व्युषितायां च शर्वर्यामुदिते च दिवाकरे ।
उभे सेने महाराज युद्धायैव समीयतुः ॥१॥

1. Sanjaya said: 'O great king, when the night had passed and the sun had risen, both armies converged for battle.'

ते सर्वे सहिता युद्धे समालोक्य परस्परम् ॥२॥
2. abhyadhāvaṁśca saṁkruddhāḥ parasparajigīṣavaḥ ,

2. Enraged and eager to conquer each other, they all rushed into battle, having caught sight of one another.
पाण्डवा धार्तराष्ट्राश्च राजन्दुर्मन्त्रिते तव ।
व्यूहौ च व्यूह्य संरब्धाः संप्रयुद्धाः प्रहारिणः ॥३॥
3. pāṇḍavā dhārtarāṣṭrāśca rājandurmantrite tava ,
vyūhau ca vyūhya saṁrabdhāḥ saṁprayuddhāḥ prahāriṇaḥ.

3. O King, due to your ill-counsel, the Pandavas and the Dhartarashtras, enraged, arrayed their two battle formations and engaged in fierce fighting, striking at each other.
अरक्षन्मकरव्यूहं भीष्मो राजन्समन्ततः ।
तथैव पाण्डवा राजन्नरक्षन्व्यूहमात्मनः ॥४॥
4. arakṣanmakaravyūhaṁ bhīṣmo rājansamantataḥ ,
tathaiva pāṇḍavā rājannarakṣanvyūhamātmanaḥ.
4. arakṣan makaravyūham bhīṣmaḥ rājan samantataḥ
tathā eva pāṇḍavāḥ rājan arakṣan vyūham ātmanaḥ

4. O King, Bhishma protected the Makara (crocodile) battle formation from all sides. Likewise, O King, the Pandavas protected their own formation.
स निर्ययौ रथानीकं पिता देवव्रतस्तव ।
महता रथवंशेन संवृतो रथिनां वरः ॥५॥
5. sa niryayau rathānīkaṁ pitā devavratastava ,
mahatā rathavaṁśena saṁvṛto rathināṁ varaḥ.

mahatā rathavaṃśena saṃvṛtaḥ rathinām varaḥ

5. Your father, Devavrata (Bhishma), the foremost of charioteers, advanced towards the chariot division, surrounded by a large contingent of chariots.
इतरेतरमन्वीयुर्यथाभागमवस्थिताः ।
रथिनः पत्तयश्चैव दन्तिनः सादिनस्तथा ॥६॥
6. itaretaramanvīyuryathābhāgamavasthitāḥ ,
rathinaḥ pattayaścaiva dantinaḥ sādinastathā.
6. itaretaram anvīyuḥ yathābhāgam avasthitāḥ
rathinaḥ pattayaḥ ca eva dantinaḥ sādinaḥ tathā
6. yathābhāgam avasthitāḥ rathinaḥ pattayaḥ ca

6. The charioteers, foot-soldiers, elephant-riders, and cavalrymen, positioned in their respective divisions, followed one another.
तान्दृष्ट्वा प्रोद्यतान्संख्ये पाण्डवाश्च यशस्विनः ।
श्येनेन व्यूहराजेन तेनाजय्येन संयुगे ॥७॥
7. tāndṛṣṭvā prodyatānsaṁkhye pāṇḍavāśca yaśasvinaḥ ,
śyenena vyūharājena tenājayyena saṁyuge.
7. tān dṛṣṭvā prodyatān saṃkhye pāṇḍavāḥ ca yaśasvinaḥ
śyenena vyūharājena tena ajayyena saṃyuge
7. ca saṃkhye prodyatān tān yaśasvinaḥ pāṇḍavāḥ
dṛṣṭvā tena ajayyena śyenena vyūharājena saṃyuge
7. And having seen those famous Pandavas arrayed for battle, [they were formed] in that unconquerable, supreme hawk formation (vyūha) for combat.
अशोभत मुखे तस्य भीमसेनो महाबलः ।
नेत्रे शिखण्डी दुर्धर्षो धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पार्षतः ॥८॥
8. aśobhata mukhe tasya bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ ,
netre śikhaṇḍī durdharṣo dhṛṣṭadyumnaśca pārṣataḥ.
8. aśobhata mukhe tasya bhīmasenaḥ mahābalaḥ netre
śikhaṇḍī durdharṣaḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ ca pārṣataḥ
8. tasya mukhe mahābalaḥ bhīmasenaḥ aśobhata.
netre durdharṣaḥ śikhaṇḍī ca pārṣataḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ
8. In the front (mukhe) of that (formation) shone mighty Bhīmasena. In its eyes (netre) were the unconquerable Śikhaṇḍī and Dhṛṣṭadyumna, son of Pṛṣata.
शीर्षं तस्याभवद्वीरः सात्यकिः सत्यविक्रमः ।
विधुन्वन्गाण्डिवं पार्थो ग्रीवायामभवत्तदा ॥९॥
9. śīrṣaṁ tasyābhavadvīraḥ sātyakiḥ satyavikramaḥ ,
vidhunvangāṇḍivaṁ pārtho grīvāyāmabhavattadā.
9. śīrṣam tasya abhavat vīraḥ sātyakiḥ satyavikramaḥ
vidhunvan gāṇḍīvam pārthaḥ grīvāyām abhavat tadā
9. tasya śīrṣam satyavikramaḥ vīraḥ sātyakiḥ abhavat.
tadā gāṇḍīvam vidhunvan pārthaḥ grīvāyām abhavat.
9. The head (śīrṣam) of that (formation) was the hero Sātyaki, whose valor (vikrama) was true. Then, wielding his Gaṇḍīva bow, Arjuna (pārtha) was in its neck (grīvāyām).
अक्षौहिण्या समग्रा या वामपक्षोऽभवत्तदा ।
महात्मा द्रुपदः श्रीमान्सह पुत्रेण संयुगे ॥१०॥
10. akṣauhiṇyā samagrā yā vāmapakṣo'bhavattadā ,
mahātmā drupadaḥ śrīmānsaha putreṇa saṁyuge.
10. akṣauhiṇyā samagrā yā vāmapakṣaḥ abhavat tadā
mahātmā drupadaḥ śrīmān saha putreṇa saṃyuge
10. tadā samagrā yā akṣauhiṇyā (yuktā senā) vāmapakṣaḥ abhavat.
saṃyuge mahātmā śrīmān drupadaḥ putreṇa saha (tatrāste).
10. Then, that entire [force], consisting of an akṣauhiṇī, became the left wing, (led by) the great-souled, glorious Drupada along with his son in battle.
दक्षिणश्चाभवत्पक्षः कैकेयोऽक्षौहिणीपतिः ।
पृष्ठतो द्रौपदेयाश्च सौभद्रश्चापि वीर्यवान् ॥११॥
11. dakṣiṇaścābhavatpakṣaḥ kaikeyo'kṣauhiṇīpatiḥ ,
pṛṣṭhato draupadeyāśca saubhadraścāpi vīryavān.
11. dakṣiṇaḥ ca abhavat pakṣaḥ kaikeyaḥ akṣauhiṇīpatiḥ
pṛṣṭhataḥ draupadeyāḥ ca saubhadraḥ ca api vīryavān
11. kaikeyaḥ akṣauhiṇīpatiḥ dakṣiṇaḥ pakṣaḥ ca abhavat
pṛṣṭhataḥ ca draupadeyāḥ ca api vīryavān saubhadraḥ
11. The king of Kaikeya, who commanded an akṣauhiṇī division, formed the right flank. In the rear were the sons of Draupadi and also the valiant Abhimanyu.
पृष्ठे समभवच्छ्रीमान्स्वयं राजा युधिष्ठिरः ।
भ्रातृभ्यां सहितो धीमान्यमाभ्यां चारुविक्रमः ॥१२॥
12. pṛṣṭhe samabhavacchrīmānsvayaṁ rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
bhrātṛbhyāṁ sahito dhīmānyamābhyāṁ cāruvikramaḥ.
12. pṛṣṭhe samabhavat śrīmān svayam rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
bhrātṛbhyām sahitaḥ dhīmān yamābhyām cāruvikramaḥ
12. śrīmān svayam rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ dhīmān cāruvikramaḥ
yamābhyām bhrātṛbhyām sahitaḥ pṛṣṭhe samabhavat
12. The glorious King Yudhishthira himself was in the rear, accompanied by his two intelligent and beautifully valiant brothers, Nakula and Sahadeva (yamābhyām).
प्रविश्य तु रणे भीमो मकरं मुखतस्तदा ।
भीष्ममासाद्य संग्रामे छादयामास सायकैः ॥१३॥
13. praviśya tu raṇe bhīmo makaraṁ mukhatastadā ,
bhīṣmamāsādya saṁgrāme chādayāmāsa sāyakaiḥ.
13. praviśya tu raṇe bhīmaḥ makaram mukhataḥ tadā
bhīṣmam āsādya saṃgrāme chādayāmāsa sāyakaiḥ
13. tadā bhīmaḥ tu raṇe makaram mukhataḥ praviśya
saṃgrāme bhīṣmam āsādya sāyakaiḥ chādayāmāsa
13. Having entered the battle (raṇe), Bhima then, from the front of the 'crocodile' formation (makara-vyūha), approached Bhishma in the combat (saṃgrāme) and covered him with arrows.
ततो भीष्मो महास्त्राणि पातयामास भारत ।
मोहयन्पाण्डुपुत्राणां व्यूढं सैन्यं महाहवे ॥१४॥
14. tato bhīṣmo mahāstrāṇi pātayāmāsa bhārata ,
mohayanpāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ vyūḍhaṁ sainyaṁ mahāhave.
14. tataḥ bhīṣmaḥ mahāstrāṇi pātayāmāsa bhārata
mohayān pāṇḍuputrāṇām vyūḍham sainyam mahāhave
14. tataḥ bhārata bhīṣmaḥ mahāstrāṇi pātayāmāsa,
mahāhave pāṇḍuputrāṇām vyūḍham sainyam mohayān
14. Then Bhishma, O scion of Bharata, discharged his great weapons, bewildering the arrayed army of the sons of Pandu in the great battle.
संमुह्यति तदा सैन्ये त्वरमाणो धनंजयः ।
भीष्मं शरसहस्रेण विव्याध रणमूर्धनि ॥१५॥
15. saṁmuhyati tadā sainye tvaramāṇo dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
bhīṣmaṁ śarasahasreṇa vivyādha raṇamūrdhani.
15. saṃmuhyati tadā sainye tvaramāṇaḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ
bhīṣmaṃ śarasahasreṇa vivyādha raṇamūrdhani
15. tadā sainye saṃmuhyati tvaramāṇaḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ
raṇamūrdhani bhīṣmaṃ śarasahasreṇa vivyādha
15. When the army became bewildered, then Dhananjaya (Arjuna), rushing quickly, pierced Bhishma with a thousand arrows at the forefront of the battle.
परिसंवार्य चास्त्राणि भीष्ममुक्तानि संयुगे ।
स्वेनानीकेन हृष्टेन युद्धाय समवस्थितः ॥१६॥
16. parisaṁvārya cāstrāṇi bhīṣmamuktāni saṁyuge ,
svenānīkena hṛṣṭena yuddhāya samavasthitaḥ.
16. parisaṃvārya ca astrāṇi bhīṣmamuktāni saṃyuge
svena anīkena hṛṣṭena yuddhāya samavasthitaḥ
16. ca saṃyuge bhīṣmamuktāni astrāṇi parisaṃvārya,
svena hṛṣṭena anīkena (saḥ) yuddhāya samavasthitaḥ
16. And, having completely warded off the weapons released by Bhishma in that battle, he stood ready for combat with his own delighted army.
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा भारद्वाजमभाषत ।
पूर्वं दृष्ट्वा वधं घोरं बलस्य बलिनां वरः ।
भ्रातॄणां च वधं युद्धे स्मरमाणो महारथः ॥१७॥
17. tato duryodhano rājā bhāradvājamabhāṣata ,
pūrvaṁ dṛṣṭvā vadhaṁ ghoraṁ balasya balināṁ varaḥ ,
bhrātṝṇāṁ ca vadhaṁ yuddhe smaramāṇo mahārathaḥ.
17. tataḥ duryodhanaḥ rājā bhāradvājam
abhāṣata pūrvaṃ dṛṣṭvā vadhaṃ ghoraṃ
balasya balināṃ varaḥ bhrātṝṇāṃ ca
vadhaṃ yuddhe smaramāṇaḥ mahārathaḥ
17. tataḥ rājā,
balināṃ varaḥ,
mahārathaḥ duryodhanaḥ,
pūrvaṃ ghoraṃ balasya vadhaṃ dṛṣṭvā ca yuddhe bhrātṝṇāṃ vadhaṃ smaramāṇaḥ,
bhāradvājam abhāṣata
17. Then King Duryodhana, the best among the strong and a great warrior (mahāratha), spoke to Bharadvaja (Drona), having previously witnessed the terrible destruction of his forces and remembering the slaying of his brothers in battle.
आचार्य सततं त्वं हि हितकामो ममानघ ।
वयं हि त्वां समाश्रित्य भीष्मं चैव पितामहम् ॥१८॥
18. ācārya satataṁ tvaṁ hi hitakāmo mamānagha ,
vayaṁ hi tvāṁ samāśritya bhīṣmaṁ caiva pitāmaham.
18. ācārya satataṃ tvaṃ hi hitakāmaḥ mama anagha
vayam hi tvām samāśritya bhīṣmaṃ ca eva pitāmahaṃ
18. anagha ācārya,
hi tvaṃ satataṃ mama hitakāmaḥ.
hi vayam tvām ca eva pitāmahaṃ bhīṣmaṃ samāśritya.

18. O sinless Teacher, you are always indeed my well-wisher. We, having indeed taken refuge in you and also Grandfather Bhishma...
देवानपि रणे जेतुं प्रार्थयामो न संशयः ।
किमु पाण्डुसुतान्युद्धे हीनवीर्यपराक्रमान् ॥१९॥
19. devānapi raṇe jetuṁ prārthayāmo na saṁśayaḥ ,
kimu pāṇḍusutānyuddhe hīnavīryaparākramān.
19. devān api raṇe jetum prārthayāmaḥ na saṃśayaḥ
kimu pāṇḍusutān yuddhe hīnavīryaparākramān
19. na saṃśayaḥ (asti),
vayam devān api raṇe jetum prārthayāmaḥ.
kimu (vayam) yuddhe hīnavīryaparākramān pāṇḍusutān (jetum prārthayāmaḥ)
19. We certainly desire to conquer even the gods in battle; there is no doubt about it. What then of the sons of Pāṇḍu, who are deficient in valor and prowess, in this war?
एवमुक्तस्ततो द्रोणस्तव पुत्रेण मारिष ।
अभिनत्पाण्डवानीकं प्रेक्षमाणस्य सात्यकेः ॥२०॥
20. evamuktastato droṇastava putreṇa māriṣa ,
abhinatpāṇḍavānīkaṁ prekṣamāṇasya sātyakeḥ.
20. evam uktaḥ tataḥ droṇaḥ tava putreṇa māriṣa
abhinat pāṇḍavānīkam prekṣamāṇasya sātyakeḥ
20. māriṣa,
tava putreṇa evam uktaḥ droṇaḥ tataḥ prekṣamāṇasya sātyakeḥ pāṇḍavānīkam abhinat
20. O respected one (māriṣa), Droṇa, thus addressed by your son, then shattered the Pāṇḍava army while Sātyaki was watching.
सात्यकिस्तु तदा द्रोणं वारयामास भारत ।
ततः प्रववृते युद्धं तुमुलं लोमहर्षणम् ॥२१॥
21. sātyakistu tadā droṇaṁ vārayāmāsa bhārata ,
tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṁ tumulaṁ lomaharṣaṇam.
21. sātyakiḥ tu tadā droṇam vārayāmāsa bhārata
tataḥ pravavṛte yuddham tumulam lomaharṣaṇam
21. bhārata,
tadā sātyakiḥ tu droṇam vārayāmāsa.
tataḥ tumulam lomaharṣaṇam yuddham pravavṛte
21. But then, O Bhārata, Sātyaki restrained Droṇa. Thereupon, a tumultuous and hair-raising battle ensued.
शैनेयं तु रणे क्रुद्धो भारद्वाजः प्रतापवान् ।
अविध्यन्निशितैर्बाणैर्जत्रुदेशे हसन्निव ॥२२॥
22. śaineyaṁ tu raṇe kruddho bhāradvājaḥ pratāpavān ,
avidhyanniśitairbāṇairjatrudeśe hasanniva.
22. śaineyam tu raṇe kruddhaḥ bhāradvājaḥ pratāpavān
avidhyat niśitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ jatrudeśe hasan iva
22. tu,
rane kruddhaḥ pratāpavān bhāradvājaḥ hasan iva niśitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ jatrudeśe śaineyam avidhyat
22. But then, the enraged and mighty Bhāradvāja (Droṇa) in battle pierced Śaineya (Sātyaki) in the collarbone region with sharp arrows, as if laughing.
भीमसेनस्ततः क्रुद्धो भारद्वाजमविध्यत ।
संरक्षन्सात्यकिं राजन्द्रोणाच्छस्त्रभृतां वरात् ॥२३॥
23. bhīmasenastataḥ kruddho bhāradvājamavidhyata ,
saṁrakṣansātyakiṁ rājandroṇācchastrabhṛtāṁ varāt.
23. bhīmasenaḥ tataḥ kruddhaḥ bhāradvājam avidhyata
saṃrakṣan sātyakim rājan droṇāt śastrabhṛtām varāt
23. rājan tataḥ kruddhaḥ bhīmasenaḥ sātyakim droṇāt

23. O King, then Bhimasena, enraged, struck Drona, the son of Bharadvaja, while protecting Satyaki from that best of weapon-wielders.
ततो द्रोणश्च भीष्मश्च तथा शल्यश्च मारिष ।
भीमसेनं रणे क्रुद्धाश्छादयां चक्रिरे शरैः ॥२४॥
24. tato droṇaśca bhīṣmaśca tathā śalyaśca māriṣa ,
bhīmasenaṁ raṇe kruddhāśchādayāṁ cakrire śaraiḥ.
24. tataḥ droṇaḥ ca bhīṣmaḥ ca tathā śalyaḥ ca māriṣa
bhīmasenam raṇe kruddhāḥ chādayām cakrire śaraiḥ
24. māriṣa tataḥ droṇaḥ ca bhīṣmaḥ ca tathā śalyaḥ ca
kruddhāḥ raṇe bhīmasenam śaraiḥ chādayām cakrire
24. O venerable one, then Drona, Bhishma, and also Shalya, enraged in battle, enveloped Bhimasena with arrows.
तत्राभिमन्युः संक्रुद्धो द्रौपदेयाश्च मारिष ।
विव्यधुर्निशितैर्बाणैः सर्वांस्तानुद्यतायुधान् ॥२५॥
25. tatrābhimanyuḥ saṁkruddho draupadeyāśca māriṣa ,
vivyadhurniśitairbāṇaiḥ sarvāṁstānudyatāyudhān.
25. tatra abhimanyuḥ saṃkruddhaḥ draupadeyāḥ ca māriṣa
vivyadhuḥ niśitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ sarvān tān udyatāyudhān
25. māriṣa tatra saṃkruddhaḥ abhimanyuḥ ca draupadeyāḥ
niśitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ udyatāyudhān sarvān tān vivyadhuḥ
25. O venerable one, then Abhimanyu and the sons of Draupadi, greatly enraged, struck all of those who had their weapons raised with sharp arrows.
भीष्मद्रोणौ च संक्रुद्धावापतन्तौ महाबलौ ।
प्रत्युद्ययौ शिखण्डी तु महेष्वासो महाहवे ॥२६॥
26. bhīṣmadroṇau ca saṁkruddhāvāpatantau mahābalau ,
pratyudyayau śikhaṇḍī tu maheṣvāso mahāhave.
26. bhīṣmadroṇau ca saṃkruddhau āpatantau mahābalau
pratyudyayau śikhaṇḍī tu maheṣvāsaḥ mahāhave
26. tu mahāhave maheṣvāsaḥ śikhaṇḍī saṃkruddhau

26. But in the great battle, Shikhandi, the great archer, advanced to confront the greatly enraged and immensely powerful Bhishma and Drona as they attacked.
प्रगृह्य बलवद्वीरो धनुर्जलदनिस्वनम् ।
अभ्यवर्षच्छरैस्तूर्णं छादयानो दिवाकरम् ॥२७॥
27. pragṛhya balavadvīro dhanurjaladanisvanam ,
abhyavarṣaccharaistūrṇaṁ chādayāno divākaram.
27. pragṛhya balavat vīraḥ dhanuḥ jaladanisvanam
abhyavarṣat śaraiḥ tūrṇam chādayānaḥ divākaram
27. vīraḥ balavat jaladanisvanam dhanuḥ pragṛhya
tūrṇam śaraiḥ abhyavarṣat divākaram chādayānaḥ
27. The hero, powerfully grasping his bow which sounded like thunder, quickly showered arrows, covering the sun.
शिखण्डिनं समासाद्य भरतानां पितामहः ।
अवर्जयत संग्रामे स्त्रीत्वं तस्यानुसंस्मरन् ॥२८॥
28. śikhaṇḍinaṁ samāsādya bharatānāṁ pitāmahaḥ ,
avarjayata saṁgrāme strītvaṁ tasyānusaṁsmaran.
28. śikhaṇḍinam samāsādya bharatānām pitāmahaḥ
avarjayata saṅgrāme strītvaṃ tasya anusaṃsmaran
28. bharatānām pitāmahaḥ śikhaṇḍinam samāsādya
tasya strītvaṃ anusaṃsmaran saṅgrāme avarjayata
28. The grandfather of the Bharatas (Bhishma), having approached Shikhandin, avoided him in battle, remembering his (Shikhandin's) womanhood.
ततो द्रोणो महाराज अभ्यद्रवत तं रणे ।
रक्षमाणस्ततो भीष्मं तव पुत्रेण चोदितः ॥२९॥
29. tato droṇo mahārāja abhyadravata taṁ raṇe ,
rakṣamāṇastato bhīṣmaṁ tava putreṇa coditaḥ.

29. O great king, Drona then rushed towards him (Shikhandin) in battle, protecting Bhishma, being urged by your son (Duryodhana).
शिखण्डी तु समासाद्य द्रोणं शस्त्रभृतां वरम् ।
अवर्जयत संग्रामे युगान्ताग्निमिवोल्बणम् ॥३०॥
30. śikhaṇḍī tu samāsādya droṇaṁ śastrabhṛtāṁ varam ,
avarjayata saṁgrāme yugāntāgnimivolbaṇam.

avarjayata saṅgrāme yugāntāgnim iva ulbaṇam
30. tu śikhaṇḍī śastrabṛtām varam droṇam samāsādya

30. But Shikhandin, having approached Drona, who was the best among weapon-bearers, avoided him in battle as if (Drona were) the fierce fire at the end of an eon.
ततो बलेन महता पुत्रस्तव विशां पते ।
जुगोप भीष्ममासाद्य प्रार्थयानो महद्यशः ॥३१॥
31. tato balena mahatā putrastava viśāṁ pate ,
jugopa bhīṣmamāsādya prārthayāno mahadyaśaḥ.

jugopa bhīṣmam āsādya prārthayānaḥ mahat yaśaḥ

31. O king, your son, seeking great glory, then approached Bhishma and protected him with immense force.
तथैव पाण्डवा राजन्पुरस्कृत्य धनंजयम् ।
भीष्ममेवाभ्यवर्तन्त जये कृत्वा दृढां मतिम् ॥३२॥
32. tathaiva pāṇḍavā rājanpuraskṛtya dhanaṁjayam ,
bhīṣmamevābhyavartanta jaye kṛtvā dṛḍhāṁ matim.
32. tathā eva pāṇḍavāḥ rājan puraskṛtya dhanañjayam
bhīṣmam eva abhyavartanta jaye kṛtvā dṛḍhām matim
32. rājan tathā eva pāṇḍavāḥ dhanañjayam puraskṛtya
jaye dṛḍhām matim kṛtvā bhīṣmam eva abhyavartanta
32. O king, in the same way, the Pāṇḍavas, with Dhananjaya at their forefront and having formed a firm resolve for victory, advanced towards Bhishma.
तद्युद्धमभवद्घोरं देवानां दानवैरिव ।
जयं च काङ्क्षतां नित्यं यशश्च परमाद्भुतम् ॥३३॥
33. tadyuddhamabhavadghoraṁ devānāṁ dānavairiva ,
jayaṁ ca kāṅkṣatāṁ nityaṁ yaśaśca paramādbhutam.
33. tat yuddham abhavat ghoram devānām dānavaiḥ iva
jayam ca kāṅkṣatām nityam yaśaḥ ca paramādbhutam
33. tat yuddham devānām dānavaiḥ iva ghoram abhavat
jayam ca kāṅkṣatām nityam yaśaḥ ca paramādbhutam
33. That battle became dreadful, resembling the conflict between the gods and the Dānavas (demons), with both sides constantly desiring victory and supreme glory.
