Duryodhana said: Then Arjuna, the slayer of enemy heroes, approached Citrasena and, laughing, spoke these courageous words.
भ्रातॄनर्हसि नो वीर मोक्तुं गन्धर्वसत्तम ।

2.
O hero, best of Gandharvas, you should release our brothers. For it is not fitting that they should suffer such humiliation while the Pandavas are still alive.
एवमुक्तस्तु गन्धर्वः पाण्डवेन महात्मना ।

3.
When the magnanimous Pāṇḍava (Arjuna) spoke to him thus, the Gandharva replied: 'O Karṇa, we [Gandharvas] set out because we heard you deliberating: "We shall see the Pāṇḍavas, along with their wives, deprived of happiness." '

4.
But as those words were being spoken by the Gandharva, I (Duryodhana), overcome with shame, wished to sink into the earth.

5.
Then, the Gandharvas, having approached Yudhishthira along with the Pandavas, informed him of our ill-advised plan and presented us (Duryodhana and his followers) as bound.

6.
What greater misery could there be than this: I, wretched and bound, fell into the power of my enemies and was presented before Yudhishthira in the presence of women?

7.
I, the evil-minded one, was released by those whom I always insulted and whose constant enemy I was. And by them, life was given to me.

O hero, if I had met death in that great battle, that would have been far better for me than this kind of life.

May my fame on earth become renowned through the slaying of the Gandharva, and may imperishable, meritorious realms be attained in the abode of Mahendra.

O best of men, hear now what I have resolved today: I shall undertake a fast unto death (prāya) here. As for you all, go back to your homes. And let all my brothers proceed to the city today.

For I will not return to the city disgraced by my enemies. (I shall return only) after having destroyed the pride of my enemies and, similarly, having restored the honor of my friends.

Having become one who causes grief to his well-wishers and increases the joy of his enemies, what shall I say to the ruler when I arrive at Hastinapura?

Alas, oh, how this grievous misdeed (duścarita) was committed by me, a foolish person (durbuddhi), on my own, out of delusion (moha), due to which I have now fallen into a state of danger.

Therefore, I will undertake fasting unto death (prāyam), for indeed I shall not be able to live. For who, being fully conscious, could possibly live after being severely disgraced by enemies and suffering great hardship?

Having heard his words, distressed Duḥśāsana, with a throat choked by tears, extremely afflicted by sorrow, and with joined palms, bowed down and spoke these faltering words to his own eldest brother.

Having spoken thus, that great king (Yudhishthira), O King (addressed to the listener), indeed cried out loudly, grasping the feet of his elder, who was worthy of honor (Bhīṣma), O descendant of Bhārata (addressed to the listener).

Why are you two Kuru princes (kauravyau) lamenting like foolish, common men? For grief (śoka) does not depart from anyone who laments.

35.
And since grief (śoka) does not remove misfortune from one who grieves, what power do you two see then in this lamentation (śoka)? Hold fast to your resolve! Do not, by your lamenting, delight your enemies.

Indeed, O King, the Pāṇḍavas have already done what was to be done – your release (mokṣa). It is always proper for those living in the realm to perform what is pleasing to the king. Protected by you, they indeed live free from anxiety.

O King, today I realize your lack of fortitude (laghusattvatām) in this matter. What is surprising about this, O 'hero', is that you were set free by the Pāṇḍavas? O 'tormentor of enemies', you immediately fell into the power of your foes.

Even today, you still enjoy the treasures belonging to the Pāṇḍavas. Observe the Pāṇḍavas, who are established in their intrinsic nature (sattva); they did not undertake a fast unto death (prāya). Arise, O King, may there be good fortune for you; you ought not to feel anxiety.
