दमयन्त्युवाच ।
मां चेदिच्छसि जीवन्तीं मातः सत्यं ब्रवीमि ते ।
नरवीरस्य वै तस्य नलस्यानयने यत ॥१॥
1. damayantyuvāca ,
māṁ cedicchasi jīvantīṁ mātaḥ satyaṁ bravīmi te ,
naravīrasya vai tasya nalasyānayane yata.
1. damayantī uvāca māṃ cet icchasi jīvantīṃ mātaḥ satyaṃ
bravīmi te naravīrasya vai tasya nalasya ānayane yata
1. Damayantī said: "O Mother, if you wish me to remain living, I tell you the truth: strive indeed to bring back that hero among men, Nala."
बृहदश्व उवाच ।
दमयन्त्या तथोक्ता तु सा देवी भृशदुःखिता ।
बाष्पेण पिहिता राजन्नोत्तरं किंचिदब्रवीत् ॥२॥
2. bṛhadaśva uvāca ,
damayantyā tathoktā tu sā devī bhṛśaduḥkhitā ,
bāṣpeṇa pihitā rājannottaraṁ kiṁcidabravīt.
2. bṛhadaśva uvāca damayantyā tathā uktā tu sā devī
bhṛśaduḥkhitā bāṣpeṇa pihitā rājan na kiṃcit uttaram abravīt
2. Bṛhadaśva said: "O King, that queen, thus addressed by Damayantī, was greatly distressed and overwhelmed by tears; she could not say anything in reply."
तदवस्थां तु तां दृष्ट्वा सर्वमन्तःपुरं तदा ।
हाहाभूतमतीवासीद्भृशं च प्ररुरोद ह ॥३॥
3. tadavasthāṁ tu tāṁ dṛṣṭvā sarvamantaḥpuraṁ tadā ,
hāhābhūtamatīvāsīdbhṛśaṁ ca praruroda ha.
3. tadavasthām tu tām dṛṣṭvā sarvam antaḥpuram tadā
hāhābhūtam atīva āsīt bhṛśam ca praruroda ha
3. Seeing her in that state, the entire inner chamber (harem) was then filled with cries of distress and wept profusely.
ततो भीमं महाराज भार्या वचनमब्रवीत् ।
दमयन्ती तव सुता भर्तारमनुशोचति ॥४॥
4. tato bhīmaṁ mahārāja bhāryā vacanamabravīt ,
damayantī tava sutā bhartāramanuśocati.
4. tataḥ bhīmam mahārāja bhāryā vacanam abravīt
damayantī tava sutā bhartāram anuśocati
4. Then, O great King Bhīma, the queen spoke these words: "Your daughter, Damayantī, mourns for her husband."
अपकृष्य च लज्जां मां स्वयमुक्तवती नृप ।
प्रयतन्तु तव प्रेष्याः पुण्यश्लोकस्य दर्शने ॥५॥
5. apakṛṣya ca lajjāṁ māṁ svayamuktavatī nṛpa ,
prayatantu tava preṣyāḥ puṇyaślokasya darśane.
5. apakṛṣya ca lajjām mām svayam uktavatī nṛpa
prayatantu tava preṣyāḥ puṇyaślokasya darśane
5. And setting aside her modesty, she herself said to me, O King: "Let your messengers make efforts for the sighting of the renowned one (puṇyaśloka)."
तया प्रचोदितो राजा ब्राह्मणान्वशवर्तिनः ।
प्रास्थापयद्दिशः सर्वा यतध्वं नलदर्शने ॥६॥
6. tayā pracodito rājā brāhmaṇānvaśavartinaḥ ,
prāsthāpayaddiśaḥ sarvā yatadhvaṁ naladarśane.
6. tayā pracoditaḥ rājā brāhmaṇān vaśavartinaḥ
prāsthāpayat diśaḥ sarvāḥ yatadhvam naladarśane
6. Urged by her, the king dispatched Brahmins, who were under his command, to all directions, instructing them, "Strive to find Nala!"
ततो विदर्भाधिपतेर्नियोगाद्ब्राह्मणर्षभाः ।
दमयन्तीमथो दृष्ट्वा प्रस्थिताः स्मेत्यथाब्रुवन् ॥७॥
7. tato vidarbhādhipaterniyogādbrāhmaṇarṣabhāḥ ,
damayantīmatho dṛṣṭvā prasthitāḥ smetyathābruvan.
7. tataḥ vidarbhādhipateḥ niyogāt brāhmaṇarṣabhāḥ
damayantīm atho dṛṣṭvā prasthitāḥ sma iti atha abruvan
7. Then, by the command of the lord of Vidarbha, the chief Brahmins, having seen Damayanti, then said, "We have departed."
अथ तानब्रवीद्भैमी सर्वराष्ट्रेष्विदं वचः ।
ब्रुवध्वं जनसंसत्सु तत्र तत्र पुनः पुनः ॥८॥
8. atha tānabravīdbhaimī sarvarāṣṭreṣvidaṁ vacaḥ ,
bruvadhvaṁ janasaṁsatsu tatra tatra punaḥ punaḥ.
8. atha tān abravīt bhaimī sarvarāṣṭreṣu idam vacaḥ
bruvadhvam janasaṃsatsu tatra tatra punaḥ punaḥ
8. Then Bhīmī (Damayanti) said this message to them: "Proclaim this repeatedly in assemblies of people in all those various kingdoms."
क्व नु त्वं कितव छित्त्वा वस्त्रार्धं प्रस्थितो मम ।
उत्सृज्य विपिने सुप्तामनुरक्तां प्रियां प्रिय ॥९॥
9. kva nu tvaṁ kitava chittvā vastrārdhaṁ prasthito mama ,
utsṛjya vipine suptāmanuraktāṁ priyāṁ priya.
9. kva nu tvam kitava chittvā vastrārtham prasthitaḥ
mama utsṛjya vipine suptām anuraktām priyām priya
9. "O gambler! O dear one! Where indeed did you go, having cut off half of my garment and abandoned your beloved, devoted wife, who was sleeping in the forest?"
सा वै यथा समादिष्टा तत्रास्ते त्वत्प्रतीक्षिणी ।
दह्यमाना भृशं बाला वस्त्रार्धेनाभिसंवृता ॥१०॥
10. sā vai yathā samādiṣṭā tatrāste tvatpratīkṣiṇī ,
dahyamānā bhṛśaṁ bālā vastrārdhenābhisaṁvṛtā.
10. sā vai yathā samādiṣṭā tatra āste tvatpratīkṣiṇī
dahyamānā bhṛśam bālā vastrārthena abhisaṃvṛtā
10. Indeed, just as instructed, that young woman remains there, awaiting you, intensely suffering, covered only by half a garment.
तस्या रुदन्त्याः सततं तेन शोकेन पार्थिव ।
प्रसादं कुरु वै वीर प्रतिवाक्यं ददस्व च ॥११॥
11. tasyā rudantyāḥ satataṁ tena śokena pārthiva ,
prasādaṁ kuru vai vīra prativākyaṁ dadasva ca.
11. tasyāḥ rudantyāḥ satatam tena śokena pārthiva
prasādam kuru vai vīra prativākyam dadasva ca
11. O King (pārthiva), O hero, please grant your favor to her, who is constantly weeping due to that sorrow, and give her a reply.
एतदन्यच्च वक्तव्यं कृपां कुर्याद्यथा मयि ।
वायुना धूयमानो हि वनं दहति पावकः ॥१२॥
12. etadanyacca vaktavyaṁ kṛpāṁ kuryādyathā mayi ,
vāyunā dhūyamāno hi vanaṁ dahati pāvakaḥ.
12. etat anyat ca vaktavyam kṛpām kuryāt yathā
mayi vāyunā dhūyamānaḥ hi vanam dahati pāvakaḥ
12. This and other things should be said so that he may show kindness to me. Indeed, like fire (pāvaka) fanned by the wind burns a forest, (my grief consumes me).
भर्तव्या रक्षणीया च पत्नी हि पतिना सदा ।
तन्नष्टमुभयं कस्माद्धर्मज्ञस्य सतस्तव ॥१३॥
13. bhartavyā rakṣaṇīyā ca patnī hi patinā sadā ,
tannaṣṭamubhayaṁ kasmāddharmajñasya satastava.
13. bhartavyā rakṣaṇīyā ca patnī hi patinā sadā tat
naṣṭam ubhayam kasmāt dharma-jñasya sataḥ tava
13. Indeed, a wife must always be supported and protected by her husband. Why then have both of these (support and protection) been lost for you, who are always knowledgeable about the natural law (dharma)?
ख्यातः प्राज्ञः कुलीनश्च सानुक्रोशश्च त्वं सदा ।
संवृत्तो निरनुक्रोशः शङ्के मद्भाग्यसंक्षयात् ॥१४॥
14. khyātaḥ prājñaḥ kulīnaśca sānukrośaśca tvaṁ sadā ,
saṁvṛtto niranukrośaḥ śaṅke madbhāgyasaṁkṣayāt.
14. khyātaḥ prājñaḥ kulīnaḥ ca sānukrośaḥ ca tvam sadā
saṃvṛttaḥ niranukrośaḥ śaṅke mat-bhāgya-saṃkṣayāt
14. You are always renowned, wise, of noble birth, and compassionate. But now you have become uncompassionate, I suspect, due to the decline of my good fortune.
स कुरुष्व महेष्वास दयां मयि नरर्षभ ।
आनृशंस्यं परो धर्मस्त्वत्त एव हि मे श्रुतम् ॥१५॥
15. sa kuruṣva maheṣvāsa dayāṁ mayi nararṣabha ,
ānṛśaṁsyaṁ paro dharmastvatta eva hi me śrutam.
15. sa kuruṣva maheṣvāsa dayām mayi nararṣabha
ānṛśaṃsyam paraḥ dharmaḥ tvattaḥ eva hi me śrutam
15. O great archer, O best among men, please show compassion towards me. Non-cruelty (ānṛśaṃsya) is the supreme natural law (dharma), and indeed, I have heard this from you yourself.
एवं ब्रुवाणान्यदि वः प्रतिब्रूयाद्धि कश्चन ।
स नरः सर्वथा ज्ञेयः कश्चासौ क्व च वर्तते ॥१६॥
16. evaṁ bruvāṇānyadi vaḥ pratibrūyāddhi kaścana ,
sa naraḥ sarvathā jñeyaḥ kaścāsau kva ca vartate.
16. evam bruvāṇān yadi vaḥ pratibrūyāt hi kaścana sa
naraḥ sarvathā jñeyaḥ kaḥ ca asau kva ca vartate
16. If anyone among you were to speak against those who are speaking thus, that man (naraḥ) should certainly be identified: who he is and where he dwells.
यच्च वो वचनं श्रुत्वा ब्रूयात्प्रतिवचो नरः ।
तदादाय वचः क्षिप्रं ममावेद्यं द्विजोत्तमाः ॥१७॥
17. yacca vo vacanaṁ śrutvā brūyātprativaco naraḥ ,
tadādāya vacaḥ kṣipraṁ mamāvedyaṁ dvijottamāḥ.
17. yat ca vaḥ vacanam śrutvā brūyāt prativacaḥ naraḥ
tat ādāya vacaḥ kṣipram mama āvedyam dvijottamāḥ
17. And if a man (naraḥ), having heard your statement, should utter a counter-statement, O best among brahmins (dvijottamāḥ), that statement should be quickly taken and reported to me.
यथा च वो न जानीयाच्चरतो भीमशासनात् ।
पुनरागमनं चैव तथा कार्यमतन्द्रितैः ॥१८॥
18. yathā ca vo na jānīyāccarato bhīmaśāsanāt ,
punarāgamanaṁ caiva tathā kāryamatandritaiḥ.
18. yathā ca vaḥ na jānīyāt carataḥ bhīmaśāsanāt
punarāgamanam ca eva tathā kāryam atandritaiḥ
18. And in such a way that they may not recognize you, who are moving about due to this terrible command, your return must also be carried out diligently in the same manner.
यदि वासौ समृद्धः स्याद्यदि वाप्यधनो भवेत् ।
यदि वाप्यर्थकामः स्याज्ज्ञेयमस्य चिकीर्षितम् ॥१९॥
19. yadi vāsau samṛddhaḥ syādyadi vāpyadhano bhavet ,
yadi vāpyarthakāmaḥ syājjñeyamasya cikīrṣitam.
19. yadi vā asau samṛddhaḥ syāt yadi vā api adhanaḥ bhavet
yadi vā api artha-kāmaḥ syāt jñeyam asya cikīrṣitam
19. Whether he is prosperous, or even if he is poor, or if he is desirous of wealth, his intention should be known.
एवमुक्तास्त्वगच्छंस्ते ब्राह्मणाः सर्वतोदिशम् ।
नलं मृगयितुं राजंस्तथा व्यसनिनं तदा ॥२०॥
20. evamuktāstvagacchaṁste brāhmaṇāḥ sarvatodiśam ,
nalaṁ mṛgayituṁ rājaṁstathā vyasaninaṁ tadā.
20. evam uktāḥ tu agacchan te brāhmaṇāḥ sarvatodiśam
nalam mṛgayitum rājan tathā vyasaninam tadā
20. Thus addressed, those Brahmins then went in all directions, O king, to search for Nala, who was distressed.
ते पुराणि सराष्ट्राणि ग्रामान्घोषांस्तथाश्रमान् ।
अन्वेषन्तो नलं राजन्नाधिजग्मुर्द्विजातयः ॥२१॥
21. te purāṇi sarāṣṭrāṇi grāmānghoṣāṁstathāśramān ,
anveṣanto nalaṁ rājannādhijagmurdvijātayaḥ.
21. te purāṇi sarāṣṭrāṇi grāmān ghoṣān tathā āśramān
anveṣantaḥ nalam rājan na adhi-jagmuḥ dvijātayaḥ
21. O king, those twice-born (dvijātayaḥ), searching for Nala, did not find him in the cities with their kingdoms, nor in the villages, pastoral settlements, and hermitages (āśrama).
तच्च वाक्यं तथा सर्वे तत्र तत्र विशां पते ।
श्रावयां चक्रिरे विप्रा दमयन्त्या यथेरितम् ॥२२॥
22. tacca vākyaṁ tathā sarve tatra tatra viśāṁ pate ,
śrāvayāṁ cakrire viprā damayantyā yatheritam.
22. tat ca vākyam tathā sarve tatra tatra viśām pate
śrāvayām cakrire viprāḥ damayantyā yathā īritam
22. And, O ruler of the people (viśāṃ pate), all those Brahmins (viprāḥ) proclaimed that message, exactly as it had been spoken by Damayanti, in various places.
