युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
संशयो मे महाप्राज्ञ सुमहान्सागरोपमः ।
तन्मे शृणु महाबाहो श्रुत्वा चाख्यातुमर्हसि ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
saṁśayo me mahāprājña sumahānsāgaropamaḥ ,
tanme śṛṇu mahābāho śrutvā cākhyātumarhasi.

1. Yudhishthira said: O greatly wise one, I have a very great doubt, which is like an ocean. Therefore, O mighty-armed one, please listen to it from me, and having heard it, you should explain it.
कौतूहलं मे सुमहज्जामदग्न्यं प्रति प्रभो ।
रामं धर्मभृतां श्रेष्ठं तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि ॥२॥
2. kautūhalaṁ me sumahajjāmadagnyaṁ prati prabho ,
rāmaṁ dharmabhṛtāṁ śreṣṭhaṁ tanme vyākhyātumarhasi.
2. kautūhalam me sumahat jāmadagnyam prati prabho
rāmam dharmabhṛtām śreṣṭham tat me vyākhyātum arhasi
2. O lord, I have a very great curiosity regarding Jāmadagnya (Paraśurāma), that Rāma who is the foremost among the upholders of natural law (dharma). Therefore, you should explain that to me.
कथमेष समुत्पन्नो रामः सत्यपराक्रमः ।
कथं ब्रह्मर्षिवंशे च क्षत्रधर्मा व्यजायत ॥३॥
3. kathameṣa samutpanno rāmaḥ satyaparākramaḥ ,
kathaṁ brahmarṣivaṁśe ca kṣatradharmā vyajāyata.
3. katham eṣa samutpannaḥ rāmaḥ satyaparākramaḥ
katham brahmarṣivaṃśe ca kṣatradharmā vyajāyata
3. How was this Rāma, of true valor, born? And how was one possessing the intrinsic nature (dharma) of a kṣatriya born in the lineage of brahmin sages?
तदस्य संभवं राजन्निखिलेनानुकीर्तय ।
कौशिकाच्च कथं वंशात्क्षत्राद्वै ब्राह्मणोऽभवत् ॥४॥
4. tadasya saṁbhavaṁ rājannikhilenānukīrtaya ,
kauśikācca kathaṁ vaṁśātkṣatrādvai brāhmaṇo'bhavat.
4. tat asya saṃbhavam rājan nikhilena anukīrtaya kauśikāt
ca katham vaṃśāt kṣatrāt vai brāhmaṇaḥ abhavat
4. Therefore, O king, narrate his entire birth story. And how, indeed, did a kṣatriya from the Kauśika lineage become a brahmin?
अहो प्रभावः सुमहानासीद्वै सुमहात्मनोः ।
रामस्य च नरव्याघ्र विश्वामित्रस्य चैव ह ॥५॥
5. aho prabhāvaḥ sumahānāsīdvai sumahātmanoḥ ,
rāmasya ca naravyāghra viśvāmitrasya caiva ha.
5. aho prabhāvaḥ su-mahān āsīt vai su-mahātmanoḥ
Rāmasya ca naravyāghra Viśvāmitrasya ca eva ha
5. O tiger among men, indeed, how very great was the power of those two exalted individuals, Rama and Viśvāmitra!
कथं पुत्रानतिक्रम्य तेषां नप्तृष्वथाभवत् ।
एष दोषः सुतान्हित्वा तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि ॥६॥
6. kathaṁ putrānatikramya teṣāṁ naptṛṣvathābhavat ,
eṣa doṣaḥ sutānhitvā tanme vyākhyātumarhasi.
6. kathaṃ putrān atikramya teṣām naptṛṣu atha abhavat
eṣaḥ doṣaḥ sutān hitvā tat me vyākhyātum arhasi
6. How did this defect occur among their grandsons, bypassing their sons? You ought to explain that to me, this fault which involved abandoning the sons.
भीष्म उवाच ।
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
च्यवनस्य च संवादं कुशिकस्य च भारत ॥७॥
7. bhīṣma uvāca ,
atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam ,
cyavanasya ca saṁvādaṁ kuśikasya ca bhārata.
7. Bhīṣmaḥ uvāca atra api udāharanti imam itihāsaṃ
purātanam Cyavanasya ca saṃvādaṃ Kuśikasya ca Bhārata
7. Bhīṣma said: In this regard, they also narrate this ancient account, the dialogue between Cyavana and Kuśika, O descendant of Bharata.
एतं दोषं पुरा दृष्ट्वा भार्गवश्च्यवनस्तदा ।
आगामिनं महाबुद्धिः स्ववंशे मुनिपुंगवः ॥८॥
8. etaṁ doṣaṁ purā dṛṣṭvā bhārgavaścyavanastadā ,
āgāminaṁ mahābuddhiḥ svavaṁśe munipuṁgavaḥ.
8. etam doṣaṃ purā dṛṣṭvā Bhārgavaḥ Cyavanaḥ tadā
āgāminaṃ mahābuddhiḥ svavaṃśe munipuṅgavaḥ
8. Having previously foreseen this impending defect in his own lineage, Cyavana, the great-minded and eminent sage, a descendant of Bhṛgu, then...
संचिन्त्य मनसा सर्वं गुणदोषबलाबलम् ।
दग्धुकामः कुलं सर्वं कुशिकानां तपोधनः ॥९॥
9. saṁcintya manasā sarvaṁ guṇadoṣabalābalam ,
dagdhukāmaḥ kulaṁ sarvaṁ kuśikānāṁ tapodhanaḥ.
9. sañcintya manasā sarvam guṇadoṣabalābalam
dagdhukāmaḥ kulam sarvam kuśikānām tapodhanaḥ
9. The ascetic, having thoroughly considered in his mind all the relative strengths and weaknesses of merits and faults, was desirous of burning the entire family of the Kuśikas.
च्यवनस्तमनुप्राप्य कुशिकं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
वस्तुमिच्छा समुत्पन्ना त्वया सह ममानघ ॥१०॥
10. cyavanastamanuprāpya kuśikaṁ vākyamabravīt ,
vastumicchā samutpannā tvayā saha mamānagha.
10. cyavanaḥ tam anuprapya kuśikam vākyam abravīt
vastum icchā samutpannā tvayā saha mama anagha
10. Sage Cyavana, having approached him, King Kuśika, spoke these words: "A desire to dwell with you has arisen in me, O sinless one."
कुशिक उवाच ।
भगवन्सहधर्मोऽयं पण्डितैरिह धार्यते ।
प्रदानकाले कन्यानामुच्यते च सदा बुधैः ॥११॥
11. kuśika uvāca ,
bhagavansahadharmo'yaṁ paṇḍitairiha dhāryate ,
pradānakāle kanyānāmucyate ca sadā budhaiḥ.
11. kuśikaḥ uvāca bhagavan sahadharmaḥ ayam paṇḍitaiḥ iha
dhāryate pradāna kāle kanyānām ucyate ca sadā budhaiḥ
11. Kuśika said: "O revered one! This principle of shared duty (dharma) is upheld by the learned in this world. And it is always declared by the wise at the time of giving away daughters."
यत्तु तावदतिक्रान्तं धर्मद्वारं तपोधन ।
तत्कार्यं प्रकरिष्यामि तदनुज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥१२॥
12. yattu tāvadatikrāntaṁ dharmadvāraṁ tapodhana ,
tatkāryaṁ prakariṣyāmi tadanujñātumarhasi.
12. yat tu tāvat atikrāntam dharmadvāram tapodhana
tat kāryam prakariṣyāmi tat anujñātum arhasi
12. "But whatever path of righteous custom (dharma) has been transgressed thus far, O ascetic, I shall undertake that necessary task. You ought to permit that."
भीष्म उवाच ।
अथासनमुपादाय च्यवनस्य महामुनेः ।
कुशिको भार्यया सार्धमाजगाम यतो मुनिः ॥१३॥
13. bhīṣma uvāca ,
athāsanamupādāya cyavanasya mahāmuneḥ ,
kuśiko bhāryayā sārdhamājagāma yato muniḥ.
13. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca atha āsanam upādāya cyavanasya
mahāmuneḥ kuśikaḥ bhāryayā sārdham ājagāma yataḥ muniḥ
13. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca.
atha kuśikaḥ bhāryayā sārdham yataḥ mahāmuneḥ cyavanasya muniḥ āsanam upādāya ājagāma.
13. Bhīṣma said: Then, after the great sage (muni) Chyavana had taken his seat, Kuśika, accompanied by his wife, arrived where the sage (muni) was.
प्रगृह्य राजा भृङ्गारं पाद्यमस्मै न्यवेदयत् ।
कारयामास सर्वाश्च क्रियास्तस्य महात्मनः ॥१४॥
14. pragṛhya rājā bhṛṅgāraṁ pādyamasmai nyavedayat ,
kārayāmāsa sarvāśca kriyāstasya mahātmanaḥ.
14. pragṛhya rājā bhṛṅgāram pādyam asmai nyavedayat
kārayāmāsa sarvāḥ ca kriyāḥ tasya mahātmanaḥ
14. rājā bhṛṅgāram pragṛhya asmai pādyam nyavedayat ca tasya mahātmanaḥ sarvāḥ kriyāḥ kārayāmāsa.
14. The king, holding an ewer, offered water for the feet to him (Chyavana), and he (the king) had all the prescribed rituals performed for that great soul (mahātman).
ततः स राजा च्यवनं मधुपर्कं यथाविधि ।
प्रत्यग्राहयदव्यग्रो महात्मा नियतव्रतः ॥१५॥
15. tataḥ sa rājā cyavanaṁ madhuparkaṁ yathāvidhi ,
pratyagrāhayadavyagro mahātmā niyatavrataḥ.
15. tataḥ saḥ rājā cyavanam madhuparkam yathāvidhi
pratyagrahayat avyagraḥ mahātmā niyatavrataḥ
15. tataḥ saḥ rājā avyagraḥ mahātmā niyatavrataḥ yathāvidhi cyavanam madhuparkam pratyagrahayat.
15. Then that king, composed and disciplined (niyatavrata), offered the madhuparka (madhuparka) to Chyavana according to the prescribed rites, being himself a great soul (mahātman).
सत्कृत्य स तथा विप्रमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ।
भगवन्परवन्तौ स्वो ब्रूहि किं करवावहे ॥१६॥
16. satkṛtya sa tathā vipramidaṁ vacanamabravīt ,
bhagavanparavantau svo brūhi kiṁ karavāvahe.
16. satkṛtya saḥ tathā vipram idam vacanam abravīt
bhagavan paravantau svaḥ brūhi kim karavāvahe
16. saḥ tathā vipram satkṛtya idam vacanam abravīt.
bhagavan,
paravantau svaḥ.
kim karavāvahe brūhi.
16. Having thus honored that Brahmin, he (the king) spoke these words: 'O venerable one (bhagavan), we two are at your command; please tell us what we should do.'
यदि राज्यं यदि धनं यदि गाः संशितव्रत ।
यज्ञदानानि च तथा ब्रूहि सर्वं ददामि ते ॥१७॥
17. yadi rājyaṁ yadi dhanaṁ yadi gāḥ saṁśitavrata ,
yajñadānāni ca tathā brūhi sarvaṁ dadāmi te.
17. yadi rājyam yadi dhanam yadi gāḥ saṃśitavrata
yajñadānāni ca tathā brūhi sarvam dadāmi te
17. saṃśitavrata yadi rājyam yadi dhanam yadi gāḥ
ca tathā yajñadānāni sarvam brūhi te dadāmi
17. O observer of strict vows, if you desire a kingdom, or wealth, or cows, or even (Vedic rituals) (yajña) and donations (dāna), tell me all; I will give it to you.
इदं गृहमिदं राज्यमिदं धर्मासनं च ते ।
राजा त्वमसि शाध्युर्वीं भृत्योऽहं परवांस्त्वयि ॥१८॥
18. idaṁ gṛhamidaṁ rājyamidaṁ dharmāsanaṁ ca te ,
rājā tvamasi śādhyurvīṁ bhṛtyo'haṁ paravāṁstvayi.
18. idam gṛham idam rājyam idam dharmāsanam ca te rājā
tvam asi śādhi urvīm bhṛtyaḥ aham paravān tvayi
18. idam gṛham idam rājyam idam dharmāsanam ca te tvam
rājā asi urvīm śādhi aham bhṛtyaḥ tvayi paravān
18. This house, this kingdom, and this seat of (natural law) (dharma) are yours. You are the king; rule the earth. I am your servant, completely devoted to you.
एवमुक्ते ततो वाक्ये च्यवनो भार्गवस्तदा ।
कुशिकं प्रत्युवाचेदं मुदा परमया युतः ॥१९॥
19. evamukte tato vākye cyavano bhārgavastadā ,
kuśikaṁ pratyuvācedaṁ mudā paramayā yutaḥ.
19. evam ukte tataḥ vākye cyavanaḥ bhārgavaḥ tadā
kuśikam prati uvāca idam mudā paramayā yutaḥ
19. evam vākye ukte tataḥ tadā bhārgavaḥ cyavanaḥ
paramayā mudā yutaḥ kuśikam prati idam uvāca
19. When these words were thus spoken, Chyavana, the son of Bhṛgu, then, filled with supreme joy, said this to Kuśika.
न राज्यं कामये राजन्न धनं न च योषितः ।
न च गा न च ते देशान्न यज्ञाञ्श्रूयतामिदम् ॥२०॥
20. na rājyaṁ kāmaye rājanna dhanaṁ na ca yoṣitaḥ ,
na ca gā na ca te deśānna yajñāñśrūyatāmidam.
20. na rājyam kāmaye rājan na dhanam na ca yoṣitaḥ
na ca gāḥ na ca te deśān na yajñān śrūyatām idam
20. rājan rājyam na kāmaye dhanam na ca yoṣitaḥ na
ca gāḥ na ca te deśān na ca yajñān idam śrūyatām
20. O king, I do not desire a kingdom, nor wealth, nor women. Nor cows, nor your territories, nor (Vedic rituals) (yajña). Please listen to this.
नियमं कंचिदारप्स्ये युवयोर्यदि रोचते ।
परिचर्योऽस्मि यत्ताभ्यां युवाभ्यामविशङ्कया ॥२१॥
21. niyamaṁ kaṁcidārapsye yuvayoryadi rocate ,
paricaryo'smi yattābhyāṁ yuvābhyāmaviśaṅkayā.
21. niyamam kaṃcit ārapśye yuvayoḥ yadi rocate
paricaryaḥ asmi yat tābhyām yuvābhyām aviśaṅkayā
21. If it pleases you both, I shall undertake a particular discipline. Indeed, I am here to be served by you two without any hesitation.
एवमुक्ते तदा तेन दंपती तौ जहर्षतुः ।
प्रत्यब्रूतां च तमृषिमेवमस्त्विति भारत ॥२२॥
22. evamukte tadā tena daṁpatī tau jaharṣatuḥ ,
pratyabrūtāṁ ca tamṛṣimevamastviti bhārata.
22. evam ukte tadā tena dampatī tau jaharṣatuḥ
pratyabrūtām ca tam ṛṣim evam astu iti bhārata
22. When thus spoken by him, that couple rejoiced. And they replied to that sage, saying, "So be it," O Bhārata.
अथ तं कुशिको हृष्टः प्रावेशयदनुत्तमम् ।
गृहोद्देशं ततस्तत्र दर्शनीयमदर्शयत् ॥२३॥
23. atha taṁ kuśiko hṛṣṭaḥ prāveśayadanuttamam ,
gṛhoddeśaṁ tatastatra darśanīyamadarśayat.
23. atha tam kuśikaḥ hṛṣṭaḥ prāveśayat anuttamam
gṛhoddśam tataḥ tatra darśanīyam adarśayat
23. Then, the delighted Kuśika led him into an excellent part of the house. Thereupon, he showed him what was worth seeing there.
इयं शय्या भगवतो यथाकाममिहोष्यताम् ।
प्रयतिष्यावहे प्रीतिमाहर्तुं ते तपोधन ॥२४॥
24. iyaṁ śayyā bhagavato yathākāmamihoṣyatām ,
prayatiṣyāvahe prītimāhartuṁ te tapodhana.
24. iyam śayyā bhagavataḥ yathākāmam iha uṣyatām
prayatiṣyāvahe prītim āhartum te tapodhana
24. This bed is for the revered one. May you stay here as you wish. We two shall endeavor to bring you pleasure, O ascetic (tapodhana).
अथ सूर्योऽतिचक्राम तेषां संवदतां तथा ।
अथर्षिश्चोदयामास पानमन्नं तथैव च ॥२५॥
25. atha sūryo'ticakrāma teṣāṁ saṁvadatāṁ tathā ,
atharṣiścodayāmāsa pānamannaṁ tathaiva ca.
25. atha sūryaḥ aticakrāma teṣām saṃvadatām tathā
atha ṛṣiḥ codayāmāsa pānam annam tathā eva ca
25. While they were thus conversing, the sun set. Then the sage requested drink and food.
तमपृच्छत्ततो राजा कुशिकः प्रणतस्तदा ।
किमन्नजातमिष्टं ते किमुपस्थापयाम्यहम् ॥२६॥
26. tamapṛcchattato rājā kuśikaḥ praṇatastadā ,
kimannajātamiṣṭaṁ te kimupasthāpayāmyaham.
26. tam apṛcchat tataḥ rājā kuśikaḥ praṇataḥ tadā
kim annajātam iṣṭam te kim upasthāpayāmi aham
26. Then, the humble King Kuśika asked him: 'What kind of food do you desire? What should I offer?'
ततः स परया प्रीत्या प्रत्युवाच जनाधिपम् ।
औपपत्तिकमाहारं प्रयच्छस्वेति भारत ॥२७॥
27. tataḥ sa parayā prītyā pratyuvāca janādhipam ,
aupapattikamāhāraṁ prayacchasveti bhārata.
27. tataḥ saḥ parayā prītyā prati uvāca janādhipam
aupapattikam āhāram prayacchasva iti bhārata
27. Then, with great delight, he replied to the king: 'O Bhārata, offer me whatever food is readily available.'
तद्वचः पूजयित्वा तु तथेत्याह स पार्थिवः ।
यथोपपन्नं चाहारं तस्मै प्रादाज्जनाधिपः ॥२८॥
28. tadvacaḥ pūjayitvā tu tathetyāha sa pārthivaḥ ,
yathopapannaṁ cāhāraṁ tasmai prādājjanādhipaḥ.
28. tat vacaḥ pūjayitvā tu tathā iti āha saḥ pārthivaḥ
yathā upapannam ca āhāram tasmai prādāt janādhipaḥ
28. Having honored those words, that king said, 'So be it,' and then the ruler (janādhipa) gave him food just as it was available.
ततः स भगवान्भुक्त्वा दंपती प्राह धर्मवित् ।
स्वप्तुमिच्छाम्यहं निद्रा बाधते मामिति प्रभो ॥२९॥
29. tataḥ sa bhagavānbhuktvā daṁpatī prāha dharmavit ,
svaptumicchāmyahaṁ nidrā bādhate māmiti prabho.
29. tataḥ saḥ bhagavān bhuktvā dampatī prāha dharmavit
svaptum icchāmi aham nidrā bādhate mām iti prabho
29. tataḥ bhuktvā saḥ dharmavit bhagavān dampatī prāha
he prabho aham svaptum icchāmi iti nidrā mām bādhate
29. Then, after eating, that revered one, a knower of natural law (dharma), said to the couple: "O lord, I wish to sleep, for slumber oppresses me."
ततः शय्यागृहं प्राप्य भगवानृषिसत्तमः ।
संविवेश नरेन्द्रस्तु सपत्नीकः स्थितोऽभवत् ॥३०॥
30. tataḥ śayyāgṛhaṁ prāpya bhagavānṛṣisattamaḥ ,
saṁviveśa narendrastu sapatnīkaḥ sthito'bhavat.
30. tataḥ śayyāgṛham prāpya bhagavān ṛṣisattamaḥ
saṃviveśa narendraḥ tu sapatnīkaḥ sthitaḥ abhavat
30. tataḥ bhagavān ṛṣisattamaḥ śayyāgṛham prāpya
saṃviveśa tu narendraḥ sapatnīkaḥ sthitaḥ abhavat
30. Then, the venerable sage, the best among ascetics, went to the bed-chamber and lay down. However, the king remained standing with his wife.
न प्रबोध्योऽस्मि संसुप्त इत्युवाचाथ भार्गवः ।
संवाहितव्यौ पादौ मे जागर्तव्यं च वां निशि ॥३१॥
31. na prabodhyo'smi saṁsupta ityuvācātha bhārgavaḥ ,
saṁvāhitavyau pādau me jāgartavyaṁ ca vāṁ niśi.
31. na prabodhyaḥ asmi saṃsuptaḥ iti uvāca atha bhārgavaḥ
saṃvāhitavyau pādau me jāgartavyam ca vām niśi
31. atha bhārgavaḥ uvāca aham saṃsuptaḥ (san) na prabodhyaḥ
asmi iti me pādau saṃvāhitavyau ca vām niśi jāgartavyam
31. Then Bhārgava said: "If I fall into a deep sleep, I am not to be awakened. My feet are to be massaged, and you two must remain awake throughout the night."
अविशङ्कश्च कुशिकस्तथेत्याह स धर्मवित् ।
न प्रबोधयतां तं च तौ तदा रजनीक्षये ॥३२॥
32. aviśaṅkaśca kuśikastathetyāha sa dharmavit ,
na prabodhayatāṁ taṁ ca tau tadā rajanīkṣaye.
32. aviśaṅkaḥ ca kuśikaḥ tathā iti āha saḥ dharmavit
na prabodhayatām tam ca tau tadā rajanīkṣaye
32. ca aviśaṅkaḥ saḥ dharmavit kuśikaḥ tathā iti
āha ca tau tadā rajanīkṣaye tam na prabodhayatām
32. And King Kuśika, without hesitation, replied, 'So be it,' for he was a knower of natural law (dharma). And accordingly, those two did not awaken him then, even at the breaking of dawn.
यथादेशं महर्षेस्तु शुश्रूषापरमौ तदा ।
बभूवतुर्महाराज प्रयतावथ दंपती ॥३३॥
33. yathādeśaṁ maharṣestu śuśrūṣāparamau tadā ,
babhūvaturmahārāja prayatāvatha daṁpatī.
33. yathādeśam maharṣeḥ tu śuśrūṣāparamau tadā
babhūvatuḥ mahārāja prayatāv atha dampatī
33. mahārāja tadā atha dampatī prayatāv maharṣeḥ
yathādeśam śuśrūṣāparamau babhūvatuḥ
33. O great king, then that diligent couple became extremely devoted to serving the great sage as instructed.
ततः स भगवान्विप्रः समादिश्य नराधिपम् ।
सुष्वापैकेन पार्श्वेन दिवसानेकविंशतिम् ॥३४॥
34. tataḥ sa bhagavānvipraḥ samādiśya narādhipam ,
suṣvāpaikena pārśvena divasānekaviṁśatim.
34. tataḥ sa bhagavān vipraḥ samādiśya narādhipam
suṣvāpa ekena pārśvena divasān ekaviṃśatim
34. tataḥ sa bhagavān vipraḥ narādhipam samādiśya
ekena pārśvena ekaviṃśatim divasān suṣvāpa
34. Then that venerable brahmin, after giving instructions to the king, slept on one side for twenty-one days.
स तु राजा निराहारः सभार्यः कुरुनन्दन ।
पर्युपासत तं हृष्टश्च्यवनाराधने रतः ॥३५॥
35. sa tu rājā nirāhāraḥ sabhāryaḥ kurunandana ,
paryupāsata taṁ hṛṣṭaścyavanārādhane rataḥ.
35. sa tu rājā nirāhāraḥ sabhāryaḥ kurunandana
paryupāsata tam hṛṣṭaḥ cyavanārādhane rataḥ
35. kurunandana tu sa rājā nirāhāraḥ sabhāryaḥ
hṛṣṭaḥ cyavanārādhane rataḥ tam paryupāsata
35. But that king, O scion of Kuru (kurunandana), fasting and accompanied by his wife, attended upon him, joyful and dedicated to the veneration of Cyavana.
भार्गवस्तु समुत्तस्थौ स्वयमेव तपोधनः ।
अकिंचिदुक्त्वा तु गृहान्निश्चक्राम महातपाः ॥३६॥
36. bhārgavastu samuttasthau svayameva tapodhanaḥ ,
akiṁciduktvā tu gṛhānniścakrāma mahātapāḥ.

36. But Bhargava, who was rich in asceticism (tapas), stood up by himself. Then, without saying a word, that great ascetic (mahātapas) departed from the dwelling.
तमन्वगच्छतां तौ तु क्षुधितौ श्रमकर्शितौ ।
भार्यापती मुनिश्रेष्ठो न च ताववलोकयत् ॥३७॥
37. tamanvagacchatāṁ tau tu kṣudhitau śramakarśitau ,
bhāryāpatī muniśreṣṭho na ca tāvavalokayat.
37. tam anvagacchatām tau tu kṣudhitau śramakarśitau
bhāryāpatī muniśreṣṭhaḥ na ca tau avalokayat
37. Those two, the husband and wife, hungry and weakened by fatigue, followed him. However, the best of ascetics (muni) did not notice them.
तयोस्तु प्रेक्षतोरेव भार्गवाणां कुलोद्वहः ।
अन्तर्हितोऽभूद्राजेन्द्र ततो राजापतत्क्षितौ ॥३८॥
38. tayostu prekṣatoreva bhārgavāṇāṁ kulodvahaḥ ,
antarhito'bhūdrājendra tato rājāpatatkṣitau.
38. tayoḥ tu prekṣatoḥ eva bhārgavāṇām kulodvahaḥ
antardhitaḥ abhūt rājendra tataḥ rājā apatat kṣitau
38. But as those two were still watching, O king of kings, the upholder of the Bhārgava lineage vanished. Then the king fell to the ground.
स मुहूर्तं समाश्वस्य सह देव्या महाद्युतिः ।
पुनरन्वेषणे यत्नमकरोत्परमं तदा ॥३९॥
39. sa muhūrtaṁ samāśvasya saha devyā mahādyutiḥ ,
punaranveṣaṇe yatnamakarotparamaṁ tadā.
39. saḥ muhūrtam samāśvasya saha devyā mahādyutiḥ
punar anveṣaṇe yatnam akarot paramam tadā
39. Having recovered for a moment with the queen, that greatly radiant king then made a supreme effort in searching again.
