वैशंपायन उवाच ।
सा तु कन्या बहुविधं ब्रुवन्ती मधुरं वचः ।
अनुनेतुं सहस्रांशुं न शशाक मनस्विनी ॥१॥

1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
sā tu kanyā bahuvidhaṁ bruvantī madhuraṁ vacaḥ ,
anunetuṁ sahasrāṁśuṁ na śaśāka manasvinī.

Vaiśampāyana said: But that spirited maiden, even while speaking many kinds of sweet words, was unable to conciliate the sun (Sahastrāṃśu).
न शशाक यदा बाला प्रत्याख्यातुं तमोनुदम् ।
भीता शापात्ततो राजन्दध्यौ दीर्घमथान्तरम् ॥२॥

2. na śaśāka yadā bālā pratyākhyātuṁ tamonudam ,
bhītā śāpāttato rājandadhyau dīrghamathāntaram.

O King, when the girl was unable to refuse the dispeller of darkness (the sun) and was fearful of a curse, she then reflected deeply for a long time.
अनागसः पितुः शापो ब्राह्मणस्य तथैव च ।
मन्निमित्तः कथं न स्यात्क्रुद्धादस्माद्विभावसोः ॥३॥
मन्निमित्तः कथं न स्यात्क्रुद्धादस्माद्विभावसोः ॥३॥
3. anāgasaḥ pituḥ śāpo brāhmaṇasya tathaiva ca ,
mannimittaḥ kathaṁ na syātkruddhādasmādvibhāvasoḥ.

How could a curse not come upon my innocent father, and likewise upon the brahmin (Dhaumya), caused by me, from this enraged Vivāvasu (the sun god)?
बालेनापि सता मोहाद्भृशं सापह्नवान्यपि ।
नात्यासादयितव्यानि तेजांसि च तपांसि च ॥४॥

4. bālenāpi satā mohādbhṛśaṁ sāpahnavānyapi ,
nātyāsādayitavyāni tejāṁsi ca tapāṁsi ca.

bālena api satā mohāt bhṛśam sa-apahnavāni
api na atyāsādayitavyāni tejāṃsi ca tapāṃsi ca

Even if one is a child, and even if intensely engaged in denial due to delusion, the glories (power) and (tapas) austerities (of great beings) should not be disrespected.
साहमद्य भृशं भीता गृहीता च करे भृशम् ।
कथं त्वकार्यं कुर्यां वै प्रदानं ह्यात्मनः स्वयम् ॥५॥
कथं त्वकार्यं कुर्यां वै प्रदानं ह्यात्मनः स्वयम् ॥५॥
5. sāhamadya bhṛśaṁ bhītā gṛhītā ca kare bhṛśam ,
kathaṁ tvakāryaṁ kuryāṁ vai pradānaṁ hyātmanaḥ svayam.

sā aham adya bhṛśam bhītā gṛhītā ca kare bhṛśam katham
tu akāryam kuryām vai pradānam hi ātmanaḥ svayam

I am now greatly afraid and firmly seized by the hand. How indeed can I commit such an improper act as giving myself away voluntarily?
सैवं शापपरित्रस्ता बहु चिन्तयती तदा ।
मोहेनाभिपरीताङ्गी स्मयमाना पुनः पुनः ॥६॥

6. saivaṁ śāpaparitrastā bahu cintayatī tadā ,
mohenābhiparītāṅgī smayamānā punaḥ punaḥ.

Thus, she, greatly terrified by the curse, pondered much at that time. Her body was overwhelmed by delusion (moha), yet she smiled again and again.
तं देवमब्रवीद्भीता बन्धूनां राजसत्तम ।
व्रीडाविह्वलया वाचा शापत्रस्ता विशां पते ॥७॥

7. taṁ devamabravīdbhītā bandhūnāṁ rājasattama ,
vrīḍāvihvalayā vācā śāpatrastā viśāṁ pate.

O best of kings, O lord of the people, she, terrified by the curse, spoke to that divine being with a voice trembling from shame.
कुन्त्युवाच ।
पिता मे ध्रियते देव माता चान्ये च बान्धवाः ।
न तेषु ध्रियमाणेषु विधिलोपो भवेदयम् ॥८॥
पिता मे ध्रियते देव माता चान्ये च बान्धवाः ।
न तेषु ध्रियमाणेषु विधिलोपो भवेदयम् ॥८॥
8. kuntyuvāca ,
pitā me dhriyate deva mātā cānye ca bāndhavāḥ ,
na teṣu dhriyamāṇeṣu vidhilopo bhavedayam.
pitā me dhriyate deva mātā cānye ca bāndhavāḥ ,
na teṣu dhriyamāṇeṣu vidhilopo bhavedayam.

kuntī uvāca pitā me dhriyate deva mātā ca anye ca
bāndhavāḥ na teṣu dhriyamāṇeṣu vidhilopaḥ bhavet ayam
bāndhavāḥ na teṣu dhriyamāṇeṣu vidhilopaḥ bhavet ayam
8.
Kunti said: 'O divine one, my father, mother, and other kinsmen are still alive. While they are living, this violation of proper procedure should not occur.'
त्वया मे संगमो देव यदि स्याद्विधिवर्जितः ।
मन्निमित्तं कुलस्यास्य लोके कीर्तिर्नशेत्ततः ॥९॥

9. tvayā me saṁgamo deva yadi syādvidhivarjitaḥ ,
mannimittaṁ kulasyāsya loke kīrtirnaśettataḥ.

tvayā me saṅgamaḥ deva yadi syāt vidhivarjitaḥ
mat-nimittaṃ kulasya asya loke kīrtiḥ naśet tataḥ

O god, if my union with you were to occur without proper rites, then because of me, the reputation of this family would be lost in the world.
अथ वा धर्ममेतं त्वं मन्यसे तपतां वर ।
ऋते प्रदानाद्बन्धुभ्यस्तव कामं करोम्यहम् ॥१०॥
ऋते प्रदानाद्बन्धुभ्यस्तव कामं करोम्यहम् ॥१०॥
10. atha vā dharmametaṁ tvaṁ manyase tapatāṁ vara ,
ṛte pradānādbandhubhyastava kāmaṁ karomyaham.

atha vā dharmam etam tvam manyase tapatām vara
ṛte pradānāt bandhubhyaḥ tava kāmam karomi aham

Or, O best among those who practice austerity (tapas), if you consider this to be your intrinsic nature (dharma), then I will fulfill your desire, but without the customary giving by my kinsmen.
आत्मप्रदानं दुर्धर्ष तव कृत्वा सती त्वहम् ।
त्वयि धर्मो यशश्चैव कीर्तिरायुश्च देहिनाम् ॥११॥
त्वयि धर्मो यशश्चैव कीर्तिरायुश्च देहिनाम् ॥११॥
11. ātmapradānaṁ durdharṣa tava kṛtvā satī tvaham ,
tvayi dharmo yaśaścaiva kīrtirāyuśca dehinām.

ātma-pradānam durdharṣa tava kṛtvā satī tu aham
tvayi dharmaḥ yaśaḥ ca eva kīrtiḥ āyuḥ ca dehinām

11.
O unconquerable one, by dedicating myself to you, I, as a virtuous woman, declare that in you will reside natural law (dharma), glory, renown, and the life of all embodied beings (dehinām).
सूर्य उवाच ।
न ते पिता न ते माता गुरवो वा शुचिस्मिते ।
प्रभवन्ति वरारोहे भद्रं ते शृणु मे वचः ॥१२॥
न ते पिता न ते माता गुरवो वा शुचिस्मिते ।
प्रभवन्ति वरारोहे भद्रं ते शृणु मे वचः ॥१२॥
12. sūrya uvāca ,
na te pitā na te mātā guravo vā śucismite ,
prabhavanti varārohe bhadraṁ te śṛṇu me vacaḥ.
na te pitā na te mātā guravo vā śucismite ,
prabhavanti varārohe bhadraṁ te śṛṇu me vacaḥ.

sūryaḥ uvāca na te pitā na te mātā guravaḥ vā
śucismite prabhavanti varārohe bhadram te śṛṇu me vacaḥ
śucismite prabhavanti varārohe bhadram te śṛṇu me vacaḥ
12.
The Sun said: 'O pure-smiling one, neither your father, nor your mother, nor your teachers have the power to stop this. O woman with beautiful form, listen to my words, and may well-being be yours.'
सर्वान्कामयते यस्मात्कनेर्धातोश्च भामिनि ।
तस्मात्कन्येह सुश्रोणि स्वतन्त्रा वरवर्णिनि ॥१३॥
तस्मात्कन्येह सुश्रोणि स्वतन्त्रा वरवर्णिनि ॥१३॥
13. sarvānkāmayate yasmātkanerdhātośca bhāmini ,
tasmātkanyeha suśroṇi svatantrā varavarṇini.

sarvān kāmayate yasmāt kaneḥ dhātoḥ ca bhāmini
tasmāt kanye iha suśroṇi svatantrā varavarṇini

Oh beautiful lady (bhāmini), because [the word 'kanyā' (maiden) is derived] from the root 'kan', implying one who desires (kāmayate) all, therefore, oh fair-hipped maiden (suśroṇi), oh excellent-complexioned one (varavarṇini), you are independent here.
नाधर्मश्चरितः कश्चित्त्वया भवति भामिनि ।
अधर्मं कुत एवाहं चरेयं लोककाम्यया ॥१४॥
अधर्मं कुत एवाहं चरेयं लोककाम्यया ॥१४॥
14. nādharmaścaritaḥ kaścittvayā bhavati bhāmini ,
adharmaṁ kuta evāhaṁ careyaṁ lokakāmyayā.

na adharmaḥ caritaḥ kaścit tvayā bhavati bhāmini
adharmam kutaḥ eva aham careyam lokakāmyayā
adharmam kutaḥ eva aham careyam lokakāmyayā
14.
Oh beautiful lady (bhāmini), no unrighteous act (adharma) has been done by you. How then could I commit an unrighteous act (adharma) out of desire for people (lokakāmyayā)?
अनावृताः स्त्रियः सर्वा नराश्च वरवर्णिनि ।
स्वभाव एष लोकानां विकारोऽन्य इति स्मृतः ॥१५॥

15. anāvṛtāḥ striyaḥ sarvā narāśca varavarṇini ,
svabhāva eṣa lokānāṁ vikāro'nya iti smṛtaḥ.

anāvṛtāḥ striyaḥ sarvāḥ narāḥ ca varavarṇini
svabhāvaḥ eṣa lokānām vikāraḥ anyaḥ iti smṛtaḥ
svabhāvaḥ eṣa lokānām vikāraḥ anyaḥ iti smṛtaḥ
15.
Oh excellently complexioned one (varavarṇini), all women and men are un-covered (i.e., not restricted or hidden). This is the intrinsic nature (svabhāva) of people; any other state is considered a perversion (vikāraḥ).
सा मया सह संगम्य पुनः कन्या भविष्यसि ।
पुत्रश्च ते महाबाहुर्भविष्यति महायशाः ॥१६॥
पुत्रश्च ते महाबाहुर्भविष्यति महायशाः ॥१६॥
16. sā mayā saha saṁgamya punaḥ kanyā bhaviṣyasi ,
putraśca te mahābāhurbhaviṣyati mahāyaśāḥ.

sā mayā saha saṅgamya punaḥ kanyā bhaviṣyasi
putraḥ ca te mahābāhuḥ bhaviṣyati mahāyaśāḥ

16.
Having united with me, you will again become a maiden (kanyā). And your son, the mighty-armed one (mahābāhu), will become greatly famous (mahāyaśāḥ).
कुन्त्युवाच ।
यदि पुत्रो मम भवेत्त्वत्तः सर्वतमोपह ।
कुण्डली कवची शूरो महाबाहुर्महाबलः ॥१७॥
यदि पुत्रो मम भवेत्त्वत्तः सर्वतमोपह ।
कुण्डली कवची शूरो महाबाहुर्महाबलः ॥१७॥
17. kuntyuvāca ,
yadi putro mama bhavettvattaḥ sarvatamopaha ,
kuṇḍalī kavacī śūro mahābāhurmahābalaḥ.
yadi putro mama bhavettvattaḥ sarvatamopaha ,
kuṇḍalī kavacī śūro mahābāhurmahābalaḥ.
17.
kuntī uvāca yadi putraḥ mama bhavet tvattaḥ
sarvatamopaha kuṇḍalī kavacī śūraḥ mahābāhuḥ mahābalaḥ
sarvatamopaha kuṇḍalī kavacī śūraḥ mahābāhuḥ mahābalaḥ
17.
Kunti said: "If a son from you were to be born to me, who removes all darkness, wearing earrings, armored, heroic, mighty-armed, and immensely powerful..."
सूर्य उवाच ।
भविष्यति महाबाहुः कुण्डली दिव्यवर्मभृत् ।
उभयं चामृतमयं तस्य भद्रे भविष्यति ॥१८॥
भविष्यति महाबाहुः कुण्डली दिव्यवर्मभृत् ।
उभयं चामृतमयं तस्य भद्रे भविष्यति ॥१८॥
18. sūrya uvāca ,
bhaviṣyati mahābāhuḥ kuṇḍalī divyavarmabhṛt ,
ubhayaṁ cāmṛtamayaṁ tasya bhadre bhaviṣyati.
bhaviṣyati mahābāhuḥ kuṇḍalī divyavarmabhṛt ,
ubhayaṁ cāmṛtamayaṁ tasya bhadre bhaviṣyati.
18.
sūrya uvāca bhaviṣyati mahābāhuḥ kuṇḍalī divyavarmabhṛt
ubhayam ca amṛtamayam tasya bhadre bhaviṣyati
ubhayam ca amṛtamayam tasya bhadre bhaviṣyati
18.
Sūrya said: "O virtuous lady, he will be mighty-armed, wearing earrings, and bearing divine armor. Both his earrings and armor will be immortal (amṛta-maya)."
कुन्त्युवाच ।
यद्येतदमृतादस्ति कुण्डले वर्म चोत्तमम् ।
मम पुत्रस्य यं वै त्वं मत्त उत्पादयिष्यसि ॥१९॥
यद्येतदमृतादस्ति कुण्डले वर्म चोत्तमम् ।
मम पुत्रस्य यं वै त्वं मत्त उत्पादयिष्यसि ॥१९॥
19. kuntyuvāca ,
yadyetadamṛtādasti kuṇḍale varma cottamam ,
mama putrasya yaṁ vai tvaṁ matta utpādayiṣyasi.
yadyetadamṛtādasti kuṇḍale varma cottamam ,
mama putrasya yaṁ vai tvaṁ matta utpādayiṣyasi.
19.
kuntī uvāca yadi etat amṛtāt asti kuṇḍale varma ca
uttamam mama putrasya yam vai tvam mattaḥ utpādayiṣyasi
uttamam mama putrasya yam vai tvam mattaḥ utpādayiṣyasi

Kunti said: "If these excellent earrings and armor, which are from immortality (amṛta), are for my son whom you will indeed beget through me..."
अस्तु मे संगमो देव यथोक्तं भगवंस्त्वया ।
त्वद्वीर्यरूपसत्त्वौजा धर्मयुक्तो भवेत्स च ॥२०॥
त्वद्वीर्यरूपसत्त्वौजा धर्मयुक्तो भवेत्स च ॥२०॥
20. astu me saṁgamo deva yathoktaṁ bhagavaṁstvayā ,
tvadvīryarūpasattvaujā dharmayukto bhavetsa ca.
tvadvīryarūpasattvaujā dharmayukto bhavetsa ca.
20.
astu me saṃgamaḥ deva yathā uktam bhagavan tvayā
tvadvīryarūpasattvaujā dharmayuktaḥ bhavet saḥ ca
tvadvīryarūpasattvaujā dharmayuktaḥ bhavet saḥ ca
20.
O god, let my union be as you, the venerable one (Bhagavān), have spoken. And may that son possess your virility, form, essence, and vigor, and be endowed with natural law (dharma).
सूर्य उवाच ।
अदित्या कुण्डले राज्ञि दत्ते मे मत्तकाशिनि ।
तेऽस्य दास्यामि वै भीरु वर्म चैवेदमुत्तमम् ॥२१॥
अदित्या कुण्डले राज्ञि दत्ते मे मत्तकाशिनि ।
तेऽस्य दास्यामि वै भीरु वर्म चैवेदमुत्तमम् ॥२१॥
21. sūrya uvāca ,
adityā kuṇḍale rājñi datte me mattakāśini ,
te'sya dāsyāmi vai bhīru varma caivedamuttamam.
adityā kuṇḍale rājñi datte me mattakāśini ,
te'sya dāsyāmi vai bhīru varma caivedamuttamam.
21.
sūryaḥ uvāca adityā kuṇḍale rājñi datte me mattakāśini
te asya dāsyāmi vai bhīru varma ca eva idam uttamam
te asya dāsyāmi vai bhīru varma ca eva idam uttamam
21.
Sūrya said: "O queen, O beautiful one with intoxicated eyes, the two earrings given to me by Aditi - those I will certainly give to him, O timid one, along with this excellent armor."
पृथोवाच ।
परमं भगवन्देव संगमिष्ये त्वया सह ।
यदि पुत्रो भवेदेवं यथा वदसि गोपते ॥२२॥
परमं भगवन्देव संगमिष्ये त्वया सह ।
यदि पुत्रो भवेदेवं यथा वदसि गोपते ॥२२॥
22. pṛthovāca ,
paramaṁ bhagavandeva saṁgamiṣye tvayā saha ,
yadi putro bhavedevaṁ yathā vadasi gopate.
paramaṁ bhagavandeva saṁgamiṣye tvayā saha ,
yadi putro bhavedevaṁ yathā vadasi gopate.
22.
pṛthā uvāca paramam bhagavan deva saṅgamiṣye tvayā
saha yadi putraḥ bhavet evaṃ yathā vadasi gopate
saha yadi putraḥ bhavet evaṃ yathā vadasi gopate
22.
Pṛthā said: "O supreme divine Lord (Bhagavan), I will unite with you if a son is born exactly as you say, O lord of cows (gopate)."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तथेत्युक्त्वा तु तां कुन्तीमाविवेश विहंगमः ।
स्वर्भानुशत्रुर्योगात्मा नाभ्यां पस्पर्श चैव ताम् ॥२३॥
तथेत्युक्त्वा तु तां कुन्तीमाविवेश विहंगमः ।
स्वर्भानुशत्रुर्योगात्मा नाभ्यां पस्पर्श चैव ताम् ॥२३॥
23. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tathetyuktvā tu tāṁ kuntīmāviveśa vihaṁgamaḥ ,
svarbhānuśatruryogātmā nābhyāṁ pasparśa caiva tām.
tathetyuktvā tu tāṁ kuntīmāviveśa vihaṁgamaḥ ,
svarbhānuśatruryogātmā nābhyāṁ pasparśa caiva tām.
23.
vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tathā iti uktvā tu tām kuntīm āviveśa
vihaṅgamaḥ svarbhānuśatruḥ yogātmā nābhyām pasparśa ca eva tām
vihaṅgamaḥ svarbhānuśatruḥ yogātmā nābhyām pasparśa ca eva tām
23.
Vaiśampāyana said: "Having said 'So be it,' the sun god (vihaṅgama), the enemy of Svarbhānu (Rāhu), whose essence is spiritual discipline (yoga), entered Kuntī. He certainly touched her at the navel (nābhyām)."
ततः सा विह्वलेवासीत्कन्या सूर्यस्य तेजसा ।
पपाताथ च सा देवी शयने मूढचेतना ॥२४॥

24. tataḥ sā vihvalevāsītkanyā sūryasya tejasā ,
papātātha ca sā devī śayane mūḍhacetanā.

papāta atha ca sā devī śayane mūḍhacetanā

Then that maiden (kanyā) lived in agitation because of Sūrya's splendor (tejas). And then that divine lady (devī) fell onto her bed, her consciousness bewildered.
सूर्य उवाच ।
साधयिष्यामि सुश्रोणि पुत्रं वै जनयिष्यसि ।
सर्वशस्त्रभृतां श्रेष्ठं कन्या चैव भविष्यसि ॥२५॥
साधयिष्यामि सुश्रोणि पुत्रं वै जनयिष्यसि ।
सर्वशस्त्रभृतां श्रेष्ठं कन्या चैव भविष्यसि ॥२५॥
25. sūrya uvāca ,
sādhayiṣyāmi suśroṇi putraṁ vai janayiṣyasi ,
sarvaśastrabhṛtāṁ śreṣṭhaṁ kanyā caiva bhaviṣyasi.
sādhayiṣyāmi suśroṇi putraṁ vai janayiṣyasi ,

Sūrya said: "O beautiful one, I shall bring this about: you will indeed give birth to a son, who will be the most excellent among all wielders of weapons. And you will certainly remain a maiden."

एवमस्त्विति राजेन्द्र प्रस्थितं भूरिवर्चसम् ॥२६॥

Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Then, that bashful maiden spoke to Sūrya saying, "So be it!" O king (Janamejaya), the greatly radiant one then departed.
इति स्मोक्ता कुन्तिराजात्मजा सा विवस्वन्तं याचमाना सलज्जा ।
तस्मिन्पुण्ये शयनीये पपात मोहाविष्टा भज्यमाना लतेव ॥२७॥

Thus addressed, the bashful daughter of the Kunti king, (still) imploring Vivāsvan (Sūrya), fell onto that auspicious bed, overcome by delusion, like a breaking creeper.
तां तिग्मांशुस्तेजसा मोहयित्वा योगेनाविश्यात्मसंस्थां चकार ।
न चैवैनां दूषयामास भानुः संज्ञां लेभे भूय एवाथ बाला ॥२८॥

That sharp-rayed one (Sūrya), having deluded her with his brilliance and having entered her through his mystical power (yoga), ensured she remained established in her own self (ātman). And the radiant one (Sūrya) certainly did not defile her. Then, the maiden regained consciousness again.
