लोमश उवाच ।
इल्वलस्तान्विदित्वा तु महर्षिसहितान्नृपान् ।
उपस्थितान्सहामात्यो विषयान्तेऽभ्यपूजयत् ॥१॥
1. lomaśa uvāca ,
ilvalastānviditvā tu maharṣisahitānnṛpān ,
upasthitānsahāmātyo viṣayānte'bhyapūjayat.

1. Lomaśa said: Ilvala, indeed, having recognized those kings who were present and accompanied by great sages, honored them with his ministers at the border of his territory.
तेषां ततोऽसुरश्रेष्ठ आतिथ्यमकरोत्तदा ।
स संस्कृतेन कौरव्य भ्रात्रा वातापिना किल ॥२॥
2. teṣāṁ tato'suraśreṣṭha ātithyamakarottadā ,
sa saṁskṛtena kauravya bhrātrā vātāpinā kila.
2. teṣām tataḥ asuraśreṣṭhaḥ ātithyam akarot tadā
saḥ saṃskṛtena kauravya bhrātrā vātāpinā kila
2. Then, O Kaurava, that chief of the asuras (asura), Ilvala, offered them hospitality at that time. It is said that he did so through his brother Vātāpi, who was prepared.
ततो राजर्षयः सर्वे विषण्णा गतचेतसः ।
वातापिं संस्कृतं दृष्ट्वा मेषभूतं महासुरम् ॥३॥
3. tato rājarṣayaḥ sarve viṣaṇṇā gatacetasaḥ ,
vātāpiṁ saṁskṛtaṁ dṛṣṭvā meṣabhūtaṁ mahāsuram.
3. tataḥ rājarṣayaḥ sarve viṣaṇṇāḥ gatacetasaḥ
vātāpiṃ saṃskṛtaṃ dṛṣṭvā meṣabhūtaṃ mahāsuram
3. Thereupon, all the royal sages became dejected and disheartened upon seeing the great demon Vātāpi, who had been transformed into a ram and prepared (for the offering).
अथाब्रवीदगस्त्यस्तान्राजर्षीनृषिसत्तमः ।
विषादो वो न कर्तव्यो अहं भोक्ष्ये महासुरम् ॥४॥
4. athābravīdagastyastānrājarṣīnṛṣisattamaḥ ,
viṣādo vo na kartavyo ahaṁ bhokṣye mahāsuram.
4. atha abravīt agastyaḥ tān rājarṣīn ṛṣisattamaḥ
viṣādaḥ vaḥ na kartavyaḥ aham bhokṣye mahāsuram
4. Then Agastya, the foremost among the sages, said to those royal sages, "You should not feel dejection; I will consume the great demon."
धुर्यासनमथासाद्य निषसाद महामुनिः ।
तं पर्यवेषद्दैत्येन्द्र इल्वलः प्रहसन्निव ॥५॥
5. dhuryāsanamathāsādya niṣasāda mahāmuniḥ ,
taṁ paryaveṣaddaityendra ilvalaḥ prahasanniva.
5. dhuryāsanam atha āsādya niṣasāda mahāmuniḥ tam
paryaveṣat daityendraḥ ilvalaḥ prahasan iva
5. Then the great sage, having occupied the principal seat, sat down. Ilvala, the king of the Daityas (demons), served him as if he were laughing.
अगस्त्य एव कृत्स्नं तु वातापिं बुभुजे ततः ।
भुक्तवत्यसुरोऽऽह्वानमकरोत्तस्य इल्वलः ॥६॥
6. agastya eva kṛtsnaṁ tu vātāpiṁ bubhuje tataḥ ,
bhuktavatyasuro''hvānamakarottasya ilvalaḥ.
6. agastyaḥ eva kṛtsnam tu vātāpiṃ bubhuje tataḥ
bhuktavati asuraḥ āhvānam akarot tasya ilvalaḥ
6. Agastya then indeed consumed the entire Vātāpi. After he had eaten, the demon Ilvala summoned Vātāpi.
ततो वायुः प्रादुरभूदगस्त्यस्य महात्मनः ।
इल्वलश्च विषण्णोऽभूद्दृष्ट्वा जीर्णं महासुरम् ॥७॥
7. tato vāyuḥ prādurabhūdagastyasya mahātmanaḥ ,
ilvalaśca viṣaṇṇo'bhūddṛṣṭvā jīrṇaṁ mahāsuram.
7. tataḥ vāyuḥ prādurabhūt agastyasya mahātmanaḥ |
ilvalaḥ ca viṣaṇṇaḥ abhūt dṛṣṭvā jīrṇam mahāsuram
7. Then, wind manifested from the great-souled (mahātman) Agastya. And Ilvala became dejected upon seeing the great demon (Vātāpi) consumed.
प्राञ्जलिश्च सहामात्यैरिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ।
किमर्थमुपयाताः स्थ ब्रूत किं करवाणि वः ॥८॥
8. prāñjaliśca sahāmātyairidaṁ vacanamabravīt ,
kimarthamupayātāḥ stha brūta kiṁ karavāṇi vaḥ.
8. prāñjaliḥ ca saha-āmātyaiḥ idam vacanam abravīt
| kimartham upayātāḥ stha brūta kim karavāṇi vaḥ
8. And with folded hands, along with his ministers, he spoke this word: 'For what purpose have you come? Tell me, what shall I do for you?'
प्रत्युवाच ततोऽगस्त्यः प्रहसन्निल्वलं तदा ।
ईशं ह्यसुर विद्मस्त्वां वयं सर्वे धनेश्वरम् ॥९॥
9. pratyuvāca tato'gastyaḥ prahasannilvalaṁ tadā ,
īśaṁ hyasura vidmastvāṁ vayaṁ sarve dhaneśvaram.
9. pratyuvāca tataḥ agastyaḥ prahasan ilvalam tadā |
īśam hi asura vidmaḥ tvām vayam sarve dhaneśvaram
9. Then Agastya, smiling, replied to Ilvala at that time: 'Indeed, O demon, all of us know you to be a lord (īśa) and master of wealth (dhaneśvara).'
इमे च नातिधनिनो धनार्थश्च महान्मम ।
यथाशक्त्यविहिंस्यान्यान्संविभागं प्रयच्छ नः ॥१०॥
10. ime ca nātidhanino dhanārthaśca mahānmama ,
yathāśaktyavihiṁsyānyānsaṁvibhāgaṁ prayaccha naḥ.
10. ime ca na atidhaninaḥ dhana-arthaḥ ca mahān mama |
yathāśakti avihimsyān anyān saṃvibhāgam prayaccha naḥ
10. These companions of mine are not very wealthy, and my need for wealth is great. Therefore, give us a share according to your capacity, especially for these others who are inviolable.
ततोऽभिवाद्य तमृषिमिल्वलो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
दित्सितं यदि वेत्सि त्वं ततो दास्यामि ते वसु ॥११॥
11. tato'bhivādya tamṛṣimilvalo vākyamabravīt ,
ditsitaṁ yadi vetsi tvaṁ tato dāsyāmi te vasu.
11. tataḥ abhivādya tam ṛṣim ilvalaḥ vākyam abravīt
ditsitam yadi vetsi tvam tataḥ dāsyāmi te vasu
11. Then, having greeted that sage, Ilvala spoke these words: "If you know what is desired to be given, then I will give you wealth."
अगस्त्य उवाच ।
गवां दश सहस्राणि राज्ञामेकैकशोऽसुर ।
तावदेव सुवर्णस्य दित्सितं ते महासुर ॥१२॥
12. agastya uvāca ,
gavāṁ daśa sahasrāṇi rājñāmekaikaśo'sura ,
tāvadeva suvarṇasya ditsitaṁ te mahāsura.
12. agastyaḥ uvāca gavām daśa sahasrāṇi rājñām ekaikaśaḥ
asura tāvat eva suvarṇasya ditsitam te mahā asura
12. Agastya said, "Ten thousand cows individually from kings, O asura, and that much gold - that is what is desired to be given by you, O great asura."
मह्यं ततो वै द्विगुणं रथश्चैव हिरण्मयः ।
मनोजवौ वाजिनौ च दित्सितं ते महासुर ।
जिज्ञास्यतां रथः सद्यो व्यक्तमेष हिरण्मयः ॥१३॥
13. mahyaṁ tato vai dviguṇaṁ rathaścaiva hiraṇmayaḥ ,
manojavau vājinau ca ditsitaṁ te mahāsura ,
jijñāsyatāṁ rathaḥ sadyo vyaktameṣa hiraṇmayaḥ.
13. mahyam tataḥ vai dviguṇam rathaḥ ca
eva hiraṇmayaḥ manaḥjavau vājinau ca
ditsitam te mahā asura jijñāsyatām
rathaḥ sadyaḥ vyaktam eṣaḥ hiraṇmayaḥ
13. "Then for me, indeed, double that amount, and also a golden chariot, and two horses swift as thought – this is what is desired to be given by you, O great asura. Let the chariot be examined immediately; it is clearly golden."
लोमश उवाच ।
जिज्ञास्यमानः स रथः कौन्तेयासीद्धिरण्मयः ।
ततः प्रव्यथितो दैत्यो ददावभ्यधिकं वसु ॥१४॥
14. lomaśa uvāca ,
jijñāsyamānaḥ sa rathaḥ kaunteyāsīddhiraṇmayaḥ ,
tataḥ pravyathito daityo dadāvabhyadhikaṁ vasu.
14. lomaśaḥ uvāca jijñāsyamānaḥ saḥ rathaḥ kaunteya āsīt
hiraṇmayaḥ tataḥ pravyathitaḥ daityaḥ dadau abhyadhikam vasu
14. Lomasha said, "That chariot, as it was being examined, O son of Kunti, proved to be golden. Then the demon, greatly distressed, gave even more wealth."
विवाजश्च सुवाजश्च तस्मिन्युक्तौ रथे हयौ ।
ऊहतुस्तौ वसून्याशु तान्यगस्त्याश्रमं प्रति ।
सर्वान्राज्ञः सहागस्त्यान्निमेषादिव भारत ॥१५॥
15. vivājaśca suvājaśca tasminyuktau rathe hayau ,
ūhatustau vasūnyāśu tānyagastyāśramaṁ prati ,
sarvānrājñaḥ sahāgastyānnimeṣādiva bhārata.
15. vivājaḥ ca suvājaḥ ca tasmin yuktau
rathe hayau ūhatuḥ tau vasūnī āśu tāni
agastya-āśramam prati sarvān rājñaḥ
saha-agastyān nimeṣāt iva bhārata
15. O Bhārata, Vivāja and Suvāja, the two horses yoked to that chariot, quickly carried those riches towards Agastya's hermitage, as if they were transporting all the kings along with Agastya himself in the blink of an eye.
अगस्त्येनाभ्यनुज्ञाता जग्मू राजर्षयस्तदा ।
कृतवांश्च मुनिः सर्वं लोपामुद्राचिकीर्षितम् ॥१६॥
16. agastyenābhyanujñātā jagmū rājarṣayastadā ,
kṛtavāṁśca muniḥ sarvaṁ lopāmudrācikīrṣitam.
16. agastyena abhyanujñātāḥ jagmuḥ rājarṣayaḥ tadā
kṛtavān ca muniḥ sarvam lopāmudrā-cikīrṣitam
16. Then, having been permitted by Agastya, the royal sages departed. The sage also fulfilled all of Lopāmudrā's wishes.
लोपामुद्रोवाच ।
कृतवानसि तत्सर्वं भगवन्मम काङ्क्षितम् ।
उत्पादय सकृन्मह्यमपत्यं वीर्यवत्तरम् ॥१७॥
17. lopāmudrovāca ,
kṛtavānasi tatsarvaṁ bhagavanmama kāṅkṣitam ,
utpādaya sakṛnmahyamapatyaṁ vīryavattaram.
17. lopāmudrā uvāca kṛtavān asi tat sarvam bhagavan mama
kāṅkṣitam utpāday sakṛt mahyam apatyam vīrya-vattaram
17. Lopāmudrā said: "O Venerable One, you have fulfilled all my desires. Now, produce for me a single, most virile offspring."
अगस्त्य उवाच ।
तुष्टोऽहमस्मि कल्याणि तव वृत्तेन शोभने ।
विचारणामपत्ये तु तव वक्ष्यामि तां शृणु ॥१८॥
18. agastya uvāca ,
tuṣṭo'hamasmi kalyāṇi tava vṛttena śobhane ,
vicāraṇāmapatye tu tava vakṣyāmi tāṁ śṛṇu.
18. agastyaḥ uvāca tuṣṭaḥ aham asmi kalyāṇi tava vṛttena
śobhane vicāraṇām apatye tu tava vakṣyāmi tām śṛṇu
18. Agastya said: "O auspicious and beautiful one, I am pleased by your conduct. Regarding offspring, I will tell you my thoughts; listen to them."
सहस्रं तेऽस्तु पुत्राणां शतं वा दशसंमितम् ।
दश वा शततुल्याः स्युरेको वापि सहस्रवत् ॥१९॥
19. sahasraṁ te'stu putrāṇāṁ śataṁ vā daśasaṁmitam ,
daśa vā śatatulyāḥ syureko vāpi sahasravat.
19. sahásram te astu putrāṇām śatam vā daśasaṃmitam
| daśa vā śatatulyāḥ syuḥ ekaḥ vā api sahásravat
19. May you have a thousand sons. Or, may you have a hundred sons, each equivalent to ten (sons). Or, may you have ten sons, each equal to a hundred. Or even, may you have one son who is like a thousand (sons).
लोपामुद्रोवाच ।
सहस्रसंमितः पुत्र एको मेऽस्तु तपोधन ।
एको हि बहुभिः श्रेयान्विद्वान्साधुरसाधुभिः ॥२०॥
20. lopāmudrovāca ,
sahasrasaṁmitaḥ putra eko me'stu tapodhana ,
eko hi bahubhiḥ śreyānvidvānsādhurasādhubhiḥ.
20. lopāmudrā uvāca sahásrasaṃmitaḥ putraḥ ekaḥ me astu
tapodhana | ekaḥ hi bahúbhiḥ śreyān vidvān sādhuḥ asādhúbhiḥ
20. Lopāmudrā said: 'O ascetic (tapodhana), may I have one son who is equal to a thousand (sons)! Indeed, a single wise and virtuous person is superior to many who are not virtuous.'
लोमश उवाच ।
स तथेति प्रतिज्ञाय तया समभवन्मुनिः ।
समये समशीलिन्या श्रद्धावाञ्श्रद्दधानया ॥२१॥
21. lomaśa uvāca ,
sa tatheti pratijñāya tayā samabhavanmuniḥ ,
samaye samaśīlinyā śraddhāvāñśraddadhānayā.
21. lomaśaḥ uvāca saḥ tathā íti pratijñāya tayā samabhavat
muniḥ | samaye samaśīlinyā śraddhāvān śraddadhānayā
21. Lomaśa said: 'Having promised 'So be it' to her, that sage (muni), a man full of faith (śraddhāvān), united with her at the proper time; she too was of similar character and full of faith (śraddadhānayā).'
तत आधाय गर्भं तमगमद्वनमेव सः ।
तस्मिन्वनगते गर्भो ववृधे सप्त शारदान् ॥२२॥
22. tata ādhāya garbhaṁ tamagamadvanameva saḥ ,
tasminvanagate garbho vavṛdhe sapta śāradān.
22. tataḥ ādhāya garbham tam agamat vanam eva saḥ |
tasmin vana-gate garbhaḥ vavṛdhe sapta śāradān
22. Then, having conceived that embryo (garbha), he went directly to the forest. While he was in the forest, that embryo (garbha) grew for seven years.
सप्तमेऽब्दे गते चापि प्राच्यवत्स महाकविः ।
ज्वलन्निव प्रभावेन दृढस्युर्नाम भारत ।
साङ्गोपनिषदान्वेदाञ्जपन्नेव महायशाः ॥२३॥
23. saptame'bde gate cāpi prācyavatsa mahākaviḥ ,
jvalanniva prabhāvena dṛḍhasyurnāma bhārata ,
sāṅgopaniṣadānvedāñjapanneva mahāyaśāḥ.
23. saptame abde gate ca api prācyavat
mahākaviḥ jvalan iva prabhāvena
dṛḍhasyuḥ nāma bhārata
sāṅgopaniṣadān vedān japan eva mahāyaśāḥ
23. O Bhārata, even after seven years had passed, that great sage, whose name was Dṛḍhasyu, of great renown, was shining with his glorious influence like the rising sun, continuously chanting the Vedas along with their auxiliary sciences and Upanishads.
तस्य पुत्रोऽभवदृषेः स तेजस्वी महानृषिः ।
स बाल एव तेजस्वी पितुस्तस्य निवेशने ।
इध्मानां भारमाजह्रे इध्मवाहस्ततोऽभवत् ॥२४॥
24. tasya putro'bhavadṛṣeḥ sa tejasvī mahānṛṣiḥ ,
sa bāla eva tejasvī pitustasya niveśane ,
idhmānāṁ bhāramājahre idhmavāhastato'bhavat.
24. tasya putraḥ abhavat ṛṣeḥ sa tejasvī
mahān ṛṣiḥ sa bālaḥ eva tejasvī
pituḥ tasya niveśane idhmānām bhāram
ājahre idhmavāhaḥ tataḥ abhavat
24. A son was born to that sage (ṛṣi), and he himself became a brilliant and great sage (ṛṣi). While still a boy, this brilliant one brought loads of firewood to his father's dwelling, and from that, he became known as Idhmavāha (the firewood carrier).
तथायुक्तं च तं दृष्ट्वा मुमुदे स मुनिस्तदा ।
लेभिरे पितरश्चास्य लोकान्राजन्यथेप्सितान् ॥२५॥
25. tathāyuktaṁ ca taṁ dṛṣṭvā mumude sa munistadā ,
lebhire pitaraścāsya lokānrājanyathepsitān.
25. tathā yuktam ca tam dṛṣṭvā mumude sa muniḥ tadā
lebhire pitaraḥ ca asya lokān rājan yathepsitān
25. And seeing him thus devoted to his task, that sage (muni) then rejoiced. Furthermore, his ancestors (pitaras), O King, attained the worlds they desired.
अगस्त्यस्याश्रमः ख्यातः सर्वर्तुकुसुमान्वितः ।
प्राह्रादिरेवं वातापिरगस्त्येन विनाशितः ॥२६॥
26. agastyasyāśramaḥ khyātaḥ sarvartukusumānvitaḥ ,
prāhrādirevaṁ vātāpiragastyena vināśitaḥ.
26. agastyasya āśramaḥ khyātaḥ sarvartukusumānvitaḥ
prāhrādiḥ evam vātāpiḥ agastyena vināśitaḥ
26. Agastya's hermitage (āśrama) was renowned, adorned with flowers in all seasons. It was here that Vātāpi, the descendant of Prahrāda, was thus destroyed by Agastya.
तस्यायमाश्रमो राजन्रमणीयो गुणैर्युतः ।
एषा भागीरथी पुण्या यथेष्टमवगाह्यताम् ॥२७॥
27. tasyāyamāśramo rājanramaṇīyo guṇairyutaḥ ,
eṣā bhāgīrathī puṇyā yatheṣṭamavagāhyatām.
27. tasya ayam āśramaḥ rājan ramaṇīyaḥ guṇaiḥ yutaḥ
eṣā bhāgīrathī puṇyā yathā iṣṭam avagāhyatām
27. O King, this hermitage (āśrama) of his is delightful and endowed with virtues. This sacred Bhagirathi (Ganga) may be bathed in as you desire.
