṇṇāṁ prekṣya pārthiva ,
vyāsaḥ satyavatīputra idaṁ vacanamabravīt.
16. tām bhītām pāṇḍusaṅkāśām viṣaṇṇām prekṣya pārthiva
vyāsaḥ satyavatīputraḥ idam vacanam abravīt
16. O King, having seen her - frightened, pale-looking, and sorrowful - Vyasa, the son of Satyavati, spoke these words.
यस्मात्पाण्डुत्वमापन्ना विरूपं प्रेक्ष्य मामपि ।
तस्मादेष सुतस्तुभ्यं पाण्डुरेव भविष्यति ॥१७॥
17. yasmātpāṇḍutvamāpannā virūpaṁ prekṣya māmapi ,
tasmādeṣa sutastubhyaṁ pāṇḍureva bhaviṣyati.
17. yasmāt pāṇḍutvam āpannā virūpam prekṣya mām api
tasmāt eṣaḥ sutaḥ tubhyam pāṇḍuḥ eva bhaviṣyati
17. Because you developed paleness even after seeing my disfigured form, therefore this son for you will indeed be named Pāṇḍu.
नाम चास्य तदेवेह भविष्यति शुभानने ।
इत्युक्त्वा स निराक्रामद्भगवानृषिसत्तमः ॥१८॥
18. nāma cāsya tadeveha bhaviṣyati śubhānane ,
ityuktvā sa nirākrāmadbhagavānṛṣisattamaḥ.
18. nāma ca asya tat eva iha bhaviṣyati śubhānane
iti uktvā saḥ nirākrāmat bhagavān ṛṣisattamaḥ
18. And that same name [Pāṇḍu] will indeed be his here, O fair-faced one! Having spoken thus, that revered, best of sages (ṛṣisattama) departed.
ततो निष्क्रान्तमालोक्य सत्या पुत्रमभाषत ।
शशंस स पुनर्मात्रे तस्य बालस्य पाण्डुताम् ॥१९॥
19. tato niṣkrāntamālokya satyā putramabhāṣata ,
śaśaṁsa sa punarmātre tasya bālasya pāṇḍutām.
19. tataḥ niṣkrāntam ālokya satyā putram abhāṣata
saḥ punaḥ mātre tasya bālasya pāṇḍutām śaśaṃsa
19. Then, having seen the sage departing, Satya (Kunti) spoke to her son. He (the sage) again recounted to the mother the paleness of that child.
तं माता पुनरेवान्यमेकं पुत्रमयाचत ।
तथेति च महर्षिस्तां मातरं प्रत्यभाषत ॥२०॥
20. taṁ mātā punarevānyamekaṁ putramayācata ,
tatheti ca maharṣistāṁ mātaraṁ pratyabhāṣata.
20. tam mātā punaḥ eva anyam ekam putram ayācata
tathā iti ca maharṣiḥ tām mātaram pratyabhāṣata
20. The mother again asked him for another son. And the great sage replied to that mother, saying, "So be it."
ततः कुमारं सा देवी प्राप्तकालमजीजनत् ।
पाण्डुं लक्षणसंपन्नं दीप्यमानमिव श्रिया ।
तस्य पुत्रा महेष्वासा जज्ञिरे पञ्च पाण्डवाः ॥२१॥
21. tataḥ kumāraṁ sā devī prāptakālamajījanat ,
pāṇḍuṁ lakṣaṇasaṁpannaṁ dīpyamānamiva śriyā ,
tasya putrā maheṣvāsā jajñire pañca pāṇḍavāḥ.
21. tataḥ kumāram sā devī prāptakālam
ajījanat pāṇḍum lakṣaṇasaṃpannam
dīpyamānam iva śriyā tasya putrāḥ
maheṣvāsāḥ jajñire pañca pāṇḍavāḥ
21. Thereafter, that queen gave birth at the proper time to a son, Pāṇḍu, who was endowed with auspicious marks and shone as if with splendor. From him, five sons, great archers, the Pāṇḍavas, were born.
ऋतुकाले ततो ज्येष्ठां वधूं तस्मै न्ययोजयत् ।
सा तु रूपं च गन्धं च महर्षेः प्रविचिन्त्य तम् ।
नाकरोद्वचनं देव्या भयात्सुरसुतोपमा ॥२२॥
22. ṛtukāle tato jyeṣṭhāṁ vadhūṁ tasmai nyayojayat ,
sā tu rūpaṁ ca gandhaṁ ca maharṣeḥ pravicintya tam ,
nākarodvacanaṁ devyā bhayātsurasutopamā.
22. ṛtukāle tataḥ jyeṣṭhām vadhūm tasmai
nyayojayat sā tu rūpam ca gandham
ca maharṣeḥ pravicintya tam na akarot
vacanam devyāḥ bhayāt surasutopamā
22. Then, at the proper season, (Kuntī) directed her chief co-wife (Mādraī) towards him (the great sage, for the purpose of progeny). But that lady, comparable to a daughter of the gods, having deeply contemplated the great sage's form and aura, did not obey the queen's (Kuntī's) command, out of fear.
ततः स्वैर्भूषणैर्दासीं भूषयित्वाप्सरोपमाम् ।
प्रेषयामास कृष्णाय ततः काशिपतेः सुता ॥२३॥
23. tataḥ svairbhūṣaṇairdāsīṁ bhūṣayitvāpsaropamām ,
preṣayāmāsa kṛṣṇāya tataḥ kāśipateḥ sutā.
23. tataḥ svaiḥ bhūṣaṇaiḥ dāsīm bhūṣayitvā apsarā-upamām
preṣayāmāsa kṛṣṇāya tataḥ kāśipateḥ sutā
23. Then, the daughter of the king of Kāśi, having adorned a maidservant who resembled an Apsara with her own ornaments, sent her to Kṛṣṇa.
दासी ऋषिमनुप्राप्तं प्रत्युद्गम्याभिवाद्य च ।
संविवेशाभ्यनुज्ञाता सत्कृत्योपचचार ह ॥२४॥
24. dāsī ṛṣimanuprāptaṁ pratyudgamyābhivādya ca ,
saṁviveśābhyanujñātā satkṛtyopacacāra ha.
24. dāsī ṛṣim anuprāptam prati-udgamya abhivādya ca
saṃviveśa abhyanujñātā satkṛtya upacacāra ha
24. The maidservant went forth to meet the arrived sage, and having bowed to him, she sat down after obtaining his permission. She then honored and attended to him.
कामोपभोगेन तु स तस्यां तुष्टिमगादृषिः ।
तया सहोषितो रात्रिं महर्षिः प्रीयमाणया ॥२५॥
25. kāmopabhogena tu sa tasyāṁ tuṣṭimagādṛṣiḥ ,
tayā sahoṣito rātriṁ maharṣiḥ prīyamāṇayā.
25. kāma-upabhogena tu saḥ tasyām tuṣṭim agāt ṛṣiḥ
tayā saha uṣitaḥ rātrim mahā-ṛṣiḥ prīyamāṇayā
25. But that sage attained satisfaction through sensual enjoyment with her. The great sage spent the night with her, she being delighted.
उत्तिष्ठन्नब्रवीदेनामभुजिष्या भविष्यसि ।
अयं च ते शुभे गर्भः श्रीमानुदरमागतः ।
धर्मात्मा भविता लोके सर्वबुद्धिमतां वरः ॥२६॥
26. uttiṣṭhannabravīdenāmabhujiṣyā bhaviṣyasi ,
ayaṁ ca te śubhe garbhaḥ śrīmānudaramāgataḥ ,
dharmātmā bhavitā loke sarvabuddhimatāṁ varaḥ.
26. uttiṣṭhan abravīt enām abhujiṣyā
bhaviṣyasi ayam ca te śubhe garbhaḥ
śrīmān udaram āgataḥ dharmātmā
bhavitā loke sarvabuddhimatām varaḥ
26. Rising up, he said to her, 'You will be a free woman. And O beautiful one, this glorious child (garbha) has entered your womb. He will become a person of righteous intrinsic nature (dharmātmā) in the world, the foremost among all intelligent beings.'
स जज्ञे विदुरो नाम कृष्णद्वैपायनात्मजः ।
धृतराष्ट्रस्य च भ्राता पाण्डोश्चामितबुद्धिमान् ॥२७॥
27. sa jajñe viduro nāma kṛṣṇadvaipāyanātmajaḥ ,
dhṛtarāṣṭrasya ca bhrātā pāṇḍoścāmitabuddhimān.
27. sa jajñe viduraḥ nāma kṛṣṇadvaipāyanātmajaḥ
dhṛtarāṣṭrasya ca bhrātā pāṇḍoḥ ca amitabuddhimān
27. He was born, named Vidura, the son (ātmaja) of Kṛṣṇadvaipāyana. He was also the brother of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Pāṇḍu, and immensely intelligent.
धर्मो विदुररूपेण शापात्तस्य महात्मनः ।
माण्डव्यस्यार्थतत्त्वज्ञः कामक्रोधविवर्जितः ॥२८॥
28. dharmo vidurarūpeṇa śāpāttasya mahātmanaḥ ,
māṇḍavyasyārthatattvajñaḥ kāmakrodhavivarjitaḥ.
28. dharmaḥ vidurarūpeṇa śāpāt tasya mahātmanaḥ
māṇḍavyasya arthatattvajñaḥ kāmakrodhavivarjitaḥ
28. Dharma (natural law) himself took the form of Vidura, due to the curse of that great soul (mahātman) Māṇḍavya. He was a knower of the true nature of reality (arthatattvajña) and free from desire and anger.
स धर्मस्यानृणो भूत्वा पुनर्मात्रा समेत्य च ।
तस्यै गर्भं समावेद्य तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥२९॥
29. sa dharmasyānṛṇo bhūtvā punarmātrā sametya ca ,
tasyai garbhaṁ samāvedya tatraivāntaradhīyata.
29. saḥ dharmasya anṛṇaḥ bhūtvā punaḥ mātrā sametya ca
tasyai garbham samāvedya tatra eva antar adhīyata
29. Having become free from his obligation to the natural law (dharma), and having met his mother again, he informed her about the pregnancy and then disappeared right there.
एवं विचित्रवीर्यस्य क्षेत्रे द्वैपायनादपि ।
जज्ञिरे देवगर्भाभाः कुरुवंशविवर्धनाः ॥३०॥
30. evaṁ vicitravīryasya kṣetre dvaipāyanādapi ,
jajñire devagarbhābhāḥ kuruvaṁśavivardhanāḥ.
30. evam vicitravīryasya kṣetre dvaipāyanāt api
jajñire devagarbhābhāḥ kuruvamśavivardhanāḥ
30. Thus, from Dvaipāyana (Vyāsa) himself, in the field (kṣetra) of Vicitravīrya, were born children resembling divine embryos, who were the enhancers of the Kuru dynasty.
